Two novel species within the family Dictyosporiaceae are described and illustrated from terrestrial habitats on dead culms of bamboo and an unidentified plant, respectively. Through morphological comparisons and the multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS, SSU, and tef1-α sequence dataset, two species, Gregarithecium bambusicola, Pseudocoleophoma paraphysoidea are identified. Phylogenetically, both species clustered into a monophyletic clade with strong bootstrap support. Gregarithecium bambusicola sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species within the genus based on its almost straight ascospores. Pseudocoleophoma paraphysoidea sp. nov. differs from other species in its conidiogenous cells intermixed with paraphyses, longer conidiogenous cells and larger conidia. The identification of this lineage contributes to our understanding of the classification of Dictyosporiaceae.

Hot-dry-windy events (HDWEs), characterized by concurrent high temperature, low humidity, and strong wind speeds, are associated with reduced crop yields, accelerated spread of wildfire, increased human health risks, and dust storms across various regions. A comprehensive understanding of global HDWE severity is crucial for mitigating these detrimental consequences. However, current assessments of HDWE show notable regional constraints due to the lack of a universal definition for its severity. In the field of remote sensing, it is not feasible to obtain high spatial resolution multispectral (HRMS) images from a single satellite sensor. The existing methods use pansharpening techniques to obtain HRMS images by fusing panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) images. However, due to the scale difference between PAN and MS images, most pansharpening methods often use explicit sampling methods to integrate features at different scales. These explicit-based sampling techniques represent pixels as discrete points through predefined functions, rendering it challenging to fit the distribution among diverse modal data, this results in the loss of image texture details during the fusion process. Implicit neural networks can enhance the generative capability of images by incorporating pixel coordinate information, which is crucial for the fusion of remote sensing images with different spatial resolutions. Inspired by implicit neural representation, we propose a progressive implicit neural feature fusion network (PINFNet) for remote sensing images. A progressive implicit neural feature fusion is proposed; it establishes a coordinate modal relationship between the spatial and spectral information through the guidance of the high spatial features in PAN images. This enables the proposed PINFNet to progressively learn and integrate spatial and spectral information at different scales. Our method, as opposed to discrete sampling techniques, is capable of establishing a continuous representation between diverse modal data, which in turn preserves more texture detail information. Extensive experiments have shown that this approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods while maintaining high efficiency.

Abstract The effects of Easydo Activator (EA), a new sonic irrigation system, on sealer penetration at the root apex were compared to needle irrigation (NI) and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) in this study. Forty-two single-rooted teeth were prepared and randomly divided into three groups (n = 14): group 1: NI; group 2: PUI; and group 3: EA. A solution of 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was used for irrigation. Nine teeth in each group were filled with AH Plus sealer mixed with CY5 fluorescent dye and a single gutta-percha cone. The sealer penetration area, maximum penetration depth and percentage of sealer penetration at 5 mm and 1 mm from the apex were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The remaining 5 teeth in each group were subjected to test smear layer scores by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The CLSM evaluation showed that increases in the area, depth and percentage of sealer penetration were detected at 1 and 5 mm from the root apex in the PUI group compared with the NI group, and greater increases were observed in the EA group (P

Iron is an impurity widely occurred in sphalerite, and its effect on sphalerite flotation is complex. In this work, the effects of iron content and spin state on electronic properties and floatability of iron-bearing sphalerite are comprehensively studied using density functional theory Hubbard U (DFT+U) calculations combined with coordination chemistry flotation. The band gap of ideal sphalerite is 3.723 eV, and thus electron transition is difficult to occur, resulting in poor floatability. The results suggest the band gap of sphalerite decreases with increasing iron content. For low iron content, the decreased band gap facilitates electron transition; at this case, Fe2+ in a high-spin state possesses one π electron pair, which can form a weak π-backbonding with xanthate, causing increasing floatability. However, for medium and high iron-bearing sphalerite, with the further decrease of band gap, Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+ due to electrochemical interaction, and hence π-backbonding is eliminated, leading to lower floatability of iron-bearing sphalerite, which is consistent with the flotation experimental results. This work could give a deeper understanding of how sphalerite flotation behaviors are affected by iron content.

Assessing vegetation changes in alpine arid and fragile ecosystems is imperative for informed ecological restoration initiatives and adaptive ecosystem management. Previous studies primarily employed the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to reveal vegetation dynamics, ignoring the spatial heterogeneity alterations caused by bare soil. In this study, we used a comprehensive analysis of NDVI and its spatial heterogeneity to examine the vegetation changes across the Three-River Headwaters Region (TRHR) over the past two decades. A random forest model was used to elucidate the underlying causes of these changes. We found that between 2000 and 2022, 9.4% of the regions exhibited significant changes in both NDVI and its spatial heterogeneity. These regions were categorized into six distinct types of vegetation change: improving conditions (62.1%), regrowing conditions (11.0%), slight degradation (16.2%), medium degradation (8.4%), severe degradation (2.0%), and desertification (0.3%). In comparison with steppe regions, meadows showed a greater proportion of improved conditions and medium degradation, whereas steppes had more instances of regrowth and slight degradation. Climate variables are the dominant factors that caused vegetation changes, with contributions to NDVI and spatial heterogeneity reaching 68.9% and 73.2%, respectively. Temperature is the primary driver of vegetation dynamics across the different types of change, with a more pronounced impact in meadows. In severely degraded steppe and meadow regions, grazing intensity emerged as the predominant driver of NDVI change, with an importance value exceeding 0.50. Notably, as degradation progressed from slight to severe, the significance of this factor correspondingly increased. Our findings can provide effective information for guiding the implementation of ecological restoration projects and the sustainable management of alpine arid ecosystems.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of microencapsulated essential oils (MEO) on the laying performance, egg quality, immunity, intestinal morphology, and oxidative status of laying hens. A total of 640 Hy-line Brown laying hens, 41 wk of age, were randomly divided into 4 groups, each with 8 replicates containing 20 birds per replicate. The dietary conditions tested included a basal diet (Control) or the basal diet supplemented with various levels of MEO at 100 mg/kg (MEO100), 300 mg/kg (MEO300), and 500 mg/kg (MEO500). The three treatment groups were intermittently fed MEO, following an alternating schedule of 1 wk on and 1 wk off for a total of 56 d. Results showed that feeding MEO at levels of 300 and 500 mg/kg improved both egg production and feed conversion ratios compared to the control group. Hens consumed MEO-supplemented diets exhibited a significant decrease in the breaking egg ratio (P < 0.05) compared to those fed the control diet. Shell thickness and Haugh unit values significantly increased in the groups receiving 300 and 500 mg/kg of MEO (P < 0.05). Both the MEO300 and MEO500 treatments led to improvements in immunoglobulin (IgA, IgM, and IgG) and cytokine (IL-2 and IFN-γ) levels in serum. Hens in the MEO300 and MEO500 groups exhibited higher values for parameters related to intestinal morphometry compared to the control group. Furthermore, supplementation with 300 and 500 mg/kg of MEO enhanced the antioxidant capacity of plasma, as evidenced by increased activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and catalase (CAT) (P < 0.05). In summary, the intermittent feeding of MEO improved egg production, enhanced antioxidative processes, immune functions, and intestinal morphology, leading to an amelioration in the egg quality of laying hens. Our data demonstrate that supplementation of 300 mg/kg of MEO in feed can significantly improve animal health and egg quality. Implementation of these feeding practices could have a positive economic impact on poultry and egg industry.

