Abstract Lead-free Cs3Bi2I9 single crystals have been demonstrated to be promising materials for direct X-ray detectors with remarkable performance. However, their application for 2D X-ray imaging is hindered by their time-consuming preparation and limited crystal size. In this paper, a thick Cs3Bi2I9 perovskite film fabricated via facile spray coating at a low processing temperature, which increases the area of the photoactive film, reduces the processing time, decreases the energy budget and the production cost, and enhances the production yield due to high material utilization, has great potential for commercial applications. Careful control of the processing temperature and intervals during spray coating results in a dense and thick perovskite film with well-stacked perovskite domains. The compact perovskite film enhances the charge transport capability of the Cs3Bi2I9 perovskite film and reduces the dark current density of the X-ray detector. The resultant X-ray detector, prepared through a two-step spray coating process, exhibited a sensitivity of 127.23 μC Gyair −1 cm−2 and a detection limit of 7.4 μGyair s−1. In addition, the device delivers long-term stability with a consistent photoresponse when exposed to consecutive X-ray pulse irradiation.

Colon cancer has a poor clinical response to anti-PD1 therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cordycepin on the efficacy of anti-PD1 treatment in colon cancer. The viability of CT26 mouse colon carcinoma cells, cell-cycle progression, morphology, and the expression of mRNA and protein were assessed. A syngeneic animal model was established by implanting CT26 cells into BALB/c mice for in vivo experiments. Multi-parameter flow cytometry was used to analyze the splenic cell lineages and tumor microenvironment (TME). The in vitro data revealed that cordycepin, but not adenosine, inhibited CT26 cell viability. The protein, but not mRNA, expression levels of A2AR and A2BR were suppressed by cordycepin but not by adenosine in CT26 cells. The combination of cordycepin, but not adenosine, with anti-PD1 exhibited a greater tumor-inhibitory effect than anti-PD1 alone as well as inhibited the expression of A2AR and A2BR in splenic macrophages. In the TME, the combination of cordycepin and anti-PD1 increased the number of CD3+ T cells and neutrophils and decreased the number of natural killer (NK) cells. Overall, cordycepin augmented the antitumor effects of anti-PD1 against mouse colon carcinoma cells and inhibited the expression of the adenosine receptors A2AR and A2BR in splenic macrophages and intratumoral NK cells.

Abstract An impressive number of COVID-19 data catalogs exist. However, none are fully optimized for data science applications. Inconsistent naming and data conventions, uneven quality control, and lack of alignment between disease data and potential predictors pose barriers to robust modeling and analysis. To address this gap, we generated a unified dataset that integrates and implements quality checks of the data from numerous leading sources of COVID-19 epidemiological and environmental data. We use a globally consistent hierarchy of administrative units to facilitate analysis within and across countries. The dataset applies this unified hierarchy to align COVID-19 epidemiological data with a number of other data types relevant to understanding and predicting COVID-19 risk, including hydrometeorological data, air quality, information on COVID-19 control policies, vaccine data, and key demographic characteristics.

Metal halide perovskite as an emitter has extremely high color purity, but the generally poor morphology of the perovskite layer restricts the performance of the emitter. The additive of a suitable polymer can greatly boost the uniformity of the spin-coated perovskite film. The all-inorganic perovskite layer deposited by the solution method has a multi-crystalline structure. Besides, there are a lot of defects and grain boundaries on the surface, and the carriers will undergo non-radiative recombination at these defects. In this study, Cs1-xRbxPbBr3 was prepared by introducing Rb+ cations with smaller ionic radius to partially replace Cs+ cations, and combined with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and (1,3,5-benzinetriyl)tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi) blended composite film as the light-emitting layer, that can increase the film coverage and radiative recombination efficiency of the perovskite film. The polymer PEO was introduced as a buffer layer deposited on the poly-TPD hole transport layer (HTL) to to enhance the hydrophilicity and passivate the poly-TPD HTL/perovskites interface in order to obtain high-efficiency perovskite light-emitting diodes. By adjusting the concentration of the PEO buffer layer, the champion luminance and external quantum efficiency are 25650 cd/m2 and 0.844 %, respectively.

Abstract Background The successful management of patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with inhaled ciclesonide has been reported, however few studies have investigated its application among hospitalized patients. Methods This retrospective cohort study enrolled all adult patients admitted to our hospital with confirmed COVID-19 infection from May to June 2021. Critical patients who received mechanical ventilation within 24 h after admission and those who started ciclesonide more than 14 days after symptom onset were excluded. The in-hospital mortality rate was compared between those who did and did not receive inhaled ciclesonide. Results A total of 269 patients were enrolled, of whom 184 received inhaled ciclesonide and 85 did not. The use of ciclesonide was associated with lower in-hospital mortality (7.6% vs. 23.5%, p = 0.0003) and a trend of shorter hospital stay (12.0 (10.0–18.0) days vs. 13.0 (10.0–25.3) days, p = 0.0577). IntroductionBody size regulates all biological processes, including growth, reproduction, metabolism, trophic interactions, etc., and is the master trait across organisms, populations, and communities. Despite a rich literature on the impacts of human and natural disturbances on body size, a clear knowledge gap is the effect of the submarine canyons on the benthic size structures in the deep sea, hindering our understanding of the ecological processes of these dominant ecosystems on the continental margin.MethodsTherefore, we conducted repeated sediment sampling to compare meiofauna and macrofauna biomass body-size spectrum, growth, metabolism, and size composition from a high-energy submarine canyon, Gaoping Submarine Canyon (GPSC), and the adjacent continental slope off SW Taiwan. The GPSC is a dynamic ecosystem connected to a high sediment-yield small mountain river subjected to strong internal-tide energy, swift bottom currents, frequent mass wasting events, and high terrestrial sediment inputs.ResultsWe found that the meiofauna and macrofauna were characterized by relatively larger individuals dominating on the slope to smaller ones dominating in the canyon. As a result, the community biomass, secondary production, and respiration were depressed with distinctive biomass-size composition in the canyon compared to the non-canyon slope. The environmental factors related to internal tide disturbance (i.e., bottom current velocity, duration of sediment erosion, or low light transmission) substantially influence the body size composition of the canyon benthos, while food supplies (i.e., TOC and C/N ratio) and sediment characters (i.e., grain size and porosity) correlated closely with the slope communities.DiscussionWe concluded that the disturbed condition in the GPSC may have wiped out or depressed the local benthic assemblages, and only the smaller, more resilient species could persist. Our results also highlight that the alterations of the canyon benthic community could be a reference to deep-sea ecosystems under anthropogenic disturbances or global climate change.

