Abstract Photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a clinical method relies on appropriate light delivery to activate photosensitizers, usually necessitates the utilization of cumbersome surgical instruments and high irradiation intensity, along with the requirement for hospitalization. To extend the applicability of PDT beyond hospital for better patient mobility, we design a wearable and self-powered metronomic PDT (mPDT) system for chronic wound infection treatment. A flexible alternative current electroluminescent (ACEL) device is constructed through sandwiching an emissive layer between conductive hydrogel electrodes. This ACEL device works as a therapeutic patch by loading photosensitizer (PS) in its bottom hydrogel electrode, thus aviods the intravenous administration to patients. Under the triboelectric nanogenerator generated AC pulse, the electroluminescence produced from emissive layer can be absorbed by the PS-loaded electrode to generate reactive oxygen species for mPDT. Benefited from its arbitrary tailorability, this device can be customized into on-demand shapes and sizes. Using diabetic infected wound as a model condition, this ACEL mPDT device effectively eliminates drug-resistant bacteria and accelerates wound healing. Thus, the body-worn optoelectronic device successfully avoids the utilization of extracorporeal physical light and power sources, providing a promising strategy for convenient, user-friendly, and prolonged treatment of superficial diseases.

Abstract Although antibody–drug conjugate (ADC) or immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) alone fosters hope for the treatment of cancer, the effect of single drug treatment is limited and the safety profile of ADC and ICI therapy remains unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of the combination of ADC and ICI therapy. This study type is a systematic review and meta-analysis. Literature retrieval was carried out through PubMed, Embase, Cochrane from inception to Jun. 5, 2024. Then, after data extraction, overall response rate (ORR) and adverse effects (AEs) were used to study its efficiency and safety. Publication bias was also calculated through Funnel plot, Begg's Test and Egger's test. Heterogeneity was investigated through subgroup and sensitivity analysis. The research protocol was registered with the PROSPERO (CRD42023375601). A total of 12 eligible clinical studies with 584 patients were included. The pooled ORR was 58% (95%CI 46%, 70%). Subgroup analysis showed an ORR of 77% (95%CI 63%, 91%) in classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) and an ORR of 73% (95%CI 56%, 90%) in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The most common AEs was peripheral neuropathy (38.0%). Meanwhile, AEs on skin (13.1–20.0%) and digestive system (9.0–36.0%) was hard be overlooked. ADC + ICI therapy may be recommended in cancer treatment, especially in cHL and NHL. However, strategies to manage toxicities warranted further exploration.

Abstract Herein, we aimed to identify blood biomarkers that compensate for the poor specificity of D-dimer in the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). S100A8 was identified by conducting protein microarray analysis of blood samples from patients with and without DVT. We used ELISA to detect S100A8, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 expression levels in human blood and evaluated their correlations. Additionally, we employed human recombinant protein S100A8 to induce human umbilical vein endothelial cells and examined the role of the TLR4/MAPK/VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 signaling axes in the pathogenic mechanism of S100A8. Simultaneously, we constructed a rat model of thrombosis induced by inferior vena cava stenosis and detected levels of S100A8, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 in the blood of DVT rats using ELISA. The associations of thrombus tissue, neutrophils, and CD68-positive cells with S100A8 and p38MAPK, TLR4, and VCAM-1 expression levels in vein walls were explored. The results revealed that blood S100A8 was significantly upregulated during the acute phase of DVT and activated p38MAPK expression by combining with TLR4 to enhance the expression and secretion of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1, thereby affecting the occurrence and development of DVT. Therefore, S100A8 could be a potential biomarker for early diagnosis and screening of DVT.

Abstract Our objective in this study is to determine whether intra-articular injection of miRNA-1 can attenuate the progression of OA in rats by down regulating Ihh. Knee chondrocytes were isolated from male Sprague–Dawley rats aged 2–3 days. Second-generation chondrocytes were transfected with miR-1 mimic and empty vector with lipo3000 for 6 h and then stimulated with 10 ng/mL IL-1β for 24 h. OA-related and cartilage matrix genes were quantified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Two-month-old male Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into three groups (n = 30?): sham operation group + 50 µL saline, anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) group + 50 µL miR-1 agomir (concentration), and control group ACLT + 50 µL miR-1 agomir. Treatment was started one week after the operation. All animals were euthanized eight weeks after the operation. X-rays and micro-CT were used to detect imaging changes in the knee joints. FMT was used to monitor joint inflammation in vivo. Safranin O staining was used to detect morphological changes in articular cartilage. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect Col2, Col10, metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13). RT-qPCR was used to detect gene changes includingmiR-1, Col2, Col10, MMP-13, Ihh, Smo, Gli1, Gli2, and Gli3. Overexpression of miR-1 in IL-1β-stimulated chondrocytes reduced the levels of Ihh, MMP-13, and Col10 but increased the levels of Col2 and aggrecan. Intra-articular injection of miR-1 agomir reduced osteophyte formation, inflammation, and prevented cartilage damage. RT-qPCR results indicated that the miR-1 agomir increased articular cartilage anabolism and inhibited cartilage catabonism. miR-1 can attenuate the progression of OA by downregulating Ihh.

Continued population growth and limited land availability will facilitate the utilization of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in sustainable agriculture to enhance crop yields. The PGRs industry has progressed significantly from 2003 to 2022, resulting in a surge of research activities in the field of PGRs. However, the existing studies lack the exploration of the industry trends, as well as the challenges and opportunities for innovation in PGR development. Here, we analyze the dynamic trends within the PGR industry by examining key factors such as the PGR market, patent applications, scientific papers, and PGRs registrations from 2003 to 2022. Additionally, we investigate the specific effects of major agrochemicals on plants. These data will provide essential insights into the ongoing evolution and future trends of PGRs. Importantly, it is crucial to actively pursue research and development (R&D) of a broader range of PGRs to respond to the current needs of the PGR market and drive further growth therein.

