Abstract

We study polygonal analogues of several moving boundary problems and their time discretization which preserves the constant area speed property. We establish various polygonal analogues of geometric formulas for moving boundaries and make use of the geometric formulas for our numerical scheme and its analysis of general constant area speed motion of polygons. Abstract

In this paper we investigate a time dependent family of plane closed Jordan curves evolving in the normal direction with a velocity which is assumed to be a function of the curvature, tangential angle and position vector of a curve. We follow the direct approach and analyze the system of governing PDEs for relevant geometric quantities. We focus on a class of the so-called curvature adjusted tangential velocities for computation of the curvature driven flow of plane closed curves. Such a curvature adjusted tangential velocity depends on the modulus of the curvature and its curve average. Using the theory of abstract parabolic equations we prove local existence, uniqueness and continuation of classical solutions to the system of governing equations. We furthermore analyze geometric flows for which normal velocity may depend on global curve quantities like the length, enclosed area or total elastic energy of a curve. We also propose a stable numerical approximation scheme based on the flowing finite volume method. Abstract

The authors present white polymer light-emitting electrochemical cells (PLECs) fabricated with polymer blend films of poly(9,9-di-n-dodecylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFD) and π-conjugated triphenylamine molecules. The PLECs have bulk heterojunction structures composed of van der Waals interfaces between the PFD segments and the amine molecules. White-light electroluminescence (EL) can be achieved via light-mixing of the blue exciton emission from PFD and long-wavelength exciplex emission from excited complexes consisting of PFD segments (acceptors (As)) and the amine molecules (donors (Ds)). Precise control of the distances between the PFD and the amine molecules, affected through proper choice of the concentrations of PFD, amine molecules, and polymeric solid electrolytes, is critical to realizing white emission. White PLECs can be fabricated with PFD and amine molecules whose highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels range from –5.3 eV to –5.0 eV. Meanwhile, PLECs fabricated with amine molecules whose HOMO levels are lower than –5.6 eV cannot produce exciplex emission. The distances between the PFD and amine molecules of the exciplexes appear to be larger than 0.4 nm. These experimental data are explained by perturbation theory using the charge-transfer state (A–D+), the locally excited state (A*D), which is assumed to be the locally excited acceptor state in which there is no interaction with the donor molecule; and the energy gap between the HOMO levels of the PFD and the amine molecules. Color-stable white PLECs were fabricated using 4,4',4"-tris[N-(2-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]- triphenylamine, which has a HOMO level of –5.2 eV, as the amine molecule, and the color stability of the device is a function of the fact that PFD forms exciplexes with these molecules. MS-017 was produced on palm oil mill fibre (POMF) and partially characterized.The assay of the extracellular enzymes ofChaetomiumsp. nov. MS-017 on POMF in solid-state fermentation revealed cellulolytic, pectinolytic and extremely high xylanolytic activities. The protein was purified by Sephadex G-200 column chromatography. The SDS-PAGE demonstrated that the purified protein is a complex with at least five xylanolytic, four cellulolytic and eight pectinolytic components. The characterization of the complex at various temperatures showed that the reactivity and stability of the complex are not lost up to 60°C. In addition, the complex was very stable in a wide range of pH (3–9) and at high concentrations (10 mm) of cations and EDTA. The major products of xylan hydrolysis by the purified complex were determined to be xylobiose and xylotriose by thin-layer chromatography.Chaetomiumsp. nov. MS-017 preferentially produces a xylanolytic multienzyme complex on POMF in solid-state fermentation.This is the first report on the xylanolytic multienzyme complex produced by an aerobic thermophilic fungus. Abstract

We calculate all baryons in the 56 representation using QCD sum rules. All masses are well predicted and require stringent values of the chiral parameters 〈0|ūu|〉 = −(230 ± 15MeV)3andγ = 〈s¯s〉/〈ūu〉 − 1 = −0.19 ± 0.02. The determination of γ is the most precise to date, the strange quark mass and the quark condensate are also accurately fixed.

47. A Study of the Clinical Usefulness of Dobutamine Administered Orally

Abstract

Dobutamine 300 mg was administered orally to both healthy volunteers and to patients with circulatory failure. After the 300 mg dose of dobutamine, subjects were found to have a higher concentration of the drug in their plasma than the effective levels of 37.5 (SD 2.9) ng/ml (n = 5) normally seen during intravenous infusion of the clinically effective (5 μg/kg/min) dose. This increased concentration waned within 90 minutes.A clinical effect of dobutamine on the circulation was observed in both the healthy volunteers and the patients. An increase in the cardiac index of the patients continued longer than 90 minutes. An unidentified substance was noticed on chromatography measuring plasma dobutamine concentrations, which may have contributed to the increased cardiac index, although its chemical formula could not be determined. The results suggest that the oral administration of dobutamine may be expected to have a long-lasting and significant therapeutic effect on patients with chronic circulatory failure.

Abstract

We analyze a gradient flow of closed planar curves minimizing the anisoperimetric ratio. For such a flow the normal velocity is a function of the anisotropic curvature and it also depends on the total interfacial energy and enclosed area of the curve. In contrast to the gradient flow for the isoperimetric ratio, we show there exist initial curves for which the enclosed area is decreasing with respect to time. We also derive a mixed anisoperimetric inequality for the product of total interfacial energies corresponding to different anisotropy functions. Finally, we present several computational examples illustrating theoretical results.
