Using a rigid 3,5-di(2′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid, two porous 3D MOFs have been synthesized and characterized, and the luminescent properties have been studied.

Two novel Ni/Co-MOFs electrocatalysts were synthesized. Ni-MOF demonstrated a good activity in electrocatalytic OER performances and short-term electrochemical durability.

A bifunctional ligand strategy for modification of the functional pores is of great significance in the structural design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, a new 2-fold interpenetrated "pillared-layer" 3D Co-MOF, {[Co(HL)(4,4'-bipy)]·DMF·2H2O}n (1), was successfully synthesized by using two kinds of ligands, imidazolecarboxylic acid and pyridine. The metal-carboxylic layers are pillared by the 4,4'-bipy ligand, displaying a 3D framework with rectangular 3D channels (high BET surface of 190.9 m2 g-1 and maximum aperture of 3.9 A) that are decorated with abundant uncoordinated N and O atoms. 1 shows good water stability and thermal stability (320 °C). The proper pores and active sites endowed 1 with a selective adsorption of Congo red in aqueous solution. In addition, a high CO2 adsorption capacity and an excellent CO2 chemical conversion were observed.

Two new three-dimensional (3D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Cu2(L)(4,4′-bipy)(OH)]·H2O}n (1) and {[Mn3(L)2(4,4′-bipy)(DMA)2]·H2O}n (2), were constructed by a newly synthesized thioether carboxylic acid ligand 5-((formic acid-3-sulfur)methyl)isophthalic acid (H3L) and 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy). Thioether bonds in H3L can rotate freely in space, which are conducive in constructing MOFs with rich and stable structures. Simultaneously, the uncoordinated sulfur atoms affect the polarity of the framework and play an important role in adsorption. Gas adsorption results indicated that 1 can selectively adsorb CO2 from the mixture of CH4/CO2. Moreover, due to the high catalytic activity of [Cu4(COO)6N4O2] clusters, 1 is also an excellent recyclable catalyst that can chemically fix CO2 into cyclic carbonate under mild solvent-free conditions. Therefore, 1 may be explored as a dual-functional material for industrial adsorption and catalysis.

A new multi-functional metal–organic framework, {[Cu2(HL)(H2O)2]·NMP·2H2O}n (1), was assembled by employing an asymmetrical V-shaped rigid multicarboxylic acid ligand H5L (H5L = 2,4-di(2′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid) with Cu(II) ions. 1 possesses a 3D pore formed by two types of intersecting 1D cuboid channels. Moreover, owing to the abundant uncoordinated carboxylate O atoms decorated in the channels and open metal centers generated by the removal of coordinated water molecules, 1 exhibits a high CO2 adsorption capacity and significantly selective capture for CO2 over CH4. Hence, further research on the chemical fixation of CO2 is implemented, which reveals excellent heterogeneous catalytic activity. In addition, 1 displays particularly selective sorption towards the rhodamine B (RB) dye. Consequently, this study may provide a facile synthetic route for the construction of multi-functional materials.

Herein, we report a new 3D porous Co(II)-based metal–organic framework catalyst (Me2NH2)2[Co3(L)2(H2O)2]·2DMF (MOF I), which has been successfully prepared by using Co(II) ions and rigid V-shaped 3,5-di(2,4-dicarboxylphenyl)pyridine (H4L) via the solvothermal reaction. Structural analysis reveals that I displays a porous structure with the pore size of 16.2 × 7.2 A2 based on the trinuclear [Co3(COO)4(H2O)2N2] secondary building units (SBUs). Gas sorption experiments on the guest free sample I′ reveals a high capacity and selectivity to CO2 over CH4. And further, the catalytic explorations of the I′-catalyzed system (I′: 3 mol%; proline: 40 mol%; CH3CN: 2 mL) reveal that benzyl alcohols with different structures can be efficiently transformed into benzyl alcohols without by-products under mild conditions.

A novel two-dimensional coordination polymer with a negatively charged framework named {[(CH3)2NH2][Zn2(L)2]·DMF}n (1) was solvothermally synthesized via the assembly of Zn(II) ions with the organic ligand H3L (2-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-6-carboxyl-benzimidazole). 1 was characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, single-crystal, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. 1 possesses a 1D rectangle channel decorated by abundant uncoordinated imidazole N atoms and carboxylate O atoms, and is a better CO2 adsorbent and promising CO2/CH4 selective material, suggesting potential application in gas separation. Moreover, 1 can also serve as a multi-responsive sensing material for detecting nitrobenzene (NB) and Cr2O72−via a luminescence quenching effect with a low detection limit, and the mechanisms of the quenching effect and sensing properties of 1 are discussed in detail.