BackgroundA patient-centered dialysis treatment option requires an understanding of patient preferences for alternative vascular accesses and nephrologists often face difficulties when recommending vascular access to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. We aimed to quantify the relative importance of various vascular access characteristics to patients, healthcare providers and general population, and how they affect acceptability for patients and healthcare providers.MethodsIn a discrete choice experiment, patients with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), healthcare providers, and individuals from the general population were invited to respond to a series of hypothetical vascular access scenarios that differed in five attributes: cumulative patency, infection rate, thrombosis rate, cost, and time to maturation. We estimated the respondents’ preference heterogeneity and relative importance of the attributes with a mixed logit model (MXL) and predicted the willingness to pay (WTP) of respondents via a multinomial logit model (MNL).ResultsHealthcare providers (n = 316) and the general population (n = 268) exhibited a favorable inclination toward longer cumulative patency, lower access infection rate and lower access thrombosis rate. In contrast, the patients (n = 253) showed a preference for a 3-year cumulative patency, 8% access infection rate, 35% access thrombosis rate and 1.5 access maturity time, with only the 3-year cumulative patency reaching statistical significance. Among the three respondent groups, the general population found cumulative patency less important than healthcare providers and patients did. Patients demonstrated the highest WTP for cumulative patency, indicating a willingness to pay an extra RMB$24,720(US$3,708) for each additional year of patency time.ConclusionPatients and healthcare providers had a strong preference for vascular access with superior patency. While the general population preferred vascular access with lower thrombosis rates. These results indicate that most patients prefer autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) as an appropriate choice for vascular access due to its superior patency and lower complications than other vascular access types.

Abstract One of the crucial issues for applying electret/triboelectric power generators in the Internet of Things (IoT) is to take full advantage of specific high voltage signals and enable self-powered sensing. Therefore, inspired by Miura-origami, we present an innovative origami power generator (OPG) constructed from only one piece of electret thin film. The Miura-origami architecture realizes a generator with excellent deformability and stretchability and makes it unnecessary for any auxiliary support structure during the compress-release cycle. Various parameters of the generator are intensively investigated, including the excitation accelerations, excitation displacements, numbers of power generation units and deformation degree of the device. When stimulated with 5.0 g acceleration at 15 Hz frequency, the generator with 8 generation units can obtain an instantaneous peak-to-peak voltage and a remarkable optimum peak power of 328 V and 2152 μW at 50 MΩ, respectively. In addition, the regulable shape and multiple generation modes of the device greatly improve its applicability in various vibration energy collection requirements. Based on the above results, a hexagonal electret generator integrated with six-phase OPGs is developed as a “Buoy on Sky,” after which the signal waveforms generated from internal power generators are recognized with 92% accuracy through a neural network algorithm that identifies the vibration conditions of transmission lines. This work demonstrates that a fusion of origami art and energy conversion techniques can achieve a multifunctional generator design satisfying the requirements for IoT applications.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a 14-year refined management system for the reduction of dispensing errors in a large-scale hospital outpatient pharmacy and to determine the effects of person-related and environment-related factors on the occurrence of dispensing errors. Methods: A retrospective study was performed. Data on dispensing errors, inventory and account management from 2008 to 2021 were collected from the electronic system and evaluated using the direct observation method and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. Results: The consistency of the inventory and accounts increased substantially (from 86.93 % to 99.75 %) with the implementation of the refined management program. From 2008 to 2021, the total number of dispensing errors was reduced by approximately 96.1 %. The number of dispensing errors in quantity and name was reduced by approximately 98.2 % and 95.07 %, respectively. A remarkable reduction in the error rate was achieved (from 0.014 % to 0.00002 %), and the rate of dispensing errors was significantly reduced (0.019 % vs. 0.0003 %, p

Iron ore tailings from iron ore mines pose environmental challenges. However, their reuse could provide significant environmental benefits. This study focused on producing clean concrete using iron ore tailings as crushed stone aggregate (IOTA) and calcium carbonate whiskers (CWs) as reinforcement. Five mixture groups were prepared: normal concrete (NAC) with natural crushed stone aggregate (NA), iron ore tailings concrete (TAC) with IOTA, and CW (10%, 20%, and 30%)-reinforced TAC (TAC-CW). Mechanical properties like the compressive strength (fcu) and splitting tensile strength (fst), as well as sulfate freeze–thaw (F-T) cycle resistance, were thoroughly investigated. Additionally, pore structure and microstructure were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results showed that IOTA’s complete replacement of NA decreased concrete mechanical properties and frost resistance, but incorporating CWs effectively compensated for these losses. Specifically, the fcu and fst of TAC-CW20 with 20% CWs increased by 23.26% and 49.6% compared to TAC and were higher than those of NAC. With increasing F-T cycles, concrete internal pore structure significantly deteriorated, and corrosive products increased significantly, which was further confirmed by SEM. TAC-CW20 significantly optimized pore structure. Overall, the successful application of iron ore tailings as eco-friendly materials enhanced concrete performance and reduced the environmental impact of construction activities.

Abstract At present, the clinicopathological features, optimal treatment patterns, and prognosis of breast metaplastic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are not fully understood and are still controversial. Here, we report a 56‐year‐old female patient with breast infiltrating ductal carcinoma with axillary lymph node metastasis of metaplastic SCC admitted to our hospital. Their homology was clarified by comparing the gene mutation results of the two lesions, that is, the axillary lymph node lesion was a metastasis of breast metaplastic SCC. We treated the patient with Poly ADP‐ribose Polymerase (PARP) inhibitors in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and found that she could achieve clinical benefit from the combination regimen. We reported a successful diagnosis and treatment of this rare refractory disease and reviewed the literature on the characteristics, pathogenesis, and advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast metaplastic SCC.

