Background: Associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is the most prevalent liver disease that women typically experience during pregnancy. This study aimed to evaluate prenatal comfort, sleep, and quality of life in pregnant women with cholestasis., Methods: This cross-sectional study was implemented between November 2022 and June 2023 at Mardin Training and Research Hospital with 150 pregnant women who received a diagnosis of pregnancy-induced intrahepatic cholestasis and agreed to participate. The following tools were utilized to collect data: A personal information form exploring socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics of participants, the Prenatal Comfort Scale (PCS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief Form (WHOQOL-BREF)., Results: The mean age of participants was 27.79 ± 6.33 years. The mean PCS and PSQI scores were 61.20 ± 5.84 and 9.52 ± 3.02, respectively. The mean scores of "physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environmental health" sub-dimensions in WHOQOL-BREF were 10.63 ± 2.18, 10.48 ± 2.10, 11.31 ± 3.28, and 11.27 ± 2.10, respectively. A significant difference was found for PSQI regarding hospitalization status and change in sleep quality variables ( p = 0.025 and p = 0.035, respectively)., Conclusions: Cholestasis of pregnancy creates problems such as pruritus, body image changes, hospitalization, and poor sleep quality in women. This study showed that pregnant women with cholestasis had low levels of sleep quality and quality of life, implying that cholestasis affects their sleep quality, prenatal comfort levels, and quality of life in general. In addition, it is seen that women with this problem do not want to fall pregnant again.

Background: Developing a care plan for patients is not specific to nursing or midwifery; it is the case in every situation where patients seek help from care providers. Midwifery students draw upon NANDA-I diagnoses while developing care plans (CPs) in clinical practices, and plan and apply their care accordingly. This study aims to identify the views of midwifery students on the NANDA-I diagnoses and CPs that they use in clinical practice., Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 222 students between September and December 2022. The research data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire based on NANDA-I diagnoses and CPs. In line with the existing literature, the questionnaire was designed by two academicians who specialized in nursing fundamentals and midwifery. The questionnaire consisted of closed-ended (8 questions) and open-ended (7 questions) questions. Data analysis was performed with descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square test., Results: Of 222 students, 57.7% stated that they did not know the definition of a CP. It was found that 46.8% of the students felt inadequate at developing CPs. Furthermore, the students stated that they found the CP training provided during their undergraduate study partially sufficient, with a rate of 52.7%, and 16.7% of midwifery students offered suggestions about CP teaching. The number of midwifery-related diagnoses of which the students were aware was 19., Conclusions: The study was beneficial in terms of identifying the deficiencies of the students related to NANDA-I diagnoses and developing CPs that might be overcome through education and observing the midwifery-related diagnoses that they used. It is of critical importance to educate midwifery students about midwifery-related NANDA-I diagnoses in order that they embrace midwifery diagnoses and CP learning.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted various aspects of healthcare services, including emergency care services. Healthcare staff face mental issues and physical exertion when caring for patients potentially infected with COVID-19. Understanding the experiences and perspectives of emergency department (ED) healthcare staff during the COVID-19 pandemic is essential to inform evidence-based interventions and strategies to mitigate the impact on emergency care services. This study aims to investigate the experiences of ED healthcare staff regarding emergency care services during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus providing valuable insights into the challenges faced., Materials and Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional study design. Data were collected from 256 ED healthcare staff working in nine different hospitals located in Turkey between November 15, 2021, and December 30, 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics., Results: A total of 256 participants were included in the study. Of the participants, 58.6% were nurses, 19.5% were ED doctors, and 21.9% were emergency medical technicians. In addition, 67.2% of the participants were infected with COVID-19, and almost all of them (94.1%) were psychologically affected by the pandemic process. It was found that 85.2% of ED healthcare staff felt excluded by society