Abstract The management of a food supply chain is difficult and complex because of the product's short shelf-life, time-sensitivity, and perishable nature which must be carefully considered to minimize food waste. Temperature-controlled perishable food supply chain provides the highly crucial facilities necessary to maintain the quality and safety of the product. The storage temperature is the most vital factor in maintaining both the quality and shelf-life of a perishable food. Adequate storage temperature control ensures that perishable foods are transported to the end-users in good quality and safe to consume. This paper presents perishable food storage temperature control through mathematical optimal control model where the storage temperature is regarded as the control variable and the deterioration of the perishable food’s quality follows the first-order reaction. The optimal storage temperature for a single perishable food is determined by applying the Pontryagin's maximum principle to solve the optimal control model problem. For multi-temperature commodities supply chain, an unsupervised machine learning (ML) method, called k-means clustering technique is used to determine the temperature clusters for a range of perishables. Based on descriptive analysis, it is observed that the k-means clustering technique is effective in identifying the best suitable storage temperature clusters for quality control of multi-commodity supply chain.

Sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (AFL) is a potential carbon source for biological denitrification. However, its effectiveness is limited due to the presence of nutrients and heavy metals. In this study, acid-modified sepiolite (MSEP) was used to extract short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) from AFL under optimized conditions and then with the prepared MSEP-AFL as a carbon source for denitrification. The optimal condition with an MSEP dosage of 1.96 g/L and pH 7.93 at 30 °C was obtained based on single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM). Carbon balance revealed that 96.2% of the SCFAs, including 43.7% acetate and 23.5% propionic acid, was retained in the MSEP, demonstrating its high selectivity. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal model, indicating dominant physical adsorption on the surface or in the fiber pores. This was further supported by the changes in the morphological features and surface properties of the MSEP. In the batch nitrate utilization experiments, the prepared MSEP-AFL was proven to be efficient as a carbon source, with a nitrate removal efficiency of 88.7% and a specific denitrification rate of 8.2 mg NOx-N/g VSS·h, which was 22% higher than that of the AFL. This was due to the establishment of a delicate “release–utilization” balance. These findings contribute to our understanding of the use of AFL for denitrification.

Anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge (WAS) towards biogas recovery is constrained by the limited hydrolysis and inhibited acetogenesis steps that hinder subsequent energy recovery. This study employed Fe(VI)/S(IV) oxidation to enhance the WAS solubilization and coupled it with the syntrophic interaction of hydrogen-producing acetogen (HPA) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to stimulate the successive procedure towards methane production. Results showed that the dosage ratio of HPA-SRB to WAS (H-S-W) with 1:1:50 outperformed with the highest methane production potential (11.63 ± 1.87 mL CH4/(g VSS·d). Meanwhile, the efficient and sequential process from acetogenesis to methanogenesis stimulated by HPA-SRB was evidenced by a significant decrease of 30.2% in the acetate concentration. The microbial community structure further manifested the crucial role of HPA-SRB with increased abundance of Desulfobulbus (2.07%), Syntrophomonas (1.24%) and Smithella (1.63%), which stimulated acetophilic methanogen boost with Methanobacterium dominating with 77.51% in H-S-W100. Furthermore, the positive syntrophic relationships among HPA-SRB and acetophilic methanogens towards methane production were confirmed via molecular ecological network and canonical correspondence analysis. This study highlighted the syntrophic cooperation of the mixed consortia of HPA and SRB on methane production based on Fe(VI)/S(IV) pretreatment and provided the theoretical and technical basis for the potential implementation of novel methanogenesis technology for WAS treatment.

The genetic structure and evolutionary relationship of Dulong chicken with other native Chinese species remained unclear. In this study, the mitochondrial control region was analyzed in total of 343 samples comprising 59 from Dulong chicken and 284 from 8 other Chinese local breeds revealed 51 mutation sites that defined 42 haplotypes. The maximum genetic variation was observed between the Shimian caoke and Pengxian yellow chickens. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these local chickens mainly scatter in two southwestern clades. Dulong chickens have close relationship with other native chicken. Finding of this study suggests a single matrilineal lineage of indigenous Dulong chickens.

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “The Impact of Aligning Business, IT, and Marketing Strategies on Firm Performance” [1]. In order to succeed in today's competitive business environment, a firm should have a clear business strategy that is supported by other organizational strategies. While prior studies argue that strategic alignment enhances firm performance, either strategic alignment including multiple factors or strategic orientation of firms has received little attention. This study, drawing on contingency theory and configuration theory, investigates the performance impact of triadic strategic alignment among business, IT, and marketing strategies while simultaneously considers strategic orientation of firms. A research model is tested through SEM and MANOVA using data collected in a questionnaire survey of 242 Yemen managers. The findings indicate that (1) triadic strategic alignment has a positive impact on firm performance and (2) there is an ideal triadic strategic alignment for prospectors and defenders. This research contributes to strategic alignment literature and managers' understanding of how to align business, IT and marketing strategies to improve firm performance. Over the last three decades, China’s agriculture sector has been transformed from the traditional to modern practice through the effective deployment of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Information processing and dissemination have played a critical role in this transformation process. Many studies in relation to agriculture information services have been conducted in China, but few of them have attempted to provide a comprehensive review and analysis of different information dissemination models and their applications. This paper aims to review and identify the ICT based information dissemination models in China and to share the knowledge and experience in applying emerging ICTs in disseminating agriculture information to farmers and farm communities to improve productivity and economic, social and environmental sustainability. The paper reviews and analyzes the development stages of China’s agricultural information dissemination systems and different mechanisms for agricultural information service development and operations. Seven ICT-based information dissemination models are identified and discussed. Success cases are presented. The findings provide a useful direction for researchers and practitioners in developing future ICT based information dissemination systems. It is hoped that this paper will also help other developing countries to learn from China’s experience and best practice in their endeavor of applying emerging ICTs in agriculture information dissemination and knowledge transfer.

Maximizing the internal carbon sources in raw wastewater was found to be an alternative option to alleviate the financial burden in external carbon sources (ECS) addition to the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. Based on previous studies on particulate recovery via fine-sieving technologies, alkali pretreatment was used to improve the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from the fine-sieving fractions (FSF). Hydrolysis performance and methane production were monitored to evaluate the reasons for the SCFA boost. Besides, the microbial community structure was evaluated by high-throughput sequencing. Furthermore, mass balance and financial benefits were preliminarily estimated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment effectively promoted the generation of SCFAs with 234 mg/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), almost double that of the control test. This was partially attributed to the efficient hydrolysis, with soluble polysaccharides and protein increased by 2.1 and 1.2 times compared to that of the control, respectively. Inhibition of methanogens was also devoted to the accumulation of SCFAs, with no methane production until 150 h at high pH value. Finally, a preliminary evaluation revealed that 44.51 kg/d SCFAs could be supplied as the electron donor for denitrification, significantly reducing the cost in ECS addition for most wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with carbon insufficiency.
