Based on thermodynamics of spillover hydrogen storage in Pd-based bimetals@Ti3C2Tx, we report that the debatable topic on catalytic activity and selectivity during hydrogen spillover can be settled through determining adsorption enthalpies of spilled H species.

This paper presents the design of a new type of intelligent and versatile all-in-one therapeutic nanoplatform for the co-delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs and photosensitizers to facilitate multimodal antitumor treatment; the system is based on hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified manganese dioxide (MnO2)-enveloped hollow porous copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles (CuS@MnO2/HA NPs). In this system, a CuS inner shell allows for the co-loading of doxorubicin (DOX) and indocyanine green (ICG) and induces photothermal effects, and a biodegradable MnO2 external shell affords on-demand tumor microenvironment (TME)-triggered release and catalase- andFenton-like activities. Moreover, the HA modification endows the system with a CD44 receptor-mediated tumor-targeting property. The formulated DOX and ICG co-loaded CuS@MnO2/HA (DOX/ICG-CuS@MnO2/HA) NPs were found to exhibit excellent photothermal performance both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, DOX/ICG-CuS@MnO2/HA NPs were found to display both TME and near-infrared (NIR)-responsive controlled release properties. The NPs also have a superior reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capacity due to the combination of enhanced ICG-induced singlet oxygen and CuS@MnO2-mediated hydroxyl radicals. The cellular uptake, fluorescence imaging property, cytotoxicity, and thermal imaging of these NPs were also evaluated. In tumor-bearing mice, the DOX/ICG-CuS@MnO2/HA NPs displayeda superior antitumor efficacy (2.57-fold) as compared with free DOX. Therefore, the developed DOX/ICG-CuS@MnO2/HA NPs have a great potential for use as an all-in-one nanotherapeutic agent for the efficient and precise induction of chemo/photothermal/photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy with superior antitumor efficacy and fewer side effects.

Topical drug delivery methods are important in the treatment of skin diseases. Drug nanocrystals, which are nanometersized particles of active pharmaceutical ingredients, offer efficient topical delivery with high stability, high drug loading capacity, steady dissolution, and sustained drug release profiles. The use of nanocrystals for the topical delivery of skin disease therapies is currently being evaluated; this review focuses on how nanocrystals facilitate active pharmaceutical ingredient transport across skin barriers, exploring the underlying transportation mechanisms of the nanocrystals and active pharmaceutical ingredient molecules to the dermal and epidermal skin cells. In topical delivery, previous skin treatments, choice of excipients and vehicles, and penetration enhancement strategies critically influence the topical delivery of drug nanocrystals. Various research and applications of drug nanocrystals in skin disease therapy are highlighted in this review, and intellectual property protection for drug nanocrystal formulations, clinical trial data, and products with commercial potential are also discussed.

Lethal neonatal rigidity and multifocal seizure syndrome (RMFSL, OMIM 614498) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by the onset of rigidity and intractable seizures at or soon after birth. The BRAT1 has been identified to be the disease-causing gene for RMFSL. This study aimed to determine the underlying pathogenic mutations of a Chinese family with RMFSL and to confirm the effect of the splice-site mutation by reverse transcription analysis.Detailed family history and clinical data were recorded, and peripheral blood samples were collected from all available family members. Whole exome sequencing (WES), Sanger sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis were performed to investigate the causative variants. The impact of the intronic variant on splicing was subsequently analyzed by RT-PCR analysis.We identified two compound heterozygous variants in the BRAT1, c.431-2AG in intron 3 and c.1359_1361del(p.Leu454del) in exon 9 in the proband, one inherited from each parent. Furthermore, the 3'-splice site acceptor (c.431-2AG) variant was found to activate a cryptic acceptor splice site, which resulted in the loss of 29 nucleotides and generation of a premature stop codon at code 180, producing a truncated BRAT1 (c.432_460del; p.Ala145Argfs*36).This research identified two mutations in the BRAT1 of one Chinese family with RMFSL. These data can aid in developing clinical diagnoses as well as providing genetic counseling and prenatal interventions to the family. These findings also expand our knowledge of the spectrum of BRAT1 pathogenic variants in RMFSL syndrome.

