Search

Many experiments operating at millikelvin temperatures with signal frequencies in the microwave regime are beginning to incorporate Josephson Parametric Amplifiers (JPA) as their first amplification stage. While there are implementations for a wideband frequency response with a minimal need for tuning, designs using resonant structures with small numbers of Josephson elements still achieve the best noise performance. In a typical measurement scheme involving a JPA, one needs to control the resonance frequency, pump frequency and pump power to achieve the desired amplification and noise properties. In this work, we propose a straightforward approach for operating JPAs with the help of a look-up table (LUT) and online fine-tuning. Using the proposed approach, we demonstrate the operation of a flux-driven JPA with 20 dB gain around 5.9 GHz, covering approximately 100 MHz with 20 kHz tuning steps. The axion search experiments based on haloscopes at the Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research (CAPP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in South Korea are performed in the frequency range from 1 GHz to 6 GHz. In order to perform the experiments in a strong magnetic field of 12 T and a large-volume cavity of close to 40 liters, we use He wet dilution refrigerators with immersed superconducting magnets. The measurements require continuous operation for months without interruptions for microwave component replacements. This is achieved by using different cryogenic engineering approaches including microwave RF-switching. The critical components, defining the scanning rate and the sensitivity of the setup, are the Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPA) and cryogenic low noise amplifiers (cLNA) based on high-electron-mobility-transistor (HEMT) technology. It is desirable for both devices to have a wide frequency range and low noise close to the quantum limit for the JPA. In this paper, we show a recent design of a 4-channel measurement setup for JPA and HEMT measurements. The setup is based on a 4-channel wideband noise source (NS) and is used for both JPA and HEMT gain and noise measurements. The setup is placed at 20 mK inside the dry dilution refrigerator. The NS is thermally decoupled from the environment using plastic spacers, superconducting wires and superconducting coaxial cables. The axion is a highly motivated elementary particle which could address two fundamental questions in physics - the strong CP problem and the dark matter mystery. Experimental searches for this hypothetical particle have started to reach theoretically interesting sensitivity levels, particularly in the $\mu$eV (GHz) region. They rely on large volume solenoid magnetic fields and microwave resonators with signals read out by quantum noise limited amplifiers. Concurrently, there have been intensive experimental efforts to widen the search range by devising various techniques as well as to enhance sensitivities by implementing advanced technologies. The developments and improvements in these orthogonal approaches will enable us to explore most of the parameter space of the axion and axion-like particles within the next couple of decades, with the 1-25 GHz frequency range to be conquered well within the first decade. We describe a new axion search method based on measuring the variance in the interference of the axion signal using injected photons with a power detector. The need for a linear amplifier is eliminated by putting a strong signal into the microwave cavity, to acquire not only the power excess but also measure the variance of the output power. The interference of the external photons with the axion to photon converted signal greatly enhances the variance at the particular axion frequency, providing evidence of its existence. This method has an advantage in that it can always obtain sensitivity near the quantum noise limit even for a power detector with high dark count rate. et al., We present results of the Relic Axion Dark-Matter Exploratory Setup (RADES), a detector which is part of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), searching for axion dark matter in the 34.67 μeV mass range. A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of gaγ ≳ 4 × 10−13 GeV−1 over a mass range of 34.6738 μeV < ma < 34.6771 μeV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 μeV. Nambu-Goldstone bosons, or axions, may be ubiquitous. Some of the axions may have small masses and thus serve as mediators of long-range forces. In this paper, we study the force mediated by an extremely light axion, $\phi$, between the visible sector and the dark sector, where dark matter lives. Since nature does not preserve the CP symmetry, the coupling between dark matter and $\phi$ is generically CP-violating. In this case, the induced force is extremely long-range and behaves as an effective magnetic field. If the force acts on electrons or nucleons, the spins of them on Earth precess around a fixed direction towards the galactic center. This provides an experimental opportunity for $\phi$ with mass, $m_\phi$, and decay constant, $f_\phi$, satisfying $m_\phi\lesssim 10^{-25}\,$ eV, $f_\phi\lesssim 10^{14}\,$GeV if the daily modulation of the effective magnetic field signals in magnetometers is measured by using the coherent averaging method. The effective magnetic field induced by an axionic compact object, such as an axion domain wall, is also discussed., Comment: 30pages, 8figures

Results are reported from the first full-scale search for transient signals from exotic fields of astrophysical origin using data from a newly constructed Earth-scale detector: the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME). Data collected by the GNOME consist of correlated measurements from optical atomic magnetometers located in laboratories all over the world. GNOME data are searched for patterns of signals propagating through the network consistent with exotic fields composed of ultralight bosons such as axion-like particles (ALPs). Analysis of data from a continuous month-long operation of the GNOME finds no statistically significant signals consistent with those expected due to encounters with topological defects (axion domain walls), placing new experimental constraints on such dark matter scenarios.

