Based on the precipitation and minimum temperature data observed at the stations from 1981 to 2020, two types of winter cold air activity events in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River are identified, which are strong cooling events with precipitation and only strong cooling events without precipitation (referred to as “cold-wet” and “cold-dry” events), respectively. The atmospheric circulation differences and the characteristics of cold and warm air activities in the two type events, and their connection with the jet stream are also examined. The results show that the frequency of cold air activity events in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River decreases year by year, among which the frequency of cold-dry events decreases and the frequency of cold-wet events increases significantly. In addition, the cooling amplitude of cold-wet events is greater than that with no precipitation. When cold-wet events occur, the upper-level subtropical jet moves northward and the polar front jet is weaker. There is a tilting ridge in the middle level and the subtropical high is located westward. In the lower-level, the Siberian high is strengthened and the warm and humid air flowing from the southwest converges and ascends in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. However, when cold-dry events occur, the subtropical jet in the upper level is weaker and the polar front jet is stronger. The trough and ridge in the middle level are weaker and the subtropical high is located eastward. In the lower level, the Siberian high is located southward and the dry air flowing from the north diverges and sinks in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In addition, compared with cold-wet events, the jet stream intensity index and the meridional wind position index fluctuate more frequently during cold-dry events, and the cold air activity duration is shorter.

BCC-CSM2-HR is a high-resolution version of the Beijing Climate Center (BCC) Climate System Model (T266 in the atmosphere and 1/4∘ latitude × 1/4∘ longitude in the ocean). Its development is on the basis of the medium-resolution version BCC-CSM2-MR (T106 in the atmosphere and 1∘ latitude × 1∘ longitude in the ocean) which is the baseline for BCC participation in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). This study documents the high-resolution model, highlights major improvements in the representation of atmospheric dynamical core and physical processes. BCC-CSM2-HR is evaluated for historical climate simulations from 1950 to 2014, performed under CMIP6-prescribed historical forcing, in comparison with its previous medium-resolution version BCC-CSM2-MR. Observed global warming trends of surface air temperature from 1950 to 2014 are well captured by both BCC-CSM2-MR and BCC-CSM2-HR. Present-day basic atmospheric mean states during the period from 1995 to 2014 are then evaluated at global scale, followed by an assessment on climate variabilities in the tropics including the tropical cyclones (TCs), the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratosphere. It is shown that BCC-CSM2-HR represents the global energy balance well and can realistically reproduce the main patterns of atmospheric temperature and wind, precipitation, land surface air temperature, and sea surface temperature (SST). It also improves the spatial patterns of sea ice and associated seasonal variations in both hemispheres. The bias of the double intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), obvious in BCC-CSM2-MR, almost disappears in BCC-CSM2-HR. TC activity in the tropics is increased with resolution enhanced. The cycle of ENSO, the eastward propagative feature and convection intensity of MJO, and the downward propagation of QBO in BCC-CSM2-HR are all in a better agreement with observations than their counterparts in BCC-CSM2-MR. Some imperfections are, however, noted in BCC-CSM2-HR, such as the excessive cloudiness in the eastern basin of the tropical Pacific with cold SST biases and the insufficient number of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic.

This study investigates the concurrent location and intensity changes of the East Asian polar front jet (EAPJ) and subtropical jet (EASJ) on decadal time scale using NCEP/NCAR, ERA5 and JRA-55 reanalysis data, along with the relationship with the mid-high latitude circulation changes. Results show that EAPJ was intensified accompanied by the weakening of EASJ after 1985, and shifted equatorward in conjunction with the poleward migration of EASJ after 1999. The three-dimensional structures of the atmospheric circulation over East Asia exhibited distinct changes corresponding to the two regime shifts. Dipole anomalous sea level pressure (SLP) between the Arctic and the North Pacific, a NAM-like geopotential height anomalous pattern, and a deepened polar vortex occurred after 1985, accompanied with the out-of-phase intensity changes of the two jets. In comparison, dipole SLP anomalies between the mid-high latitudes and Tibetan Plateau, a zonal wave train over Eurasia accompanied with a meridional wave train over East Asia, and a polar vortex shifting toward the Siberia were observed after 1999, when the two jets approached each other. These circulation changes exerted pronounced effects on the East Asian climate anomalies. After the mid-1980s, the positive SLP anomaly over the northern North Pacific led to decreased land-sea SLP contrast, and the positive mid-tropospheric geopotential height center near Lake Baikal implied weakened East Asian trough (EAT). Such changes favored the warming of southern East Asia and the weakening of the southern mode of East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). In contrast, the high latitude positive SLP anomalies denoted enhanced Siberian high (SH) and the East Asian meridional wave train resulted in tilted EAT after the late 1990s, benefitting the cold anomalies over northern Eurasia with the northern mode of EAWM intensified. Possible mechanisms for the decadal changes of the jets are discussed from the perspective of the dynamic forcing of the synoptic-scale transient eddy activities (STEA), and the thermal forcings from the East Asian landmass, the North Pacific sea surface and the Arctic sea ice cover.

