Abstract Younger premenopausal women are more prone to developing ovarian metastases (OM) of gastric cancer (GC) than metastases of other organs; however, the molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here we perform single-cell RNA sequencing on 45 tumor samples from 18 GC patients with OM. Interestingly, fibroblasts in OM of GC express high levels of estrogen receptor (ER) and midkine (MDK), interacting with tumor cells through activating ER-MDK-LRP1 (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1) signaling axis. Functional experiments demonstrate that estrogen stimulation induces MDK secretion by ovarian fibroblasts, and binding of MDK to LRP1 increases GC cell migration and invasion. Furthermore, in vivo, estrogen stimulation remarkably augments ovarian engraftment and metastasis of LRP1+ GC cells. Collectively, our findings reveal that ER+ ovarian fibroblasts secrete MDK under estrogen influence, driving OM of GC via the MDK-LRP1 axis. Our study holds the potential to catalyze innovative therapeutic strategies aimed at intercepting and managing OM in GC.

Abstract Background After radical surgery, early detection of recurrence and metastasis is a crucial factor in enhancing the prognosis and survival of patients with gastric cancer (GC). Therefore, assessing the risk of recurrence in gastric cancer patients and determining the timing for postoperative recurrence is crucial. Methods The clinicopathological data of 521 patients with recurrent gastric cancer, who underwent radical gastrectomy at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital between January 2010 and January 2017, were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were randomly divided into two groups: a training group (n = 365) and a validation group (n = 156). In the training set, patients were further categorized into early recurrence (n = 263) and late recurrence (n = 102) groups based on a 2-year boundary. Comparative analyses of clinicopathological features and prognoses were conducted between these two groups. Subsequently, a nomogram for predicting early recurrence was developed and validated. Results In this study, the developed nomogram incorporated age, serous infiltration, lymph node metastasis, recurrence mode, and the tumour marker CA19-9. In the training cohort, the area under the curve (AUC value) was 0.739 (95% CI, 0.682–0.798), with a corresponding C-index of 0.739. This nomogram was subsequently validated in an independent validation cohort, yielding an AUC of 0.743 (95% CI, 0.652–0.833) and a C-index of 0.743. Furthermore, independent risk factors for prognosis were identified, including age, absence of postoperative chemotherapy, early recurrence, lymph node metastasis, abdominal metastasis, and vascular cancer embolus. Conclusion Independent risk factors for gastric cancer recurrence following radical surgery were utilized to construct a nomogram for predicting early relapse. This nomogram effectively assesses the risk of recurrence, aids in treatment decision-making and follow-up planning in clinical settings, and demonstrated strong performance in the validation cohort.

Ocean hydrogen energy, as a clean, low-carbon, efficient, and renewable energy, is gradually becoming an important energy carrier for China to achieve its "dual-carbon" goals, and its development has significant strategic significance for the country. However, due to the late start of ocean hydrogen energy, there are currently many difficulties such as low technological maturity, insufficient policy support, and incomplete legal support. There exist challenges in the realm of marine jurisdictional disputes, marine environmental pollution, marine biodiversity destruction, and difficulties in international cooperation for development. Regarding the legal regulation of marine hydrogen energy development, at the international law level, a basic legal framework for international cooperation in marine hydrogen energy development and marine environmental protection can be constructed based on fundamental laws such as the UN Charter and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and further legal norms on marine environmental pollution and the protection of marine biodiversity can be proposed based on the Convention on Biological Diversity and the "BBNJ Agreement". At the domestic law level, it is apparent from existing energy-related legal regulations that the Renewable Energy Law fills the legal vacuum for marine hydrogen energy development. In the field of marine environmental protection, Chinese laws and regulations require environmental impact assessments for marine hydrogen energy development to ensure that the marine ecological environment is not harmed. In summary, the utilization of marine hydrogen energy should perfect relevant domestic legislation, establish a targeted environmental impact assessment system for marine hydrogen energy development, and promote international development and cooperation. These proposed improvements aim to provide clear legal guidance for marine hydrogen energy development, promote its sustainable development and utilization, while also protecting the marine environment and social stability.