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. Recently an induction heating system comprising a pair of no-insulation high-temperature superconductor (HTS) racetrack coils was built and now it is commercially available. It generates a direct current (dc) magnetic field in which a conductive metallic billet rotates at a high speed. Most dc induction machines accommodate a “single” billet per operation. This paper proposes an alternative concept of a “multiple-billet” induction heater, where the multiple billets can be simultaneously heated. The system consists of eight pairs of HTS racetrack coils that are placed in a circular pattern. An arbitrary number of billets may be placed and rotate at the same time in the space between racetrack coil pairs. The main goal in this paper is to theoretically demonstrate the principle of operation of the new multibillet system. The paper presents: first, overall system configuration and the principle of operation; second, electromagnetic design of the eight-pole HTS magnet; third, analyses with key operation parameters to estimate the multibillet heater performance. Due to the “positive” mutual inductance among neighbor racetrack coils, the multibillet system is estimated to deliver a larger heating power per billet than that of its single-billet counterpart for given operating conditions. Also, due to the eddy-currents induced in each billet, the power per billet reduces when the number of billets increases beyond an optimal value.

This paper presents the design and test results of the pancake coils for the 25 T, 100 mm bore solenoid that Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is building for the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Korea for an Axion dark matter search. The design is based on second-generation (2G) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape with no-insulation winding. The major challenges in the high-field, large aperture solenoid are the large stresses and the quench protection. Moreover, the design should be robust for reliable operation in a user facility environment. The paper will also present the construction and test results of two ~100 mm bore double pancake coils creating a peak field of up to ~17 T and similar hoop stresses as will be in the 25 T solenoid. The coils were subject to several severe tests, including the simulations of large defects and extended quench studies at ~4 K. The most striking part of these studies was the demonstration of how fast (a few hundred milliseconds) these coils can turn from the superconducting state to the normal state (quench or thermal runaway). This removes the past concerns of protecting high-field HTS coils because of the low quench propagation velocities.

Dark matter (DM) comes from long-range gravitational observations, and it is considered as something that does not interact with ordinary matter or emits light. However, also on much smaller scales, a number of unexpected observations of the solar activity and the dynamic Earth atmosphere might arise from DM contradicting the aforementioned DM picture. Because, gravitational (self) focusing effects by the Sun or its planets of streaming DM fit as the interpretation of the otherwise puzzling 11-year solar cycle, the mysterious heating of the solar corona, atmospheric transients, etc. Observationally driven, an external impact by overlooked streaming invisible matter reconciles the investigated mysterious behavior showing otherwise unexpected planetary relationships; this is a signature for gravitational focusing of streaming DM by the solar system bodies. The Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research at the Institute for Basic Science is searching for axion dark matter using ultralow temperature microwave resonators. We report the exclusion of the axion mass range 10.7126–10.7186 μeV with near Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (KSVZ) coupling sensitivity and the range 10.16–11.37 μeV with about 9 times larger coupling at 90% confidence level. This is the first axion search result in these ranges. It is also the first with a resonator physical temperature of less than 40 mK.

The cavity haloscope provides a highly sensitive method to search for dark matter axions in the microwave regime. Experimental attempts to enhance the sensitivity have focused on improving major aspects, such as producing strong magnetic fields, increasing cavity quality factors, and achieving lowest possible noise temperatures. Minor details, however, also need to be carefully considered in realistic experimental designs. They are associated with non-uniform magnetic fields over the detection volume, noise propagation under attenuation and temperature gradients, and thermal disequilibrium in the cavity system. Ultralight bosons such as axion-like particles are viable candidates for dark matter. They can form stable, macroscopic field configurations in the form of topological defects that could concentrate the dark matter density into many distinct, compact spatial regions that are small compared with the Galaxy but much larger than the Earth. Here we report the results of the search for transient signals from the domain walls of axion-like particles by using the global network of optical magnetometers for exotic (GNOME) physics searches. We search the data, consisting of correlated measurements from optical atomic magnetometers located in laboratories all over the world, for patterns of signals propagating through the network consistent with domain walls. The analysis of these data from a continuous month-long operation of GNOME finds no statistically significant signals, thus placing experimental constraints on such dark matter scenarios., A search for transient dark matter in the form of domain walls of axion-like particles finds no statistically significant signal. This places constraints on our theoretical understanding of such scenarios.

The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) conducts an experimental search for certain forms of dark matter based on their spatiotemporal signatures imprinted on a global array of synchronized atomic magnetometers. The experiment described here looks for a gradient coupling of axion-like particles (ALPs) with proton spins as a signature of locally dense dark matter objects such as domain walls. In this work, stochastic optimization with machine learning is proposed for use in a search for ALP domain walls based on GNOME data. The validity and reliability of this method were verified using binary classification. The projected sensitivity of this new analysis method for ALP domain-wall crossing events is presented.

