Abstract Previous studies have indicated that brain functional plasticity and reorganization in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). However, the effects of cervical cord compression on the functional integration and separation between and/or within modules remain unclear. This study aimed to address these questions using graph theory. Functional MRI was conducted on 46 DCM patients and 35 healthy controls (HCs). The intra- and inter-modular connectivity properties of the whole-brain functional network and nodal topological properties were then calculated using theoretical graph analysis. The difference in categorical variables between groups was compared using a chi-squared test, while that between continuous variables was evaluated using a two-sample t-test. Correlation analysis was conducted between modular connectivity properties and clinical parameters. Modules interaction analyses showed that the DCM group had significantly greater inter-module connections than the HCs group (DMN-FPN: t = 2.38, p = 0.02); inversely, the DCM group had significantly lower intra-module connections than the HCs group (SMN: t = − 2.13, p = 0.036). Compared to HCs, DCM patients exhibited higher nodal topological properties in the default-mode network and frontal–parietal network. In contrast, DCM patients exhibited lower nodal topological properties in the sensorimotor network. The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score was positively correlated with inter-module connections (r = 0.330, FDR p = 0.029) but not correlated with intra-module connections. This study reported alterations in modular connections and nodal centralities in DCM patients. Decreased nodal topological properties and intra-modular connection in the sensory-motor regions may indicate sensory-motor dysfunction. Additionally, increased nodal topological properties and inter-modular connection in the default mode network and frontal-parietal network may serve as a compensatory mechanism for sensory-motor dysfunction in DCM patients. This could provide an implicative neural basis to better understand alterations in brain networks and the patterns of changes in brain plasticity in DCM patients.

Abstract In this paper, the effect of zero-valent iron (Fe0) activated persulfate (PDS) on the removal of enrofloxacin (ENR) was investigated, and the effect and mechanism were analyzed by exploring the effects of Fe0 concentration, PDS concentration, pH, and the influence of anion and aqueous matrix on the removal of ENR by the Fe0/PDS system. The results showed that when [ENR] = 20 µmol/L, [Fe0] = 0.15 g/L, [PDS] = 0.4 mmol/L, the removal rate of ENR was 85.3% at 90 min, the mainradicals were HO•, SO4 •− and O2 •−. At the same time, the system had a good mineralization effect (TOC removal rate > 40%), in addition, the system did not show obvious toxicity to soil microorganisms after the reaction, furthermore the Fe0/PDS system had a good removal effect on ENR in a wide pH range (4 ≤ pH ≤ 10). There is basically no difference in the removal rate of Fe0/PDS system in ultrapure water and river water. The results of this experiment could provide a reference for the removal of antibiotics based on advanced oxidation techniques based on SO4 •−.

Abstract Background The interferon‐γ (IFN‐γ) signaling pathway is activated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to assess the causal association between IFN‐γ, IFN‐γ receptor 1 (IFN‐γR1), and IFN‐γR2 and SLE using a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) design. Methods Genetic instruments for exposure to IFN‐γ, IFN‐γR1, and IFN‐γR2 were derived from a large genome‐wide association study (GWAS) that included a sample size of 3301 participants. Instrumental variables for SLE were selected from another independent GWAS analysis comprising 5201 cases and 6099 controls with European ancestry. Bidirectional two‐sample MR was performed using inverse variance weighting, MR‐Egger regression, and weighted median methods. A series of sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the results. Results The inverse variance weighting showed that IFN‐γ had a positive causal association with the risk of SLE (odd ratio [OR] = 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.47, p = 0.018). IFN‐γR2 levels were not associated with SLE risk after adjustment for multiple comparisons (OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.73–0.99, p = 0.034). No genetic association was also detected between IFN‐γR1 and SLE (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.79–1.19, p = 0.768). Evidence from bidirectional MR did not support reverse causality. The weighted median regression also showed directionally similar estimates. Conclusion Higher levels of IFN‐γ are significantly associated with an increased risk of SLE, providing insights into the pathogenesis of SLE.

Purpose: Radiation-induced dermatitis (RD) is a common side-effect of therapeutic ionizing radiation that can severely affect patient quality of life. This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for the occurrence of RD in patients with cervical carcinoma undergoing chemoradiotherapy using electronic medical records (EMRs). Methods: Using EMRs, the clinical data of patients who underwent simultaneous radiotherapy and chemotherapy at a tertiary cancer hospital between 2017 and 2022 were retrospectively collected, and the patients were divided into two groups: a training group and a validation group. A predictive model was constructed to predict the development of RD in patients who underwent concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy for cervical cancer. Finally, the model's efficacy was validated using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The incidence of radiation dermatitis was 89.5% (560/626) in the entire cohort, 88.6% (388/438) in the training group, and 91.5% (172/188) in the experimental group. The nomogram was established based on the following factors: age, the days between the beginning and conclusion of radiotherapy, the serum albumin after chemoradiotherapy, the use of single or multiple drugs for concurrent chemotherapy, and the total dose of afterloading radiotherapy. Internal and external verification indicated that the model had good discriminatory ability. Overall, the model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of .66. Conclusions: The risk of RD in patients with cervical carcinoma undergoing chemoradiotherapy is high. A risk prediction model can be developed for RD in cervical carcinoma patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy, based on over 5 years of EMR data from a tertiary cancer hospital.

