Integrated superconducting spectrometers (ISSs) for wideband sub-mm astronomy utilise quasi-optical systems for coupling radiation from the telescope to the instrument. Misalignment in these systems is detrimental to the system performance. The common method of using an optical laser to align the quasi-optical components requires accurate alignment of the laser to the sub-mm beam coming from the instrument, which is not always guaranteed to a sufficient accuracy. We develop an alignment strategy for wideband ISSs directly utilising the sub-mm beam of the wideband ISS. The strategy should be applicable in both telescope and laboratory environments. Moreover, the strategy should deliver similar quality of the alignment across the spectral range of the wideband ISS. We measure misalignment in a quasi-optical system operating at sub-mm wavelengths using a novel phase and amplitude measurement scheme, capable of simultaneously measuring the complex beam patterns of a direct-detecting ISS across a harmonic range of frequencies. The direct detection nature of the MKID detectors in our device-under-test, DESHIMA 2.0, necessitates the use of this measurement scheme. Using geometrical optics, the measured misalignment, a mechanical hexapod, and an optimisation algorithm, we follow a numerical approach to optimise the positioning of corrective optics with respect to a given cost function. Laboratory measurements of the complex beam patterns are taken across a harmonic range between 205 and 391 GHz and simulated through a model of the ASTE telescope in order to assess the performance of the optimisation at the ASTE telescope. Laboratory measurements show that the optimised optical setup corrects for tilts and offsets of the sub-mm beam. Detector requirements for far infrared astronomy generally result in devices which exhibit a few-moded response to incident radiation. The sensitivity and spatial form of the individual modes to which such a detector is sensitive can be determined with knowledge of the complex valued cross-spectral density of the system, which we label the detector response function (DRF). A matrix representing the discretized cross-spectral density can be measured from the complex amplitudes of interference fringes generated by two identical sources as they are independently scanned through the field of view. We provide experimental verification of this technique using monochromatic THz beams generated by photomixers in which the relative phase is varied with fiber stretchers. Since the $^4$He dimer supports only one weakly bound state with an average interatomic distance much larger than the van der Waals length and no deeply bound states, $^4$He$_N$ clusters with $N>2$ are a paradigmatic model system with which to explore foundational concepts such as large $s$-wave scattering length universality, van der Waals universality, Efimov physics, and effective field theories. This work presents structural properties such as the pair and triple distribution functions, the hyperradial density, the probability to find the $N$th particle at a given distance from the center of mass of the other $N-1$ atoms, and selected contacts. The kinetic energy release, which can be measured via Coulomb explosion in dedicated size-selected molecular beam experiments -- at least for small $N$ -- , is also presented. The structural properties are determined for three different realistic $^4$He-$^4$He interaction potentials and contrasted with those for an effective low-energy potential model from the literature that reproduces the energies of $^4$He$_N$ clusters in the ground state for $N=2$ to $N=\infty$ at the $\gtrsim 95$~percent level with just four input parameters. The study is extended to unitarity (infinite $s$-wave scattering length) by artificially weakening the interaction potentials. In addition to contributing to the characterization of small bosonic helium quantum droplets, our study provides insights into the effective low-energy theory's predictability of various structural properties., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Integrated superconducting spectrometer (ISS) technology will enable ultra-wideband, integral-field spectroscopy for (sub)millimeter-wave astronomy, in particular, for uncovering the dust-obscured cosmic star formation and galaxy evolution over cosmic time. Here we present the development of DESHIMA 2.0, an ISS for ultra-wideband spectroscopy toward high-redshift galaxies. DESHIMA 2.0 is designed to observe the 220-440 GHz band in a single shot, corresponding to a redshift range of $z$=3.3-7.6 for the ionized carbon emission ([C II] 158 $\mu$m). The first-light experiment of DESHIMA 1.0, using the 332-377 GHz band, has shown an excellent agreement among the on-sky measurements, the lab measurements, and the design. As a successor to DESHIMA 1.0, we plan the commissioning and the scientific observation campaign of DESHIMA 2.0 on the ASTE 10-m telescope in 2023. Ongoing upgrades for the full octave-bandwidth system include the wideband 347-channel chip design and the wideband quasi-optical system. For efficient measurements, we also develop the observation strategy using the mechanical fast sky-position chopper and the sky-noise removal technique based on a novel data-scientific approach. Floquet spin chains have been a venue for understanding topological states of matter that are qualitatively different from their static counterparts by, for example, hosting $\pi$ edge modes that show stable period-doubled dynamics. However the stability of these edge modes to interactions has traditionally required the system to be many-body localized in order to suppress heating. In contrast, here we show that even in the absence of disorder, and in the presence of bulk heating, $\pi$ edge modes are long lived. Their lifetime is extracted from exact diagonalization and is found to be non-perturbative in the interaction strength. A tunneling estimate for the lifetime is obtained by mapping the stroboscopic time-evolution to dynamics of a single particle in Krylov subspace. In this subspace, the $\pi$ edge mode manifests as the quasi-stable edge mode of an inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model whose dimerization vanishes in the bulk of the Krylov chain.