Understanding the relationship between probabilistic and deterministic prediction skills is of important significance for the study of seasonal forecasting and verification. Based on the Brier skill score methodology, we have previously found a theoretical relationship between the probabilistic resolution skill and the deterministic correlation (i.e., anomaly correlation; AC) skill and a lack of necessary or consistent relationship between the probabilistic reliability skill and the deterministic skill in dynamical seasonal prediction. Here, we further theoretically investigate the relationship between the probabilistic relative operating characteristic (ROC) skill and the deterministic skill. The ROC measures the discrimination attribute of probabilistic forecast quality, another important attribute besides the resolution and reliability. With some simplified assumptions, we first derive theoretical expressions for the hit and false-alarm rates that are basic ingredients for the ROC curve, then demonstrate a sole dependence of the ROC curve on the AC, and finally analytically derive a relationship between the related ROC score and the AC. Such a theoretically derived ROC-AC relationship is further examined using dynamical models’ ensemble seasonal hindcasts, which is well verified. The finding here along with our previous findings implies that the discrimination and resolution attributes of probabilistic seasonal forecast skill are intrinsically equivalent to the corresponding deterministic skill, while the reliability appears to be the fundamental attribute of the probabilistic skill that differs from the deterministic skill, which constitutes an understanding of the fundamental similarities and difference between the two types of seasonal forecasting skills and predictability and can offer important implications for the study of seasonal forecasting and verification.

Huang et al. recently reported that opposite phases of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) can affect the shift of the East Asian polar front jet (EAPJ) and the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) in the boreal winter. To give a full image of the relationship among the IPO, AMO, and concurrent variation of jets throughout the whole year, this study investigates the changes in summer jets response to the combinations of the IPO and AMO, and mostly focuses on the quantitative analysis in the role of the IPO and AMO. Both of the diagnostic analysis and atmospheric model simulations confirm that combinations of the negative phase of the IPO (“−IPO”) and the positive phase of the AMO (“+AMO”) can significantly enhance the EAPJ and reduce the EASJ in the summer, via the meridional temperature gradient and the Eady growth rate, and vice versa in the “+IPO −AMO” combination. The reanalysis data show that this relationship is particularly evident between the periods of 1999–2014 and 1979–98. Based on the simulations, the multilinear regression has indicated that −IPO plays a more important role than +AMO, particularly for the reduced EASJ. We have further revealed two pathways of the stationary Rossby wave activity anomaly, eastward from the North Atlantic to East Asia along 60°N and westward from the North Pacific to East Asia along 40°N. The two activities are associated with anomalous anticyclone along the active regions between EAPJ and EASJ, and therefore affect the jet variations.

Light–moderate precipitation is projected to decrease whereas heavy precipitation may increase under greenhouse gas (GHG)-induced global warming, while atmospheric convective available potential energy (CAPE) over most of the globe and convective inhibition (CIN) over land are projected to increase. The underlying processes for these precipitation changes are not fully understood. Here, projected precipitation changes are analyzed using 3-hourly data from simulations by a fully coupled climate model, and their link to the CAPE and CIN changes is examined. The model approximately captures the spatial patterns in the mean precipitation frequencies and the significant correlation between the precipitation frequencies or intensity and CAPE over most of the globe or CIN over tropical oceans seen in reanalysis, and it projects decreased light–moderate precipitation (0.01 < P ≤ 1 mm h−1) but increased heavy precipitation (P > 1 mm h−1) in a warmer climate. Results show that most of the light–moderate precipitation events occur under low-CAPE and/or low-CIN conditions, which are projected to decrease greatly in a warmer climate as increased temperature and humidity shift many of such cases into moderate–high CAPE or CIN cases. This results in large decreases in the light–moderate precipitation events. In contrast, increases in heavy precipitation result primarily from its increased probability under given CAPE and CIN, with a secondary contribution from the CAPE/CIN frequency changes. The increased probability for heavy precipitation partly results from a shift of the precipitation histogram toward higher intensity that could result from a uniform percentage increase in precipitation intensity due to increased water vapor in a warmer climate.

