Abstract This research investigates the intricate involvement of nuclear Transcription Factor Y Subunit Alpha (NFYA) in the advancement of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and its consequential impact on early Growth Response 4 (EGR4) expression. NFYA demonstrates a significant elevation in CRPC tissues and cell lines, displaying robust upregulation in metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa) samples, closely associated with the Gleason score. Immunohistochemistry validates heightened nuclear staining of NFYA in CRPC patients, highlighting its crucial role in the progression of advanced prostate cancer. Silencing NFYA through siRNA in androgen-independent cell lines markedly impedes cell growth and migration, emphasizing NFYA’s pivotal role in promoting CRPC behavior. RNA-seq analysis identifies EGR4 as a downstream target of NFYA, with both genes consistently upregulated in CRPC. Validating this finding, heightened expression of EGR4 is observed in CRPC samples. In vivo studies utilizing a mouse model demonstrate that NFYA silencing substantially inhibits LNCaP-AI/22RV1shNFYA xenograft tumor growth, accompanied by reduced expression of EGR4 and Ki67. This comprehensive study reveals the multifaceted role of NFYA in CRPC progression, elucidates its downstream impact on EGR4, and underscores the therapeutic potential of targeting NFYA to inhibit CRPC growth in vivo. These findings contribute valuable insights into potential therapeutic strategies for managing CRPC.

AIM: To examine the disparities in macular retinal vascular density between individuals with connective tissue disease-related interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD) and healthy controls (HCs) by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to investigate the changes in microvascular density in abnormal eyes. METHODS: For a retrospective case-control study, a total of 16 patients (32 eyes) diagnosed with CTD-ILD were selected as the ILD group. The 16 healthy volunteers with 32 eyes, matched in terms of age and sex with the patients, were recruited as control group. The macular retina's superficial retinal layer (SRL) and deep retinal layer (DRL) were examined and scanned using OCTA in each individual eye. The densities of retinal microvascular (MIR), macrovascular (MAR), and total microvascular (TMI) were calculated and compared. Changes in retinal vascular density in the macular region were analyzed using three different segmentation methods: central annuli segmentation method (C1-C6), hemispheric segmentation method [uperior right (SR), superior left (SL), inferior left (IL), and inferior right (IR)], and Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) methods [superior (S), inferior (I), left (L), and right (R)]. AIM: To study functional brain abnormalities in patients with hypertensive retinopathy (HR) and to discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms of HR by fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFFs) method. METHODS: Twenty HR patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were respectively recruited. The age, gender, and educational background characteristics of the two groups were similar. After functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning, the subjects' spontaneous brain activity was evaluated with the fALFF method. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to classify the data. Further, we used Pearson's correlation analysis to explore the relationship between fALFF values in specific brain regions and clinical behaviors in patients with HR. RESULTS: The brain areas of the HR group with lower fALFF values than HCs were the right orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus (RO-MFG) and right lingual gyrus. In contrast, the values of fALFFs in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), left superior temporal pole (STP), left middle frontal gyrus (MFG), left superior marginal gyrus (SMG), left superior parietal lobule (SPL), and right supplementary motor area (SMA) were higher in the HR group. Aluminum (Al) and its alloys have been widely used in daily life, but the absence of antibacterial properties makes them potential vectors for bacterial transmission. In this study, an Ag-doped TiO2 coating was successfully prepared on the porous surface of etched Al foil using the sol-gel method. The results indicated that the porous layer allowed the gel to permeate through the holes, thereby forming an interface carrying these antibacterial agents with a thickness of about 10 μm. The Ag dopant promoted the transformation of titania from rutile to anatase during the calcination process, with the rutile being absent when the atomic ratio of Ag to Ti reached 0.10. Meanwhile, the doped Ag+ was thermally decomposed into metallic Ag0. As a result, doping Ag enhanced the photocatalytic efficacy of TiO2 coating. Moreover, the antibacterial rate of this coating against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under dark conditions could reach more than 99%, and the corrosion resistance of the Al foil was also slightly improved by it.

Abstract Objective Accurate prediction of survival prognosis is helpful to guide clinical decision-making. The aim of this study was to develop a model using machine learning techniques to predict the occurrence of composite thromboembolic events (CTEs) in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation(AF). These events encompass newly diagnosed cerebral ischemia events, cardiovascular events, pulmonary embolism, and lower extremity arterial embolism. Methods This retrospective study included 6,079 elderly hospitalized patients (≥ 75 years old) with AF admitted to the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in China from January 2010 to June 2022. Random forest imputation was used for handling missing data. In the descriptive statistics section, patients were divided into two groups based on the occurrence of CTEs, and differences between the two groups were analyzed using chi-square tests for categorical variables and rank-sum tests for continuous variables. In the machine learning section, the patients were randomly divided into a training dataset (n = 4,225) and a validation dataset (n = 1,824) in a 7:3 ratio. Four machine learning models (logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, XGBoost) were trained on the training dataset and validated on the validation dataset. Results The incidence of composite thromboembolic events was 19.53%. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method, using 5-fold cross-validation, was applied to the training dataset and identified a total of 18 features that exhibited a significant association with the occurrence of CTEs. The random forest model outperformed other models in terms of area under the curve (ACC: 0.9144, SEN: 0.7725, SPE: 0.9489, AUC: 0.927, 95% CI: 0.9105–0.9443). The random forest model also showed good clinical validity based on the clinical decision curve. The Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) showed that the top five features associated with the model were history of ischemic stroke, high triglyceride (TG), high total cholesterol (TC), high plasma D-dimer, age. Conclusions This study proposes an accurate model to stratify patients with a high risk of CTEs. The random forest model has good performance. History of ischemic stroke, age, high TG, high TC and high plasma D-Dimer may be correlated with CTEs.

Abstract Acute pancreatitis, a common exocrine inflammatory disease affecting the pancreas, is characterized by intense abdominal pain and multiple organ dysfunction. However, the alterations in retinal blood vessels among individuals with acute pancreatitis remain poorly understood. This study employed optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to examine the superficial and deep retinal blood vessels in patients with pancreatitis. Sixteen patients diagnosed with pancreatitis (32 eyes) and 16 healthy controls (32 eyes) were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University for participation in the study. Various ophthalmic parameters, such as visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and OCTA image for retina consisting of the superficial retinal layer (SRL) and the deep retinal layer (DRL), were recorded for each eye. The study observed the superficial and deep retinal microvascular ring (MIR), macrovascular ring (MAR), and total microvessels (TMI) were observed. Changes in retinal vascular density in the macula through annular partitioning (C1–C6), hemispheric quadrant partitioning (SR, SL, IL, and IR), and early diabetic retinopathy treatment studies (ETDRS) partitioning methods (R, S, L, and I). Correlation analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between retinal capillary density and clinical indicators. Our study revealed that in the superficial retinal layer, the vascular density of TMI, MIR, MAR, SR, IR, S, C2, C3 regions were significantly decreased in patients group compared with the normal group. For the deep retinal layer, the vascular density of MIR, SR, S, C1, C2 regions also reduced in patient group. The ROC analysis demonstrated that OCTA possesses significant diagnostic performance for pancreatitis. In conclusion, patients with pancreatitis may have retinal microvascular dysfunction, and OCTA can be a valuable tool for detecting alterations in ocular microcirculation in pancreatitis patients in clinical practice.