Background: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancers (HBOCs) pose significant health risks worldwide and are mitigated by prophylactic interventions. However, a meta-analysis of their efficacy and the impact of different genetic variants on their effectiveness is lacking. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, adhering to Cochrane guidelines. The review encompassed studies that involved prophylactic interventions for healthy women with BRCA variants, focusing on cancer incidence and mortality outcomes. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used for risk of bias assessment. We pooled the extracted outcomes using random effects models and conducted subgroup analyses stratified by intervention, variant, and cancer types. Results: A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that prophylactic interventions significantly reduced cancer risk and mortality. The subgroup analysis showed a greater protective effect for BRCA2 than BRCA1 variant carriers. Risk-reducing surgeries (RRS) were more effective than chemoprevention, with RRS notably reducing cancer risk by 56% compared to 39% for chemoprevention. Prophylactic oophorectomy significantly reduced HBOC risks, while the effect of prophylactic mastectomy and chemoprevention on mortality was less conclusive. Conclusions: Prophylactic interventions significantly reduce the risk of HBOC and associated mortality. This comprehensive analysis provides insights for future economic evaluations and clinical decision-making in HBOC interventions.

Through partially replacing Y element, Ce was added into near-equiatomic AlNiY medium-entropy amorphous alloy (denoted as MEAA) ribbons by the melt spinning process in this study. The differences of microstructure, thermal stability, hardness and corrosion resistance of Al33.3Ni33.3Y33.4-xCex (x = 0, 2, 5, 8, 13) alloy ribbons were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Vickers-type hardness tester. The anti-corrosion performance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution of alloy ribbons was investigated elaborately through the general potentiodynamic polarization curves (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results suggested that all ribbon samples could remain amorphous structure and the hardness are all above 510 HV0.1. With the increase of Ce content, the thermal stability begins to be gradually lower. However, according to the analysis of crystallization kinetics, all types of MEAA ribbons presents the relatively prominent thermal stability compared with traditional Al-based amorphous alloys. The corrosion current density raises firstly, then shows a decreasing trend, and has a slight increase at last. Therefore, appropriate content of Ce element can improve the corrosion protection performance of alloy ribbons and the 5 at.% Ce MEAA ribbons exhibited the excellent corrosion resistance in this study.

ObjectivesIn order to explore the influence of the free surface and free end on the flow field around typical bluff bodies, the flow field around a finite-length cylinder with a free surface is studied. MethodsBased on the delay detached-eddy simulation (DDES) approach and piecewise linear interface calculation (PLIC) method, our in-house solver naoe-FOAM-SJTU is adopted to carry out numerical simulations. ResultsThe results show that the existence of the free surface and free end increases the lift and drag of local positions, and delays the occurrence of flow separation on the cylinder's surface. Compared with the deep draft region, the recovery of streamwise velocity near the free surface is delayed, and the transverse velocity tends to move outward. The deformation of the free surface generates many small vortices, and the twisted vortex at the free end restrains the development of the Kármán vortex street to a certain extent. ConclusionsThis study shows that the current numerical methods can accurately capture this complex flow field. At the same time, the existence of the free surface and free end significantly changes the distribution of the flow field in the draft direction.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate whether histone deacetylase 4 S246/467/632A mutant (m-HDAC4) has enhanced function at histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) to attenuate cartilage degeneration in a rat model of osteoarthritis (OA). Methods Chondrocytes were infected with Ad-m-HDAC4-GFP or Ad-HDAC4-GFP for 24 h, incubated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β 10 ng/mL) for 24 h, and then measured by RT-qPCR. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 48) were randomly divided into four groups and transduced with different vectors: ACLT/Ad-GFP, ACLT/Ad-HDAC4-GFP, ACLT/Ad-m-HDAC4-GFP, and sham/Ad-GFP. All rats received intra-articular injections 48 h after the operation and every 3 weeks thereafter. Cartilage damage was assessed using radiography and Safranin O staining and quantified using the OARSI score. The hypertrophic and anabolic molecules were detected by immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR. Results M-HDAC4 decreased the expression levels of Runx-2, Mmp-13, and Col 10a1, but increased the levels of Col 2a1 and ACAN more effectively than HDAC4 in the IL-1β-induced chondrocyte OA model; upregulation of HDAC4 and m-HDAC4 in the rat OA model suppressed Runx-2 and MMP-13 production, and enhanced Col 2a1 and ACAN synthesis. Stronger Safranin O staining was detected in rats treated with m-HDAC4 than in those treated with HDAC4. The resulting OARSI scores were lower in the Ad-m-HDAC4 group (5.80 ± 0.45) than in the Ad-HDAC4 group (9.67 ± 1.83, P = 0.045). The OARSI scores were highest in rat knees that underwent ACLT treated with Ad-GFP control adenovirus vector (14.93 ± 2.14, P = 0.019 compared with Ad-HDAC4 group; P = 0.003 compared with Ad-m-HDAC4 group). Lower Runx-2 and MMP-13 production, and stronger Col 2a1 and ACAN synthesis were detected in rats treated with m-HDAC4 than in those treated with HDAC4. Conclusions M-HDAC4 repressed chondrocyte hypertrophy and induced chondrocyte anabolism in the nucleus. M-HDAC4 was more effective in attenuating articular cartilage damage than HDAC4.

