Understanding the source of non-native introduced populations is crucial for forecasting geographic invasion potential and understanding the ecological consequences of potential establishment. Here we use genomics to identify the source populations and invasion dynamics of two non-native introduced populations from the iconic avian lineage of ‘great speciators’ known as white-eyes (genus Zosterops). We established confidently for the first time that introduced Zosterops populations in Hawaii and southern California are completely unrelated and derived from independent introductions of the species Z. japonicus and Z. simplex, respectively. We used descriptive population genetic statistics to identify a reduction in genetic diversity and increase in private alleles in the southern California population supporting a recent, potentially ongoing, genetic bottleneck in this population. In contrast, the introduced population in Hawaii showed no such characteristics, likely due to a larger founding population size and repeated introductions in this intentionally introduced population. Ecological niche modeling indicated that there is little environmentally suitable habitat for Z. simplex across the continent of North America, suggesting limited invasion potential, assuming niche conservatism. Yet, portions of the introduced Z. simplex population have already surpassed areas projected as suitable, likely because the urbanized environment of southern California offers biotic resources and microhabitats not captured by our model. Because Z. simplex appears to have overcome both the ‘invasion paradox’ of low founding genetic diversity and relatively unfamiliar environmental conditions in southern California, we suggest that this population may continue expanding beyond our environmental niche model projections in other temperate, urban regions.

In order to study the influence of basement inclination on the stability of the dump slope under rainfall conditions, according to the actual situation of Antaibao Open-pit Coal Mine, FLAC3D software was used to simulate the slope of the dump under the same rain intensity and different base inclination angles. The results show that in the early stage of rainfall, the saturation of the surface layer of the dump slope first grows rapidly and tends to the stable value of unsaturation, and when the rainfall infiltrates to the junction of the weak layer and bedrock, the rainwater accumulates at the slope angle under the action of gravity and leads to shear failure at the slope angle. With the increase of the basement inclination, the time lag effect occurred in each monitoring point when it reached saturation or steady state, and the displacement and strain increment were positively correlated with the substrate inclination.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of utilizing a BW (Buttress wall) to control the deflection of a diaphragm wall in colluvial soil conditions in Vietnam. The physical and mechanical properties of the colluvial layers are evaluated using data closely monitored during a specific project, serving as validation for 3D numerical simulations utilizing the Hardening Soil Model. The analysis results closely match the field monitoring data, which has tested the accuracy of the simulation model. This forms the basis for further investigations into the dimensional parameters of BW walls, including length, thickness, and spacing between them. The results obtained from the parametric study demonstrate that altering the wall length and spacing between BWwalls significantly limits the deflection of the diaphragm wall, while changes in thickness have a negligible effect. Through the 3D numerical simulations, a linear relationship between the maximum wall deflection and parameters such as wall length and spacing between BW walls has been established.

Abstract Background Powdery mildew, caused by Eeysiphe heraclei, seriously threatens Heracleum moellendorffii Hance. Plant secondary metabolites are essential to many activities and are necessary for defense against biotic stress. In order to clarify the functions of these metabolites in response to the pathogen, our work concentrated on the variations in the accumulation of secondary metabolites in H. moellendorffii during E. heraclei infection. Results Following E. heraclei infection, a significant upregulation of coumarin metabolites—particularly simple coumarins and associated genes was detected by RNA-seq and UPLC-MS/MS association analysis. Identifying HmF6’H1, a Feruloyl CoA 6’-hydroxylase pivotal in the biosynthesis of the coumarin basic skeleton through ortho-hydroxylation, was a significant outcome. The cytoplasmic HmF6’H1 protein was shown to be able to catalyze the ortho-hydroxylation of p-coumaroyl-CoA and caffeoyl-CoA, resulting in the formation of umbelliferone and esculetin, respectively. Over-expression of the HmF6’H1 gene resulted in increased levels of simple coumarins, inhibiting the biosynthesis of furanocoumarins and pyranocoumarins by suppressing PT gene expression, enhancing H. moellendorffii resistance to powdery mildew. Conclusions These results established HmF6’H1 as a resistance gene aiding H. moellendorffii in combatting E. heraclei infection, offering additional evidence of feruloyl-CoA 6’-hydroxylase role in catalyzing various types of simple coumarins. Therefore, this work contributes to our understanding of the function of simple coumarins in plants’ defense against powdery mildew infection.