An efficient strategy for short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from sludge anaerobic fermentation was proposed with the combination of yeast and alkyl polyglucose (APG). It revealed that the synergetic effect of yeast and APG could boost the SCFA concentration to the maximum value of 2800.34 mg COD/L within 9 days at 0.20 g/g suspended solids (SS) yeast and 0.20 g/g SS APG, which was significantly higher than that of its counterparts. Interestingly, the sludge solubilization, the biodegradability of fermentation substrate, as well as the acidification of hydrolyzed products, was evidently improved in the coexistence of APG and yeast. The activities of hydrolytic enzymes and acetate kinase were also stimulated, whereas the coenzyme F420 was inhibited. The synergetic effect of yeast and APG used in this work enriches the study of carbon resource recovery from sludge anaerobic fermentation.

In this study, a new type of β-1,3-d-glucan porous microcapsule (GPM)-enveloped and folate conjugated chitosan-functional liposome (FCL), FCL@GPM, was developed for the potential oral co-delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs and quantum dots (QDs) with facilitated drug absorption and antitumor efficacy. In this dual-particulate system, multiple FCLs serve as the cores for effective loading, folate-mediated tumor-targeting, facilitated intracellular accumulation, and pH-responsive controlled release of chemotherapeutic agents, while a GPM acts as the shell for affording macrophage-mediated tumor selectivity. Gefitinib (GEF) was selected as a chemotherapeutic agent, while acid degradable ZnO QDs were selected due to their dual role as an anticancer agent for synergistic chemotherapy and as a fluorescent probe for potential cancer cellular imaging. The GEF and ZnO QD co-loaded FCL@GPMs (GEF/ZnO-FCL@GPMs) exhibited a prolonged release manner with limited release before uptake by intestinal cells. Furthermore, Peyer's patch uptake, macrophage uptake, cytotoxicity, and biodistribution of FCL@GPMs were tested. In addition, GEF and ZnO QD co-loaded FCLs (GEF/ZnO-FCLs) not only have a tumor acidity responsive release property, but also induce a superior cytotoxicity on cancer cells as compared to GEF. Moreover, a 1.75-fold increase in the bioavailability of GEF delivered from GEF/ZnO-FCL@GPMs as compared to its trademarked drug (Iressa®). As a result, GEF/ZnO-FCL@GPMs exerted a superior antitumor efficacy (1.47-fold) as compared to the trademarked drug in mice. Considered together, the developed FCL@GPMs, combining the unique physicochemical and biological benefits of FCLs and GPMs, possess great potential as an efficient delivery system for the co-delivery of chemotherapeutic agents and quantum dots.

The goal of this work was to elucidate the ability of biochar materials prepared by different methods to degrade antibiotics by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). S atom was doped into biochar using diphenyl disulfide (DD), sodium thiosulfate (ST), and thiourea (TU) as S precursors. The different doped materials were used to activate PMS and tested for the ability to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride, sulfadiazine sodium salt, and levofloxacin hydrochloride. The average degradation efficiencies of DD-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (DD-HPBC), TU-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (TU-HPBC), and ST-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (ST-HPBC) were 83.76%, 86.74%, and 93.60%, respectively, all higher than the degradation efficiency of the undoped material. When sodium thiosulfate-doped pyrocarbon (ST-PBC), hydrochar (ST-HBC), and hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (ST-HPBC) were used to activate PMS, the highest degradation efficiencies were achieved, with average rates of 71.59%, 78.22% and 97.20%, respectively. Background. As a chronic inflammatory disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) usually leads to cartilage and bone damage, even disability. Earlier detection and diagnosis are crucial to improve the therapeutic efficacy, and the aim of our study is to identify a potential diagnostic signature for RA. Methods. We downloaded the GSE124373 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. And differential expression analysis of miRNAs was conducted using the limma package of R language. The potential targeted mRNAs of differentially expressed miRNAs were predicted using the MiRTarBase database. The clusterProfiler package in R language was used to conduct functional enrichment analysis (GO term and KEGG pathway). Then, based on the key miRNAs screened by stepwise regression analysis, the logistic regression model was built and it was evaluated using a 5-fold cross-validation method. Results. A total of 19 differentially expressed miRNAs in the blood sample of RA patients compared with that of healthy subjects were identified. Nine optimal miRNAs were screened by using stepwise regression analysis, and four key miRNAs hsa-miR-142-5p, hsa-miR-1184, hsa-miR-1246, and hsa-miR-99b-5p were further optimized. Finally, a logistic regression model was built based on the four key miRNAs, which could reliably separate RA patients from healthy subjects. Conclusion. Our study established a logistic regression diagnostic model based on four crucial miRNAs, which could separate the sample type reliably.