Abstract This manuscript focuses on a class of stochastic functional differential equations driven by time-changed Brownian motion. By utilizing the Lyapunov method, we capture some sufficient conditions to ensure that the solution for the considered equation is η-stable in the pth moment sense. Subsequently, we present some new criteria of the η-stability in mean square by using time-changed Itô formula and proof by contradiction. Finally, we provide some examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of our main results.

Abstract The combination of toripalimab (an anti-PD-1 antibody) with definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) demonstrated encouraging efficacy against locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the EC-CRT-001 phase II trial (NCT04005170). The primary endpoint of this trial was the clinical complete response rate (cCR), and the secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), duration of response, and quality of life. The exploratory analyses of EC-CRT-001 include exploring the role of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and blood-based tumor mutational burden (bTMB) in predicting the response and survival. In total, 118 blood and 35 tissue samples from 42 enrolled patients were included in the analyses. We found that ctDNA-negative patients achieved a higher cCR compared to those with detectable ctDNA during CRT (83%, 19/23 vs. 39%, 7/18; p = 0.008) or post-CRT (78%, 21/27 vs. 30%, 3/10; p = 0.017). Patients with detectable ctDNA during CRT had shorter PFS (p = 0.014). Similarly, patients with post-CRT detectable ctDNA had a significantly shorter PFS (p = 0.012) and worse OS (p = 0.004). Moreover, patients with high bTMB levels during CRT had prolonged OS (p = 0.027). In conclusion, ctDNA and bTMB have the potential to predict treatment efficacy and survival in ESCC treated with CRT and immunotherapy.

Long-term consumption of high-GI (glycemic index) foods can increase insulin resistance and increase the risk of diabetes. The annual production of okara, which is rich in dietary fiber and regulates postprandial glycemic response, is huge. The reconstituted rice with the addition of okara was prepared using extrusion reconstitution technology. The okara decreased gelatinization and enhanced gel strength, aging of the reconstituted rice. It also promoted water migration, formed V-shaped crystals, and increased the relative crystallinity and short-range orderliness. Within a certain range of addition, okara increased the resistant-starch content of reconstituted rice. It also improves glucose adsorption capacity and hysteresis coefficient, slowing down starch digestion in vitro. The results showed that okara altered the physicochemical properties of reconstituted rice and slowed down its starch digestion in vitro.

Zinc (Zn)-based alloys are considered the next-generation biodegradable material for promising bone-implant devices due to their good degradability, formability, and functionality. Nevertheless, the as-cast Zn alloys showed a low strength-toughness, making it challenging to meet the mechanical properties requirements for high-load-bearing bone implants due to their hexagonal close-packed structure, coarse grain size, and less sliding system. Herein, we have developed biodegradable Zn–5Ce alloys by cerium (Ce) alloying followed by hot-rolling, hot-extrusion, and high-pressure torsion (HPT), respectively, for potential bone-implant application. Mechanical testing revealed that the HPT sample exhibited the best mechanical performance matching among the Zn–5Ce samples with a high ultimate tensile strength of ∼345 MPa, yield strength of ∼230 MPa, a moderate elongation of ∼11.4%, and macro-hardness of ∼96.6 HB. Electrochemical corrosion and static immersion testing revealed that the HPT sample showed the highest electrochemical corrosion rate of ∼416 μm/y and degradation rate of ∼43.8 μm/y in Hanks' solution among the Zn–5Ce samples, which is suitable for degradation rate requirements for bone-implant application. Bio-tribological testing revealed that the HPT sample showed high bio-tribological properties matching in Hanks’ solution with the lowest friction coefficients of ∼0.530 and moderate wear loss of ∼2.2 mg. Cytocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation assessment revealed that the diluted extract of the HPT sample showed the highest cytocompatibility towards 3T3 and MG-63 cells and osteogenic differentiation performance towards 3T3 cells among the most diluted extracts. Accordingly, the HPT Zn–5Ce sample is expected to be used for high-load-bearing degradable bone-implant devices, including bone fixation and guided bone regeneration systems.

Abstract Whether peripheral immunity prospectively influences brain health remains controversial. This study aims to investigate the longitudinal associations between peripheral immunity markers with incident brain disorders. A total of 161,968 eligible participants from the UK Biobank were included. We investigated the linear and non-linear effects of peripheral immunity markers including differential leukocytes counts, their derived ratios and C-reactive protein (CRP) on the risk of dementia, Parkinson’s disease (PD), stroke, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder (BPAD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety, using Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline models. Linear regression models were used to explore potential mechanisms driven by brain structures. During a median follow-up of 9.66 years, 16,241 participants developed brain disorders. Individuals with elevated innate immunity markers including neutrophils, monocytes, platelets, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) had an increased risk of brain disorders. Among these markers, neutrophils exhibited the most significant correlation with risk of dementia (hazard ratio 1.08, 95% confidence interval 1.04–1.12), stroke (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03–1.09), MDD (HR 1.13, 95% CI 1.10–1.16) and anxiety (HR 1.07, 95% CI 1.04–1.10). Subgroup analysis revealed age-specific and sex-specific associations between innate immunity markers with risk of dementia and MDD. Neuroimaging analysis highlighted the associations between peripheral immunity markers and alterations in multiple cortical, subcortical regions and white matter tracts, typically implicated in dementia and psychiatric disorders. These findings support the hypothesis that neuroinflammation is important to the etiology of various brain disorders, offering new insights into their potential therapeutic approaches.

