Abstract Introduction Routine care studies of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) demonstrated attenuated responses to tumor necrosis factor inhibitors in current/past versus never smokers. This post hoc analysis assessed tofacitinib efficacy and safety in patients with PsA or AS by cigarette smoking status at trial screening. Methods Pooled data from phase 3 and long-term extension (safety only) PsA trials and phase 2 and 3 AS trials were assessed by current/past versus never smoker status. Analysis included efficacy and safety data for tofacitinib 5 (PsA/AS) and 10 (PsA only) mg twice daily (BID) or placebo, and safety data in AS for tofacitinib 2 and 10 mg BID. Efficacy outcomes included American College of Rheumatology ≥ 50% responses (ACR50) and minimal disease activity (MDA) responses to month (M)6/M3 (tofacitinib/placebo) in PsA; and ≥ 40% improvement in Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society responses (ASAS40) and AS Disease Activity Score (ASDAS)

Abstract Background Rimegepant orally disintegrating tablet (ODT), an oral small-molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist, is indicated for acute and preventive treatment of migraine in the United States and other countries. Previously, a large clinical trial assessed the efficacy and safety of rimegepant ODT 75 mg for the acute treatment of migraine in adults living in China or South Korea. A post hoc subgroup analysis of this trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of rimegepant for acute treatment of migraine in adults living in China. Copper plays a crucial role in the heterogenous dissociation of chlorothiophenols (CTPs) to form chlorothiophenoxy radicals (CTPRs), which is the initial and critical step in the formation of polychlorinated thianthrenes/dibenzothiophenes (PCTA/DTs). Here, first-principles calculations were performed to investigate the activity of Cu(111) surface towards the formation of adsorbed 2-CTPR from 2-CTP. The interaction between 2-CTP and Cu(111) surface was explored to find stable adsorption configurations. Besides, the decomposition routes of 2-CTP on the Cu(111) surface were further explored. Moreover, the effects of water on the formation of absorbed 2-CTPR on the Cu(111) surface were examined. Our results demonstrate that the flat adsorption of 2-CTP on the surface with adsorption energy in the range of −33.21 kcal/mol to −28.37 kcal/mol is more stable than the vertical adsorption with adsorption energy ranging from −23.53 kcal/mol to −13.38 kcal/mol. The Cu(111) surface catalyzes the conversion of 2-CTP into the adsorbed 2-CTPR with a modest energy barrier of 9.46 kcal/mol. Furthermore, water molecules exhibit stronger catalytic activity in this process with a decreased energy barrier of 5.87 kcal/mol through “water bridge” and hydrogen bonding. Specifically, the water accepts the hydrogen atom from 2-CTP and donates another hydrogen to the surface via “water bridge”. This research provides a molecular-level understanding of the heterogeneous formation of PCTA/DTs by fly ash, suggesting novel approaches for control strategy and legislation of dioxin analogues.

In this work, alkali metal Rb-loaded ZnO/In2O3 heterojunctions were synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal and impregnation methods. The morphology and structure of the synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The enhancement mechanism of the nitrogen dioxide gas sensing performance of the Rb-loaded ZnO/In2O3 heterojunctions was systematically investigated at room temperature using density-functional theory calculations and experimental validation. The experimental tests showed that the Rb-loaded ZnO/In2O3 sensor achieved an excellent response value of 24.2 for 1 ppm NO2, with response and recovery times of 55 and 21 s, respectively. This result is 20 times higher than that of pure ZnO sensors and two times higher than that of ZnO/In2O3 sensors, indicating that the Rb-loaded ZnO/In2O3 sensor has a more pronounced enhancement in performance for NO2. This study not only revealed the mechanism by which Rb loading affects the electronic structure and gas molecule adsorption behavior on the surface of ZnO/In2O3 heterojunctions but also provides theoretical guidance and technical support for the development of high-performance room-temperature NO2 sensors.

