7. Nonreciprocal Thermal Radiation With Zero-Contrast Gratings for Extreme Small Incident Angle

Abstract

To achieve the strong nonreciprocal thermal radiation (NTR), a scheme consisting of zero-contrast gratings (ZCGs) and Weyl semimetal (WSM) interlayer sitting on a silver (Ag) substrate is proposed and studied. This structure can be fabricated through the standard mask-based nano-fabrication processes. An almost complete violation of Kirchhoff’s law through the excitation of guided mode resonance (GMR) of ZCGs with an incident angle of only 1° and without an external magnetic field has been demonstrated. The distributions of magnetic field intensity at resonance have been calculated to reveal the underlying physical mechanism. The thorough analysis of the nonreciprocity with respect to structural parameters provides important insights for the design of future corresponding devices, which identifies unique fundamental and technological prospects of WSMs for engineering NTR.

Abstract

Most of the current ultraviolet (UV) optical lenses have narrow working band, which results in the decrease of their application adaptability. It is becasue of the fewer lens materials for UV lens design, and further it is difficult for the correction of UV color aberration. By applying the optical structure of negative-positive lenses overlapping distribution together with quasi-double Gaussian symmetry, as well as utilizing the wide spectral transmittance of fused quartz material and calcium fluoride material, an optical system with wide ultraviolet spectrum was designed, which also had the advantages of large relative aperture, wide field of view and high resolution. Its working wavelength was from 240 nm to 360 nm and the UV working bandwidth reached to 120 nm. All of the lenses in the designed UV optical system were spherical lenses, which could be fabricated and measured easily. Taking the central wavelength of 300 nm as the reference wavelength, the maximum lateral color aberration of the designed UV optical system was less than one pixel size over the full field of view. In the cut-off frequency of 50 lp·mm−1, the modulation transfer function (MTF) value was better than 0.4. The root mean square (RMS) value of image spot diagram in each field was better than 10 μm. The design results show that the designed UV optical system with wide UV spectrum has good imaging quality, high resolution and small color aberration, which satisfies the design requirements.

16. Actively Tunable Phonon Polaritons in Twisted α-MoO3 Slabs With Weyl Semimetal Interlayer

Abstract

Hybrid phonon polaritons (PhPs) in polar van der Waals (vdW) layered materials are very appealing for the confinement of light at the nanoscale and have facilitated various applications. However, manipulation of in-plane anisotropic PhPs via external stimuli presents a significant challenge. Here, we offer a lithography-free avenue to create structure for the realization of hybridized PhPs from $\alpha $ -phase molybdenum trioxide (3) vdW crystal with dependence on the chemical potential of Weyl semimetals (WSM). We demonstrate the distinct dispersion tunability of the strongly coupled PhPs and the optical topologic transitions from open to closed iso-frequency contours (IFCs). As the chemical potential is strongly temperature dependent, an alteration of the hybridization will be met by changing the temperature of surroundings, which enables an efficient way for the control of light-matter interaction at nanoscale in the mid-infrared (MIR) range.

Abstract

To explore lightning properties,a near-infrared afocal continuous zoom laser beam expanding system with large zoom ratio was designed to simulate lightning spot elements with different sizes for the lightning scene in a laboratory.On the basis of Gaussian geometric method,the overall dimensions of the system was calculated and the diameters and focal powers of lenses were determined reasonably.By using ZEMAX optical design software,optical structural parameters of the system were optimized,then total performance of the system was analyzed and evaluated.As the results,the system shows a 13X beam expansion ratio and excellent emitting beams with higher energies,uniform spots,and diffraction-free rings,which meets the requirements for simulating lightning properties.Furthermore,the central wavelength of the afocal laser beam expanding system is 777.4 nm,the incident laser beam with a diameter of 1.0 mm is continuously adjustable by a stepper motor and the emitted beam diameter ranges from φ0.8 mm to φ10.6 mm.The beam expanding system has some advantages of fewer lenses,simple structures and smoothly zoom trajectory,and it is suitable for simulating lighting elements with different sizes.

Abstract

With the development of modern precision optical fabrication and measurement technologies, optical freeform surfaces have been widely employed in different applications, especially in off-axis reflective optical systems. For an infrared optical system operating in the long-wavelength spectrum, compactness, brightness, and a wide field of view are key requirements for military surveillance or scene sensing. In this paper, we present an off-axis two-mirror freeform infrared imager with compactness and brightness. It has a large pupil of size 12 mm and a fast focal ratio of 2.2 over a wide 23° diagonal field of view, as well as good image quality. XY-polynomial freeform surfaces are applied to the viewing mirror and focusing mirror. The multiple degrees of freedom of optical freeform surfaces are very helpful for off-axis aberration correction and improving the optical performance over the entire pupil across the full field of view. The overall dimension of our designed freeform infrared imager is about 30 mm by 30 mm by 30 mm, which is elegantly miniaturized.