Monascus species are capable of producing various active metabolites, including monacolin K (MK) and pigments. Studies have shown that the overexpression of the mok I gene from the MK synthesis gene cluster in Monascus species can significantly increase MK production; however, the molecular mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. Therefore, this study focused on the mok I gene of Monascus pilosus to construct overexpression strains of the mok I gene, resulting in high-yield MK production. Sixteen positive transformants were obtained, seven of which produced 9.63% to 41.39% more MK than the original strain, with no citrinin detected in any of the transformants. The qRT-PCR results revealed that the expression levels of mok I in the transformed strains TI-13, TI-24, and TI-25 increased by more than 50% compared to the original strain at various fermentation times, with the highest increase being 10.9-fold. Furthermore, multi-omics techniques were used to analyze the molecular mechanisms underlying enhanced MK production in transformed strains. The results indicated that mok I overexpression may enhance MK synthesis in M. pilosus by regulating the expression of key genes (such as MAO, HPD, ACX, and PLC) and the synthesis levels of key metabolites (such as delta-tocopherol and alpha-linolenic acid) in pathways linked to the biosynthesis of cofactors, the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, tyrosine metabolism, ubiquinone and other terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, and glycerophospholipid metabolism. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further study of the metabolic regulation of MK in Monascus species and for effectively enhancing their MK production.

Background Cognitive control deficits are one of the main symptoms of psychosis. The basic neural oscillation patterns associated with cognitive control are already present in early adolescence. However, as previous studies have focused on adults with psychosis, it is unclear whether neurobiological impairments in cognitive control are present in children and adolescents with first-episode psychosis (FEP) or clinical high-risk (CHR) state for psychosis. Aims To explore the deficits of electroencephalogram related to cognitive control tasks in children and adolescents with FEP and CHR. Method Electroencephalogram was recorded in untreated 48 patients with FEP, 24 patients with CHR and 42 healthy controls aged 10–17 years, while performing the visual oddball task. The N2 amplitude, theta and alpha oscillations were then analysed and compared between groups. Results There was no significant group difference in N2 amplitude (P = 0.099). All groups showed increased theta and alpha oscillations relative to baseline before the stimulus in the frontal, central, left fronto-central and right fronto-central areas. These changes differed significantly between groups, with the FEP group showing significantly smaller theta (P < 0.001) and alpha (P < 0.01) oscillation than healthy controls. Theta and alpha oscillations in the CHR group did not differ significantly from the FEP group and healthy controls. Conclusions These results suggest that neural damage has already occurred in the early stage of psychosis, and that abnormal rhythmic activity of neurons may constitute the pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive dysfunction related to early-onset psychosis.

Abstract Background Identifying the characteristic neurobiological changes of early psychosis is helpful for early clinical diagnosis. However, previous studies on the brain electrophysiology of children and adolescents with psychosis are rare. Methods This study compared P300 amplitude at multiple electrodes between children and adolescents with first-episode schizophrenia (FES, n = 48), children and adolescents with psychosis risk syndrome (PRS, n = 24), and healthy controls (HC, n = 30). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to test the ability of P300 amplitude to distinguish FES, PRS and HC individuals. Results The P300 amplitude in the FES group were significantly lower than those in the HC at the Cz, Pz, and Oz electrodes. The P300 amplitude was also significantly lower in the prodromal group than in the HC at the Pz and Oz electrodes. ROC curve analysis showed that at the Pz electrode, the P300 amplitude evoked by the target and standard stimulus showed high sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the curve value for distinguishing FES from HC individuals. Conclusions This study found early visual P300 deficits in children and adolescents with FES and PRS, with the exclusion of possible influence of medication and chronic medical conditions, suggesting the value of P300 amplitude for the identification of early psychosis.

Abstract Background Continuous increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) has aggravated global warming and promoted urban tree planting projects for many countries. So it’s imperative to select high carbon sequestering landscape tree species while considering their aesthetic values of urban green space. Results 32 tree species were selected as test objects which were commonly used in landscaping in Zhengzhou, a typical northern city of China. To assess the comprehensive carbon sequestration potential of landscape tree species in different plant configuration types, we simultaneously considered their daily net carbon sequestration per unit leaf area (wCO 2 ), daily net carbon sequestration per unit land area (WCO 2 ) and daily net carbon sequestration of the whole plant (QCO 2 ) through cluster analysis. Besides that, we found out the key factors affecting carbon sequestration potential of landscape tree species by redundancy analysis. Conclusion Populus, P Stenoptera, P. acerifolia among large arbors (LA), V odoratissimum, P. Serratifolia, S. oblata among small arbors (SA), and B sinica var. Parvifolia, B. Megistophylla, L quihoui among shrubs (S) were recommended for local urban green space management. Photosynthetic rate (Pn), crown area (CA) and leaf area index (LAI) were the key factors which affected the comprehensive carbon sequestration potential both for LA, SA and S.