Four new water-stable luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Zn4(L)2(H2O)4(OH)2]·3NMP}n (1), {[Zn3(L)2(H2O)2]·Diox}n (2), {[Cd3(L)2 (H2O)5]·NMP·3H2O}n (3), and {[Pb3(L)2(NMP)2(H2O)]·H2O}n (4), (H3L = 5-(1-(carboxymethyl)pyrazol-3-yl)isophthalic acid; NMP = N-methyl-2-Pyrrolidoneand; Diox = 1,4-Dioxane) have been solvothermally synthesized with different solvents. The single crystal structures of 1–4 reveal that complexes 1 and 2 form the 2D (3,6)-connected kgd nets based on the tetranuclear [Zn4(μ1-COO)2(μ2-COO)4] clusters and trinuclear [Zn3(μ1-COO)2(μ2-COO)4] clusters, respectively. Complex 3 displays a 2D (3,6)-connected kgd net based on the trinuclear [Cd3(μ1-COO)4(μ2-COO)2] clusters. Complex 4 presents a 2D layer with a rod-shaped SBUs. The solid-state luminescence properties and water stability of these complexes were investigated carefully, showing that 1 displays high selectivity for Fe3+, CrO42−, and Cr2O72− via luminescence quenching effects with low detection limits. The probable quenching mechanisms have been studied in detail.

Six new coordination polymers (CPs), [Ni(L)(H₂O)₄]n (1), [Co(HL)₂(H₂O)₂]n (2), {[Cu(L)(H₂O)₃]·H₂O}n (3), [Mn(L)(H₂O)₂]n (4), [Cd(L)(H₂O)₂]n (5) and {[Zn₂(L)₂]·H₂O}n (6), have been solvothermally synthesized by employing imidazol-carboxyl bifunctional ligand 4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl) phthalic acid (H₂L). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that the L2-/HL- ligands display various coordination modes with different metal ions in 1-6. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructures and both present one-dimensional (1D) chain structures, while complexes 3-6 show the 2D layered structures. The magnetic properties of these complexes were investigated. Complexes 1 and 3 indicate the weak ferromagnetic interactions, while complexes 2 and 4 demonstrate the antiferromagnetic interactions. In addition, luminescence properties of 5 and 6 were measured and studied in detail.

Four isostructural lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) {[Ln(L)1.5(H2O)]·4H2O}n (1-Ln) (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, and Tb) have been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions with 2-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) terephthalic acid (H2L) and Ln(NO3)3·nH2O (n = 0, 6). 1-Ln shows a binodal (3,8)-connected three-dimensional framework that possesses a one-dimensional pore channel decorated with uncoordinated Lewis basic triazolyl sites. 1-Eu and 1-Tb exhibit bright red and green emissions with absolute quantum yields of 9.1% for 1-Eu and 53.3% for 1-Tb. The luminescence explorations demonstrated that 1-Tb exhibits high quenching efficiency and low detection limit for sensing Fe3+ and nitrobenzene. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity of the quenched 1-Tb samples was resumed after washing with ethanol, which shows highly selective and recyclable luminescence sensing for Fe3+ and nitrobenzene. Herein, three new luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Cd4(H3L)4(H2O)12]·2.5H2O}n (1), {[Cd(L)]·2.5H2O·3[H2N(Me)2]}n (2), and {[Cd2(L)(DMA)]·[H2N(Me)2]}n (3), were designed and successfully prepared via a solvothermal reaction using V-shaped rigid multicarboxylate 2,4-di(3′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid (H5L) and Cd(II) salts in various solvent systems. The structural analyses indicated that the H3L2−/L5− ligands took three different coordination fashions in 1–3; this resulted in a diversity of targeted MOFs. The solid-state luminescence properties of three MOFs were studied under ultraviolet light irradiation at ambient temperature, and 3 showed a high selectivity and sensitivity for nitrobenzene and Fe3+ because of the quenching effect. Thus, it could be a potential crystalline material for detecting these substances. The mechanisms of the quenching effect and sensing properties of 3 have been discussed in detail.

