Abstract

The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, $^{16}$Be, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy $^{17}$B beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of $0.84(3)$ and $2.15(5)$ MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of $0.32(8)$ and $0.95(15)$ MeV respectively. These were assigned to be the ground ($J^{\pi}=0^+$) and first excited ($2^+$) state, with $E_x=1.31(6)$ MeV. The mass excess of $^{16}$Be was thus deduced to be $56.93(13)$ MeV, some $0.5$ MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wavefunction during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2$^+$ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

Abstract

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p, pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

Abstract

The charge-exchange (p,n) reaction at 220 MeV has been measured to extract the strength distribution of Gamow-Teller transitions from the doubly magic unstable nucleus 132Sn. A recently developed experimental technique of measuring the (p,n) reaction in inverse kinematics has been applied to the study of unstable nuclei in the mass region around A∼100 for the first time. We have combined the low-energy neutron detector WINDS and the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory (RIBF). The particle identification plot for the reaction residues obtained by the spectrometer provides the clear separation of the CE reaction channel from other background events, enabling us to identify kinematic curves corresponding the (p, n) reaction. Further analysis to reconstruct the excitation energy spectrum is ongoing.

Abstract

A kinematically complete quasi-free $(p,pn)$ experiment in inverse kinematics was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $^{17}$B, which had long been considered to have neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $1s_{1/2}$ and $0d_{5/2}$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)$\%$ was determined for $1s_{1/2}$. Our finding of such a small $1s_{1/2}$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $^{17}$B. The present work gives the smallest $s$- or $p$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features, and implies that the dominant occupation of $s$ or $p$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of neutron halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters,8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The formation of a dineutron in the nucleus $^{11}$Li is found to be localized to the surface region. The experiment measured the intrinsic momentum of the struck neutron in $^{11}$Li via the $(p,pn)$ knockout reaction at 246 MeV/nucleon. The correlation angle between the two neutrons is, for the first time, measured as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum. A comparison with reaction calculations reveals the localization of the dineutron at $r\sim3.6$ fm. The results also support the density dependence of dineutron formation as deduced from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for nuclear matter., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The parity-transfer $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction is presented as a new probe for investigating isovector $0^-$ states in nuclei. The properties of $0^-$ states provide a stringent test of the threshold density for pion condensation in nuclear matter. Utilizing a $0^+ \rightarrow 0^-$ transition in the projectile, the parity-transfer reaction transfers an internal parity to a target nucleus, resulting in a unique sensitivity to unnatural-parity states. Consequently, the selectivity for $0^-$ states is higher than in other reactions employed to date. The probe was applied to a study of the $0^-$ states in ${}^{12}{\rm B}$ via the ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction at $247~{\rm MeV/u}$. The excitation energy spectra were deduced by detecting the ${}^{15}{\rm O}+p$ pair produced in the decay of the ${}^{16}{\rm F}$ ejectile. A known $0^-$ state at $E_x = 9.3~{\rm MeV}$ was observed with an unprecedentedly high signal-to-noise ratio. The data also revealed new candidates of $0^-$ states at $E_x=6.6 \pm 0.4$ and $14.8 \pm 0.3~{\rm MeV}$. Abstract

We present an investigation of the structure of 13Be obtained via a kinematically complete measurement of the (p; pn) reaction in inverse kinematics at 265 MeV/nucleon. The relative energy spectrum of 13Be is compared to Transfer-to-the-Continuum calculations which use as structure inputs the overlaps of the 14Be ground-state wave function, computed in a three-body model, with the unbound states of the 13Be residual nucleus. The key role of neutron p-wave orbital in the interpretation of the low-relative-energy part of the spectrum is discussed.

Abstract

The neutron-shell structure of $^{25}$F was studied using quasi-free (p,2p) knockout reaction at 270A MeV in inverse kinematics. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $\pi$0d$_{5/2}$ orbital is found to be $1.0 \pm 0.3$. However, the spectroscopic factor for the ground-state to ground-state transition ($^{25}$F, $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$) is only $0.36\pm 0.13$, and $^{24}$O excited states are produced from the 0d$_{5/2}$ proton knockout. The result shows that the $^{24}$O core of $^{25}$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $^{24}$O nucleus, and the core consists of 35% $^{24}$O$_{g.s}$. and 65% excited $^{24}$O., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) involves a block in terminal differentiation of the myeloid lineage and uncontrolled proliferation of a progenitor state. Using phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), it is possible to overcome this block in THP-1 cells (an M5-AML containing the MLL-MLLT3 fusion), resulting in differentiation to an adherent monocytic phenotype. As part of FANTOM4, we used microarrays to identify 23 microRNAs that are regulated by PMA. We identify four PMA-induced micro- RNAs (mir-155, mir-222, mir-424 and mir-503) that when overexpressed cause cell-cycle arrest and partial differentiation and when used in combination induce additional changes not seen by any individual microRNA. We further characterize these prodifferentiative microRNAs and show that mir-155 and mir-222 induce G2 arrest and apoptosis, respectively. We find mir-424 and mir-503 are derived from a polycistronic precursor mir-424-503 that is under repression by the MLL-MLLT3 leukemogenic fusion. Both of these microRNAs directly target cell-cycle regulators and induce G1 cell-cycle arrest when overexpressed in THP-1. We also find that the pro-differentiative mir-424 and mir-503 downregulate the anti-differentiative mir-9 by targeting a site in its primary transcript. Abstract