Edible mushroom sexual spores have been gaining more interest due to their bioactive components and functions. Spore discharge (SD) is an important factor affecting the quality of edible mushrooms.In this review, the bioactive nutrients of sexual spores of edible mushrooms were summarized, the SD mechanism was described, and the relationship between postharvest SD and the quality of edible mushrooms was analyzed.Spores contain various bioactive nutrients that are beneficial to the human body. Mature mushrooms can actively discharge spores in a process affected by light, relative humidity, and temperature. During storage, the physiological metabolism of spore-bearing gill tissue is vigorous, promoting the release of postharvest spores and changing the nutritional value of fruiting bodies. The flavor of the fruiting bodies also varied significantly during SD. Edible mushroom sexual spores have the potential to become new raw materials for functional food and medical resources. Research on the effect of the mechanism of SD on the quality of edible mushrooms and the development of SD regulation technology may be a new trend in the quality control of edible mushrooms, which will promote the development of the edible mushroom industry.

Composting emerges as an effective strategy to eliminate antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in animal manure. In this study, chicken manure with the addition of wheat straw and sawdust was used as composting raw materials, and different concentrations of norfloxacin were added to investigate its effects on physicochemical properties, bacterial community, and ARGs during the composting process. Results show that the presence of norfloxacin has obvious effects on the composting physicochemical properties and germination index (GI). A high concentration of norfloxacin influences the succession direction of the bacterial community and promotes the transfers of gyrA, gyrB, parC, qepA, and qnrB. The composting physicochemical properties alter bacterial communities and further influence the fate of ARGs. These results suggest that meticulous management of antibiotic usage and compost conditions are vital strategies for mitigating the influx of antibiotics and ARGs into the environment, both at the source and on the path.

【Objective】 This study is to comprehensively analyze the efficiency of farmland water infrastructure in Henan province and provide guidelines for sustainable utilization of water resources in agriculture. 【Method】 Using data measured from 2013 to 2020 from 15 cities in the province, the efficiency of farmland water infrastructure was evaluated using the DEA model and the Malmquist index. Redundancy analysis was conducted to identify the areas of improvement for non-DEA effective regions in 2020. The evaluation considered both static and dynamic aspect to assess the efficiency of the farmland water infrastructure. 【Result】 In 2020, six cities, including Kaifeng, Hebi, and Jiaozuo, achieved DEA efficiency, while the remaining cities were deemed inefficient. The non-DEA effective regions exhibited varying degrees of input redundancy and output deficiencies. For example, Zhengzhou had high input redundancy in reservoirs and primary industry employment; Xinxiang had high input redundancy in rural electricity consumption; Zhengzhou and Xuchang had output deficiencies in the total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery; Luoyang had output deficiencies in the irrigated area. The total factor productivity of the farmland water infrastructure in the province exhibited an average growth at a rate of 10.0% from 2013 to 2020, driven primarily by technological progress. 【Conclusion】 To promote sustainable development, resource allocation should be tailored to local conditions, and efforts should be made to facilitate the non-agricultural transfer of rural labor, thereby reducing non-effective investment in farmland water conservation. Leveling regional development of farmland water infrastructure can benefit from policy support and innovative funding. Integrating science and technology innovation can facilitate modernization of the farmland water infrastructure.

Abstract Objective Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a multidimensional concept that is commonly used to examine the impact of oral health status on quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the optimal factor model of the Chinese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire in clinical populations, measurement invariance across clinical status and gender cohorts. This would ensure equal validity of the Chinese version of OHIP-14 in different populations and further support public oral investigations. Methods The Chinese version of OHIP-14 was used to investigate 490 dental patients and 919 college students. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), item analysis and reliability, measurement invariance, and the t-test were used for data analyses. Results We found that the 7-factor structure had the best-fit index in the sample (CFI = 0.970, TLI = 0.952; SRMR = 0.029, RMSEA = 0.052(0.040,0.063)). The reliability of the scales was satisfactory (Cronbach’s α = 0.942). The error variance invariance fitted the data adequately in measurement invariance, indicating that measurement invariance is acceptable both across the clinical and non-clinical populations (∆CFI=-0.017, ∆RMSEA = 0.010) and across genders in the clinical population (∆CFI = 0.000, ∆RMSEA=-0.003). Cellular senescence is a state of irreversible cellular growth arrest that occurs in response to various stresses. In addition to exiting the cell cycle, senescent cells undergo many phenotypic alterations, including metabolic reprogramming, chromatin rearrangement, and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) development. Furthermore, senescent cells can affect most physiological and pathological processes, such as physiological development; tissue homeostasis; tumour regression; and age-associated disease progression, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and hypertension. Although corresponding anti-senescence therapies are actively being explored for the treatment of age-associated diseases, the specific regulatory mechanisms of senescence remain unclear. N6-methyladenosine (m6A), a chemical modification commonly distributed in eukaryotic RNA, plays an important role in biological processes such as translation, shearing, and RNA transcription. Numerous studies have shown that m6A plays an important regulatory role in cellular senescence and aging-related disease. In this review, we systematically summarize the role of m6A modifications in cellular senescence with regard to oxidative stress, DNA damage, telomere alterations, and SASP development. Additionally, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease regulation via m6A-mediated cellular senescence is discussed. We further discuss the challenges and prospects of m6A in cellular senescence and age-associated diseases with the aim of providing rational strategies for the treatment of these age-associated diseases.

Abstract Background Orofacial pain (OFP) is a highly prevalent disorder in mainland China that predisposes to an associated physical and psychological disability. There is lack of a good properties mainland Chinese version of instrument to examine OFP. This study aims to cross-cultural adaptation and evaluate psychometrics properties of the Manchester Orofacial Pain Disability Scale (MOPDS) in mainland Chinese Mandarin context. Methods Translation and cross-cultural adaption of the mainland Chinese version MOPDS were conducted following accepted guidelines of self-report measures. Chinese college students (N = 1039) completed the mainland Chinese version of the MOPDS for item analysis, reliability and validity tests, and measurement invariance analysis, and after a one-month interval, around 10% of the sample (n = 110) were invited to retest. To conduct the CFA and measurement invariance analysis, Mplus 8.4 was used. IBM SPSS Statistics 26 software were used for all additional studies. Results We found that the mainland Chinese version of MOPDS contains 25 items, divided into two categories: physical disability and psychological disability. The scale demonstrated excellent internal reliability, test-retest reliability, and validity. The measurement invariance results proved that the scale could be applied to people of different gender, age, and health consultation status. Conclusions The results demonstrated the mainland Chinese version of MOPDS has good psychometric properties and can be used to measure the level of physical and psychological disability of Chinese OFP peoples.