Extraordinarily frequent and long-lasting snowstorms affected China in January 2008, causing extensive social and economic damages. The potential predictability of such extreme events on the sub-seasonal timescale has been evaluated using results from the hindcast experiments by the Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model. The spatial distribution of precipitation during the period can be successfully reproduced with a 10–15 days leadtime, although the intensity is weaker than observations. The model’s success lies in the timely prediction of large-scale atmospheric circulation anomalies, such as the atmospheric blocking over the mid-high latitudes and the southwesterly flow associated with the Bay of Bengal trough in the low latitudes, but the predicted cold air is too strong while the warm air too weak, leading to an underestimation of precipitation along the main rainbelt. Meanwhile, the capture of those circulation anomalies in the initial states and their persistence in subsequent model predictions has played a key role in the predictability of such an extreme event. Detailed analysis has shown that sea surface temperature and low-frequency signals, such as the Arctic Oscillation and the Madden–Julian Oscillation, may also be important during the process.

Atmospheric convective available potential energy (CAPE) is expected to increase under greenhouse gas–induced global warming, but a recent regional study also suggests enhanced convective inhibition (CIN) over land although its cause is not well understood. In this study, a global climate model is first evaluated by comparing its CAPE and CIN with reanalysis data, and then their future changes and the underlying causes are examined. The climate model reasonably captures the present-day CAPE and CIN patterns seen in the reanalysis, and projects increased CAPE almost everywhere and stronger CIN over most land under global warming. Over land, the cases or times with medium to strong CAPE or CIN would increase while cases with weak CAPE or CIN would decrease, leading to an overall strengthening in their mean values. These projected changes are confirmed by convection-permitting 4-km model simulations over the United States. The CAPE increase results mainly from increased low-level specific humidity, which leads to more latent heating and buoyancy for a lifted parcel above the level of free convection (LFC) and also a higher level of neutral buoyancy. The enhanced CIN over most land results mainly from reduced low-level relative humidity (RH), which leads to a higher lifting condensation level and a higher LFC and thus more negative buoyancy. Over tropical oceans, the near-surface RH increases slightly, leading to slight weakening of CIN. Over the subtropical eastern Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, the impact of reduced low-level atmospheric lapse rates overshadows the effect of increased specific humidity, leading to decreased CAPE.

The station observations and reanalysis dataset are utilized to identify the cold vertex over Northeast China (NECV) in early summer (ES) and midsummer (MS) respectively. In this study, we focus on the characteristics of NECV and their distinct influences on local precipitations in ES and MS. The underpinning mechanisms are further inspected in terms of thermodynamic and dynamic processes. Results suggest that in ES (MS) the NECV is mainly located over Northern China-Southeastern Russia (Mongolia) and significantly correlated to the precipitations over the eastern (mid-western) regions of Northeast China. In the cases of extreme precipitations, NECV displays northward shift and intensification in ES and MS respectively. Meanwhile, the upper-level wind anomalies suggest a northward displacement of polar front jet and a weakened subtropical jet in ES, and an enhanced polar front jet and a southward shift of subtropical jet in MS. The wind anomalies induced by meridional temperature gradients and the Rossby wave activities transported to Northeast China encourage the development of atmospheric circulation vorticity and then promote the variations of NECV. Furthermore, the vorticity and temperature advections are favorable to the enhancement of ascending motion under quasigeostrophic approximation, which is combined with the sufficient water vapor transported from oceanic regions, triggering the regional extreme precipitations. Intriguingly, the pathways of water vapor transport and disturbance energy propagation caused by the diverse external forcings are different in ES and MS, which sheds some fresh light on the insight into the subseasonal variations of NECV and the distinctive contributions to extreme precipitations.

Increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases will not only raise Earth’s temperature but may also change its variability and seasonal cycle. Here CMIP5 model data are analyzed to quantify these changes in surface air temperature (Tas) and investigate the underlying processes. The models capture well the mean Tas seasonal cycle and variability and their changes in reanalysis, which shows decreasing Tas seasonal amplitudes and variability over the Arctic and Southern Ocean from 1979 to 2017. Daily Tas variability and seasonal amplitude are projected to decrease in the twenty-first century at high latitudes (except for boreal summer when Tas variability increases) but increase at low latitudes. The day of the maximum or minimum Tas shows large delays over high-latitude oceans, while it changes little at low latitudes. These Tas changes at high latitudes are linked to the polar amplification of warming and sea ice loss, which cause larger warming in winter than summer due to extra heating from the ocean during the cold season. Reduced sea ice cover also decreases its ability to cause Tas variations, contributing to the decreased Tas variability at high latitudes. Over low–midlatitude oceans, larger increases in surface evaporation in winter than summer (due to strong winter winds, strengthened winter winds in the Southern Hemisphere, and increased winter surface humidity gradients over the Northern Hemisphere low latitudes), coupled with strong ocean mixing in winter, lead to smaller surface warming in winter than summer and thus increased seasonal amplitudes there. These changes result in narrower (wider) Tas distributions over the high (low) latitudes, which may have important implications for other related fields.

Monsoon precipitation is a dominant driver of floods and droughts over East Asia, which affect billions of people. The lack of air-sea coupling has been blamed for the poor East Asian monsoon precipitation simulations in atmosphere-only models because coupled models generally do better. Based on analysis of simulations from 18 pairs of atmosphere-only and coupled models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5, we show that the improved monsoon precipitation in coupled models is largely due to compensation from sea surface temperature (SST) biases that originate from atmosphere model biases. Such bias compensation is demonstrated using surface energy budgets and a process chain to improve both the climatological mean and interannual precipitation patterns in coupled models. Models with larger atmosphere model errors benefit more from coupling and models with smaller errors benefit less. Hence the key to simultaneously improving the simulations of East Asian monsoon precipitation and SST is a better atmosphere model.

It remains a challenge for climate models to correctly capture the relationship between precipitation and ENSO. This study examines the linkage between the simulated precipitation climatology and ENSO-related precipitation anomaly during boreal winter based on the multi-model ensemble from the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (AMIP5) and perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) with the Beijing Climate Center (BCC) atmospheric model. The AMIP5 models have large biases in simulating the tropical precipitation anomaly during El Nino, such as the shifts of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ). The inter-model differences show that the precipitation change in response to sea surface temperature (SST) change increases with enhanced precipitation climatology. The ENSO-related precipitation anomaly can also be related to the spatial distribution of the mean-state precipitation. The simulated ITCZ/SPCZ displacements are significantly correlated with the spatial precipitation-SST relationship in the mean state. Models with stronger mean-state precipitation-SST relationship also produce stronger SPCZ/ITCZ displacements. The mean-state tropical precipitation also has strong impacts on the ENSO-related precipitation anomalies over East Asia. In the BCC PPE, the connection between the mean-state precipitation and ENSO-related precipitation anomaly is overall consistent with that in AMIP5. Parameters associated with the low-cloud and deep convection processes are the most influential ones for the precipitation simulations in BCC. Compared with the version in AMIP5, the new BCC model can better simulate the precipitation climatology and the relationship between ENSO and precipitation over southern China. These results have important implications for model development and model-based climate predictions.

Cluster extreme event (CEE), which is characterized by large affected area and long duration of extreme weather, has been arousing the worldwide serious concerns due to its severe impact on society. The winter cluster extreme events of low temperature (LT_CEEs) in the northern hemisphere from 1979 to 2013 are identified with a simplified objective method based on ERA-Interim and JRA-25 daily minimum surface air temperature. The probability density function (PDF) distributions of most indices in the winter LT_CEEs derived from the two datasets are well consistent with each other, especially in the occurrence frequency, duration, and affected area. As expected, the downward trend of all indices in recent 35 years under global warming is congruously revealed from both reanalysis. Nevertheless, the various indices of the winter LT_CEEs after 1998 are generally stable accompanied with slight upward trend, which might be closely related to the speed slowdown of global warming but require further investigation. Similar analysis was carried out with the simulated results of BCC_CSM1.1 model under four scenarios of RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5. The occurrence frequency of the winter LT_CEEs under RCP2.6 remains stable after 2050, but significantly decreases under RCP4.5 and RCP6.0, and disappears under RCP8.5 scenario. Overall, the descent rate of the winter LT_CEEs accelerates with the emission rise.