The crude protein (CP) content is an important determining factor for the quality of alfalfa, and its accurate and rapid evaluation is a challenge for the industry. A model was developed by combining Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIS) and chemometric analysis. Fourier spectra were collected in the range of 4000~400 cm−1. Adaptive iteratively reweighted penalized least squares (airPLS) and Savitzky–Golay (SG) were used for preprocessing the spectral data; competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and the characteristic peaks of CP functional groups and moieties were used for feature selection; partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest regression (RFR) were used for quantitative prediction modelling. By comparing the combined prediction results of CP content, the predictive performance of airPLST-cars-PLSR-CV was the best, with an RP2 of 0.99 and an RMSEP of 0.053, which is suitable for establishing a small-sample prediction model. The research results show that the combination of the PLSR model can achieve an accurate prediction of the crude protein content of alfalfa forage, which can provide a reliable and effective new detection method for the crude protein content of alfalfa forage.

The use of multielectron Mn2+/MnO2 cathode reaction achieves high‐energy aqueous acid–base asymmetric hybrid batteries. However, the ion crossover through the membrane and the accumulation of unreacted MnO2 lead to serve potential and capacity decay of the cathode during cycling. Herein, the catholyte modulation using the KCl additive and the design of a Prussian blue/Berlin green (PB/BG) redox mediator on the cathode current collector are developed to promote high‐potential Mn2+/MnO2 reaction. The addition of saturated KCl greatly suppresses the ion crossover to maintain the catholyte acidity, thus enabling high‐potential Mn2+/MnO2 reaction and stable high‐voltage discharge plateau of ≈2.2 V for the hybrid battery at a prolonged cycling. The reversible MnO2 deposition is effectively improved by the PB/BG redox mediator, which contributes to significant enhancements in the reversible capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability of the cathode. Importantly, the as‐assembled hybrid battery exhibits the highest energy density of ≈260 Wh kg−1 (based on the mass of the aqueous MnCl2 catholyte and a hydrogen storage anode material) among the previously reported Mn‐based acid–base asymmetric batteries.

Radiation pneumonitis (RP) is a prevalent and fatal complication of thoracic radiotherapy due to the lack of effective treatment options. RP primarily arises from mitochondrial injury in lung epithelial cells. The mitochondrial-derived peptide MOTS-c has demonstrated protective effects against various diseases by mitigating mitochondrial injury. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 20 Gy of lung irradiation (IR) and received daily intraperitoneal injections of MOTS-c for 2 weeks. MOTS-c significantly ameliorated lung tissue damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress caused by radiation. Meanwhile, MOTS-c reversed the apoptosis and mitochondrial damage of alveolar epithelial cells in RP mice. Furthermore, MOTS-c significantly inhibited oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage in MLE-12 cells and primary mouse lung epithelial cells. Mechanistically, MOTS-c increased the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) level and promoted its nuclear translocation. Notably, Nrf2 deficiency abolished the protective function of MOTS-c in mice with RP. In conclusion, MOTS-c alleviates RP by protecting mitochondrial function through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism, indicating that MOTS-c may be a novel potential protective agent against RP.

Recrystallization of polyoxymethylene (POM) in solvent is an effective post-treatment method for manufacturing a better POM product. Herein, the crystallization process of POM in methanol was investigated with the use of a series of equipment. The results reveal that POM crystallization in methanol yields two kinds of particle morphologies, including small particles with lamellar structures branching and growing in all directions and large particles resulting from melt agglomeration. The mechanism of POM crystallization in methanol with two distinct pathways was proposed, in which solution cooling crystallization of POM at higher temperature yields small particles while melt crystallization yields large particles. Furthermore, both non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics of POM were determined. The Avrami equation was employed to derive the crystallization rate constant via data fitting. The activation energy of crystallization was then obtained using the Arrhenius formula. The kinetics suggest that recrystallization of POM in methanol may dissolve and remove substances hindering raw material crystallization, achieving a faster crystallization rate for products.

ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres have been successfully synthesized via the hard templating method, in which CeO2 is used as the support skeleton to avoid ZnO agglomeration. The synthesized ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres possess a large electrochemically active area and high electron transfer owing to the high specific surface area and synergistic effect of ZnO and CeO2. Due to the above advantages, the resulting ZnO-CeO2 hollow spheres display high sensitivities of 1122.86 μA mM−1 cm−2 and 908.53 μA mM−1 cm−2 under a neutral environment for the selective detection of dopamine and uric acid. The constructed electrochemical sensor shows excellent selectivity, stability and recovery for the selective analysis of dopamine and uric acid in actual samples. This study provides a valuable strategy for the synthesis of ZnO-CeO2 hollow nanospheres via the hard templating method as electrocatalysts for the selective detection of dopamine and uric acid.