The development of efficient and low‐cost bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative but remains challenging in rechargeable zinc–air batteries. Herein, a metal oxidation‐assisted approach is developed for the facile synthesis of a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst (Co@NC@LDHs) which is composed of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets in situ vertically grown on the surface of hollow carbon nanoframes encapsulating Co nanoparticles (Co@NC). Specifically, the vertical LDHs distributing on the carbon surface ensure the maximized number of accessible active sites and the interaction between LDHs with the carbon matrix. The hierarchically structured bifunctional Co@NC@LDHs display an overpotential of 0.33 V at 10 mA cm−2 for OER and a half‐wave potential of 0.88 V for ORR. The potential gap (ΔE) of Co@NC@LDHs is calculated to be 0.68 V, outperforming the mixed Pt/C + RuO2 catalysts (ΔE = 0.77 V), manifesting its superior bifunctional electrocatalysis performance. Moreover, the Zn–air batteries based on Co@NC@LDHs electrocatalyst exhibit a high peak power density (185.2 mW cm−2) and excellent durability (5.0 mA cm−2 over 500 h). This work may provide a facile strategy for the fabrication of LDHs on carbon substrate, acting as efficient catalysts for broad energy‐related applications.

Exploring efficient electrocatalysts with fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism is important for CO2 electroreduction. Here, the authors report a strategy of promoting water dissociation to achieve high solar to chemical conversion and identify key surface species for the reaction.

This paper presents a numerical simulation of the steel grade transition from the ladle nozzle to the solidification end of the bloom. The simulation is based on models encompassing fluid flow, solidification, heat transfer, an electromagnetic field, and solute transport. To validate the accuracy of the steel grade transition model, transition blooms of high-carbon steel are sampled. Subsequently, the model is applied to investigating the steel grade transition between medium-carbon steel and low-carbon steel. The findings indicate that the regions exhibiting significant differences between their molten steel flow velocity and bloom casting speed in the strand model are primarily concentrated within 1 m below the meniscus. Additionally, the mushy zone in the strand model possesses a substantial volume. Solute elements continuously permeate the liquid phase from the solid phase through the mushy zone. Consequently, the distribution of solute elements in the transition bloom is primarily influenced by the molten steel flow in the tundish and macro-segregation in the casting process. The segregation degree of each solute element varies among grades with different carbon contents. In the austenite phase, the segregation degree of each element follows the order C > Si > Mo > Mn > Cr > Ni, while in the ferrite phase, the segregation degree is ordered as C > Si = Mn. Considering macro-segregation, the transition bloom partition model proves to be more stringent than the original partition method. This results in longer transition blooms when a significant difference exists between the new and old grades. For example, in Scheme 1, the original plan transition bloom length is 8.88 m, whereas the new plan transition bloom length is 10.88 m. Similarly, in Scheme 2, the original plan transition bloom length is 34.64 m, and the new plan transition bloom length is 35.16 m. Conversely, shorter partition intervals occur when there is an overlap in the composition of the new and old grades. In Scheme 3, the original plan partition interval for the new and old grades is 4.08 m, while the new plan partition interval is reduced to 0.94 m.

In this paper, a mathematical model of an electromagnetic field during an electroslag remelting process of industrial-scale slab was established using a Maxwell 3D module in Ansys Electromagnetics Suite. The distribution characteristics of the magnetic field intensity, current density and Joule heat density during the electroslag remelting process were analyzed in detail. On this basis, the influence of the current frequency on the electroslag remelting process of an industrial scale is studied, and the influence of process parameters such as the slag pool depth, electrode insertion depth and ingot height on the electromagnetic field is also considered. The results show that the Joule heat generated in the slag pool is much greater than that of the electrode and the ingot. The maximum Joule heat is located at the contact between the electrode corner and the slag pool, and the Joule heat near the middle of the two electrodes is greater than the rest. With the increase in the current frequency, the current density distribution in the slag cell is basically unchanged. The current density inside the two electrodes increases obviously with the current frequency. When the current frequency increases from 10 Hz to 50 Hz, the maximum current density at the inner surface of the electrode increases by 14.7%. The current distribution at the lower side of the electrode in the slag pool is relatively uniform, and the current density in this region decreases with the increase in the height of the slag pool and the increase in the depth of the electrode inserted into the slag pool.