Wetlands, as one of the three major natural ecosystems on earth, play a crucial role in conserving water sources, protecting the environment, addressing climate change, and preserving biodiversity. To accelerate the development of an ecological civilization and enhance the protection and development of wetlands, China has introduced the "People′s Republic of China Wetland Protection Law," marking the start of a new legal journey in wetland conservation. Considering the current status of domestic wetland protection legislation, this law has shortcomings in areas such as wetland ecological compensation systems, wetland development permitting systems, and social public participation systems, making it difficult to effectively achieve sustainable protection and utilization of wetlands in practice. This paper, by introducing wetland protection legislation and policies from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, briefly analyzes the specific institutional provisions related to wetlands in these countries. It aims to provide beneficial references for China′s wetland protection, thereby improving China′s relevant legal systems for wetland conservation and providing a strong legal basis for wetland protection efforts in China.

As one of the deadliest cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, there has been limited improvement in long-term survival rates for gastric cancer (GC) in recent decades. The poor prognosis is attributed to difficulties in early detection, minimal opportunity for radical resection and resistance to chemotherapy and radiation. Macrophages are among the most abundant infiltrating immune cells in the GC stroma. These cells engage in crosstalk with cancer cells, adipocytes and other stromal cells to regulate metabolic, inflammatory and immune status, generating an immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment (TME) and ultimately promoting tumour initiation and progression. In this review, we summarise recent advances in our understanding of the origin of macrophages and their types and polarisation in cancer and provide an overview of the role of macrophages in GC carcinogenesis and development and their interaction with the GC immune microenvironment and flora. In addition, we explore the role of macrophages in preclinical and clinical trials on drug resistance and in treatment of GC to assess their potential therapeutic value in this disease.

Abstract Background It has been reported that inflammatory and nutritional markers are related to prognosis in numerous malignancies. The present study analyzed the significance of these markers’ alterations during neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the long-term outcomes in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Methods A retrospective review was performed of 437 advanced gastric cancer patients who underwent a neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) regimen followed by surgical treatment. Inflammatory and nutritional markers measured from the blood samples collected from the patients before the first neoadjuvant chemotherapy and after the last neoadjuvant chemotherapy were used for analysis. Statistical analysis, including Mann-Whitney U or chi-square tests, the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox multivariate analysis, were performed to analyze the predictive value of these markers for overall survival outcomes (OS). Abstract Background Lymph node metastases often occur in advanced gastric cancer, with some patients presenting with metastases in the para-aortic lymph nodes. There are persistent Controversies about the benefit of para-aortic lymph node dissection (PAND). Our purpose is to probe whether PAND following preoperative chemotherapy had any clinical significance in individuals with PALNs in gastric cancer. Material and methods To retrospectively analyze the clinical data of 86 gastric cancer patients (40 in the D2 + PAND group and 46 in the D2 group) who attended the abdominal surgery department of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital between September 1, 2008, and July 30, 2018. Results In the D2 + PAND group (40 cases), the average number of lymph nodes cleared per case was 4.3 in group 16 (16a2, 16b1), and the postoperative pathology confirmed lymph node positivity in 16 cases, with a metastasis rate of 40%. The median overall survival times were 63 and 34 months for the patients in the D2 + PAND group and D2 group, respectively. The 3-year overall survival (OS) compared to the D2 group (D2 + PAND 69.1% vs. D2 50%, P = 0.012) and a statistically significant difference in 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) (D2 + PAND 69.6% vs. D2 38.3%, P = 0.007). Lymph node dissection extent and recurrence of para-aortic lymph nodes were independent prognostic variables for the patients. The recurrence rate was reduced in the D2 + PAND group compared to the D2 group (D2 + PAND 7.5% vs. D2 26.1%, p = 0.023). Conclusions For patients with gastric cancer whose imaging suggests metastasis in the para-aortic lymph nodes, preoperative chemotherapy combined with PAND is an effective and safe treatment that may benefit patient survival.

