Attosecond noncollinear four wave mixing spectroscopy with one attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse and two few-cycle near-infrared (NIR) pulses was used to measure the autoionization decay lifetimes of inner valence electronic excitations in neon atoms. After a 43-48 eV XUV photon excites a 2s electron into the 2s2p6[np] Rydberg series, broadband NIR pulses couple the 2s2p6[3p] XUV-bright state to neighboring 2s2p6[3s] and 2s2p6[3d] XUV-dark states. Controllable delays of one or both NIR pulses with respect to the attosecond XUV pulse reveal the temporal evolution of either the dark or bright states, respectively. Experimental lifetimes for the 3s, 3p, and 3d states are measured to be 7 +/- 2 fs, 48 +/- 8 fs, and 427 +/- 40 fs, respectively, with 95% confidence. Accompanying calculations with two independent ab initio theoretical methods, NewStock and ASTRA, verify the findings. The results support the expected trend that the autoionization lifetime should be longer for states that have a smaller penetration in the radial region of the 2s core hole, which in this case is for the higher angular momentum Rydberg orbitals. The underlying theory thus links the lifetime results to electron correlation and provides an assessment of the direct and exchange terms in the autoionization process., 22 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The rapid development of industrialization and urbanization has had a substantial impact on the increasing air pollution in many populated cities around the globe. Intensive research has shown that ambient aerosols, especially the fine particulate matter PM2.5, are highly correlated with human respiratory diseases. It is critical to analyze, forecast, and mitigate PM2.5 concentrations. One of the typical meteorological phenomena seducing PM2.5 concentrations to accumulate is temperature inversion which forms a warm-air cap to blockade the surface pollutants from dissipating. This paper analyzes the meteorological patterns which coincide with temperature inversion and proposes two machine learning classifiers for temperature inversion classification. A separate multivariate regression model is trained for the class with or without manifesting temperature inversion phenomena, in order to improve PM2.5 forecasting performance. We chose Puli township as the studied site, which is a basin city easily trapping PM2.5 concentrations. The experimental results with the dataset spanning from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019 show that the proposed temperature inversion classifiers exhibit satisfactory performance in F1-Score, and the regression models trained from the classified datasets can significantly improve the PM2.5 concentration forecast as compared to the model using a single dataset without considering the temperature inversion factor.

Attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy using an XUV pulse and two noncollinear near-infrared pulses is employed to measure Rydberg wavepacket dynamics resulting from extreme ultraviolet excitation of a 3s electron in atomic argon into a series of autoionizing 3s-1np Rydberg states around 29 eV. The emitted signals from individual Rydberg states exhibit oscillatory structure and persist well beyond the expected lifetimes of the emitting Rydberg states. These results reflect substantial contributions of longer-lived Rydberg states to the four wave mixing emission signals of each individually detected state. A wavepacket decomposition analysis reveals that coherent amplitude transfer occurs predominantly from photoexcited 3s-1(n+1)p states to the observed 3s-1np Rydberg states. The experimental observations are reproduced by time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation simulations using electronic structure and transition moment calculations. The theory highlights that coherent amplitude transfer is driven non-resonantly to the 3s-1np states by the near-infrared light through 3s-1(n+1)s and 3s-1(n-1)d dark states during the four-wave mixing process.

