CR chondrites are a group of car-bonaceous chondrites with well-preserved records of formation of their components in the solar nebula. The CR chondrites have undergone a wide range of aqueous alteration from nearly anhydrous (CR2.8 or CR3.0) to extensive recrystallization of primary minerals, including replacement of coarse-grained silicates in chondrules (CR2.0). At the same time, CRs have experienced only minor thermal metamorphism except for rare CR6 samples. Identifying minimally altered CR chondrites is a priority because they preserve (1) relatively pristine records of the solar nebula and (2) minerals and textures at the beginning stages of aqueous alteration. Here we report the petrologic characteristics of Y-791498 and A-881828 as the least aqueously altered CR chondrites in the Japanese NIPR meteorite collection. Previous studies have shown that fine-grained rims on chondrules are indicators of incipient alteration of primitive CR chondrites, there-fore we focus on rims around chondrules in the two meteorites.

CR chondrites are the group of carbonaceous chondrites that best preserve records of formation of their components in the solar nebula. Although they are affected by aqueous alteration, many chondrules and CAIs are well-preserved, suggesting they have experienced little thermal metamorphism. We have been investigating the petrologic variations among the CR chondrites in the NIPR Antarctic meteorite collection. We focused particular attention on the petrology of amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) in order to understand secondary alteration on the CR chondrite parent body. AOAs are composed of fine-grained forsteritic olivine and refractory minerals formed by condensation in the solar nebula, and can be used as sensitive indicators of secondary alteration processes.

Geophysics - Abstract
Amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) are important components of carbonaceous chondrites that are interpreted as solar nebula condensates, and can be used as sensitive indicators of metamorphic or alteration processes. We have been investigating a set of Antarctic CR chondrites from the Japanese-NIPR collection in order to study variations within the CRs in general and their AOAs in particular. Main goals are to identify variations in conditions of nebular condensation, parent body effects and terrestrial weathering.

CR chondrites are a group of primitive carbonaceous chondrites that preserve nebular records of the formation conditions of their components. We have been investigating a set of Antarctic CR chondrites from the Japanese-NIPR collection in order to study variations within this group. During our study, we have found an AOA that encloses an ultrarefractory (UR) CAI in Yamato-793261 (Y-793261). UR CAIs are rare in carbonaceous chondrites, and only three UR CAIs in AOAs have been identified so far. UR CAIs can provide information on crystallization processes at very high temperatures in the solar nebula. Here we describe the petrology of Y-793261, and preliminary results on this newly discovered AOA enclosing a UR CAI.

Geophysics - Abstract
Amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) are important refractory components of carbonaceous chondrites and have been interpreted to represent solar nebular condensates that experienced high-temperature annealing, but largely escaped melting. In addition, because AOAs in primitive chondrites are composed of fine-grained minerals (forsterite, anorthite, spinel) that are easily modified during post crystallization alteration, the mineralogy of AOAs can be used as a sensitive indicator of metamorphic or alteration processes. AOAs in CR chondrites are particularly important because they show little evidence for secondary alteration. In addition, some CR AOAs contain Mn-enriched forsterite (aka low-iron, Mn-enriched or LIME olivine), which is an indicator of nebular formation conditions. Here we report preliminary results of the mineralogy and petrology of AOAs in Antarctic CR chondrites, and compare them to those in other carbonaceous chondrites.

In Renazzo-like carbonaceous (CR) chondrites, abundant original Fe,Ni-metal is preserved in chrondules, but the matrix is characterized by fine-grained magnetite with phyllosilicate. This combination of reduced Fe in chrodrules with oxidized Fe and phyllosilicate in the matrix has been attributed to aqueous alteration of matrix at relatively low temperatures.