BackgroundFocal adhesion serves as a bridge between tumour cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) and has multiple roles in tumour invasion, migration, and therapeutic resistance. However, studies on focal adhesion-related genes (FARGs) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are limited.MethodsData on HNSCC samples were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and GSE41613 datasets, and 199 FARGs were obtained from the Molecular Signatures database. The integrated datasets’ dimensions were reduced by the use of cluster analysis, which was also used to classify patients with HNSCC into subclusters. A FARG signature model was developed and utilized to calculate each patient’s risk score using least extreme shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis. The risk score was done to quantify the subgroups of all patients. We evaluated the model’s value for prognostic prediction, immune infiltration status, and therapeutic response in HNSCC. Preliminary molecular and biological experiments were performed to verify these results.ResultsTwo different HNSCC molecular subtypes were identified according to FARGs, and patients with C2 had a shorter overall survival (OS) than those with C1. We constructed an FARG signature comprising nine genes. We constructed a FARG signature consisting of nine genes. Patients with higher risk scores calculated from the FARG signature had a lower OS, and the FARG signature was considered an independent prognostic factor for HNSCC in univariate and multivariate analyses. FARGs are associated with immune cell invasion, gene mutation status, and chemosensitivity. Finally, we observed an abnormal overexpression of MAPK9 in HNSCC tissues, and MAPK9 knockdown greatly impeded the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HNSCC cells.ConclusionThe FARG signature can provide reliable prognostic prediction for patients with HNSCC. Apart from that, the genes in this model were related to immune invasion, gene mutation status, and chemosensitivity, which may provide new ideas for targeted therapies for HNSCC.

Abstract Since 2008, the development of China's smarter cities has experienced four phases: Exploration and practice phase, normative adjustment phase, strategic breakthrough phase and all‐round development phase. A number of innovative practices such as the city brain and ‘unified online government service’ have provided the world with Chinese solutions for smart city construction. This study explains the concept and connotation of innovative smarter cities, summarizes the development status of China's innovative smarter cities, analyses and judges the seven development trends in the construction of innovative smarter cities, analyses the shortcomings and deficiencies, and puts forward policy suggestions to promote the development. It has an important reference value for comprehensively understanding the development concept and overall development status of China's innovative smarter cities and clarifying the next development direction.

Abstract Background Survival benefit of adjuvant radiotherapy for locally advanced gastric cancer following gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy has always been controversial. Esophagogastric junction (EGJ) adenocarcinoma, which is usually classified as gastric cancer in East Asia, often has a higher locoregional recurrence rate after operation because of its special anatomical characteristics. The aim of this study is to determine whether adjuvant radiotherapy can improve survival of locally advanced EGJ adenocarcinoma after D2 radical resection. Methods In this phase III, randomized, open label, controlled trial, we plan to recruit 378 patients with Siewert type II and III adenocarcinoma of EGJ, who had undergone transabdominal radical surgery and D2 lymphadenectomy, and were divided into pathological stage IIB to IIIC. All patients will be randomized 1:1 to receive either adjuvant chemotherapy alone (control group) or adjuvant chemotherapy plus chemoradiotherapy (experimental group). Patients allocated to control group will receive eight cycles of S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX), while the experimental group will receive two cycles of SOX followed by 45-Gy RT combined with S-1 and four additional cycles of SOX. The primary endpoint is 3-year disease-free survival rate (DFS). The secondary endpoints are 3-year overall survival rate (OS), 3-year locoregional recurrence-free survival rate (LRFS), 3-year distant metastasis-free survival rate (DMFS), and quality of life (QoL). Discussion In the past, the adjuvant treatment of EGJ adenocarcinoma needs to draw on the experience of esophageal adenocarcinoma or gastric adenocarcinoma. In this study, EGJ adenocarcinoma is considered as an independent disease, and the conclusion will provide evidence for optimal adjuvant therapy of locally advanced EGJ adenocarcinoma after D2 radical resection. Streptococcus is widely found in nature and the human body, and most species are not pathogenic. In recent years, studies have found that Streptococcus is associated with gastric cancer. Streptococcus was found to be enriched in the oral cavity, stomach and intestine of gastric cancer patients and found to be increased in gastric cancer tissues, suggesting that Streptococcus may be the pathogenic bacteria underlying gastric cancer. This review discusses the discovery of Streptococcus, the relationship between Streptococcus and gastric cancer, and the possible carcinogenic mechanism of Streptococcus and summarizes the progress of the research on the role of Streptococcus in gastric cancer to provide new ideas for the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer.

Oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) in Porites coral skeletons at the micrometer scale has been proposed to be uninfluenced by temperature in previous studies. Considering that temperature is the main controlling factor of coral δ18O at the macro scale, the effect of temperature on the δ18O variations at the micrometer scale should be evaluated carefully. To better understand the climatic and biological significance of high-resolution δ18O in coral skeletons, in situ δ18O values were analyzed in three modern Porites corals from the South China Sea and the Great Barrier Reef by a Cameca IMS 1280-HR secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). A twice vacuum impregnation procedure for sample mount preparation and a subsection calibration method based on multiple controlling points for coral matrix effect correction were used for SIMS analysis. The derived SIMS coral δ18O time series exhibit consistent long-term variations with the monthly δ18O (measured by conventional gas isotope ratios mass spectrometry), monthly Sr/Ca, and daily sea surface temperature, first highlighting the dominant temperature control on micrometer-scale coral δ18O. The 1.5‰ fluctuation amplitude of SIMS coral δ18O at the scales of 400–800 μm can be explained by the combined SST effects of ~10-day variation and day–night fluctuation, whereas the effects of seawater δ18O and growth rate on SIMS coral δ18O seem not dominant. Some abnormally negative δ18O values possibly resulted from the primary ion bombardment on indistinguishable centers of calcification.

Abstract Background There is no currently available treatment for peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer. This phase II study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) combined with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for the treatment of these patients. Methods Neoadjuvant chemotherapy comprised two cycles of HIPEC and four cycles of S-1 plus paclitaxel. HIPEC was administered intraperitoneally with paclitaxel (75 mg/m2). For systemic chemotherapy, paclitaxel was administered intravenously(150 mg/m2) on day 1, and S-1 was administered orally(80 mg/m2/day)on days 1–14 of a 3-week cycle. Another two cycles of HIPEC and four cycles of S-1 plus paclitaxel were administered after second diagnostic staging laparoscopy or CRS. The primary endpoints were treatment efficiency and safety; the secondary endpoint was 3-year overall survival (OS). Results A total of 40 patients were enrolled and 38 patients have been analyzed. Of these, 18 (47.4%) patients received neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy, HIPEC and CRS (conversion therapy group), while 20 patients received only chemotherapy and HIPEC (palliative chemotherapy group). Median OS was markedly improved in the conversion therapy group (21.1 months, 95% confidence interval [CI] 16.7–25.6 months) in comparison with the palliative chemotherapy group(10.8 months, 95%CI 7.3–14.2 months, p = 0.002). It is very difficult to directly spin the lignocellulose without pretreatment. Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising solvent to dissolve lignocellulose to prepare cellulose fiber. However, the degree of cellulose polymerization（DP）is reduced when lignocellulose is dissolved in ILs, and the lignin removal rate is low. The elongation at break and tensile strength of the fibers obtained by spinning the lignocellulose dissolved in ILs are poor. In this paper, preparing cellulose fiber directly from lignocellulose based on dissolving corn stalk via [C4mim]Cl-L-arginine binary system is achieved. It shows that the removal rate of lignin can reach 92.35% and the purity of cellulose can reach 85.32% after corn stalk was dissolved at 150 °C for 11.5 h when the mass fraction of arginine is 2.5%. The elongation at break of fiber reached 10.12% and the tensile strength reached 420 MPa. It is mainly due to the fact that L-arginine not only inhibits the degradation of cellulose but also promotes the delignination. Without any pulping or pretreatment, preparing cellulose fibers via direct dissolution and extrusion may provide a simple and effective way to prepare many novel cellulose materials.