Abstract The proficiency of phyllosphere microbiomes in efficiently utilizing plant-provided nutrients is pivotal for their successful colonization of plants. The methylotrophic capabilities of Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum play a crucial role in this process. However, the precise mechanisms facilitating efficient colonization remain elusive. In the present study, we investigate the significance of methanol assimilation in shaping the success of mutualistic relationships between methylotrophs and plants. A set of strains originating from Methylorubrum extorquens AM1 are subjected to evolutionary pressures to thrive under low methanol conditions. A mutation in the phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase gene is identified, which converts it into a metabolic valve. This valve redirects limited C1-carbon resources towards the synthesis of biomass by up-regulating a non-essential phosphoketolase pathway. These newly acquired bacterial traits demonstrate superior colonization capabilities, even at low abundance, leading to increased growth of inoculated plants. This function is prevalent in Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum strains. In summary, our findings offer insights that could guide the selection of Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum strains for advantageous agricultural applications.

Abstract Biodegradable porous Mg scaffolds are a promising approach to bone repair. In this work, 3D-spherical porous Mg–1.5Zn–0.2Ca (wt.%) scaffolds were prepared by vacuum infiltration casting technology, and MgF2 and fluorapatite coatings were designed to control the degradation behavior of Mg-based scaffolds. The results showed that the pores in Mg-based scaffolds were composed of the main spherical pores (450–600 μm) and interconnected pores (150–200 μm), and the porosity was up to 74.97%. Mg-based porous scaffolds exhibited sufficient mechanical properties with a compressive yield strength of about 4.04 MPa and elastic modulus of appropriately 0.23 GPa. Besides, both MgF2 coating and fluorapatite coating could effectively improve the corrosion resistance of porous Mg-based scaffolds. In conclusion, this research would provide data support and theoretical guidance for the application of biodegradable porous Mg-based scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Myocardial infarction is defined as a sudden decrease or interruption in blood flow to the coronary arteries, causing ischemic necrosis of the corresponding cardiomyocytes. It is unclear whether systemic macrovascular alterations are associated with retinal microvascular changes. This study utilized optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to compare variations in conjunctival vascular density and fundus retinal vessel density between patients with myocardial infarction (MI) and healthy controls. This study recruited 16 patients (32 eyes) with MI and 16 healthy controls (32 eyes). The superficial retinal layer (SRL), deep retinal layer (DRL) and conjunctival capillary plexus in each eye were evaluated by OCTA. Parameters measured included the density of the temporal conjunctival capillary, retinal microvascular (MIR) and macrovascular (MAR) alterations and total MIR (TMI). The microvascular density of each retinal region was evaluated by the hemisphere segmentation (SR, SL, IL, and IR), annular partition (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6), and modified early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study (R, S, L, and I) methods. To study the influence of chaotic systems on wheat image encryption, a method to determine the optimal chaotic system encryption based on a wheat image is proposed. Ten different chaotic system schemes were combined to encrypt the wheat images using 13 common chaotic maps. The best chaotic system scheme was obtained by considering the anti-attack capability of these encryption schemes, which analyzed eight commonly used image encryption performance evaluation indexes. The experimental results show that the new four-dimensional chaotic system has the best encryption effect and is suitable for wheat image encryption. The proposed scheme for wheat image encryption based on chaotic systems provides a reference for other crop image encryption methods.

When single space-based radar tracks and detects air targets, problems such as missing pitch angle information and nonlinear measurement lead to large target height estimation errors. Multi-space-based radar networking can solve this problem. Moreover, considering the system’s requirements for low computational complexity, low communication overhead, high accuracy, and high reliability, a consistency-based method for height estimation and location of air targets in a distributed space-based radar network is proposed. First, an air target motion model and a space-based radar measurement model are presented. Second, based on probabilistic graphical model theory, a factor graph for multi-frame measurement of target tracking and positioning in a space-based radar network is established. The coupling relationship between several local target motion states is established based on consistency fusion. Third, combining particle filtering and belief propagation establishes the message representation and iterative calculation rules of nonparametric belief propagation on the fusion tracking for factor graph of space-based radar networking. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is tested through simulation. The simulation results show that compared with the distributed consensus extended Kalman filter, the proposed algorithm improves the target height estimation accuracy by 35.3%, effectively improving the target localization performance of the space-based radar.

Abstract Human norovirus is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, and its detection in foods remains a challenge due to the difficulty of eluting and enriching trace amounts of viral particles. In this study, we developed porcine gastric mucin–labeled magnetic capture probes and optimized the conditions for their binding with norovirus, elution of viral particles, and RNA isolation based on the previous research. We evaluated the magnetic capture‐based pretreatment method in artificially contaminated strawberry samples and compared it with the conventional polyethylene glycol precipitation–based method using reverse transcriptional‐quantitative PCR (RT‐qPCR). The results revealed that Tris·HCl (pH 9.5) was the optimal buffer for the binding of magnetic probes with viral particles, and RNA recovery rate obtained by heating‐based release was significantly higher than that obtained by a commercial kit, with only active virus being captured. This buffer was similar to the RT‐qPCR buffer, which facilitated the sensitivity of RT‐qPCR. Furthermore, the buffer was an effective solution for eluting viral particles from foods in previous research and was optimized to ensure maximum elution and no inhibitory effect on viral capture. We explored multiple factors or steps to ensure that the sensitivity of our method was three orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional method. Our findings suggest that magnetic capture‐based detection has great potential for the sensitive detection of human norovirus.