The input of fresh organic carbon into soils can stimulate organic carbon mineralization via priming effects (PEs). However, little is known about the characterization of PEs in coastal wetlands. We investigated the PEs of two salt marshes (Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis) in the Yellow River Delta by adding 13C-labeled glucose to soils collected from the 0–10 cm and 20–30 cm layers of both salt marshes. The addition of glucose produced a significant positive PE in both soil layers for both vegetation types. There were no differences in the PE of the topsoil layer between the two vegetation types (p > 0.05), whereas the PE of S. salsa was 19.5% higher than that of P. australis in the subsoil layer (p < 0.05). In addition, the topsoil layer showed a higher average PE of 29.1% compared to that of the subsoil layer for both vegetation types (p < 0.05). The differences in the PEs between the two vegetation types and the two layers could be associated with a differential soil salinity, substrate availability, and microbial community structure. Our findings highlight the important role of PEs in regulating the soil carbon storage of coastal salt marshes, which should be considered when assessing and modeling the soil carbon cycling of coastal wetlands.

Abstract A core‐shell‐structured Cu2O@Mn3Cu3O8 (CMCO) nanozyme is constructed to serve as a tumor microenvironment (TME)‐activated copper ionophore to achieve safe and efficient cuproptosis. The Mn3Cu3O8 shell not only prevents exposure of normal tissues to the Cu2O core to reduce systemic toxicity but also exhibits enhanced enzyme‐mimicking activity owing to the better band continuity near the Fermi surface. The glutathione oxidase (GSHOx)‐like activity of CMCO depletes glutathione (GSH), which diminishes the ability to chelate Cu ions, thereby exerting Cu toxicity and inducing cuproptosis in cancer cells. The catalase (CAT)‐like activity catalyzes the overexpressed H2O2 in the TME, thereby generating O2 in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle to enhance cuproptosis. More importantly, the Fenton‐like reaction based on the release of Mn ions and the inactivation of glutathione peroxidase 4 induced by the elimination of GSH results in ferroptosis, accompanied by the accumulation of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species that can cleave stress‐induced heat shock proteins to compromise their protective capacity of cancer cells and further sensitize cuproptosis. CMCO nanozymes are partially sulfurized by hydrogen sulfide in the colorectal TME, exhibiting excellent photothermal properties and enzyme‐mimicking activity. The mild photothermal effect enhances the enzyme‐mimicking activity of the CMCO nanozymes, thus inducing high‐efficiency ferroptosis‐boosted‐cuproptosis.

Abstract BRAF mutations are the oncogenic drivers in colorectal cancer and V600 mutations (Class1), which lead to RAS-independent active monomers, are the most common mutation types. BRAF non-V600 mutants can be further classified as RAS-independent active dimers (Class2) and RAS-dependent impaired kinase (Class3). We retrospectively reviewed the mutational profiles of 328 treatment-naïve colorectal tumors with BRAF mutations detected using capture-based hybrid next-generation sequencing targeting 400 + cancer-related genes. The clinical and genetic distinctions of patients harboring Class1/2/3 BRAF mutations were investigated, which revealed that tumors with Class1 BRAF mutations showed more unique genomic profiles than those with Class2/3 mutations. Also, by using an external dataset from cBioPortal, we demonstrated that patients with Class3 BRAF mutations had the best survival outcomes compared to the other two subgroups. These findings promoted the development of anti-BRAF strategies by distinguishing BRAF mutant subgroups.

Highlights A new type of biochar was prepared by co-pyrolysis of corn stalks and alkali-fused fly ash for Pb(II) removal from wastewater. The high surface area and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of adsorbents made them suitable for wastewater treatment. The main Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms were physisorption, precipitation, cation exchange, and complexation.

Climate warming has substantially advanced the timing of spring leaf-out of woody species at middle and high latitudes, albeit with large differences. Insights in the spatial variation of this climate warming response may therefore help to constrain future trends in leaf-out and its impact on energy, water and carbon balances at global scales. In this study, we used in situ phenology observations of 38 species from 2067 study sites, distributed across the northern hemisphere in China, Europe and the United States, to investigate the latitudinal patterns of spring leaf-out and its sensitivity (ST, advance of leaf-out dates per degree of warming) and correlation (RT, partial correlation coefficient) to temperature during the period 1980–2016. Across all species and sites, we found that ST decreased significantly by 0.15 ± 0.02 d °C−1 °N−1, and RT increased by 0.02 ± 0.001 °N−1 (both at P < 0.001). The latitudinal patterns in RT and ST were explained by the differences in requirements of chilling and thermal forcing that evolved to maximize tree fitness under local climate, particularly climate predictability and summed precipitation during the pre-leaf-out season. Our results thus showed complicated spatial differences in leaf-out responses to ongoing climate warming and indicated that spatial differences in the interactions among environmental cues need to be embedded into large-scale phenology models to improve the simulation accuracy.