The fungal taxa belonging to the Clavicipitaceae (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) are widely distributed and include diverse saprophytic, symbiotic and pathogenic species that are associated with soils, insects, plants, fungi and invertebrates. In this study, we identified two new fungal taxa belonging to the family Clavicipitaceae that were isolated from soils collected in China. Morphological characterisation and phylogenetic analyses showed that the two species belong to Pochonia (Pochonia sinensis sp. nov.) and a new genus for which we propose Paraneoaraneomyces gen. nov. in Clavicipitaceae.

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an essential indicator of organic pollution that represents the amount of bulk carbon in water. COD is strongly correlated with nutrient cycles and other pollutants in the environment, but it has a limited ability to quantify the amount of organic carbon (OC), of which a large proportion is made up of refractory dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) and is a potential carbon sink. Moreover, the biodegradability of OC in terms of its fate and destination should be explored, as well as how this is reflected by COD. Methods based on particle size, spectroscopy, and isotopic tracing are expected to help with deciphering the bioavailability of COD-responsive OC and explore the processes of biogeochemical cycles. As the pressure on the environment from anthropogenic inputs increases, understanding the bioavailability of OC associated with COD will help with developing more precise scientific indicators for environmental monitoring and identifying how new tools will increase knowledge of the carbon cycle. In this review, we discuss the application, scope, means, and advances of COD measurement. Based on data in the literature, we estimate the global RDOC stock and assess the impact of anthropogenic RDOC on the carbon cycle in offshore bays. This review presents new insights into the behavior of OC in aquatic environments and a potential pathway for ocean negative carbon emissions by expanding the role of RDOC as a carbon sink to offset the effect of anthropogenic carbon emissions.

Abstract Background Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infectious disease in China. This study aimed to investigate the incidence trends of brucellosis in China, construct an optimal prediction model, and analyze the driving role of climatic factors for human brucellosis. Methods Using brucellosis incidence, and the socioeconomic and climatic data for 2014–2020 in China, we performed spatiotemporal analyses and calculated correlations with brucellosis incidence in China, developed and compared a series of regression and Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average X (SARIMAX) models for brucellosis prediction based on socioeconomic and climatic data, and analyzed the relationship between extreme weather conditions and brucellosis incidence using copula models. Results In total, 327,456 brucellosis cases were reported in China in 2014–2020 (monthly average of 3898 cases). The incidence of brucellosis was distinctly seasonal, with a high incidence in spring and summer and an average annual peak in May. The incidence rate was highest in the northern regions’ arid and continental climatic zones (1.88 and 0.47 per million people, respectively) and lowest in the tropics (0.003 per million people). The incidence of brucellosis showed opposite trends of decrease and increase in northern and southern China, respectively, with an overall severe epidemic in northern China. Most regression models using socioeconomic and climatic data cannot predict brucellosis incidence. The SARIMAX model was suitable for brucellosis prediction. There were significant negative correlations between the proportion of extreme weather values for both high sunshine and high humidity and the incidence of brucellosis as follows: high sunshine, $$r$$ r = −0.59 and −0.69 in arid and temperate zones; high humidity, $$r$$ r = −0.62, −0.64, and −0.65 in arid, temperate, and tropical zones. Conclusions Significant seasonal and climatic zone differences were observed for brucellosis incidence in China. Sunlight, humidity, and wind speed significantly influenced brucellosis. The SARIMAX model performed better for brucellosis prediction than did the regression model. Notably, high sunshine and humidity values in extreme weather conditions negatively affect brucellosis. Brucellosis should be managed according to the “One Health” concept.

Abstract Background Jaw-bone defects caused by various diseases lead to aesthetic and functional complications, which can seriously affect the life quality of patients. Current treatments cannot fully meet the needs of reconstruction of jaw-bone defects. Thus, the research and application of bone tissue engineering are a “hot topic.” As seed cells for engineering of jaw-bone tissue, oral cavity-derived stem cells have been explored and used widely. Models of jaw-bone defect are excellent tools for the study of bone defect repair in vivo. Different types of bone defect repair require different stem cells and bone defect models. This review aimed to better understand the research status of oral and maxillofacial bone regeneration. Main text Data were gathered from PubMed searches and references from relevant studies using the search phrases “bone” AND (“PDLSC” OR “DPSC” OR “SCAP” OR “GMSC” OR “SHED” OR “DFSC” OR “ABMSC” OR “TGPC”); (“jaw” OR “alveolar”) AND “bone defect.” We screened studies that focus on “bone formation of oral cavity-derived stem cells” and “jaw bone defect models,” and reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of oral cavity-derived stem cells and preclinical model of jaw-bone defect models. Conclusion The type of cell and animal model should be selected according to the specific research purpose and disease type. This review can provide a foundation for the selection of oral cavity-derived stem cells and defect models in tissue engineering of the jaw bone.

As one of the most appealing edible mushrooms, the quality of Flammulina velutipes can be affected by the cultivation substrate, which has an impact on the mushroom umami taste and nutrients. In our study, the effect of mushroom root fermentation broth (MRFB) based substrate on umami taste and nutrients of F. velutipes were evaluated; four proportions of MRFB were conducted (CK 0%, E1 6.7%, E2 13.4%, E3 20.1%). Results indicated that MRFB was an effective nutrient supplement for mushroom cultivation substrate. E2 and E3 showed higher crude fiber, crude fat, and soluble protein. Compared to CK, the content of monosodium glutamate-like (MSG-like) amino acids, essential amino acids, total amino acids, and total 5′-nucleotides in E2 and E3 were higher. The equivalent umami concentration (EUC) values in E1, E2 and E3 were 1.70, 2.43 and 1.56 times that of CK, respectively. Higher umami, saltness and sweetness taste values were found in E2. Thereby, it signified that better umami and richer nutrients were achieved by using substrate with proper volume of MRFB, especially, E2 with 13.4% of MRFB. Overall, better mushroom quality could be derived from the application of MRFB in cultivation. MRFB was a favorable nutrient supplement for F. velutipes cultivation substrate.

The separation and recovery of Fe(III) in heavy metal mixtures is a great challenge due to its strong ion exchange property. In this study, we developed a novel cinnamon-like blended fiber (PAN/PEG) using electrostatic spinning and dissolution post-treatment, which exhibited highly selective separation properties and satisfactory adsorption capacity for Fe(III). Owing to the preferential coordination of Fe(III) with both cyanide and hydroxyl groups, PAN/PEG possessed such excellent adsorption capacity as 1.12 mmol/g. Notably, the infinite selective separation coefficient between Fe(III) and other heavy metal ions (HMIs) achieved even from the octa-mixed metal systems. Furthermore, PAN/PEG demonstrated good anti-interference ability against coexisting inorganic salts. In addition, PAN/PEG was highly effective in removing lower concentration Fe(III) from complex PTA wastewater with super-high selectivity, which enabled the subsequent purification of Co(II) and Mn(II). Overall, PAN/PEG could be prepared and recovered facilely, and had great potential in the exclusive separation of Fe(III).

