High inflation has been prevailing almost in all countries since the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper explores the main drivers of inflation in OECD countries after the pandemic by using recent data. Our empirical model is estimated with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method applied on cross-sectional data for OECD countries in 2022. The main result confirms that fiscal and monetary expansion during and after the pandemic are strongly associated with high inflation across countries. Other important finding suggests that democracy seems to be an important factor in countries to have less inflation rate. In other words, our study shows that less democratic countries face higher inflation rates. We also find that government debt to GDP ratio is negatively associated with inflation rate. Specifically, we contribute to inflation debate by analyzing the political stability with money and fiscal growth in the same model.

Social changes often take place when a culture is confronted with the influence of an overpowering, ‘higher’ culture with predetermined sets of values. In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, the Creole culture is changing due to the influence of the North (of America) and in Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’s Aşk-ı Memnu, Turkish culture is affected by the West (Europe). The results of these influences are observed best in the characters of women and conceptions about womanhood. Two heroines of these novels, Edna and Bihter, do not conform to the norms of their society, resulting in conflicts in their family and friend circles and leading to their subsequent suicides. They represent the new type of woman or the ‘new woman’, who seeks to set the rules of her own life and enjoys the same social freedom as men do, however, these women cannot manage the overwhelming social changes and eventually falter. The aim of this research is to analyse the periods of big social and political transitions in the communities and the representation of new women in the face of these changes.

This paper uncovers the link between economic development and environmental degradation in Turkey by employing two distinct methods. We test the so-called EKC hypothesis for four various outcomes, including carbon dioxide emissions, wastewater, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter by implementing time-series and panel data models. Fully modified ordinary least squares provide an N-shaped linkage between environmental degradation, such as carbon dioxide emissions and economic growth between 1961 and 2014. The random- and fixed-effects models indicate that there exists an N-shaped connection between wastewater and particulate matter quality indicators and economic growth spanning 1992 and 2013. However, we find inverted N-shaped relationship between SO2 and economic growth over the same period. Our findings urge policymakers in Turkey to take precautions by implementing national policies to fight against pollution to increase environmental quality.

This study reexamines the impact of foreign direct investment inflows on carbon emissions in middle-income and OECD countries over the period 1992 – 2017. For that purpose, we employ a two-step system GMM dynamic panel data estimator controlling for endogeneity, omitted variable, and simultaneity in our panels. The empirical results from the analyses show that FDI increases carbon emissions in middle-income countries and provide evidence of the pollution haven hypothesis in developing countries. Our findings suggest that FDI has a small halo effect on advanced economies. Our study also provides evidence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis across different panel samples.

