Abstract Background Process approach is valuable for memory assessment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), yet its underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aims to synergize the process approach with brain structure analysis to explore both the discriminative capacity and potential mechanisms underlying the process approach. Methods 37 subjects of MCI, 35 subjects of AD and 38 subjects of healthy control (HC) were included. The process approach in Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), including discriminability (A’), response bias (B"D), semantic clustering (LBCsem) and serial clustering (LBCser) was performed. The gray matter volume (GMV) was analyzed by voxel-based morphometry. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and partial correlations were conducted to explore the value of the process approach and investigate the relationship between the process approach, traditional indices of AVLT and GMV. Results ROC analysis showed the value of A’, B"D and LBCser in differentiating MCI and AD. Combining AVLT-Immediately Recall (AVLT-IR) and LBCser showed a higher value in diagnosing MCI. Partial correlations revealed that in the MCI group, A’ and B"D were mainly positively associated with GMV of the hippocampus and temporal lobe. Conclusion This study indicated that the process approach is a promising cognitive biomarker to detect MCI and AD.

Abstract Background Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare progressive degenerative disorder of unknown etiology. Here we report a rare case of PRS combined with lens subluxation in Eye and ENT hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai. To our knowledge, it is the first reported case of PRS combined with lens subluxation that has been managed surgically with phacoemulsification and CTR placement and IOL implantation in Shanghai. Case presentation A 60-year-old woman was referred for “right visual blur for 2 years” and had persistent right facial paralysis of unknown etiology since the age 12. She had right facial muscle atrophy and paralysis. Eye examination also showed the right eyelid pseudoptosis, enophthalmos, age-related cataract combined with lens subluxation existed in the right eye. The patient was diagnosed as age-related cataract and lens subluxation in the right eye and progressive hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome). We conducted a combined phacoemulsification, IOL and CTR implantation and pupilloplasty surgery for the patient under general anesthesia and the postoperative UCVA was 20/30 and remained for 1 year’s follow up. Conclusions Here we reported a rare case of PHA combined with lens subluxation in China. After appropriate eye surgery, the patient achieved satisfying vision result in the right eye.

The central environmental protection inspection (CEPI) system in China is a significant institutional innovation in national environmental governance. The CEPI applies a joint supervision strategy to address salient environmental issues and strictly enforce the environmental responsibilities of local governments. This study collects and organizes CEPI inspection reports covering three stages that encompass the first round, the “look back”, and the second round, applying text analysis to obtain sample data and conduct statistical quantification of word frequency in inspection reports and identify notable changes. The study explores the allocation of CEPI attention between policy objectives and the intensity of policy instruments. We determine that in conjunction with public opinion feedback, the CEPI conducts targeted inspections and focuses more on pollutant governance, which has high severity and can be addressed quickly. The CEPI fills the gap of normalized governance with a campaign-style governance approach. Regarding the intensity of policy measures, the CEPI primarily uses economic incentive policy instruments, supplemented by command-and-control and public guidance approaches, advancing the sustainability of regulatory effectiveness through economic, social, and political activities. This study extends knowledge in the field of CEPI policy priorities and implementation, expanding the literature related to outcomes of environmental policy in developing countries.

Polyimide (PI) aerogels, renowned for their nano-porous structure and exceptional performance across a spectrum of applications, often encounter significant challenges during fabrication, primarily due to severe shrinkage. In this study, we innovatively incorporated ceramic fibers of varying diameters into the PI aerogel matrix to enhance the shape stability against shrinkage. The structure of the resulting ceramic fiber-reinforced PI (CF-PI) aerogel composites as well as their performance in thermal decomposition, thermal insulation, and compression resistance were characterized. The results revealed that the CF-PI aerogel composites dried by supercritical ethanol achieved greatly reduced shrinkage as low as 5.0 vol.% and low thermal conductivity ranging from 31.2 mW·m−1·K−1 to 35.3 mW·m−1·K−1, showcasing their excellent performance in shape stability and thermal insulation. These composites also inherited the superior residue-forming ability of ceramic fibers and the robust mechanical attributes of PI, thereby exhibiting enhanced thermal stability and compression resistance. Besides, the effects of different drying conditions on the structure and properties of CF-PI aerogels were also discussed. The coupling use of supercritical ethanol drying with the addition of ceramic fibers is preferred. This preferred condition gives birth to low-shrinkage CF-PI aerogel composites, which also stand out for their integrated advantages include high thermal stability, low thermal conductivity, and high mechanical strength. These advantages attribute to CF-PI aerogel composites substantial potential for a wide range of applications, particularly as high-performance thermal insulation materials for extreme conditions.