due to being healthcare staff and 71.9% had to be separated from their families. Nurses were separated from their families at the highest rate (78%) during this period., Conclusion: More than half of the ED healthcare staff had problems accessing protective equipment and were separated from their families during the pandemic due to the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Purpose: This study aims to identify NANDA-I nursing diagnoses that midwives working in obstetrics and gynecologic service use while managing the electronic nursing care process., Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a descriptive way to evaluate electronic care plan records of 3025 patients staying in obstetrics and gynecologic service between April 1, 2020. and April 1, 2021. Diagnoses in the records of the electronic care process were digitalized by two faculty members. Then, NANDA-I nursing diagnoses used by midwives were identified. NANDA-I nursing diagnoses used by midwives were identified., Findings: It was determined that diagnoses in care plans documented from the system within the 1-year period fell into eight domains and 10 classes, and 5819 diagnoses were given in total. The most frequent diagnoses given in obstetrics and gynecologic service were "acute pain" and "risk for bleeding.", Conclusion: Findings of this study revealed that nursing care records in obstetrics and gynecologic service did not have a large number of diagnoses and interventions., Implications for Nursing Practice: Care plans directly reflect the contribution of the care to the patient. Consequently, midwives being aware of and recording nursing diagnoses while giving care will ensure a standardized language and visibility in care. The study was cross-sectional research that surveyed 410 nurses and midwives from March 2020 to March 2021 in Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of nurses and midwives towards recognizing violence against women. The "Scale for Nurses' and Midwives' Recognition of the Symptoms of Violence against Women" were used. The average total scale score was 20.3 ± 3.2. The score of participants who are receiving postgraduate education, working in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics, and considering intervention as a professional responsibility when encountering a woman who has experienced violence was found to be significantly higher than the other groups (p<.05). It is important for midwives and nurses to be aware of signs of violence to identify violence against women. This study aims to determine contraceptive intentions of pregnant women in the third trimester. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a training and research hospital in Mardin province between March 2023 and May 2023. In total, 253 pregnant women who had the ability to communicate in Turkish and agreed to participate were included in the study. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a survey and the Contraceptive Intent Questionnaire (CIQ). The average age of the participants was 28.87 ± 5.35 with 30.8% of them holding a secondary school degree. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference in terms of CIQ score between categories of the following descriptive variables: education level, husband's/partner's education level, fertility plan, receiving family planning counseling during pregnancy, and paying for the contraceptive methods used (P = .046, P = .013, P < .001, P = .008, and P < .001 respectively). Background Antenatal breastfeeding training is defined as the provision of breastfeeding information during pregnancy, which can be given in various ways, such as individual training and group training. The inclusion of fathers in this educational approach is associated with the initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding. However, studies involving fathers are limited. This randomized controlled study aimed to compare the effects of individual and group training given to parents and those of normal hospital practices on mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy and fathers' attitudes toward breastfeeding. Methods The study was conducted randomly in a training and research hospital between March 2014 and September 2014 and included 180 people. Of them, 90 were prospective mothers who were in the third trimester of their pregnancy and were living with their husbands and received service from the obstetrics outpatient clinic of the hospital. The expecting mothers and their husbands were randomly assigned to three groups: individual training, group training and control group. After randomization, prospective mothers and fathers in all groups received training. In the first week, sixth week, and fourth month after delivery, the mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding attitudes as well as the attitudes of the fathers' toward breastfeeding were evaluated. Results There were no differences between the groups in terms of variables such as age, education status, family