The automotive sector has strategic importance in the economies of both developed and developing countries. The automotive sector, one of the most critical sectors in Turkey, is considered a priority sector in macroeconomic policies included in medium-term programs. Since it is a strategic and leading sector for economic growth, some tax incentives, which are one of the fiscal policy tools in the recession periods of the economy, are applied to the automotive sector. This study analyzes the effectiveness of tax reduction and scrap incentive policies applied to the automotive sector in Turkey between 2006 and 2020 by considering the sales figures in the automotive sector. We find that tax incentive is significantly associated with the increase in the sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles; however, it does not affect the sales of trucks. The most significant increase was seen in automobiles with higher price elasticity of demand. In addition, a negative relationship was found between automotive sales and loan interest rates and a positive relationship with national income., Otomotiv sektörü hem gelişmiş hem de gelişmekte olan ülkelerin ekonomileri içerisinde stratejik bir öneme sahiptir. Ülkemizde de en önemli sektörlerden biri olan otomotiv sektörü, orta vadeli programlar içerisinde yer alan makroekonomik politikalarda öncelikli sektör olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Ekonomik büyüme için stratejik ve öncü bir sektör olması nedeniyle, ekonominin durgunluk dönemlerinde bir maliye politikası araçlarından olan bazı vergisel teşvikler otomotiv sektörüne uygulanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de 2006-2020 yılları arasında otomotiv sektörüne uygulanan vergi indirimi ve hurda teşvik politikalarının otomotiv sektöründeki satış rakamları ele alınarak etkinliği analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen sonuç, vergi teşviklerinin otomobil, otobüs, kamyon satışlarını anlamlı bir şekilde artırdığıdır. En önemli artış ise talebin fiyat esnekliği daha yüksek olan otomobilde görülmüştür.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’de 1975-2017 dönemi için kişi başına düşen gayri safi yurtiçi hasıla, sağlık harcamaları ve doğuşta beklenen yaşam süresi arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Literatürdeki hipotezlerinden ilki uzun zaman süresinin daha büyük ekonomik kalkınma ilişkili olduğu iken diğer hipotez, uzun yaşam süresinin nüfus artışına neden olduğundan dolayı ekonomik büyüme olumsuz etkilediğidir. Pozitif etkinin kanalı ise, uzun yaşam süresinin düşük ölüm oranlarıyla ilişkili olmasıdır. Söz konusu değişkenler arasındaki ilişkinin varlığını test etmek amacıyla VAR (Vector Autoregression) ve Granger nedensellik analizleri kullanılmıştır. Granger nedensellik testlerine göre doğuşta beklenen yaşam süresinin ve sağlık harcamalarının kişi başına düşen gayri safi yurtiçi hasılanın nedeni olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. VAR analizleri, sağlık harcamalarındaki değişimin kişi başına düşen gayri safi yurtiçi hasılaya ve doğuşta beklenen yaşam süresine bağlı olduğu, kişi başına düşen gayri safi yurtiçi hasıladaki değişimin ise önemli bir kısmının doğuşta beklenen yaşam süresinden kaynaklandığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Policymakers planning to attract FDI in middle-income countries should do a cost-benefit analysis by considering its damage to the environment and its positive impact on economic growth.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relevance of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, which shows that there is an inverted-U shaped relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth. We investigated the relationship between per capita income and the carbon dioxide emissions as indicators of environmental pollution in Developing Countries, OECD, Middle East and OPEC countries for the period of 1970-2016. The contribution of our study is the evaluation and comparison of Developing Countries, OECD, Middle East and OPEC countries together in the context of EKC. We employ the fixed effect and GMM techniques in this study and results obtained from cubic models indicate that the N-shaped relationship for Developing, Middle East countries and OECD countries and inverted N-shaped relationship for OPEC countries exist. Considering these conclusions, we draw some serious policy implications for the policy makers in these countries. Governments should closely follow the industries that generate CO2 emissions as after some point environmental degradation increases again as income increases. In addition adopting clean energies including wind and solar systems and making these technologies widespread across countries might reduce CO2 emissions. Another alternative way to reduce CO2 emissions might be a carbon tax which should be implemented for polluters.

Bu makalede, 1997-2005 yılları arasında Türkiye’deki tüm il ve ilçe belediyelerinin mali verilerini içeren yeni ve detaylı panel veri seti kullanılarak sinek kâğıdı etkisi ve onun yerelde vergi gayreti ile ilişkisi araştırılmıştır. Sabit etki ve dinamik panel veri GMM tahmin yöntemlerinden faydalanarak sinek kâğıdı etkininin varlığı test edilmiştir. Tahmin sonuçlarına göre, Türkiye’de belediyelerde sinek kâğıdı etkisi varlığı ortaya konulmuştur. Bu sonuç, çeşitli model ve ekonometrik tekniklerle desteklenmiştir. Ayrıca, şartsız olarak merkezi yönetimden belediyelere verilen mali transferlerin yerelde gelir toplama gayreti üzerinde ikame etkisinin olduğu görülmektedir., In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of flypaper effect and its relation to the local tax effort, by using a new and detailed panel data set that consist of all province and district municipalities’ fiscal data in Turkey between 1997 and 2005. We use fixed effects and dynamic panel data specific GMM estimators to obtain the results. We provide new evidence using an advanced technique which is firstly used to uncover flypaper effect in Turkey. According to our estimations, the flypaper effect does exist for the Turkish municipalities. This result is robust to various model specifications and econometric techniques. Turkish municipalities also experience substitution effect of unconditional grants on the revenue collection efforts.