Background: Experimental and clinical data suggest that reducing inflammation without affecting lipid levels may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Yet, the inflammatory hypothesis of atherothrombosis has remained unproved. Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial of canakinumab, a therapeutic monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-1β, involving 10,061 patients with previous myocardial infarction and a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level of 2 mg or more per liter. The trial compared three doses of canakinumab (50 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg, administered subcutaneously every 3 months) with placebo. The primary efficacy end point was nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or cardiovascular death. RESULTS: At 48 months, the median reduction from baseline in the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level was 26 percentage points greater in the group that received the 50-mg dose of canakinumab, 37 percentage points greater in the 150-mg group, and 41 percentage points greater in the 300-mg group than in the placebo group. Canakinumab did not reduce lipid levels from baseline. At a median follow-up of 3.7 years, the incidence rate for the primary end point was 4.50 events per 100 person-years in the placebo group, 4.11 events per 100 person-years in the 50-mg group, 3.86 events per 100 person-years in the 150-mg group, and 3.90 events per 100 person-years in the 300-mg group. The hazard ratios as compared with placebo were as follows: in the 50-mg group, 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80 to 1.07; P = 0.30); in the 150-mg group, 0.85 (95% CI, 0.74 to 0.98; P = 0.021); and in the 300-mg group, 0.86 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.99; P = 0.031). The 150-mg dose, but not the other doses, met the prespecified multiplicity-adjusted threshold for statistical significance for the primary end point and the secondary end point that additionally included hospitalization for unstable angina that led to urgent revascularization (hazard ratio vs. placebo, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.95; P = 0.005). Canakinumab was associated with a higher incidence of fatal infection than was placebo. There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio for all canakinumab doses vs. placebo, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.06; P = 0.31). Conclusions: Antiinflammatory therapy targeting the interleukin-1β innate immunity pathway with canakinumab at a dose of 150 mg every 3 months led to a significantly lower rate of recurrent cardiovascular events than placebo, independent of lipid-level lowering. Introduction: The mineralogy, petrology and chemical properties of the samples collected from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft show that the samples correspond to CI meteorites not affected by terrestrial weathering (e.g., [1,2]). Our analysis using SR-based X-ray nanotomography (XnCT) is also consistent CI meteorites [3]. Here we report the morphologies of major mineral phases in 3D to discuss their crystallization conditions in aqueous alteration together with their crystallization sequence based on their textures. Methods: We examined 75 particles (10 ~ 180 μm in apparent size) by XnCT at BL47XU of SPring-8 [3]. Most of them were imaged by DET-SIXM method combined with absorption and phase-shift tomography to discriminate mineral phases with the voxel size of 50 ~ 110 nm, their Mg# and densities. Some samples were imaged by absorption tomography with higher resolution (voxel size: 15 ~ 18 nm). Results and Discussion: The matrix of analyzed particles is mainly composed of Mg-rich phyllosilicates (serpentine and saponite, 82 vol.%) with different features (fine to coarse aggregates, Mg# = 0.75 ~ 0.92 (mean: 0.83± 0.04), density = 1.2 ~ 2.1 (mean: 1.7±0.26) g/cm³), IOMs (0.7 vol.%) and voids (12 vol.%). The major minerals in the matrix are magnetite (2.5 vol.%), Fe(-Ni)S (1.4 vol.%; pyrrhotite >> pentlandite), dolomite (1.2 vol.%), breunnerite and apatite (0.2 vol.%). The data here should show the representative feature of Ryugu samples through the 3D analysis of abundant particles without selection bias but may have large uncertainties for the modal abundance in particular IOMs due to insufficient spatial resolution and thresholding of the XnCT analysis. 