type, breastfeeding education status, and mode of delivery. There were significant differences between the scores obtained from the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale and its subscales in all three groups during the postpartum period (p <0.05). The highest scale scores were obtained at the postpartum fourth month in the individual training and control groups and at the postpartum sixth week in the group training group. There were differences between the scores obtained by the mothers and fathers during the postpartum process from the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (p<0.05). Conclusion The analysis of all the results indicates that breastfeeding education given to parents in the antenatal period increases their breastfeeding self-efficacy and provides them with a positive attitude toward breastfeeding. Background: Personal genetic predisposition and early life environmental factors are important for the development of childhood asthma. We aimed to search whether egg, milk and mite sensitizations at 0-2 years old are risk factors for asthma symptoms at 9-11 years old., Methods: A total of 210 wheezer children who had specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E in 2010-2012 were included in the study (followed by pediatric allergy). Patients were divided into non-atopic (group 1, n = 157) and atopic patients [groups 2-7, n = 53 (5 patients were in both group 4 and group 5)] based on sensitizations. Using the International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood questionnaire, current wheeze (CW, 2nd question), exercise wheezing (EW, 7th question), and dry cough (DC, 8th question) were surveyed. Also, parental allergies, eczema at 0-2 years, current eosinophil percentage and total IgE were recorded., Results: Eczema was observed as an important risk factor [CW: odds ratio (OR) = 2.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.54-5.23, P ≤ 0.001; EW: OR = 2.71, 95% CI = 1.33-5.54, P = 0.006; DC: OR = 3.03, 95% CI = 1.47-6.25, P = 0.003], whereas having no atopic sensitization at 0-2-year-old (group 1) was found as a significant protective factor for asthma at 9-11 years old (CW: OR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.15-0.70, P = 0.004; EW: OR = 0.21, 95% CI 0.10-0.44, P ≤ 0.001; DC: OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.10-0.59, P = 0.002)., Conclusion: Early personal eczema is a significant risk factor for the development of asthma symptoms at 9-11 years old, whereas not having an allergic sensitization at 0-2 years old (group 1) is an important protective factor., (© 2022. Background: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) has developed new criteria for diagnosing patients with malnutrition. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria, Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), and Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and their association with long-term mortality in patients hospitalized for acute illnesses., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in a sample of 231 patients with different comorbidities hospitalized for acute illnesses in medical or surgical wards. Nutrition status was retrospectively assessed with GLIM criteria using patients' records at admission in addition to SGA and NRS-2002. The agreement between the tools was calculated using κ statistics, and the association of malnutrition according to each tool and mortality were analyzed using Cox regression analysis., Results: The mean age of the patients was 62.2 ± 18.2 years, and 56.7% were women. The prevalence of malnutrition was 35.9% with GLIM criteria, 37.2% with SGA, and 38% with NRS-2002. The agreement between tools was good (GLIM-SGA, κ = 0.804; GLIM-NRS-2002, κ = 0.784). During a median follow-up period of 63.2 months, 79 deaths occurred. The sensitivity in predicting 5-year mortality was 59.49%, 58.23%, and 58.23%, and specificity was 76.32%, 73.68%, and 72.37% for GLIM criteria, SGA, and NRS-2002, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, GLIM criteria best predicted 5-year mortality (hazard ratio, 3.09; 95% CI, 1.96-4.86; P < .001)., Conclusions: Our findings support the effectiveness of GLIM in diagnosing malnutrition and predicting all-cause mortality among patients hospitalized for acute illnesses., (© 2020 American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.)