Background This study aimed to investigate alcohol consumption and associated factors in middle-aged and older adults. Materials and methods We included 15,942 participants (7,384 men, 8558 women) with age range of 45-101 years from the 2011 baseline survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Variables related to alcohol status and other potential risk factors were selected for analysis. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the factors associated with drinking. Results There was a significantly higher proportion of current drinkers among men than women (36.42% ± 0.86% vs. 3.73% ± 0.27%). Among the current drinkers, proportions of binge drinking, heavy drinking and daily drinking were 38.2, 53.0, 57.5% for men and 10.9, 37.2, 36.2% for women, respectively. Factors significantly associated with current drinking were age, health situation, smoking, geographic region, work status and social activities among men, and age, smoking, geographic region and work status among women. The favorite type of alcohol was spirits for both men and women. The type of beverage intake was also related socio- cultural-demographic factors as mentioned above. Conclusions Alcohol consumption behaviors and type of beverage was significantly influenced by socio- cultural-demographic factors. The socio-cultural-demographic factors affecting alcohol patterns should be further focused on to promote the development of alcohol control strategies.

Background: LncRNA plays an important role in the gene regulatory network and can affect the progress of tumors. LncRNA TM4SF19-AS1 has been reported may associate with the occurrence and development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: LncRNA TM4SF19-AS1 expression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) tissue samples was evaluated in TCGA database, and its expression in LSCC tissues and cells was further determined via qRT-PCR. CCK-8, EdU, wound healing and transwell assays were performed to access the cell biological behaviors of TM4SF19-AS1. The downstream regulatory mechanism of TM4SF19-AS1 regulating gene expression was further detected by WGCNA, subcellular location prediction, western blot and dual-luciferase reporter assay.Results: The expression of TM4SF19-AS1 was upregulated in LSCC tissues and positively correlated with tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage and lymph node metastasis in LSCC patients. Knockdown of TM4SF19-AS1 suppressed the proliferation, migration and invasion of LSCC cells. Mechanistically, TM4SF19-AS1 acted as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) that directly bound to miR-153-3p, and ITGAV was the direct target of miR-153-3p.Conclusions: LncRNA TM4SF19-AS1 promotes the proliferation, migration and invasion of laryngeal carcinoma by targeting miR-153-3p/ITGAV axis, suggesting that TM4SF19-AS1 could be a potential diagnostic biomarker and an effective target for the treatment for LSCC.

Third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)L858R/T790M inhibitors are still the main drugs for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and these drugs have achieved remarkable clinical efficacy. However, there are still many patients suffering from drug-resistant mutations and drug side effects caused by NSCLC. In this study, guided by the molecular simulation, we applied a structure-based drug design strategy (SBDD) and optimized the structure to obtain a series of potent and selective EGFRL858R/T790M inhibitors. The most potent compound 18e demonstrated excellent kinase inhibitory activity and selectivity for EGFRL858R/T790M double mutants and the IC50 value reached nanomolar level. The selectivity of 18e against wild-type EGFR was near to 200-fold. In addition, compound 18e also inhibited H1975 cells proliferation at G2/M phase and induced apoptosis at a concentration of 0.25 μM, which makes it more valuable for potential lung cancer research.

Raw Huai Flos Chrysanthemum (HFC) and modified HFC (HFC@CO) were used for the first time as a biosorbent material to remove cationic dyes Malachite green (MG) and Crystal violet (CV), and anionic dyes Sunset yellow (SY), Lemon yellow (LY), and Carmine (CM), at different temperatures (5–50 °C). The highest removal rates (R) for dye adsorption were observed at low temperature (5 °C) and room temperature (20 °C). At high (500 mg L−1) dye concentration, adsorption was completed within one minute, but the time required to reach adsorption equilibrium was longer than at the low (20 mg L−1) concentration. The experimental data fitted very well to the Langmuir model and the values of the maximum adsorption capacity for SY, LY, CM, CV, and MG, were 481.41, 507.23, 141.78 mg g−1, 526.32, and 769.23 mg L−1, respectively. The adsorption data fit well to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