Hydrodynamic-driven bedding rock landslides are the focus of research in the field of landslide geological hazards due to their large number, frequent disasters, and excessive harm. However, the understanding of the initiation mechanism of landslides is still insufficient, and the accurate prediction of landslides still faces great challenges. Because of this, this paper takes moderate-dip angle bedding rock landslides with weak interlayers as the research object and conducts a series of landslide model tests under the action of hydrodynamics by constructing an ideal single-layer landslide physical model. On this basis, the macroscopic deformation evolution process of the landslide and the erosion degradation characteristics of the slide zone soil is analyzed in depth. The results show that the failure of bedding rock landslides is associated with the slip surface roughness and dip angle and can go through four stages: the initial deformation stage, uniform deformation stage, accelerated deformation stage, and failure stage.The seepage erosion in the sliding zone causes the loss of aggregates, which reduces the shear strength and causes the slope to slide. Simultaneously, the compression-shear action and the deformation of the overlying slope also adversely affect erosion strength.Based on the variation law of soil cohesion in the sliding zone with hydraulic gradient and erosion time, a seepage-driven evolution model of soil cohesion in the sliding zone is proposed, which can describe the degradation process of soil cohesion in the sliding zone well. The existence of sliding surface roughness not only significantly affects the deterioration law of the sliding zone, but also changes the failure modes of different regions of the sliding zone. By considering the influence of the roughness on the failure modes of different areas of the sliding zone, the multi-effect correlation analysis of dynamic water is carried out, and the mechanical model of the landslide is established, which realizes the effective evaluation of the dynamic stability of the landslide. The research achievements in this study can provide a theoretical reference for predicting and preventing actual hydrodynamic-driven bedding rock landslides.

Abstract Background To investigate the associations between anterior segment biometry and high axial myopia in cataractous eyes in the Chinese population. Methods Data on 3438 eyes from 3438 subjects were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Anterior segment biometry, axial length measurements, and intraocular pressure evaluation were implemented using an Oculus Pentacam HR, a Zeiss IOLMaster 500, and a Nidek TonoRef II, respectively. A multivariate-adjusted logistic model and a multivariate-adjusted linear model were used for statistical analysis. Results The mean age of the subjects was 62.2 ± 10.6 years, and 56.4% were female. Kevlar aerogel is a kind of easy-casting nano-porous material with the characteristics of low density, high porosity, low thermal conductivity, high specific surface area, etc. It can serve as functional fibers and has a bright future in the field of thermal insulation after being processed into fabrics. To improve the tensile power of aerogel fibers to bear more loads while maintaining their flexibility for further braiding, a series of Kevlar aerogel tapes were fabricated in this study by using flattened needles. It is observed that the resultant aerogel tapes show a spindle-like cross section, and have greatly improved load-bearing capability with muscular tensile strength up to 2.07 MPa. The use of a larger needle is conductive to preparing aerogel tapes that are more attractive in load-bearing, and increasing Kevlar concentration tends to result in more muscular tapes with improved breaking stress but reduced elasticity. Besides, these tapes also inherit the excellent thermal stability and char-forming ability of Kevlar, starting to decompose at around 500°C and producing carbon residue more than 40% of their initial weight at 700°C. In addition, these Kevlar aerogel tapes also perform well in terms of thermal insulation. When exposed to a hot plate of 300 °C, the fabric braided from these aerogel tapes show a considerable temperature drop per unit thickness as high as 120°C mm−1. It can be envisaged that the developed aerogel tapes with muscular tensile strength and their fabric products will be promising for high-temperature thermal insulation applications, such as being used as the insulation layer for thermal protective clothing.

Aims: Metabolic switching during heart development contributes to postnatal cardiomyocyte (CM) cell cycle exit and loss of regenerative capacity in the mammalian heart. Metabolic control has potential for developing effective CM proliferation strategies. We sought to determine whether lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) regulated CM proliferation by inducing metabolic reprogramming. Methods and results: LDHA expression was high in P1 hearts and significantly decreased during postnatal heart development. CM-specific LDHA knockout mice were generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. CM-specific LDHA knockout inhibited CM proliferation, leading to worse cardiac function and a lower survival rate in the neonatal apical resection model. In contrast, CM-specific overexpression of LDHA promoted CM proliferation and cardiac repair post-MI. The α-MHC-H2B-mCh/CAG-eGFP-anillin system was used to confirm the proliferative effect triggered by LDHA on P7 CMs and adult hearts. Metabolomics, proteomics and Co-IP experiments indicated that LDHA-mediated succinyl coenzyme A reduction inhibited succinylation-dependent ubiquitination of thioredoxin reductase 1 (Txnrd1), which alleviated ROS and thereby promoted CM proliferation. In addition, flow cytometry and western blotting showed that LDHA-driven lactate production created a beneficial cardiac regenerative microenvironment by inducing M2 macrophage polarization. Conclusions: LDHA-mediated metabolic reprogramming promoted CM proliferation by alleviating ROS and inducing M2 macrophage polarization, indicating that LDHA might be an effective target for promoting cardiac repair post-MI.