Hasankeyf is an ancient city, dating back to more than 10,000 years, in the Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkey. The area is separated by the Tigris River on both sides and located in the Batman province. However, as a result of a dam project, in February 2020, this ancient city and some of its surrounding villages were totally flooded. The residents were moved to new settlements. This study aimed to prevent the possible loss of ethnomedicinal knowledge of plants due to migration as well as to pass on this knowledge to the future generations. The field studies were conducted between March 2017 and November 2019 in the city center and 22 rural settlements of Hasankeyf. Also, the areas where intensive migration was experienced were visited frequently. Interviews were conducted with a total of 131 participants (76 women and 55 men) while gathering plants with them. Information was collected through interviews and questionnaires. The results were analyzed by quantitative indices of information consensus factor (FIC) and use value (UV). A total of 94 plant taxa belonging to 40 families were identified in the study area. The most common medicinal plant families are Lamiaceae (13), Asteraceae (8), Rosaceae (6), Malvaceae (6), Amaryllidaceae (5), Brassicaceae (4), and Solanaceae (4). The most common preparations were infusion, fresh application, and crushing. The taxa having the highest count of use value (UV) were Teucrium polium , Matricaria aurea , Urtica dioica , Mentha longifolia , and Quercus brantii . Besides, the recorded ailments were grouped into categories based on information provided by the interviewees. The most important use categories among the informants were diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory disorders, and dermatological disorders. Background: Urticaria can be the only sign of a food allergy or can be seen together with other signs and symptoms of a food allergy., Objective: To determine the demographic, etiologic, and clinical features of food-induced acute urticaria in childhood., Methods: Patients suspected of food-induced acute urticaria were included in this prospective cross-sectional multicenter study., Results: Two hundred twenty-nine urticaria cases were included in this study. Seventeen patients who did not meet the inclusion criteria of the study were excluded. Of the 212 included cases, 179 (84.4%) were diagnosed with definitive food-induced acute urticaria. The most common foods causing acute urticaria were cow's milk, hen's eggs, and nuts in 56.4, 35.2, and 19% of cases, respectively. The positive predictive value of a history of milk-induced acute urticaria together with a milk-specific IgE >5 kU/L for cow's milk-induced acute urticaria was 92% (95% CI: 81-96%). A history of cow's milk-induced and/or hen's egg-induced acute urticaria was consistent with a definitive diagnosis of food-induced urticaria (Chen's kappa: 0.664 and 0.627 for milk and eggs, respectively). Urticaria activity scores were higher in patients with food-induced acute urticaria (p = 0.002)., Conclusion: Cow's milk, hen's eggs, and nuts were the most common allergens in the etiology of childhood food-induced acute urticaria. Background: The Yeşilli district (Mardin) is located in the southeastern of Turkey and hosts different cultures. The objective of this study was to record the traditional knowledge of wild edible plants used by indigenous people in Yeşilli, where no ethnobotanical studies have been conducted previously., Methods: An ethnobotanical study was carried out in Yeşilli district in March 2017-March 2019 to document the traditional knowledge of wild edible plants. The data were collected by interviewing 62 informants. Additionally, the data were analysed based on the cultural importance index (CI) and factor informant consensus (F İC ) to determine the cultural significance of wild edible plants and knowledge of wild edible plants among the informants., Results: We documented 74 wild edible taxa belonging to 31 families and 57 genera in the present study. The richness of the wild edible taxa was highest for vegetables (46 taxa), followed by medicinal plants (17 taxa) and fruit (14 taxa). The most important families were Asteraceae (ten taxa), Rosaceae (seven taxa) and Fabaceae (six taxa). The most culturally important taxa (based on the CI index) were Ficus carica subsp. carica, Lepidium draba, Anchusa strigosa, Rhus coriaria, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Sinapis alba, Gundelia tournefortii, Notobasis syriaca, Onopordum carduchorum, Malva neglecta, Mentha longifolia, Juglans regia and Urtica dioica. The maximum number of use reports was recorded for vegetables (1011). The factor informant consensus index (F ic ) varied between 0.95 and 0.98 for preserved vegetables, beverages and spices and processed fruits have the highest F ic (0.99). We reported for the first time the ethnobotanical usage of 12 taxa as food. We also recorded the use of Allium wendelboanum, an endemic species in the study area., Conclusion: The obtained data were compared with data from other wild edible and ethnobotanical studies conducted in Turkey and particularly those conducted in eastern Turkey. Furthermore, the data were compared with data from studies conducted in the bordering countries of Iraq and Armenia. The present study reflects the cultural diversity of the region, and it is necessary to conduct more studies since it is thought that this diversity will contribute to the economy. This study will enable the traditional use of wild plants as food sources to be passed on to future generations.