Plant disease diagnosis in time can inhibit the spread of the disease and prevent a large-scale drop in production, which benefits food production. Object detection-based plant disease diagnosis methods have attracted widespread attention due to their accuracy in classifying and locating diseases. However, existing methods are still limited to single crop disease diagnosis. More importantly, the existing model has a large number of parameters, which is not conducive to deploying it to agricultural mobile devices. Nonetheless, reducing the number of model parameters tends to cause a decrease in model accuracy. To solve these problems, we propose a plant disease detection method based on knowledge distillation to achieve a lightweight and efficient diagnosis of multiple diseases across multiple crops. In detail, we design 2 strategies to build 4 different lightweight models as student models: the YOLOR-Light-v1, YOLOR-Light-v2, Mobile-YOLOR-v1, and Mobile-YOLOR-v2 models, and adopt the YOLOR model as the teacher model. We develop a multistage knowledge distillation method to improve lightweight model performance, achieving 60.4% mAP@ .5 in the PlantDoc dataset with small model parameters, outperforming existing methods. Overall, the multistage knowledge distillation technique can make the model lighter while maintaining high accuracy. Not only that, the technique can be extended to other tasks, such as image classification and image segmentation, to obtain automated plant disease diagnostic models with a wider range of lightweight applicability in smart agriculture. Background Breast cancer (BC) poses a serious threat to women worldwide. This research was designed to explore the association between the rs4784227 polymorphism of cancer susceptibility candidate gene 16 (CASC16) and BC susceptibility and prognosis, aiming to provide further information for the early detection of BC and to accelerate comprehensive cancer management. Methods A total of 1,733 subjects were recruited for this case-control study, of which 828 are BC patients and 905 are healthy individuals. The relevance between SNP rs4784227 and BC risk in diverse genetic models was analyzed by using the SNPStats analysis program and was assessed by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using the binary logistic regression model. Pearson’s χ2 test was used to determine the correlation between the polymorphism and clinical characteristics of BC patients. Additionally, univariate survival analysis was performed by the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test, and multivariate survival analysis was performed by Cox regression. Results SNP rs4784227 was significantly associated with susceptibility to BC in the dominant model (CT/TT versus CC, OR = 1.237, 95% CI = 1.012–1.513, P = 0.038). The minor allele of SNP rs4784227 was significantly linked to an increased risk of BC (OR = 1.197, 95% CI = 1.022–1.401, P = 0.026). In addition, the rs4784227 polymorphism of CASC16 was associated with perineural invasion (P = 0.030), menstrual status (P = 0.016) and histological grade (P = 0.001, P = 0.003, P = 0.025; respectively) of BC patients. There was no significant association between the genotypes of rs4784227 and disease-free survival (DFS) or overall survival (OS) of breast cancer patients (P > 0.05). Conclusions The rs4784227 polymorphism of CASC16 may affect susceptibility to breast cancer and is associated with perineural invasion, menstrual status and histological grade in BC patients. Additionally, our results could not confirm that this polymorphism was related to breast cancer prognosis.

PurposeIn order to compare the outcomes of percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) and open lumbar discectomy (OLD) for lumbar disc herniation (LDH).MethodsThe Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Sience, Embase, Clinicaltrials.gov, CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wangfang databases were searched from inception to April 30, 2022 to collect the published studies about PTED vs. OLD for treatment of LDH. The Revman 5.2 was used for data analysis. The primary outcomes were excellent rates, complication rates and reoperation rates. The secondary outcomes were length of incision, length of operation, length of hospital stay, and the amount of intraoperative blood loss.ResultsA total of nine studies were included, of which, eight randomized controlled trials and one retrospective study involving 1,679 patients with LDH (755 patients for PTED, and 924 patients for OLD) were included. According to meta-analysis, there were no significant difference in excellent rates (odds ratio [OR] = 1.47, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.94–2.28, P = 0.09), reoperation rates (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.50–1.84, P = 0.90), length of operation [standardized mean differences (SMD) = −17.97, 95%CI: −54.83–18.89, P = 0.34], and the amount of intraoperative blood loss (SMD = −128.05, 95%CI: −258.67–2.57, P = 0.05), respectively. Nitrate (NO3–) is not only an essential nutrient but also an important signaling molecule for plant growth. Low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops is causing increasingly serious environmental and ecological problems. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of NO3– regulation in crops is crucial for NUE improvement in agriculture. During the last several years, significant progress has been made in understanding the regulation of NO3– signaling in crops, and some key NO3– signaling factors have been shown to play important roles in NO3– utilization. However, no detailed reviews have yet summarized these advances. Here, we focus mainly on recent advances in crop NO3– signaling, including short-term signaling, long-term signaling, and the impact of environmental factors. We also review the regulation of crop NUE by crucial genes involved in NO3– signaling. This review provides useful information for further research on NO3– signaling in crops and a theoretical basis for breeding new crop varieties with high NUE, which has great significance for sustainable agriculture.

A series of physical model tests were performed to investigate the wave propagation, pressure, and wave overtopping processes for vertical and sloped seawalls on the reef flat. For both regular and irregular waves, the effects of incident wave height, wave period, relative distance, fore reef slope, and still-water depth on wave propagation, wave pressure distribution, and mean wave overtopping discharge were investigated. The peak pressure increased with the increase in incident wave height and decreased with the increase in relative distance and fore reef slope. The mean wave overtopping discharge over the vertical and sloped seawalls increased with the increase in incident wave height, wave period, and still-water depth, but it was significantly reduced with the increase in relative distance and fore reef slope. Modified empirical formulas are proposed for predicting the wave force and mean wave overtopping discharge over the vertical and sloped seawalls on the reef flat for both regular and irregular waves.

Vibration and noise-reduction materials are indispensable in various fields. Polyurethane (PU)-based damping materials can dissipate the external mechanical and acoustic energy through molecular chain movements to mitigate the adverse effects of vibrations and noise. In this study, PU-based damping composites were obtained by compositing PU rubber prepared using 3-methyltetrahydrofuran/tetrahydrofuran copolyether glycol, 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and trimethylolpropane monoallyl ether as raw materials with hindered phenol, viz., and 3,9-bis{2-[3-(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)proponyloxy]-1,1-dimethylethyl}-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane (AO-80). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and tensile tests were conducted to evaluate the properties of the resulting composites. The glass transition temperature of the composite increased from −40 to −23 °C, and the tan δMax of the PU rubber increased by 81%, from 0.86 to 1.56 when 30 phr of AO-80 was added. This study provides a new platform for the design and preparation of damping materials for industrial applications and daily life.