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. The experimental non-observation of charge-parity (CP) symmetry violation in quantum chromodynamics is commonly referred to as the strong CP problem. The axion, a hypothetical elementary pseudoscalar, is expected to solve the strong CP problem and is also a promising candidate for dark matter. The most sensitive axion search experiments operate at millikelvin temperatures and hence rely on instrumentation that carries signals from a system at cryogenic temperatures to room temperature instrumentation. One of the biggest limiting factors affecting the parameter scanning speed of these detectors is the noise added by the components in the signal detection chain. Since the first amplifier in the chain limits the minimum noise, low-noise amplification is of paramount importance. This paper reports on the operation of a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) operating at around 2.3 GHz with added noise approaching the quantum limit. The JPA was employed as a first stage amplifier in an experimental setting similar to the ones used in haloscope axion detectors. By operating the JPA at a gain of 19 dB and cascading it with two cryogenic amplifiers operating at 4 K, noise temperatures as low as 120 mK were achieved for the whole signal detection chain.

The axion was first introduced as a consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to solve the CP problem in strong interactions of particle physics and is a well motivated cold dark matter candidate. This particle is expected to interact extremely weakly with matter and its mass is expected to lie in $\mu$eV range with the corresponding frequency roughly in GHz range. In 1983 P. Sikivie proposed a detection scheme, so called axion haloscope, where axions resonantly convert to photons in a tunable microwave cavity permeated by a strong magnetic field. A major source of the experimental noise is attributed to added noise by RF amplifiers, and thus precise understandings of amplifiers' noise is of importance. We present the first results of a search for invisible axion dark matter using a multiple-cell cavity haloscope. This cavity concept was proposed to provide a highly efficient approach to high mass regions compared to the conventional multiple-cavity design, with larger detection volume, simpler detector setup, and unique phase-matching mechanism. Searches with a double-cell cavity superseded previous reports for the axion-photon coupling over the mass range between 13.0 and 13.9$\,\mu$eV. This result not only demonstrates the novelty of the cavity concept for high-mass axion searches, but also suggests it can make considerable contributions to the next-generation experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The axion is a hypothetical particle proposed to solve the strong $CP$ problem, and also a candidate for dark matter. This non-relativistic particle in the galactic halo can be converted into a photon under a strong magnetic field and detected with a microwave resonant cavity. Relying on this detection method, many experiments have excluded some mass regions with certain sensitivities in terms of axion-photon coupling ($g_{a\gamma\gamma}$) for decades, but no axion dark matter has been discovered to date. CAPP-8TB is an axion haloscope experiment at IBS/CAPP designed to search for the axion in a mass range of 6.62 to 7.04 $\mu$eV. The experiment aims for the most sensitive axion dark matter search in this particular mass range with its first-phase sensitivity reaching the QCD axion band. In this presentation, we discuss the overview of the experiment, and present the first result. We also discuss an upgrade of the experiment to achieve higher sensitivity.

An axion dark matter search with the CAPP-8TB haloscope is reported. Our results are sensitive to axion-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ down to the QCD axion band over the axion mass range between 6.62 and 6.82 $\mu$eV at a 90\% confidence level, which is the most sensitive result in the mass range to date., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures

The cavity haloscope has been employed to detect microwave photons resonantly converted from invisible cosmic axions under a strong magnetic field. In this scheme, the axion-photon conversion power has been formulated to be valid for certain conditions, either $Q_{cavity}\ll Q_{\rm axion}$ or $Q_{cavity} \gg Q_{axion}$. This remedy, however, fails when these two quantities are comparable to each other. Furthermore, the noise power flow has been treated independently of the impedance mismatch of the system, which could give rise to misleading estimates of the experimental sensitivity. We revisit the analytical approaches to derive a general description of the signal and noise power. Haloscope axion dark matter search experiments typically consider arrays of multiple cavities to increase the detection volume in exploring high mass regions. We, IBS/CAPP at KAIST, introduce a new concept, multiple-cell cavity, which is superior to conventional multiple-cavity design in terms of detection volume, simplicity of the experimental setup, and facilitation of the phase-matching mechanism. This idea is promising for detecting high frequency axion dark matter with enhanced experimental sensitivities. We present the characteristics of this design and demonstrate the experimental feasibility using a double-cell cavity.