In this study, the concurrent meridional shift of the East Asian polar-front jet (EAPJ) and the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) and the associated thermal conditions have been investigated. The concurrent meridional shift is dominantly characterized by an out-of-phase shift of the two jets, as an equatorward shift of the EAPJ and a poleward shift of the EASJ, and vice versa. This shift is linked with the dipole surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly over the Eurasian continent and a La Niña–like sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. Associated with the dipole SAT anomaly, the meridional temperature gradient (MTG) anomaly exhibits a tripole pattern from low to high latitudes over the Eurasian continent, as well as an enhanced maximum eddy growth rate and an anomalous divergence of Eliassen–Palm flux (E-P flux) over the regions between the EAPJ and EASJ. Additionally, the synoptic-scale transient eddy activities (STEA) significantly decrease over the high latitudes and enhance between the EAPJ and EASJ. All the anomalies would benefit the equatorward and poleward shift of the EAPJ and EASJ, respectively. The MTG, E-P flux and STEA anomalies are also indicated in that associated with the Niña-like SST anomaly. Particularly, the variations are evident in low latitudes. The pathway of the stationary Rossby wave activity flux anomalies shows an eastward Rossby wave packet propagation along the southern portion of the EAPJ is associated with the SAT anomaly and that along the northern portion of the EASJ is associated with the SST anomaly. The relative contributions of the two thermal conditions have emphasized the role of the dipole SAT anomaly, based on multilinear regression.

Recent concurrent shifts of the East Asian polar-front jet (EAPJ) and the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) in the boreal winter have raised concerns, since they could result in severe weather events over East Asia. However, the possible mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, the roles of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) are investigated by analyzing reanalysis data and model simulations. Results show that combinations of opposite phases of the IPO and AMO can result in significant shifts of the two jets during 1920–2014. This relationship is particularly evident during 1999–2014 and 1979–98 in the reanalysis data. A combination of a negative phase of the IPO (−IPO) and a positive phase of the AMO (+AMO) since the late 1990s has enhanced the meridional temperature gradient and the Eady growth rate and thus westerlies over the region between the two jets, but weakened them to the south and north of the region, thereby contributing to the equatorward and poleward shifts of the EAPJ and EASJ, respectively. Atmospheric model simulations are further used to investigate the relative contribution of −IPO and +AMO to the jet shifts. The model simulations show that the combination of −IPO and +AMO favors the recent jet changes more than the individual −IPO or +AMO. Under a concurrent −IPO and +AMO, the meridional eddy transport of zonal momentum and sensitive heat strengthens, and more mean available potential energy converts to the eddy available potential energy over the region between the two jets, which enhances westerly winds there.

We modify the Zhang‐McFarlane (ZM) deep convection scheme in the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 to couple it with a unified parameterization for boundary‐layer turbulence and shallow convection, that is, Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBB). By assuming a lognormal distribution of entrainment rate across the entire moist convective regimes, we link mass fluxes between shallow and deep convection, which are partitioned by the entrainment rate of the shallowest deep convective plume. Hence, a new deep convective closure is established which is coupled to the sub‐grid vertical motion variability in CLUBB. The convection feedback (or memory) effects are also considered to decrease the entrainment spectrum width and enhance the vertical velocity variability that further affect deep convection. Results show that the revised scheme improves the precipitation simulations in terms of the mean state and variability at various timescales, such as the alleviated double‐intertropical convergence zone and more realistic simulations of the seasonal variation of monsoon precipitation over East Asia, Madden‐Julian Oscillation, and precipitation diurnal phase propagations downstream of large terrains. The improvements are still seen in many aspects such as the mean‐state precipitation when turning off the convection feedback impacts in the revised scheme, emphasizing the benefits of using the modified mass‐flux closure. However, the convection feedbacks have considerable effects on the precipitation diurnal cycle simulations over regions with late‐afternoon precipitation peaks. Overall, the revised scheme provides a unified treatment for sub‐grid vertical motions across regimes of boundary‐layer turbulence, shallow convection, and deep convection, leading to better‐simulated precipitation at various timescales.