A series of numerical simulations of two-degree-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration of two coupled cylinders with unequal diameters are performed at the Reynolds number of 20,000. The effects of incident angle, spacing ratio, and diameter ratio on the VIV responses for two cylinders are investigated. It is shown that the lock-in range of the large cylinder is significantly widened and the maximum vibration amplitude decreases as a result of the existence of small cylinder. The mean drag coefficients and root mean square force coefficients of the large cylinder are not varied significantly with the incident angle and diameter ratio, but the force coefficients of the small cylinder vary considerably under different configurations. For the configuration of α = 0°, d/D = 0.05 and G/D = 0.05, the variations in vibration amplitude and frequency ratio are similar to those of the isolated cylinder. Different vortex shedding modes such as 2S mode, P+S mode, and 2P mode are observed for two coupled cylinders at different reduced velocities for different configurations.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted HIV prevention strategies globally. However, changes in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence and HIV-related behaviors, and their associations with medication adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) PrEP users remain unclear since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsA Retrospective Cohort Study of HIV-negative MSM PrEP users was conducted in four Chinese metropolises from December 2018 to March 2020, assessing the changes in PrEP adherence and HIV-related behaviors before and during the COVID-19. The primary outcome was poor PrEP adherence determined from self-reported missing at least one PrEP dose in the previous month. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine factors correlated with poor adherence during COVID-19.ResultsWe enrolled 791 eligible participants (418 [52.8%] in daily PrEP and 373 [47.2%] in event-driven PrEP). Compared with the data conducted before the COVID-19, the proportion of PrEP users decreased from 97.9 to 64.3%, and the proportion of poor PrEP adherence increased from 23.6 to 50.1% during the COVID-19 [odds ratio (OR) 3.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.62–4.02]. While the percentage of condomless anal intercourse (CAI) with regular partners (11.8 vs. 25.7%) and with casual partners (4.4 vs. 9.0%) both significantly increased. The proportion of those who were tested for HIV decreased from 50.1 to 25.9%. Factors correlated with poor PrEP adherence during the COVID-19 included not being tested for HIV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.38 [95% CI: 1.00, 1.91]), using condoms consistently with regular partners (vs. never, aOR = 2.19 [95% CI: 1.16, 4.13]), and being married or cohabitating with a woman (vs. not married, aOR = 3.08 [95% CI: 1.60, 5.95]).ConclusionsIncreased poor PrEP adherence and CAI along with the decrease in HIV testing can lead to an increase in HIV acquisition and drug resistance to PrEP. Targeted interventions are needed to improve PrEP adherence and HIV prevention strategies.

Breast cancer is a major killer of women’s health worldwide. While breast cancer is thought to have lower immunogenicity compared with other solid tumors, combination therapy is able to improve the immunogenicity of the tumor and sensitize breast cancer cells to immunotherapy. Immunotherapy represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has been largely explored in the field of breast cancer, including both early and advanced disease. Immunotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has been the most studied, and the PD-L1 inhibitor atezolizumab combined with nab-paclitaxel has been used in the first-line treatment of TNBC. Immunotherapeutic data for human epidermal growth factor receptor-positive and hormone receptor-positive breast cancer are also accumulating. This review summarizes the clinical trial data of ICIs or ICI-containing therapies in different types and stages of breast cancer.

Concrete is a kind of complex multiphase composite material, and the spatial distribution of each component of concrete is random, which has an impact on its physical and mechanical properties. This paper presents algorithms for generating two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) arbitrarily graded stochastic concrete aggregate models, graphical format conversion methods, and finite element applications. Aggregate shapes include circular, ellipsoidal, convex polygon, ellipsoidal, and spherical. These models take into account the randomness of appearance, position distribution, and particle size distribution, including the interface transition zone, and the aggregate content can reach a high level. An efficient interference algorithm of ellipsoidal aggregate is proposed, which can reasonably control the thickness of the mortar layer around the aggregate. The corresponding program is compiled by MATLAB to realize the generation of random mesoscopic concrete aggregate geometric model. A graphic format conversion method is provided, which greatly extends the applicability and generality of the random aggregation model. The usefulness of the method in this paper was verified by the mechanical analysis of random aggregate model specimens with different volume fractions and the chloride transport properties of different aggregate shape specimens. In addition, the results of the two cases show that the random aggregate geometry and aggregate content have a great impact on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete, and the randomness of the spatial distribution of aggregates makes the chloride ion transport path and the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of concrete be random. The results of this paper can provide an important research foundation for the study of mesoscopic physical and mechanical properties, gradation theory, and durability of concrete.

Underwater noise pollution, mainly emitted by shipping and ocean infrastructure development of human activities, has produced severe environmental impacts on marine species and seabed habitats. In recent years, a polyurethane-based (PU-based) composite with excellent damping performance has been increasingly utilized as underwater sound absorption material by attaching it to equipment surfaces. As one of the key parameters of damping materials, dynamic mechanical parameters are of vital importance to evaluating the viscoelastic damping property and thus influencing the sound absorption performance. Nevertheless, lots of researchers have not checked thoroughly the relationship and the mechanism of the material dynamic mechanical parameters and its sound absorption performance. In this work, a finite element model was fabricated and verified effectively using acoustic pulse tube tests to investigate the aforementioned issues. The influence of the dynamic mechanical parameters on underwater sound absorption performance was systematically studied with the frequency domain to reveal the mechanism and the relationship between damping properties and the sound absorption of the PU-based composite. The results indicate that the internal friction of the molecular segments and the structure stiffness were the two main contributors of the PU-based composite’s consumption of sound energy, and the sound absorption peak and the sound absorption coefficient could be clearly changed by adjusting the dynamic mechanical parameters of the composite. This study will provide helpful guidance to develop the fabrication and engineering applications of the PU-based composite with outstanding underwater sound absorption performance.

