Construction workers exert intense physical effort and experience serious safety and health risks in hazardous working environments. Quiet stance and kneeling are among the most common postures performed by construction workers during their daily work. This paper analyzes lower-limb joint influence on neural balance control strategies using the frequency behavior of the intersection point of ground reaction forces. To evaluate the impact of elevation and wearable knee exoskeletons on postural balance and welding task performance, we design and integrate virtual- and mixed-reality (VR/MR) to simulate elevated environments and welding tasks. A linear quadratic regulator-controlled triple- and double-link inverted pendulum model is used for balance strategy quantification in quiet stance and kneeling, respectively. Extensive multi-subject experiments are conducted to evaluate the usability of occupational exoskeletons in destabilizing construction environments. The quantified balance strategies capture the significance of knee joint during balance control of quiet stance and kneeling gaits. Results show that center of pressure sway area reduced up to 62% in quiet stance and 39% in kneeling for subjects tested in high-elevation VR/MR worksites when provided knee exoskeleton assistance. Gait control of legged robotic walkers on dynamically moving surfaces (e.g., ships and vehicles) is challenging due to the limited balance control actuation and unknown surface motion. We present a contingent model predictive control (CMPC) for bipedal walker locomotion on moving surfaces with a linear inverted pendulum (LIP) model. The CMPC is a robust design that is built on regular model predictive control (MPC) to incorporate the "worst case" predictive motion of the moving surface. Integrated with an LIP model and walking stability constraints, the CMPC framework generates a set of consistent control inputs considering to anticipated uncertainties of the surface motions. Simulation results and comparison with the regular MPC for bipedal walking are conducted and presented. Legged robots have demonstrated high efficiency and effectiveness in unstructured and dynamic environments. However, it is still challenging for legged robots to achieve rapid and efficient locomotion on deformable, yielding substrates, such as granular terrains. We present an enhanced resistive force model for bipedal walkers on soft granular terrains by introducing effective intrusion depth correction. The enhanced force model captures fundamental kinetic results considering the robot foot shape, walking gait speed variation, and energy expense. The model is validated by extensive foot intrusion experiments with a bipedal robot. The results confirm the model accuracy on the given type of granular terrains. Current studies on human locomotion focus mainly on solid ground walking conditions. In this paper, we present a biomechanic comparison of human walking locomotion on solid ground and sand. A novel dataset containing 3-dimensional motion and biomechanical data from 20 able-bodied adults for locomotion on solid ground and sand is collected. We present the data collection methods and report the sensor data along with the kinematic and kinetic profiles of joint biomechanics. A comprehensive analysis of human gait and joint stiffness profiles is presented. The kinematic and kinetic analysis reveals that human walking locomotion on sand shows different ground reaction forces and joint torque profiles, compared with those patterns from walking on solid ground. These gait differences reflect that humans adopt motion control strategies for yielding terrain conditions such as sand. Legged robots are well-suited for broad exploration tasks in complex environments with yielding terrain. Understanding robotic foot-terrain interactions is critical for safe locomotion and walking efficiency for legged robots. This paper presents a reduced-order resistive-force model for robotic-foot/mud interactions. We focus on vertical robot locomotion on mud and propose a visco-elasto-plastic analog to model the foot/mud interaction forces. Dynamic behaviors such as mud visco-elasticity, withdrawing cohesive suction, and yielding are explicitly discussed with the proposed model. Besides comparing with dry/wet granular materials, mud intrusion experiments are conducted to validate the force model. The dependency of the model parameter on water content and foot velocity is also studied to reveal in-depth model properties under various conditions. We present a simultaneous sensor-based inspection and footprint coverage (SIFC) planning and control design with applications to autonomous robotic crack mapping and filling. The main challenge of the SIFC problem lies in the coupling of complete sensing (for mapping) and robotic footprint (for filling) coverage tasks. Initially, we assume known target information (e.g., crack) and employ classic cell decomposition methods to achieve complete sensing coverage of the workspace and complete robotic footprint coverage using the least-cost route. Subsequently, we generalize the algorithm to handle unknown target information, allowing the robot to scan and incrementally construct the target graph online while conducting robotic footprint coverage. The online polynomial-time SIFC planning algorithm minimizes the total robot traveling distance, guarantees complete sensing coverage of the entire workspace, and achieves near-optimal robotic footprint coverage, as demonstrated through empirical experiments. For the demonstrated application, we design coordinated nozzle motion control with the planned robot trajectory to efficiently fill all cracks within the robot's footprint. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the algorithm's design, performance, and comparisons. The SIFC algorithm offers a high-efficiency motion planning solution for various robotic applications requiring simultaneous sensing and actuation coverage.