Abstract An incorrect mistake that the DC bias resistance cannot change the oscillation frequency exists for the traditional formula of the Wien‐Bridge oscillator. From the rigorous hardware experiments and theoretical proofs in this study, the proposed new formula exploits the fact that the oscillation frequency of the Wien‐Bridge oscillator is indeed determined by the DC bias resistance. The feedback theory and Barkhausen criterion are often utilised to address the oscillating formula of the Wien‐Bridge oscillator for traditional approaches. However, the steps of the feedback theory are complicated, and its severe shortcoming is the utilisation of Kirchhoff's law. The traditional Barkhausen formula is only necessary but not sufficient for the Wien‐Bridge oscillator. Hence, the oscillator with a feedback device, which fulfils the Barkhausen criterion does not necessarily oscillate at a frequency and then this fact will make the Barkhausen criterion impractical. This study applies our series research Chen's Electric Unifying Approach to overcome the serious shortcomings of the traditional Barkhausen method and yields a necessary and sufficient oscillation formula for the Wien‐Bridge oscillator. Another important feature of our proposed method is that the oscillation condition is effective for a range value, and it can solve the impact caused by the change in environmental factors.

Objective: To report a case and review published cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the ovary. Case report: A 30-year-old female presented with abdominal fullness. Abdominal CT revealed bilateral huge ovarian masses with moderate amount of ascites. Explore laparotomy was performed and the frozen section of right ovarian mass reported to be malignant lymphoma. The final diagnosis was Ann Arbor stage IV diffuse large B cell lymphoma. The patient received six cycles of chemotherapy with RCHOP regimen. She achieved complete remission after the treatment, and there's no evidence of recurrence after 12 months follow up. Conclusion: Ovarian lymphoma is a rare condition. It could present with findings mimicking ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy is the main treatment option and cytoreductive surgery should be avoided.

BackgroundThe aim of our study was to externally validate the predictive capability of five developed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-specific prognostic tools, including the COVID-19 Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), Shang COVID severity score, COVID-intubation risk score-neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (IRS-NLR), inflammation-based score, and ventilation in COVID estimator (VICE) score.MethodsThe medical records of all patients hospitalized for a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis between May 2021 and June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Data were extracted within the first 24 h of admission, and five different scores were calculated. The primary and secondary outcomes were 30-day mortality and mechanical ventilation, respectively.ResultsA total of 285 patients were enrolled in our cohort. Sixty-five patients (22.8%) were intubated with ventilator support, and the 30-day mortality rate was 8.8%. The Shang COVID severity score had the highest numerical area under the receiver operator characteristic (AUC-ROC) (AUC 0.836) curve to predict 30-day mortality, followed by the SEIMC score (AUC 0.807) and VICE score (AUC 0.804). For intubation, both the VICE and COVID-IRS-NLR scores had the highest AUC (AUC 0.82) compared to the inflammation-based score (AUC 0.69). The 30-day mortality increased steadily according to higher Shang COVID severity scores and SEIMC scores. The intubation rate exceeded 50% in the patients stratified by higher VICE scores and COVID-IRS-NLR score quintiles.ConclusionThe discriminative performances of the SEIMC score and Shang COVID severity score are good for predicting the 30-day mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The COVID-IRS-NLR and VICE showed good performance for predicting invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

Abstract We previously reported that perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) causes autophagy-induced apoptosis in renal tubular cells (RTCs) through a mechanism dependent on reactive oxygen species (ROS)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase. This study extended our findings and determined the therapeutic potency of l-Carnitine in PFOS-treated RTCs. l-Carnitine (10 mM) reversed the effects of PFOS (100 µM) on autophagy induction and impaired autophagy flux. Furthermore, it downregulated the protein level of p47Phox, which is partly related to PFOS-induced increased cytosolic ROS in RTCs. Moreover, l-Carnitine reduced ROS production in mitochondria and restored PFOS-impeded mitochondrial function, leading to sustained normal adenosine triphosphate synthesis and oxygen consumption and reduced proton leakage in a Seahorse XF stress test. The increased inositol-requiring enzyme 1α expression by PFOS, which indicated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress activation, was associated with PFOS-mediated autophagy activation that could be attenuated through 4-phenylbutyrate (5 mM, an ER stress inhibitor) and l-Carnitine pretreatment. Therefore, by reducing the level of IRE1α, l-Carnitine reduced the levels of Beclin and LC3BII, consequently reducing the level of apoptotic biomarkers including Bax and cleaving PARP and caspase 3. Collectively, these results indicate that through the elimination of oxidative stress, extracellular signal–regulated kinase activation, and ER stress, l-Carnitine reduced cell autophagy/apoptosis and concomitantly increased cell viability in RTCs. This study clarified the potential mechanism of PFOS-mediated RTC apoptosis and provided a new strategy for using l-Carnitine to prevent and treat PFOS-induced RTC apoptosis.

Rowing competitions require consistent rowing strokes among crew members to achieve optimal performance. However, existing motion analysis techniques often rely on wearable sensors, leading to challenges in sporter inconvenience. The aim of our work is to use a graph-matching network to analyze the similarity in rowers’ rowing posture and further pair rowers to improve the performance of their rowing team. This study proposed a novel video-based performance analysis system to analyze paired rowers using a graph-matching network. The proposed system first detected human joint points, as acquired from the OpenPose system, and then the graph embedding model and graph-matching network model were applied to analyze similarities in rowing postures between paired rowers. When analyzing the postures of the paired rowers, the proposed system detected the same starting point of their rowing postures to achieve more accurate pairing results. Finally, variations in the similarities were displayed using the proposed time-period similarity processing. The experimental results show that the proposed time-period similarity processing of the 2D graph-embedding model (GEM) had the best pairing results.