Integrable Floquet spin chains are known to host strong zero and $\pi$ modes which are boundary operators that respectively commute and anticommute with the Floquet unitary generating stroboscopic time-evolution, in addition to anticommuting with a discrete symmetry of the Floquet unitary. Thus the existence of strong modes imply a characteristic pairing structure of the full spectrum. Weak interactions modify the strong modes to almost strong modes that almost commute or anticommute with the Floquet unitary. Manifestations of strong and almost strong modes are presented in two different Krylov subspaces. One is a Krylov subspace obtained from a Lanczos iteration that maps the time-evolution generated by the Floquet Hamiltonian onto dynamics of a single particle on a fictitious chain with nearest neighbor hopping. The second is a Krylov subspace obtained from the Arnoldi iteration that maps the time-evolution generated directly by the Floquet unitary onto dynamics of a single particle on a fictitious chain with longer range hopping. While the former Krylov subspace is sensitive to the branch of the logarithm of the Floquet unitary, the latter obtained from the Arnoldi scheme is not. The effective single particle models in the Krylov subspace are discussed, and the topological properties of the Krylov chain that ensure stable $0$ and $\pi$ modes at the boundaries are highlighted. The role of interactions is discussed. Expressions for the lifetime of the almost strong modes are derived in terms of the parameters of the Krylov subspace, and are compared with exact diagonalization.

Results are presented for the dynamics of an almost strong edge mode which is the quasi-stable Majorana edge mode occurring in non-integrable spin chains. The dynamics of the edge mode is studied using exact diagonalization, and compared with time-evolution with respect to an effective semi-infinite model in Krylov space obtained from the recursion method. The effective Krylov Hamiltonian is found to resemble a spatially inhomogeneous SSH model where the hopping amplitude increases linearly with distance into the bulk, typical of thermalizing systems, but also has a staggered or dimerized structure superimposed on it. The non-perturbatively long lifetime of the edge mode is shown to be due to this staggered structure which diminishes the effectiveness of the linearly growing hopping amplitude. On taking the continuum limit of the Krylov Hamiltonian, the edge mode is found to be equivalent to the quasi-stable mode of a Dirac Hamiltonian on a half line, with a mass which is non-zero over a finite distance, before terminating into a gapless metallic bulk. For astronomical instruments, accurate knowledge of the optical pointing and coupling are essential to characterize the alignment and performance of (sub-)systems prior to integration and deployment. Ideally, this requires the phase response of the optical system, which for direct (phase insensitive) detectors was not previously accessible. Here we show development of the phase sensitive complex beam pattern technique using a dual optical source heterodyne technique for a large field of view Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector camera at 350 GHz. Almost strong edge-mode operators arising at the boundaries of certain interacting 1D symmetry protected topological phases with \(Z_2\) symmetry have infinite temperature lifetimes that are non-perturbatively long in the integrability breaking terms, making them promising as bits for quantum information processing. We extract the lifetime of these edge-mode operators for small system sizes as well as in the thermodynamic limit. For the latter, a Lanczos scheme is employed to map the operator dynamics to a one dimensional tight-binding model of a single particle in Krylov space. We find this model to be that of a spatially inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with a hopping amplitude that increases away from the boundary, and a dimerization that decreases away from the boundary. We associate this dimerized or staggered structure with the existence of the almost strong mode. Thus the short time dynamics of the almost strong mode is that of the edge-mode of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, while the long time dynamics involves decay due to tunneling out of that mode, followed by chaotic operator spreading. We also show that competing scattering processes can lead to interference effects that can significantly enhance the lifetime.

