This report summarizes our work at the Naval Weapons Center developing improved polymeric binders for energetic materials during Fiscal Year 1987., Prepared in cooperation with Aerojet Solid Propulsion Co., Sacramento, CA. Sponsored in part by the Strategic Defense Initiative Office/IST.

A technique for preparing high density, mechanically strong explosive pellets without any binder is described. It involves pressing under high pressure (51.6 MPa) and the use of acetone as a solvating liquid. For cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), the pellet density obtained is 98% of the theoretical density of the pure crystals. Pellets of cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) can also be prepared the same way. The residual acetone in the pellet is negligible for most applications. The procedure is a batch operation with pressing time 2-10 minutes. (Author)

A stripline board material of hollow glass microspheres chemically bonded to a coating material and physically held in a polymeric matrix, preferably homo- or copolymers of ethylene, propylene and/or styrene. The coating material is a difunctional silane with one functional group bound to the glass and the other bound either to the matrix or to a copolymer of a structure similar to the structure of the matrix. In the latter case, the sphere-silane-copolymer forms an intimate mixture with the matrix. (Author), Supersedes PAT-APPL-700 279-76, AD-D002 888.