Objective: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency has been known to be associated with the risk and mortality of several cancers. However, the role of 25(OH)D in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between 25(OH)D and clinicopathologic features of PTC. Methods: Patients who underwent thyroidectomy were retrospectively reviewed. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured within a week prior to surgery. The patients were categorized into four quartiles according to season-specific 25(OH)D levels. The association between 25(OH)D levels and clinicopathologic features of PTC was analyzed. Results: A total of 2932 patients were enrolled in the study. The 25(OH)D levels were significantly higher in patients with lymph node metastasis (LNM; P < 0.001), lateral LNM (P < 0.001), and multifocal tumors (P < 0.001). Compared to the first quartile (Q1) of 25(OH)D level, the third quartile (Q3) and the fourth quartile (Q4) showed an unadjusted OR of 1.36 (95% CI: 1.09–1.69; P = 0.006) and 1.76 (95% CI: 1.42–2.19; P < 0.001) for LNM (P for trend < 0.001), respectively. AIM: To study retinal microvascular and microstructural alterations in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in severely obese population using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Twelve MGD patients with severely obese population (PAT group; 24 eyes) and 12 healthy controls (HC group; 24 eyes) were recruited. OCTA images were segmented into five [superior (S), nasal (N), inferior (I), temporal (T), and central foveal (C)] or nine [inner superior (IS), outer superior (OS), inner nasal (IN), outer nasal (ON), inner inferior (II), outer inferior (OI), inner temporal (IT), outer temporal (OT), and C] subregions. The superficial vessel density (SVD), retinal thickness (RT), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters, and retinal volume were measured. RESULTS: Visual acuity was significantly different between two groups (0.8±0.17 in PAT group vs 0.2±0.06 in HC group). SVD was significantly lower in PATs in N, T, OS, IN, OT, and ON. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for T was 0.961 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.908 to 1.000], for OS was 0.962 (95%CI: 0.915 to 1.000). RT was significantly lower in PATs in IS, OS, OI, OT, ON, IT, IN, and II. AUC for OT was 0.935 (95%CI: 0.870 to 0.999), for IS was 0.915 (95% CI: 0.838 to 0.992). Angiography results showed significantly lower area and perimeter of FAZ, SVD of the inner retina and both retinal volume and the average volume thickness in the PAT group. CONCLUSION: Vision may be affected in patients with MGD due to changes in retinal microvessels and microstructures. These changes detected by OCTA may be a potential marker for diagnosing MGD in severe obesity.

As an essential component of the global economic crop, cotton is highly susceptible to the impact of diseases on its yield and quality. In recent years, artificial intelligence technology has been widely used in cotton crop disease recognition, but in complex backgrounds, existing technologies have certain limitations in accuracy and efficiency. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes an innovative cotton disease recognition method called CANnet, and we independently collected and constructed an image dataset containing multiple cotton diseases. Firstly, we introduced the innovatively designed Reception Field Space Channel (RFSC) module to replace traditional convolution kernels. This module combines dynamic receptive field features with traditional convolutional features to effectively utilize spatial channel attention, helping CANnet capture local and global features of images more comprehensively, thereby enhancing the expressive power of features. At the same time, the module also solves the problem of parameter sharing. To further optimize feature extraction and reduce the impact of spatial channel attention redundancy in the RFSC module, we connected a self-designed Precise Coordinate Attention (PCA) module after the RFSC module to achieve redundancy reduction. In the design of the classifier, CANnet abandoned the commonly used MLP in traditional models and instead adopted improved Kolmogorov Arnold Networks-s (KANs) for classification operations. KANs technology helps CANnet to more finely utilize extracted features for classification tasks through learnable activation functions. This is the first application of the KAN concept in crop disease recognition and has achieved excellent results. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of CANnet, we conducted extensive experiments on our cotton disease dataset and a publicly available cotton disease dataset. Numerous experimental results have shown that CANnet outperforms other advanced methods in the accuracy of cotton disease identification. Specifically, on the self-built dataset, the accuracy reached 96.3%; On the public dataset, the accuracy reached 98.6%. These results fully demonstrate the excellent performance of CANnet in cotton disease identification tasks.

Background: Previous studies have found that inhibitory priming with continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) can enhance the effect of subsequent excitatory conditioning stimuli with intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) in the upper limbs. However, whether this combined stimulation approach elicits a comparable compensatory response in the lower extremities remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate how cTBS preconditioning modulated the effect of iTBS on motor cortex excitability related to the lower limb in healthy individuals. Methods: Using a randomised cross-over design, a total of 25 healthy participants (19 females, mean age = 24.80 yr) were recruited to undergo three different TBS protocols (cTBS + iTBS, sham cTBS + iTBS, sham cTBS + sham iTBS) in a random order. Each TBS intervention was administered with one-week intervals. cTBS and iTBS were administered at an intensity of 80% active motor threshold (AMT) delivering a total of 600 pulses. Before intervention (T0), immediately following intervention (T1), and 20 min after intervention (T2), the corticomotor excitability was measured for the tibialis anterior muscle of participants’ non-dominant leg using a Magneuro100 stimulator and matched double-cone coil. The average amplitude of the motor-evoked potential (MEP) induced by applying 20 consecutive monopulse stimuli at an intensity of 130% resting motor threshold (RMT) was collected and analysed. Results: Compare with T0 time, the MEP amplitude (raw and normalised) at T1 and T2 showed a statistically significant increase following the cTBS + iTBS protocol (p < 0.01), but no significant differences were observed in amplitude changes following other protocols (sham cTBS + iTBS and sham cTBS + sham iTBS) (p > 0.05). Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was found among the three protocols at any given time point (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Preconditioning the lower extremity motor cortex with cTBS prior to iTBS intervention can promptly enhance its excitability in healthy participants. Abstract Background Cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is common in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC); however, the efficiency to distinguish CLNM before surgery is limited. T cell exhaustion, characterized by the overexpression of immune checkpoints, plays a critical role in the immune evasion of tumors. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between serum levels of soluble immune checkpoints (sICs) and CLNM in DTC patients. Methods Levels of sICs in serum of 71 DTC patients and 56 healthy volunteers were analyzed by ELISA. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cervical lymph nodes of DTC patients were isolated and their expression of sICs were analyzed. Lymphocytes in cervical lymph nodes were analyzed for immune checkpoints expression and transcription of exhaustion‐associated factors. 30 out of 71 DTC patients were followed up from 3 to 9 months after the operation, and postoperative sTIM‐3 were analyzed. Results Four sICs, including LAG‐3, PD‐1, PD‐L1, and TIM‐3, were increased in DTC patients. All four sICs exhibited higher sensitivity at discriminating CLNM than cervical ultrasound. In the patient‐matched comparison, higher sTIM‐3 levels were observed in tumor‐involved lymph nodes (TILNs) than in normal lymph nodes (nLNs). T lymphocytes in TILNs had higher TIM‐3 surface expression and increased secretion of sTIM‐3 than those in patient‐matched nLNs. Finally, postoperative serum sTIM‐3 levels were decreased in DTC patients with CLNM compared to their preoperative levels. Conclusion Serum levels of sICs, especially sTIM‐3, could help to predict CLNM and provide evidence for surgical decision‐making in DTC.