In order to improve the physical consistency between shallow and deep convection, we modify the deep convective closure in the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5) coupled with a third‐order turbulence closure parameterization (i.e., Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals [CLUBB]). The revised closure reserves a portion of the total convective available potential energy for shallow convection via utilizing the heating and moistening profiles from CLUBB to distribute moisture and energy between shallow and deep convection. Simulations at two resolutions (i.e., 2° and 0.5°, respectively) are conducted to investigate the impacts of convective closure on the simulated precipitation diurnal variations. Results from low‐resolution simulations show that the revised closure suppresses deep convection until the lower troposphere is sufficiently moistened by shallow convection, which improves the precipitation diurnal variation simulations compared with the default closure, with the precipitation diurnal peak over tropical lands delayed from 12LST to 19LST. The revised closure better simulates the diurnal variations for precipitation over the Asian monsoon region, such as the delayed precipitation onset, but still fails to well capture the nighttime peak for precipitation there. This deficiency is alleviated to some extent when applying the revised closure in high‐resolution simulations, but nighttime precipitation is still underestimated probably because key processes responsible for nighttime convection are missing. Overall, our results indicate that establishing the consistency between shallow and deep convection is critical for the precipitation diurnal cycle simulations.

The reforecast of 11 models in the sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction project has been analyzed to investigate the effects of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the prediction skill of winter 2-m air temperature (T2M) over China. Most of the S2S models have useful prediction skills (correlation skill ≥ 0.5) before pentads 3 and 4. ECMWF model can possess a good prediction skill for almost four pentads and perform the best among the 11 models. ECCC and ECMWF models have more reliable ensemble prediction and better ensemble strategies than the other models. All the models tend to have lower T2M prediction skill over the Tibetan Plateau than that over the other regions of China. Moreover, initial state and model resolution have important influences on S2S prediction skill. In most of the models at pentads 3 and 4, T2M prediction skill of forecast with MJO at initial time is significantly higher than that without over parts of China. However, the spatial distributions of the prediction skill differences due to MJO are not consistent among the 11 models. This indicates that there is an uncertainty of the effects of MJO on T2M prediction over China at pentads 3 and 4. Planetary-scale teleconnection pattern excited by MJO over the Northern Hemisphere is the possible reason for the effect of MJO on T2M prediction skill. Because most of the models can maintain this teleconnection pattern for 3–4 forecast pentads, MJO can affect the atmospheric circulation over China during this period, and improve the T2M prediction skill in the models. This finding suggests that the prediction of winter T2M over China initialized with MJO can be more skillful at pentads 3 and 4 than that without MJO in the initial conditions.

Convection and microphysics parameterization schemes (i.e. CPS and MPS) are two important components related to the precipitation and cloud simulations in climate models, and one parameterization's impacts on the results can be dependent on the treatments in the other one. This study investigates the individual and combined impacts of CPS and MPS on the precipitation and cloud simulations over Asia based on nine regional model experiments using combinations of three CPSs of the Kain–Fritsch (KF), Zhang–McFarlane (ZM), and Grell 3D ensemble (G3), and three MPSs of the WRF double-moment 5-class (WDM5), WRF double-moment 6-class (WDM6), and Morrison double-moment (MORR). We first evaluate the simulated precipitation and find the experiment configured with the ZM CPS and MORR MPS performs the best when considering both the precipitation mean magnitude and spatial pattern. The sensitivity analysis results show that enhanced convection due to changing the CPS can cause strengthened or weakened stratiform processes, depending on the height of convective detrainments relative to that of convective drying, which is different among CPSs. In general, the CPS impacts on precipitation and clouds are larger when associating with the MORR MPS than with the other two MPSs as the former simulates more clouds and exhibits larger sensitivity of stratiform-type drying to convective detrainments. The MPS impacts on the precipitation and cloud simulations are also highly related to the CPS's behavior in simulating ice detrainments. Compared to the sum of the individual effects of CPS and MPS, simultaneously changing the two parameterizations causes considerably larger impacts on the precipitation and cloud simulations, suggesting the strong nonlinear interaction between the CPS and MPS.