Background: Regarding past epidemiological studies, there has been disagreement over whether type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is one of the risk factors for dental caries. The purpose of this study was to determine the causative links between genetic susceptibility to T1DM, glycemic traits, and the risk of dental caries using Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches.Methods: Summary-level data were collected on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of T1DM, fasting glucose (FG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting insulin (FI), and dental caries. MR was performed using the inverse-variance weighting (IVW) method, and sensitivity analyses were conducted using the MR-Egger method, weighted median, weighted mode, replication cohort, and multivariable MR conditioning on potential mediators.Results: The risk of dental caries increased as a result of genetic susceptibility to T1DM [odds ratio (OR) = 1.044; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.015–1.074; p = 0.003], with consistent findings in the replication cohort. The relationship between T1DM and dental caries was stable when adjusted for BMI, smoking, alcohol intake, and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in multivariable MR. However, no significant correlations between the risk of dental caries and FG, HbA1c, or FI were found.Conclusion: These results indicate that T1DM has causal involvement in the genesis of dental caries. Therefore, periodic reinforcement of oral hygiene instructions must be added to the management and early multidisciplinary intervention of T1DM patients, especially among adolescents and teenagers, who are more susceptible to T1DM.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused a global pandemic, with potential severity. We aimed to investigate whether genetically predicted gut microbiome is associated with susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 risk. MethodsMendelian randomization (MR) analysis of two sets with different significance thresholds was carried out to infer the causal relationship between the gut microbiome and COVID-19. SNPs associated with the composition of the gut microbiome (n = 5,717,754) and with COVID-19 susceptibility (n = 14,328,058), COVID-19 severity (n = 11,707,239), and COVID-19 hospitalization (n = 12,018,444) from publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The random-effect inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used to determine causality. Three more MR techniques—MR Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode—and a thorough sensitivity analysis were also used to confirm the findings.ResultsIVW showed that 18 known microbial taxa were causally associated with COVID-19. Among them, six microbial taxa were causally associated with COVID-19 susceptibility; seven microbial taxa were causally associated with COVID-19 severity ; five microbial taxa were causally associated with COVID-19 hospitalization. Sensitivity analyses showed no evidence of pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Then, the predicted 37 species of the gut microbiome deserve further study.ConclusionThis study found that some microbial taxa were protective factors or risky factors for COVID-19, which may provide helpful biomarkers for asymptomatic diagnosis and potential therapeutic targets for COVID-19.

Measurements of evaporation from pans have traditionally been used to represent the evaporative demand of the atmosphere when estimating the crop water requirements. In China, Pan evaporation (Epan) has been observed routinely at meteorological stations since the 1950 s with D20 pans, but since 2002, the pans have been replaced by E-601B. To explore the effective reconstruction of missing daily D20 Epan over China from 1951 to 2020, this study employed three types of Epan models: the widely used physical model PenPan, two popular machine learning (ML) models (multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) and random forest (RF)), and multiple linear regression (MLR). Daily Epan data were predicted based on the daily wind speed (U), atmospheric pressure (AP), relative humidity (Rh), air temperature (Ta), and sunshine hours (n) of 2410 meteorological stations. The results showed that the MARS and RF predictions were superior to those of PenPan, and the results of MLR were the worst. The average determination coefficient for RF, MARS, PenPan, and MLR values were 0.95, 0.91, 0.88, and 0.86, respectively, and the average root-mean-square difference were 0.62, 0.91, 1.17, and 1.15 mm day−1, respectively. Thus, the missing daily Epan were predicted using RF and the reconstructed Epan had the same probability density function as the observed Epan. The annual Epan first showed a downward trend (at a rate of 6.17 mm yr−1) from 1961 to 1993 and then a reverse upward trend (at a rate of 1.84 mm yr−1) from 1994 to 2020. Epan predictions by PenPan are limited by regional characteristics, making it difficult to transfer between regions. However, ML methods are less affected by regional characteristics and can be used across regions. Furthermore, ML methods can effectively reconstruct missing Epan providing support for verification of PenPan, which is beneficial for the study of driving factors of Epan.

Abstract Background Most existing studies comparing the efficiency of sonic irrigation (SI) and conventional needle irrigation (CNI) in increasing the penetration of sealers into dentine tubules are controversial; and this study aimed to determine whether the use of SI can lead to greater sealing ability than CNI, during the root canal treatment. Methods The EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were used to find confocal laser scanning microscopy studies evaluating percentage and maximum depth of sealer penetration following the use of SI or CNI in mature permanent teeth until October 2022. The critical estimative checklist of randomized controlled trials of the standardized Joanna Briggs Institute was adopted to independently score the quality of each study. The random-effect model for meta-analysis was used to analyse for each canal segment (apical, middle, coronal). The results are shown in the forest plots as weighted mean differences (WMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results Ninety-seven articles were included in the preliminary screening, and nine of them were included in this study. Eight studies were included in the meta-analysis.The meta-analysis exhibited great increases in the coronal (WMD: 8.09, 95% CI 2.78–13.40/WMD: 165.32, 95% CI 128.85–201.80), and middle segments (WMD: 8.81, 95% CI 5.76–11.87/WMD: 132.98, 95% CI 68.71–197.25) for the percentage and maximum depth of sealer penetration, respectively. The percentage of sealer penetration in the apical thirds region was nonsignificant (WMD: 4.73, 95% CI − 2.34–11.80). However, the maximum depth of sealer penetration in the apical thirds region was significant (WMD: 121.46, 95% CI 86.55–156.38). Chi-squared analysis revealed heterogeneity scores of 0.0–70.0% and 44.0–90.0% for the percentage and maximum depth of sealer penetration, respectively. Discussion This review verified that SI significantly improves tubular dentin sealer penetration in most areas of the root canal; thus, SI may lead to better filling efficiency and anti-reinfection effects than CNI during and after the root canal therapy. Nevertheless, a large heterogeneity in the current data comparing the irrigation efficiency of SI versus CNI in the apical third of the root canal was found, implying the necessity to standardize root canal irrigation procedures and obtain more accurate results in this area. Female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2020. A large number of studies have proved that tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are lethal to tumors and play an important role in identifying tumor antigens. Therefore, the application of TILs in clinical immunotherapy and prognosis assessment of breast cancer has attracted wide attention. In this review, the basic research progress and clinical application of TILs in different molecular types of breast cancer are reviewed, and the value of TILs in judging breast cancer prognosis and predicting the therapeutic effect of clinical immunotherapy is evaluated.

