4. Mid-T Heat Treatments on BCPed Coaxial Cavities at TRIUMF

Abstract

Mid-T heat treatments in the range from 250 to 400 C on superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities have been shown to provide high quality factors that rise with applied rf field strength in high frequency, electro-polished (EP), elliptical cavities operating at 2K, similar to nitrogen doped cavities. The rise in quality factor is attributed to a decrease in the temperature dependent part of the surface resistance $R_{BCS}$. Until now, no results have been reported for these new treatments on quarter-wave resonators (QWR) and half-wave resonators (HWR). The TRIUMF multi-mode coaxial cavities are dedicated test cavities that allow frequency and temperature resolved performance characterization of treatments without changing environments, therefore providing an excellent test vehicle to test these new treatments with rf frequencies ranging from 200 to 1200 MHz. In this paper, performance measurements from both QWR and HWR cavities are reported and their performance compared with four different treatments: baseline, a conventional 120C low temperature bake for 48 hours, and two mid-T bakes at 300 and 400C for 3 hours. In addition, sample analysis using SEM, EDX and SIMS of witness samples is also shown. It is found that the mid-T bakes are not directly transferable to low frequency cavities. In the fundamental modes of the two test cavities, no performance gain over the baseline treatment nor a decreasing temperature dependent component with rising rf amplitude was observed. At frequencies above 1GHz and low temperatures, the mid-T bakes show a reduced field dependence of $R_{BCS}$ compared to both the baseline and 120C treatments.

Abstract

[Introduction] When inviting bids for domestic offshore wind power projects, the owner often puts forward requirements for the foundation top load and tower mass provided by the windturbine manufacture, and rarely put forward requirements for the the foundation mass provided by the design institute. During the detailed design stage, the windturbine manufacturer and the design institute optimize the tower and foundation respectively in turn, so it is usually difficult to get the global optimal design with the minimum total mass of the tower and foundation. [Method] An integrated test design method of offshore wind turbine tower and monopile was proposed. Through the test design of an offshore wind power project, several design schemes with different tower types, tower bottoms and monopile diameters were obtained, and the corresponding foundation top load, tower mass and monopile mass were obtained through load calculation and iterative optimization of tower and monopile design. [Result] The results show that the design with the smallest tower bottom load or tower mass is not the optimal one with the smallest mass of the whole support structure. The optimal support structure design with the lightest total mass of tower and monopile can be obtained by the experimental design method. [Conclusion] Based on the results of this paper, it is an effective method to reduce the cost of offshore wind power by adopting the integrated design of experiment of tower and monopile in finding the global optimum for the whole support structure. In the future offshore wind power bidding stage, the owner will formulate the optimal rules for the whole cost of the tower and monopile, and require the use of integrated design of experiment.

Abstract

Twelve superconducting single spoke cavities whose Beta is 0.12 (Spoke012) operating at 325MHz, are adopted in Injector I for China-ADS linac. This type of spoke cavity is believed to be one of the key challenges for its very low geometry Beta. So far, the prototype cavity has been designed, fabricated and tested successfully. The design work was finished by using CST-MWS and ANSYS software for the RF and mechanical properties optimization. This paper presents the details of the final design for Spoke012 prototype cavity.
