Objectives The satisfaction level of adult patients receiving drugs for atopic dermatitis and chronic urticaria is unclear. The objective of this multicenter study was to assess the satisfaction level of adult patients receiving treatment for allergic skin diseases, primarily atopic dermatitis and chronic urticaria. Methods We developed a self‐administered questionnaire with multiple‐choice questions on patient characteristics, quality of life (QOL), and Abbreviated Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM‐9). We surveyed 302 patients receiving dermatological treatment. Results The global satisfaction of patients (TSQM‐9) was lower for atopic dermatitis treatment compared with that for chronic urticaria. For atopic dermatitis, dupilumab had higher scores for effectiveness and global satisfaction, whereas topical tacrolimus and moisturizers had higher scores for convenience. For chronic urticaria, omalizumab had higher scores for effectiveness and global satisfaction, while antihistamines had a higher score for convenience. The Dermatology Life Quality Index was significantly associated with treatment effectiveness and global satisfaction, and patient satisfaction improved with the corresponding improvement in the QOL. For atopic dermatitis, satisfaction with dupilumab was higher than that with conventional standard therapy, after the confounding factors were eliminated. However, the same trend was not observed for chronic spontaneous urticaria. Conclusions The satisfaction of the effectiveness for the biologic agents was higher, compared to that with conventional standard therapy. Treatment with biologics is worth exploring for patients who are not satisfied with their existing treatments.

Individuals who used skin‐whitening cosmetics (quasi‐drugs) containing 2% rhododendrol‐containing agents, developed leukoderma at a higher frequency than those who have used other skin‐whitening cosmetics. The Rhododenol Research Team (RD‐Team) was formed and commissioned by Kanebo Cosmetics Inc. to conduct research in treatments of rhododendrol‐induced leukoderma (RDL), to evaluate effective treatment options from a medical standpoint, and provide information to a wide range of people. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of various treatments for RDL from a medical perspective, based on the information published in the literature as original or review articles. We searched the PubMed (international) and the Igaku Chuo Zasshi (ICHUSHI) (Japanese) databases using the keywords “Rhododenol” and “rhododendrol”, for articles published between July 2013 and November 2020. We discuss the main clinical findings and treatments (topical, oral, phototherapy, and surgical) of this condition based on the literature review. We found that ultraviolet light therapy is the most effective treatment for RDL. We have also summarized reports of the efficacy of oral vitamin D3 in RDL. A topical prostaglandin derivative has been reported in a new study to be effective. We have provided guidance for patients using self‐tanning and skin‐whitening agents to improve their quality of life. Finally, we have highlighted the importance of providing patients with information on contact dermatitis and instructing them to discontinue product use immediately if they develop any symptoms of contact dermatitis while using skin‐whitening agents.

Background The nature of the stress experienced by adult atopic dermatitis (AD) patients is not fully understood. Objectives We investigated the experience of stress in these patients and their coping methods using a questionnaire. Methods Fifty‐one AD patients under the care of the Department of Dermatology at Shimane University Hospital and 50 AD patients under the care of the Department of Dermatology at Sapporo Medical University Hospital were surveyed. The Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) inventory was used to examine coping. Results The most common cause of stress associated with AD was work, followed by the presence of allergy symptoms and being ill. The patients reported using positive coping methods such as self‐distraction and humor, and negative coping methods such as behavioral disengagement and self‐blame. Women used coping methods significantly more often than men, and patients aged 30 years and older used alcohol as a coping strategy more often than younger patients. Patients with severe conditions used coping methods less frequently. A group that experienced stress often used positive reframing less frequently, but more often used methods such as emotional support, substance use, behavioral disengagement, and self‐blame. Conclusions We observed differences in stress coping based on gender, age, severity of AD symptoms, severity of stress, and how stress was experienced, which highlights the importance of dealing with stress in ways that take the AD patient's characteristics into consideration.