Interannual variability of the North Pacific storm track and the three-dimensional atmosphere circulation during winter are investigated using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during 1950–2015. Results show that year-to-year variations of the storm track exhibit two principal modes, i.e. the monopole intensity change and the meridional shift of the storm track, respectively. The intensity change mode is linked to weakening of the Siberian high, northward shift of the western Pacific jet stream and Aleutian Low, and well corresponding to the Western Pacific teleconnection. The meridional shift mode is related to intensification and south-eastward extension of western Pacific jet stream and Aleutian Low, and linked to the Pacific-North America teleconnection. The internal atmospheric dynamics responsible for the storm track variability is further investigated from the perspective of wave-flow energy conversion. For the intensity change mode, accompanied by the enhanced baroclinity over the entrance region of the storm track, more energy is converted from mean available potential energy to eddy available potential energy and then transferred to eddy kinetic energy, which is favorable for the overall enhancement of the storm track intensity. For the meridional shift mode, more energy is transformed from mean available potential energy to eddy available potential energy and further transferred to eddy kinetic energy over the southern (northern) areas of the storm track, contributing to the southward (northward) shift of the storm track. Additionally, the increased (decreased) conversion from mean-flow kinetic energy to eddy kinetic energy over the north-eastern Pacific region is also in favor of the southward (northward) shift of the storm track.

Global-mean surface temperature has experienced fast warming during 1985–98 but stabilized during 1999–2013, especially in boreal winter. Climate changes over East Asia between the two warming periods and the associated mechanisms have not been fully understood. Analyses of observation and reanalysis data show that winter precipitation has decreased (increased) over southern (northeastern) China from 1985–98 to 1999–2013. Winds at 300 hPa over East Asia strengthened during 1999–2013 around 30°–47.5°N but weakened to the north and south of it. This change pattern caused the East Asian polar front jet (EAPJ) and the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) to shift, respectively, equatorward and poleward during 1999–2013. Associated with these jet displacements, the Siberian high enhanced and the East Asian trough shifted westward. The enhanced Siberian high strengthened the East Asian winter monsoon and weakened southwesterly winds over the South China Sea, leading to precipitation decreases over southern China. The westward shift of the East Asian trough enhanced convergence and precipitation over northeastern China. A combination of a negative phase of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation and a positive phase of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation during 1999–2013 resulted in significant tropospheric warming over the low and high latitudes and cooling over the midlatitudes of East Asia. These changes enhanced the meridional temperature gradient and thus westerlies over the region between the two jets but weakened them to the south and north of it, thereby contributing to the wind change patterns and the jet displacements.

Closure assumption in convection parameterization is critical for reasonably modeling the precipitation diurnal variation in climate models. This study evaluates the precipitation diurnal cycles over East Asia during the summer of 2008 simulated with three convective available potential energy (CAPE) based closure assumptions, i.e. CAPE-relaxing (CR), quasi-equilibrium (QE), and free-troposphere QE (FTQE) and investigates the impacts of planetary boundary layer (PBL) mixing, advection, and radiation on the simulation by using the weather research and forecasting model. The sensitivity of precipitation diurnal cycle to PBL vertical resolution is also examined. Results show that the precipitation diurnal cycles simulated with different closures all exhibit large biases over land and the simulation with FTQE closure agrees best with observation. In the simulation with QE closure, the intensified PBL mixing after sunrise is responsible for the late-morning peak of convective precipitation, while in the simulation with FTQE closure, convective precipitation is mainly controlled by advection cooling. The relative contributions of different processes to precipitation formation are functions of rainfall intensity. In the simulation with CR closure, the dynamical equilibrium in the free troposphere still can be reached, implying the complex cause-effect relationship between atmospheric motion and convection. For simulations in which total CAPE is consumed for the closures, daytime precipitation decreases with increased PBL resolution because thinner model layer produces lower convection starting layer, leading to stronger downdraft cooling and CAPE consumption. The sensitivity of the diurnal peak time of precipitation to closure assumption can also be modulated by changes in PBL vertical resolution. The results of this study help us better understand the impacts of various processes on the precipitation diurnal cycle simulation.

In an attempt to resolve the controversy as to whether Arctic sea ice loss leads to more midlatitude extremes, a metric of finite-amplitude wave activity is adopted to quantify the midlatitude wave activity and its change during the period of the drastic Arctic sea ice decline in both ERA Interim reanalysis data and a set of Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project-type of model experiments. Neither the ensemble mean response to the trend in the SST nor that to the declining trend of Arctic sea ice can replicate the sizable midlatitude-wide increase in the total wave activity (Ae) observed in the reanalysis, leaving its explanation to the atmospheric internal variability. On the other hand, both the diagnostics of the flux of the local anticyclonic wave activity (LAWA) and atmospheric general circulation model experiments lend evidence to a possible linkage between the sea ice loss near the Barents and Kara Seas and the increasing trend of LAWA over the northern part of the central Eurasia and the associated impacts on the frequency of temperature extremes.

