The one dimensional (1-D) self-assembly of p-electron molecules offers efficient strategies to enhance energy and charge transfer via highly ordered and conductive p-p stacking of the chromophores. The chromophore rich nanostructures have great potential to serve as promising candidate materials for optoelectronic devices. However, the design and control of highly ordered nanostructures with multicolored chromophore redox gradients require finely chosen synthetic strategies and a delicate balance of supramolecular interactions. Herein, we introduce a new strategy focused on self-assembly of nanofibers based on lysine derivatives functionalized with multi colored chromophores.In our design, we developed one-dimensional conductive supramolecular donor/acceptor heterojunctions (SHJs), which provide separated e- (electron) and h+ (hole) transporting channels via molecular assembly of self-organized bicontinuous electron donors and acceptors on the molecular level. So far, 1-D SHJs have been studied extensively; however, few examples of 1-D structural p/n-heterojunctions have been developed. The development of 1-D SHJs with oriented multicolored antiparallel redox gradients (OMARG-SHJs) is challenging due to the formidable synthetic and supramolecular chemistry. In our system naphthalene diimide (NDI) and its ethyloxide substituted NDIs have been selected for the electron acceptor cascade, because NDI chromophores demonstrate high electron mobility, decreasing HOMO-LUMO energies with increasing HOMO-LUMO energy differences, planarity which favors p-p stacking, and excellent on/off current ratio. Porphyrin was chosen as electron donor due to its electron rich properties, and p-p stacking planarity. The 1-D nanostructures and self-assembly process have been extensively studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Long range intermolecular energy migration along the 1-D nanostructures was characterized by time-resolved laser spectroscopy. This work provided a promising strategy for the development of more efficient optoelectronic nanodevices.