Purpose: To analyze the anterior, posterior, and total corneal spherical aberrations (ASA, PSA, and TSA) in patients with Chinese bilateral ectopia lentis (EL).Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate corneal spherical aberration (CSA) using a Pentacam system at the 6-mm optical zone. Axial length, keratometry, astigmatism, and corneal asphericity were also determined.Results: This study included 247 patients (420 eyes) with a mean age of 18.1 years. The values of ASA, PSA, and TSA were 0.136 ± 0.100 μm, −0.118 ± 0.030 μm, and 0.095 ± 0.095 μm, respectively. In the EL patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS), ASA and TSA were significantly lower than in the non-MFS patients (0.126 ± 0.094 μm vs. 0.155 ± 0.107 μm, P = 0.004 for ASA; 0.085 ± 0.091 μm vs. 0.114 ± 0.099 μm, P = 0.003 for TSA), whereas PSA was not significantly different (P = 0.061). BackgroundDue to complicated and variable fundus status of highly myopic eyes, their visual benefit from cataract surgery remains hard to be determined preoperatively. We therefore aimed to develop an optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based deep learning algorithms to predict the postoperative visual acuity of highly myopic eyes after cataract surgery.Materials and MethodsThe internal dataset consisted of 1,415 highly myopic eyes having cataract surgeries in our hospital. Another external dataset consisted of 161 highly myopic eyes from Heping Eye Hospital. Preoperative macular OCT images were set as the only feature. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 4 weeks after surgery was set as the ground truth. Five different deep learning algorithms, namely ResNet-18, ResNet-34, ResNet-50, ResNet-101, and Inception-v3, were used to develop the model aiming at predicting the postoperative BCVA, and an ensemble learning was further developed. The model was further evaluated in the internal and external test datasets.ResultsThe ensemble learning showed the lowest mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.1566 logMAR and the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.2433 logMAR in the validation dataset. Promising outcomes in the internal and external test datasets were revealed with MAEs of 0.1524 and 0.1602 logMAR and RMSEs of 0.2612 and 0.2020 logMAR, respectively. Considerable sensitivity and precision were achieved in the BCVA < 0.30 logMAR group, with 90.32 and 75.34% in the internal test dataset and 81.75 and 89.60% in the external test dataset, respectively. The percentages of the prediction errors within ± 0.30 logMAR were 89.01% in the internal and 88.82% in the external test dataset.ConclusionPromising prediction outcomes of postoperative BCVA were achieved by the novel OCT-trained deep learning model, which will be helpful for the surgical planning of highly myopic cataract patients.

Purpose. To investigate the long-term changes of corneal endothelial cells (EC) in anterior chamber intraocular lens- (AC-IOL-) implanted eyes. Methods. Retrospective study. We included 37 eyes (25 patients) that received AC-IOL implantation previously in the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University between 1995 and 2016. Follow-up outcomes included the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell density, hexagonality, coefficient of variance, and central corneal thickness. Results. In total, 23 eyes (62.16%) with phakic and 14 eyes (37.84%) with aphakic AC-IOLs were included. Among these, 3 eyes (8.11%) were angle-supported AC-IOLs and 34 eyes (91.89%) were Artisan iris-fixated AC-IOLs. The mean age of patients was 41.40 ± 17.17 years, and the mean follow-up time was 12.12 ± 4.71 years in our study. At the follow-up time, corneal decompensation existed in 3 angle-supported AC-IOL eyes with a rate of 100% and 15 iris-fixated AC-IOL eyes with a rate of 44.12%. AC-IOL displacement occurred in 14 (41.18%) iris-fixated AC-IOL eyes. In the 19 iris-fixated AC-IOL eyes without corneal decompensation, significant changes also took place in corneal endothelial cells. Fumonisin B1 (FB1), belonging to the member of fumonisins, is one of the most toxic mycotoxins produced mainly by Fusarium proliferatum and Fusarium verticillioide. FB1 has caused extensive contamination worldwide, mainly in corn, rice, wheat, and their products, while it also poses a health risk and is toxic to animals and human. It has been shown to cause oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, cellular autophagy, and apoptosis. This review focuses on the current stage of FB1 contamination, its toxic effects of acute toxicity, immunotoxicity, organ toxicity, and reproductive toxicity on animals and humans. The potential toxic mechanisms of FB1 are discussed. One of the main aims of the work is to provide a reliable reference strategy for understanding the occurrence and toxicity of FB1.

