1. Petascale turbulence simulation using a highly parallel fast multipole method on GPUs

Abstract

This paper reports large-scale direct numerical simulations of homogeneous-isotropic fluid turbulence, achieving sustained performance of 1.08 petaflop/s on gpu hardware using single precision. The simulations use a vortex particle method to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, with a highly parallel fast multipole method (FMM) as numerical engine, and match the current record in mesh size for this application, a cube of 4096^3 computational points solved with a spectral method. The standard numerical approach used in this field is the pseudo-spectral method, relying on the FFT algorithm as numerical engine. The particle-based simulations presented in this paper quantitatively match the kinetic energy spectrum obtained with a pseudo-spectral method, using a trusted code. In terms of parallel performance, weak scaling results show the fmm-based vortex method achieving 74% parallel efficiency on 4096 processes (one gpu per mpi process, 3 gpus per node of the TSUBAME-2.0 system). The FFT-based spectral method is able to achieve just 14% parallel efficiency on the same number of mpi processes (using only cpu cores), due to the all-to-all communication pattern of the FFT algorithm. The calculation time for one time step was 108 seconds for the vortex method and 154 seconds for the spectral method, under these conditions. Computing with 69 billion particles, this work exceeds by an order of magnitude the largest vortex method calculations to date.

Abstract

Utilizing a high-sensitivity photomultiplier tube (PMT) and an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera, the light emission from the surface of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and alumina ceramic samples was investigated in vacuum under a stepped dc voltage in order to study the initiation and development of surface discharge. Different from the classical electrode contact by butting electrodes on a sample directly, to achieve a fine contact between electrodes and the surface of a sample, the metalized electrodes were employed by sputtering two additional gold contacts on each sample in advance. The two types of materials showed quite different optical characteristics. It was suggested that there were several processes possibly related to the initiation mechanism of the surface discharge. Besides the field electron emission from the cathode triple junction (CTJ) for the classical electrode contact, there were charge injection and transport in the surface states of dielectrics, and charge trapping and detrapping phenomena. Electroluminescence (EL) emission was emitted due to the radiative recombination of electrons and holes injected. These processes were strongly dependent on the electrode contact manner and the surface states of insulating materials.

Abstract

Electroluminescence from a surface layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has been investigated using a photomultiplier tube and an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) camera under ac or half rectified ac (HRAC) electric fields tangential to the polymer surface. The electroluminescence (EL) characteristics from the polymer surface layer showed a similarity to those from PTFE and other polymer films subjected to ac or HRAC electric fields in the normal direction to the surface. ICCD imaging of EL indicated a large area of EL activity where the EL intensity was maximum at the electrode edge and EL was still observable 2 mm from the electrode. The injection and transport of electrons and holes via surface states in the surface layer and the subsequent electron-hole recombination give rise to EL, strongly depending on the spatial distribution of the surface states. The injection length of charges can be estimated to be at least 2 mm from the electrode in the tangential direction to the surface.

Abstract

EL (electroluminescence) in several polymeric materials was investigated in the electric field range < 90 kV/mm. We used polymeric films with semi-transparent gold electrodes: low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene and polyvinylchloride. The EL characteristics were very low EL inception fields (2 to 20 kV/mm) which strongly depend on the material and very low energy photon emission (mainly in the red region of 1.6 to 1.8 eV). These results reveal that EL emission occurs predominantly in the metal-polymer interface region rather than in the bulk of the polymer at the applied field. We present a model of EL emission in the metal-polymer interface region to explain our results qualitatively. In this model, the mechanism of EL emission is the radiative recombination of the electrons and holes trapped at the surface states of the polymer, which causes photon emission in the red region. The EL inception field and EL intensity depend on the density of the surface states of the polymers.

Abstract

The use of accelerator hardware for micromagnetics simulations is described, along with some initial results. The accelerator calculates the dipole interactions at 400 gigaflops, allowing large simulations to be performed with arbitrary geometries. Two research programs are highlighted, the simulation of a curved MRAM cell and the simulation of the write head in a computer disk drive.

Abstract

Kesterite semiconductors, particularly Cu 2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), have attracted attention for thin-film solar cells. We investigate the incorporation of Fe into CZTS to form the Cu 2(Zn,Fe)SnS4 solid-solution for tuning the lattice spacing and band gap. First-principles calculations confirm a phase transition from kesterite (Zn-rich) to stannite (Fe-rich) at Fe/Zn ∼ 0.4∼ 0.4 . The exothermic enthalpy of mixing is consistent with the high solubility of Fe in the lattice. There is a linear band-gap bowing for each phase, which results in a blue-shift of photo-absorption for Fe-rich alloys due to the confinement of the conduction states. We propose compositions optimal for Si tandem cells.