A small proportion of individuals utilizing cosmetics containing rhododendrol developed leukoderma with various pathological conditions, in some cases indistinguishable from vitiligo. In this review, we investigate and evaluate the major considerations for developing rhododendrol‐induced leukoderma based on data from original or review articles published in the literature to provide a wide range of information regarding the pathophysiology, mechanisms, risk evaluation, and possible mechanism‐based treatments. We compile and discuss the latest information, including data related to the cytotoxicity of rhododendrol, cytoprotective functions, and involvement of the immune system, and consider the possibility of novel treatments based on the differences between individual patients and on the mechanism underlying the onset of the condition. Understanding the pathophysiology of rhododendrol‐induced leukoderma helps not only elucidate the mechanisms of non‐segmental vitiligo onset and progression, but also suggests prevention and treatment.

Cholinergic urticaria (CholU) decreases affected individuals' quality of life because they must avoid stimuli including exercise and hot bathing. Although case reports have indicated that regular sweating activities are effective for CholU with hypohidrosis, little evidence is available. This retrospective medical record review examined CholU patients who received any form of treatment at our hospital. Twenty-seven cases (78% men; median age 22 years, range 12-70 years) were analyzed. Fourteen (52%) patients had acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis (AIGA). Among the 12 patients receiving sweating therapy (4 with, 8 without AIGA), improvement of symptoms was confirmed in 11 (92%; sweating therapy alone: n = 5, with H1 blocker: n = 5, with steroid pulse: n = 1) including 8 (67%) showing complete response (CR). In this sweating-therapy group, CR was achieved by six of the eight (75%) patients without AIGA and two of the four (50%) patients with AIGA. Among the 15 patients without sweating therapy, symptom improvement was observed in 9 (60%; steroid pulse: n = 7, H1 blocker: n = 2) including 1 (7%) achieving CR. Sweating therapy was safely undertaken except in one case in which the patient showed angioedema and anaphylaxis. Regular sweating activities could be a potential therapeutic option for CholU patients.

PURPOSE: Diabetic patients with severe diabetic neuropathy often have hypoesthesia and numbness. This study evaluated foot self-care behavior according to severity of diabetic neuropathy. METHODS: We used a hand-held nerve conduction test device DPN check (HDN-1000, Omron) to evaluate severity of diabetic neuropathy. Foot self-care was evaluated using the Japanese SDSCA (the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities measure). Foot self-care comprised visual inspection, washing, wiping interdigital areas, and checking shoes, and was scored according to the number of days self-care which was performed in the previous week. RESULTS: The study evaluated 103 diabetic patients (age: 65.7 years, diabetes duration: 13.9 years, HbA1c: 7.3%). Total scores (out of 28 points) for self-care behavior according to neuropathy severity were 11.8 (Normal: n = 54), 10.6 (Mild: n = 27), 13.3 (Moderate: n = 17), and 10.8 (Severe: n = 5). Foot self-care scores were low in all groups, with particularly low scores in those with severe neuropathy. However, no statistically significant differences were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Foot self-care is essential in diabetes because lesions are more likely to occur in severe neuropathy. Living alone and the presence of recurrent foot lesions are associated with poor survival prognosis. Accordingly, foot-care intervention must take neuropathy severity and lifestyle factors into account. The severity of diabetic neuropathy must be determined and foot-care intervention should take lifestyle factors into account.

Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that often cannot be completely controlled by modern medicine. Since multiple factors are intricately involved in the pathogenesis of AD, wide-ranging research is required for further advancement of AD treatment. Epidermal keratinocytes are the forefront to the external environment and play a pivotal role in the initiation of immune reaction against exogenous invasion. Objective Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is a keratinocyte-derived cytokine that induces differentiation and activation of type 2 helper T cells and innate lymphoid cells, cardinal effectors in pathophysiology of AD. We previously reported that ΔNp63, a p53-related molecule, regulates the expression of TSLP receptors and suggested the entity of a potential TSLP autocrine loop in the AD epidermis. In this study, we further explored the significance of p53 family transcription factors in TSLP production from human keratinocytes. Method Expression profile of p73, a p53-related molecule, was evaluated in human AD tissue by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the function of p73 in producing TSLP was investigated with in vitro cultured keratinocytes via molecular biological analysis. Results ΔNp73 was abundantly expressed in the AD epidermis and increased the release of TSLP via NF-κB activation. Furthermore, the Toll-like receptor 3 signal enhanced ΔNp73 expression and thereby induced TSLP expression. Conclusion Our results indicate that ΔNp73 is an additional participant in the mechanism of TSLP production. Amending the aberrant state of keratinocytes, represented by overexpression of ΔNp73, can be a novel therapeutic target of AD.