External and internal convertible (EIC) form-based motion control is one of the effective designs of simultaneously trajectory tracking and balance for underactuated balance robots. Under certain conditions, the EIC-based control design however leads to uncontrolled robot motion. We present a Gaussian process (GP)-based data-driven learning control for underactuated balance robots with the EIC modeling structure. Two GP-based learning controllers are presented by using the EIC structure property. The partial EIC (PEIC)-based control design partitions the robotic dynamics into a fully actuated subsystem and one reduced-order underactuated system. The null-space EIC (NEIC)-based control compensates for the uncontrolled motion in a subspace, while the other closed-loop dynamics are not affected. Under the PEIC- and NEIC-based, the tracking and balance tasks are guaranteed and convergence rate and bounded errors are achieved without causing any uncontrolled motion by the original EIC-based control. We validate the results and demonstrate the GP-based learning control design performance using two inverted pendulum platforms.

This study presents a physics-informed machine learning-based control method for nonlinear dynamic systems with highly noisy measurements. Existing data-driven control methods that use machine learning for system identification cannot effectively cope with highly noisy measurements, resulting in unstable control performance. To address this challenge, the present study extends current physics-informed machine learning capabilities for modeling nonlinear dynamics with control and integrates them into a model predictive control framework. To demonstrate the capability of the proposed method we test and validate with two noisy nonlinear dynamic systems: the chaotic Lorenz 3 system, and turning machine tool. Analysis of the results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art benchmarks as measured by both modeling accuracy and control performance for nonlinear dynamic systems under high-noise conditions.

Emerging applications of robotics, and concerns about their impact, require the research community to put human-centric objectives front-and-center. To meet this challenge, we advocate an interdisciplinary approach, socially cognizant robotics, which synthesizes technical and social science methods. We argue that this approach follows from the need to empower stakeholder participation (from synchronous human feedback to asynchronous societal assessment) in shaping AI-driven robot behavior at all levels, and leads to a range of novel research perspectives and problems both for improving robots' interactions with individuals and impacts on society. Drawing on these arguments, we develop best practices for socially cognizant robot design that balance traditional technology-based metrics (e.g. efficiency, precision and accuracy) with critically important, albeit challenging to measure, human and society-based metrics.

We present object handling and transporting by a multi-robot team with a deformable sheet as a carrier. Due to the deformability of the sheet and the high dimension of the whole system, it is challenging to clearly describe all the possible positions of the object on the sheet for a given formation of the multi-robot system. A complete forward kinematics (FK) method is proposed for object handling by an $N$-mobile robot team with a deformable sheet. Based on the virtual variable cables model (VVCM), a constrained quadratic problem (CQP) is formulated by combining the geometric constraints and minimum potential energy conditions of the system. Analytical solutions to the CQP are presented and then further verified with the force closure condition. We present an FK algorithm based on the FK method to obtain all possible solutions with the given initial sheet shape and the robot team formation. This paper presents a nonlinear control design for highly underactuated balance robots, which possess more numbers of unactuated degree-of-freedom (DOF) than actuated ones. To address the challenge of simultaneously trajectory tracking of actuated coordinates and balancing of unactuated coordinates, the proposed control converts a robot dynamics into a series of cascaded subsystems and each of them is considered virtually actuated. To achieve the control goal, we sequentially design and update the virtual and actual control inputs to incorporate the balance task such that the unactuated coordinates are balanced to their instantaneous equilibrium. The closed-loop dynamics are shown to be stable and the tracking errors exponentially converge towards a neighborhood near the origin. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control design by using a triple-inverted pendulum cart system.