Marine steel requires excellent toughness and corrosion resistance in a low-temperature seawater environment. In this study, corrosion tests on E40 steel were performed, including electrochemical testing of the weld metal and heat-affected zone, dynamic corrosion testing in a simulated seawater environment, and the analysis and comparison of results obtained using different methods. The corrosion resistance of E40 was determined by measuring the saturation current density of the anodic dissolution of the steel in a corrosive medium by an electrochemical method. Under laboratory conditions, the corrosion resistance was investigated under simulated seawater. The results showed that regions with uneven microhardness corresponded to the inhomogeneity of the corrosion potential, with measured fluctuations of up to 40 mV. Nanoscale corrosive–aggressive non-metallic inclusions served as a substrate for the deposition of titanium and niobium carbonitrides, thereby weakening the corrosion resistance. The corrosion rate of the base metal was 1.16–1.64 mm/year, which was slightly higher than that of the heat-affected zone. The influence of deposition on the corrosion performance of welded joints under different deoxygenation processes was studied, and the deposition composition was controlled by a deoxygenation process to improve the corrosion resistance of the steel plate.

In laser active detection, detection performance is affected by optical noise, laser interference, and environmental background interference. Conventional methods to filter optical noise take advantage of the differences between signal and noise in wavelength and polarization. Due to the limitations of traditional methods in the physical dimension, noise cannot be completely filtered out. In this manuscript, a new method of noise filtering based on the spatial distribution difference between the quantum orbital angular momentum beam and the background noise is proposed. The use of beams containing quantum orbital angular momentum can make the signal light have a new physical dimension and enrich the information of emitted light. We conduct a complete theoretical analysis and provide a proof-of-principle experiment. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis results, and there is a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of more than five times in laser active detection. Our method meets the urgent needs of laser active detection and can be applied in the field of high-quality target detection.

As a novel kind of focus tunable lens, dielectric elastomer actuated liquid lens has a compact structure, fast response, low cost, and outstanding tunability, which makes it attract extensive attention. Here, we present a computational model of a dielectric elastomer actuated lens with dual chambers that consist of three elastic membranes and two disconnected chambers filled with conductive and transparent liquid. The intermediate layer actuated by applied voltage deforms, changing the curvature of passive membranes and obtaining a new focal length. The simulation results calculated by the shooting method with two guessed values agree well with the experimental results. Based on this model, the effects of a set of parameters, including chamber radii, shear modulus, permittivity, prestretch ratios, and injected liquid volumes, on the tuning performance of the lens are analyzed. It is found that, by regulating the liquid volume in each chamber, both the initial focal length and the tuning range can be adjusted easily. Under the condition with specific liquid volumes, the lens possesses both positive and negative focal length during voltage actuation, indicating promoted tuning performance, which is acclaimed for optimal design.

Preserving viable pollen is of great interest to breeders to maintain desirable germplasm for future inbreeding. Ultra-low temperature preservation of pollen is an effective and safe way for long-term storage of plant germplasm resources. In this study, we improved methods for the preservation of soybean pollen at ultra-low temperature. Soybean flowers at the initially-open stage were collected at 6–10 a.m. during the fully-bloom stage of soybean plants and were dehydrated for 10 h and then frozen and stored at −196 or −80°C. In vitro culture experiments showed that the viability of preserved pollen remained as high as about 90%. The off-season (local site Heihe) and off-site (Beijing, after long-distance express delivery from Heihe) hybridization verification was conducted, and no significant difference in true hybrid rate was founded between the preserved pollen and the fresh pollen. The ultra-low temperature preservation technology for soybean pollen could break the spatiotemporal limit of soybean hybridization and facilitate the development of engineered soybean breeding.

We propose and numerically demonstrate the generation of wideband millimeter-wave (mmW) flat chaos with controllable power spectrum by injection of chaotic signal from external cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL) into optical time lens with noise phase modulation. Simulation results indicate consistent elimination of the ECSL relaxation oscillation frequency domination over the RF spectrum for large scale parameters of the optical time lens module and a wideband flat chaos, whose efficient bandwidth rapidly increases with the bandwidth of the noise signal driving the phase modulator and phase modulation index. Besides, we show that the time delay signature suppression can be concurrently achieved for moderate values of the noise bandwidth and phase modulation index. The proposed wideband mmW flat chaos exhibits great potential applications for ultrahigh-speed chaos communications, mmW radars and macroscopic mmW noise source required for mmW research and design.