The presence of high-density defects is rarely observed in bulk 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramics obtained through conventional pressureless sintering. In the present work, fine-grained dense 147 nm 3Y-TZP ceramics were prepared by pressureless sintering of commercial 0.25 wt% alumina-doped zirconia powders at 1300 ℃. A novel discovery was reported in which large amounts of defects were present in the grain interiors of the sample. The phenomenon was further examined using three types of powder samples, and the reasons for defect formation were investigated by microstructural characterization using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis and Rietveld refinement. The results confirmed the essential dependence of the defect formation on the alumina addition. The authors attributed the defect formation to the significant difference in ionic radii of the solvent and solute during the dissolution of alumina into the zirconia lattice. The sintering kinetics were proposed to be enhanced by the presence of substantial defects, which consequently favored the low-temperature sintering of the alumina-doped zirconia ceramics.

Changes in the porosity and permeability of oil shale under the overburden pressure often have a significant impact on the subsequent development of reservoirs. The authors of this article investigated the over burden porosity and permeability characteristics of tight oil reservoirs in two regions in China: the Fushun West Open-pit Mine in Liaoning and the Jimsar shale oilfield in Xinjiang. Overburden porosity and permeability experiments were conducted on oil shale cores. Three-dimensional visualization and quantitative analysis of the micropore structure of cores under different effective stresses were used to model the relationship between oil shale porosity, permeability, and effective stress. In addition, the stress sensitivity of oil shale reservoirs was analyzed, using the damage rates of permeability and stress sensitivity coefficients. The results indicated that in both regions, oil shale porosity and permeability exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing effective stress, following a negative exponential function. When the effective stress was less than 8 MPa, the permeability stress sensitivity coefficient decreased sharply. Once the effective stress exceeded 8 MPa, the stress sensitivity of permeability in both regions weakened, maintaining a range between 0.2 and 0.4 MPaâ1. The results of three-dimensional visualization simulations were the same as the experimental results. Taken together, the results showed that the porosity of different-sized pores decreased with increased stress, which reflected the synergistic effect of different-sized pores on porosity in shale. This study has practical significance for revealing the variation in pore size in shale reservoirs and establishing the physical characteristics of oil shale reservoirs.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) constitute a broad group of fluorinated organic chemicals that are widely used in consumer products and industrial applications due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Given that people spend a significant portion of their time in office environments, our understanding of the environmental presence and human exposure to these chemicals is crucial. In this study, we conducted a targeted analysis of 24 PFASs in office indoor environments. The ΣPFAS concentrations ranged from 51.6 to 219 ng/g with mean (±SE) and median concentrations of 114 (±5.75) and 107 ng/g, respectively. Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) was the most abundant emerging PFAS detected in the dust, with mean and median concentrations of 40.5 (±1.62) and 40.4 ng/g, respectively, comprising 34.2 % of the ΣPFAS concentrations. Objective: To systematically evaluate and synthesize quantitative evidence regarding the effects of pediatric massage in infants and children under five years. Review methods: We conducted searches in databases including MEDLINE, Embase, Health Technology Assessment Database, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Allied and Complementary Medicine, Embase, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, SinoMed, and CQVIP up to February 2024. Two reviewers independently screened articles, extracted data, and conducted quality appraisals on the included studies. We focused on systematic reviews with meta-analyses comparing pediatric tuina with a waitlist control, placebo, medication, massage combined with other interventions, and usual care. Outcomes analyzed included physical, psychological, developmental, and safety-related measures for children and their caregivers. Methodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2, and evidence quality was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Pooled effect estimates and heterogeneity were extracted for each meta-analyzed outcome. Evidence evaluated as ‘high’ and ‘moderate’ quality by GRADEpro with low heterogeneity are presented in the result section. Results: Twenty-two systematic reviews with meta-analysis of 81 outcomes were included. Seven studies (31.8 %) were high quality, and the evidence of 6 (7.4 %) outcomes were evaluated as high quality. The meta-analysis results demonstrate significant benefits of pediatric massage for infants compared to routine care, with increased weight gain (MD 455.07 g; 95 % CI 86.33 to 823.8; I2 = 0 %) based on 2 studies with 157 cases, length growth (MD 1.58 cm; 95 % CI 1.42 to 1.74; I2 = 25 %) from 9 studies with 1294 cases, reduced fussing (MD -0.37 time; 95 % CI -0.53 to -0.21; I2 = 30 %) according to 3 studies with 271 cases, and lower post-intervention bilirubin levels (3 studies/345 cases; MD -31.75 mmol/L; 95 % CI -40.05 to -23.46; I2 = 0 %). Pediatric massage was associated with reduced diarrhea incidence compared to waitlist controls (2 RCTs/310 cases; RR 0.39; 95 % CI 0.2 to 0.76; I2 = 0 %) and improved psychomotor development indices (4 RCTs/466 cases; SMD -0.35; 95 % CI -0.54 to -0.15; I2 = 1.06 %). Additionally, pediatric massage significantly enhanced blood oxygen saturation variation post-procedure for pain management (5 RCTs/355 cases; MD 1.05; 95 % CI 0.51 to 1.58; I2 = 0 %). Conclusions: Pediatric massage significantly enhances mother-child attachment, promotes physical growth, reduces fussing, lowers bilirubin levels, improves motor and psychomotor development, as well as manages digestive conditions and pain in children under 5 years. Future research should improve study quality and comprehensively report adverse events.