Background: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is a serious problem and is associated with a number of adverse outcomes. The Nutritional Risk Screening-2002 (NRS-2002) tool was designed to identify patients at nutrition risk. The validation of NRS-2002 compared with detailed clinical assessment of nutrition status was not studied before in hospitalized Turkish adults. The aim of this study is to determine validity, sensitivity, and specificity of the Turkish version of NRS-2002 in a hospitalized adult population., Methods: A total of 271 consecutive hospitalized patients aged >18 years admitted to surgical and medical wards of a university hospital in Turkey were included in this single-center non interventional validity study. Assessment by geriatricians was used as the reference method. Two geriatricians experienced in the field of malnutrition interpreted the patients' nutrition status after the evaluation of several parameters. Patients were divided into "at nutrition risk" and "not at nutrition risk" groups by geriatricians. Concordance between the 2 geriatricians' clinical assessments was analyzed by κ statistics. Excellent concordance was found; therefore, the first geriatrician's decisions were accepted as the gold standard. The correlation of nutrition status of the patients, determined with NRS-2002 and experienced geriatrician's decisions, was evaluated for the validity., Results: NRS-2002 has a sensitivity of 88% and specificity of 92% when compared with professional assessment. The positive and negative predictive values were 87% and 92%, respectively. Background/objectives: To sonographically assess the muscle mass and architecture of sarcopenic elderly subjects, and to explore the utility of ultrasound (US) measurements in predicting sarcopenia., Methods: One hundred elderly subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Mean age value of our study population was 73.08±6.18years. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was confirmed by measuring fat-free mass index (using bioelectrical impedance analysis) and handgrip strength. Calf circumference was measured and US evaluations comprised bilateral gastrocnemius muscle (MG) thickness, fascicle length and pennate angles; subcutaneous fat and dermis thicknesses in the calf., Results: Bilateral muscle thickness and fascicle length values were significantly lower in patients with sarcopenia (both p<0.05). Sarcopenic and nonsarcopenic subjects had similar pennate angles, subcutaneous fat and dermis thicknesses. Median thickness ratio (100×t (MG)/[t (subcutaneous tissue)+t (dermis)+t (MG)]) values were 64% (40-88%) in the right and 64% (38-86%) in the left calf. Bilateral MG thickness and fascicle length values showed high sensitivity in predicting sarcopenia (all values>76.92%)., Conclusions: Gastrocnemius muscle thickness and fascicle length values are lower in sarcopenic elderly and these two parameters can serve as alternative measurements for predicting/quantifying sarcopenia. Calf circumference measurements alone may not be appropriate for assessing sarcopenia. Background: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the somatic, psychological, functional, and social or lifestyle characteristics linked to malnutrition in elderly people at a hospital in Turkey., Material and Methods: This study included 1030 patients older than 65 years of age who were seen at the internal medicine and geriatrics outpatient clinics of the study centers in Istanbul, Ankara, Duzce, Corum, Mardin, Malatya, and Diyarbakir provinces between January and December 2014. All patients underwent Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) tests via one-on-one interview method. The demographic properties of the patients were also recorded during this interview., Results: Among 1030 patients included in this study, 196 (19%) had malnutrition and 300 (29.1%) had malnutrition risk. The malnutrition group and the other groups were significantly different with respect to mean GDS score, income status, educational status, the number of children, functional status (ADL, IADL), the number of patients with depression, and the number of comorbid disorders. According to the results of the logistic regression analysis, age (OR=95% CI: 1.007-1.056; p=0.012), BMI (OR=95% CI: 0.702-0.796; p<0.001), educational status (OR=95% CI: 0.359-0.897; p=0.015), comorbidity (OR=95% CI: 2.296-5.448; p<0.001), and depression score (OR=95% CI: 1.104-3.051; p=0.02) were independently associated with malnutrition., Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that age, depression, BMI, comorbidity, and the educational status were independently associated with malnutrition in an elderly population.

Aim: The studies on human milk banking in Turkey, has being carried out at a hospital in Izmir province. There are different point of views about milk banking. The aim of the study is to determine the knowledge and the views of the mothers towards milk banking., Material and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey. The study was carried out with 404 mothers who gave birth in a two maternity hospitals and one university hospital in İzmir using the face-to-face interview technique between March 2014 and June 2014. The study data were collected using a 30-item socio-demographic questionnaire., Results: The mothers' mean age was 28.4 years (16-46 years). Of the mothers, 45.5% were primary school graduates, 80.2% were members of a nuclear family, 75.7% had less than three children, 63.4% gave birth by caesarean section and only 79.5 percent were able to breastfeed before being discharged. Of the mothers, 41.6% were aware of milk banking, 71.3% were willing to receive milk bank services and 68.8% were willing to donate breastmilk. 62.2% of those who did not want to make donation stated risk of contagion as a reason, 8.2% of the participants had worked as wet-nurse before., Conclusions: Most mothers revealed positive approaches and opinions about establishment of milk banking and milk donation. However, there were some concerns due to the risk of infectious diseases and religious beliefs. Efforts should be made to raise awareness and mothers should be informed about the importance of breast milk and breastfeeding so that milk banks can be regarded as an additional choice.