X-ray detection has widespread applications in medical diagnosis, non-destructive industrial radiography and safety inspection, and especially, medical diagnosis realized by medical X-ray detectors is presenting an increasing demand. Perovskite materials are excellent candidates for high-energy radiation detection based on their promising material properties such as excellent carrier transport capability and high effective atomic number. In this review paper, we introduce X-ray detectors using all kinds of halide perovskite materials along with various crystal structures and discuss their device performance in detail. Single-crystal perovskite was first fabricated as an active material for X-ray detectors, having excellent performance under X-ray illumination due to its superior photoelectric properties of X-ray attenuation with μm thickness. The X-ray detector based on inorganic perovskite shows good environmental stability and high X-ray sensitivity. Owing to anisotropic carrier transport capability, two-dimensional layered perovskites with a preferred orientation parallel to the substrate can effectively suppress the dark current of the device despite poor light response to X-rays, resulting in lower sensitivity for the device. Double perovskite applied for X-ray detectors shows better attenuation of X-rays due to the introduction of high-atomic-numbered elements. Additionally, its stable crystal structure can effectively lower the dark current of X-ray detectors. Environmentally friendly lead-free perovskite exhibits potential application in X-ray detectors by virtue of its high attenuation of X-rays. In the last section, we specifically introduce the up-scaling process technology for fabricating large-area and thick perovskite films for X-ray detectors, which is critical for the commercialization and mass production of perovskite-based X-ray detectors.

Abstract This prospective study aimed at determine whether eye irrigation removes ocular foreign bodies (FBs) and whether ocular pain predicts FBs. Emergency department patients complaining of ocular FBs were enrolled. In the irrigation group (n = 52), pain was evaluated with a visual analog scale before and after irrigation, and the presence of FBs was determined under a slit-lamp. In the nonirrigation group (n = 27), the evaluations were performed upon arrival. The corneal FB retention rate was found significantly lower in the irrigation (13/52, 25%) than in the nonirrigation groups (13/27, 48%; P = 0.04). After irrigation, those without FBs had more patients experiencing pain reduction (67%) compared to those with retained FBs (46%; P = 0.14) and had a greater magnitude of change in pain score (mean ± SD, − 2.6 ± 2.7 vs. − 0.7 ± 1.4; P = 0.02). An improvement in ocular pain score ≥ 5 points after irrigation predicted the absence of FBs with a negative predictive value of 100%. Eye irrigation significantly lowered corneal FB retention; if ocular pain decreased considerably, the probability of retained FBs was low, making irrigation-associated pain score reduction a feasible diagnostic method to exclude FB retention without needing specialized ophthalmic examinations.

Abstract S14 has been identified as a potent stimulator of de novo hepatic lipogenesis (DNL) in rodents. However, it is unclear how S14 is regulated in humans with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum S14 and liver steatosis in humans with NAFLD. A total of 614 participants were recruited from community. Liver steatosis were evaluated according to the Ultrasonographic Fatty Liver Indicator (US-FLI), which is a semi-quantitative liver ultrasound score. Anthropometric and biochemical indices were collected for further analysis. The risk of liver steatosis severity was estimated by a cumulative logistic regression model. NAFLD was found in 52.2% of the participants. The subjects with NAFLD showed higher levels of waist circumference, body mass index, insulin resistance, aspartate aminotransferase, dyslipidemia, visceral fat, serum S14 and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) than those of controls. Compared with the first tertile of serum S14, the odds ratios for the risk of more severe liver steatosis were 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.78–1.92) for those of the second tertile and 2.08 (95% CI: 1.28–3.39) for the third tertile (P for trend

Abstract In this article, based on feedback linearized approach and linear quadratic regulator optimization control approach using particle swarm optimization, the almost disturbance decoupling, input amplitude reduction, tuning parameter optimization, controllable convergence rate, improved suspension and globally exponential stability multi‐performances of highly nonlinear multi‐input multi‐output full‐car uncertain system are simultaneously achieved without applying any nonlinear function approximator including neural network approach and fuzzy logic approach. The article proposes a new method to achieve the optimal control matrices of LQR such that the composite controller can reduce the amplitudes of system control inputs. Determination of the LQR tuning parameters is conventionally determined via trial and error approach. In addition to being very troublesome, it is difficult to find the globally best tuning matrices with LQR method. This study has first proposed the convergence rate formula of the nonlinear system response as the fitness function of LQR approach by using PSO optimization algorithm to take the place of the conventional trial and error method and locally Jacobian linearized approach under the guarantee of globally exponential stability. The simulation results show how the full‐car system can be controlled optimally and satisfactorily and confirm the superiority of the proposed method.

Design of tracking controller for quadrotor is an important issue for many engineering fields such as COVID-19 epidemic prevention, intelligent agriculture, military photography and rescue nowadays. This study applies the feedback linearized method and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to analysis and stabilize the highly nonlinear quadrotor system without applying any nonlinear function approximator that includes neural network approach and fuzzy approach. The article proposes a new method based on the firstly proposed convergence rate formula to achieve the optimal weighting matrices of LQR such that the composite controller can reduce the amplitudes of system control inputs. Determination of the LQR tuning parameters is conventionally achieved via trial and error approach. In addition to being very troublesome, it is difficult to find the globally best tuning matrices with LQR method. This article firstly uses the convergence rate formula of the nonlinear system as the fitness function of LQR approach by using PSO to take the place of the trial and error method. The generalities and implications of proposed approach are globally valid, whereas the Jacobian linearized approach is locally valid due to the Taylor expansion theorem. In addition to these two major achievements, the significant innovation of the proposed method is to possess “simultaneously” additional performances including the almost disturbance decoupling, input amplitude reduction, tuning parameter optimization and globally exponential stability performances. Comparative examples show that the convergence rate with our proposed optimal controller using the PSO algorithm is larger than the fuzzy method, and better than the singular perturbation method with high-gain feedback.

This paper presents a 433 MHz low-power receiver utilizing an N-path filter technique and a self-frequency tracking mechanism. Without the front-end amplifier, the mixer-first architecture can reduce power consumption significantly. A self-adjusted frequency tracking loop (SA-FTL) adjusts local oscillator (LO) frequency to approach input RF frequency automatically, thereby enhancing conversion gain and lowering return loss. The receiver, implemented in a $0.18~\mu \text{m}$ CMOS process, achieves a sensitivity of −80 dBm at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−3 and a data rate of 10 kb/s, while consuming $152~\mu \text{W}$ from a 0.8V voltage supply.

