Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of kombucha on the surface of composite resins and to examine the degradation-inhibiting effect of adding calcium to kombucha. Methods: Six experimental groups were established, with three types of liquid kombucha: one with 3% added calcium, carbonated water as a positive control, and mineral water as a negative control. The pH and titratable acidity values of the experimental groups were measured. The samples were filled with condensed composite resin and placed in the experimental drinks for 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The Vickers microhardness of the surface was measured before and after immersion, and the changes were compared. Results: The pH values of the experimental group were I’m alive (2.87±0.02), Hollys (2.95±0.01), Ediya (2.99±0.01), I’m alive +3% Ca (4.09±0.01), carbonated water (4.66±0.01), and mineral water (7.67±0.02). I’m alive (–12.35) showed the largest reduction in surface hardness, followed by Hollys (–9.78), carbonated water (–7.97), I’m alive +3% Ca (–7.82), Ediya (–7.60), and mineral water (–1.56). In the Vickers microhardness measurements, all experimental groups, except for the mineral water group, showed significant differences (p＜0.05). The scanning electron microscope results showed that the experimental group and positive control had rough surfaces and micropores. Conclusion: The surface hardness was significantly reduced in all experimental groups except for water. In particular, in the case of kombucha with low pH, the reduction rate increased, weakening the physical properties of the material. In addition, the reduction rate of surface hardness was lower in kombucha with added calcium, and it is believed that drinking kombucha containing calcium can minimize the erosion of dental materials.

Prostate cancer accounts for 14% of male cancer-related fatalities in the UK. Given the challenges associated with hormone-based therapies in the context of androgen-independent prostate cancer, there is an imperative need for research into anticancer drugs. N0821, a peptide belonging to the Trp-Arg dense region and derived from the homologous region of various bee species, shows substantial potential for an anticancer effect. Both MTT assays and 3D spheroid assays were conducted to substantiate its antiproliferation potential and strongly indicated the antiproliferation effect of N0820 (WWWWRWWRKI) and N0821 (YWWWWRWWRKI). Notably, the mechanism underlying this effect is related to the downregulation of CCNA2 and the upregulation of CCNE1. Cell cycle arrest results from the reduction of CCNA2 in the S/G2 phase, leading to the accumulation of CCNE1. Our peptides were predicted to make an α-helix structure. This can act as an ion channel in the cell membrane. Therefore, we analyzed genes implicated in the influx of calcium ions into the mitochondria. Trp-Arg dense-region peptides are known for their antibacterial properties in targeting cell membranes, making the development of resistance less likely. Hence, further research in this area is essential and promising.

Objective: To examine the inhibitory effect of Hydrangea serrata extract against hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells and its underlying mechanisms. Methods: The effects of Hydrangea serrata extract on growth inhibition of tumor cells and spheroids were assessed using MTT and 3D culture assays. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analyses were employed to investigate the changes in mRNA and protein expression levels of molecules related to cell cycle and apoptosis. Results: Hydrangea serrata extract effectively inhibited the growth of both tumor cells and spheroids. The extract also significantly upregulated p27 mRNA expression and downregulated CDK2 mRNA expression, leading to cell cycle arrest. Moreover, increased BAX/Bcl-2 ratio as well as caspase-9 and - 3 were observed after treatment with Hydrangea serrata extract, indicating the induction of tumor cell apoptosis. Conclusions: Hydrangea serrata extract has the potential to alleviate tumors by effectively modulating cell-cycle-related gene expressions and inducing apoptosis, thereby inhibiting tumor growth.

Abstract Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease where various systemic features are involved in the progression of the disease. Based on initial systemic profiles in electronic medical records, this study aimed to develop a model predicting factors of long-term rapid retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning over 5 years in 505 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Eyes with faster or slower RNFL thinning were stratified using a decision tree model, and systemic and ophthalmic data were incorporated into the models based on random forest and permutation methods, with the models interpreted by Shapley additive explanation plots (SHAP). According to the decision tree, a higher lymphocyte ratio (> 34.65%) was the most important systemic variable discriminating faster or slower RNFL thinning. With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, there have been attempts to utilize AI in the field of linguistics. In this context, research and development in AI-based Chinese character recognition technology has spanned 40 years, with its outcomes attracting significant attention. However, in the field of Chinese character recognition, the research into offline handwritten recognition technology is particularly challenging due to the unique characteristics of handwritten Chinese characters. The main issue in current research is the significant decrease in accuracy for characters composed of similar components or characters with similar overall shapes. The focus of research solutions has been on modern mechanical programming and other engineering aspects, while research that integrates the inherent characteristics of Chinese characters themselves has been relatively overlooked. The author believes that combining engineering technology research with a deeper understanding of the nature of Chinese characters can solve many of the current problems. This paper reviews the current state of related domestic and international research to identify areas with significant potential for improvement and progress in research, and finally proposes directions for future research.

