5. CNN based Real-time Forest Fire Detection System for Low-power Embedded Devices

Abstract

This paper proposes a system architecture that uses deep learning image processing techniques to automatically identify forest fires in real-time using neural network models for small UAV applications. Considering the strict power and payload constraints of small UAVs, the proposed model runs on a compact, lightweight Raspberry Pi4B (RPi4B) and its performance is comparable to the state-of-the-art metrics (accuracy and real-time response) while achieving significant reduction in CPU usage and power consumption. The proposed YOLOv5 optimization approach used in this paper includes: 1) Replacing the backbone network to ShuffleNetV2, 2) Pruning the Head and Neck network following the backbone baseline, 3) Sparse training to implement the model-pruning method, 4) Fine-tuning of the pruned network to recover the detection accuracy and 5) Hardware acceleration by overclocking the RPi4B to improve the inference speed of the algorithm. Experimental results of the proposed forest fire detection system show that the proposed algorithm compared to the state-of-the-art that run on RPi single board computer, achieves 50% higher inference speed (9 FPS), reduction in CPU usage and temperature by 35% and 25% respectively and 10% reduced power consumption while the accuracy (92.5%) is only compromised by 2%. Finally, it is worth noting that the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is not affected by deviations in the bird-eye view angle.

6. Copper-Catalyzed Aerobic S-Amination of Sulfenamides for the Synthesis of Sulfinamidines

Abstract

Herein, we present a copper-catalyzed oxidative amination of sulfenamides for the synthesis of sulfinamidines. By the employment of air as the terminal oxidant, a diverse array of secondary and primary amines can be efficiently transformed into their corresponding products. This method is well-suited for last-stage functionalization, and the underlying mechanism has been investigated. The transformation is characterized by exceptional chemoselectivity, mild conditions, facile operation, and broad substrate compatibility, which have significant implications for the fields of pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis.

8. Random symmetric phase feeding compensation method for phased array radar based on equivalent monopulse model.

Abstract

In a phased array radar, the phase quantisation error of phase shifters can lead to the beam steering error (BSE) between the predetermined and the actual directions. Existing researches on phase feeding optimisation suffer from high computational complexity and large storage space. In this study, an equivalent monopulse method is first proposed to yield the BSE with O(N) complexity by formulating the equation between the phase quantisation error and BSE. Further, a symmetric phase feeding compensation (SPFC) method is developed on the basis of the proposed scheme to cancel the phase quantisation error employing a symmetric planar array. Subsequently, a random phase compensation method is formulated to further reduce the residual quantisation errors of SPFC, and a random symmetric phase feeding compensation (RSPFC) method is proposed. The proposed SPFC and RSPFC methods possess O(N) complexities and allow for parallel calculation of element phase feedings, thus making the proposed methods more applicable on the embedded beam controller of a phased array radar. Based on computer simulations and phased array radar experiments, the proposed SPFC and RSPFC methods are validated to yield superior beam pointing accuracies and can improve the fluctuations in angle tracking. Abstract

Background/Aims: Cardiac fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI) has been identified as a key factor in the development of heart failure, but the mechanisms undelying cardiac fibrosis remained unknown. microRNAs (miRNAs) are novel mechanisms leading to fibrotic diseases, including cardiac fibrosis. Previous studies revealed that miR-22 might be a potential target. However, the roles and mechanisms of miR-22 in cardiac fibrosis remained ill defined. The present study thus addressed the impact of miR-22 in cardiac fibrosis. Methods: After seven days following coronary artery occlusion in mice, tissues used for histology were collected and processed for Masson's Trichrome staining. In addition, cardiac fibroblasts were transfected with mimics and inhibitors of miR-22 using Lipofectamin 2000, and luciferase activity was measured in cell lysates using a luciferase assay kit. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of collagen1, α-SMA and TGFβRI proteins levels, and real time-PCR was employed to measure the Col1α1, Col3α1, miR-22 and TGFβRI mRNA levels. Results: In this study, we found that miR-22 was dynamically downregulated following MI induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery for 7 days, an effect paralleled by significant collagen deposition. Inhibition of miR-22 with AMO-22 resulted in increased expression of Col1α1, Col3α1 and fibrogenesis in cultured cardiac fibroblasts. Conversely, overexpression of miR-22 in cultured cardiac fibroblasts significantly abrogated angiotensin II-induced collagen formation and fibrogenesis. Furthermore, we found that TGFβRI is a direct target for miR-22, and downregulation of TGFβR may have mediated the antifibrotic effect of miR-22. Conclusion: Our data clearly demonstrate that miR-22 acts as a novel negative regulator of angiotensin II-induced cardiac fibrosis by suppressing the expression of TGFβRI in the heart and may represent a new potential therapeutic target for treating cardiac fibrosis.