Abstract Background To report a case for repair of cyclodialysis after trabeculectomy with Cionni-modified capsular tension ring. Case presentation A 64-year-old man who had undergone trabeculectomy of his left eye 3 months earlier visited our clinic owing to blurred vision. His visual acuity was 20/2000 and the intraocular pressure (IOP) was 6 mmHg. Slit-lamp examination showed a shallow anterior chamber and dense cataract. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed 360 ° detachment of the ciliary body and suspected cyclodialysis of the trabeculectomy incision. Choroidal detachment was confirmed by B-scan ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography. Phacoemulsification was performed in which a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted in the capsular bag and a Cionni-modified capsular tension ring (MCTR) was inserted into the ciliary sulcus. The maximum focal point of the MCTR was rotated to the site of the most severe cyclodialysis and the MCTR was sutured to the sclera through its two eyelets. The patient’s best-corrected visual acuity improved to 30/50 and the IOP increased to 16 mmHg after surgery. Gonioscopy and ultrasound biomicroscopy confirmed closure of the cyclodialysis and resolution of choroidal detachment. Conclusions Phacoemjulsification with implantation of an intraocular lens combined with insertion of an MCTR into the ciliary sulcus appears to be a relatively safe, effective, minimally invasive method for repairing cyclodialysis in cataract patients. Although the technique yielded good results and appeared to be safe in one patient, further studies are necessary to validate the findings on more patients and with a long-term follow-up.

Background/Aims: Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the development of cataracts, and glutaredoxins (Grxs) play a major protective role against oxidative stress in the lens. This study aimed to reveal the global regulatory network of Grx1. Methods: Stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) was used in a proteome-wide quantitative approach to identify the Grx1 regulatory signaling cascades at a subcellular resolution in response to oxidative stress. Results: A total of 1,291 proteins were identified to be differentially expressed, which were further categorized into a variety of signaling cascades including redox regulation, apoptosis, cell cycle control, glucose metabolism, protein synthesis, DNA damage response, protein folding, proteasome and others. Thirteen key signaling node molecules representing each pathway were verified. Notably, the subunits of proteasome complexes, which play a pivotal role in preventing cytotoxicity via the degradation of oxidized proteins, were highly enriched by Grx1. By data-dependent network analysis, we found global functional links among these signaling pathways which elucidate how Grx1 integrates the operation of these regulatory networks in an interconnected way for H2O2-induced response. Conclusion: Our data provide a system-wide insight into the function of Grx1 and provide a basis for further mechanistic investigation of Grx1 in antioxidant responses in the lens.

Purpose. To investigate the differences in axial length, corneal curvature, and corneal astigmatism with age in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and ectopia lentis. Methods. A retrospective case series study was conducted. MFS patients with ectopia lentis were divided into groups according to age. Axial length, corneal curvature, and corneal astigmatism were measured. PURPOSE:To evaluate the characteristics of the posterior corneal surface in patients with high myopia before cataract surgery. METHODS:We performed a cross-sectional study at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Corneal astigmatism and axial length were measured with a rotating Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam) and partial coherence interferometry (IOLMaster) in a high-myopia study group of 167 eyes (axial length ≥ 26 mm) and a control group of 150 eyes (axial length > 20 mm and < 25 mm). RESULTS:Total corneal astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism values were higher in the high-myopia group than in the control group. There was no significant difference in posterior corneal astigmatism between the high-myopia study group and the control group. In the study group, the mean posterior corneal astigmatism (range 0 - -0.9 diopters) was -0.29 diopters (D) ± 0.17 standard deviations (SD). The steep corneal meridian was aligned vertically (60°-120°) in 87.43% of eyes for the posterior corneal surface, and did not change with increasing age. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.235, p = 0.002) between posterior corneal astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism, especially when the anterior corneal surface showed with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism (r = 0.452, p = 0.000). There was a weak negative correlation between posterior corneal astigmatism and age (r = -0.15, p = 0.053) in the high-myopia group. Compared with total corneal astigmatism values, the anterior corneal measurements alone overestimated WTR astigmatism by a mean of 0.27 ± 0.18 D in 68.75% of eyes, underestimated against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism by a mean of 0.41 ± 0.28 D in 88.89% of eyes, and underestimated oblique astigmatism by a mean of 0.24 ± 0.13 D in 63.64% of eyes. CONCLUSIONS:Posterior corneal astigmatism decreased with age and remained as ATR astigmatism in most cases of high myopia. There was a significant correlation between posterior corneal astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism when anterior corneal astigmatism was WTR. If posterior corneal astigmatism is not accounted for when selecting toric intraocular lenses for high-myopia patients, the use of anterior corneal astigmatism measurements alone will lead to overestimation of WTR astigmatism and underestimation of ATR and oblique astigmatism.