One of the most significant and practical figures of merit in axion haloscope searches is the scanning rate, because of the unknown axion mass. Under the best experimental parameters, the only way to improve the figure of merit is to increase the experimentally designed signal to noise ratio in the axion haloscope search analysis procedure. In this paper, we report an improved axion haloscope search analysis using the data taken by the CAPP-8TB haloscope. By correcting for the background biased by the background parametrizations in the presence of axion signals, we realized a signal to noise ratio efficiency of about 100\%. Given the axion haloscope search analyses to date, the scanning rate can be improved by 21\%, with about a 10\% improvement in the signal to noise ratio. CAPP-PACE is a pilot experiment of IBS/CAPP for direct detection of axions with a mass around 10 μeV based on Sikivie’s microwave cavity scheme. The detector is equipped with an 8 T superconducting magnet and employs a dilution refrigerator that lowers the physical temperature of a high Q-factor split-type cavity to less than 45 mK. The frequency tuning system utilizes piezoelectric actuators with interchangeable sapphire and copper rods. The feeble signal ( 10−24 W) from the cavity is amplified and transmitted through the RF receiver chain with a HEMT amplifier whose noise temperature is around 1 K. I will present the results of CAPP’s first physics data runs in the axion mass range from 2.45 to 2.75 GHz and discuss our future plans and R&D projects.

We show that proton storage ring experiments designed to search for proton electric dipole moments can also be used to look for the nearly dc spin precession induced by dark energy and ultra-light dark matter. These experiments are sensitive to both axion-like and vector fields. Current technology permits probes of these phenomena up to three orders of magnitude beyond astrophysical limits. The relativistic boost of the protons in these rings allows this scheme to have sensitivities comparable to atomic co-magnetometer experiments that can also probe similar phenomena. These complementary approaches can be used to extract the micro-physics of a signal, allowing us to distinguish between pseudo-scalar, magnetic and electric dipole moment interactions., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Analogous to the light-shining-through-wall setup proposed for axion-like particle searches, a pair of resonant cavities have been considered to search for an extra U(1) massive gauge boson, called a hidden photon, which mediates the interactions in the hidden sector. We propose a new cavity configuration, consisting of a cylindrical emitter surrounded by a hollow cylindrical detector to remarkably improve experimental sensitivity to hidden photon signals in the $\mu$eV mass range. An extensive study was conducted to find the optimal cavity geometry and resonant mode, which yields the best performance. In addition, a feasible application of superconducting RF technology was explored. We found the integration of these potential improvements will enhance the sensitivity to the effective kinetic mixing parameter between the hidden photon and the Standard Model photon by multiple orders of magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

The Axion Resonant InterAction Detection Experiment (ARIADNE) is a collaborative effort to search for the QCD axion using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), where the axion acts as a mediator of spin-dependent forces between an unpolarized tungsten source mass and a sample of polarized helium-3 gas. Since the experiment involves precision measurement of a small magnetization, it relies on limiting ordinary magnetic noise with superconducting magnetic shielding. In addition to the shielding, proper characterization of the noise level from other sources is crucial. We investigate one such noise source in detail: the magnetic noise due to impurities and Johnson noise in the tungsten source mass.

The axion, a consequence of the PQ mechanism proposed to solve the strong-CP problem of particle physics, has been considered as a compelling candidate for cold dark matter. The Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research (CAPP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has been establishing state-of-the-art axion search experiments in Korea since 2013. Relying on the haloscope technique, where axions are resonantly converted into microwave photons in a strong magnetic field, our strategy is to run multiple experiments in parallel to explore a large area of the axion parameter space. The ultimate goal is to probe axion dark matter in the mass range up to 40\,$\mu$eV with sensitivities of the QCD axion models. The current approaches to achieve this goal are twofold: 1) utilizing well-advanced technologies, including high field superconducting (SC) magnets, cryogenic dilution refrigerators, quantum-limited noise amplifiers, and 2) developing unique features, such as high-$Q$ SC cavities under high magnetic fields, and efficient cavity design for high-frequency axion search. We present the status and future prospects of the experiments and discuss the R\&D activities at IBS/CAPP.

In this report, we will briefly overview non-collider particle physics experiments. These experiments, such as neutrino oscillation phenomena, dark matter, and new particle searches, are in many respects, complementary to collider experiments. We will overview the current experiments, especially the current and future experiments in Korea.

Conventional axion dark matter search experiments employ cylindrical microwave cavities immersed in a solenoidal magnetic field. Exploring higher frequency regions requires smaller size cavities as the TM010 resonant frequencies scale inversely with cavity radius. One intuitive way to make efficient use of a given magnet volume, and thereby to increase the experimental sensitivity, is to bundle multiple cavities together and combine their individual outputs ensuring phase-matching of the coherent axion signal. We perform an extensive study for realistic design of a phase-matching mechanism for multiple-cavity systems and demonstrate its experimental feasibility using a double-cavity system., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

CAPP-8TB is an axion dark matter search experiment dedicated to an axion mass search near 6.7 $\mu$eV. The experiment uses a microwave resonant cavity under a strong magnetic field of 8 T produced by a superconducting solenoid magnet in a dilution refrigerator. We describe the experimental configuration used to search for a mass range of 6.62 to 6.82 $\mu$eV in the first phase of the experiment.
