Nitrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (N:ta-C) films prepared by the filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique were studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature dependent resistance measurement. As the nitrogen flow rate varies from 0 to 20 sccm, the nitrogen content in the deposited film increases from 0 to 4.6 at.%. Curve fitting of the C 1s and N 1s XPS spectra shows that the C-C sp[SUP3] fraction decreases with an increase in nitrogen content and that the nitrogen atoms are mainly bonded in sp[SUP2] C-N bonds. The pure ta-C film has a work function of 4.35 eV and the N:ta-C films have a value around 4.55 eV. With an increase in nitrogen flow rate, the intensity ratio of the D peak to the G peak, I[SUBD]/i[SUBG] increases monotonously from 0.44 to 1.25 and the G peak width decreases from 220 to 199 cm[SUP-1]. The rodent model has been largely used for understanding specific disease pathophysiology, with low cost and the large spectrum from genetic strains. Here, we present a diffuse speckle contrast analysis (DSCA) system to measure blood flow changes non-invasively in rat's thigh and paw during femoral arterial occlusion (FAO) surgery which is the procedure for inducing peripheral arterial disease. The blood flow index in rat's paw showed significant decrease according to arterial occlusion. Moreover, we analyzed cross-correlation between two measurement positions. The results showed the affinity with hemodynamic response. In conclusion, the DSCA system secured the intraoperative blood flow monitoring during FAO surgery in a rat model.

An angiosome is a three dimensional volume of biological tissue which a specific artery governs. Although proven useful for vascular surgery, the direct relationship between arterial flow and microcirculation in specific angiosome remains controversial. Here, we present new optical approach, a four-channel diffuse speckle contrast analysis (DSCA) which can simultaneously measure blood perfusion at different foot area. Based on the hypothesis that same angiosome will support similar low frequency oscillation, we investigated cross-correlation among different DSCA channels. Our preliminary results show that the LFO signal from the channel closest to posterior tibial artery is leading the signal from the other channels.

Manual micro-surgical tasks are fundamentally divided into grasping, cutting and injecting maneuvers performed on biological tissues. Efficient dissection of fibrous tissue from the surface of the retina often requires grasping and cutting maneuvers carried out simultaneously. True bimanual surgery requires that the surgeon contend with the innate hand tremor of two hands at once as well as unpredicted patient's movement. In this study, we develop and test a dual SMART micro-surgical system to suppress bimanual hand tremor during micro-surgical dissection.

In poultry industry which is avian breeding program, the determination whether chick embryos survive in the artificial incubation periods or not is essential to reduce the financial resources. We developed the multi-channel diffuse speckle contrast analysis (DSCA) system composed of four optical fiber detectors enabling to achieve in-vivo measurements of deep tissue flow noninvasively. The system could confirm vital sign of the chick embryo in early incubation stage. Moreover, it demonstrates the change of relative blood flow index and depth information with simplicity, low cost, and flexibility.

Aims: The performance of three scanning CO(2) laser inactivation systems was assessed and included: a gantry system, a rapidly rotating mirror and a low-power hybrid system combining an oscillating mirror and rotary motion of the sample., Methods and Results: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were the target organisms on stainless steel, nutrient agar or moist collagen film and the laser power was varied from 2 to 1060 W (two laser sources). In general, a threshold energy density was identified, above which no inactivation was observed because the scanning velocity was too high (10 cm s(-1) for stainless steel, 660 W). Reducing the velocity increased the inactivation process until complete inactivation was observed at 1.3 cm s(-1) (E. coli, approximately 10(6) CFU per sample) and 0.82 cm s(-1) (S. aureus, approximately 10(8) CFU per sample); consequently, S. aureus organisms showed a greater resistance to laser irradiation. For the nutrient agar and collagen samples, the averages of the width of clearing were measured as a function of the translation velocity and the rates of inactivation (I(R), cm(2) s(-1)) were found; an optimum velocity was observed that produced the maximum rate of inactivation. At a laser power of 1060 W, the maximum value of I(R) was 140 cm(2) s(-1) ( approximately 10(7) CFU cm(-2)) for S. aureus on collagen and slightly less on nutrient agar (114 cm(2) s(-1), estimated from a best-fit polynomial, r(2) = 0.98)., Conclusions: A comparison of the low- and high-power lasers produced values of 0.09 cm(2) s(-1) W(-1) (i.e. I(R) per Watt delivered) for S. aureus on nutrient agar with the low-power laser at 13 W and on collagen 0.13 cm(2) s(-1) W(-1) for 1060 W. The rate of inactivation was found to be a function of the laser power, translation velocity and properties of the substrate media. The three laser inactivation systems successfully demonstrated the potential speed, efficiency and application of such systems., Significance and Impact of the Study: Laser scanning systems offer the potential for rapid and efficient inactivation of surfaces, eliminating the need for chemical treatment.
