Preconditioning nerve injury enhances axonal regeneration of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in part by driving pro-regenerative perineuronal macrophage activation. How these macrophages influence the neuronal capacity of axon regeneration remains elusive. We report that oncomodulin (ONCM) is produced from the regeneration-associated macrophages and strongly influences regeneration of DRG sensory axons. We also attempted to promote sensory axon regeneration by nanogel-mediated delivery of ONCM to DRGs.

This study offers a critical analysis of refugee policy in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) since the national government in 2013 enacted a law intended to improve its treatment of refugees and asylum seekers and align itself more closely with the principles of the 1951 Refugee Convention. The article begins by focusing on a major controversy that arose in 2018, following the arrival of more than 500 asylum seekers from Yemen, an episode that revealed how considerable public antipathy toward refugees presents a social and cultural problem for South Korea as it charts a course for improvement of its treatment of refugees. The analysis then turns to numerous problems at the nexus of law and society that continue to plague the refugee status determination process and, in many instances, to deny basic rights to a rapidly growing number of asylum seekers in South Korea. The article concludes by showing how, despite these problems, South Korea is better positioned than many of the world’s more affluent constitutional democracies to harmonize its national interests with its responsibilities to make a meaningful contribution to ongoing global efforts to protect and accommodate refugees.

Kinases are critical components of intracellular signaling pathways and have been extensively investigated with regard to their roles in cancer. p21-activated kinase-1 (PAK1) is a serine/threonine kinase that has been previously implicated in numerous biological processes, such as cell migration, cell cycle progression, cell motility, invasion, and angiogenesis, in glioma and other cancers. However, the signaling network linked to PAK1 is not fully defined. We previously reported a large-scale yeast genetic interaction screen using toxicity as a readout to identify candidate PAK1 genetic interactions. En masse transformation of the PAK1 gene into 4,653 homozygous diploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast deletion mutants identified ∼400 candidates that suppressed yeast toxicity. Here we selected 19 candidate PAK1 genetic interactions that had human orthologs and were expressed in glioma for further examination in mammalian cells, brain slice cultures, and orthotopic glioma models. RNAi and pharmacological inhibition of potential PAK1 interactors confirmed that DPP4, KIF11, mTOR, PKM2, SGPP1, TTK, and YWHAE regulate PAK1-induced cell migration and revealed the importance of genes related to the mitotic spindle, proteolysis, autophagy, and metabolism in PAK1-mediated glioma cell migration, drug resistance, and proliferation. AKT1 was further identified as a downstream mediator of the PAK1-TTK genetic interaction. Taken together, these data provide a global view of PAK1-mediated signal transduction pathways and point to potential new drug targets for glioma therapy.

Preconditioning nerve injury drives pro-regenerative perineuronal macrophage activation in dorsal root ganglia (DRG). The present study reports that oncomodulin (ONCM) is produced from the regeneration-associated macrophages (RAMs) and strongly influences regeneration of DRG sensory axons. Preconditioning injury upregulated ONCM in DRG macrophages in a CCR2 dependent manner. ONCM in macrophages was necessary to produce RAMs in the in vitro model of neuron-macrophage interaction and played an essential role in for preconditioning or CCL2-induced neurite outgrowth. ONCM potently increased neurite outgrowth in cultured DRG neurons by activating a distinct gene set, particularly neuropeptide-related genes. Increasing extracellularly secreted ONCM in DRGs sufficiently enhanced capacity of neurite outgrowth. To achieve sustained ONCM activity in vivo, recombinant ONCM was encapsulated by a reducible epsilon-poly(L-lysine)-nanogel (REPL-NG) system based on electrostatic interaction. Localized injection of REPL-NG/ONCM complex into DRGs achieved a remarkable long-range axonal regeneration beyond spinal cord lesion, surpassing the extent of the preconditioning effects.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is an Internet standard that is used to express and convert data. In order to find the necessary information out of XML documents, you need a search system for XML documents. In this research, we have developed a search system that can find documents that matches the structure and content of a given XML document, making the best use of XML structure. Search metrics take account of the similarity in tag names, tag values, and the structure of tags. After a search, the system displays the ranked results in the order of aggregate similarity. Three methods of query are provided: keyword search which is conventional; search with tag names and their values; and search with XML documents. These three methods enable users to choose the method that best suits their preference, resulting in the increase of the usefulness of the system
