This paper reviews the existing literature to understand the correlation between job satisfaction and STEM teaching, by adopting a best evidence review methodology. Four key job satisfaction theories are elaborated, namely Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory, Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory, job characteristics model, and the dispositional approach to job satisfaction. Considering the limited amount of research conducted in examining job satisfaction theories in relation to teachers, these theories are utilized in this paper to draw parallels between school teachers and STEM education delivery, through description and interpretation. This review presents the possible implications for STEM teaching and the need for further research assessing teachers’ satisfaction and the impact it has on STEM delivery.

Quality Education and Gender Equality are among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. Girls and women are the greatest untapped population who would contribute enormously to the growth of innovation. With evolving policies and institutional efforts to promote women scientists globally, there is a significant gap still lies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. A recent ground-breaking report of UNESCO reveals that only 35% of STEM students in higher education are women who result in 28% of the STEM workforce across all the world’s researchers. Differences are observed much wider in the hard sciences like mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. Other international research also shows that women make up just 12–15% of all engineers around the world. However, a recent survey report by the Royal Academy of Engineering revealed that over 80% of female engineers are happy in their job and 98% of women engineers find their job rewarding. Despite these facts, most of the nations are losing potential women engineers at every stage of life, and it starts from a young age because of bias and misconceptions in media. There are societal, cultural, institutional factors, and belief systems which are impediments to women in STEM. Gender stereotypes are part of societal belief and govern the attitudes towards female and male roles, their occupations, and their perception of masculine and feminine work. There are many myths and stereotype in a society which push women back in engineering career like girls are bad in Mathematics, engineering is ‘too difficult’ and require physical strength. Divergent attitudes formed by girls and boys in childhood and systemic biases limit the range of career options and opportunities available to them in adulthood. The development of antibiotic resistant superbugs poses significant threat to global healthcare. With the overuse of antibiotic medication over time, these superbugs have evolved to fight the effects of pharmacological therapies causing death to patients with easily treatable infections. For this reason, research has shifted towards investigating ways in which infection can be cured without antibiotic medication. Research has found that some nanostructured materials have been found to exhibit antibacterial behaviours either through antibiofouling or bactericidal (killing) mechanisms. These nanostructures have an inherent property which repels or kills bacteria upon physical contact, without the need for chemical therapy. This review gives a perspective on the current state of research which uses nanotechnology to fabricate antibacterial surfaces. In addition, this review presents various biosensing techniques for human biosensing and bacteria sensing, particularly for food and water borne pathogens. This review also discusses future directions for ways in which these two research areas can be combined to develop a nanosensing platform which detects bacteria in hospital environments, helping to reduce waiting times between sampling and detection, length of patient hospital stays, patient discomfort and burdens to the healthcare system, as well as control and contain the spread of infection in hospital environments.

With many unanswered questions about SARS-CoV-2, the research community needs to immediately prioritize research areas in the fight against the current COVID-19 pandemic. An accelerated and coordinated multidisciplinary research effort is needed from the wider scientific community in many sectors from vaccine and antiviral development to digital technology. This mini-review highlights key research opportunities such as vaccine development, diagnostics, antiviral masks, environmental transmission and antiviral treatments, and outlines how systematic efforts can be focused in these key areas. Some alternate strategies such as the use of novel nanostructured surfaces to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19 are presented.

The rapid emergence and global spread of the COVID-19 causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its subsequent mutated strains has caused unprecedented health, economic, and social devastation. Respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through both direct and indirect channels, including aerosol respiratory droplets, contamination of inanimate surfaces (fomites), and direct person-to-person contact. Current methods of virus inactivation on surfaces include chemicals and biocides, and while effective, continuous and repetitive cleaning of all surfaces is not always viable. Recent work in the field of biomaterials engineering has established the antibacterial effects of hydrothermally synthesized TiO2 nanostructured surfaces against both Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. The current study investigates the effectiveness of said TiO2 nanostructured surfaces against two enveloped human coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 and HCoV-NL63, and nonenveloped HRV-16 for surface-based inactivation. Results show that structured surfaces reduced infectious viral loads of SARS-CoV-2 (5 log), HCoV-NL63 (3 log), and HRV-16 (4 log) after 5 h, compared to nonstructured and tissue culture plastic control surfaces. Interestingly, infectious virus remained present on control tissue culture plastic after 7 h exposure. These encouraging results establish the potential use of nanostructured surfaces to reduce the transmission and spread of both enveloped and nonenveloped respiratory viruses, by reducing their infectious period on a surface. The dual antiviral and antibacterial properties of these surfaces support their potential application in a wide variety of settings such as hospitals and healthcare environments, public transport and community hubs.