Requirements of compressed sensing techniques targeted at miniaturized hyperspectral satellite applications include lightweight onboard hardware, high-speed sensing, low sampling rate for compressing the massive volume of typical hyperspectral data, and noise robustness for reliable data transmission to the ground station. We achieve all these aims via deep learning, and neural networks resulted from which can be implemented on-chip, thereby allowing light hardware implementation. Our neural networks were trained from small-scaled data, but, even so, the resulting encoder achieves a very low sampling rate and very high speed. Unlike typical network training, the input–output pairs are not square but stripe-like images, partly because compressed acquisition does not allow performing compression after obtaining complete data cube and partly because stripe-like acquisition well matches the popular pushbroom hyperspectral sensing schemes. Even with such hard restriction caused by nontraditional training, the resulting decoder still reconstructs the image with high accuracy. To match the requirement of pushbroom sensing, a lightweight encoder is proposed to compress the stripe-like images immediately. Meanwhile, multiscale feature fusion block (MFB) and aggregation (MFA) modules are proposed to form our decoder for enhancing the feature representation of the compressed acquisitions. Furthermore, we achieve joint spatial/spectral super-resolution (SR) progressively, ensuring accurate hyperspectral reconstruction via a low-rank-driven decoder. The encoder and decoder are trained in an end-to-end manner, where noise robustness is forced during the training stage. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed hyperspectral compressed sensing method, as well as its one-shot transfer learning (OTL)-based extension, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Nonlinear spectroscopies can disentangle spectra that are congested due to inhomogeneous broadening. In conjunction with theoretical calculations, attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy is utilized here to probe the dynamics of autoionizing, inner valence excited Rydberg states of the polyatomic molecule, CO2. This tabletop nonlinear technique employs a short attosecond XUV pulse train and two noncollinear, few-cycle near infrared pulses to generate background-free XUV wave-mixing signals. FWM emission is observed from the n = 5 – 7 states of the Henning sharp ndσ_gRydberg series that converges to the ionic B ̃ (_ ^2)Σ_u^+ state. However, these transient emission signals decay with lifetimes of 33 ± 6 fs, 53 ± 2 fs, and 94 ± 2 fs, respectively, which calculations show are consistent with the lifetimes of the short-lived n = 6 – 8 members of the nsσ_g character Henning diffuse Rydberg series. The oscillator strengths of transitions between states involved in all possible resonant FWM processes are calculated, verifying that the nonlinear spectra are dominated by pathways described by an initial excitation to the diffuse nsσ_g Rydberg series and emission from the sharp ndσ_g Rydberg series. The results substantiate not only that attosecond XUV FWM spectroscopy produces rigorous and meaningful measurements of ultrafast dynamics in polyatomic systems, but also that nonlinear spectroscopic techniques are versatile tools to selectively probe dynamics that are otherwise difficult to access.

In Taiwan, emergency physicians often perform wrist joint reduction and cast immobilization before orthopedic surgeons arrange for surgical management. Prophylactic antibiotics can decrease the risk of wound infection and have been routinely employed in orthopedic surgery. In Taiwan, emergency physicians also regularly perform blood investigations and administer prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection if the patient exhibits leukocytosis. However, pain and pressure also cause leukocytosis, making it difficult to discern if the cause is infection or injury. Therefore, we explored the relationship between Colles' fractures and leukocytosis to determine if antibiotic treatment is necessary for this type of injury.

The frequency of droughts and floods is increasing due to the extreme climate. Therefore, water resource planning, allocation, and disaster prevention have become increasingly important. One of the most important kinds of hydrological data in water resources planning and management is discharge. The general way to measure the water depth and discharge is to use the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), a semi-intrusive instrument. This method would involve many human resources and pose severe hazards by floods and extreme events. In recent years, it has become mainstream to measure hydrological data with nonintrusive methods such as the Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV), which is used to measure the surface velocity of rivers and estimate the discharge. However, the unknown water depth is an obstacle for this technique. In this study, a method combined with LSPIV to estimate the bathymetry was proposed. The experiments combining the LSPIV technique and the continuity equation to obtain the bed elevation were conducted in a 27 m long and 1 m wide flume. The flow conditions in the experiments were ensured to be within uniform and subcritical flow, and thermoplastic rubber particles were used as the tracking particles for the velocity measurement. The two-dimensional bathymetry was estimated from the depth-averaged velocity and the continuity equation with the leapfrog scheme in a predefined grid under the constraints of Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL). The LSPIV results were verified using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) measurements, and the bed elevation data of this study were verified using conventional point gauge measurements. The results indicate that the proposed method effectively estimated the variation of the bed elevation, especially in the shallow water level, with an average accuracy of 90.8%. The experimental results also showed that it is feasible to combine the nonintrusive imaging technique with the numerical calculation in solving the water depth and bed elevation.