Cytokeratin 19 fragment 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) has been used as a tumor marker for several malignancies. However, to date, no studies have assessed whether CYFRA 21-1 could be a useful marker for extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). The present study aimed to evaluate the significance of CYFRA 21-1 as a serum tumor marker for EMPD progression. Concentrations of serum CYFRA 21-1 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in 13 cases of EMPD were measured prior to undergoing treatment at Sapporo Medical University Hospital from January 2014 to May 2016. Four of the 13 patients had lymph node metastases at diagnosis, but none had distant metastases. Immunohistochemistry indicated that all 13 primary tumors and four metastatic tumors in lymph nodes were positive for cytokeratin 19. Although none of the 13 patients showed high serum CEA levels, six patients (46.2%) had elevated serum CYFRA 21-1. Furthermore, CYFRA 21-1 was reduced in association with post-treatment tumor reduction in all six patients. Among these six patients, four developed recurrence and metastasis during the follow-up period. CYFRA 21-1 was re-elevated in all four of these patients; however, serum CEA was elevated only in the patient with distant metastasis. These results suggest that CYFRA 21-1 is more sensitive compared with CEA, and can be useful as a tumor marker for evaluating tumor progression and treatment efficacy in patients with EMPD.

An ingredient of fruit polyphenol, resveratrol, is known to have an inhibitory effect on melanogenesis. In order to examine the functional differences between resveratrol and other fruit polyphenols, we compared biochemical effects of a resveratrol-free polyphenol, flavanol-rich lychee fruit extract (FRLFE), with other phenolic compounds including resveratrol. FRLFE as well as hydroquinone and resveratrol suppressed growth of B16F1 melanoma cells more significantly than rhododendrol or arbutin. Resveratrol suppressed mushroom tyrosinase at the lowest concentration (23.0 μmol/L) among the compounds tested. FRLFE and hydroquinone suppressed tyrosinase at almost the same concentration (half maximal inhibitory concentration [IC50 ], 83.5 and 94.6 μmol/L, respectively), which was higher than rhododendrol, ascorbic acid and arbutin (IC50 , 245, 345 and 421 μmol/L, respectively). Western blot analysis revealed that although resveratrol decreased expressions of tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1, FRLFE did not affect their expressions. Both FRLFE and resveratrol suppressed antimycin A-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in melanocytic cells. Resveratrol-mediated ROS suppression was inhibited by nicotinamide, a SIRT1 inhibitor. However, FRLFE-mediated suppression was not affected by nicotinamide. Moreover, FRLFE directly decreased superoxide in vitro, as detected by superoxide dismutase-like scavenging activity assay. These results suggest that FRLFE can protect melanocytes from cytotoxicity caused by an excess amount of melanin and ROS in a different manner from resveratrol.

Aim To clarify the relationship between programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and clinicopathological variables. Methods We examined PD-L1 expression in tumor cells (TCs) and tumor infiltrating immune cells (ICs) in 46 cases of cSCC by immunohistochemistry. In each case, we employed two methods-intensity and proportion scores-to evaluate PD-L1 expression in TCs. For the evaluation of PD-L1 expression in ICs, only the proportion score was used. Association between PD-L1 expression and clinicopathological variables was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Results High intensity scores in TCs were observed in 18 of the 46 cases (39.1%) and low intensity scores were observed in 28 cases (60.9%). Applying the proportions, using cut-off values of ≥1% and 50%, positive scores in TCs were observed in 36 (78.3%) and 20 cases (43.5%), respectively. PD-L1-positive ICs were observed in 29 (63%) and seven cases (15.2%), using cut-off values of ≥1% and 10%, respectively. The high intensity scores in TCs correlated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.008) and female gender (P = 0.017), although positive proportions in TCs or ICs were not significantly related to lymph node metastasis. A multivariate analysis showed that high intensity of PD-L1 expression in TCs was an independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis. Conclusions The results suggested that high intensity of PD-L1 expression in TCs is associated with lymph node metastasis in cSCC.