IntroductionSatellite observations of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) are increasingly considered a “probe” for photosynthesis. In recent years the emergence of SIF has facilitated regional and global monitoring of vegetation photosynthesis. On the one hand, there is still controversy about the liner or non-linear SIF-GPP relationship and whether high-temperature events will change the linear relationship. On the other hand, it is unclear whether different vegetation types will affect the SIF-GPP. We used GOSIF and MOD17A2 GPP to study the different relationships under five vegetation types during the long-term climate change period and the extreme drought in 2009/2010 in southwest China.MethodsIn this study, curve fitting was used to explore the relationship of SIF and GPP under long time series and extreme drought period.ResultsWe found that during the long-term climate change period, there was a generally linear SIF-GPP relationship under five vegetation types. The correlation is almost universally maintained at the r2 = 0.92 level. During the drought, the extremely high temperature did not change the linear relationship. Besides the farmland ecosystem, the correlation remained at the r2 = 0.85.DiscussionOur study shows that the linear relationship of SIF-GPP is not influenced by drought on a large scale, and there is a general SIF-GPP relationship in different vegetation types. In the case of extreme drought, irrigation measures adopted by farmers in response to heat conditions may affect the SIF-GPP relationship of farmland.

The potential of Stropharia rugosoannulata as a microbial remediation material for cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil lies in its capacity to absorb and accumulate Cd in its mycelia. This study utilized the TMT and LC−MS techniques to conduct integrated proteomic and metabolomic analyses with the aim of investigating the mycelial response mechanisms of S. rugosoannulata under low- and high-Cd stresses. The results revealed that mycelia employed a proactive defense mechanism to maintain their physiological functions, leading to reduced sensitivity to low-Cd stress. The ability of mycelia to withstand high levels of Cd stress was influenced primarily by the comprehensive regulation of six metabolic pathways, which led to a harmonious balance between nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolism and to reductions in oxidative stress and growth inhibition caused by Cd. The results provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in the response of S. rugosoannulata mycelia to Cd stress.

Nonlinear finite element analysis is widely used for structural optimization of the design and the reliability analysis of complex elastomeric components. However, high-precision numerical results cannot be achieved without reliable strain energy functions (SEFs) of the rubber or rubber nanocomposite material. Although hyperelastic constitutive models have been studied for nearly 80 years, selecting one that accurately describes rubber's mechanical response is still a challenge. This work reviews 85 isotropic SEFs based on both the phenomenological theory and the micromechanical network theory proposed from the 1940s to 2019. A fitting algorithm which can realize the automatic fitting optimization and determination of the parameters of all SEFs reviewed is developed. The ability of each SEF to reproduce the experimental data of both the unfilled and highly filled rubber nanocomposite is quantitatively assessed based on a new proposed evaluation index. The top 30 SEFs for the unfilled rubber and the top 14 SEFs for the highly filled rubber nanocomposite are presented in the ranking lists. Finally, some suggestions on how to select an appropriate hyperelastic constitutive model are given, and the perspective on the future progress of constitutive models is summarized.

BackgroundSubstance addiction is a chronic disease which causes great harm to modern society and individuals. At present, many studies have applied EEG analysis methods to the substance addiction detection and treatment. As a tool to describe the spatio-temporal dynamic characteristics of large-scale electrophysiological data, EEG microstate analysis has been widely used, which is an effective method to study the relationship between EEG electrodynamics and cognition or disease.MethodsTo study the difference of EEG microstate parameters of nicotine addicts at each frequency band, we combine an improved Hilbert Huang Transformation (HHT) decomposition with microstate analysis, which is applied to the EEG of nicotine addicts.ResultsAfter using improved HHT-Microstate method, we notice that there is significant difference in EEG microstates of nicotine addicts between viewing smoke pictures group (smoke) and viewing neutral pictures group (neutral). Firstly, there is a significant difference in EEG microstates at full-frequency band between smoke and neutral group. Compared with the FIR-Microstate method, the similarity index of microstate topographic maps at alpha and beta bands had significant differences between smoke and neutral group. Secondly, we find significant class × group interactions for microstate parameters at delta, alpha and beta bands. Finally, the microstate parameters at delta, alpha and beta bands obtained by the improved HHT-microstate analysis method are selected as features for classification and detection under the Gaussian kernel support vector machine. The highest accuracy is 92% sensitivity is 94% and specificity is 91%, which can more effectively detect and identify addiction diseases than FIR-Microstate and FIR-Riemann methods.ConclusionThus, the improved HHT-Microstate analysis method can effectively identify substance addiction diseases and provide new ideas and insights for the brain research of nicotine addiction.