Nanotopographic surfaces are proven to be successful in killing bacterial cells upon contact. This non-chemical bactericidal property has paved an alternative way of fighting bacterial colonization and associated problems, especially the issue of bacteria evolving resistance against antibiotic and antiseptic agents. Recent advancements in nanotopographic bactericidal surfaces have made them suitable for many applications in medical and industrial sectors. The bactericidal effect of nanotopographic surfaces is classically studied under static conditions, but the actual potential applications do have fluid flow in them. In this study, we have studied how fluid flow can affect the adherence of bacterial cells on nanotopographic surfaces. Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species were tested under varying fluid flow rates for their retention and viability after flow exposure. The total number of adherent cells for both species was reduced in the presence of flow, but there was no flowrate dependency. There was a significant reduction in the number of live cells remaining on nanotopographic surfaces with an increasing flowrate for both species. Conversely, we observed a flowrate-independent increase in the number of adherent dead cells. Our results indicated that the presence of flow differentially affected the adherent live and dead bacterial cells on nanotopographic surfaces. This could be because dead bacterial cells were physically pierced by the nano-features, whereas live cells adhered via physiochemical interactions with the surface. Therefore, fluid shear was insufficient to overcome adhesion forces between the surface and dead cells. Furthermore, hydrodynamic forces due to the flow can cause more planktonic and detached live cells to collide with nano-features on the surface, causing more cells to lyse. Health care is uncertain, dynamic, and fast growing. With digital technologies set to revolutionise the industry, hospital capacity optimisation and planning have never been more relevant. The purposes of this article are threefold. The first is to identify the current state of the art, to summarise/analyse the key achievements, and to identify gaps in the body of research. The second is to synthesise and evaluate that literature to create a holistic framework for understanding hospital capacity planning and optimisation, in terms of physical elements, process, and governance. Third, avenues for future research are sought to inform researchers and practitioners where they should best concentrate their efforts. In conclusion, we find that prior research has typically focussed on individual parts, but the hospital is one body that is made up of many interdependent parts. It is also evident that past attempts considering entire hospitals fail to incorporate all the detail that is necessary to provide solutions that can be implemented in the real world, across strategic, tactical and operational planning horizons. A holistic approach is needed that includes ancillary services, equipment medicines, utilities, instrument trays, supply chain and inventory considerations.

Stainless steel is extensively used in various biomedical engineering and hospital applications, including surgical equipment and furniture. Strong adhesion of bacteria and viruses on metal surfaces can restrict long-term utilization for biomedical applications. This study aims to develop an improved electrochemical etching protocol for the anodization of 316 L grade stainless steel (10 × 15 mm) to fabricate nanostructures for biomedical and hospital applications. Anodizing conditions were optimized using two different electrolyte solutions; HNO3: H2SO4 (1:1) and HNO3, by varying applied potential, electrolyte concentration and anodizing time. Morphology and topography of the anodized surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). AC and DC electrochemical techniques were used to further characterize the corrosion behaviour of the nanostructured surfaces. Electrochemical optimization produced two different nanostructured surfaces with the anodizing conditions of (1) 50% HNO3 at 0.465 A/cm2 for 1 min (surface 1), and (2) 0.5 M HNO3 + H2SO4 (1:1) at 0.366 A/cm2 for 5 min (surface 2). Both processes produced nanoscale surface roughness with varying corrosion susceptibility. Surfaces anodized using 50% HNO3 comprised of ‘hierarchical roughness’ with dense spikes (10 – 20 nm in diameter), covering rock candy-like protrusion (10 - 15 µm diameter). Whereas the second set of conditions produced single scale roughness with a terrace-like topography with nanoscale ridges of 34.8 ± 1.2 nm in width atop microscale hills. Surface 2 possessed improved corrosion resistance through the formation an oxide film, while the surface 1 was more susceptible to corrosion. Nanopatterned surfaces administer antibacterial activity through contact‐induced mechanical stresses and strains, which can be modulated by changing the nanopattern’s radius, spacing and height. However, due to conflicting recommendations throughout the theoretical literature with poor agreement to reported experimental trends, it remains unclear whether these key dimensions—particularly radius and spacing—should be increased or decreased to maximize bactericidal efficiency. It is shown here that a potential failure of biophysical models lies in neglecting any out-of‐plane effects of nanopattern contact. To highlight this, stresses induced by a nanopattern were studied via an analytical model based on minimization of strain and adhesion energy. The in‐plane (areal) and out‐of‐plane (contact pressure) stresses at equilibrium were derived, as well as a combined stress (von Mises), which comprises both. Contour plots were produced to illustrate which nanopatterns elicited the highest stresses over all combinations of tip radius between 0 and 100 nm and center spacing between 0 and 200 nm. Considering both the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane stresses drastically transformed the contour plots from those when only in‐plane stress was evaluated, clearly favoring small tipped, tightly packed nanopatterns. In addition, the effect of changes to radius and spacing in terms of the combined stress showed the best qualitative agreement with previous reported trends in killing efficiency. Together, the results affirm that the killing efficiency of a nanopattern can be maximized by simultaneous reduction in tip radius and increase in nanopattern packing ratio (i.e., radius/spacing). These findings provide a guide for the design of highly bactericidal nanopatterned surfaces.