Background Rhododendrol (RD), a skin-whitening agent, is believed to be associated with cases of cosmetics-related leukoderma that have been reported in Japan. Recently, we have shown that RD is catalyzed by tyrosinase to produce putative toxic metabolites RD-catechol and RD-cyclic catechol. Objective To examine the cytotoxicity and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in melanocytic cells by RD and its metabolic products. Methods The growth inhibitory effect of RD or its metabolite on the normal human epidermal melanocyte (NHEM) and B16F1 cells was assessed by cell counting or WST assay. ROS production was detected by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy after cells were treated with 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein and RD or its metabolite. Results Growth of NHEM derived from African American (NHEMb) and B16F1 cells was suppressed by 300 μM or more RD. Growth inhibitory activity of RD (IC50 of B16F1: 671 μM) was weaker than hydroquinone (IC50 of B16F1: 28.3 μM) or resveratrol (IC50 of B16F1: 27.1 μM). Flow cytometric analysis detected ROS production in the NHEMb and B16F1 cells exposed to RD. However, neither RD nor H 2 O 2 increased the subG1 fraction of these melanocytic cells. RD-catechol and RD-cyclic catechol inhibited growth of NHEMb and B16F1 cells much more strongly than did RD. RD-catechol, as well as RD, produced ROS detected by both flow cytometry and immunostaining, while RD-cyclic catechol produced a hardly detectable amount of ROS in B16F1 cells. Conclusions These results suggest that RD exerts the cytotoxicity in melanocytic cells through its oxidative metabolites and that ROS plays a role in RD-mediated cytotoxicity.

We examined dermoscopic features of three cases of extraocular sebaceous carcinoma and reviewed the literatures. The yellowish structures, polymorphous vessels and ulceration were common findings in our cases and all cases of the previous reports. The appearance of whitish-pink areas has not been described previously. Our results suggested that the combination of four dermoscopic features, whitish-pink areas, yellowish structures, polymorphous vessels and ulceration might be distinctive in extraocular sebaceous carcinoma.

There have been many reported studies regarding the prevalence of childhood atopic dermatitis in Asia. The first large-scale worldwide investigation was the ISAAC Phase I study reported by Williams et al., who reported that the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in Asian countries, except for Japan, is lower than that of European countries. Moreover, they showed that symptoms of atopic eczema exhibit wide variations in prevalence both within and between countries inhabited by similar ethnic groups; they thus suggested that environmental factors may be critical for disease expression. These factors may be partially explained by “hygiene hypothesis,” which suggests that infections, especially during childhood, can protect against allergic diseases. This indicates that the clean environment in developed countries promotes the increase of allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis.

Our purpose is to clarify the physiological role of leptin in hair cycle as leptin reportedly causes activation of Stat3, which is indispensable for hair cycling. While hair follicles in dorsal skin of 5-week-old C57/BL6 mice had progressed to late anagen phase, those in dorsal skin of 5-week-old leptin receptor deficient db/db mice remained in the first telogen and later entered the anagen at postnatal day 40, indicating that deficiency in leptin receptor signalling delayed the second hair cycle progression. Next, we shaved dorsal hairs on wild-type mice at postnatal 7 weeks and injected skin with mouse leptin or a mock. After 20 days, although mock injection showed no effect, hair growth occurred around leptin injection area. Human leptin fragment (aa22-56) had similar effects. Although the hair cycle of ob/ob mice was similar to that of wild-type mice, injection of mouse leptin on ob/ob mice at postnatal 7 weeks induced anagen transition. Immunohistochemically, leptin is expressed in hair follicles from catagen to early anagen in wild-type mice, suggesting that leptin is an anagen inducer in vivo. Phosphorylation of Erk, Jak2 and Stat3 in human keratinocytes was stimulated by leptin and leptin fragment. In addition, RT-PCR and ELISA showed that the production of leptin by human dermal papilla cells increased under hypoxic condition, suggesting that hypoxia in catagen/telogen phase promotes leptin production, preparing for entry into the next anagen. In conclusion, leptin, a well-known adipokine, acts as an anagen inducer and represents a new player in hair biology.

