Objective: Dementia is an important disease burden among the elderly, and its occurrence may be profoundly affected by environmental factors. Evidence of the relationship between air pollution and dementia is emerging, but the extent to which this can be offset by lifestyle factors remains ambiguous. Methods: This study comprised 155,828 elder adults aged 60 years and above in the UK Biobank who were dementia-free at baseline. Cox proportional hazard models were conducted to examine the associations of annual average levels of air pollutants in 2010, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10, and PMcoarse) and lifestyle factors recorded at baseline [physical activity (PA), sleep patterns, or smoking status] with incident risk of dementia, and their interactions on both multiplicative and additive scales. Results: During a 12-year period of follow-up, 4,389 incidents of all-cause dementia were identified. For each standard deviation increase in ambient NO2, NOX or PM2.5, all-cause dementia risk increases by 1.07-fold [hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.07 (1.04, 1.10)], 1.05-fold (95 % CI: 1.02, 1.08) and 1.07-fold (95 % CI: 1.04, 1.10), whereas low levels of PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking are associated with an elevated risk of dementia [HR (95 % CI) = 1.17 (1.09, 1.26), 1.13 (1.00, 1.27), and 1.14 (1.07, 1.21), respectively]. Furthermore, these air pollutants show joint effects with low PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking on the onset of dementia. The moderate to high levels of PA could significantly or marginally significantly modify the associations between NO2, NOX or PM2.5 (P-int = 0.067, 0.036, and 0.067, respectively) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but no significant modification effects are found for sleep patterns or smoking status. Conclusion: The increased exposures of NO2, NOX, or PM2.5 are associated with elevated risk of dementia among elderly UK Biobank population. These air pollutants take joint effects with low PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking on the development of dementia. In addition, moderate to high levels of PA could attenuate the incident risk of AD caused by air pollution. Further prospective researches among other cohort populations are warranted to validate these findings.

Epidemiologic studies have reported the positive relationship of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) exposure with the risk of lung cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying the relationship is still unclear. Plasma microRNA (miRNA) is a typical epigenetic biomarker that was linked to environment exposure and lung cancer development. We aimed to reveal the mediation effect of plasma miRNAs on BaP-related lung cancer. We designed a lung cancer case-control study including 136 lung cancer patients and 136 controls, and measured the adducts of benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide-albumin (BPDE-Alb) and sequenced miRNA profiles in plasma. The relationships between BPDE-Alb adducts, normalized miRNA levels and the risk of lung cancer were assessed by linear regression models. The mediation effects of miRNAs on BaP-related lung cancer were investigated. Abstract Objective This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing Procalcitonin (PCT) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with high fever and suspected intracranial infection after neurosurgery and its clinical application value. Methods Between February 2021 and August 2022, CSF and serum samples were collected via lumbar puncture from patients with high fever and suspected intracranial infection in the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) of our hospital. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the factors influencing elevated PCT in CSF. The diagnostic efficacy of each index was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results A total of 183 CSF samples were collected, of which 148 had increased PCT levels, including 73 cases of intracranial infection and 75 cases in the case‒control group. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) are extensively studied biodegradable polymers. However, the degradation behavior of their copolymer, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), in marine environments has not yet been confirmed. In this study, the changes in macroscopic and microscopic morphology, thermal properties, aggregation, and chemical structure of PLA, PGA, PLGA-85, and PLGA-75 (with 85% and 75% LA content) in simulated marine environments were investigated. Results revealed that degradation occurred through hydrolysis of ester bonds, and the degradation rate of PGA was faster than that of PLA. The amorphous region degraded preferentially over the crystalline region, leading to cleavage-induced crystallization and decreased thermal stability of PLA, PLGA-85, and PLGA-75. The crystal structures of PLGAs were similar to those of PLA, and the higher GA content, the faster was the degradation rate. This study provides a deeper understanding of the seawater degradation behaviors of PLA, PGA, and their copolymers, and provides guidance for the preparation of materials with controllable degradation performance.

A miniaturized balanced-to-unbalanced in-phase filtering power divider with wide upper stopband and wideband common-mode suppression is proposed. The in-phase feature is realized by the coupled/non-coupled lines. The stub with shunt-capacitor is used to realize the functions of filtering and miniaturization. The closed-form design equations are provided and discussed. To verify the design equations, one prototype with a center frequency of 1.0 GHz is designed and fabricated. The measured differential return loss is greater than 15 dB in the range of 0.82-1.22 GHz (39.2%). The upper stopband rejection is better than 20 dB from 1.41 to 3.57 GHz. Common-mode suppression is greater than 20 dB from 0 to 3.7 GHz. The measured results are in good agreement with electromagnetic simulations.