Summary: High myopia (HM) is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. Here, we report a whole-exome sequencing (WES) study in 9,613 HM cases and 9,606 controls of Han Chinese ancestry to pinpoint HM-associated risk variants. Single-variant association analysis identified three newly identified -genetic loci associated with HM, including an East Asian ancestry-specific low-frequency variant (rs533280354) in FKBP5. Multi-ancestry meta-analysis with WES data of 2,696 HM cases and 7,186 controls of European ancestry from the UK Biobank discerned a newly identified European ancestry-specific rare variant in FOLH1. Functional experiments revealed a mechanism whereby a single G-to-A transition at rs533280354 disrupted the binding of transcription activator KLF15 to the promoter of FKBP5, resulting in decreased transcription of FKBP5. Furthermore, burden tests showed a significant excess of rare protein-truncating variants among HM cases involved in retinal blood vessel morphogenesis and neurotransmitter transport.

Cities experience the most intensive level of human activity. As a result, more than 60 % of global CO2 emissions come from urban areas. Urban green space has the dual ecological benefits of increasing carbon sinks and reducing carbon emissions. Creating green space is essential to promoting the development of a low-carbon cycle in a city. Therefore, exploring the quantitative structure and spatial pattern optimization of urban green space from the perspective of carbon balance can effectively improve the total carbon sink of a city. Based on the carbon balance theory, this paper first evaluates the carbon offsetting capability (COC) of urban green space in Beijing in 2020. Then, CO2 emissions is predicted, COC improvement targets are established, and the quantity of standard green space is calculated under these targets in 2035. A multi-objective programming model (MOP) is constructed to derive the optimal solution to determine the amount of standard green space needed to meet the constraints of urban development planning and maximize the carbon sink. A circuit model is used to identify the priority distribution area of green space in 2035, and the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model is used to simulate the spatial pattern optimization results. The results show that: (1) CO2 emissions in Beijing caused by human activities in 2020 totaled about 240.12 million tons, the net absorption of CO2 of green space was about 8.99 million tons, and the COC was about 3.74 %; (2) in 2035, Beijing’s CO2 emissions will be about 265.40 million tons. Under 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % COC improvement gradients, the demand for standard green space will be 12,204.80 km2, 12,763.80 km2, 13,353.85 km2, 13,943.90 km2, and 14,533.96 km2, respectively; (3) the results of the Multi-Objective Programming (MOP) model show that the optimal COC in 2035 is 4.19 %, and the standard green space quantity is 13,012.24 km2; (4) In 2035, Beijing’s urban green space will be characterized by a network structure of circular radiation. The optimized COC is 4.37 %, and the standard green space quantity is 13,577.86 km2, which is largely consistent with the MOP model’s predicted result. This study can provide theoretical and methodological support for urban green space planning, and expand nature-based solutions for the low-carbon development in cities.

BackgroundInternet use is an important means of accessing health-related information. Identifying the associations between internet use and health outcomes could provide insight into strategies for improving public health among middle-aged and older adults (45 years and up). ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the relationship between internet use and health outcomes in middle-aged and older adults. MethodsData were obtained from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Physical, mental, and subjective health were assessed using the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Scale, the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the 3-level Self-Rated Health Scale, respectively. The chi-square test and rank sum test were used to explore whether internet use was associated with health status. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine this association further after controlling for the confounding factors. This was an initial effort to treat hemophiliac hematoma by ultrasound-guided intratumoral drainage and lavage with urokinase after adequate supplementation of coagulation factors. Two patients with severe hemophilia underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage in combination with lavage using urokinase. After 5-day and 3-day treatments, respectively, intramuscular hematomas in both patients disappeared, compression symptom was relieved, and no obvious adverse reactions or serious complications were observed during the treatment or follow-up. These findings suggest that ultrasound-guided drainage combined with lavage using urokinase is an immediate, safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for intramuscular hematomas in hemophiliacs, avoiding potential complications by surgical resection with relatively low treatment cost.

The catalytic treatment of wastewater serves as an effective way to solve the problem of water pollution, in which non-homogeneous Fenton catalysts are widely used. However, the activity enhancement of non-homogeneous Fenton catalysts still remains a great challenge. Herein, self-assembled BiFeO3/CeO2 nanocatalytic materials with different molar ratios were successfully fabricated by a suspension blending method, following which the structure evolution was determined by various characterizations. The catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and saffron T (ST) were performed over the BiFeO3/CeO2 nanocatalytic materials. It was found that the 0.2BiFeO3:0.8CeO2 nanocatalytic materials exhibited an 80.8% degradation efficiency for RhB. The 0.6BiFeO3:0.4CeO2 nanocatalytic materials reached 81.1% and 48.7% for ST and MB, respectively. The BiFeO3/CeO2 nanocatalytic materials also showed a good stability during several cycles. The combination of CeO2 with BiFeO3 led to an enhanced activity for dye degradation, probably due to the electron transfer from ≡Fe2+ to ≡Ce4+. This study provides a new approach to dye degradation by using Fenton catalytic systems.