Background This work aims to help develop new protein engineering techniques based on a structural rearrangement phenomenon called circular permutation (CP), equivalent to connecting the native termini of a protein followed by creating new termini at another site. Although CP has been applied in many fields, its implementation is still costly because of inevitable trials and errors. Results Here we present CirPred, a structure modeling and termini linker design method for circularly permuted proteins. Compared with state-of-the-art protein structure modeling methods, CirPred is the only one fully capable of both circularly-permuted modeling and traditional co-linear modeling. CirPred performs well when the permutant shares low sequence identity with the native protein and even when the permutant adopts a different conformation from the native protein because of three-dimensional (3D) domain swapping. Linker redesign experiments demonstrated that the linker design algorithm of CirPred achieved subangstrom accuracy. Conclusions The CirPred system is capable of (1) predicting the structure of circular permutants, (2) designing termini linkers, (3) performing traditional co-linear protein structure modeling, and (4) identifying the CP-induced occurrence of 3D domain swapping. NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is a multifactorial liver disease related to multiple causes or unhealthy conditions, including obesity and chronic inflammation. The accumulation of excess triglycerides, called steatosis, is known as a hallmark of an imbalance between the rates of hepatic fatty acid uptake/synthesis and oxidation/export. Furthermore, occurrence of NAFLD may lead to a cocktail of disease consequences caused by the altered metabolism of glucose, lipids, and lipoproteins, for instance, insulin resistance, type II diabetes, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, and even hepatocarcinogenesis. Due to the complexity of the occurrence of NAFLD, a multi-targeting strategy is highly recommended to effectively address the issue and combat the causal loop. Ethanol extracts of legumes are popular supplements due to their richness and diversity in phytochemicals, especially isoflavones and anthocyanins. Although many of them have been reported to have efficacy in the treatment of different metabolic syndromes and obesity, there have not been many studies on them as a supplemental mixture. In this study, the alleviative effects of selected legume ethanol extracts (CrE) on high-fat-diet- and fructose-induced obesity, liver steatosis, and hyperglycemia are discussed. As revealed by the findings, CrE not only ameliorated obesity in terms of weight gained and enlargement of adipose tissue, but also significantly reduced the incidence of steatosis via phosphorylation of AMPK, resulting in inhibition of the downstream SREBP-1c/FAS pathway and an increase in an indicator of β-oxidation (carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1a, CPT1A). Furthermore, CrE dramatically alleviated inflammatory responses, including both plasma and hepatic TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 levels. CrE also had attenuating effects on hyperglycemia and insulin resistance and significantly reduced the fasting glucose level, fasting insulin level, and plasma leptin, and it exhibited positive effects in the Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). At the molecular level, CrE could activate the PI3K/Akt/Glut2 pathway, which indicated an increase in insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake. Taken together, these results suggest that ethanol extracts of legumes could be potential supplements for metabolic syndromes, and their efficacy and effectiveness might facilitate the multi-targeting strategy required to mitigate NAFLD.

Unlike RGB images available almost everywhere, hyperspectral remote sensing images are not easily obtainable, making big data collection often infeasible for a target task. This would prevent the adoption of the powerful deep learning technology from being applied in solving some challenging problems, e.g., recovering the missing part of a hyperspectral data cube (viewed as a 3-way tensor). This fact induces a series of research works to investigate how to augment the small data, for example, by rotation. We just accept the fact that only small data is available, and propose a radically different view (without augmentation) to address the lacking of big data in hyperspectral remote sensing. Specifically, we show that a deep neural network trained using just small data can still output some useful information to be used in designing regularizer for the ill-posed hyperspectral tensor completion (HTC) problem. Such regularizer is made simple and convex, thereby allowing us to design a fast convex optimization based HTC algorithm, whose superiority is experimentally demonstrated.

Protein secondary structure prediction (SSP) has a variety of applications; however, there has been relatively limited improvement in accuracy for years. With a vision of moving forward all related fields, we aimed to make a fundamental advance in SSP. There have been many admirable efforts made to improve the machine learning algorithm for SSP. This work thus took a step back by manipulating the input features. A secondary structure element-based position-specific scoring matrix (SSE-PSSM) is proposed, based on which a new set of machine learning features can be established. The feasibility of this new PSSM was evaluated by rigid independent tests with training and testing datasets sharing http://10.life.nctu.edu.tw/SSE-PSSM.

Nonlinear wave mixing in solids with ultrafast x-rays can provide insight into complex electronic dynamics of materials. Here, tabletop-based attosecond noncollinear four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy using one extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse from high harmonic generation and two separately timed few-cycle near-infrared (NIR) pulses characterizes the dynamics of the ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+}$ ${L}_{2,3}$ edge core-excitons in NaCl around 33.5 eV. An inhomogeneous distribution of core-excitons underlying the well-known doublet absorption of the ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+}$ $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point core-exciton spectrum is deconvoluted by the resonance-enhanced nonlinear wave mixing spectroscopy. In addition, other dark excitonic states that are coupled to the XUV-allowed levels by the NIR pulses are characterized spectrally and temporally. Approximately $l10\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{fs}$ coherence lifetimes of the core-exciton states are observed. The core-excitonic properties are discussed in the context of strong electron-hole exchange interactions, electron-electron correlation, and electron-phonon broadening. This investigation successfully indicates that tabletop attosecond FWM spectroscopies represent a viable technique for time-resolved solid state measurements.