Abstract Background Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) is a way of giving surfactant without endotracheal intubation and has shown to be promising in reducing the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. However, the mechanism underlying its beneficial effect and variations in the technique of administration may prevent its widespread use. This trial aims to evaluate the effects of two methods of surfactant administration, LISA or endotracheal surfactant administration followed by low peak pressure (LPPSA) ventilation, in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Methods The LISA Or Low Peak Pressure trial is to be conducted in 14 tertiary neonatal intensive care units in China. A total of 600 preterm infants born with gestational age between 250/7 and 316/7 weeks and with a primary diagnosis of RDS will be involved in the study. Infants will be randomized to the LISA or LPPSA group when surfactant therapy is indicated. Primary outcomes include mortality, severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA), and mechanical ventilation (MV) in the first 72 h of life. Secondary outcomes include the days of MV, duration of all sorts of non-invasive respiratory support, fraction of inspired oxygen, oxygen saturation before and after surfactant administration, and time required to perform the procedure for surfactant administration. The incidence of comorbidities, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA), pneumothorax, and massive pulmonary hemorrhage within 48 h of surfactant administration, and the failure rates of each technique will be determined. Discussion Data from recent systematic review and meta-analysis have suggested a possible improvement in outcomes of preterm infants with RDS by the LISA technique. However, robust evidence is lacking. Why LISA plays a potential role in reducing respiratory morbidity, mainly BPD in preterm infants, remains unclear. The possible explanations are the active and uninterrupted delivery of continuous positive airway pressure during the LISA procedure and the avoidance of complications caused by intubation and relatively high pressure/volume ventilation following surfactant administration. We hypothesized that LISA’s effectiveness lies mainly in avoiding relatively high-pressure positive ventilation immediately following surfactant administration. Thus, this multicenter randomized controlled trial will focus on issues of endotracheal intubation and the pressure/volume used during conventional surfactant administration. The effectiveness, safety and comorbidities of preterm infants following LISA or LPPSA will be evaluated. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR1900020970 . The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method was adopted to explore impact of interface chemistry on pearlite mechanical response of Bagaryatskii orientation relationship between ferrite and cementite. By changing terminal surface types of cementite at ferrite-cementite interface, this study analyzed influence of interface chemistry on pearlite peak stress and plastic deformation behavior, as well as strain transmission between two phases (ferrite and cementite) during stretching process. Two horizontal directions parallel to pearlite interface were considered as loading directions respectively. The results show pearlite will experience inelastic deformation due to atomic slip in ferrite phase. When terminal surface of cementite at interface is FeC-Fe, the atomic slip in ferrite is the most difficult to occur, and inelastic deformation shall be suppressed. At this time, pearlite produces the largest peak stress. Types of terminal surface and loading direction will affect slip systems activated in ferrite. Stretching along ${\left[100\right]}_{\theta }$ direction: for pearlite with Fe-FeC and Fe-Fe cementite terminal surfaces at interface, S1 ({112} 〈111〉) slip system in ferrite is activated. While terminal surface is FeC-Fe pearlite, what is activated is S2 slip system ({110} 〈111〉) in ferrite. Stretching along ${\left[010\right]}_{\theta }$ direction: regardless of types of terminal surface, slip systems activated are Type S2. Compared with S1 slip system, activation of S2 slip system makes is easier for plastic deformation in ferrite to pass through ferrite-cementite interface to the cementite.

Nitrous acid (HONO) plays a key role in atmospheric chemistry. Nevertheless, the HONO formation mechanism in the atmosphere, especially in the marine boundary layer, remains to be fully understood. Here, Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamic and metadynamics simulations were performed to study the formation mechanism of HONO from the oxidation reactions of ClO radical and NO with the addition of (H2O)1–2, considering a monohydrated system ((ClO)(NO)(H2O)1) and dihydrated system ((ClO)(NO)(H2O)2), as well as at the air-water interface. This study shows that HONO formation follows a single-water mechanism in gas-phase and air-water interface systems. The free-energy barrier of the (ClO)(NO)(H2O)1 system was 9.66 kJ mol−1, whereas the (ClO)(NO)(H2O)2 system was a barrierless reaction. HONO formation at the air-water interface was faster than that in monohydrated and dihydrated systems. Although the concentration of ClO radical in the marine boundary layer is two orders higher than that of Cl radical, the production rates of HONO from the (ClO)(NO)(H2O)1 system are six orders lower than that from the (Cl)(NO)(H2O)1 system, which means that Cl radical dominates HONO formation rather than ClO radical in the marine boundary layer. These results can deepen our understanding of the HONO formation mechanism and be used to reduce HONO emissions and establish HONO-control strategies.