Background/aim: Inflammation may play an important role in Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. A growing amount of evidence indicates that resistin has hallmark regulatory functions such as inflammatory states. The aim of this study was to determine whether plasma resistin levels would be useful in the diagnosis of patients with AD and to investigate the relationships between resistin and other inflammatory markers such as hs-CRP and TNF-α. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 38 AD patients and 32 control subjects with normal cognitive function aged 65 years and over were included. The diagnosis of AD was made according to DSM-IV and NINCDS-ADRDA criteria. Serum levels of resistin were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method using the human resistin E50 kit. Results: The median resistin level of AD patients was significantly higher than in the control group (86.3 vs. 70.8 pg/mL, P = 0.002). Overall accuracy of resistin in determining AD was 70.66%, with sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of 75.0%, 65.5%, 73.0%, and 67.9%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between AD patients and control subjects with respect to hs-CRP and TNF-α levels. Conclusion: Resistin levels may be considered as a predictor of AD and it may predict activation of the immune system in AD pathophysiology.

Objectives: Incidences of overactive bladder (OAB) and cognitive dysfunction increase with aging. Treatment of OAB with antimuscarinic agents may result in cognitive decline, especially in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of antimuscarinic treatment on cognitive functions, depression, and quality of life (QOL) of patients with OAB., Methods: This non-interventional prospective observational study was conducted in a geriatric medicine outpatient clinic. Overall, 168 OAB patients were enrolled. Patients were followed up in five groups: oxybutynin, darifenacin, tolterodine, trospium, and control groups. Follow-up visits were done at second, third, and sixth months. Comprehensive geriatric assessment, cognitive and mood assessment, QOL scales (IIQ-7, UDI-6) were performed., Results: Mean age of the patients was 73.5 ± 6.1. Of the 168 patients, 92.3% were female, 83.3% benefited from the treatment, and 37.1% discontinued the medication. Discontinuation rate and frequency of side effects were more frequent in the oxybutynin group. Mini Mental State Examination scores did not decline after treatment, even in AD patients. Geriatric Depression Scale scores, Activities of Daily Living scores, and QOL scores significantly improved after treatment., Conclusion: Antimuscarinic agents are effective in OAB treatment. They have a positive impact on daily life activities, depression, and QOL indices. Furthermore, they do not have a negative effect on cognitive function in older adults with or without AD.

Background/aim: To compare plasma vitamin D concentrations among patients with normal cognitive function (control group), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer disease (AD)., Materials and Methods: In total, 158 patients with AD, 228 patients with MCI, and 603 control subjects were included. Plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured after comprehensive geriatric assessment and compared among groups. SPSS 15.0 was used for statistical analysis., Results: Mean levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were significantly different among the 3 groups of AD patients, MCI patients, and controls (P < 0.001). Post hoc analysis revealed that the levels were significantly lower in the MCI group than the control group (P = 0.002) and significantly lower in the AD group than the control group (P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis showed that age (OR: 1.070, 95% CI: 1.025-1.116, P = 0.002), instrumental activities of daily living score (OR: 0.920, 95% CI: 0.850-0.995, P = 0.037), 25-hydroxyvitamin D level (OR: 0.959, 95% CI: 0.932-0.987, P = 0.004), and diabetes mellitus (OR: 2.476, 95% CI: 1.153-5.319, P = 0.020) were factors independently associated with AD., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is a correction between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and cognitive functions.

In this research, the chemical composition and biological activities of various extracts obtained from whole parts of Sedum sediforme (Jacq.) Pau were compared. The amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid components in crude extracts were determined by expression as pyrocatechol and quercetin equivalents, respectively. All of the extracts (petroleum ether, acetone, methanol, and water) obtained from S. sediforme showed strong antioxidant activity in four tested methods. Particularly, the IC50 values of the methanol extract, which was the richest in terms of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, were found to be lower than those of α-tocopherol and BHT in β-carotene bleaching (9.78 ± 0.06 μg/mL), DPPH free radical scavenging (9.07 ± 0.07 μg/mL), and ABTS cation radical scavenging (5.87 ± 0.03 μg/mL) methods. Furthermore, the methanol extract of S. sediforme showed higher inhibition activity than galanthamine against acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterase enzymes. Also, acetone and methanol extracts exhibited moderate antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans. The main constituents of fatty acid and essential oil were identified as palmitic acid (C16:0) (28.8%) and α-selinene (20.4%), respectively, by GC-MS. In the methanol extract of S. sediforme, quercetin, rutin, naringenin, and protocatechuic, p-coumaric, caffeic, and chlorogenic acids were detected and quantified by LC-MS/MS. Results of the current study showed that the methanol extract of S. sediforme may also be used as a food supplement.