Multiple Rydberg series converging to the O2+c4Σ-u state, accessed by 20-25 eV extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light, serve as important model systems for the competition between nuclear dissociation and electronic autoionization. The dynamics of the lowest member of these series, the 3sσg state around 21 eV, has been challenging to study owing to its ultra-short lifetime (10 fs). Here, we apply transient wave-mixing spectroscopy with an attosecond XUV pulse to investigate the decay dynamics of this electronic state. Lifetimes of 5.8 ± 0.5 fs and 4.5 ± 0.7 fs at 95% confidence intervals are obtained for v = 0 and v = 1 vibrational levels of the 3s Rydberg state, respectively. A theoretical treatment of predissociation and electronic autoionization finds that these lifetimes are dominated by electronic autoionization. The strong dependence of the electronic autoionization rate on the internuclear distance because of two ionic decay channels that cross the 3s Rydberg state results in the different lifetimes of the two vibrational levels. The calculated lifetimes are highly sensitive to the location of the 3s potential with respect to the decay channels; by slight adjustment of the location, values of 6.2 and 5.0 fs are obtained computationally for the v = 0 and v = 1 levels, respectively, in good agreement with experiment. Overall, an intriguing picture of the coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics is revealed by attosecond XUV wave-mixing spectroscopy, indicating that the decay dynamics are not a simple competition between isolated autoionization and predissociation processes.

A rail-gap switch with a multistep triggering system was developed. The rail-gap switch consisted of two rail-like electrodes and a knife-edge electrode parallel to each other. It was assembled from many pieces and filled with unpressurized-flowing dry air. Good alignments between all electrodes were achieved by using a special jig and the knife-edge electrode as the spatial reference. Furthermore, to trigger the rail-gap switch, a multistep triggering system was used. The triggering system consisted of three components: an optical trigger-pulse generator, a slow high-voltage trigger-pulse generator using an ignition coil for a car, and finally, a fast high-voltage trigger-pulse generator using a three-stage Marx generator. The triggering system generated a negative high-voltage trigger pulse of less than -40 kV with a falling speed of -6.6 ± 0.4 kV/ns. The falling speed was fast enough to initiate multichannel discharges in the rail-gap switch. Finally, the rail-gap switch was tested using a test bench consisting of a 0.5-μF capacitor bank charged to 20 kV. The rail-gap switch was triggered by the multistep triggering system robustly with a delay of 180 ns. The delay between the time, when the peak current of the test bench occurred, and the trigger pulse was 890 ns with a jitter of 20 ns, i.e., ∼2% uncertainty in time. The inductance of the rail-gap switch was ∼80 nH obtained from the discharge tests. The rail-gap switch with the multistep high-voltage triggering system is suitable for any pulsed-power systems with current rise times in the order of 1 µs.

Directly transmitting the huge amount of typical hyperspectral data acquired on satellite to the ground station is inefficient. This paper proposes a new compressed sensing strategy for hyperspectral imagery on spaceborne sensors systems. As the onboard computing/storage resources are limited, e.g., on CubeSat, the measurement strategy should be computationally very light. Furthermore, considering the limited communication bandwidth, a very low sampling rate is desired. Our encoder accounts for these requirements by separately recording the spatial details and the spectral information, both of which essentially require only simple averaging operators. Our measurement strategy naturally induces a reconstruction criterion that can be elegantly interpreted as a well-known fusion problem in satellite remote sensing, allowing the adoption of a convex optimization method for simple and fast decoding. Our method, termed spatial/spectral compressed encoder (SPACE), is experimentally evaluated on real hyperspectral data, showing superior efficacy in terms of both sampling rate and reconstruction accuracy.

Phototriggered drug delivery systems (PTDDSs) facilitate controlled delivery of drugs loaded on photoactive platform to the target region under light stimulation. The present study investigated the synthesis and efficacy of carbazole–coumarin (CC)-fused heterocycles as a PTDDS platform for the photocontrolled release of a chemotherapeutic agent, chlorambucil, in an in vitro model of human breast and leukemia cancer cells. CC-fused heterocycles were constructed using 4-hydroxycarbazole as the starting material, and further modification of these heterocycles yielded two CC derivatives. CC-7 with an additional − COOH group and CC-8 with the triphenylphosphonium (TPP) group, a mitochondria-targeting ligand introduced in the carbazole ring, dissolved in polar solvents and exhibited emission bands at 360 and 450 nm, respectively. The results indicate that visible light of 405 nm triggers the photolysis of the CC–drug conjugate and efficiently delivers the drug in both in vitro cancer cell models. Cytotoxicity evaluation indicates the suppression of proliferation of both types of cells treated with CC-8 under synergy effect combining drug potency and photosensitization. Further, the lower IC50 of CC-8 toward leukemia cells suggests the efficacy of the TPP ligand in increasing the bioavailability of CC–drug conjugates in leukemia treatment. Studies on mitochondria-targeting drug delivery systems are required for improving the performance of anticancer drugs.