Abstract

The optical emission from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surfaces in a planar concentric metal-polymer-metal structure was investigated under ac electric field in vacuum. Two kinds of optical pattern were observed before the flashover; they were strongly dependent on the magnitude of applied voltage. At a lower applied voltage, the light emission was weak and uniform and was observed close to the edges of both electrodes. It may be considered as electroluminescence phenomena due to the radiative recombination of electrons and holes injected from the electrode into the polymer surface layer. With increase of the applied voltage, the optical emission became significantly strong and irregular, and its activity area gradually expanded from the inner electrode to the outer electrode. The accumulation of electrons injected is supposed to form a long-term negative space charge region away from the inner electrode. A strong modification of the local electric field near its border would result in the detrapping of trapped electrons at a critical applied voltage and hence cause forward/backward secondary electron emission on the surface of PTFE, accompanied by intense light emission and a wide luminescent area, and probably lead to the final surface flashover. It is concluded that the negative charge region is likely located around ∼2.6 mm from the inner electrode edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on a study of [ital W]+ photon production in approximately 20 pb[sup [minus]1] of [ital p][minus][ital [bar p]] collisions at [radical][ital s]=1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our results are in good agreement with standard model expectations and are used to obtain limits on anomalous [ital CP]-conserving [ital WW][gamma] couplings of [minus]2.3[lt][Delta][kappa][lt]2.2 for [lambda]=0 and [minus]0.7[lt][lambda][lt]0.7 for [Delta][kappa]=0 at 95% C.L. We obtain the same limits for [ital CP]-violating couplings. These results provide limits on the higher-order electromagnetic moments of the [ital W] boson of 0.8[lt][ital g][sub [ital W]][lt]3.1 for [ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]]=1 and [minus]0.6[lt][ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]][lt]2.7 for [ital g][sub [ital W]]=2 at 95% C.L.

Abstract

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering was measured at c.m.s. energies [radical][ital s] =546 and 1800 GeV in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.025[lt][minus][ital t][lt]0.29 GeV[sup 2]. The data are well described by the exponential form [ital e][sup [ital b][ital t]] with a slope [ital b]=15.28[plus minus]0.58 (16.98[plus minus]0.25) GeV[sup [minus]2] at [radical][ital s] =546 (1800) GeV. The elastic scattering cross sections are, respectively, [sigma][sub el]=12.87[plus minus]0.30 and 19.70[plus minus]0.85 mb.

Abstract

Pulsed dielectric barrier discharges are generated within bubbles of a gas-liquid two-phase flow that consists of argon bubbles and water. Discharge images were captured by using a high-speed video camera to understand the motion of discharge within bubbles, and an intensified charge-coupled device camera captured temporal discharge images at a nanosecond timescale. In this paper, the discharge processing of pulsed discharges generated inside bubbles is observed using an intensified charge-coupled device camera at an exposure time of 5 ns. Abstract

The average b-hadron lifetime has been measured using a high statistics sample of {ital B} {r_arrow} {ital J}/{psi}{Chi} decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We use a sample with an integrated luminosity of {approx} 90 {ital pb}{sup -1} recorded during the 1994-95 running period. The decay vertices of {approx} 62656 inclusive {ital J}/{psi} {r_arrow} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} candidates have been reconstructed using information from a silicon vertex-detector. The measured {ital B}lifetime, which is the average over all b-hadrons produced in {ital p}{ital {anti p}} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV weighted by their branching ratios into {ital J}/{psi}, is 1.524 {+-} 0.015 ({ital stat}){sup +0.035}{sub -0.026} ({ital sys}) ps. The precision of this measurement is significantly improved compared to the inclusive lifetime measurement published previously using {approx} 10 {ital pb}{sup -1}.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the [ital b]-quark cross section in 1.8 TeV [ital p]-[ital [bar p]] collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab using muonic [ital b]-quark decays. In the central rapidity region ([vert bar][ital y][sup [ital b]][vert bar][lt]1.0), the cross section is 295[plus minus]21[plus minus]75 nb (59[plus minus]14[plus minus]15 nb) for [ital p][sub [ital T]][sup [ital b]][gt]21 GeV/[ital c] (29 GeV/[ital c]). Comparisons are made to previous measurements and next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

Abstract

The W production cross section times the branching ratio for W→lν, l=e,μ decays has been measured as a function of the associated jet multiplicity. The data have been recorded at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1988-89 run. Abstract

Inclusive jet cross sections have been measured in pp collisions at s =546 and 1800 GeV, using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The ratio of jet cross sections is compared to predictions from simple scaling and O(as3) QCD. Abstract

The dijet angular distribution is measured in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. This measurement covers higher mass ranges and larger scattering angles than previously possible. Good agreement is observed between the data and both leading-order [O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{2}$)] and next-to-leading order [O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{3}$)] QCD calculations. A limit on quark compositeness of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}$g1.0 TeV is obtained.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is more prevalent in women. Our goal is to determine the effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) on the development of fibrosis and to compare circulating levels of estrogens in SSc patients and healthy controls.Methods: Using primary human dermal fibroblasts, we evaluated the effect of E2 on fibronectin (FN) expression with and without the estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 182,780, inhibitors of signaling, propyl-pyrazole-triol, an ERα specific ligand, and genistein, an ERβ selective ligand, to identify the signaling pathways mediating E2's effect. We confirmed the fibrotic effect of E2 in human skin using an ex vivo organ culture model. Lastly, we measured levels of E2 and estrone in serum samples from SSc patients with diffuse cutaneous involvement and healthy controls using mass spectrometry.Results: E2 increased expression of FN in dermal fibroblasts. ICI 182,780, inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate inhibitor, and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor blocked the effects of E2 on FN. Propyl-pyrazole-triol, but not genistein, significantly increased FN expression. Ex vivo, E2 induced fibrosis of human skin. The effects of E2 were abrogated by ICI 182,780. Circulating levels of E2 and estrone were significantly increased in sera of patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc.Conclusion: Our findings implicate estrogens in the fibrotic process and may explain the preponderance of SSc in women. ICI 182,780 or other ER signaling antagonists may be effective agents for the treatment of fibrosis. © 2013 Aida-Yasuoka et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