The landscape of ophthalmology has observed monumental shifts with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This article is devoted to elaborating on the nuanced application of AI in the diagnostic realm of anterior segment eye diseases, an area ripe with potential yet complex in its imaging characteristics. Historically, AI's entrenchment in ophthalmology was predominantly rooted in the posterior segment. However, the evolution of machine learning paradigms, particularly with the advent of deep learning methodologies, has reframed the focus. When combined with the exponential surge in available electronic image data pertaining to the anterior segment, AI's role in diagnosing corneal, conjunctival, lens, and eyelid pathologies has been solidified and has emerged from the realm of theoretical to practical. In light of this transformative potential, collaborations between the Ophthalmic Imaging and Intelligent Medicine Subcommittee of the China Medical Education Association and the Ophthalmology Committee of the International Translational Medicine Association have been instrumental. These eminent bodies mobilized a consortium of experts to dissect and assimilate advancements from both national and international quarters. Their mandate was not limited to AI's application in anterior segment pathologies like the cornea, conjunctiva, lens, and eyelids, but also ventured into deciphering the existing impediments and envisioning future trajectories. After iterative deliberations, the consensus synthesized herein serves as a touchstone, assisting ophthalmologists in optimally integrating AI into their diagnostic decisions and bolstering clinical research. Through this guideline, we aspire to offer a comprehensive framework, ensuring that clinical decisions are not merely informed but transformed by AI. By building upon existing literature yet maintaining the highest standards of originality, this document stands as a testament to both innovation and academic integrity, in line with the ethos of renowned journals such as Ophthalmology.

With the upsurge of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the medical field, its application in ophthalmology has become a cutting-edge research field. Notably, machine learning techniques have shown remarkable achievements in diagnosing, intervening, and predicting ophthalmic diseases. To meet the requirements of clinical research and fit the actual progress of clinical diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic AI, the Ophthalmic Imaging and Intelligent Medicine Branch and the Intelligent Medicine Committee of Chinese Medicine Education Association organized experts to integrate recent evaluation reports of clinical AI research at home and abroad and formed a guideline on clinical research evaluation of AI in ophthalmology after several rounds of discussion and modification. The main content includes the background and method of developing this guideline, an introduction to international guidelines on the clinical research evaluation of AI, and the evaluation methods of clinical ophthalmic AI models. This guideline introduces general evaluation methods of clinical ophthalmic AI research, evaluation methods of clinical ophthalmic AI models, and commonly-used indices and formulae for clinical ophthalmic AI model evaluation in detail, and amply elaborates the evaluation methods of clinical ophthalmic AI trials. This guideline aims to provide guidance and norms for clinical researchers of ophthalmic AI, promote the development of regularization and standardization, and further improve the overall level of clinical ophthalmic AI research evaluations.

This paper aims to delve deeply into the practical guidelines for the application of artificial intelligence(AI)in the diagnosis of anterior ocular diseases in ophthalmology. Given the complexities and variability inherent in the images associated with the research of anterior segment diseases, AI has traditionally found its principal application in the sphere of posterior segment diseases within ophthalmology. However, with the evolution and advancement of AI technologies, notably machine learning and deep learning, alongside an exponential surge in anterior segment electronic image data, the implementation of AI in the domain of corneal, conjunctival, lens, and eyelid disease is not only feasible but has become a reality. The Ophthalmic Imaging and Intelligent Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Education Association, in tandem with the Ophthalmology Professional Committee of the International Translational Medicine Association, have orchestrated a consortium of experts. These specialists have synthesized the most recent progressions, both nationally and internationally, in the application of AI in the diagnosis of anterior ocular diseases. This includes its use in corneal, conjunctival, lens, and eyelid diseases, and provides an analysis of the current challenges faced as well as the future directions of development. This guideline has been formulated through several iterations of thoughtful discussion and revisions. Its purpose is to empower clinical ophthalmologists with a reliable framework to facilitate the enhanced application of AI in diagnostic decision-making and clinical research for anterior ocular diseases.

This paper proposes a new dual-sided linear permanent magnet vernier motor (LPMVM). The advantages of high thrust density, low thrust ripple, positive force elimination and structural stability are introduced in detail. The double-sided structure and toroidal winding proved the novelty of the machine tool, which is suitable for high definition digital control machine tools. Firstly, the basic structure and working principle of the engine are introduced. Through theoretical analysis, the expressions of electromagnetic thrust and detent force are derived. Thirdly, basic characteristics of permanent magnetic magnet flux coupling, backless electromotive force, detent force and electromagnetic drive are analyzed by using a a simplified three-phase model with symmetric boundary in 3-D finite element analysis. Finally, the thrust density and the detent force of the designed motor are calculated and analyzed. The results show that the designed motor is superior to the linear permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Fundus autofluorescence(FAF)imaging is based on the fluorescence excited by the endogenous fluorophores in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, mainly referring to lipofuscin(LF)and melanin. The non-invasive examination method can imply the function of retinal pigment epithelium by observing the spatial distribution of LF or melanin. This technique has unique advantages in the diagnosis and differentiation of age-related macular degeneration(ARMD). This guideline is to standardize and interpret the application of FAF in different stages and classifications of ARMD.

When agricultural experts explore the use of artificial intelligence technology to identify and detect crop diseases, they mainly focus on the research of a stable environment, but ignore the problem of noise in the process of image acquisition in real situations. To solve this problem, we propose an innovative solution called the Critical Information Mining Network (CIMNet). Compared with traditional models, CIMNet has higher recognition accuracy and wider application scenarios. The network has a good effect on crop disease recognition under noisy environments, and can effectively deal with the interference of noise to the recognition effect in actual farmland scenes. Consider that the shape of the leaves can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.First, we introduce the Non-Local Attention Module (Non-Local), which uses a unique self-attention mechanism to fully capture the context information of the image. The module overcomes the limitation of traditional convolutional neural networks that only rely on local features and ignore global features. Global features are particularly important when the image is disturbed by noise. Non-Local improves a more comprehensive visual understanding of crop disease recognition. Secondly, we have innovatively designed a Multi-scale Critical Information Fusion Module (MSCM). The module uses the Key Information Extraction Module (KIB) to dig into the shallow key features in the network deeply. The shallow key features strengthen the feature perception of the model to the noise image through texture and contour information, and then the shallow key features and deep features are fused to enrich the original deep feature information of the network. Finally, we conducted experiments on two public datasets, and the results showed that the accuracy of our model in crop disease identification under a noisy environment was significantly improved. At the same time, our model also showed excellent performance under stable conditions. The results of this study provide favorable support for the improvement of crop production efficiency.