Abstract Background The Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) is a multi-dimensional concept commonly used to examine the impact of health status on quality of life, and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire is a good self-assessment tool. This study was designed to investigate the factor structure of the OHIP-14 scale Chinese version, measurement invariance and latent mean differences across genders among college students. Methods The online survey was completed by 919 college students. This study used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to check the structural models of the OHIP-14 scale, The correlation of each item with the scale total score could test homogeneity, and Cronbach’s alpha (Cronbach’s α) could evaluate internal consistency. Multi-group CFA was used to explore whether the Chinese version of the OHIP-14 scale was used in male and female populations for measurement consistency. T-test compared scores between men and women. Regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship between age, gender, education, subject, and the score on the OHIP-14 scale. Results We found that the 7-factor structure had the best fit index in the sample. According to Cronbach’s α, the overall score of OHIP was 0.958, and Cronbach’s α for 7 factors was: functional limitation was 0.800, physical pain was 0.854, psychological discomfort was 0.902, physical disability was 0.850, psychological disability was 0.768, social disability was 0.862, social handicap was 0.819 and the test–retest reliability interval was 0.723. Introduction: The burden of cognitive impairment in heart failure (HF) patients is significant and leads to longer hospital stay, higher readmission rates, and increased mortality. This review seeks to synthesize the available studies to determine the prevalence and incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia in HF patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, PsychoINFO, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched from their inception through to May 3, 2021. Study and population characteristics, total patients with HF, prevalence of cognitive impairment and dementia in HF patients, and cognitive assessment tool were abstracted by two reviewers. Results: In HF patients, the overall prevalence for cognitive impairment and dementia was 41.42% (CI) and 19.79% (dementia), respectively. We performed a meta-regression analysis, which demonstrated that the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia increased with age. Discussion: Further research should investigate whether HF accelerates the rate of cognitive decline and the progression of dementia.

Background: There are considerable socioeconomic costs associated with bone defects, making regenerative medicine an increasingly attractive option for treating them. Chitosan is a natural biopolymer; it is used in approaches for sustained slow release and osteogenesis, and metformin has osteoinductivity. Our study aimed to synthesize chitosan and human serum albumin (HSA) with a metformin nanoformulation to evaluate the therapeutic effects of this nanoformulation on bone defects in vitro.Methods: A pluripotent differentiation assay was performed in vitro on mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Cell Counting Kit-8 was used to detect whether metformin was toxic to BMSCs. The osteogenesis-related gene expression of osteocalcin (OCN) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) from BMSCs was tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). HSA, metformin hydrochloride, and chitosan mixtures were magnetically stirred to finish the assembly of metformin/HSA/chitosan nanoparticles (MHC NPs). The MHC NPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). To test the expression of OCN and OPG, western blot were used. MHC NPs were evaluated in vitro for their osteoinductivity using alkaline phosphatase (ALP).Results: BMSCs successfully differentiated into osteogenic and adipogenic lineages in vitro. According to real-time PCR, a 50 µM concentration of metformin promoted osteogenesis in BMSCs most effectively by upregulating the osteogenic markers OCN and OPG. The microstructure of MHC NPs was spherical with an average nanosize of 20 ± 4.7 nm and zeta potential of −8.3 mV. A blueshift and redshift were observed in MHC NPs following exposure to wavelengths of 1,600–1,900 and 2,000–3,700 nm, respectively. The encapsulation (%) of metformin was more than 90%. The simulation study showed that MHC NPs have good stability and it could release metformin slowly in vitro at room temperature. Upon treatment with the studied MHC NPs for 3 days, ALP was significantly elevated in BMSCs. In addition, the MHC NPs-treated BMSCs upregulated the expression of OPG and OCN, as shown by real-time PCR and western blot.Conclusion: MHC NPs have a stable metformin release effect and osteogenic ability. Therefore, as a derived synthetic biopolymer, it is expected to play a role in bone tissue regeneration.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate available evidence on the association between the human oral microbiota and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and summarize relevant data obtained during the pandemic.MethodsWe searched EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for human studies published up to October 2022. The main outcomes of the study were the differences in the diversity (α and β) and composition of the oral microbiota at the phylum and genus levels between patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection (CPs) and healthy controls (HCs). We used the Human Protein Atlas (HPA), Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database, Protein−protein interaction (PPI) network (STRING) and Gene enrichment analysis (Metascape) to evaluate the expression of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) (which is the cell receptor of SARS CoV-2) in oral tissues and evaluate its correlation with viral genes or changes in the oral microbiota.ResultsOut of 706 studies, a meta-analysis of 9 studies revealed a significantly lower alpha diversity (Shannon index) in CPs than in HCs (standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.53, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI): -0.97 to -0.09). Subgroup meta-analysis revealed a significantly lower alpha diversity (Shannon index) in older than younger individuals (SMD: -0.54, 95% CI: -0.86 to -0.23/SMD: -0.52, 95% CI: -1.18 to 0.14). At the genus level, the most significant changes were in Streptococcus and Neisseria, which had abundances that were significantly higher and lower in CPs than in HCs based on data obtained from six out of eleven and five out of eleven studies, respectively. DPP4 mRNA expression in the oral salivary gland was significantly lower in elderly individuals than in young individuals. Spearman correlation analysis showed that DPP4 expression was negatively correlated with the expression of viral genes. Gene enrichment analysis showed that DPP4-associated proteins were mainly enriched in biological processes, such as regulation of receptor-mediated endocytosis of viruses by host cells and bacterial invasion of epithelial cells.ConclusionThe oral microbial composition in COVID-19 patients was significantly different from that in healthy individuals, especially among elderly individuals. DPP4 may be related to viral infection and dysbiosis of the oral microbiome in elderly individuals.

China concurrently confronts acute water resource challenges and substantial carbon emissions, with its industrial sector being a significant freshwater consumer and a primary carbon emitter. China has committed to achieving carbon neutrality (CN) by 2060, yet the exact impact of this goal on industrial water withdrawal (IWW) remains unclear. Here, we project IWW in China considering both scenarios with and without the CN target, based on industry-specific water quota standards and projections of industrial product output. Our findings indicate a 53.76% (51.41 km ^3 ) reduction of IWW by 2060 under a CN scenario, compared to business-as-usual, with the IWW peak advancing from 2035 to 2025. The thermal power industry holds the largest water withdrawal reduction, accounting for 75.74% (38.94 km ^3 ) of the total reduction. Additionally, both the East coastal region and the Middle Yangtze River region could reduce 62.08% (31.96 km ^3 ) of IWW under the CN scenario, with Jiangsu province emerging as a significant contributor. This study provides a reliable basis for evaluating the potential for future water withdrawal reduction within the industrial sector and suggests that achieving the CN target could offer a promising direction for alleviating China’s water scarcity challenges.