A growing amount of evidence has confirmed the crucial role of the prolyl isomerase PIN1 in aging and age-related diseases. However, the mechanism of PIN1 in age-related hearing loss (ARHL) remains unclear. Pathologically, ARHL is primarily due to the loss and dysfunction of hair cells (HCs) and spiral ganglion cells (SGCs) in the cochlea. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the role of PIN1 in protecting hair cells and auditory HEI-OC1 cells from senescence. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence were used to detect the PIN1 protein level in the serum of ARHL patients and C57BL/6 mice in different groups, and in the SGCs and HCs of young and aged C57BL/6 mice. In addition, a model of HEI-OC1 cell senescence induced by H2O2 was used. Adult C57BL/6 mice were treated with juglone, or juglone and NAC, for 4 weeks. Interestingly, we found that the PIN1 protein expression decreased in the serum of patients with ARHL, in senescent HEI-OC1 cells, and in the cochlea of aged mice. Moreover, under H2O2 and juglone treatment, a large amount of ROS was produced, and phosphorylation of p53 was induced. Importantly, PIN1 expression was significantly increased by treatment with the p53 inhibitor pifithrin-α. Overexpression of PIN1 reversed the increased level of p-p53 and rescued HEI-OC1 cells from senescence. Furthermore, PIN1 mediated cellular senescence by the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. In vivo data from C57BL/6 mice showed that treatment with juglone led to hearing loss. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that PIN1 may act as a vital modulator in hair cell and HEI-OC1 cell senescence.

Background. To ascertain the seasonal pattern and global public interest in osteoporosis by evaluating search term popularity changes of the disease over a decade. Methods. We applied Google Trends to retrieve search popularity scores for the term “osteoporosis” between January 01, 2004, and December 31, 2019. Cosinor analyses were conducted to examine the seasonality of osteoporosis, and analysis on osteoporosis-related topics including hot topics and rising-related topics was also performed. Results. The cosinor analyses demonstrated a statistically significant seasonal variation in relative search volume of the “osteoporosis” in the world ( p = 0.0083 ), USA ( p < 0.001 ), UK ( p < 0.001 ), Canada ( p < 0.001 ), Ireland ( p < 0.001 ), Australia ( p < 0.001 ), and New Zealand ( p < 0.001 ), with a peak in the late winter months and trough in the summer months. The peaks in late winter and valley in summer presented an approximately 6-month difference between hemispheres. The top 11 rising topics were denosumab, FRAX, hypocalcaemia, zoledronic acid, ibandronic acid, osteomyelitis, osteopenia, osteoarthritis, bone, calcium, and bone density. Conclusions. Google search query volumes related to osteoporosis follow strong seasonal patterns with late winter peaks and summer troughs. Further studies aimed at elucidating the possible mechanisms behind seasonality in osteoporosis are needed. Moreover, Internet data including the top rising topics may alert physicians to strengthen the propaganda of osteoporosis timely, so as to further promote the development of public health interventions.

We show that persistent free radicals (PFRs) on the surface of biochar can produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by catalyzing H2O2 to facilitate the removal of the combined pollutant BPA-Cr(VI). Microstructure characterization showed that the structures of pyrocarbon and hydrochar were significantly different when prepared at different temperatures. As the preparation temperature and preparation time for biochar increased, the concentration of PFRs first increased and then decreased. When biochar, PFRs, and H2O2 were present in the same solution, the single pollutants BPA and Cr(VI) as well as the combined pollutant BPA-Cr(VI) could be removed effectively, with removal rates greater than 90%. However, when PFRs, BPA, H2O2, and Cr(VI) were present in the same solution, Cr(VI) competed with H2O2 for electrons and promoted the removal of BPA. The results of this study could be applied to sludge recycling and be used to develop approaches to catalytically degrade combined pollutants.

Humic acid (HA) was applied as the biosorbent for the adsorption and degradation of dyes in the presence of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis showed that the microstructure of the HA surface and the thermal stability was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Following irradiation, semiquinone EPFRs (g-factor > 2.0045) were generated on the HA surface. Both O2 and the addition of H2O2 were able to promote the generation of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals for the degradation of dye in aqueous solution. Furthermore, adsorption was observed to remove large amounts of the dyes, while the instantaneous free radical degradation process reduced the dyes to the lower concentration. In addition, a linear relationship was observed between the consumption of EPFRs and dye degradation rates. In ternary systems, HA conformed to Langmuir (476.19–1250.12 mg/L) and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. This work offers new insights into HA-EPFRs and their potential applications.