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine tumor, and the rate of early lymph node metastasis may be as high as 60%. Currently, detection of lymph node metastasis of thyroid cancer during surgery is limited and time-consuming. Elevated levels of Cyfra 21-1, the proteolytic portion of cytokeratin, are associated with the metastasis and progression of thyroid cancer and are an effective biomarker for the prognosis and diagnosis of thyroid cancer. In this study, an immunochromatographic strip test based on colloidal gold nanoparticles was developed to semi-quantitatively detect the levels of Cyfra 21-1 in lymph nodes within 15 min. The standard (calibration) curve equation was Y = 0.003708 × X + 0.1101, and the detection limit was 0.55–1.14 ng mL−1. The strip did not detect other protein markers of epithelial cells at a concentration of 500 ng mL−1, including cytokeratin 8, cytokeratin 18, epithelial membrane antigen, and epidermal surface antigen. The ability of the strip to differentiate positive from negative metastasis in 40 lymph node specimens was 100% concordant with that of immunohistochemical staining for Cyfra 21-1. In an assessment of 20 lymph node specimens that had been determined by postoperative histopathology to be positive for lymph node metastasis and 20 specimens that were negative, the sensitivity and specificity of the strip were 100% and 95%, respectively. The sensitivity of the strip remained stable when stored at room temperature for 6 months. Together, these results indicated that although further testing using a larger sample size will be required, this immunochromatographic strip test may be useful for rapid intraoperative detection of thyroid cancer metastasis to lymph nodes.

Heterogeneously catalyzed decarboxylation of L-lysine is a green and promising way to produce cadaverine. Here, cadaverine was firstly synthesized by using the supported nano-sized ruthenium oxide (RuOx) catalysts. Under the optimized conditions, RuOx/BaSO4 possesses an excellent catalytic performance with L-lysine conversion of 99% and cadaverine selectivity up to 62%, which has a great industrial potential.

In order to investigate the essence of sticking for drill rod served in underground coal mine, a comprehensive solution combing finite element analysis with fuzzy proportion–integration–differentiation on the drilling rig is proposed. First, the structure and working mechanism of the drilling rig are studied; then, the static and modal analyses on the drill rod with finite element analysis are performed according to the actual working conditions of the drilling rig. Furthermore, a load-sensing hydraulic power system of the drilling rig is built, and the co-simulation with AMESim and Simulink is performed on the response, overshoot, and vibration, when the hydraulic power is controlled with the conventional control method, proportion–integration–differentiation control method, and fuzzy proportion–integration–differentiation method, respectively. The simulation results show that the strength, stiffness, and vibration frequency of the drilling rig model meet the working requirements, and no resonance occurs; furthermore, the load-sensing hydraulic power system with fuzzy proportion–integration–differentiation method is preferable than the other two control methods.

As the aging of the population becomes more severe, wheelchair-mounted robotic arms (WMRAs) are gaining an increased amount of attention. Laser pointer interactions are an attractive method enabling humans to unambiguously point out objects and pick them up. In addition, they bring about a greater sense of participation in the interaction process as an intuitive interaction mode. However, the issue of human–robot interactions remains to be properly tackled, and traditional laser point interactions still suffer from poor real-time performance and low accuracy amid dynamic backgrounds. In this study, combined with an advanced laser point detection method and an improved pose estimation algorithm, a laser pointer is used to facilitate the interactions between humans and a WMRA in an indoor environment. Assistive grasping using a laser selection consists of two key steps. In the first step, the images captured using an RGB-D camera are pre-processed, and then fed to a convolutional neural network (CNN) to determine the 2D coordinates of the laser point and objects within the image. Meanwhile, the centroid coordinates of the selected object are also obtained using the depth information. In this way, the object to be picked up and its location are determined. The experimental results show that the laser point can be detected with almost 100% accuracy in a complex environment. In the second step, a compound pose-estimation algorithm aiming at a sparse use of multi-view templates is applied, which consists of both coarse- and precise-matching of the target to the template objects, greatly improving the grasping performance. The proposed algorithms were implemented on a Kinova Jaco robotic arm, and the experimental results demonstrate their effectiveness. Compared with commonly accepted methods, the time consumption of the pose generation can be reduced from 5.36 to 4.43 s, and synchronously, the pose estimation error is significantly improved from 21.31% to 3.91%.