In this work, the short-term creep behaviors of high Nb containing TiAl alloys with different microstructure characteristics at 800 °C under a wide range of stresses of 150–350 MPa were investigated in detail. In order to tailor microstructure of high Nb containing TiAl alloys, composition design strategies were applied, including the change of Al content and the introduction of non-metallic element C and rare-earth oxide Y2O3. Microstructure analysis shows that increasing Al content from 43 at.% to 46 at.% will not only change the phase constitution by changing the solidification behavior, but also affect the existence form of element C, that is, in the form of dissolved carbon atoms in low-Al alloy and Ti2AlC precipitate in high-Al alloy. Creep results confirm that both increasing Al content and introducing C and Y2O3 can effectively reduce the steady-state creep rate and enhance the creep resistance, but the latter has a more significant effect. In addition, the creep behavior of high Nb containing TiAl alloys strongly depends on the stress level, and corresponding creep deformation mechanism changes from grain boundary/lamellar interface sliding under low stress to dislocation motion under high stress. Meanwhile, the correlation between the critical stress value on creep mechanism transition and the alloy composition/microstructure was clarified.

Background: Although gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) related ocular metastasis (OM) is rare, its occurrence indicates a more severe disease. We aimed to utilize machine learning (ML) to analyze the risk factors of GA-related OM and predict its risks. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of 3532 GA patients were collected and randomly classified into training and validation sets in a ratio of 7:3. Those with or without OM were classified into OM and non-OM (NOM) groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were conducted. We integrated the variables identified through feature importance ranking and further refined the selection process using forward sequential feature selection based on random forest (RF) algorithm before incorporating them into the ML model. We applied six ML algorithms to construct the predictive GA model. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve indicated the model's predictive ability. Also, we established a network risk calculator based on the best performance model. We used Shapley additive interpretation (SHAP) to identify risk factors and to confirm the interpretability of the black box model. We have de-identified all patient details. Results: The ML model, consisting of 13 variables, achieved an optimal predictive performance using the gradient boosting machine (GBM) model, with an impressive area under the curve (AUC) of 0.997 in the test set. Utilizing the SHAP method, we identified crucial factors for OM in GA patients, including LDL, CA724, CEA, AFP, CA125, Hb, CA153, and Ca 2+ . Additionally, we validated the model's reliability through an analysis of two patient cases and developed a functional online web prediction calculator based on the GBM model. Conclusion: We used the ML method to establish a risk prediction model for GA-related OM and showed that GBM performed best among the six ML models. The model may identify patients with GA-related OM to provide early and timely treatment.

Abstract As the most common modification of RNA, N6-methyladenosin (m6A) has been confirmed to be involved in the occurrence and development of various cancers. However, the relationship between m6A and castration resistance prostate cancer (CRPC), has not been fully studied. By m6A-sequencing of patient cancer tissues, we identified that the overall level of m6A in CRPC was up-regulated than castration sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC). Based on the analysis of m6A-sequencing data, we found m6A modification level of HRas proto-oncogene, GTPase (HRAS) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 2 (MEK2 or MAP2K2) were enhanced in CRPC. Specifically, tissue microarray analysis and molecular biology experiments confirmed that METTL3, an m6A “writer” up-regulated after castration, activated the ERK pathway to contribute to malignant phenotype including ADT resistance, cell proliferation and invasion. We revealed that METTL3-mediated ERK phosphorylation by stabilizing the transcription of HRAS and positively regulating the translation of MEK2. In the Enzalutamide-resistant (Enz-R) C4-2 and LNCap cell line (C4-2R, LNCapR) established in the current study, the ERK pathway was confirmed to be regulated by METTL3. We also found that applying antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to target the METTL3/ERK axis can restore Enzalutamide resistance in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, METTL3 activated the ERK pathway and induced the resistance to Enzalutamide by regulating the m6A level of critical gene transcription in the ERK pathway.

Staplers have been widely used in the clinical treatment of gastrointestinal reconstruction. However, the current titanium (Ti) staple will remain in the human body permanently, resulting in some adverse effects. In this study, we developed a type of biodegradable staple for colonic anastomosis using 0.3 mm diameter magnesium (Mg) alloy wires. The wire surface was modified by micro-arc oxidation treatment (MAO) and then coated with poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) to achieve a moderate degradation rate matching the tissue healing process. The results of tensile tests on isolated porcine colon tissue anastomosed by Mg and Ti staples showed that the anastomotic property of Mg staples was almost equal to that of Ti staples. The in vitro degradation tests indicated the dual-layer coating effectively enhanced the corrosion resistance and maintained the tensile force of the coated staple stable after 14-day immersion in the simulated colonic fluid (SCF). Furthermore, 24 beagle dogs were employed to conduct a comparison experiment using Mg-based and clinical Ti staples for 90-day implantation by ent-to-side anastomosis of the colon. The integrated structure of Mg-based staples was observed after 7 days and completely degraded after 90 days. All animals did not have anastomotic leakage and stenosis, and 12 dogs with Mg-based staples fully recovered after 90 days without differences in visceral ion levels and other side effects. The favorable performance makes this Mg-based anastomotic staple an ideal candidate for colon reconstruction.

With the development of high technology, people spend more and more time on screens. Most screens contain a lot of blue light. As one of the important components of visible light, blue light has high energy. It may lead to many ocular diseases, such as myopia, cataract, dry eye, glaucoma and keratitis when eyes exposure to blue light for a long time. At present, the harm of blue light and how to prevent blue light have become a hot topic. Its mechanism mainly includes increasing the photosensitivity of lipofuscin, destroying the mitochondria, lysosome, lens and tear film. According to the mechanism of blue light damage, physical protective measures can be adopted. And the antioxidant, free radical scavengers, anti-inflammatory drugs and gene therapy can be used to protect eye tissue. This paper mainly summarizes the harmful mechanism of blue light to eye and the corresponding prevention and treatment measures.