BackgroundHIV self-testing (HIVST) kits are common in key sexually active populations. Direct secondary distribution of HIVST kits (DSDHK) is effective in improving the uptake of HIVST. However, there are concerns about the various limitations of DSDHK, including limited geographic reach, payment problems, and need for face-to-face interactions. ObjectiveIn this study, we aim to evaluate the feasibility and characteristics of indirect secondary distribution of HIVST kits (ISDHK) via WeChat (distributing HIVST application links and follow-up HIVST kits to partners) among men who have sex with men (MSM). MethodsFrom October 2017 to September 2019, an HIVST recruitment advertisement was disseminated on the WeChat social media platform to invite MSM to apply for the HIVST kits (referred to as index participants [IPs]). All MSM participants were encouraged to distribute the HIVST application link to their friends and sexual partners (referred to as alters) through their social networks. All the alters were further encouraged to continue distributing the HIVST application link. All participants paid a deposit (US $7), which was refundable upon completion of the questionnaire, and uploaded the test results via a web-based survey system. ResultsA total of 2263 MSM met the criteria and successfully applied for HIVST. Of these, 1816 participants returned their HIVST results, including 1422 (88.3%) IPs and 394 (21.7%) alters. More alters had condomless anal intercourse, a higher proportion of them had never previously tested for HIV, and they showed a greater willingness to distribute HIVST kits to their sexual partners (P=.002) than the IPs. After controlling for age, education, and income, the alters had a greater proportion of MSM who had never tested for HIV before (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.29, 95% CI 1.00-1.68), were more willing to distribute the HIVST application link (aOR 1.71, 95% CI 1.21-2.40), had a lower number of sexual partners (aOR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57-0.90), and were less likely to search for sexual partners on the web (aOR 0.78, 95% CI 0.60-1.02) than IPs. In comparison, the rates of reactive HIVST results, conducting HIV confirmatory tests, HIV seropositivity, and initiation of HIV antiretroviral therapy were similar for IPs and alters. ConclusionsThe ISDHK model of distributing HIVST application links among the MSM population via social media is feasible. The ISDHK model should be used to supplement the DSDHK model to enable a greater proportion of the MSM population to know their HIV infection status.

Polysiloxanes have attracted considerable attention in biomedical engineering, owing to their inherent properties, including good flexibility and biocompatibility. However, their low mechanical strength limits their application scope. In this study, we synthesized a polysiloxane-based polyurethane by chemical copolymerization. A series of thermoplastic polysiloxane-polyurethanes (Si-TPUs) was synthesized using hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane containing two carbamate groups at the tail of the polymer chains 4,4′-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI) and 1,4-butanediol as raw materials. The effects of the hard-segment content and soft-segment number average molecular weight on the properties of the resulting TPUs were investigated. The prepared HMDI-based Si-TPUs exhibited good microphase separation, excellent mechanical properties, and acceptable repeatable processability. The tensile strength of SiTPU-2K-39 reached 21.5 MPa, which is significantly higher than that of other flexible polysiloxane materials. Moreover, the tensile strength and breaking elongation of SiTPU-2K-39 were maintained at 80.9% and 94.6%, respectively, after three cycles of regeneration. The Si-TPUs prepared in this work may potentially be used in gas separation, medical materials, antifouling coatings, and other applications.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic non-specific inflammatory bowel disease, which usually manifests as abdominal pain, diarrhea and hematochezia. The disease often recurs and is difficult to cure. At present, the pathogenesis is not clear, but it is believed that the disease is caused by a complex interaction among immunity, heredity, environment and intestinal microflora disorders. MicroRNA (miRNA) is endogenous single-stranded non-coding RNA of 17–25 nucleotides (nts). They target the 3'Untranslated Region of a target gene and inhibit or degrade the target gene according to the extent of complementary bases. As important gene expression regulators, miRNAs are involved in regulating the expression of most human genes, and play an important role in the pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases including UC. Studies in recent years have illustrated that abnormal expression of miRNA occurs very early in disease pathogenesis. Moreover, this abnormal expression is highly related to disease activity of UC and colitis-associated cancer, and involves virtually all key UC-related mechanisms, such as immunity and intestinal microbiota dysregulation. Recently, it was discovered that miRNA is highly stable outside the cell in the form of microvesicles, exosomes or apoptotic vesicles, which raises the possibility that miRNA may serve as a novel diagnostic marker for UC. In this review, we summarize the biosynthetic pathway and the function of miRNA, and summarize the usefulness of miRNA for diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of UC. Then, we described four types of miRNAs involved in regulating the mechanisms of UC occurrence and development: 1) miRNAs are involved in regulating immune cells; 2) affect the intestinal epithelial cells barrier; 3) regulate the homeostasis between gut microbiota and the host; and 4) participate in the formation of tumor in UC. Altogether, we aim to emphasize the close relationship between miRNA and UC as well as to propose that the field has value for developing potential biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets for UC.