Carbazole is one of the typical heterocyclic aromatic compounds (NSO-HETs) observed in polluted urban atmosphere, which has become a serious environmental concern. The most important atmospheric loss process of carbazole is the reaction with OH radical. The present work investigated the mechanism of OH-initiated atmospheric oxidation degradation of carbazole by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level. The rate constants were determined by the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theory. The lifetime of carbazole determined by OH was compared with other typical NSO-HETs. The theoretical results show that the degradation of carbazole initiated by OH radical includes four types of reactions: OH additions to “bend” C atoms, OH additions to “benzene ring” C atoms, H abstractions from C-H bonds and the H abstraction from N-H bond. The OH addition to C1 atom and the H abstraction from N-H bond are energetically favorable. The main oxidation products are hydroxycarbazole, dialdehyde, carbazolequinone, carbazole-ol, hydroxy-carbazole-one and hydroperoxyl-carbazole-one. The calculated overall rate constant of carbazole oxidation by OH radical is 6.52 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and the atmospheric lifetime is 37.70 h under the condition of 298 K and 1 atm. The rate constant of carbazole determined by OH radical is similar with that of dibenzothiophene oxidation but lower than those of pyrrole, indole, dibenzofuran and fluorene. This work provides a theoretical investigation of the oxygenated mechanism of NSO-HETs in the atmosphere and should help to clarify their potential health risk for determining the reaction pathways and environmental influence of carbazole.

To study the effect of Ce on the morphology of manganese sulfide, we added different contents of Ce into U75V heavy rail steel. The composition and morphology of sulfide in steel were analyzed. The inclusions’ number, size, and aspect ratio were analyzed by automatic scanning electron microscope ASPEX. The results show that the inclusions in heavy rail steel without Ce are elongated MnS and irregular Al-Si-Ca-O inclusions. With the increase of Ce from 52 ppm to 340 ppm, the composition of main inclusions changes along the route of Ce2O2S-MnS → Ce2O2S-MnS-Ce2S3 → Ce2O2S-Ce3S4-Ce2S3 → Ce2O2S-Ce3S4-CeS. Ce has a noticeable spheroidization effect on MnS, which can make inclusions finely dispersed. When Ce content is 139 ppm, the average size of inclusions is the smallest. The mechanism of Ce-modified MnS was discussed by combining experimental results with thermodynamic calculations. Finally, the effect of Ce treatment on inhibiting MnS deformation was verified by simulated rolling.

Polar steel requires excellent toughness and corrosion resistance for breaking icy surfaces in low-temperature seawater environments. In this study, the effect of inclusions on the corrosion resistance of polar steel was examined. In the experiments conducted, the composition and morphology of the inclusions in steel were controlled using different deoxidation methods during steel refining. The morphology and composition of the corrosion-resistant active inclusions were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of polar steel was determined by measuring the saturation current density of the anodic dissolution of steel in a corrosive medium via an electrochemical method. The corrosion resistance under simulated seawater was also investigated under laboratory conditions. It was found that as the ratio of Al/Mg approaches the stoichiometric composition of the spinel (2.3–2.5), the inclusions become less active; as the ratio increases further, the corrosion-resistant activity increases due to the formation of MgAl2O4⋅CaO complexes, leading to an increase in local stress around the inclusions. If steel is deoxidized with Zr–Ti, small Zr–Ti complex oxides form in the steel, providing nucleation particles for the precipitation of spheroidized and uniformly distributed MnS. Therefore, steel deoxidized with Zr–Ti has better seawater corrosion resistance than Al-deoxidized steel.

Surface description is fundamental in mechanical contact analysis. In this paper, some of the most common approaches for roughness description are first briefly described. Some models for approximating a real rough profile with parabolas that guarantee the preservation of some specific characteristics are presented. The specimens of aluminum alloy with different surface roughnesses are prepared and measured. A data analysis program is developed to identify the measured profile with quadratic functions for different approximating criteria. Based on this, the effect of the approximating criterion and the sampling interval on the surface roughness parameters and the mechanical parameters is then presented and compared. The results show that the surface roughness Ra, asperity height H, and peak radii R increase with increasing surface roughnesses for different approximating criteria. The same root mean square approximating criterion is more suitable for calculating the surface roughness Ra. The asperity height H and peak radii R increase with increasing sampling intervals for all roughnesses, while the trend is opposite for the surface roughness Ra. The sampling interval has little effect on these parameters, especially for smoother surfaces.

