Abstract

This paper describes a case in which no complete demolishment was observed in a geofoam (expanded polystyrene foam EPS) embankment. Used for local roads situated over active faults at a mountainous site in Mashiki Town, Kumamoto, Japan, the EPS withstood two successive strong earthquakes that struck Kumamoto and Oita prefectures in 2015. The EPS blocks of this EPS embankment were markedly shifted sideways both horizontally and vertically because earthquake-caused landslides occurred behind the EPS fills. Nevertheless, only a part of the EPS embankment collapsed, causing no damage to the temple nearby. Thereafter, the road surface was remediated temporarily immediately after the earthquakes and was maintained for the opening of traffic. This case demonstrates that EPS presents great benefits: most importantly, the partly collapsed EPS road was put into practical use as a temporary road supporting the daily life of local residents. This report describes an engineering perspective of why the road was not collapsed completely. Future issues to be considered by local governments and engineering institutions are explained for the preparation of great earthquake countermeasures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to examine the toxicity of magnesium chloride hexahydrate, four groups of 10 male and 10 female F344 rats received the compound by dietary supplementation at 2.5, 0.5, 0.1 or 0% for 90 days. No treatment-related death was observed during the study. Transient soft stool and sustained increase in water consumption were observed both in males and females of the 2.5% group and slight reduction in body weight gain was noted in the high-dose males. There were no toxic changes in food consumption, organ weights, hematology and biochemistry, and histopathological examinations in any treated-groups. Based on these results, the no-observed-adverse-effect-level was estimated to be 0.5%, and 2.5% is considered to be appropriate as highest dose for a 2-year carcinogenicity study.

Abstract

A 13-week subchronic oral toxicity study of Perilla extracts in drinking water containing 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 10% extracts was performed in both sexes of F344 rats. Rats were randomly divided into 4 groups each consisting of 10 males and 10 females. No animals died during the period of administration. There were no treatment-related changes in body weight gain or in hematological or blood biochemistry values. Nor were any treatment-related histopathological changes observed in the highest dose group. These findings indicate that ingestion of 10% Perilla extracts in drinking water for 13-week does not cause any toxicological changes in rats.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although engineering education has evolved in ways that improve the readiness of graduates to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century, national and international organizations continue to call for change. Future changes in engineering education should be guided by research on expertise and the learning processes that support its development. PURPOSE: The goals of this paper are: to relate key findings from studies of the development of expertise to engineering education, to summarize instructional practices that are consistent with these findings, to provide examples of learning experiences that are consistent with these instructional practices, and finally, to identify challenges to implementing such learning experiences in engineering programs. SCOPE/METHOD: The research synthesized for this article includes that on the development of expertise, students' approaches to learning, students' responses to instructional practices, and the role of motivation in learning. In addition, literature on the dominant teaching and learning practices in engineering education is used to frame some of the challenges to implementing alternative approaches to learning. CONCLUSION: Current understanding of expertise, and the learning processes that develop it, indicates that engineering education should encompass a set of learning experiences that allow students to construct deep conceptual knowledge, to develop the ability to apply key technical and professional skills fluently, and to engage in a number of authentic engineering projects. Engineering curricula and teaching methods are often not well aligned with these goals. Curriculum-level instructional design processes should be used to design and implement changes that will improve alignment. © 2011 ASEE.

41. View-based cognitive map learning by an autonomous robot

Abstract

This paper presents a view-based approach to map learning and navigation in mazes. By means of graph theory we have shown that the view-graph is a sufficient representation for map behaviour such as path planning. A neural network for unsupervised learning of the view-graph from sequences of views is constructed. We use a modified Kohonen (1988) learning rule that transforms temporal sequence (rather than featural similarity) into connectedness. In the main part of the paper, we present a robot implementation of the scheme. The results show that the proposed network is able to support map behaviour in simple environments.