Hepatic fibrosis was caused by a number of signaling pathways that damage liver integrity. We have previously shown that microRNA-29a (miR-29a) protects against liver fibrosis. Aberrant endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and autophagy function reportedly exaggerate hepatic disorders. The aim of this study was to characterize the biological influence of miR-29a on ER function in injured livers with bile duct ligation (BDL). We performed BDL on miR-29a transgenic mice (miR-29aTg) and wild-type mice to induce cholestatic liver injury. Rat T6 cells were transfected with miR-29a mimic and tunicamycin. Compared to the wild-type mice, the BDL deterioration of liver function in terms of total bilirubin, alanine transaminase, and aspartate transaminase activity in the miR-29aTg mice was significantly reduced. Affected livers in the miR-29aTg mice demonstrated a slight fibrotic matrix formation. miR-29a over-expression reduced the BDL disturbance of the expressions of inositol-requiring kinase 1alpha, double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase, spliced-X-box binding protein 1 (sXBP1), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), ULK, LC3BII, p62, and cleaved caspase-8, 9 and 3. In vitro, T6 cells exposed to tunicamycin by increasing abundances of CHOP, sXBP1, cleaved caspase-3, and LC3BII were diminished in the cell cultures transfected with the miR-29a mimic. On the other hand, we observed that miR-29a signaling protected liver tissues from BDL-mediated metabolic dysfunction and excessive fibrosis histopathology. This study provides new molecular insight into the miR-29a stabilization of ER integrity that slows the progression of cholestatic liver deterioration. Impact statement Long-term hepatic damage caused by hepatitis and cholestasis can accelerate fibrosis matrix over-production, which is a harmful process attributed to the dysregulation of a number of cellular and molecular events. The purpose of this study is to characterize the biological influence of miR-29a on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function in bile duct ligation (BDL)-injured livers. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first demonstration that miR-29a over-expression diminishes BDL provocation of ER stress (unfolded protein response, UPR) effector protein expression. This work also demonstrates that miR-29a decreased caspases protein expression in cholestatic livers, while an increase in miR-29a function reduced sXBP1 and CHOP expressions in T6 cells in mice. Analyses of this study highlight that controlling miR-29a signaling can serve as an innovative strategy in the future for microRNA regulation of ER homeostasis to combat cholestasis induction hepatic disorders.

We report the growth of a high-quality Bi 2 Te 3 thin film on an Al 2 O 3 substrate using physical vapor deposition. Using a carefully selected temperature gradient between two separately controllable heaters inside a furnace, an unstrained Bi 2 Te 3 thin film with c -axis orientation and domains bonded by van der Waals epitaxy is formed, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The stoichiometry of the film determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the film has only slight surface oxidation and few contaminants, and the estimated ratio of the atomic densities of bismuth and tellurium is 1.49. A relatively low carrier concentration of 4.83 × 10 18 cm −3 and electron mobility of 192.4 cm 2 /Vs at 3 K allow clear observation of the weak anti-localization effect. Using a traditional two-dimensional (2D) localization analysis with the original Hikami–Larkin–Nagaoka equation, we find clear evidence for the existence of topological surface states, and the temperature dependence of the phase coherence length exhibits 2D material behavior. Pronounced linear magnetoresistance at medium and high fields, which shows the interplay between three characteristic lengths, is also analyzed.

We investigate resonance energy transfer (RET) between a donor-acceptor pair above a gold surface (including bulk and thin-film systems) and explore the distance/frequency dependence of RET enhancements using the theory we developed previously. The mechanism of RET above a gold surface can be attributed to the effects of mirror dipoles, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), and retardation. To clarify these effects on RET, we analyze the enhancements of RET by the mirror method, the decomposition of s- and p-polarization, and the SPP dispersion of charge-symmetric and charge-antisymmetric modes. We find a characteristic distance (approximately 1/10 of the wavelength) that can be used to classify the dominant effect on RET. Moreover, the characteristic distance can be shortened by narrowing the thickness of the thin-film systems, indicating that SPPs can enhance the rate of RET at a short range. The charge-symmetric and charge-antisymmetric modes of the thin films also allow us to engineer the maximum RET enhancement. We hope that our analysis inspires further investigation into the mechanism of RET coupled with SPPs and its applications.