We are developing an ultra-wideband spectroscopic instrument, DESHIMA (DEep Spectroscopic HIgh-redshift MApper), based on the technologies of an on-chip filter-bank and Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector (MKID) to investigate dusty star-burst galaxies in the distant universe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelength. An on-site experiment of DESHIMA was performed using the ASTE 10-m telescope. We established a responsivity model that converts frequency responses of the MKIDs to line-of-sight brightness temperature. We estimated two parameters of the responsivity model using a set of skydip data taken under various precipitable water vapor (PWV, 0.4-3.0 mm) conditions for each MKID. The line-of-sight brightness temperature of sky is estimated using an atmospheric transmission model and the PWVs. As a result, we obtain an average temperature calibration uncertainty of $1\sigma=4$%, which is smaller than other photometric biases. In addition, the average forward efficiency of 0.88 in our responsivity model is consistent with the value expected from the geometrical support structure of the telescope. We also estimate line-of-sight PWVs of each skydip observation using the frequency response of MKIDs, and confirm the consistency with PWVs reported by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physics for LTD-18 special issue

We present the design, fabrication and characterisation of a broadband leaky lens antenna for broadband, spectroscopic imaging applications. The antenna is designed for operation in the 300-900 GHz band. We integrate the antenna directly into an Al-NbTiN hybrid MKID to measure the beam pattern and absolute coupling efficiency at three frequency bands centred around 350, 650 and 850 GHz, covering the full antenna band. We find an aperture efficiency $\eta_{ap} \approx 0.4$ over the whole frequency band, limited by lens reflections. We find a good match with simulations for both the patterns and efficiency, demonstrating a 1:3 bandwidth in the sub-mm wavelength range for future on-chip spectrometers., Comment: Accepted for Publication at IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation

Ultra-wideband 3D imaging spectrometry in the millimeter-submillimeter (mm-submm) band is an essential tool for uncovering the dust-enshrouded portion of the cosmic history of star formation and galaxy evolution. However, it is challenging to scale up conventional coherent heterodyne receivers or free-space diffraction techniques to sufficient bandwidths ($\geq$1 octave) and numbers of spatial pixels (>$10^2$). Here we present the design and first astronomical spectra of an intrinsically scalable, integrated superconducting spectrometer, which covers 332-377 GHz with a spectral resolution of $F/\Delta F \sim 380$. It combines the multiplexing advantage of microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) with planar superconducting filters for dispersing the signal in a single, small superconducting integrated circuit. We demonstrate the two key applications for an instrument of this type: as an efficient redshift machine, and as a fast multi-line spectral mapper of extended areas. The line detection sensitivity is in excellent agreement with the instrument design and laboratory performance, reaching the atmospheric foreground photon noise limit on sky. The design can be scaled to bandwidths in excess of an octave, spectral resolution up to a few thousand and frequencies up to $\sim$1.1 THz. The miniature chip footprint of a few $\mathrm{cm^2}$ allows for compact multi-pixel spectral imagers, which would enable spectroscopic direct imaging and large volume spectroscopic surveys that are several orders of magnitude faster than what is currently possible., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy. Certain periodically driven quantum many-particle systems in one dimension are known to exhibit edge modes that are related to topological properties and lead to approximate degeneracies of the Floquet spectrum. A similar situation occurs in spin chains, where stable edge modes were shown to exist at all energies in certain integrable spin chains. Moreover, these edge modes were found to be remarkably stable to perturbations. Here we investigate the stability of edge modes in interacting, periodically driven, clean systems. We introduce a model that features edge modes that persist over times scales well in excess of the time needed for the bulk of the system to heat to infinite temperatures., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

Terahertz spectrometers with a wide instantaneous frequency coverage for passive remote sensing are enormously attractive for many terahertz applications, such as astronomy, atmospheric science and security. Here we demonstrate a wide-band terahertz spectrometer based on a single superconducting chip. The chip consists of an antenna coupled to a transmission line filterbank, with a microwave kinetic inductance detector behind each filter. Using frequency division multiplexing, all detectors are read-out simultaneously creating a wide-band spectrometer with an instantaneous bandwidth of 45 GHz centered around 350 GHz. The spectrometer has a spectral resolution of $F/\Delta F=380$ and reaches photon-noise limited sensitivity. We discuss the chip design and fabrication, as well as the system integration and testing. We confirm full system operation by the detection of an emission line spectrum of methanol gas. The proposed concept allows for spectroscopic radiation detection over large bandwidths and resolutions up to $F/\Delta F\sim1000$, all using a chip area of a few $\mathrm{cm^2}$.