Rhododendrol-induced leukoderma is an acquired depigmentation that develops mainly at the contact site after repeated use of skin-whitening cosmetics containing rhododendrol. In most cases, cessation of further depigmentation or occurrence of repigmentation is observed after discontinuing the use of cosmetics. However, some patients develop vitiligo vulgaris through the spread of depigmentation into the non-exposed areas. Our study aims to investigate the patient-specific factors that may affect the extent of depigmentation or repigmentation, as well as development of vitiligo vulgaris. The degree of depigmentation of the face, neck and hands where exposed to rhododendrol was scored using photographs over time. The relationships between depigmentation score at first visit/improvement rate of depigmentation score and patient demographics were evaluated and three important clinical observations were made. First, repigmentation of the face was superior compared with that of the hands and neck, suggesting a possible role for the migration and differentiation of melanocyte stem cells from hair follicles, as a mechanism of repigmentation. Second, the intensity of rhododendrol exposure did not contribute to differences in the severity of depigmentation. This suggested a possibility of underlying genetic susceptibility to melanocyte cytotoxicity or immune reaction. Third, depigmentation score at first visit and past history of atopic dermatitis were significantly high in patients who developed vitiligo vulgaris. This suggested that severe chemical damage of melanocytes by rhododendrol leads to a higher risk of developing vitiligo vulgaris through the possible involvement of an immune reaction. These clinical observations may help to further understand the pathogenesis of rhododendrol-induced leukoderma.

A 51-year-old man had been followed up for approximately 10 years at our clinic for persistent itchy eczematous lesions on his limbs and trunk. At the first visit, physical examination revealed itchy lichenificated and eczematous eruptions and many pruriginous papules over his entire body. Laboratory data showed remarkably high levels of immunoglobulin E (20,000 IU/mL). He was diagnosed as having severe atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical treatment with a potent corticosteroid (class I-II) did not significantly decrease the eruptions and occasional administration of a systemic corticosteroid elicited only a subtle response. The pruriginous lesions did not respond at all to topical or systemic corticosteroids. We used semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction to examine the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR)alpha and GRbeta mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of this patient and compared those with six other patients with AD and three normal controls. As a result, the expression of GRalpha was remarkably decreased compared to normal controls and the other AD patients. Therefore, his poor response to corticosteroid was at least partially caused by this GRalpha decrease in the PBMC.

60歳台, 男性。20年前から右踵部に拇指頭大の黒色の色素斑を認めていた。3年前に徐々に拡大してきたため, 近医にて部分生検を施行, 病理組織からlentigo simplexと診断されていた。経過をみていたところ, 皮疹の拡大と色の濃淡を認めてきた。初診時, 右踵部に70×40 mmの不整形の色素斑を認めた。境界は不明瞭で, 色調の濃淡がみられた。ダーモスコピーではparallel ridge patternとdepigmentationを認めた。悪性黒色腫が疑われ全切除生検を行った。臨床所見と病理所見よりacral lentiginous melanoma in situと診断した。前医の生検の時点で悪性黒色腫を生じていたのか, あるいは生検後に生じたのかは不明であった。しかし, 部分生検の所見がその病変全体の状態を反映しているとは限らないことから, 悪性黒色腫が疑われる症例では可能な限り全切除生検が望ましいと考えられた。

Carboxy-terminal Src kinase (Csk) is a negative regulator of Src family kinases, which play pivotal roles in controlling cell adhesion, migration, and cancer progression. To elucidate the in vivo role of Csk in epithelial tissues, we conditionally inactivated Csk in squamous epithelia using the keratin-5 promoter/Cre-loxP system in mice. The mutant mice developed apparent defects in the skin, esophagus, and forestomach, with concomitant hyperplasia and chronic inflammation. Histology of the mutant epidermis revealed impaired cell-cell adhesion in basal cell layers. Analysis of primary keratinocytes showed that the defective cell-cell adhesion was caused by cytoskeletal remodeling via activation of the Rac1 pathway. Mutant keratinocytes also showed elevated expression of mesenchymal proteins, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha. Inhibition of the expression of TNF-alpha and MMP9 by the anti-inflammatory reagent FK506 could cure the epidermal hyperplasia, suggesting a causal link between inflammation and epidermal hyperplasia. These observations demonstrate that the Src/Csk circuit plays crucial roles in development and maintenance of epithelia by controlling cytoskeletal organization as well as phenotypic conversion linked to inflammatory events.