Abstract Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is a promising method for the repair of difficult-to-heal bone tissue damage by providing three-dimensional structures for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been introduced as an effective global medical program by the World Health Organization, comprising intricate components, and promoting bone regeneration by regulating multiple mechanisms and targets. This study outlines the potential therapeutic capabilities of TCM combined with BTE in bone regeneration. The effective active components promoting bone regeneration can be generally divided into flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, and polyphenols, among others. The chemical structures of the monomers, their sources, efficacy, and mechanisms are described. We summarize the use of compounds and medicinal parts of TCM to stimulate bone regeneration. Finally, the limitations and prospects of applying TCM in BTE are introduced, providing a direction for further development of novel and potential TCM. Graphical Abstract

Abstract The immunological response occurring during periapical inflammation includes expression of nucleotide binding oligomerization domain containing 2 and hepcidin. Nucleotide binding oligomerization domain containing 2 deficiency increases infiltration of inflammatory cells close to alveolar bone. Hepcidin has an important role in iron metabolism affecting bone metabolism.We investigated the role of nucleotide binding oligomerization domain containing 2 and hepcidin in inflammatory periapical periodontitis. Periapical periodontitis was induced in rats and confirmed by micro-computed tomography. Nucleotide binding oligomerization domain 2 and hepcidin were evaluated through immunohistochemistry. Bioinformatics analysis was undertaken usingthe Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Ontology databases. Micro-computer tomography revealed alveolar bone resorption in the periapical region and furcation area of mandibular molars in rats of the periapical periodontitis group. Immunohistochemistry showed increased expressionof nucleotide binding oligomerization domain containing 2 and hepcidin around root apices in rats of the periapical periodontitis group. Bioinformatics analysis of differentially expressed genes in inflamed and non-inflamed tissues revealed enrichment in the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway. Our data suggest that nucleotide binding oligomization domain contain2 and hepcidin have important roles in periapical periodontitis severity because they can reduce alveolar bone loss.They could elicit new perspectives for development of novel strategies for periapical periodontitis treatment.

Articular cartilage degeneration has been proved to cause a variety of joint diseases, among which osteoarthritis is the most typical. Osteoarthritis is characterized by articular cartilage degeneration and persistent pain, which affects the quality of life of patients as well as brings a heavy burden to society. The occurrence and development of osteoarthritis is related to the disorder of the subchondral bone microenvironment. Appropriate exercise can improve the subchondral bone microenvironment, thus playing an essential role in preventing and treating osteoarthritis. However, the exact mechanism whereby exercise improves the subchondral bone microenvironment remains unclear. There is biomechanical interaction as well as biochemical crosstalk between bone and cartilage. And the crosstalk between bone and cartilage is the key to bone-cartilage homeostasis maintenance. From the perspective of biomechanical and biochemical crosstalk between bone and cartilage, this paper reviews the effects of exercise-mediated bone-cartilage crosstalk on the subchondral bone microenvironment, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of degenerative bone diseases.

BackgroundThe objective of this study was to develop the Chinese version of the biopsychosocial impact scale (BPIm-S) to assess functional limitation and psychosocial distress in orofacial pain (OFP) patients in mainland China, and investigate the factor structure, reliability and validity, measurement invariance, as well as scores differences across genders, age and educational status among OFP patients.MethodsThe BPIm-S was developed and evaluated in four stages: (1) concept selection and item generation; (2) a pilot study assessing face and content validity; (3) the factors structure, reliability, convergent validity, and measurement invariance; and (4) concurrent validity and clinical responsiveness. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed on data gathered from 406 OFP patients to assess construct validity. Composite Reliability (CR) and the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) were used to assess internal convergent validity. CR, internal consistency, and split-half reliability were also performed to determine the reliability. Multigroup CFA (MGCFA) was used to assess measurement invariance across genders, age and educational status. Mann–Whitney test compared scores across different genders, age and educational status. Participants completed the BPIm-S, visual analog scale (VAS), brief pain inventory facial (BPI-F), General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the concurrent validity and item-total correlations. A total of 12 patients with OFP completed the BPIm-S twice to test clinical responsiveness. To conduct the CFA and measurement invariance analysis, Mplus 8.4 was used. IBM SPSS Statistics 21 software and SPSSAU, a web-based data science algorithm platform tool, were used for all additional studies.ResultsFor the preliminary version, 17 items were chosen. A total of four items were removed following the pilot research. The remaining 13 items of the BPIm-S comprised an overall summary scale. Excellent reliability (Item-to-total correlations ranged from 0.763 to 0.912) and strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.970, functional limitation, 0.962, and psychosocial distress, 0.977) were discovered. CFA also validated the structural validity of the 13-item scale. EFA was performed and a two-factor structure was investigated. In addition, MGCFA corroborated the measurement invariance of the BPIm-S across gender, age, and educational status. Patients over the age of 30, those with a medium level of education, and those with a low level of education showed substantially greater levels of functional limitation and psychological distress (Wilcoxon test, p < 0.001). Both concurrent validity and clinical responsiveness were assessed to be of good quality.ConclusionThe BPIm-S demonstrated good psychometric qualities and is a reliable tool that can now be used by clinicians to evaluate functional limitation and psychosocial distress among OFP patient.

BackgroundThe progress of Moyamoya disease (MMD) is often accompanied by the occurrence of new ischemia or hemorrhagic events, which was difficult to predict. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify predictors for progression in MMD patients.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases up to December 10th, 2022 for randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, or cohort studies reporting predictors of disease progression in MMD patients. The results of each predictor were pooled by meta-analysis and further analyzed by subgroup analysis for predictors of unilateral to bilateral progression of MMD.ResultsA total of 842 patients from 12 studies were included. The estimated pooled means indicated lower age (standard mean difference [SMD]: −0.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.55 to −0.03; P = 0.03), family history (odds ratio [OR] 3.97, 95% CI: 1.96 to 8.03; P < 0.001) and contralateral abnormality (OR 3.95, 95% CI: 1.10 to 14.20; P = 0.04) were associated with progression in MMD patients. Subgroup analyses indicated that the same three factors were associated with the progression of unilateral to bilateral MMD.ConclusionsThis meta-analysis revealed that lower age, family history and contralateral abnormality were associated with progression in MMD patients. The same three factors are associated with the progression of unilateral to bilateral MMD. Further studies are needed to validate our results.

Background: Glutathione S-transferase kappa 1 (GSTK1) is critical in sarcoma and breast cancer (BRCA) development. However, the clinical significance of GSTK1 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) remains unclear. This study is the first investigation into the role of GSTK1 in HNSC.Methods: All original data were downloaded from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset and verified by R Base Package 4.2.0. The expression of GSTK1 in various cancers was explored with TIMER and TCGA databases. Prognostic value of GSTK1 was analyzed via survival module of Kaplan-Meier plotter and Human Protein Atlas database and Cox regression analysis. The association between GSTK1 and clinical features was evaluated by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and logistic regression analysis. The relationship between GSTK1 and immune infiltration and methylation level was further explored. The expression of GSTK1 and its correlation with immune cell infiltration was verified by Immunohistochemical staining (IHC).Results: GSTK1 was lower in HNSC, BRCA, Lung squamous cell carcinoma, and Thyroid carcinoma than in para-carcinoma. Low GSTK1 expression was associated with worse overall survival in Bladder urothelial carcinoma, Kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma, BRCA, and HNSC. However, only in BRCA and HNSC, GSTK1 expression in tumors was lower than that in normal tissues. Cox regression analyses confirmed that GSKT1 was an independent prognostic factor of overall survival in HNSC patients. The decrease in GSTK1 expression in HNSC was significantly correlated with high T stage and smoker history. IHC showed that the expression level of GSTK1 in HNSC was lower than that in para-carcinoma. In addition, GSEA showed that three pathways related to immune infiltration were positively correlated, while two pathways related to DNA methylation were negatively correlated with expression of GSTK1. Further analysis showed that GSTK1 was moderately positively correlated with the infiltration level of T cells and Cytotoxic cells, which was further confirmed by IHC. The methylation level of GSTK1 was associated with prognosis in patients with HNSC.Conclusion: Low GSTK1 expression may be a potential molecular marker for poor prognosis in HNSC and provide new insight for the development of diagnostic marker or therapeutic target.