In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking due to strongly coupled fourth-family quarks and leptons, their low-energy effective descriptions may involve multiple composite Higgs fields, leading to a possibility that the electroweak phase transition at finite temperature is first order due to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. We examine the behavior of the electroweak phase transition based on the effective renormalizable Yukawa theory which consists of the fourth-family quarks and two SU(2)-doublet Higgs fields corresponding to the bilinear operators of the fourth-family quarks with/without imposing the compositeness condition. The strength of the first-order phase transition is estimated by using the finite-temperature effective potential at one-loop with the ring-improvement. In the Yukawa theory without the compositeness condition, it is found that there is a parameter region where the first-order phase transition is strong enough for the electroweak baryogenesis with the experimentally acceptable Higgs boson and fourth-family quark masses. On the other hand, when the compositeness condition is imposed, the phase transition turns out to be weakly first order, or possibly second order, although the result is rather sensitive to the details of the compositeness condition. Combining with the result of the Yukawa theory without the compositeness condition, it is argued that with the fourth-family quark masses in the range of 330-480 GeV, corresponding to the compositeness scale in the range of 1.0-2.3 TeV, the four-fermion interaction among the fourth-family quarks does not lead to the strongly first-order electroweak phase transition., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures; references updated, typos corrected

Abstract

It has been argued by Pisarski and Wilczek that finite temperature restoration of the chiral symmetry SU(Nf) x SU(Nf) is first-order for Nf >=3. This type of chiral symmetry with a large Nf may appear in the Higgs sector if one considers models such as walking technicolor theories. We examine the first-order restoration of the chiral symmetry from the point of view of the electroweak phase transition. The strength of the transition is estimated in SU(2) x U(1) gauged linear sigma model by means of the finite temperature effective potential at one-loop with the ring improvement. Even if the mass of the neutral scalar boson corresponding to the Higgs boson is larger than 114 GeV, the first-order transition can be strong enough for the electroweak baryogenesis, as long as the extra massive scalar bosons (required for the linear realization) are kept heavier than the neutral scalar boson. Explicit symmetry breaking terms reduce the strength of the first-order transition, but the transition can remain strongly first-order even when the masses of pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons become as large as the current lower bound of direct search experiments., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures, minor corrections, references added

Abstract

Spectroscopy of 16B plays an essential role in understanding the halo structure in 17B, but very limited knowledge has so far been obtained. We have carried out a kinematically complete measurement on the spectroscopy of 16B by using quasi-free (p,pn) reaction on 17B. The level scheme of 16B up to 5 MeV was made clear for the first time.

Abstract

We present an investigation of the structure of $^{13}$Be obtained via a kinematically complete measurement of the (p,pn) reaction in inverse kinematics at 265 MeV/nucleon. The relative energy spectrum of $^{13}$Be is compared to Transfer-to-the-Continuum calculations which use as structure inputs the overlaps of the $^{14}$Be ground-state wave function, computed in a three-body model, with the unbound states of the $^{13}$Be residual nucleus. The key role of neutron p-wave orbital in the interpretation of the low-relative-energy part of the spectrum is discussed.

Abstract

The neutron-shell structure of $^{25}$F was studied using quasi-free (p,2p) knockout reaction at 270A MeV in inverse kinematics. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $\pi$0d$_{5/2}$ orbital is found to be $1.0 \pm 0.3$. However, the spectroscopic factor for the ground-state to ground-state transition ($^{25}$F, $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$) is only $0.36\pm 0.13$, and $^{24}$O excited states are produced from the 0d$_{5/2}$ proton knockout. The result shows that the $^{24}$O core of $^{25}$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $^{24}$O nucleus, and the core consists of 35% $^{24}$O$_{g.s}$. and 65% excited $^{24}$O.

Abstract

The [cdc19.sup.+] gene encodes an essential member of the MCM family of replication proteins in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We have examined the structure and function of the Cdc19p protein using molecular and genetic approaches. We find that overproduction of wild-type Cdc19p in wild-type cells has no effect, but cdc19-P1 mutant cells do not tolerate elevated levels of other MCM proteins or overexpression of mutant forms of Cdc19p. We have found genetic interactions between [cdc19.sup.+] and genes encoding subunits of DNA polymerase [Delta] and the replication initiator [cdc18.sup.+]. We have constructed a series of point mutations and sequence deletions throughout Cdc19p, which allow us to distinguish essential from nonessential regions of the protein. Not surprisingly, conserved residues in the MCM homology domain are required for protein function, but some residues outside the core homology domain are dispensable.