The uncertainty of global summer precipitation simulated by the 23 CMIP5 CGCMs and the possible impacts of model resolutions are investigated in this study. Large uncertainties exist over the tropical and subtropical regions, which can be mainly attributed to convective precipitation simulation. High-resolution models (HRMs) and low-resolution models (LRMs) are further investigated to demonstrate their different contributions to the uncertainties of the ensemble mean. It shows that the high-resolution model ensemble means (HMME) and low-resolution model ensemble mean (LMME) mitigate the biases between the MME and observation over most continents and oceans, respectively. The HMME simulates more precipitation than the LMME over most oceans, but less precipitation over some continents. The dominant precipitation category in the HRMs (LRMs) is the heavy precipitation (moderate precipitation) over the tropic regions. The combinations of convective and stratiform precipitation are also quite different: the HMME has much higher ratio of stratiform precipitation while the LMME has more convective precipitation. Finally, differences in precipitation between the HMME and LMME can be traced to their differences in the SST simulations via the local and remote air-sea interaction.

In this study, the concurrent variation relationships between the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) and polar-front jet (PFJ) over the East Asian land mass in the winter season on different timescales are identified and the impacts of the jet concurrent variation patterns on the atmospheric circulation in mid–high latitude regions and climate anomalies in China are examined, using NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data and observational data. The major variability modes of the winter upper-level wind field on interannual timescales are characterized by the meridional shift of the PFJ and out-of-phase variation in the intensity of the subtropical jet and PFJ. On subseasonal and synoptic timescales, the concurrent variation relationships can be categorized into four configuration patterns: a strong (weak) subtropical jet accompanied by a weak (strong) PFJ, or a strong (weak) subtropical jet with a strong (weak) PFJ. The out-ofphase variation [i.e., a stronger (weaker) EASJ and weaker (stronger) PFJ] is found to be more common than the inphase variation [i.e., a stronger (weaker) EASJ and stronger (weaker) PFJ]. These concurrent variation relationships represent the integral structure and variation features of the atmospheric general circulation over East Asia, and have significant impacts on the weather and climate. The strong subtropical jet/weak PFJ (weak subtropical jet/strong PFJ) pattern leads to anomalous negative (positive) geopotential height in midlatitude regions and favors cold (warm) conditions, and positive (negative) rainfall anomalies in southern China. For both strong jet configurations, the geopotential height anomaly in the mid–high latitudes shows a northwest–southeast tilted dipole pattern, resulting in northern warm–southern cold temperature anomalies, and positive rainfall anomalies in southern China. For both weak jet situations, positive geopotential height anomalies dominate the East Asian area, and warm conditions occur over most areas in China, corresponding to less negative rainfall anomalies in southern China. The complicated rainfall and temperature anomaly patterns in China can be explained by the concurrent variation relationships between the two jets. A close relationship may exist between the synoptic-scale transient eddy activity (STEA) and the intensity of jet streams, especially for the PFJ. Significantly reduced (strengthened) STEA over the polar-front area is intimately associated with a decreased (increased) intensity of the PFJ.

The main advancements of the Beijing Climate Center (BCC) climate system model from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) to phase 6 (CMIP6) are presented, in terms of physical parameterizations and model performance. BCC-CSM1.1 and BCC-CSM1.1m are the two models involved in CMIP5, whereas BCC-CSM2-MR, BCC-CSM2-HR, and BCC-ESM1.0 are the three models configured for CMIP6. Historical simulations from 1851 to 2014 from BCC-CSM2-MR (CMIP6) and from 1851 to 2005 from BCC-CSM1.1m (CMIP5) are used for models assessment. The evaluation matrices include the following: (a) the energy budget at top-of-atmosphere; (b) surface air temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric circulation for the global and East Asia regions; (c) the sea surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific; (d) sea-ice extent and thickness and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC); and (e) climate variations at different timescales, such as the global warming trend in the 20th century, the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the diurnal cycle of precipitation. Compared with BCC-CSM1.1m, BCC-CSM2-MR shows significant improvements in many aspects including the tropospheric air temperature and circulation at global and regional scales in East Asia and climate variability at different timescales, such as the QBO, the MJO, the diurnal cycle of precipitation, interannual variations of SST in the equatorial Pacific, and the long-term trend of surface air temperature.