The prevalence and impact of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) Q787Q polymorphism on the treatment of lung adenocarcinoma remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed patients with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma to evaluate the prevalence of the EGFR Q787Q polymorphism and its influence on effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment. A total of 333 patients were included in this study. The prevalence of the EGFR Q787Q polymorphism was 38%, 42%, and 35% in the total patients, EGFR mutation negative, and EGFR mutation positive groups, respectively. The prevalence of EGFR Q787Q polymorphism was significantly higher in EGFR wild-type patients than in the general non-cancerous population from Taiwan Biobank and 1000 Genome Project databases, respectively. EGFR Q787Q polymorphism had significant protective effects on the overall survival of EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma treated with EGFR TKIs (aHR =0.61, p=0.03). Our study demonstrated that EGFR Q787Q polymorphism is a germline variant in the general population. It is a protective predictor of overall survival in patients with stage IV EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma treated with TKIs.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a major public health problem with unclear mechanism and limited therapeutic options. Here the authors show that a fibroblast-enriched endoplasmic reticulum protein, TXNDC5, promotes pulmonary fibrosis by stabilizing TGFBR1 and show the potential of TXNDC5 as a therapeutic target against pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is airway inflammation characterized and low daily physical activity. Most pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) programs are often provided to stable patients, but fewer training programs are specific for hospitalized patients with acute exacerbation (AE). Patients with AECOPD experience increased dyspnea sensations and systemic inflammation during exercise training. High-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) reduces the minute volume, lowers the respiratory rate, and decreases the work of breathing. However, it is not clear whether HFNT is efficient during exercise training. In this study, we investigated the effects of HFNT during exercise training in an early PR program among hospitalized patients with severe AECOPD. Methods We enrolled COPD patients hospitalized due to AE. They were randomized into two groups according to their status into HFNT PR and non-HFNT PR groups. This study collected basic data, and also assessed a pulmonary function test, 6-min walking test, blood inflammatory biomarkers, and arterial gas analysis at the baseline, and at 4 and 12 weeks of the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Result We recruited 44 AECOPD patients who completed the 12-week PR program. The HFNT PR program produced significant improvements in exercise tolerance as assessed by the 6-min walking distance (6MWD), reduced dyspnea sensations in the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC), and decreased systemic inflammation as evidenced by the a lower C-reactive protein (CRP) level. A reduction in the length of hospitalization was achieved with PR in the 1-year follow-up in the two groups. The HFNT PR group showed better trends of reduced air trapping in the delta inspiration capacity (IC) and an increased quality of life according to the COPD assessment test (CAT) than did the non-HFNT PR group. Conclusions HFNT during exercise training in early PR increases exercise tolerance and reduces systemic inflammation in hospitalized patients with severe AECOPD.

In this paper, based on simple quadratic matrix algebra, feedback linearization and neural network methods, the kinematics and almost perturbation decoupling and tracking performances of nonlinear spacecraft attitude control represented by improved Rodriguez parameters are studied. A nonlinear robust attitude controller is proposed to ensure the global stability and the almost disturbance decoupling performance without any learning or adaptation rules used in neural network approach and without having to solve the complex Hamilton-Jacobi equation of H-infinity control approach. This study presents an example that cannot be solved by the first paper on the problem of almost disturbance decoupling, to illustrate the point that this method can easily solve the tracking and almost disturbance decoupling performance. In addition, we propose a novel algorithm and two theorems that design a controller with almost disturbance decoupling and tracking performances. On the basis of meeting the standards we proposed, we successfully carried out some simulations on the spacecraft system to solve the effects of external disturbance torques.

CXCR4 antagonists have been claimed to reduce mortality after myocardial infarction in myocardial infarction (MI) animals, presumably due to suppressing inflammatory responses caused by myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, thus, subsequently facilitating tissue repair and cardiac function recovery. This study aims to determine whether a newly designed CXCR4 antagonist DBPR807 could exert better vascular-protective effects than other clinical counterparts (e.g., AMD3100) to alleviate cardiac damage further exacerbated by reperfusion. Consequently, we find that instead of traditional continuous treatment or multiple-dose treatment at different intervals of time, a single-dose treatment of DBPR807 before reperfusion in MI animals could attenuate inflammation via protecting oxidative stress damage and preserve vascular/capillary density and integrity via mobilizing endothelial progenitor cells, leading to a desirable fibrosis reduction and recovery of cardiac function, as evaluated with the LVEF (left ventricular ejection fraction) in infarcted hearts in rats and mini-pigs, respectively. Thus, it is highly suggested that CXCR4 antagonists should be given at a single high dose prior to reperfusion to provide the maximal cardiac functional improvement. Based on its favorable efficacy and safety profiles indicated in tested animals, DBPR807 has a great potential to serve as an adjunctive medicine for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) therapies in acute MI patients.

Purpose: To report the application of LUXIE and validate its reliability by comparing the test results with those of Humphrey Field Analyzer 3 (HFA3). Methods: In this pilot study, we prospectively recruited participants who had received HFA3 SITA standard 30-2 perimetry and tested them with LUXIE on the same day. LUXIE is a software designed for visual field testing cooperating with HTC Vive Pro Eye, a head-mounted virtual reality device with an eye-tracking system. The test stimuli were synchronized with eye movements captured by the eye-tracking system to eliminate fixation loss. The global, hemifields, quadrants, glaucoma hemifield test (GHT) sectors, and point-by-point retinal sensitivities were compared between LUXIE and HFA3. All participants were asked to fill out a post-test user survey. Results: Thirty-eight participants with 65 eyes were enrolled. LUXIE demonstrated good correlations with HFA3 in global (r = 0.81), superior hemifield (r = 0.77), superonasal, superotemporal, and inferonasal quadrants (r = 0.80, 0.78, 0.80). The user survey showed that participants were more satisfied with LUXIE in operating difficulty, comfortability, time perception, concentration, and overall satisfaction. Conclusions: LUXIE demonstrated good correlations with HFA3. Fixation loss could be eliminated in LUXIE with the eye-tracking system. The application of virtual reality devices such as the HTC Vive Pro Eye makes telemedicine and even home-based self-screening visual field tests possible. Key Messages: 1. Virtual reality perimetry is a developing technology that has the potential in telemedicine, and home self-screening visual field tests. 2. LUXIE demonstrated good correlations with Humphrey Field Analyzer 3 in visual field retinal sensitivities.

An inductive load test circuit was used to measure the switching performance of fieldplated edge-terminated Schottky rectifiers with a reverse breakdown voltage of 760 V (0.1 cm diameter, 7.85 × 10-3cm2 area) and an absolute forward current of 1 A on 8 μm thick epitaxial ß-Ga2O3 drift layers. The recovery characteristics for these vertical geometry ß-Ga2O3 Schottky rectifiers switching from forward current of 1 A to reverse off-state voltage of -300 V showed a recovery time (trr) of 64 ns. There was no significant temperature dependence of trr up to 150 °C.