Background We report a case of an urticarial reaction after drinking alcohol beverages. The patient was a 47-year-old man suffering urticarial and anaphylactoid reaction to alcohol for two years. These reactions were observed at every alcohol beverages intake. Case Summary We performed a prick test with diluted ethanol, alcohol beverages and their metabolites (acetaldehyde, acetic acid). Only acetic acid showed a positive result. Oral challenge test with diluted-ethanol caused pruritus and swelling of his lips. An oral challenge test with 8% diluted Shochu (Japanese distilled alcohol from rice or wheat) caused wheals on his upper back. Discussion Only acetic acid, a metabolite of alcohol, induced a positive prick test in the patient with alcohol-induced urticaria. This result was not observed in normal volunteers. An oral challenge test with diluted-alcohol or Shochu showed a positive wheal reaction in a dose dependent-manner which suggests that urticaria seen in this patient might be induced by alcohol-intolerance. However possible allergic reaction to acetaldehyde could not be excluded.

Background: Since focal tonsillar infections are often associated with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), provocation tests have been performed for preoperative evaluation of tonsillectomy. However, these tests have not been fully established. Objectives: To introduce a more sensitive operative indication for tonsillectomy to the patients with PPP, we have monitored the temperature after provocation tests at palmoplantar sites, as measured by thermography, and we hypothesized that this methodology may lead to a more sensitive marker for tonsillectomy. Methods: Twenty-two PPP patients with/without clinical tonsillitis were included in this study. After mechanical tonsillar massage, using infrared thermography, we have monitored the surface temperature at palmoplantar sites of 22 patients with PPP, five chronic tonsillitis patients without PPP, and four healthy controls, to compare the findings with the skin lesional outcome after tonsillectomy. Results: There was a significant relationship between the effects of tonsillectomy and the results of provocation tests assessed by thermography. The sensitivity, specificity, and efficiency of the provocation tests with thermography of detecting a favorable outcome of tonsillectomy were 75.0, 83.3, and 77.3%, respectively, while those of the provocation tests as estimated with the conventional criteria were 37.5, 83.3, and 50.0%, respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggest that a new indicator using non-invasive thermography for the provocation tests is useful in predicting the effects of tonsillectomy for PPP.

In the skin lesions of atopic dermatitis (AD), keratinocytes release large quantities of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), causing unfavorable inflammation along with skin damage. Nevertheless, how TSLP influences keratinocytes themselves is still unknown. In this study, we showed that ΔNp63, a p53-homologue, predominantly expressed in keratinocytes regulated the receptor complex of TSLP, which determines susceptibility to self-derived TSLP. Expression of TSLP receptors in skin tissues and keratinocytes was assessed by immunohistochemistry and quantitative RT-PCR, and in vitro studies were also performed to examine the functional relevance of ΔNp63 in the expression of TSLP receptors and the constituting autocrine and/or paracrine pathway of TSLP under the condition of stimuli to innate receptors sensing cell damage. The results showed that normal keratinocytes in the upper epidermis preferentially expressed TSLP receptors and conversely lacked ΔNp63, which has an inhibitory effect on the expression of TSLP receptors. Interestingly, the epidermis of AD lesions was found to abundantly contain keratinocytes with low or undetectable levels of ΔNp63 (ΔNp63(lo/-)). Moreover, in the absence of ΔNp63, keratinocytes readily presented TSLP and other cytokines by stimuli through Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3). Together with the evidence that extrinsic TSLP itself augments TSLP production by keratinocytes without ΔNp63, the results indicate that ΔNp63(lo/-) keratinocytes generate TSLP through a putative autocrine and/or paracrine pathway upon TLR3 stimulation within AD lesions, since moieties of damaged cells and pathogens stimulate TLR3.

We describe a case of granuloma annulare (GA) associated with Sjogren's syndrome (SS) in a 69-year-old woman. She complained of erythematous plaques on the left forearm and neck in addition to dry eyes and mouth. The laboratory and clinical findings also fulfilled the criteria for diagnosis of SS. Histopathological examination revealed the features of interstitial type GA. It is not rare that granulomatous diseases are associated with autoimmune diseases. This case indicated that granulomatous diseases and SS are closely related and that GA should be recognized as a cutaneous manifestation associated with autoimmune diseases, including SS.