Abstract Background Multiple factors, including co-exposure between lifestyle and environmental risks, are important in susceptibility to oxidative DNA damage. However, the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) methylation can mediate the co-exposure effect between smoking and occupational polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in development of oxidative DNA damage. Methods We explored the associations between smoking and occupational PAH co-exposure effect, CYP1A1 methylation and oxidative DNA damage among 500 workers from a coke-oven plant in China. Urine biomarkers of PAH exposure (1-hydroxypyrene, 1-OHP; 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-NAP; 2-hydroxyfluorene, 2-FLU; and 9-hydroxyphenanthren, 9-PHE) and a marker of oxidative DNA damage (8-hydroxy- 2′- deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG) were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. CYP1A1 methylation was measured by pyrosequencing. Finally, mediation analysis was performed to investigate whether CYP1A1 methylation mediated smoking and occupational PAH co-exposure effect on oxidative DNA damage. Results We observed significant associations of smoking and 1-OHP co-exposure with CYP1A1 hypomethylation (OR: 1.87, 95% CI: 1.01–3.47) and high 8-OHdG (OR: 2.13, 95% CI: 1.14–3.97). There was a significant relationship between CYP1A1 hypomethylation and high 8-OHdG (1st vs. 3rd tertile = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.01–2.47, P for trend = 0.046). In addition, mediation analysis suggested CYP1A1 hypomethylation could explain 13.6% of effect of high 8-OHdG related to smoking and 1-OHP co-exposure. Conclusions Our findings suggested that the co-exposure effect of smoking and occupational PAH could increase the risk of oxidative DNA damage by a mechanism partly involving CYP1A1 hypomethylation.

Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) are polyester materials with excellent biodegradability under soil and compost conditions. However, the research on their degradation process in the marine environment is scarce. In this study, a more realistic simulation marine environment with sediment and marine organisms was developed, followed by investigation of the biodegradation behavior of PBAT and PBS mulch in it. The effect of aromatic structure, carboxyl end group content, molecular weight, and inorganic fillers on the degeneration of mulch was characterized by the changes in appearance, chemical structure, thermal properties, and crystallinity via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, element analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The molecular weight of polyester blends decreased, while the content of the C-O bond in the composites increased, indicating that the samples indeed degraded. The degradation rate was measured with the CO2 release amount. The aliphatic polyester structure, lower molecular weight, higher carboxyl end group content, and the involvement of inorganic fillers facilitate the disintegration of polyester in the marine environment, which provides an effective method to construct materials with controllable biodegradable performance.

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) are well-known biodegadable polyesters due to their outstanding performance. The biodegradation behavior of PLA/PBAT blends in freshwater with sediment is investigated in this study by analyzing the appearance, chemical structure and aggregation structure of their degraded residues via SEM, TG, DSC, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and XPS. The effect of aggregation structure, hydrophilia and biodegradation mechanisms of PBAT and PLA on the biodegradability of PLA/PBAT blends is illuminated in this work. After biodegradation, the butylene terephthalate unit in the molecular structure of the components and the molecular weight of PLA/PBAT blends decreased, while the content of C-O bond in the composites increased, indicating that the samples indeed degraded. After 24 months of degradation, the increase in the relative peak area proportion of C-O to C=O in PLA/PBAT-25, PLA/PBAT-50 and PLA/PBAT-75 was 62%, 46% and 68%, respectively. The biodegradation rates of PBAT and PLA in the PLA/PBAT blend were lower than those for the respective single polymers.

Ice nuclei are very important factors as they significantly affect the development and evolvement of convective clouds such as hail clouds. In this study, numerical simulations of hail processes in the Zhejiang Province were conducted using a mesoscale numerical model (WRF v3.4). The effects of six ice nuclei parameterization schemes on the macroscopic and microscopic structures of hail clouds were compared. The effect of the ice nuclei concentration on ground hailfall is stronger than that on ground rainfall. There were significant spatiotemporal, intensity, and distribution differences in hailfall. Changes in the ice nuclei concentration caused different changes in hydrometeors and directly affected the ice crystals, and, hence, the spatiotemporal distribution of other hydrometeors and the thermodynamic structure of clouds. An increased ice nuclei concentration raises the initial concentration of ice crystals with higher mixing ratio. In the developing and early maturation stages of hail cloud, a larger number of ice crystals competed for water vapor with increasing ice nuclei concentration. This effect prevents ice crystals from maturing into snow particles and inhibits the formation and growth of hail embryos. During later maturation stages, updraft in the cloud intensified and more supercooled water was transported above the 0°C level, benefitting the production and growth of hail particles. An increased ice nuclei concentration therefore favors the formation of hail.

While existing research has explored control strategies in multi-dimensional fields, the interconnectedness between electromagnetic and vibrational fields remains relatively uncharted. To explore this intersection and harness its potential, we propose an intelligent programmable metasurface that modulates electromagnetic fields based on vibration intensity information. This paper introduces a groundbreaking approach that synergizes the physical fields of mechanical (vibrational) waves with electromagnetic waves, facilitating the detection and manipulation of information from both fields. By combining a programmable metasurface, vibration sensors, and microcontroller units, we have achieved regulation of the electromagnetic field through utilization of vibration intensity information. In this work, we have introduced six coding patterns that facilitate dual-beam scanning with variable deflection angles. A 20 × 20 metasurface is fabricated and measured, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. This research opens a new avenue for manipulating electromagnetic waves. Furthermore, the findings have the potential to impact a wide range of fields, including building structuralhealth monitoring, industrial production, mechanical equipment monitoring, and earthquake monitoring.