Endogenous endophthalmitis is an uncommon intraocular infection with potentially devastating consequences on vision. Klebsiella pneumoniae is highly prevalent in East Asian countries, with an increasing incidence recently worldwide. This retrospective study investigates infection sources and antibiotic susceptibilities of K. pneumoniae in patients with endogenous K. pneumoniae endophthalmitis (EKE) in Northern Taiwan. One hundred and fifty-seven patients with EKE were reviewed between January 1996 and April 2019. Pyogenic liver abscess (120/157, 76.4%) was the most common infection source, followed by pneumonia (13, 8.3%), urinary tract infection (7, 4.5%), and intravenous drug use (4, 2.5%). Bilateral involvement was identified in 12.1% (19/157) of patients, especially in patients with pyogenic liver abscess (16/120, 13.3%), pneumonia (2/13, 15.4%), and urinary tract infection (1/7, 14.3%). The antibiotic susceptibility rates were 98.1%, 92.5%, 97.5%, 96.8%, 100%, 99.3%, and 100% for amikacin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, carbapenems, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, respectively. Four extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing multidrug-resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae isolates were identified. In conclusion, pyogenic liver abscess was the major infection source in EKE. In addition, K. pneumoniae was still highly susceptible to ceftazidime and amikacin, and the MDR K. pneumoniae isolates were not common in EKE.

Cognitive decline is one of the primary concerns in the elderly population. Serious games have been used for different purposes related to elderly care, such as physical therapy, cognitive training and mood management. There has been scientific evidence regarding the relationship between cognition and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) through heart rate variability (HRV). This paper explores the changes in the ANS among elderly people of normal and impaired cognition through measured HRV. Forty-eight subjects were classified into two groups: normal cognition (NC) (n = 24) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (n = 24). The subjects went through the following experiment flow: rest for 3 min (Rest 1), play a cognitive aptitude game (Game 1), rest for another 3 min (Rest 2), then play two reaction-time games (Game 2&3). Ten HRV features were extracted from measured electrocardiography (ECG) signals. Based on statistical analysis, there was no significant difference on the HRV between the two groups, but the experiment sessions do have a significant effect. There was no significant interaction between sessions and cognitive status. This implies that the HRV between the two groups have no significant difference, and they will experience similar changes in their HRV regardless of their cognitive status. Based on the game performance, there was a significant difference between the two groups of elderly people. Tree-based pipeline optimization tool (TPOT) was used for generating a machine learning pipeline for classification. Classification accuracy of 68.75% was achieved using HRV features, but higher accuracies of 83.33% and 81.20% were achieved using game performance or both HRV and game performance features, respectively. These results show that HRV has the potential to be used for detection of mild cognition impairment, but game performance can yield better accuracy. Thus, serious games have the potential to be used for assessing cognitive decline among the elderly.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is among the most abundant organic pollutants and is widely distributed in the environment, wildlife, and humans. Its toxic effects and biological hazards are associated with its long elimination half-life in humans. However, how it affects renal tubular cells (RTCs) remains unclear. In this study, PFOS was observed to mediate the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, followed by the activation of the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) pathway, which induced autophagy in RTCs. Although PFOS treatment induced autophagy after 6 h, prolonged treatment (24 h) reduced the autophagic flux by increasing lysosomal membrane permeability (LMP), leading to increased p62 protein accumulation and subsequent apoptosis. The increase in LMP was visualized through increased green fluorescence with acridine orange staining, and this was attenuated by 3-methyladenine, an autophagy inhibitor. N-acetyl cysteine and an inhibitor of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinases (U0126) attenuated autophagy and apoptosis. Taken together, these results indicate that ROS activation and ROS-mediated phosphorylated ERK1/2 activation are essential to activate autophagy, resulting in the apoptosis of PFOS-treated RTCs. Our findings provide insight into the mechanism of PFOS-mediated renal toxicity.

The association between myopia control efficacy in children treated with orthokeratology and corneal epithelial thickness is still unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the corneal epithelial thickness and its association with axial length changes in children treated with orthokeratology. This retrospective cohort study enrolled children aged from 9 to 15 years who had received orthokeratology for myopia control and had been followed up for at least 1 year. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography was performed to generate wide epithelial thickness maps of the patients. Annual axial length changes were calculated from the axial length at 6 months after the initiation of orthokeratology lens wear and at final measurements. Corneal epithelial thickness data were obtained from 24 sectors and a central 2 mm zone of the wide epithelial thickness map. Associations between annual axial length changes and corneal epithelial thickness for each sector/zone of the wide epithelial thickness map, and orthokeratology treatment data were determined by generalized estimating equations. Finally, a total of 83 eyes of 43 patients (mean age 11.2 years) were included in the analysis. The mean annual axial length change was 0.169 mm; when regressing demographic and ortho-k parameters to mean annual axial length changes, age and target power were both negatively associated with them (β = −14.43, p = 0.008; β = −0.26, p = 0.008, respectively). After adjusting for age and target power, the annual axial length changes were positively associated with the corneal epithelium thickness of IT1, I1, SN2, and S2 sectors of the wide epithelial thickness map, and negatively with that of the I3 sector. In conclusion, we identified associations between annual axial length changes and the corneal epithelium thickness of certain sectors in children treated with orthokeratology. This may facilitate the design of orthokeratology lenses with enhanced efficacy for myopia control.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific biomarker of inflammation and may be associated with cardiovascular disease. In recent studies, systemic inflammatory responses have also been observed in cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been developed to replace natural antibodies with polymeric materials that have low cost and high stability and could thus be suitable for use in a home-care system. In this work, a MIP-based electrochemical sensing system for measuring CRP was developed. Such a system can be integrated with microfluidics and electronics for lab-on-a-chip technology. MIP composition was optimized using various imprinting template (CRP peptide) concentrations. Tungsten disulfide (WS2) was doped into the MIPs. Doping not only enhances the electrochemical response accompanying the recognition of the template molecules but also raises the top of the sensing range from 1.0 pg/mL to 1.0 ng/mL of the imprinted peptide. The calibration curve of the WS2-doped peptide-imprinted polymer-coated electrodes in the extended-gate field-effect transistor platform was obtained and used for the measurement of CRP concentration in real human serum.

Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is commonly used to manage focal spasticity in stroke survivors. This study aimed to a perform comprehensive assessment of the effects of BoNT injection. Twelve stroke subjects with spastic hemiplegia (age: 52.0 ± 10.1 year; 5 females) received 100 units of BoNT to the spastic biceps brachii muscles. Clinical, biomechanical, electrophysiological, and neuro-motor assessments were performed one week (wk) before (pre-injection), 3 weeks (wks) after, and 3 months (mons) after BoNT injection. BoNT injection significantly reduced spasticity, muscle strength, reflex torque, and compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude of spastic elbow flexors (all p < 0.05) during the 3-wks visit, and these values return to the pre-injection level during the 3-mons visit. Furthermore, the degree of reflex torque change was negatively correlated to the amount of non-reflex component of elbow flexor resistance torque. However, voluntary force control and non-reflex resistance torque remained unchanged throughout. Our results revealed parallel changes in clinical, neurophysiological and biomechanical assessment after BoNT injection; BoNT injection would be more effective if hypertonia was mainly mediated by underlying neural mechanisms. BoNT did not affect voluntary force control of spastic muscles.

Quantum mechanically guided materials design has been used to predict the mechanical property trends in crystalline materials. Thereby, the identification of composition-structure-property relationships is enabled. However, quantum mechanics based design guidelines and material selection criteria for ultra-strong metallic glasses have been lacking. Hence, based on an ab initio model for metallic glasses in conjunction with an experimental high-throughput methodology geared toward revealing the relationship between chemistry, topology and mechanical properties, we propose principles for the design of tough as well as stiff metallic glasses. The main design notion is that a low fraction of hybridized bonds compared to the overall bonding in a metallic glass can be used as a criterion for the identification of damage-tolerant metallic glass systems. To enhance the stiffness of metallic glasses, the bond energy density must be increased as the bond energy density is the origin of stiffness in metallic glasses. The thermal expansion, which is an important glass-forming identifier, can be predicted based on the Debye-Grüneisen model.

In this study, the authors first develop a direct method used to solve the linear nonhomogeneous time-invariant difference equation with the same number for inputs and outputs. Economic cybernetics is the crystallization for the integration of economics and cybernetics. It analyzes the stability, controllability, and observability of the economic system by establishing a system model and enables people to better understand the characteristics of the economic system and solve economic optimization problems. The economic model generally applies the discrete recurrence difference equation. The significant analytic approach for the difference equation is the z-transformation technique. The z-transformation state of the economic cybernetics state-space difference equation generally is a rational function with the same power for the numerator and the denominator. The proposed approach will take the place of the traditional methods without all annoying procedures involving the long division of some complicated polynomials, the expanded multiplication of many polynomial factors, the differentiation of some complicated polynomials, and the complex derivations of all partial fraction parameters. To highlight the novelty of this research, this study especially applies the proposed theorems originally belonging to engineering to the field of economic applications.

Abstract The authors performed a retrospective and comparative study to compare the efficacy of intravitreal aflibercept and bevacizumab for patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV). The patients with treatment-naïve mCNV received 1 + PRN intravitreal bevacizumab from March 2008 to February 2013, while from March 2013 to July 2016 patients were treated by 1 + PRN intravitreal aflibercept, all with monthly follow-up for 12 months. Primary outcome measures included change in central foveal thickness (CFT) in 1 mm by spectral-domain optic coherence tomography, and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at month 12. Complications after injections were recorded. The intra-group changes in CFT and BCVA were compared with Wilcoxon signed rank test, the between-group difference compared with Wilcoxon rank sum test. Fisher’s exact test was used for categorical comparison between groups. Seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients were collected. There were 42 eyes in bevacizumab group, with mean age of 53.2 ± 5.4 years and 27 female patients of them. The mean BCVA significantly improved from baseline 0.56 ± 0.35 logMAR to 0.35 ± 0.35 logMAR at Month 12 after bevacizumab treatment (p 0.05). There was no significant difference between bevacizumab and aflibercept groups in BCVA and CFT from Month 1 to Month 12 (p > 0.05). Injection number of aflibercept was 2.11 ± 0.41, less than that of bevacizumab (3.23 ± 0.38) during 12-month period (p = 0.01). There were no systemic thromboembolic event, elevated intraocular pressure, retinal detachment, or infectious endophthalmitis following injections in both groups. We concluded that both aflibercept and bevacizumab can effectively treat choroidal neovascularization in high myopes. Intravitreal aflibercept had similar efficacy but less treatment number than bevacizumab for mCNV during 12-month period.

A silver precursor (silver 2-ethylhexanoate) and silver nanoparticles were synthesized and used to prepare a low sintering temperature nano-silver paste (PM03). We optimized the amount of silver 2-ethylhexanoate added and the sintering temperature to obtain the best performance of the nano-silver paste. The relationship between the microstructures and properties of the paste was studied. The addition of silver 2-ethylhexanoate resulted in less porosity, leading to lower resistivity and higher shear strength. Thermal compression of the paste PM03 at 250 °C with 10 MPa pressure for 30 min was found to be the proper condition for copper-to-copper bonding. The resistivity was (3.50 ± 0.02) × 10−7 Ω∙m, and the shear strength was 57.48 MPa.

As the proportion of elderly people continues to grow, so does the concern about age-related cognitive decline. Serious games have been developed for cognitive training or treatment, but measuring the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has not been taken to account. However, cognitive functioning has been known to be heavily influenced by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and ANS activity can be quantified using heart rate variability (HRV). This paper aims to analyze the physiological response in normal elderly people as they play two types of serious games using HRV features from electrocardiography (ECG). A wearable device designed in-house was used to measure ECG, and the data from this device was pre-processed using digital signal processing techniques. Ten HRV features were extracted, including time-domain, nonlinear, and frequency-domain features. The experiment proceeds as follows: rest for three minutes, play a cognitive aptitude game, rest for another three minutes, followed by two reaction time games. Data from thirty older adults (age: 65.9 ± 7.34; male: 15, female: 15) were analyzed. The statistical results show that there was a significant difference in the HRV between the two types of games. From this, it can be concluded that the type of game has a significant effect on the ANS response. This can be further used in designing games for the elderly, either for training or mood management.