Abstract Background To evaluate the clinical efficacy of combined minimal lower eyelid epicanthoplasty and thermal contraction for epiblepharon repair in Chinese children. Methods Between January 2017 and August 2020, a single surgeon corrected epiblepharon in Chinese children using minimal lower eyelid epicanthoplasty combined with thermal contraction. First, a minimal epicanthoplasty flap to balance the lower eyelid was made cross the lower eyelid epicanthus, which connected with a 20-mm-long incision 1.5 mm below the lower eyelid margin. After removing the hypertrophic orbicularis oculi muscle running between the lower epicanthal fold and the medial canthal tendon, thermal cauterization was applied to increase lower eyelid rotation by creating adhesions between the lower eyelid retractor and tarsus. The residual medial edge was sutured to the corner of the epicanthus to decrease the lower eyelid epicanthus. The postoperative follow-up ranged from 3 to 24 months. We retrospectively analyzed cases to determine whether this approach decreased the lower eyelid epicanthal fold to equalize the tension of the lower eyelid. The surgical outcomes including the direction of lower eyelid eyelashes, complications, and refractive errors were evaluated. Results Data from each eye of 53 Chinese children (29 female, 24 males; mean age: 5.3 ± 2.3 years) who had undergone minimal lower eyelid epicanthoplasty combined with thermal contraction were included. During follow-up, recurrence was observed in just one of the 106 eyes (0.94%), and two eyes (1.89%) showed under-correction. No visible scars formed in the postoperative period. All patients’ parents were satisfied with the cosmetic results and had no serious complaints. Transient potential receptor vanilloid 4(TRPV4)is a cluster of non-selective cation channels presented on cell membranes. They are important mediators of sensory signals that regulate cell function and signaling pathways. TRPV4 is widely expressed in various ocular tissues and can participate in a variety of physiological functions, including osmotic pressure regulation, Ca2+ homeostasis, apoptosis and autophagy. It plays an important role in normal physiological functions and different pathology. Recent studies have revealed that TRPV4 is closely correlated to corneal epithelial injury, glaucoma, age-related cataract, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, retinal detachment and other diseases. Besides, studies also showed that TRPV4 regulates the occurrence and development of its related ophthalmic diseases. This paper briefly reviewed the research progress on TRPV4 pathway in ophthalmic diseases, so as to provide ideas for the clinical treatment of ophthalmopathy.

Abstract Background Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in microRNA (miRNA) binding sites can affect the interactions between miRNAs and target genes, which is related to cancer susceptibility and tumorigenesis. However, the association between SNPs located in miR-17-92 cluster binding sites and ESCC risk remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between polymorphisms in miR-17-92 cluster binding sites and ESCC susceptibility. Methods Six SNPs in the binding sites of miR-17-92 cluster were selected using bioinformatics databases, and their association with ESCC risk was investigated in a case-control study (including 488 cases and 512 controls) based on the population from high incidence areas of ESCC in China. We evaluated the SNP-SNP and SNP-smoking interactions using generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR). Moreover, the expression of the miR-17-92 cluster and its target genes was determined in ESCC and adjacent normal tissues by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The dual-luciferase reporter assay was conducted to verify the effect of SNPs on the binding affinity between miRNAs and target genes. Results We found that the SNP rs1804506 C > T had a significant association with the decreased ESCC risk. The SNP rs1804506 T allele was associated with a significantly decreased risk of ESCC in the additive model (OR = 0.817, 95% CI = 0.681–0.981, P = 0.030). The rs1804506 T allele had more striking effects on reducing ESCC risk in older individuals, female or non-smoker subgroups. We also found a significant interaction effect between rs1366600 and smoking by GMDR methods (P = 0.011). Additionally, the expression levels of miR-19a-3p and TGFBR3 were significantly downregulated in ESCC tissues compared with normal tissues, and the carriers of rs1804506 TT genotype had lower expression level of TGFBR3 than those of rs1804506 CC/CT genotype. Following dual-luciferase reporter assay showed that the rs1804506 T allele reduced the binding of miR-19a-3p and TGFBR3 3′-UTR. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the rs1804506 polymorphism in miR-17-92 cluster binding sites contributes to the susceptibility of ESCC, which might provide new clues and scientific evidence for the etiology and biomarkers for the prevention and treatment of ESCC.

Abstract Androgen receptor (AR) plays an important role in the progression of prostate cancer and has been targeted by castration or AR-antagonists. The emergence of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) after androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is inevitable. However, it is not entirely clear how ADT fails or how it causes resistance. Through analysis of RNA-seq data, we nominate ARHGEF2 as a pivotal androgen-repressed gene. We show that ARHGEF2 is directly suppressed by androgen/AR. AR occupies the enhancer and communicates with the promoter region of ARHGEF2. Functionally, ARHGEF2 is important for the growth, lethal phenotype, and survival of CRPC cells and tumor xenografts. Correspondingly, AR inhibition or AR antagonist treatment can restore ARHGEF2 expression, thereby allowing prostate cancer cells to induce treatment resistance and tolerance. Overall, our findings provide an explanation for the contradictory clinical results that ADT resistance may be caused by the up-regulation of ARHGEF2 and provide a novel target.

Dry eye(DE)is a multi-factorial ocular surface disease. The mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of DE is still unclear. Inflammation and immune response are considered to be one of the core mechanisms among the pathogenesis of DE. Neuropeptides are small molecular peptides generated after the sensory nerve endings damaged or stimulated. They play an important role in triggering and regulating inflammatory response. Thus, they are important mediums between the nervous system and immune system. Recent studies have revealed that neuropeptides secreted by ocular surface nerves are considered to be an important factor involved in the pathogenesis of DE. Therefore, this paper summarized the research progress on the roles of neuropeptides underlying the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of DE, analyzed the latest points of view and research hot spots, so as to provide references for the prevention and treatment of DE.

PurposeTo study the relationship between fundus alterations, including retinal thickness and microvascular changes, and dermatomyositis (DM) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).MethodsA total of 16 patients with DM (32 eyes) and 16 healthy controls (HCs; 32 eyes) participated in this study. Based on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study subzones, OCTA fundus data were divided into different layers and regions for comparison.ResultsThe full retinal thickness (RT) in the inner nasal (IN), outer nasal (ON), inner inferior (II), and outer inferior (OI) regions of patients with DM was significantly lower than that of HCs (P < 0.001). The inner layer RT was also significantly lower in the IN, ON, II, and OI regions in patients with DM (P < 0.001). The outer layer RT was lower only in the II region in patients with DM compared to HCs (P < 0.001). The full RT of the II region was more sensitive to the pathological changes of disease since its ROC curve had an AUC of 0.9028, 95% CI: 0.8159–0.9898. Meanwhile, the superficial vessel density (SVD) of patients with DM was significantly lower in the IN, ON, II, and OI regions compared to HCs (P < 0.001). The AUC for region II was 0.9634 (95% CI: 0.9034–1.0), which indicated good diagnostic sensitivity.ConclusionOptical coherence tomography angiography can be used to evaluate relevant ocular lesions and monitor disease progression in patients with DM and interstitial lung disease.