External and internal convertible (EIC) form-based motion control (i.e., EIC-based control) is one of the effective approaches for underactuated balance robots. By sequentially controller design, trajectory tracking of the actuated subsystem and balance of the unactuated subsystem can be achieved simultaneously. However, with certain conditions, there exists uncontrolled robot motion under the EIC-based control. We first identify these conditions and then propose an enhanced EIC-based control with a Gaussian process data-driven robot dynamic model. Under the new enhanced EIC-based control, the stability and performance of the closed-loop system is guaranteed. We demonstrate the GP-enhanced EIC-based control experimentally using two examples of underactuated balance robots.

It is important to understand how bipedal walkers balance and walk effectively on granular materials, such as sand and loose dirt, etc. This paper first presents a computational approach to obtain the motion and energy analysis of bipedal walkers on granular terrains and then discusses an optimization method for the robot foot-shape contour design for energy efficiently walking. We first present the foot-terrain interaction characteristics of the intrusion process using the resistive force theory that provides comprehensive force laws. Using human gait profiles, we compute and compare the ground reaction forces and the external work for walking gaits with various foot shapes on granular terrains. A multi-objective optimization problem is finally formulated for the foot contour design considering energy saving and walking efficiency. It is interesting to find out a non-convex foot shape gives the best performance in term of energy and locomotion efficiency on hard granular terrains. This paper presents a safety guaranteed control method for an autonomous vehicle ski-stunt maneuver, that is, a vehicle moving with two one-side wheels. To capture the vehicle dynamics precisely, a Gaussian process model is used as additional correction to the nominal model that is obtained from physical principles. We construct a probabilistic control barrier function (CBF) to guarantee the planar motion safety. The CBF and the balance equilibrium manifold are enforced as the constraints into a safety critical control form. Under the proposed control method, the vehicle avoids the obstacle collision and safely maintain the balance for autonomous ski-stunt maneuvers. We conduct numerical simulation validation to demonstrate the control design. Preliminary experiment results are also presented to confirm the learning-based motion control using a scaled RC truck for autonomous ski-stunt maneuvers.

As a single-track mobile platform, bikebot (i.e., bicycle-based robot) has attractive navigation capability to pass through narrow, off-road terrain with high-speed and high-energy efficiency. However, running crossing step-like obstacles creates challenges for intrinsically unstable, underactuated bikebots. This paper presents a novel autonomous bikebot control with assistive leg actuation to navigate crossing obstacles. The proposed design integrates the external/internal convertible-based control with leg-assisted impulse control. The leg-terrain interaction generates assistive impulsive torques to help maintain the navigation and balance capability when running across obstacles. The control performance is analyzed and guaranteed. The experimental results confirm that under the control design, the bikebot can smoothly run crossing multiple step-like obstacles with height more than one third of the wheel radius. The comparison results demonstrate the superior performance than those under only the velocity and steering control without leg assistive impulsive actuation.

Bikebot manipulation has advantages of the single-track robot mobility and manipulation dexterity. We present a coordinated pose control of mobile manipulation with the stationary bikebot. The challenges of the bikebot manipulation include the limited steering balance capability of the unstable bikebot and kinematic redundancy of the manipulator. We first present the steering balance model to analyze and explore the maximum steering capability to balance the stationary platform. A balancing equilibrium manifold is then proposed to describe the necessary condition to fulfill the simultaneous platform balance and posture control of the end-effector. A coordinated planning and control design is presented to determine the balance-prioritized posture control under kinematic and dynamic constraints. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the mechatronic design for autonomous plant inspection in agricultural applications. The results confirm the feasibility to use the bikebot manipulation for a plant inspection with end-effector position and orientation errors about 5 mm and 0.3 degs, respectively.