Hemophilia A is a bleeding disease caused by loss of coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) function. Although prophylactic FVIII infusion prevents abnormal bleeding, disability and joint damage in hemophilia patients are common. The cost of treatment is among the highest for a single disease, and the adverse effects of repeated infusion are still an issue that has not been addressed. In this study, we established a nonviral gene therapy strategy to treat FVIII knockout (FVIII KO) mice. A novel gene therapy approach was developed using dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine formulated with iron oxide (DPPC-Fe3O4) to carry the B-domain-deleted (BDD)-FVIII plasmid, which was delivered into the FVIII KO mice via tail vein injection. Here, a liver-specific albumin promoter-driven BDD-FVIII plasmid was constructed, and the binding ability of circular DNA was confirmed to be more stable than that of linear DNA when combined with DPPC-Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The FVIII KO mice that received the DPPC-Fe3O4 plasmid complex were assessed by staining the ferric ion of DPPC-Fe3O4 nanoparticles with Prussian blue in liver tissue. The bleeding of the FVIII KO mice was improved in a few weeks, as shown by assessing the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Furthermore, no liver toxicity, thromboses, deaths, or persistent changes after nonviral gene therapy were found, as shown by serum liver indices and histopathology. The results suggest that this novel gene therapy can successfully improve hemostasis disorder in FVIII KO mice and might be a promising approach to treating hemophilia A patients in clinical settings.

Cinnamomum plants (Lauraceae) are a woody species native to South and Southeast Asia forests, and are widely used as food flavors and traditional medicines. This study aims to evaluate the chemical constituents of Cinnamomum osmophloeum ct. linalool leaf oil, and its antidepressant and motor coordination activities and the other behavioral evaluations in a rodent animal model. The major component of leaf oil is linalool, confirmed by GC-MS analysis. Leaf oil would not induce the extra body weight gain compared to the control mice at the examined doses after 6 weeks of oral administration. The present results provide the first evidence for motor coordination and antidepressant effects present in leaf oil. According to hypnotic, locomotor behavioral, and motor coordination evaluations, leaf oil would not cause side effects, including weight gain, drowsiness and a diminishment in the motor functions, at the examined doses. In summary, these results revealed C. osmophloeum ct. linalool leaf essential oil is of high potential as a therapeutic supplement for minor/medium depressive syndromes.

High-strength low-alloy steels (HSLAs) are widely used in the structural body components of many domestic motor vehicles owing to their better mechanical properties and greater resistance. The real production process of HSLA steelmaking can be regarded as a model that builds on the relationship between process parameters and product quality attributes. A surrogate modeling method is used, and the resulting production process model can be applied to predict the optimal manufacturing process parameters. We used different methods in this paper, including linear regression, random forests, support vector regression, multilayer perception, and a simplified VGG model to build such a surrogate model. We then applied three bio-inspired search algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization, the artificial bee colony algorithm, and the firefly algorithm, to search for the optimal controllable manufacturing process parameters. Through experiments on 9000 test samples used for building the surrogate model and 299 test samples for making the optimal process parameter selection, we found that the combination of a simplified VGG model and the firefly algorithm was the most successful at reaching a success rate of 100%—in other words, when the product quality attributes of all test samples satisfy the mechanical requirements of the end products.

For decades, scientists have been trying to solve the problem of dementia, with no cure currently available. Semantic–lexical impairment is well established as the early critical sign of dementia, although there are still gaps in knowledge that must be investigated. In this study, we used fMRI to observe the neural activity of 31 subjects, including 16 HC (Healthy Control) and 15 AD (Alzheimer’s Disease), who participated in the naming task. The neuropsychology profile of HC (Healthy Control) and AD (Alzheimer’s Disease) are discussed in this study. The involvement of FG (Fusiform Gyrus) and IFG (Inferior Frontal Gyrus) shows dominant activation in both of the groups. We observed a decrease in neural activity in the AD group, resulting in semantic deficit problems in this preliminary study. Furthermore, ROI analysis was performed and revealed both hyperactivation and hypoactivation in the AD group. The compensatory mechanism demonstrated during the task, due to the effort required to identify an animal’s name, represents the character profile of AD.

This study assessed the use of astaxanthin as an anticancer agent for increasing inhibition to melanoma cells (A375 and A2058). Wound healing and invasion assays presented that astaxanthin treatment reduced melanoma cell migration in a dose-dependent manner. The effects on melanoma cell migration were conferred via suppressed expressions of matrix metalloproteinases 1, 2 and 9. Dichlorofluorescein diacetate assay further showed that astaxanthin treatment reduced production of cellular reactive oxygen species. Cellular proliferation assay revealed potent dose-dependent inhibiting effects on melanoma cells. One-dimensional flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that astaxanthin induced cell cycle arrest in G1 phase. Mechanisms of apoptosis were verified by double fluorescence staining with annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate and propidium iodide. The antitumor effects of astaxanthin significantly decreased tumor size in a xenograft model. In summary, the experimental results showed that astaxanthin has potent in vivo and in vitro inhibiting effects on melanoma tumor growth for developing as chemotherapeutic agents.

Mobile-phone based visible light communication (VLC) is an attractive method for optical wireless communication. However, the data rate is typically limited by the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor image sensor frame rate and the processing time gap in the rolling shutter mode operation. Here, we propose and demonstrate a packet-reconstruction scheme, known as beacon jointed rolling shutter pattern scheme. The mobile-phone based VLC data rate can be increased to a record 10.32 kb/s. The implementation algorithm is discussed; and the bit-error-rate experimental evaluations at different transmission distances and horizontal offsets are performed.

Cortical and subcortical plastic reorganization occurs in the course of motor recovery after stroke. It is largely accepted that plasticity of ipsilesional motor cortex primarily contributes to recovery of motor function, while the contributions of contralesional motor cortex are not completely understood. As a result of damages to motor cortex and its descending pathways and subsequent unmasking of inhibition, there is evidence of upregulation of reticulospinal tract (RST) excitability in the contralesional side. Both animal studies and human studies with stroke survivors suggest and support the role of RST hyperexcitability in post-stroke spasticity. Findings from animal studies demonstrate the compensatory role of RST hyperexcitability in recovery of motor function. In contrast, RST hyperexcitability appears to be related more to abnormal motor synergy and disordered motor control in stroke survivors. It does not contribute to recovery of normal motor function. Recent animal studies highlight laterality dominance of corticoreticular projections. In particular, there exists upregulation of ipsilateral corticoreticular projections from contralesional premotor cortex (PM) and supplementary motor area (SMA) to medial reticular nuclei. We revisit and revise the previous theoretical framework and propose a unifying account. This account highlights the importance of ipsilateral PM/SMA-cortico-reticulospinal tract hyperexcitability from the contralesional motor cortex as a result of disinhibition after stroke. This account provides a pathophysiological basis for post-stroke spasticity and related movement impairments, such as abnormal motor synergy and disordered motor control. However, further research is needed to examine this pathway in stroke survivors to better understand its potential roles, especially in muscle strength and motor recovery. This account could provide a pathophysiological target for developing neuromodulatory interventions to manage spasticity and thus possibly to facilitate motor recovery.