Vacuum freeze-drying is a new and high technology on agricultural product dehydrating dry, but it faces the high cost problem caused by high energy consumption. This study investigated the effect of ultrasound (US), freeze-thawing (including the freeze-air thawing (AT), freeze-water thawing (WT), freeze-ultrasound thawing (UST), and freeze-air ultrasound thawing (AT + US)) pretreatments on the vacuum freeze-drying efficiency and the quality of dried okra. The results indicated that the application of ultrasound and different freeze-thawing pretreatments reduced the drying time by 25.0%–62.50% and the total energy consumption was 24.28%–62.35% less. The AT pretreatment reduced the time by of okra slices by 62.50% and the total energy consumption was 62.35% less. The significant decrease in drying time was due to a change in the microstructure caused by pretreatment. Besides, the okra pretreated with the US retained most of the quality characteristics (flavor, color, hardness, and frangibility) among all methods, while, AT + US had the most changeable characteristics in quality, which is deprecated in our study. The okra pretreated with the US and AT, separately, had the best dry matter content loss (9.008%, 5.602%), lower chlorophyll degradation (5.05%, 5.44% less), and higher contents of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and pectin, with strong antioxidant capacity, compared to other methods. The pretreatments did not have a large effect on the functional groups and the structure of pectin, but slightly affected the viscosity. It can be concluded that AT and US pretreatment methods are better than others.

The chlorothiobenzenes (CTBs) are the principal precursors for the formation of polychlorinated thianthrene/dibenzothiophenes (PCTA/DTs), which have high toxicity and wide distribution in the environment. Under the pyrolysis or combustion conditions, CTBs can react with H/·OH radicals to form the chlorothiobenzyl radicals (CTBRs) through abstraction of the chlorothiobenzyl-hydrogen. The water molecule can play an important role in this process. The coupling of CTBRs is the essential first step in forming PCTA/DTs. In this paper, quantum chemical calculations were carried out to investigate the formation of CTBRs from the complete series reactions of 19 chlorothiobenzene (CTB) congeners with H/·OH radicals in the presence of the water molecule. Using the MPWB1K/6-311 + G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31 + G(d,p) energy level, schematic energy profiles were constructed with the water molecule and then compared with the non-hydrated case. The present study shows that structural parameters and thermal data, as well as CTBRs formation potential from CTBs, are strongly dominated by the chlorine substitution at the ortho-position of CTBs. Meanwhile, the water molecule can promote the CTBR formation from CTBs abstracted by H/·OH, which has a stronger catalysis effect on the H abstraction from CTBs by OH than from CTBs by H. This study may provide reference parameters for future experimental research, which would enhance measures to reduce dioxin emission and establish dioxin control strategies.

To scrutinize the current application of building information modelling (BIM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) integration in research as well as industrial fields, the present study conducted a holistic review including a bibliometric exploration for existing articles, specific content analysis in different sectors, and follow-up qualitative discussion for the potential of this integrated technology. The bibliometric exploration is focused on analyzing main journals, keywords, and chronological change in representative research content by selecting 115 relevant studies. In content analysis, the representative integrated BIM and CFD application cases are divided into three different sectors. The functionality, interoperability, and sustainability of such integration in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects are described in detail. Furthermore, the future research based on the applications of BIM and CFD integration is discussed. Specifically, the more advanced hazard analysis is proposed reflecting the strength of such an integration. Comprehensive information for the possible hazards in AEC projects is digitized and quantified to make a more sensitive hazard recognition tool which can formalize reduction strategies and measures of potential hazards. As a result, the present review study contributes to relevant research by identifying representative application parts and practical requirements for BIM and CFD integration in whole design aspects, reviewing the current research trends and future direction in detail, and analyzing the major issues, such as an interoperability in BIM-compatible CFD for sustainable built environments.

Chuzhou chrysanthemum is well-known in China and has been used to make tea over centuries. However, neither integrated background about the antibacterial activity nor the antibacterial mechanism of Chuzhou chrysanthemum oil (CCO) is available. SDS-PAGE analysis, oxidative respiratory metabolism measurement and the DNA topoisomerase activity were employed to investigate the antibacterial mechanism of CCO. CCO could lead to the leakage of proteins of E. coli and S. aureus cells, and the protein contents in E. coli and S. aureus were dropped by 47.21% and 36.44% respectively after CCO treatment. SDS-PAGE results confirmed the disruptive action of CCO on cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. CCO could affect the Hexose Monophophate Pathway of E. coli and the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas Pathway of S. aureus. Furthermore, the result of DNA topoisomerase inhibition assay showed that the activity of topoisomerase I and topoisomerase II could be both inhibited by CCO treatment.

Aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss stems from damage or loss of mechanosensory hair cells in the inner ear. Intrinsic mitochondrial cell death pathway plays a key role in that cellular dysfunction for which no proven effective therapies against oto-toxicities exist. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop a new mitochondrial targeting drug delivery system (DDS) that provided improved protection from gentamicin. Particularly, SS-31 peptide-conjugated geranylgeranylacetone (GGA) loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles were constructed successfully via emulsion-solvent evaporation method. The zebrafish lateral line sensory system was used as an in vivo evaluating platform to investigate the protective efficiency against gentamicin. SS-31 modification significantly reduced the activity of mechanoelectrical transduction (MET) channel and gentamicin uptake in zebrafish lateral line hair cells. As expected, SS-31 conjugated nanoparticles showed mitochondrial specific accumulation in hair cells when compared with unconjugated formulations. Furthermore, intracellular SS-31 modified PLGA NPs slightly enhanced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, ΔΨm) and then returned to a steady-state, indicating their effect on the respiratory chain complexes in mitochondria. GGA loaded SS-31 conjugated nanoparticles demonstrated the most favorable hair cells survivals against gentamicin when compared with unconjugated groups whereas blank formulations failed to exhibit potency, indicating that the efficiency was attributed to drug delivery of GGA. These results suggest that our constructed mitochondria-targeting PLGA based DDS have potential application in protecting hair cells from ototoxic agents.

Scaffolding serves as one construction trade with high importance. However, scaffolding suffers from low productivity and high cost in Australia. Activity Analysis is a continuous procedure of assessing and improving the amount of time that craft workers spend on one single construction trade, which is a functional method for monitoring onsite operation and analyzing conditions causing delays or productivity decline. Workface assessment is an initial step for activity analysis to manually record the time that workers spend on each activity category. This paper proposes a method of automatic scaffolding workface assessment using a 2D video camera to capture scaffolding activities and the model of key joints and skeleton extraction, as well as machine learning classifiers, were used for activity classification. Additionally, a case study was conducted and showed that the proposed method is a feasible and practical way for automatic scaffolding workface assessment.

Off-site construction has been increasingly employed due to its advantages, for instance, improved quality control, reduced skills labour, faster construction time, decreased material wastage and safe working environment. As the most cutting-edge off-site construction, modular buildings have been utilised for residential building, student accommodation, and hotel projects. However, because of existing and underlying constraints, the adoption of modular buildings is still relatively low. To reveal factors hindering the development of high-rise modular buildings, a comprehensive literature review, coupled with a focus group study, were conducted. A questionnaire survey inquiring about all stakeholders was implemented to quantify constraints. The results were further examined according to a real-life case study. This paper manifested that “Lack of coordination and communication among stakeholders”, “Higher cost”, “Lack of government support”, “Lack of experience and expertise”, “Lack of building codes and standards”, “Poor supply chain integration”, and “Complexity of connection” are the top barriers curbing the uptake of modular buildings. The findings should provide a valuable reference for stakeholders adopting modular buildings, whilst mitigating risks amid modular construction. Future research is expected to exploit building information modelling and design for manufacture and assembly to alleviate these existing constraints and promote the performance of modular construction as well.

The transient evolution of inclusions during Al and Ti additions in a Fe-20 mass pct Cr alloy was investigated using polished cross sections and electrolytic extraction. After Al addition, the evolution of Al2O3-based inclusions based upon the area and particle size passed through the following three main stages with time: Particle agglomeration, inclusion floating, and a slow decrease of the remaining Al2O3-based inclusions. Titanium wire was fed into the steel at the end of the floating stage after Al addition when the Ostwald ripening process was finished. Immediately after Ti addition, the transient phase of Ti oxide was readily generated on the existing Al2O3-based inclusion and disappeared due to Al reduction as time progressed. The formation of the transient TiOx phase was affected by the low disregistry between Al2O3 and TiOx and the local Ti supersaturation, which cannot be predicted by the equilibrium relations of Ti−O−N or Ti−Al−O in the high-Cr-containing melt. Because of the local supersaturation of dissolved [%Ti] and [%N] shortly after Ti addition, TiN associated with existing inclusions and three types of individual TiN including single cubes, twinned inclusions, and clusters were identified. In order to minimize the Ti loss caused by the formation of Ti-rich zones during the transient stages, the removal of large Al2O3-based particles including aggregates, clusters, and flower-shaped inclusions should be promoted by stirring before Ti addition. After Ti addition, Brownian and turbulent were the major factors affecting the collision of particles smaller than the threshold of 2.7 μm. The agglomeration of inclusions larger than this threshold was mainly dominated by turbulent and Stokes’ collisions.