Background: This study tries to compare and analyze the removal effect of dental plaque of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice and quantify the results to provide basic data so that consumers can make reasonable choices when purchasing dentifrice, and also increase interest in the dental plaque.Methods: After forming a dental plaque (carbohydrate porridge) on the labial surface of the bovine teeth, a disclosing agent was applied. Then the same experimenter brushed the surface of the bovine teeth using an electric toothbrush and took photographs using a DSLR camera. Thereafter, the residual amount of dental plaque was analyzed using the ImageJ program, and SPSS 26.0 was used for statistical processing.Results: The average residual amount of dental plaque using the general dentifrice was 11.71% for Perio, 9.45% for Cliden, and 8.47% for 2080, and the average residual amount for the three types was approximately 9.88%. The average residual amount of dental plaque of pregnant women’s dentifrice was 13.95% for Jeninmothers, 12.53% for Tntnmoms, and 12.63% for Mommiracle, and the average residual amount of the three types was approximately 13.04%. On comparing the average residual amount of dental plaque between general and pregnant women’s dentifrices, it was observed to be 3.16% higher for the latter. However, the results were not statistically significant.Conclusion: According to the research results, there was no significant difference in removal effects of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice. In addition, when a pregnant woman uses the right toothbrushing method with pregnant women’s dentifrice, it can prevent or inhibit the progression of the gestational periodontal disease. Therefore, we recommend pregnant women to use pregnant women’s dentifrices.

Both defensin and inflammation are part of the human innate immune system that responds rapidly to pathogens. The combination of defensins with pro- or anti-inflammatory effects can be a potential research direction for the treatment of infection by pathogens. This study aimed to identify whether MSF (Miracle Synergy material made using Filipendula glaberrima), a probiotic lysate of Filipendula glaberrima extracts fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K8, activates the expression of human β-defensin (HBD2 and HBD3) to protect the host against pathogens and inhibit inflammation caused by S. aureus, in vitro with Western blot analysis, qRT-PCR and in vivo studies with a mouse model were used to evaluate the effects of MSF. The MSF treatment induced HBD2 and HBD3 expression via the p38 and NF-κB pathways. Furthermore, MSF treatment significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8), also through p38 and NF-κB in S. aureus-induced inflammatory condition. MSF treatment remarkably reduced erythema in mice ears caused by the injection of S. aureus, while K8 lysate treatment did not initiate a strong recovery. Taken together, MSF induced the expression of HBD2 and HDB3 and activated anti-inflammatory activity more than the probiotic lysates of L. plantarum K8. These findings show that MSF is a potential defensin inducer and anti-inflammatory agent.