A PVA aerogel/TiO2/MoS2/Au catalyst formed gradually using a hydrothermal method is used to degrade Rhodamine B. SEM and TEM results show that the composite presents a uniform and well-structured porous network structure, high specific surface area and large pore diameter were proved by the results of nitrogen adsorption measurement. UV–vis DRS and PL results indicate that the composite has a high absorption rate in the visible light range, and the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs can be effectively inhibited because the composite material forms a heterojunction. In the photocatalytic degradation experiment of Rhodamine B, the composite material shows high photocatalytic performance, which can reach 86% in two hours of light. The photocatalysts supported by PVA are easy to recover and have high catalytic performance even after five recycles. The study shows that PVA/TiO2/MoS2/Au composite material has great potential to be used for the degradation of dye wastewater. An asexual fungus, collected from diseased leaves of Paphiopedilum sp. from Guizhou Province, China, and based on the phylogenetic analyses and morphological characters, it was identified as a new species in Curvicladiella. The genus Curvicladiella are recorded for the first time for China.The morphology of Curvicladiella paphiopedili sp. nov. is characterised by penicillate conidiophores with a stipe, dull, tapering towards the apex, the curved stipe extension and cylindrical conidia. In the phylogenetic analyses of combined cmdA, his3, ITS, LSU, tef1 and tub2 sequence data, this taxon was clustered as sister to Curvicladiella cignea within Nectriaceae.

Understanding the reduction of CO2 and the origin and evolution of early life on Earth is an important research endeavor. Pyrite, due to its semiconductor properties, is believed to play a pivotal role as a reactant or catalyst in converting reducing gases, such as CO2, into organic matter. In this study, we employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the reduction of CO2 in the presence of H2S on the surface of pyrite. Our findings reveal that the presence of sulfur vacancies enhances the adsorption of H2S and CO2 molecules onto the pyrite surface. Interestingly, we observed the generation of the HCOOH molecule on the defective pyrite surface. Additionally, the transition state analysis indicates that H2S and CO2 molecules require the overcoming of an energy barrier (Ea) of 36.93 kJ/mol to form the HCOOH molecule. This study sheds light on the role of pyrite in the early creation of life on Earth by elucidating its impact on the reduction of carbon dioxide.

BackgroundAffected by the COVID-19, many colleges have adopted online teaching. Meanwhile, the digital transformation of academic journals has shifted readers’ reading habits from traditional paper media to digital media. Digital academic reading has become the main reading method of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral characteristics of college students’ digital academic reading and explore the internal factors and external environmental factors affecting the Intention and Use behavior of digital academic reading. At the same time this study provide recommendations to address these influencing factors in terms of the individual, the environment and library resources.MethodsBased on UTAUT2 model and digital academic reading theories, this paper constructs a digital academic reading information behavior (DARB) model of college students to examine college students’ digital academic reading behavior and intention. College students with digital academic reading behavior were recruited as research participants. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect representative samples from universities in Nanjing. 239 respondents participated in the questionnaire, with 189 providing valid data. Results: Effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), price value (PV), perceived risk (PR) and habit (BH) have a significant impact on behavioral intention (BI), and behavioral intention (BI) and habit (BH) have a significant impact on use behavior (B). However, performance expectancy (PE) and facilitating conditions (FC) have no significant influence on behavioral intention (BI).Originality/valueThe findings of this study will help fill the gap in previous research on the relationship between the influencing factors of digital academic reading and college students’ reading intentions and behaviors, so as to provide a basis for improving the academic reading literacy program in colleges and optimizing the current digital academic reading environment.

BackgroundAs periodontitis progresses, the oral microbiota community changes dynamically. In this study, we evaluated the dominant bacteria and their roles in the potential pathway in young males with stage III periodontitis.Methods16S rRNA sequencing was performed to evaluate variations in the composition of oral bacteria between males with stage I and III periodontitis and identify the dominant bacteria of each group. Function prediction was obtained based on 16S rRNA sequencing data. The inhibitor of the predominant pathway for stage III periodontitis was used to investigate the role of the dominant bacteria in periodontitis in vivo and in vitro.ResultsChao1 index, Observed Species and Phylogenetic Diversity (PD) whole tree values were significantly higher in the stage III periodontitis group. β-diversity suggested that samples could be divided according to the stages of periodontitis. The dominant bacteria in stage III periodontitis were Prevotella, Prevotella_7, and Dialister, whereas that in stage I periodontitis was Cardiobacterium. KEGG analysis predicted that variations in the oral microbiome may be related to the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway. The inhibitor of this pathway, NOD-IN-1, decreased P. intermedia -induced Tnf-α mRNA expression and increased P. intermedia -induced Il-6 mRNA expression, consistent with the ELISA results. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the down-regulation of TNF-α and IL-6 expressions by NOD-IN-1 in P. intermedia–induced periodontitis.ConclusionThe composition of the oral bacteria in young males varied according to the stage of periodontitis. The species richness of oral microtia was greater in young males with stage III periodontitis than those with stage I periodontitis. Prevotella was the dominant bacteria in young males with stage III periodontitis, and inhibition of the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway can decrease the periodontal inflammation induced by P. intermedia.

ObjectivePeriodontitis progression is related to the dynamic dysbiosis of oral microbiome. We identified the dominant bacteria and the potential pathway in young women with stage-III periodontitis.Materials and methodsSamples of subgingival plaque were collected from 26 young women with periodontitis (20 with stage-I and 6 with stage-III). Using 16S rRNA-sequencing, we determined the variation in oral bacterial communities of the two groups, and identified the dominant bacteria of each group. We used the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database to evaluate the signaling pathways related to the difference in oral bacterial composition. The role of the dominant bacteria of stage-III periodontitis was investigated in vivo and in vitro using an endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitor.ResultsYoung women with stage-I periodontitis had higher values for the Chao1 Index, Observed Species and Phylogenetic Diversity Whole Tree Index than those for women with stage-III periodontitis. β-diversity analyses revealed that samples could be divided into different groups according to the periodontitis stage. The most representative biomarkers of stage-III periodontitis in young women were bacteria of the phylum Bacteroidetes, its order, family and genera Bacteroidales, Prevotellaceae and Prevotella. The KEGG database revealed that the change in oral bacterial composition of young women with stage-III periodontitis may be related to protein processing in an endoplasmic reticulum pathway. Salubrinal (an endoplasmic reticulum stress regulator) controlled expression of Runx2, Col1a1, Ocn in mouse bone-marrow mesenchymal cells. Salubrinal administration showed that moderate endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibited alveolar bone loss in periodontitis induced by Prevotella intermedia lipopolysaccharide.ConclusionDifferences between periodontitis stages were noted and bacteria of Prevotella species were abundant in young women with stage-III periodontitis. This phenomenon was related to protein processing in an endoplasmic reticulum pathway.