Three-dimensional hierarchical SnO2/ZnO hetero-nanofibers were fabricated by the electrospinning method followed with a low-temperature water bath treatment. These hierarchical hollow SnO2 nanofibers were assembled by the SnO2 nanoparticles through the electrospinning process and then the ZnO nanorods were grown vertically on the surface of SnO2 nanoparticles, forming the 3D nanostructure. The synthesized hollow SnO2/ZnO heterojunctions nanofibers were further employed to be a gas-sensing material for detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) species such as acetone vapor, which is proposed as a gas biomarker for diabetes. It shows that the heterojunction nanofibers-based sensor exhibited excellent sensing properties to acetone vapor. The sensor shows a good selectivity to acetone in the interfering gases of ethanol, ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene, and methanol. The enhanced sensing performance may be due to the fact that n-n 3D heterojunctions, existing at the interface between ZnO nanorods and SnO2 particles in the SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites, could prompt significant changes in potential barrier height when exposed to acetone vapor, and gas-sensing mechanisms were analyzed and explained by Schottky barrier changes in SnO2/ZnO 3D hetero-nanofibers.

In order to improve the sensing properties of tin dioxide gas sensor, four kinds of different SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, different particle size of MFI type zeolites (ZSM-5) were coated on the SnO2 to prepared zeolite modified gas sensors, and the gas sensing properties were tested. The measurement results showed that the response values of ZSM-5 zeolite (SiO2/Al2O3 = 70, grain size 300 nm) coated SnO2 gas sensors to formaldehyde vapor were increased, and the response to acetone decreased compared with that of SnO2 gas sensor, indicating an improved selectivity property. The other three ZSM-5 zeolites with SiO2/Al2O3 70, 150 and 470, respectively, and grain sizes all around 1 μm coated SnO2 sensors did not show much difference with SnO2 sensor for the response properties to both formaldehyde and acetone. The sensing mechanism of ZSM-5 modified sensors was briefly analyzed.

In2O3/SnO2 composite hetero-nanofibers were synthesized by an electrospinning technique for detecting indoor volatile organic gases. The physical and chemical properties of In2O3/SnO2 hetero-nanofibers were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), specific surface Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gas sensing properties of In2O3/SnO2 composite hetero-nanofibers were measured with six kinds of indoor volatile organic gases in concentration range of 0.5~50 ppm at the operating temperature of 275 °C. The In2O3/SnO2 composite hetero-nanofibers sensor exhibited good formaldehyde sensing properties, which would be attributed to the formation of n-n homotype heterojunction in the In2O3/SnO2 composite hetero-nanofibers. Finally, the sensing mechanism of the In2O3/SnO2 composite hetero-nanofibers was analyzed based on the energy-band principle.

The rotation accuracy of a machine tool spindle is essential for ensuring the machining precision. Due to the existence of manufacturing and assembly errors, the rotation accuracy of the spindle will be inevitably impacted and degraded. Therefore, to reduce the influence of the errors and improve the work performance, this paper focuses on accuracy analysis for the spindle and a novel optimization-oriented skin model shape method to tackle this highly complex problem. First, a structural analysis of the spindle is carried out to elaborate the intractable full parallel collections in the assembly. Then, based on the iterative closest point method, the deviation propagation of the spindle considering complex full parallel collections is transformed into an optimization problem, in which the skin model shapes and small displacement torsor are utilized to represent the form and pose errors of the part, respectively. By solving the optimization problem, assembly accuracy analysis for the spindle in terms of full parallel connections and form errors is accordingly achieved. On this basis, the tolerance analysis model of the spindle is also comprehensively established by employing the corresponding error simulation. Finally, measurement experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiments show the predicted rotation runout and tolerance magnitude are close to the testing results, therefore indicating the proposed method can provide effective accuracy analysis for spindles.