Since the discovery of the bactericidal properties of cicada wing surfaces, there has been a surge in the number of studies involving antibacterial nanostructured surfaces (NSS). Studies show that there are many parameters (and thus, thousands of parameter combinations) that influence the bactericidal efficiency (BE) of these surfaces. Researchers attempted to correlate these parameters to BE but have so far been unsuccessful. This paper presents a meta-analysis and perspective on bactericidal NSS, aiming to identify trends and gaps in the literature and to provide insights for future research. We have attempted to synthesize data from a wide range of published studies and establish trends in the literature on bactericidal NSS. Numerous research gaps and findings based on correlations of various parameters are presented here, which will assist in the design of efficient bactericidal NSS and shape future research. Traditionally, it is accepted that BE of NSS depends on the bacterial Gram-stain type. However, this review found that factors beyond Gram-stain type are also influential. Furthermore, it is found that despite their higher BE, hydrophobic NSS are less commonly studied for their bactericidal effect. Interestingly, the impacts of surface hydrophobicity and roughness on the bactericidal effect were found to be influenced by a Gram-stain type of the tested bacteria. In addition, cell motility and shape influence BE, but research attention into these factors is lacking. It was found that hydrophobic NSS demonstrate more promising results than their hydrophilic counterparts; however, these surfaces have been overlooked. Confirming the common belief of the influence of nanofeature diameter on bactericidal property, this analysis shows the feature aspect ratio is also decisive. NSS fabricated on silicon substrates perform better than their titanium counterparts, and the success of these silicon structures maybe attributed to the fabrication processes. These insight

Background and purpose: The hemodynamic environment of an atherosclerotic plaque varies along the longitudinal direction. Investigating the changes in plaque morphology and its biomechanical environment along the longitudinal direction and their correlations will enhance our understanding of plaque progression and arterial remodeling. Methods: Six male patients with carotid stenosis >70% were recruited. Multisequence high-resolution MRI was performed at the carotid bifurcation. Carotid endarterectomy was performed following MRI, and the plaque tissue was collected for histological and mechanical testing. Patient-specific biomechanical modeling and simulations were conducted to calculate the mechanical stresses (wall shear stress [WSS] and von Mises stress [VMS]). Changes in plaque cross-sectional morphology, WSS, and VMS as well as their correlations were evaluated. Results: Positive correlations were found between % stenosis and % inflammation (MA) (p = 0.019), % lipid area and % MA (p = 0.026), and % calcification area and VMS (p = 0.007). Negative correlations were found between VMS and % stenosis (p = 0.028) and VMS and average WSS (p = 0.034). Moreover, the peak stresses and neovessels were found to be in the shoulder regions. High-stress concentrations were found in the interface regions of the calcification and surrounding tissue, thereby increasing plaque vulnerability. Conclusions: Correlations between the morphology and stresses suggest that arterial remodeling is a dynamic interaction between mechanical environment and plaque progression resulting in plaque heterogeneity. Our finding indicates that plaque heterogeneity is associated with plaque progression and can be combined with mechanical stresses for identifying high-risk plaques.

Nanopatterned surfaces are believed to kill bacteria through physical deformation, a mechanism that has immense potential against biochemical resistance. Because of its elusive nature, this mechanism is mostly understood through biophysical modeling. Problematically, accurate descriptions of the contact mechanics and various boundary conditions involved in the bacteria-nanopattern interaction remain to be seen. This may underpin conflicting predictions, found throughout the literature, regarding two important aspects of the mechanism—that is, its critical action site and relationship with geometry. Herein, a robust computational analysis of bacteria-nanopattern interaction is performed using a three-dimensional finite element modeling that incorporates relevant continuum mechanical properties, multilayered envelope structure, and adhesion interaction conditions. The model is applied to more accurately study the elusory mechanism and its enhancement via nanopattern geometry. Additionally, micrographs of bacteria adhered on a nanopatterned cicada wing are examined to further inform and verify the major modeling predictions. Together, the results indicate that nanopatterned surfaces do not kill bacteria predominantly by rupture in between protruding pillars as previously thought. Instead, nondevelopable deformation about pillar tips is more likely to create a critical site at the pillar apex, which delivers significant in-plane strains and may locally rupture and penetrate the cell. The computational analysis also demonstrates that envelope deformation is increased by adhesion to nanopatterns with smaller pillar radii and spacing. These results further progress understanding of the mechanism of nanopatterned surfaces and help guide their design for enhanced bactericidal efficiency.