In the current study, a novel three-dimensional macroporous hydroxyapatite/ chitosan foam (HA/CS)-supported polymer micelle (PM/HA/CS) was developed, and its potential as an oral drug delivery system to enhance the solubility and oral bioavailability of poorly soluble compounds was systemically studied. Candesartan cilexetil (CC) was selected as a poorly soluble model drug. Firstly, HA/CS foam was synthesized using a wet chemical co-precipitation approach and poly-(methyl methacrylate) colloidal crystals as a macropore template. Subsequently, the CC-loaded polymer micelles were efficiently encapsulated into the macropores of the HA/CS foam and freeze-dried to produce powdery CC-loaded PM/HA/CS composites (CC-PM/HA/CS). The resulting CC-PM/HA/CS particles were then characterized in terms of porous structure, morphology, angle of repose, crystallinity, drug loading, dissolution profiles, and physical stability. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis confirmed that CC-PM/HA/CS was present in an amorphous form and has an excellent physical stability. Under both simulated gastric and intestinal conditions, the aqueous solubility and dissolution rate of the PM/HA/CS-based CC formulation were significantly increased compared with the pure drug powder. In addition, PM/HA/CS is almost completely non-cytotoxic. The PM/HA/CS-based CC formulation produced approximately 1.9-fold increased bioavailability when compared to the marketed tablets (Blopress®) administered to fasted Sprague-Dawley rats. On the whole, PM/HA/CS benefits from the advantages of three dimensional macroporous HA/CS foam and polymer micelles, and exhibits great potential as a drug delivery system for increasing the solubility and oral bioavailability of a poorly soluble compound, like CC.

It is important to identify efficient adsorbents for the removal of dyestuffs from aqueous solutions as this kind of pollution becomes more extensive. In this study, Dioscorea opposita Thunb. (DOT) was modified with polyethylene imine (DOT@PEI) as a novel biosorbent to remove the typical anionic dye indigo carmine (IC) from wastewater. The modified DOT@PEI biosorbent was characterized using BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) methods, and the results demonstrated that DOT@PEI is an excellent biosorbent. Batch adsorption studies showed that optimum adsorption parameters were pH 2.0, 1.0 g L−1 dosage, and temperature of 20 °C. The isothermal adsorption data showed good fitting to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capability of 344.83 mg g−1 for IC. Kinetic experiments showed that the experimental data fitted well to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption is a spontaneous exothermic process. Adsorption–desorption experiments illustrated the good regeneration capability of DOT@PEI. These results demonstrate that DOT@PEI can be used as an effective biosorbent in water for the removal of anionic dyes such as required for environmental applications.

In this article, a new type of carboxymethyl chitosan/phospholipid bilayer-capped mesoporous carbon nanomatrix (CCS/PL/MC) was fabricated as a potential nano-drug delivery system. In this drug delivery system, a mesoporous carbon nanomatrix (MC) acts as the support for loading drug molecules, a positively charged phospholipid (PL) layer works as the inner shell for prolonged drug release and a negatively charged carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) layer serves as the outer shell for pH-responsive drug release. Docetaxel (DTX) was selected as a model drug. The drug-loaded CCS/PL/MC was synthesized via a combination approach of double emulsion/solvent evaporation followed by lyophilization. The drug-loaded nanoparticles were characterized for their particle size, structure, morphology, zeta (ζ)-potential, specific surface area, porosity, drug loading and solid state. In vitro drug release tests showed that the drug-loaded CCS/PL/MC nanoparticles possess a good pH-sensitivity and prolonged releasing ability with negligible release in gastric media and controlled release in intestinal media. Compared with MC and PL-capped MC, CCS/PL/MC had a greater mucoadhesiveness. Moreover, cellular uptake study indicated that CCS/PL/MC might improve intracellular drug delivery. These results suggest that this hybrid nanocarrier, combining the beneficial features of CCS, PL and MC, is a promising drug delivery system able to improve the oral absorption of antitumor drugs.