BackgroundThe long noncoding RNA HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) is highly expressed in breast cancer (BC) tissues and is associated with the recurrence and metastasis of BC. Until now, the results of studies on associations between several functional single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) (rs920778, rs1899663, and rs4759314) in HOTAIR with BC susceptibility carried out in different regions of China are still inconsistent. There is no study on correlation between HOTAIR SNPs and prognosis of Chinese population. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between HOTAIR SNPs and susceptibility to and prognosis of BC.MethodWe conducted a population-based case-control study involving 828 BC cases and 905 healthy controls. Peripheral blood DNA was used for genotyping. The association between HOTAIR genotypes and BC risk were estimated by odds ratios (ORs) computed using the binary logistic regression model. The relationships between HOTAIR SNPs and clinicopathological features were tested by Pearson’s chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. Survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.ResultsThe functional rs920778 genetic variant increased BC risk in the codominant model. Individuals with the rs920778 GG genotype had an OR of 2.426 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.491–3.947, P < 0.001) for developing BC compared to individuals with the AA genotype. Individuals with the AG genotype had an OR of 1.296 (95% CI = 1.040–1.614, P = 0.021) for developing BC compared to individuals with the AA genotype. Individuals with the rs4759314 GA genotype had a lower BC risk than individuals with the rs4759314 AA/GG genotype (OR = 0.566, 95% CI = 0.398–0.803, P = 0.001). The rs1899663 genotype had no correlation with BC susceptibility. Haplotypes composed of rs920778–rs1899663 and rs920778–rs1899663–rs4759314 could increase BC risk (all P < 0.001). There were no statistically significant associations between HOTAIR SNPs and clinicopathological characteristics. The rs920778 GG/AG genotypes were associated with worse disease-free survival (DFS) (p = 0.012), and the rs4759314 GA genotype was associated with worse DFS and overall survival (OS) (p = 0.011).ConclusionHOTAIR SNPs(rs920778 and rs4759314) are significantly related to BC susceptibility and prognosis in the northeastern Chinese population, indicating the significance in the occurrence and development of BC.

Abstract The edge-terminated Au/Ni/β-Ga2O3 Schottky barrier diodes were fabricated by using argon implantation to form the high-resistivity layers at the periphery of the anode contacts. With the implantation energy of 50 keV and dose of 5 × 1014 cm−2 and 1 × 1016 cm−2, the reverse breakdown voltage increases from 209 to 252 and 451 V (the maximum up to 550 V) and the Baliga figure-of-merit (VBR 2/Ron) also increases from 25.7 to 30.2 and 61.6 MW cm−2, about 17.5% and 140% enhancement, respectively. According to the 2D simulation, the electric fields at the junction corner are smoothed out after argon implantation and the position of the maximum breakdown electric filed, 5.05 MV/cm, changes from the anode corner at the interface to the overlap corner just under the implantation region. The temperature dependence of the forward characteristics was also investigated.

The protective capability of fringing reefs against tsunami hazards has been reported in numerous post-disaster surveys. It is believed that global warming is changing the water level over the reef flat and reef surface roughness by sea-level rise and coral bleaching. For a better understanding of the influence of climate change on tsunami hazards over fringing reefs, this study utilized a shock-capturing Boussinesq wave model, FUNWAVE-TVD, to simulate the tsunami-like solitary wave propagation and run-up over fringing reefs. Calibrated and validated by the newly obtained experimental data, the present model with shock-capturing scheme, in which only the ratio of wave height to water depth is used to trigger wave breaking, shows reasonable prediction of solitary wave transformation and run-up height over sharply varying reef bathymetry. Numerical experiments were then carried out to investigate the effects of sea-level rise and degrading of the reef surface roughness on the solitary wave inundation distance and fluid force distribution in the inundation zone. Numerical results clearly demonstrate how tsunami hazards change within the inundation zone in response to higher water levels and lower reef roughness and suggest climate change, especially sea-level rise, will significantly increase tsunami hazards in the low-lying areas of the reef-lined coasts. Presented results are discussed for the effects of sea-level rise and coral bleaching on the solitary wave process and implications to further improve the resilience under the threat of climate change.

Magnetic alloy-C core-shell nanoparticles with tunable elemental components are highly expected for their controllable magnetic, catalytic, and electromagnetic properties, and high air stability. Here we present a simple one-step metal organic chemical vapor deposition for the synthesis of CoNi-C core-shell nanoparticles with tunable Co/Ni molar ratio. The as-synthesized nanoparticles have core sizes of 5–50 nm, shell thicknesses of ~5 nm, and tunable Co/Ni molar ratio determined by the molar ratio of Co(acac)3/Ni(acac)2 used in the precursor. The core-shell nanoparticles are very stable in ambient atmosphere at the temperature below 200 °C, and exhibit a slight oxidation in the temperature range of 200–400 °C. The core-shell nanoparticles with Co/Ni molar ratios of 1.27:1, 0.64:1, and 0.30:1 exhibit saturation magnetization values of 41, 31, and 24 emu/g, and coercivity values of 483, 346, and 362 Oe, respectively. It is demonstrated that the microwave absorption parameters of the as-synthesized nanoparticles can be tuned by the Co/Ni molar ratio, which provides a practical strategy to regulate the microwave absorption properties of nanostructured absorbers.

In this paper, we report on achieving the first high performance lateral $\beta $ -Ga2O3 Schottky barrier diode (SBD) on sapphire substrate via transferring $\beta $ -Ga2O3 nano-membrane channel from a low dislocation density bulk $\beta $ -Ga2O3 substrate. Non field-plated lateral SBDs with Schottky–Ohmic contact distance of 4, 6, 11, and $15 \mu$ m demonstrate a reverse breakdown voltage (BV) of 0.64, 0.85, 1.2, and 1.7 kV with on resistance ( $R_\text {on}$ ) of 47, 66, 91, and 190 $\omega \cdot $ mm, respectively. This lateral $R_{\text {on}, \text{sp}}$ ~ BV performance is comparable to that of vertical SBDs. Combining with 107 ~ 108 high temperature current on/off ratio, $\beta $ -Ga2O3 SBD shows its great promise for power rectifying once the $\beta $ -Ga2O3 drift layer epitaxial growth becomes more mature.

The present work focuses on the comparison of the numerical simulation of sheet/cloud cavitation with the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes and Large Eddy Simulation(RANS and LES) methods around NACA0012 hydrofoil in water flow. Three kinds of turbulence models—SST k-ω, modified SST k-ω, and Smagorinsky’s model—were used in this paper. The unstable sheet cavity and periodic shedding of the sheet/cloud cavitation were predicted, and the simulation results, namelycavitation shape, shedding frequency, and the lift and the drag coefficients of those three turbulence models, were analyzed and compared with each other. The numerical results above were basically in accordance with experimental ones. It was found that the modified SST k-ω and Smagorinsky turbulence models performed better in the aspects of cavitation shape, shedding frequency, and capturing the unsteady cavitation vortex cluster in the developing and shedding period of the cavitation at the cavitation number σ = 0.8. At a small angle of attack, the modified SST k-ω model was more accurate and practical than the other two models. However, at a large angle of attack, the Smagorinsky model of the LES method was able to give specific information in the cavitation flow field, which RANS method could not give. Further study showed that the vortex structure of the wing is the main cause of cavitation shedding.