This article considers how to allocate additional physical resources within airport terminals. An optimization model was developed to determine where additional resources should be placed to minimise passenger waiting times. The objective function is stochastic and can only be evaluated using discrete event simulation. As this model is stochastic and nonlinear, a Simulated Annealing (SA) metaheuristic was implemented and tested. The SA algorithm repeatedly perturbs a resource allocation solution using one of two methods. The first method is creating new solution randomly in each iteration, and the second method is local search that is mimicked by any move of the current solution of x solution chosen randomly in its neighborhood. Numerical testing shows that the random approach is best, and solutions that are 12.11% better can be obtained.

In this letter, we report the ability of the nanostructured aluminum Al 6063 alloy surfaces to inactivate the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). There was no recoverable viable virus after 6 h of exposure to the nanostructured surface, elucidating a 5-log reduction compared to a flat Al 6063 surface. The nanostructured surfaces were fabricated using wet-etching techniques which generated nanotextured, randomly aligned ridges approximately 23 nm wide on the Al 6063 alloy surfaces. In addition to the excellent mechanical resilience properties previously shown, the etched surfaces have also demonstrated superior corrosion resistance compared to the control surfaces. Such nanostructured surfaces have the potential to be used in healthcare environment such as hospitals and public spaces to reduce the surface transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and combat COVID-19.

This paper proposes an advanced simulation-optimization approach to evaluate and optimize the passenger flows within international airports. This approach allocates resources intelligently during the simulation process and balances demand and service quality. The resource allocation performed by our Advanced Resource Management (ARM) algorithm was used to develop an integrated system for arranging resources, identifying the proper resources, and allocating them throughout the model. It was used to investigate the influences of dierent sta allocation techniques on the inbound and outbound processes of an airport terminal. The purpose of the proposed simulation-optimization approach is to enhance passenger satisfaction through ensuring reasonable wait times during processing at the lowest cost possible (minimal sta hours).

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory CVD associated with the accumulation of plaque activated by the complex interactions between systemic, hemodynamic and biological factors. Thus, identification of plaque vulnerability is essential for the prevention of acute events and treatment of the disease. Despite, advanced imaging technologies, patient-specific computational simulations and availability of experimental data, there are still challenges in developing accurate risk stratification techniques. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the carotid plaque components structurally (histological analysis and immunostaining), mechanically (Nanoindentation tests) and chemically (Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) micro-spectroscopy). The preliminary results showed that arterial remodelling is a dynamic interaction between mechanical forces and plaque progression. The biological content and composition of human atherosclerotic plaque tissue have been shown to significantly influence the mechanical response of samples. This data represents a step towards an enhanced understanding of the behaviour of human atherosclerotic plaque. Future large-scale experimental studies with more cross-sections along the length of the plaque could be used to develop a risk stratification technique.

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is a catastrophic event that contributes to mortality and long-term disability. A better understanding of the plaque mechanical behavior is essential for the identification of vulnerable plaques pre-rupture. Plaque is subjected to a natural dynamic mechanical environment under hemodynamic loading. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanical response of plaque tissue under cyclic loading conditions. Moreover, experimental data of such mechanical properties are fundamental for more clinically relevant biomechanical modeling and numerical simulations for risk stratification. This study aims to experimentally and numerically characterize the stress-relaxation and cyclic mechanical behavior of carotid plaque tissue. Instron microtester equipped with a custom-developed setup was used for the experiments. Carotid plaque samples excised at endarterectomy were subjected to uniaxial tensile, stress-relaxation, and cyclic loading protocols. Thirty percent of the underlying load level obtained from the uniaxial tensile test results was used to determine the change in mechanical properties of the tissue over time under a controlled testing environment (Control tests). The stress-relaxation test data was used to calibrate the hyperelastic (neo-Hookean, Ogden, Yeoh) and linear viscoelastic (Prony series) material parameters. The normalized relaxation force increased initially and slowly stabilized toward the end of relaxation phase, highlighting the viscoelastic behavior. During the cyclic tests, there was a decrease in the peak force as a function of the cycle number indicating mechanical distension due to repeated loading that varied with different frequencies. The material also accumulated residual deformation, which increased with the cycle number. This trend showed softening behavior of the samples. The results of this preliminary study provide an enhanced understanding of in vivo stress-relaxation and cyclic behavior of the human