This is the first report in the literature on essential oil compositions of Tragopogon latifolius var. angustifolius and Lycopsis orientalis which were analysed by using GC-FID and GC-MS techniques. The main constituents of T. latifolius var. angustifolius were identified as α-selinene (10.5%), 2,5-di-tert octyl-p-benzoquinone (9.5%) and valencene (7.0%); however, the main components of L. orientalis were identified as heptacosane (10.5%), τ-muurolene (9.6%) and tetratetracontane (9.4%). The essential oils of T. latifolius var. angustifolius and L. orientalis species exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterase enzymes at 200 μg/mL.

Primary melanomas of the genitourinary tract are rare and have poor prognoses. We report a case of a urethral malignant melanoma of a 63-year-old man. This case was regarded as a primary malignant melanoma of the urethra according to histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. Herein, the case is presented and the relevant literature is reviewed and discussed.

Introduction: Mortality rates of intensive care patients are quite high. The aim of this study was to determine the availability of thyroid function tests and predictive scoring systems on the outcome of cirrhotic patients admitted to the intensive care unit., Methods: A total of 106 patients were included in the final analysis, of which 32 were men (30.2%) and 74 were women (69.8%). Predictors of mortality that were investigated include acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE II), model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores and thyroid function tests including free triiodo-L-thryronin (fT3), free tetraiodothyronine/thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone/thyrotropin (TSH) levels., Results: High APACHE II, MELD, CTP and SOFA score and suppression of fT3 were all found to be associated with higher mortality in our intensive care patients who have cirrhosis (P < 0.001). Suppression of fT3 was also found to be reciprocally correlated with high APACHE II, MELD, CTP and SOFA scores (P < 0.001). fT4 had also reciprocal correlation with APACHE II, MELD, CTP and mortality. There is no correlation between TSH levels and predictive scores or mortality., Conclusions: Calculation of APACHE II, MELD, CTP and SOFA scores and measurement of fT3 and fT4 levels may all be useful as predictors of mortality in intensive care patients who have cirrhosis.

Objective: This study aims to compare fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic widespread pain (CWP) patients who do not fulfill the criteria for tender points (TP)., Methods: We included 150 patients diagnosed with FM according to ACR 1990 criteria and 42 patients with CWP who did not fulfill TP criteria for FM into the study. The clinical features of the patients were recorded, and the TP count was determined. By means of a visual analog scale (VAS), all patients were questioned about the severity of pain and FM-related symptoms. In addition, the patients were administered the Duke Anxiety Depression (Duke-AD) scale and somatization symptom questionnaire. Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS) pain scale was used to determine the neuropathic pain score., Results: According to VAS, the severity of pain, sleep disturbance, the number of somatization symptoms, LANSS, and Duke-AD scores were significantly higher in FM patients than in patients with CWP (all P values <0.05). The number of TP correlated with severity of pain (r = 0.32, P < 0.001), the number of somatization symptoms (r = 0.26, P = 0.01), sleep disturbance (r = 0.18, P = 0.01), and LANSS score (r = 0.4, P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that independent factors that affected the presence of > or =11 TP were the severity of pain on VAS (OR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01-1.06, P = 0.045) and LANSS score (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.12-1.62, P = 0.001)., Conclusions: CWP patients have symptoms similar to FM patients, though less severe. The most important factor that affects the criteria for fulfilling the number TP in CWP patients is the neuropathic pain score, which suggests that FM is primarily a neuropathic pain syndrome.