Spot 14 (S14) protein is primarily expressed in adipogenic tissues. Compared to wild type, S14 knockout mice had better resistance to diet-induced obesity and glucose tolerance. However, the association between serum S14 level and metabolic variables in humans has never been investigated. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the associations between serum S14 concentrations with components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). The phenomenon of exaggerated motor overflow is well documented in stroke survivors with spasticity. However, the mechanism underlying the abnormal motor overflow remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the possible mechanisms behind abnormal motor overflow and its possible relations with post-stroke spasticity. 11 stroke patients (63.6 ± 6.4 yrs; 4 women) and 11 healthy subjects (31.18 ± 6.18 yrs; 2 women) were recruited. All of them were asked to perform unilateral isometric elbow flexion at submaximal levels (10, 30, and 60% of maximum voluntary contraction). Electromyogram (EMG) was measured from the contracting biceps (iBiceps) muscle and resting contralateral biceps (cBiceps), ipsilateral flexor digitorum superficialis (iFDS), and contralateral FDS (cFDS) muscles. Motor overflow was quantified as the normalized EMG of the resting muscles. The severity of motor impairment was quantified through reflex torque (spasticity) and weakness. EMG-EMG coherence was calculated between the contracting muscle and each of the resting muscles. During elbow flexion on the impaired side, stroke subjects exhibited significant higher motor overflow to the iFDS muscle compared with healthy subjects (ipsilateral or intralimb motor overflow). Stroke subjects exhibited significantly higher motor overflow to the contralateral spastic muscles (cBiceps and cFDS) during elbow flexion on the non-impaired side (contralateral or interlimb motor overflow), compared with healthy subjects. Moreover, there was significantly high EMG-EMG coherence in the alpha band (6–12 Hz) between the contracting muscle and all other resting muscles during elbow flexion on the non-impaired side. Our results of diffuse ipsilateral and contralateral motor overflow with EMG-EMG coherence in the alpha band suggest subcortical origins of motor overflow. Furthermore, correlation between contralateral motor overflow to contralateral spastic elbow and finger flexors and their spasticity was consistently at moderate to high levels. A high correlation suggests that diffuse motor overflow to the impaired side and spasticity likely share a common pathophysiological process. Possible mechanisms are discussed.

The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the differences in the reaction time and accuracy rate of three categories of subjects using our serious games. Thirty-seven subjects were divided into three groups: normal (n1 = 16), MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) (n2 = 10), and dementia—moderate-to-severe (n3 = 11) groups based on the MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination). Two serious games were designed: (1) whack-a-mole and (2) hit-the-ball. Two dependent variables, reaction time and accuracy rate, were statistically analyzed to compare elders’ performances in the games among the three groups for three levels of speed: slow, medium, and fast. There were significance differences between the normal group, the MCI group, and the moderate-to-severe dementia group in both the reaction-time and accuracy-rate analyses. We determined that the reaction times of the MCI and dementia groups were shorter compared to those of the normal group, with poorer results also observed in accuracy rate. Therefore, we conclude that our serious games have the feasibility to evaluate reaction performance and could be used in the daily lives of elders followed by clinical treatment in the future.

Spastic muscles are weak muscles. It is known that muscle weakness is linked to poor motor performance. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injections are considered as the first-line treatment for focal spasticity. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively investigate the effects of BoNT injections on force control of spastic biceps brachii muscles in stroke survivors. Ten stroke survivors with spastic hemiplegia (51.7 ± 11.5 yrs; 5 men) who received 100 units of incobotulinumtoxinA or onabotulinumtoxinA to the biceps brachii muscles participated in this study. Spasticity assessment (Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and reflex torque) and muscle strength of elbow flexors, as well as motor performance assessment (force variability of submaximal elbow flexion) were performed within one week before (pre-injection) and 3~4 weeks (3-wk) after BoNT injections. As expected, BoNT injections reduced the MAS score and reflex torque, and elbow flexor strength on the spastic paretic side. However, motor performance remained within similar level before and after injections. There was no change in muscle strength or motor performance on the contralateral arm after BoNT injections. The results of this study provide evidence that BoNT injections can reduce spasticity and muscle strength, while motor performance of the weakened spastic muscle remains unchanged.

Core competency is the basis of promoting a competitive advantage for any organization; this study aims to establish an objective and systematic assessment model for companies to identify their capabilities. This model will not only assist companies in understanding their own capabilities but will also allow them to compare their performance with that of main competitors to strengthen their competitiveness. The analysis process involved a combination of the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, fuzzy linguistic value, and the ideal and anti-ideal concept. An objective and systematic model was first developed, which underwent empirical analysis using data from the top three home delivery companies in Taiwan. It was found that “Basic organizational competencies” and “Special competitive competencies” were the two key categories for the home delivery industry. Moreover, “Service price”, “On-time delivery”, and “Secure delivery” were found to be the three most important capabilities needed for home delivery companies. The results showed that the model is able to effectively assist organizations in constructing or assessing their organizational capabilities; in addition, organizations can adjust their service profiles to adapt to today’s turbulent business environment and rapidly changing consumer demands.

Although large-scale synthesis of layered two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) has been made possible, mechanical exfoliation of layered van der Waals crystal is still indispensable as every new material research starts with exfoliated flakes. However, it is often a tedious task to find the flakes with desired thickness and sizes. We propose a method to determine the thickness of few-layer flakes and facilitate the fast searching of flakes with a specific thickness. By using hyperspectral wild field microscopy to acquire differential reflectance and transmittance spectra, we demonstrate unambiguous recognition of typical TMDCs and their thicknesses based on their excitonic resonance features in a single step. Distinct from Raman spectroscopy or atomic force microscopy, our method is non-destructive to the sample. By knowing the contrast between different layers, we developed an algorithm to automatically search for flakes of desired thickness in situ. We extended this method to measure tin dichalcogenides, such as SnS2 and SnSe2, which are indirect bandgap semiconductors regardless of the thickness. We observed distinct spectroscopic behaviors as compared with typical TMDCs. Layer-dependent excitonic features were manifested. Our method is ideal for automatic non-destructive optical inspection in mass production in the semiconductor industry.