The size of real nanoparticles (NPs) is polydisperse which can influence the electrical property of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). Here, we explored the percolated network of mixed NPs with different sizes (small NPs and big NPs) by adopting a molecular dynamics simulation. The simulated results reveal that the big NPs are adverse to building the percolated network compared to the small NPs. Thus, the percolation threshold becomes higher along with increasing the mixing ratio, which denotes the concentration ratio of big NPs to the total NPs. For a better understanding of it, the dispersion state and the number and the size of clusters are employed to analyze the percolated network, which can explain the percolation threshold well. Furthermore, by adopting the Sun’s theory (Macromolecules, 2009, 42, 459–463), small and big NPs exhibit a weak antagonistic effect in the simulation if their total concentration is fixed. On the one hand, the number of small NPs is larger than that of big NPs at the same concentration. In addition, one big NP can connect to more others than one small NP. These two contrast effects are responsible for it. Interestingly, the shear flow leads to more contact aggregation structure of NPs which is beneficial to build the new percolated networks. Especially, the big NPs play a more important role in forming the percolated network than small NPs. Consequently, the percolation threshold is reduced at a higher shear rate. In total, our research work provides a further understanding of how the mixed NPs with different sizes form the percolated network in polymer matrix.

To investigate the feature of turbulence developing behind the filter device in a current flow, the flow fields at intermediate downstream distance of an immersed grid in an open water channel are recorded using a two-dimensional (2D) Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The measurements on a series of vertical and horizontal sections are conducted to reveal the stream-wise evolution and depth diversity of grid turbulence in the free surface flow. Unlike the previous experiments by Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and Hot-Wire Anemometry (HWA), the integral scales and space-time correlations are estimated without using the Taylor hypothesis in this paper. The distributions of mean velocity, turbulence intensity and integral scale show the transition behavior of grid-generated flow from perturbations to fully merged homogenous turbulence. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity become more uniform with increasing distance. While the spatial divergence of integral scale becomes more pronounced as the flow structures develop downstream. The vertical distributions of flow parameters reveal the diversity of flow characteristics in the water depth direction influenced by free surface and the outer part of turbulence boundary layer (TBL) from the channel bottom. The applicability of the newly proposed two-order elliptic approximation model for the space-time correlations of the decaying grid turbulence in channel flow is verified at different positions. The calculated convection velocity for large-scale motion and sweep velocity for small-scale motion based on this model bring a new insight into the dynamic pattern of this type of flow.

Oxygen-containing functional groups tend to induce a strong interaction between solid adsorbents and iodine molecules, yet have not been systematically investigated. Herein, on the basis of a series of nitric acid-treated graphene oxide (GO) with different contents of oxygen functional groups for iodine adsorption, it was found that the iodine uptake capacity is proportionate to the oxygen content and the diversities of oxygen-containing groups. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results also suggest that oxygen-containing groups result in strong interactions between iodine molecules and the adsorbents through a covalent bond-forming process, among which -OH groups possess a higher adsorption energy averagely. Such theoretical and experimental work deepens our understanding of the effects of oxygen functional groups on iodine adsorption and provides novel ideas for future design and synthesis of high-performance solid adsorbents for radioactive iodine.

Through coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation, we have successfully designed the chemically cross-linked (fixed junction) and the slide-ring (SR) systems. Firstly, we examine the dynamic properties such as the mean-square displacement, the bond, and the end-to-end autocorrelation functions as a function of the cross-linking density, consistently pointing out that the SR system exhibits much lower mobility compared with the fixed junction one at the same cross-linking density. This is further validated by a relatively higher glass transition temperature for the SR system compared with that of the fixed junction one. Then, we calculated the effect of the cross-linking density on the stretch-recovery behavior for the SR and fixed junction systems. Although the chain orientation of the SR system is higher than that of the fixed-junction system, the tensile stress is smaller than the latter. We infer that much greater chain sliding can occur during the stretch, because the movable ring structure homogeneously sustains the external force of the SR system, which, therefore, leads to much larger permanent set and higher hysteresis during the recovery process compared with the fixed-junction one. Based on the stretch-recovery behavior for various cross-linking densities, we obtain the change of the hysteresis loss, which is larger for the SR system than that of the fixed junction system. Lastly, we note that the relatively bigger compressive stress for the SR system results from the aggregation of the rigid rings compared with the fixed junction system. In general, compared with the traditionally cross-linked system, a deep molecular-level insight into the slide-ring polymer network is offered and thus is believed to provide some guidance to the design and preparation of the slide-ring polymer network with both good mechanical and damping properties.

In response to the wide spread of microbial contamination induced by bacterial pathogens, the development of novel materials with excellent antibacterial activity is of great interest. In this study, novel antibacterial chitosan (CS) and polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHGC) dual-polymer-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) (GO-CS-PHGC) composites were designed and easily fabricated. The as-prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy. Their antibacterial capability towards bacterial strains was also studied by incubating both Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria in their presence. More significantly, the synergistic antibacterial action of the three components was assayed, and the findings implied that the as-prepared GO-CS-PHGC shows enhanced antibacterial activity when compared to its single components (GO, CS, PHGC or CS-PHGC) and the mixture of individual components. Not only Gram-negative bacteria but also Gram-positive bacteria are greatly inhibited by GO-CS-PHGC composites. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of GO-CS-PHGC against E. coli was 32 μg/mL.