Culture and media represent two terms which nowadays have special connection. This connection was nott so strong in the early days. It seems that the extremely modern today’s technology definitely plays its inevitable role. Media as a term for the first time appears in the first half of the 20th century. For this reason the mutual connection between the culture as a term and the media, mass media as other terms, wasn’t so obvious. One or two centuries ago the modern TV, numerous TV channels, modern digital things, numerous TVs were not something unthinkable. For this reason one, two or more centuries ago the main cultural activity was performed through the theatrical stage and the glamorous waves organizes by the numerous kings, emperors and other rulers through Europe and abroad. In these conditions it was absolutely impossible to talk, write or debate about the culture and media as mutual connected terms. Even after the first appearance of the term media and the fast development of the modern technology these two terms, the culture and media, became able to demonstrate their mutual connection; finally the simple man from the whole world was able to see and feel this connection between these two terms; finally even the simple man dared to write about his/her culture, customs, tradition, language, nationality, ethnicity and to represent it in the different magazines, newspapers, even books. At this point we can say that the culture and the media, little by little but for sure entered in the circle of the common connection. That’s the moment when these two terms finally were located in one common place and the simple masses started observing these terms as two inevitable connected terms. Of course, the numerous TV channels and the fast development of the modern technology started representing the culture as an important and extremely interesting thing for representing, discussing and debating; however, this mutual development and connection will be described in more details in the next part of this arti cle. For this reason here I will finish with my abstract but I will invite you to read further my article; this article offers interesting details for the culture and media and their strong connection not only as terms but also their connection with our daily society; I think this detail would be an quite strong reason to convince you to read and publish my article which contains an obvious cosmopolitan character. İlk zamanlarda birbirleriyle güçlü bir bağlantıları yoktu. Son derece modern olan günümüz teknolojisinin bu bağlantının kesinlikle kaçınılmaz bir rol oynadığını düşünüyoruz. Bir terim olarak medya ilk kez 20. Yüzyılın ilk yarısında ortaya çıktı. Bu nedenden ötürü, terim olarak kültür ve medya, başka bir deyişle ana akım medya, arasında ki ortak bağlantı görünenin aksine o kadar da açık değildi. Bir ve ya iki yüzyıl önce modern televizyon, çok sayıda televizyon kanalları, modern dijital nesneler, çok sayıda T.V ler düşünülebilen şeyler değildi. Birkaç yüzyıl önce temel kültürel aktivite tiyatro kanalı ile sergilenir ve göz kamaştırıcı dalgalar çok sayıda kral, imparator ve diğer hükümdarlar tarafından Avrupa ve yurtdışında örgütlenirdi. Bu şartlar altında medya ve kültürü bağlantılı terimler olarak konuşmak, yazmak ve tartışmak kesinlikle imkânsızdı. Medya teriminin ilk ortaya çıkışı ve modern teknolojinin hızlı gelişmesinden sonra bile bu iki terim, kültür ve medya, karşılıklı bağlantılarını gösterebildi. Nihayet bütün dünyadaki basit adam, bu iki terim arasındaki bu bağlantıyı görüp hissetti; Nihayetinde basit adam bile kendi kültürü, gelenekleri, dilleri, vatandaşlıkları ve etnik kökenleri hakkında yazmaya cesaret ederek bunu farklı dergilerde, gazetelerde, hatta kitaplarda temsil etmeye cüret etti. Bu noktada kültürden ve medyadan azınlık olduğunu söyleyebiliriz ancak ortak bağlantı çemberine kesinlikle girilmiştir. Bu iki terimin nihayetinde ortak bir yerde bulunduğu ve basit ana akım kitleleri, bu terimleri iki kaçınılmaz bağlı terim olarak görmekteydi.