The 5G networks aim to realize a massive Internet of Things (IoT) environment with low latency. IoT devices with weak security can cause Tbps-level Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on 5G mobile networks. Therefore, interest in automatic network intrusion detection using machine learning (ML) technology in 5G networks is increasing. ML-based DDoS attack detection in a 5G environment should provide ultra-low latency. To this end, utilizing a feature-selection process that reduces computational complexity and improves performance by identifying features important for learning in large datasets is possible. Existing ML-based DDoS detection technology mostly focuses on DDoS detection learning models on the wired Internet. In addition, studies on feature engineering related to 5G traffic are relatively insufficient. Therefore, this study performed feature selection experiments to reduce the time complexity of detecting and analyzing large-capacity DDoS attacks in real time based on ML in a 5G core network environment. The results of the experiment showed that the performance was maintained and improved when the feature selection process was used. In particular, as the size of the dataset increased, the difference in time complexity increased rapidly. The experiments show that the real-time detection of large-scale DDoS attacks in 5G core networks is possible using the feature selection process. This demonstrates the importance of the feature selection process for removing noisy features before training and detection. As this study conducted a feature study to detect network traffic passing through the 5G core with low latency using ML, it is expected to contribute to improving the performance of the 5G network DDoS attack automation detection technology using AI technology.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disease that is the most common cause of dementia. The incidence of AD is rapidly rising because of the aging of the world population. Because AD is presently incurable, early diagnosis is very important. The disease is characterized by pathological changes such as deposition of senile plaques and decreased concentration of the amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) peptide in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The concentration of Aβ42 in the CSF is a well-studied AD biomarker. The specific peptide probe was screened through four rounds of biopanning, which included the phage display process. The screened peptide showed strong binding affinity in the micromolar range, and the enzyme-linked peptide assay was optimized using the peptide we developed. This diagnostic method showed specificity toward Aβ42 in the presence of other proteins. The peptide-binding site was also estimated using molecular docking analysis. Finally, the diagnostic method we developed could significantly distinguish patients who were classified based on amyloid PET images.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder characterized by postural or kinetic tremor. We aimed to evaluate median nerve enlargement in patients with ET using ultrasonography (USG). Thirty-eight hands from 19 patients with ET and 24 hands from 13 controls underwent nerve conduction studies (NCS) and USG at the wrist. The efficacy of an in-package microbial inactivation method, combining H2O2 and atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge cold plasma (ADCP) treatments (H2O2-ADCP), in reducing contamination of Brassica oleracea (cabbage) slices was investigated. Cabbage slices were placed in a polyethylene terephthalate container with a H2O2-soaked polypropylene pad attached to the inside of the lid, followed by subjecting the closed container to ADCP treatment. The H2O2-ADCP treatment inactivated Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes, resulting in reductions of 1.8 and 2.0 log CFU/g, respectively, which were greater than the sum of the inactivation effects observed with each individual treatment. The combined treatment decreased the count of Bacillus cereus spores and indigenous bacteria by 1.0 log spores/g and 1.3 log CFU/g, respectively. Moreover, the in-package method did not alter the moisture content or texture of cabbage slices. We aimed to evaluate the clinical features of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and risk factors for severe RSV disease among Korean children in 2022/2023. A total of 235 children were identified, and 84.3% were hospitalized. Patients under 3 months and 2 years of age accounted for 20.9% and 54.5%, respectively. Pneumonia was diagnosed in 40.9% of children and bronchiolitis in 23.8%. Respiratory support and intensive care were required in 43.4% and 7.7% of patients, respectively. Haemophilus influenzae nasopharyngeal colonization and the presence of underlying disease showed a significant correlation with severity indicators. The clinical impact of RSV infection was high on infants and toddlers, even those having no underlying disease or not being indicated for palivizumab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soy protein isolate (SPI) has garnered researchers' attention due to its abundance, costeffectiveness, excellent biocompatibility, hemo-compatibility, and biodegradability. However, SPI faces limitations in application due to poor processability and weak mechanical strength. Substantial efforts have been made to address these challenges. In this preliminary study, glycerol and biofibers were added to SPI to improve the mechanical properties and film forming, and glyoxal was employed to crosslink SPI molecules. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting SPI/composite films were evaluated. A 15% addition of glycerol proved sufficient for good film formation. Among the biofibers, short SF microfibers were the most effective in enhancing breaking strength, while TEMPO-oxidized CNF (cellulose nanofiber) excelled among CNFs. Crosslinking with glyoxal significantly enhanced the mechanical properties, with the type of biofiber minimally affecting the mechanical properties of the crosslinked SPI composite films. In this study, the structural characteristics of sericin recovered from wastewater released from the silk textile industry (Plant sericin) were comparatively analyzed with those of sericin extracted from a silkworm cocoon produced in a laboratory (Lab sericin). To prepare Plant sericin, ethanol was added to wastewater (i.e., a sericin aqueous solution) after the degumming process to remove nonprotein materials, affording a sericin precipitate. To prepare Lab sericin, nonprotein materials were removed from a silkworm cocoon and sericin was subsequently extracted from the cocoon. Lab sericin and Plant sericin exhibited similar solution viscosities, gel strengths, and crystallinity indices, indicative of the similar molecular weights (MWs) of the two sericin samples. In the case of sericin powder, Plant sericin was more crystalline than Lab sericin due to its treatment with ethanol. The findings of this study revealed that sericin recovered from industrial wastewater can be used equally as its MW is similar to that of sericin obtained through laboratory-scale extraction.