Abstract Background Understanding the host genetic architecture and viral immunity contributes to the development of effective vaccines and therapeutics for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Alterations of immune responses in peripheral blood mononuclear cells play a crucial role in the detrimental progression of COVID-19. However, the effects of host genetic factors on immune responses for severe COVID-19 remain largely unknown. Methods We constructed a computational framework to characterize the host genetics that influence immune cell subpopulations for severe COVID-19 by integrating GWAS summary statistics (N = 969,689 samples) with four independent scRNA-seq datasets containing healthy controls and patients with mild, moderate, and severe symptom (N = 606,534 cells). We collected 10 predefined gene sets including inflammatory and cytokine genes to calculate cell state score for evaluating the immunological features of individual immune cells. Results We found that 34 risk genes were significantly associated with severe COVID-19, and the number of highly expressed genes increased with the severity of COVID-19. Three cell subtypes that are CD16+monocytes, megakaryocytes, and memory CD8+T cells were significantly enriched by COVID-19-related genetic association signals. Notably, three causal risk genes of CCR1, CXCR6, and ABO were highly expressed in these three cell types, respectively. CCR1 +CD16+monocytes and ABO + megakaryocytes with significantly up-regulated genes, including S100A12, S100A8, S100A9, and IFITM1, confer higher risk to the dysregulated immune response among severe patients. CXCR6 + memory CD8+ T cells exhibit a notable polyfunctionality including elevation of proliferation, migration, and chemotaxis. Moreover, we observed an increase in cell-cell interactions of both CCR1 + CD16+monocytes and CXCR6 + memory CD8+T cells in severe patients compared to normal controls among both PBMCs and lung tissues. The enhanced interactions of CXCR6 + memory CD8+T cells with epithelial cells facilitate the recruitment of this specific population of T cells to airways, promoting CD8+T cell-mediated immunity against COVID-19 infection. Conclusions We uncover a major genetics-modulated immunological shift between mild and severe infection, including an elevated expression of genetics-risk genes, increase in inflammatory cytokines, and of functional immune cell subsets aggravating disease severity, which provides novel insights into parsing the host genetic determinants that influence peripheral immune cells in severe COVID-19.

BackgroundVocational education is an important part of high school education in China. However, there is little research on high school students' mental health. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of suicidal behavior (SB) among this population and the mediating role of insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress in the relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and SB using a structural equation model.MethodsA cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among several vocational high school students in Hunan Province, and 7,968 valid questionnaires were obtained. General demographic data and data from the Dual-Mode Self-Control Scale, Athens Insomnia Scale, Depression Anxiety Stress scale-21, and Revised Chen Internet Addiction Scale were collected. A structural equation model was used to explore the different pathways from IA to SB.ResultsAmong the participants, 37.7, 15.7, and 21.8% reported suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts, respectively. The structural equation model confirmed that IA was indirectly related to SB and was mediated by insomnia and/or depression, anxiety, and stress.LimitationsFirst, we only recruited students from vocational schools in Hunan Province, therefore, the sample may not represent the entire population of vocational students in China. Second, self-report scales were used in this study, and clinical diagnosis required professional interviews. Third, since this study had a cross-sectional design, the causal relationship between the variables could not be determined.ConclusionsThe prevalence of SB among vocational high school students in China was significantly high. The prevention of SB related to IA can be attributed to the improvement of insomnia and emotional problems.

BackgroundPrevious studies have established a strong association between depression and suicidal behaviors, yet the relationship between anxiety and suicidal behaviors remains unclear. This study examines whether anxiety and depression are independent risk factors for suicidal behaviors in medical college students, and further, whether anxiety may increase the greater risk of suicidal behaviors (SB) in participants with depression.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted among 4,882 medical students. Demographic information, anxiety, and depression data were collected using online questionnaires or through a widely used social media app named WeChat.ResultsAnxiety and depression were independent risk factors for suicidal behaviors, and levels of risk correlated positively with the severity of both anxiety and depressive symptoms. A dose–response relationship was identified between the severity of anxiety and the risk of SB, as well as the severity of depression and SB. Furthermore, anxiety increased the risk of suicidal behaviors in participants with depression, with a dose–response relationship between the severity of anxiety symptoms and the risk of SB.ConclusionThe findings highlight the importance of screening for anxiety and depressive symptoms in medical college students, as well as reducing anxiety in addition to depressive symptoms in treatment. This study provides valuable data as a reference for clinicians for suicide risk assessments.

Abstract Background With an increasing number of critically ill patients, attention should be paid to both their physical health and mental health. The objective of this study is to examine the links between depression and social capital among critically ill patients. Methods Data for 1043 patients with critical illnesses was collected with a stratified cluster random sampling method in rural Shandong, China. Depression symptoms were measured using a short form version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) and the total scores of them were dichotomized. We associated structural social capital with social networks, social participation, and social support. Cognitive social capital includes the degree of availability of social trust and reciprocity. Binary logistic regression was used to explore whether social capital was significantly associated with depression among patients with critical illnesses. Results We found that 68.5% of the critically ill patients in our sample population had depression. CESD-10 scores were negatively correlated with social capital, including occupations of their frequent contacts, social trust in relatives and friends, distance to the nearest medical institution and medical assistance convenience from non-spouse. In addition, low economic status, and low self-rated health were more significantly correlated with depression in critically ill patients. Conclusions Our findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the mental health of critically ill patients and more formal society, community and government support form given, particularly in rural China.