Using a deformable sheet to handle objects is convenient and found in many practical applications. For object manipulation through a deformable sheet that is held by multiple mobile robots, it is a challenging task to model the object-sheet interactions. We present a computational model and algorithm to capture the object position on the deformable sheet with changing robotic team formations. A virtual variable cables model (VVCM) is proposed to simplify the modeling of the robot-sheet-object system. With the VVCM, we further present a motion planner for the robotic team to transport the object in a three-dimensional (3D) cluttered environment. Simulation and experimental results with different robot team sizes show the effectiveness and versatility of the proposed VVCM. Ranging from cart-pole systems and autonomous bicycles to bipedal robots, control of these underactuated balance robots aims to achieve both external (actuated) subsystem trajectory tracking and internal (unactuated) subsystem balancing tasks with limited actuation authority. This paper proposes a learning model-based control framework for underactuated balance robots. The key idea to simultaneously achieve tracking and balancing tasks is to design control strategies in slow- and fast-time scales, respectively. In slow-time scale, model predictive control (MPC) is used to generate the desired internal subsystem trajectory that encodes the external subsystem tracking performance and control input. In fast-time scale, the actual internal trajectory is stabilized to the desired internal trajectory by using an inverse dynamics controller. The coupling effects between the external and internal subsystems are captured through the planned internal trajectory profile and the dual structural properties of the robotic systems. The control design is based on Gaussian processes (GPs) regression model that are learned from experiments without need of priori knowledge about the robot dynamics nor successful balance demonstration. The GPs provide estimates of modeling uncertainties of the robotic systems and these uncertainty estimations are incorporated in the MPC design to enhance the control robustness to modeling errors. The learning-based control design is analyzed with guaranteed stability and performance. Selective laser melting (SLM) is one of emerging processes for effective metal additive manufacturing. Due to complex heat exchange and material phase changes, it is challenging to accurately model the SLM dynamics and design robust control of SLM process. In this paper, we first present a data-driven Gaussian process based dynamic model for SLM process and then design a model predictive control to regulate the melt pool size. Physical and process constraints are considered in the controller design. The learning model and control design are tested and validated with high-fidelity finite element simulation. The comparison results with other control design demonstrate the efficacy of the control design.

High-performance actuators are crucial to enable mechanical versatility of lower-limb wearable robots, which are required to be lightweight, highly backdrivable, and with high bandwidth. State-of-the-art actuators, e.g., series elastic actuators (SEAs), have to compromise bandwidth to improve compliance (i.e., backdrivability). In this paper, we describe the design and human-robot interaction modeling of a portable hip exoskeleton based on our custom quasi-direct drive (QDD) actuation (i.e., a high torque density motor with low ratio gear). We also present a model-based performance benchmark comparison of representative actuators in terms of torque capability, control bandwidth, backdrivability, and force tracking accuracy. This paper aims to corroborate the underlying philosophy of "design for control", namely meticulous robot design can simplify control algorithms while ensuring high performance. Following this idea, we create a lightweight bilateral hip exoskeleton (overall mass is 3.4 kg) to reduce joint loadings during normal activities, including walking and squatting. Experimental results indicate that the exoskeleton is able to produce high nominal torque (17.5 Nm), high backdrivability (0.4 Nm backdrive torque), high bandwidth (62.4 Hz), and high control accuracy (1.09 Nm root mean square tracking error, i.e., 5.4% of the desired peak torque). Its controller is versatile to assist walking at different speeds (0.8-1.4 m/s) and squatting at 2 s cadence.