AIM: To study the characteristics, relative distribution and to compare causes of red eye in ophthalmic clinics in Urumchi and Shanghai, China. METHODS: Data on continuous cases of red-eye patients admitted to the Ophthalmology Center of Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University were collected between November 2018 and September 2019. Demographic data, the incidence of red eye and related disease distribution of all cases were obtained. The independent t-test method was used for age comparison, while the Chi-square test was used to compare classified data information. RESULTS: The information on 335 and 415 patients with red eyes in Shanghai and Urumchi were collected, respectively. The main causes of red eye were conjunctival disease and dry eye. The age of female patients with red eyes was significantly higher than that of males, and the proportion of female patients with dry eyes was also higher. Red-eye-related diseases occurred more frequently in patients over 46 years old than in those under 18, and dry eye was more common with increasing age. The incidence of infectious conjunctivitis in Urumchi was significantly higher than that in Shanghai, and allergic conjunctivitis occurred more frequently in spring, summer, or autumn than in winter (all P

AIM: To provide guidance for more accurate measurement of axial length(AL)of difficult measuring eyes by comparing the differences in the AL of the patient's difficult measuring eye with three methods of the sitting position, supine position A-scan and Lenstar 900(Lenstar, LS900). METHODS: Clinical case-control study. We selected 102 cases(102 eyes)including cataract patients with combined silicone oil filled, vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment and patients with dislocation of the lens or IOL in Zhengzhou Second Hospital from May 2019 to September 2020. AL were measured using LS900 and A-scan on sitting position and supine position respectively, and the results of the three methods were statistically analyzed.RESULTS: The detection rates of LS900 and A-scan axial measurement were 83% and 100% respectively. Background: Sjögren’s syndrome (SjS) is a rare autoimmune disease, and despite our knowledge of SjS, we still lack effective treatments. Chloroquine drugs used to treat autoimmune diseases are still the primary medicine for SjS but increase the risk of chloroquine retinopathy. Objectives: The objective of this study is to use Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) images to monitor the microvascular changes in the fundus of SjS patients after hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment and the feasibility of using them as diagnostic indicators. Design: This is a retrospective observational cohort study. Methods: Twelve healthy controls (HCs group; 24 eyes), 12 SjS patients (SjS group; 24 eyes), and 12 SjS patients treated with HCQ (HCQ group; 24 eyes) were recruited. Three-dimensional OCTA images of the retina were collected, and microvascular density was calculated for each eye. Abstract Background Previous studies have indicated that pain‐related diseases can result in significant functional alterations in the brain. However, differences in spontaneous brain activity in toothache (TA) patients remain unclear. Objective To investigate altered spontaneous brain activity in patients with TA and its underlying mechanisms using the resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging–fractional amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuation (rsfMRI–fALFF) technique. Methods Twelve patients with TA and 12 non‐toothache controls (NTCs) (matched for sex, age, and level of education) were enrolled. Spontaneous cerebral activity variations were investigated using the rsfMRI–fALFF technique in all individuals. The mean fALFF values of the TA patients and NTCs were classified using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The correlations between fALFF signals of distinct brain regions and clinical manifestations of TA patients were evaluated using Pearson's correlation analysis. Results TA patients showed lower fALFF values in the left superior frontal gyrus, medial; right superior frontal gyrus, dorsolateral; and left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (LDCG) than the NTCs. Moreover, ROC curve analysis indicated that the area under the curve of each cerebral region studied had high accuracy. Abstract Purpose To explore functional connectivity density (FCD) values of brain areas in children with strabismus and amblyopia (SA) based on blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals. Methods This study recruited 26 children (14 male, 12 females) with SA and 26 healthy children (14 male, 12 female) as healthy controls (HCs). Both groups matched in age, gender, educational level and socioeconomic background. While resting, all participants underwent fMRI scanning and global FCD (gFCD) and local FCD (lFCD) values were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were created to investigate whether there was a significant difference between children with SA and healthy controls. Results When compared with healthy controls, children with SA had significantly lower gFCD values in the right cerebellum, left putamen, and right superior frontal gyrus; however, the same metrics showed opposite changes in the right angular gyrus, left middle cingulate gyrus, left angular gyrus, right superior parietal gyrus, and right middle frontal gyrus. In children with SA, lFCD values were found to be remarkably decreased in regions of the middle right temporal pole, right cerebellum, left putamen, left hippocampus, right hippocampus, left thalamus, left cerebellum; values were increased in the right superior parietal gyrus as compared with healthy controls. Conclusion We noted abnormal neural connectivity in some brain areas of children with SA; detailing such connectivity aberrations is useful in exploring the pathophysiology of SA and providing useful information for future clinical management.

Pseudorabies (PR) is an acute and severe infectious disease caused by pseudorabies virus (PRV). Once the virus infects pigs, it is difficult to eliminate, resulting in major economic losses to the global pig industry. In addition, reports of human infection with PRV suggest that the virus is a potential threat to human health; thus, its significance to public health should be considered. In this paper, the anti-PRV activities of emodin in vitro and in vivo, and its mechanism of action were studied. The results showed that emodin inhibited the proliferation of PRV in PK15 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 0.127 mg/mL and a selection index of 5.52. The addition of emodin at different stages of viral infection showed that emodin inhibited intracellular replication. Emodin significantly inhibited the expression of the IE180, EP0, UL29, UL44, US6, and UL27 genes of PRV within 48 h. Emodin also significantly inhibited the expression of PRV gB and gD proteins. The molecular docking results suggested that emodin might form hydrogen bonds with PRV gB and gD proteins and affect the structure of viral proteins. Emodin effectively inhibited the apoptosis induced by PRV infection. Moreover, emodin showed a good protective effect on PRV-infected mice. During the experimental period, all the control PRV-infected mice died resulting in a survival rate of 0%, while the survival rate of emodin-treated mice was 28.5%. Emodin also significantly inhibited the replication of PRV in the heart, liver, brain, kidneys and lungs of mice and alleviated tissue and organ damage caused by PRV infection. Emodin was able to combat viral infection by regulating the levels of the cytokines TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-4 in the sera of infected mice. These results indicate that emodin has good anti-PRV activity in vitro and in vivo, and is expected to be a new agent for the prevention and control of PRV infection.