PurposeOnly approximately half of anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) patients receiving endovascular treatment (EVT) have a favorable outcome. The aim of this study was to explore the association of dynamic inflammatory markers (i.e., neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios, NLR, measured at different times after EVT) as well as other potential influencing factors with unfavorable outcome among acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients who achieved complete reperfusion after EVT.MethodsPatients treated with EVT for LVO between January 2019 to December 2021 were prospectively enrolled. Complete reperfusion was defined as modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction (mTICI) grade 3. A modified Rankin scale at 90 days (mRS90) of 3–6 was defined as unfavorable outcome (i.e., futile reperfusion). A logistic regression analysis was performed with unfavorable outcome as a dependent variable. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC) were then used to determine the diagnostic values of NLR and other relevant factors.Results170 patients with complete reperfusion (mTICI 3) were included in this study. Unfavorable outcome was observed in 70 (41.2%). Higher NLR within 24h (p=0.017) and at 3-7d (p=0.008) after EVT were an independent risk factors for unfavorable outcome at 3 months. In addition, older age, higher NIHSS scores, poor collaterals, and general anesthesia were independent predictors of unfavorable outcomes. When accounting for NLR, the diagnostic efficiency improved compared to conventional characteristics.ConclusionOur findings suggest that advanced age, increased stroke severity, poor collaterals, general anesthesia, and NLR are independent predictors for an unfavorable clinical outcome following complete reperfusion after EVT. Neuroinflammation may merit particular attention in future studies.

Introduction Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) using stent retrievers or a direct aspiration first-pass technique has proven to yield better results over intravenous thrombolysis in treating acute ischaemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion (LVO). However, the treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis-related LVO remains unclear and has been a critical problem in daily clinical practice, as it can cause a relatively high failure rate for MT. Whether direct angioplasty and/or stenting is clinically feasible and shows advantage in reducing delay to revascularisation with better functional outcome compared with MT with rescue angioplasty and/or stenting remains unclear. This study seeks to provide direct and practical clinical evidence for clinicians.Methods and analysis The main databases of PubMed, the Cochrane library, Embase and Web of Science will be screened for related studies published after1 January 2015. Primary outcomes include successful recanalisation and 90-day favourable outcome. Secondary outcomes include puncture to revascularisation time, vascular complication (perforation, dissection and vasospasm), intracerebral haemorrhage, hospital-related complications and 90-day mortality. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale will be adopted to assess risk bias of observational studies. The I2 statistic will be used to assess heterogeneity.Ethics and dissemination No primary data of patients are needed. Therefore, ethics approval is unnecessary. The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.PROSPERO registration number CRD42021268061.

BackgroundThree-dimensional (3D) exoscope systems have been developed and are reported to be adequate alternatives to the conventional microscope. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectivity of microvascular anastomosis using a 4 K 3D exoscope in an in vivo animal study.MethodsThe abdominal aortas of mice were selected as the target vessels for comparing the outcomes of microvascular anastomosis for both the conventional microscope and 3D exoscope. We recorded the vessel separation, temporary occlusion, and total procedure durations. Local conditions at the sutures were also recorded. Typical histopathological images were presented, and the patency of anastomotic vessels within 5 and 30 min were evaluated. All procedures included both superficial and deep anastomosis.ResultsSixty mice were included in the analysis; the weight and vascular diameter were 38.5 ± 5.8 g and 0.77 ± 0.06 mm, respectively, and around 8 stiches were required. Regarding feasibility, vessel separation duration, temporary occlusion duration, total procedure duration, blood leak, and number of vascular folds between stiches, the results were comparable between the two types of microscopes. The feasibility of anastomosis was also confirmed by pathology. Regarding effectiveness, anastomotic vascular patency at 5 and 30 min were similar for both microscopes. Even in the more difficult scenario of deep anastomosis, the results were comparable.ConclusionsIn a challenging experimental setting, comparable outcomes of microvascular anastomosis were observed for the conventional microscope and 3D exoscope in these animal experiments. Therefore, in vivo microvascular anastomosis is feasible and effective using a 3D exoscope.

Background and purposeIn the landmark trials studying endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), pre-stroke dependent (PSD) patients were generally excluded. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of EVT between PSD and pre-stroke independent (PSI) patients.MethodsWe searched CENTRAL, Embase, and Ovid MEDLINE up to 11 November 2021 for studies assessing PSD and PSI patients, which were separately defined as pre-stroke mRS score >2 or >1, and ≤2 or ≤1 accordingly. Two authors extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. A meta-analysis was carried out using the random-effects model. Adjusted OR and 95% CI were used to estimate adjusted pool effects. The main outcomes included favorable outcomes, successful recanalization, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, and 90-day mortality.ResultsA total of 8,004 records met the initial search strategy, and ten studies were included in the final decision. Compared with PSImRS≤2, PSDmRS>2 had a lower favorable outcome (OR 0.51; 95% CI, 0.33–0.79) and higher 90-day mortality (OR 3.32; 95% CI, 2.77–3.98). No significant difference was found in successful recanalization and sICH. After adjustment, only 90-day mortality (aOR 1.99; 95% CI, 1.58–2.49) remained significantly higher in PSDmRS>2. Compared with PSImRS≤1, PSDmRS>1 had lower 90-day mortality (OR, 3.10; 95% CI, 1.84–5.24). No significant difference was found regarding the favorable outcome, successful recanalization, and sICH. After adjustment, no significant difference was found in a favorable outcome, but a higher rate of 90-day mortality (aOR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.66–2.72) remained in PSDmRS>1.ConclusionsPSD does not innately influence the EVT outcomes regarding sICH and favorable outcomes but may increase the risk of 90-day mortality. Until further evidence is available, it is reasonable to suggest EVT for patients with PSD.

ObjectiveCarotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been considered as “gold standard” treatment for patients with significant carotid stenosis Intra-operative hypotension was a risk factor for post-operative complications in patients undergoing CEA. This study aimed to investigate the predictors for intra-operative hypotension during CEA.MethodsThis retrospective study included consecutive patients underwent CEA from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021 in the neurosurgery department of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. The intraoperative hypotension was defined as blood pressure (BP) of 20% below standard value for longer than 5 min. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to identify the prediction of risk factors for intraoperative hypotension.ResultsOverall, 367 patients were included, and 143 (39.0%) patients had hypotension during CEA procedure. Univariate analysis indicated Grade 3 hypertension (P = 0.002), peripheral artery disease (P = 0.006) and shunting (P = 0.049) were associated with occurrence of intraoperative hypotension during CEA procedure. On multivariable analysis, Grade 3 hypertension (P = 0.005), peripheral artery disease (P = 0.009), and shunting (P = 0.034) were all found to be independent predicting factors of hypotension during the CEA process.ConclusionIntraoperative hypotension is a dynamic phenomenon may be affected by patients with grade 3 hypertension, peripheral artery disease and intra-operative shunting. It is necessary to pay special attention to these patients, both intraoperatively and postoperatively, to improve the final clinical outcome.