The underwater robot (UR) is an embodiment of interdisciplinary technologies, integrating underwater communication, machinery, marine science, computer science, and robotics. Although URs enable a highly engaging and exploratory construction that can foster children's engineering education and ocean literacy, little work has explored UR design and education for children. In this paper, we present a study using URs to engage children in exploring engineering, robotics, environmental science, and marine sustainability. We introduce ModBot, a modular UR-making toolkit for children that uses hardware blocks and software applications for UR creation. We describe a study with 31 children (ages 5-8; 16 girls and 15 boys) and report how they learned UR concepts such as buoyancy and balance through playing with the ModBot kit and creating their own URs. This study is intended to investigate how URs can be used to spark children's interest in water environments and make a connection to robotics by the creation of their own URs.

The goal of this study is to assess the application of the Hardening soil model in predicting the deformation of retaining walls of excavations in 2D and 3D finite element analysis at the Ho Chi Minh Metro project. Designed as the deepest underground station in the first metro line built in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Opera House station is located in an area with a dense building zone and close to historical buildings. A summary of the input soil properties is provided using data from site investigations, in-situ tests, and laboratory tests. By numerical simulation using the Hardening soil model, the parameters of the soil stiffness modulus value are verified based on the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), and Pressuremeter test (PMT). The obtained results of the numerical analysis by 2D and 3D finite element methods, and field observations indicate that applying the Hardening soil model with soil stiffness modulus obtained in situ tests gives reasonable results on the displacement of the retaining wall at the final phase. The relationship between the SPT value and the stiffness modulus of HCMC sand is a function of depth. This correlation is obtained through the comparison of wall deformation between the simulation and monitoring at the construction site. The results of the difference between 2D and 3D finite element analysis also are discussed in this study.

Abstract Childhood febrile seizures (FS) represent one of the most common types of seizures and may lead to severe neurological damage and an increased risk of epilepsy. However, most children with fevers do not show clinical manifestations of convulsions, and the consequences of hyperthermia without seizures remain elusive. This study focused on hyperthermia not reaching the individual’s seizure threshold (sub-FS stimulus). Changes in thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) levels, synapses, seizure susceptibility, and seizure severity in subsequent FS were investigated in rats exposed to sub-FS stimuli. Pharmacological and genetic interventions were used to explore the role of TSP-1 in sub-FS-induced effects. We found that after sub-FS stimuli, the levels of TSP-1 and synapses, especially excitatory synapses, were concomitantly increased, with increased epilepsy and FS susceptibility. Moreover, more severe neuronal damage was found in subsequent FS. These changes were temperature dependent. Reducing TSP-1 levels by genetic intervention or inhibiting the activation of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) by Leu-Ser-Lys-Leu (LSKL) led to lower synapse/excitatory synapse levels, decreased epileptic susceptibility, and attenuated neuronal injury after FS stimuli. Our study confirmed that even without seizures, hyperthermia may promote synaptogenesis, increase epileptic and FS susceptibility, and lead to more severe neuronal damage by subsequent FS. Inhibition of the TSP-1/TGF-β1 pathway may be a new therapeutic target to prevent detrimental sub-FS sequelae.