3D morphologies. Magnetite has a variety of morphology (typically a few ~ 10 μm); spherulite and its aggregate, framboid composed of mono-dispersed grains of a few 100s nm ~ a few μm, plaquette, large equant grains composed of {311} and elongated grains. Transitional morphologies were also observed. Whiskers (~0.5 μm thick and 20 μm long) and cube (~1 μm) are rarely present as well. In contrast, pyrrhotite is mostly separated hexagonal plates ({100} and {001} in the hexagonal setting) with different size (longest length: <1 ~ 60 μm). The width/length ratio ranges from 0.06 to 0.98 (mean: 0.43±0.20) and is independent of the size. Pentlandite (<~5 μm) is embedded in pyrrhotite or present as fragmented grains in the matrix. Nano-sized pyrrhotite and pentlandite grains were also observed in some matrix by TEM [4] although their morphologies were not clearly known. Dolomite is usually present as aggregates of subhedral ~ euhedral grains (<1 ~ 50 μm). Some are euhedral grains of flattened rhombohedron probably composed of {101}. Separated breunnerite grains (30 ~ 100 μm) are thin rhombohedron of possibly {012}. Apatite is usually present as aggregates of subhedral ~ euhedral grains (<1 ~ 50 μm) and one hexagonal prism of {100} (or {110}) and {001} was observed. Crystallization sequence. The crystallization sequence of the major minerals estimated based on inclusions and their relative enclosing relations, which can be easily recognized in 3D, is follows; magnetite → Fe(-Ni)S (pentlandite → pyrrhotite) → apatite → dolomite/breunnerite. For magnetite, the sequence is likely spherulitic → plaquette/framboidal (from fine to coarse) → equant/elongated. This indicates that magnetite crystallization condition changed from high to low supersaturations. The overall sequence can be explained by aqueous alteration of primitive solar materials such as GEMS-like materials. The high supersaturation for magnetite was probably caused by abrupt dissolution of relatively Fe0 or FeO-rich amorphous silicates followed by precipitation of magnetite and Mg-rich phyllosilicates. In contrast, pyrrhotite hexagonal plates with different size might be formed by dissolution and reprecipitation from original Fe(-Ni)S nanograins at relatively low supersaturation. Dolomite and apatite having equilibrium shapes [5,6] indicate that they precipitated at relatively low supersaturations in the late stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CARBONACEOUS chondrites (Meteorites) ,MAGNETITE ,CHONDRITES ,SOLAR system ,ASTEROIDS - Abstract
Introduction: Between June 2018 and November 2019, the JAXA Hayabusa2 spacecraft made detailed observations and measurements of the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu. Two samples were collected and returned to Earth on 6th December 2020: a surface sample stored in Chamber A of the return capsule and a sub-surface sample in Chamber C. Near-IR orbital spectroscopic data indicated that Ryugu comprised material "similar to thermally and/or shockmetamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites" [1], with a possible match to the CY (Yamato-type) chondrites [2]. In contrast, initial studies at the JAXA ISAS facility suggested that the samples were "most similar to CI chondrites" [3]. Resolving these contradictory classifications requires detailed sample analysis studies. Here we present high precision O-isotopic results undertaken as part of Phase2 Kochi curation studies [4]. Ryugu particles show evidence of pervasive asteroidal aqueous alteration [4, 5], with only minor preservation of relict primary silicates [6]. Methods: Seven sub-samples from four of the particles allocated to Kochi curation were analysed by laser fluorination [7]. Three particles were from Chamber C (C0014,21; C0068,21; C0087,2) and one from Chamber A (A0098, 2). Orgueil (CI) (n=7) and Y-82162 (CY) (n=7) were analysed for comparison purposes. Sample transport, loading and analysis techniques employed ensured that the particles were never exposed to atmospheric contamination [8]. All Ryugu samples were run in "single shot" mode [9]. In most cases the amount of O2 gas liberated was less than 140 μg, the approximate limit for bellows analysis on the MAT 253. In these cases analysis was undertaken using the MAT 253 cryogenic microvolume. Δ
17 O values were calculated as Δ17 O = δ17 O-0.52δ18 O. Results: The weighted average of the Ryugu analyses, both in terms of Δ17 O and δ18 O, is close to that for Orgueil (CI), but plots away from that of the CY chondrite Y-82162. This data supports the proposed relationship between Ryugu and the CI chondrites [3-5]. Individual Ryugu analyses show a large range in δ18 O values, from 11.46‰ to 19.30‰ (blank corrected values). This large range reflects intrinsic isotopic heterogeneity at the sampling scale involved, with detailed mineralogical studies [4, 5] indicating a significant level of heterogeneity within individual Ryugu particles. In addition, SIMS analysis reveals that Ryugu mineral phases are isotopically heterogeneous, with magnetite and Ca-carbonate differing by more than 30‰ [10]. In contrast, analyses for Orgueil and Y-82162 were drawn from homogenized powders. Calculations, using Ryugu modal data [4], yield bulk δ18 O values close to the range determined in this study. There is a small resolvable difference between the average Δ17 O composition of the Ryugu particles and Orgueil, (0.66 ± 0.09‰ and 0.0.58 ± 0.09‰ respectively (2SD weighted)). Calculation indicates that this difference reflects the terrestrial contamination of Orgueil [8]. Discussion and conclusions: Despite the close O-isotope similarities between Ryugu particles and Orgueil, suggesting a genetic relationship between them, our data reveal higher Δ17O values for Ryugu particles compared to Orgueil. This difference likely reflects terrestrial contamination of Orgueil since its fall in 1864 [11]. Weathering in the terrestrial environment would pull the bulk analysis closer to the TFL. This conclusion is consistent with evidence that interlayer water in Orgueil is of terrestrial origin [12], and that Orgueil contains ferrihydrite and sulphate [13], whereas Ryugu particles do not [4, 5]. While Ryugu particles are the most uncontaminated CI-related material we have [8], they are not pristine and have been modified by a variety of processes in the regolith [14]. The evidence from Ryugu suggests that care needs to be taken when using CI meteorite data as Solar System proxy values e.g. [15]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Introduction: Imaging using X-ray absorption contrast by synchrotron nano-computed tomography of a Ryugu pyrrhotite crystal (C0002-FC012 - from the second Hayabusa2 spacecraft touch-down site) revealed probable fluid inclusions in the center of a crystal of pyrrhotite, suggesting the parent fluids were trapped in the early stages of crystal growth on Ryugu's parent asteroid. We previously described the performance of Time-of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) depth profiling and high-resolution mapping at -120°C to expose and measure the composition of the trapped fluids in a frozen state in two Ryugu inclusions [1,2]. Here we report results from follow-on measurements of additional inclusions in the same pyrrhotite crystal, and the initial results of measurement of standards. The ultimate goal is to reveal the quantitative composition of the fluids that caused aqueous alteration, in particular the H
2 O:CO2 ratio, which will also facilitate cosmochemical modeling of the alteration process. Measurements of Ryugu Fluids: TOF-SIMS measurements of four Ryugu fluid inclusions revealed that the ancient, trapped fluids on Ryugu's parent asteroid were saline aqueous solutions containing H2 O, CO2 , sulfur species, and nitrogen- and chlorine-bearing organic compounds identified by representative secondary ion species including O- , OH- , CO- , S- , Cl- , C2- , C2 H- , and CN-. The inferred presence of CO2 indicates formation of the sulfides, and by implication the Ryugu parent body, beyond the H2 O and CO2 snow lines of the early solar system, i.e. > 3-4 au from the Sun [3]. In this work we made measurements of only a few planes exposed by sputtering. We later discovered that we should have measured the inclusions from top to bottom, as shown by our subsequent measureents of standards. Standards: The next step in these analyses was the measurement of appropriate fluid standards, reported here. Artificial aqueous fluid inclusions in quartz were made at Virginia Tech (see [4] for technical details), with a known ratio of H2 O to CO2 of 1:1. The surface of a quartz grain was carefully polished to bring promising artificial fluid inclusions to within 2 µm of the surface. Before freezing, the boundaries between water and CO2 ice were apparent, as was a separate H2 O-CO2 clathrate phase at that boundary. Thus, even before freezing the inclusions were compositionally heteorgeneous, although the bulk compositions should all have been equal and constant. H2 O:CO2 Measurements: For the previous smeasurements in the pyrrhotite crystal we used CO-as the molecular fragment to indicate the presence and apparent concentration of CO2 [1]. However, host quartz in the standards contained major oxygen, which precluded reliance on the CO- molecule. Therefore, we used the molecular fragment Cto measure CO2 . Measurement of five standard fluid inclusions (entire inclusions rather than measurements of a few "slices") produced the following results. In four of the five standard inclusions the ratio H2 O:CO2 varied by less than 10% relative, which was considered a success. The fifth inclusion produced a ratio 2x greater than the others, possibly due to leakage of CO2 . The next step is to measure stardards inclusions with at least one additional, different H2 O:CO2 ratio, which will permit construction of a calibration curve for determining actual H2 O:CO2 ratios in fluid inclusions. In the course of this work we also verified that different species in the fluid inclusions freeze at different temperatures, resulting in frozen inclusions whose composition varies unpredictably as they are sequentially sputtered and measured by TOF-SIMS. This behavior necessitates that fluid inclusion contents must be measured in-toto in order to produce accurate bulk compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