With an upsurge of biodegradable metal implants, the research and application of Mg alloys in the gastrointestinal environment of the digestive tract have been of great interest. Digestive enzymes, mainly pepsin in the stomach and pancreatin in the small intestine, are widespread in the gastrointestinal tract, but their effect on the degradation of Mg alloys has not been well understood. In this study, we investigated the impacts of pepsin and pancreatin on the degradation of Mg-2Zn alloy wires. The results showed that the pepsin and pancreatin had completely different even the opposite effects on the degradation of Mg, although they both affected the degradation product layer. The degradation rate of Mg wire declined with the addition of pepsin in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) but rose with the addition of pancreatin in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The opposite trends in degradation rate also resulted in completely different degradation morphologies in wires surface, where the pitting corrosion in SGF was inhibited because of the physical barrier effect of pepsin adsorption. In contrast, the adsorption of pancreatin affected the integrity of magnesium hydrogen phosphate film, causing a relatively uneven degraded surface. These results may help us to understand the role of different digestive enzymes in the degradation of magnesium and facilitate the development and clinical application of magnesium alloy implanted devices for the digestive tract.

Abstract This study proposes the use of the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) technique to investigate structural alterations of the cerebral cortex in patients with strabismus and amblyopia (SA). Sixteen patients with SA and sixteen healthy controls (HCs) underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Original whole brain images were analyzed using the VBM method. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between mean gray matter volume (GMV) and clinical manifestations. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was applied to classify the mean GMV values of the SA group and HCs. Compared with the HCs, GMV values in the SA group showed a significant difference in the right superior temporal gyrus, posterior and anterior lobes of the cerebellum, bilateral parahippocampal gyrus, and left anterior cingulate cortex. The mean GMV value in the right superior temporal gyrus, posterior and anterior lobes of the cerebellum, and bilateral parahippocampal gyrus were negatively correlated with the angle of strabismus. The ROC curve analysis of each cerebral region confirmed the accuracy of the area under the curve. Patients with SA have reduced GMV values in some brain regions. These findings might help to reveal the potential pathogenesis of SA and its relationship with the atrophy of specific regions of the brain.

Abstract Background Dietary patterns and symptoms research among Chinese with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and its precursor lesions is limited, especially as it relates to multiple food consumption and multiple co-occurring symptoms. The aim of our study was to identify the dietary patterns and severity of symptom classes with the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its histological precursor lesions, and develop a risk prediction model for different stages of esophageal disease. Methods We analyzed data from a multicenter cross-sectional study carried out in ESCC high incidence areas between 2017 and 2018, which included 34,707 individuals aged 40–69 years. Dietary patterns and severity of symptom classes were derived by applying a latent class analysis (LCA). A multiple logistic regression model was used to derive the odds ratio (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for ESCC and the different stages of esophageal disease according to the dietary patterns and severity of symptom classes identified. We built the risk prediction model by using a nomogram. Results We identified five dietary patterns and three severity of symptom classes. The dietary patterns were classified as follows: “Healthy”, “Western”, “Lower consumers-combination”, “Medium consumers-combination” and “Higher consumers-combination” patterns based on the intake of foods such as red meat, vegetables and fruits. The severity of symptoms was categorized into “Asymptomatic”, “Mild symptoms” and “Overt symptoms” classes based on health-related symptoms reported by the participants. Compared to the “Healthy” pattern, the other four patterns were all associated with an increased risk of esophageal disease. Similarly, the other two symptom classes present different degrees of increased risk of esophageal disease compared to the “Asymptomatic”. The nomograms reflect the good predictive ability of the model. Conclusion Among individuals aged 40–69 years in high incidence regions of upper gastrointestinal cancer, the results supplied that subjects with diets rich in livestock and poultry meat and low in fruits and vegetables and subjects with typical symptoms were at increased ESCC risk. The findings highlight the importance of considering food and symptom combinations in cancer risk evaluation.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is one of the most significant pathogens of swine. In recent years, the continual emergence of novel PRV variants has caused substantial economic losses in the global pig industry. PRV can infect humans leading to symptoms of acute encephalitis with implications for public health. Thus, new measures are urgently needed to prevent PRV infection. This study evaluated the anti-PRV capability of dandelion aqueous extract (DAE) in vitro and in vivo. DAE was found to inhibit the multiplication of the PRV TJ strain in PK15 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.2559 mg/mL and a selectivity index (SI) of 14.4. DAE inhibited the adsorption and replication stages of the PRV life cycle in vitro, and the expression of IE180, EP0, UL29, UL44, and UL52 was inhibited in the presence of DAE. In vivo experiment results of mice show that a 0.5 g/kg dose of DAE injected intraperitoneally protected 28.6% of the mice from the lethal challenge; decreased the viral load in the liver, lung, brain, heart, and kidney of PRV-infected mice; and attenuated brain damage caused by PRV infection. Furthermore, DAE could also ameliorate viral infection through regulation of the levels of cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-4) in PRV-infected mouse serum. These results demonstrated that DAE exhibited potent inhibitory capability against PRV infection in vitro and in vivo; DAE is therefore expected to be a candidate TCM herb for use against PRV infection.

AIM: To assess changed spontaneous brain activity in hyperthyroid exophthalmos (HE) patients by the amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method, and to analyze the correlation between brain activity and ALFF values in these patients. METHODS: Totally 18 HE and 18 hyperthyroid non-exophthalmos (HNE) patients were enrolled. The participants were tested by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to classify the ALFF values of the study population. Pearson's correlation analysis was utilized to evaluate the relationship between the ALFF values obtained from different brain areas and clinical manifestations. RESULTS: Contrary to HNE patients, we observed lower ALFF values in the left calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex (LCFSC) in HE patients. In the ROC curve analysis of the LCFSC, the area under the curve reflected a high degree of accuracy. In addition, there was positive correlation between mean ALFF values of the LCFSC and the best-corrected visual acuity of the affected eyes. CONCLUSION: The study displays abnormal brain activity in LCFSC in patients with HE, which might suggest pathological mechanism of visual impairment of HE patients.

AIM: To investigate the retinal vascular network alterations in eyes of patients with pterygium. METHODS: Totally 18 left eyes from 18 female pterygium patients and 18 left eyes from 18 female healthy control subjects were enrolled. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images were generated of the superficial retinal layer and deeper retinal layer of the macular retina for each eye. The microvascular (MIR) and macrovascular (MAR) densities were calculated and MIR, MAR, and total microvascular (TMI) density was compared in the healthy control and pterygium groups. RESULTS: In pterygium group, in the superficial retinal layer, the vascular density in superficial MIR, superior right (SR), inferior right (IR), right (R), superficial central annuli (SC)1, SC2, and SC3 decreased significantly in the macular area (P0.05). CONCLUSION: OCTA findings suggest that pterygium patients present with decreased retinal MIR density, and the major vascular alterations occurr mainly on the bitamporal side. The vascular density of the superficial SC1, SC2, SC3 adjacent to the foveal and deep layer of DC2, DC2 regions, significantly decreased.