Nitritation can be used as a pretreatment for anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox). Various control strategies for nitritation and half-nitritation of old landfill leachate in a membrane bioreactor were investigated in this study and the inhibition kinetics of substrate, product and old landfill leachate on nitritation were analyzed via batch tests. The results demonstrated that old landfill leachate nitritation in the membrane bioreactor can be achieved by adjusting the influent loading and dissolved oxygen (DO). From days 105–126 of the observation period, the average effluent concentration was 871.3 mg/L and the accumulation rate of NO 2 − − N was 97.2%. Half-nitritation was realized quickly by adjusting hydraulic retention time and DO. A low-DO control strategy appeared to best facilitate long-term and stable operation. Nitritation inhibition kinetic experiments showed that the inhibition of old landfill leachate was stronger than that of the substrate ( NH 4 + − N ) or product ( NO 2 − − N ) . The ammonia oxidation rate dropped by 22.2% when the concentration of old landfill leachate (calculated in chemical oxygen demand) was 1600.2 mg/L; further, when only free ammonia or free nitrous acid were used as a single inhibition factor, the ammonia oxidation rate dropped by 4.7–6.5% or 14.5–15.9%, respectively. Haldane, Aiba, and a revised inhibition kinetic model were adopted to separately fit the experimental data. The R 2 correlation coefficient values for these three models were 0.982, 0.996, and 0.992, respectively.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of carbon sources and chemical oxygen demand (COD)/NO2−-N ratios on the anammox–denitrification coupling process of the simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) biofilm. Also, the anammox activities of the SNAD biofilm were investigated under different temperature. Kaldnes rings taken from the SNAD biofilm reactor were operated in batch tests to determine the nitrogen removal rates. As a result, with the carbon source of sodium acetate, the appropriate COD/NO2−-N ratios for the anammox–denitrification coupling process were 1 and 2. With the COD/NO2−-N ratios of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the corresponding NO2−-N consumption via anammox was 87.1%, 52.2%, 29.3%, 23.7% and 16.3%, respectively. However, with the carbon source of sodium propionate and glucose, the anammox bacteria was found to perform higher nitrite competitive ability than denitrifiers at the COD/NO2−-N ratio of 5. Also, the SNAD biofilm could perform anammox activity at 15 °C with the nitrogen removal rate of 0.071 kg total inorganic nitrogen per kg volatile suspended solids per day. These results indicated that the SNAD biofilm process might be feasible for the treatment of municipal wastewater at normal temperature.

The skin of Iron stick yam (ISY) was modified with Polyethyleneimine (ISY@PEI) and evaluated for use as a potential biosorbent to remove the anionic dyes Sunset yellow (SY), Lemon yellow (LY), and Carmine (CM) from wastewater under low temperature conditions (5–15 °C) in single and ternary dye systems. Both in the single and ternary systems, experimental data showed that adsorption capacity reached the highest value at 5 °C, and adsorption capacity decreased when the temperature increased (10–50 °C). The equilibrium data fitted very well to the Langmuir model and the extended Langmuir isotherm, for the single and ternary systems, respectively. The maximum adsorption capability was 138.92, 476.31, and 500.13 mg/g for LY, SY, and CM, respectively, in a single system and 36.63, 303.31, and 294.12 mg/g for LY, SY, and CM, respectively, in a ternary system. The adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that it was a spontaneous and exothermic process.

A coupled system of membrane bioreactor-nitritation (MBR-nitritation) and up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (UASB-ANAMMOX) was employed to treat mature landfill leachate containing high ammonia nitrogen and low C/N. MBR-nitritation was successfully realized for undiluted mature landfill leachate with initial concentrations of 900-1500 mg/L [Formula: see text] and 2000-4000 mg/L chemical oxygen demand. The effluent [Formula: see text] concentration and the [Formula: see text] accumulation efficiency were 889 mg/L and 97% at 125 d, respectively. Half-nitritation was quickly realized by adjustment of hydraulic retention time and dissolved oxygen (DO), and a low DO control strategy could allow long-term stable operation. The UASB-ANAMMOX system showed high effective nitrogen removal at a low concentration of mature landfill leachate. The nitrogen removal efficiency was inhibited at excessive influent substrate concentration and the nitrogen removal efficiency of the system decreased as the concentration of mature landfill leachate increased. The MBR-nitritation and UASB-ANAMMOX processes were coupled for mature landfill leachate treatment and together resulted in high effective nitrogen removal. The effluent average total nitrogen concentration and removal efficiency values were 176 mg/L and 83%, respectively. However, the average nitrogen removal load decreased from 2.16 to 0.77 g/(L d) at higher concentrations of mature landfill leachate.