To study the relationship between outdoor activity and risk of age-related cataract (ARC) in a rural population of Taizhou Eye Study (phrase 1 report).A population-based, cross-sectional study of 2006 eligible rural adults (≥45 years old) from Taizhou Eye Study was conducted from Jul. to Sep. 2012. Participants underwent detailed ophthalmologic examinations including uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), slit lamp and fundus examinations as well as questionnaires about previous outdoor activity and sunlight protection methods. ARC was recorded by LOCSⅢ classification system. The prevalence of cortical, nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract were assessed separately for the risk factors and its association with outdoor activity.Of all 2006 eligible participants, 883 (44.0%) adults were diagnosed with ARC. The prevalence rates of cortical, nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract per person were 41.4%, 30.4% and 1.5%, respectively. Women had a higher tendency of nuclear and cortical cataract than men (OR = 1.559, 95% CI 1.204-2.019 and OR = 1.862, 95% CI 1.456-2.380, respectively). Adults with high myopia had a higher prevalence of nuclear cataract than adults without that (OR = 2.528, 95% CI 1.055-6.062). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that age was risk factor of nuclear (OR = 1.190, 95% CI 1.167-1.213) and cortical (OR = 1.203, 95% CI 1.181-1.226) cataract; eyes with fundus diseases was risk factor of posterior subcapsular cataract (OR = 6.529, 95% CI 2.512-16.970). Outdoor activity was an independent risk factor of cortical cataract (OR = 1.043, 95% CI 1.004-1.083). The risk of cortical cataract increased 4.3% (95% CI 0.4%-8.3%) when outdoor activity time increased every one hour. Furthermore, the risk of cortical cataract increased 1.1% (95% CI 0.1%-2.0%) when cumulative UV-B exposure time increased every one year.Outdoor activity was an independent risk factor for cortical cataract, but was not risk factor for nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract. The risk of cortical cataract increased 4.3% when outdoor activity time increased every one hour. In addition, the risk of cortical cataract increased 1.1% (95% CI 0.1%-2.0%) when cumulative UV-B exposure time increased every one year.

Purpose To estimate the prevalence rates of cataract and cataract surgery in suburban Shanghai, China. Methods This population-based, cross-sectional study was carried out in Pujiang Town, Shanghai, China, using a random cluster sampling strategy. A total of 5846 participants (11,657 eyes) aged =65 years were enrolled. Detailed eye examinations included presenting visual acuity (VA), best-corrected VA, non-contact tonometry, measurement of ocular parameters using IOLMaster 700, slit-lamp assessment of lens opacities using the Lens Opacities Classification System III and dilated fundus evaluation. Results Cataract was present in 57.0% of participants (53.8% of eyes). Cortical, nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) were found in 41.3%, 41.0% and 12.6% of participants. Among participants with any cataract, VA was <20/40 in 32.5%. According to Global Burden of Disease Study visual impairment (VI) criteria, 52.5% of participants with PSC had VI, 4.9% were considered blind (VA <20/400) and 31.9% had moderate VI (VA =20/400 to <20/63). This rate was significantly greater than that in participants with cortical (32.0%) or nuclear (38.0%) cataract (P<0.05). Cataract surgery was performed in 8.1% of eyes (men, 3.1%; women, 5.0%) or 10.9% of participants (men, 4.2%; women, 6.7%). Conclusions The Pujiang Cataract Cohort Study has revealed the prevalence rates of cataract and cataract surgery among elderly individuals in suburban Shanghai, China. Although the frequency of cataract surgery has increased in China in recent decades, the high prevalence of cataract-related VI among older people suggests further attention to primary eyecare and medical awareness is necessary.