Seven new luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs), [Cd1.5(L)2(H2O)(NO3)]n (1), [Cd(L)2(H2O)2]n (2), [Pb(L)(H2O)2(NO3)]n (3), [Pb(L)2(H2O)]n (4), [Zn(L)2(H2O)4]n (5), [Zn2(L)(btc)(H2O)2]n (6) and {[Zn(L)(p-bdc)0.5(H2O)](p-H2bdc)0.5}n (7), were assembled employing 5-(triazol-1-yl)nicotinic acid (HL) with Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions, revealing versatile frameworks as well as various types of coordination modes of HL. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal the different dimensionalities (0D, 1D, 2D or 3D) of complexes 1–7. Complex 1 displays a 3D dense-packing structure with a 3-nodal 3,4,6-connected net with a symbol of {4·64·8}2{4·2·64·89}{62·8}2. Complex 2 presents a 2D layered structure with a uninodal 4-connected sql net with a symbol of (44·62). Complex 3 shows a 1D chain based on [Pb2(COO)2(H2O)4(NO3)2N2] secondary building units (SBUs) and 4 exhibits a 1D dimeric chain. Complex 5 is a 0D structure. Complexes 6 and 7 display 2D layered structures based on binuclear [Zn2(COO)4(H2O)2N2] SBUs, which are designated as a 4-nodal 3,3,3,6-connected net with a symbol of {4·62}2{42·610·83}{63}4 and a 4-connected sql net, respectively. Further, the solid-state luminescence properties of the complexes were measured at room temperature. Meanwhile, 2 shows high selectivity and sensitivity for CrO42−, Cr2O72− and MnO4− ions by luminescence quenching effect with low detection limits, and the mechanisms of the quenching effect are discussed in detail.

Herein, three new solvents induced metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn(H2L)H2O] (1), [Zn2(L)H2O] (2) and [Zn3(HL)2]·(CH3CN)2 (3) were synthesized via the solvothermal reaction procedure by using a rigid v-shaped 3,5-di (2,4-dicarboxylphenyl)pyridine (H4L) and Zn(II) ions. Structural analyses show that the organic ligand H4L adopt various degrees deprotonation (H2L2− for 1; L4− for 2 and HL3− for 3), which obtain different structures for three new MOFs: 2D layer network for 1; 3D dense packing structure for 2 and 3D porous structure with the pore size of 10.3 ​× ​10.6 ​A2 for 3. The gas sorption behavior of the guest-free phase 3’ shows an ultra-high adsorption selectivity and affinity for CO2 over CH4. The experiment results provide us with a reasonable facile route for designing and synthesizing new potential gas sorption and separate materials in CO2 purification. And the solid-state luminescence properties of 1–3 were measured and studied intensively at room temperature.

By using a symmetrical V-shaped rigid 5′-carboxyl-(1,1′-3′,1′′-terphenyl)-4,4′′-dicarboxylic acid (H3L), three Cd(II)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cd3(L)2(H2O)4]·DMF (1), [Cd2(L)(SO4)2]·3(Me)2NH2 (2) and [Cd(HL)(H2O)]·0.5H2O (3), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Due to the reactions in different solvent systems, L3−/HL2− in 1–3 show different coordination modes with Cd(II) ions to form various secondary building units (SBUs) in the final structures. The desolvated structure of 1 (1a) contains two shapes of 1D channels with suitable pore sizes. 2 is a 3D dense packing pattern with a three nodal (5,6,7)-connected new topological net, and 3 is a 2D layered (4,4)-connected sql network connected with partly deprotonated HL2− ligands. As a result, 1a possesses not only high CO2 loading but also excellent CO2/CH4 selectivity. In addition, all complexes display solid-state luminescence stemming from ligand-to-metal charge transfer.

Four novel coordination polymers, namely, [Co(L1)Cl(H2O)]n (1), [Mn(L1)Cl(H2O)]n·nH2O (2), [Co3(L2)2(H2O)2]n·nCH3CN·nH2O (3), [Mn3(L2)2(H2O)12]n·1.5nH2O (4) were solvothermally constructed by two N-heterocyclic carboxylate bifunctional ligands, 1-(4-carboxylphenyl)-3-(prazin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (HL1) and 5-(2,3-dicarboxylphenoxy)nicotic acid (H3L2). Compounds 1, 2 and 4 exhibit 1D loop chain, and 3 displays a 2D framework based on the [Co3(COO)4] SBUs with a (4,8)-connected new topology with the point symbol of (418·610)(45·6)2. Magnetic studies show that compounds 1, 3 and 4 exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior.

Four novel coordination polymers, namely, [Zn3 (L1)2(H2O)2]n·n (CH3CN)·n (H2O) (1), [Cd3 (L1)2(H2O)4]n (2), [Cd3 (L2)2Cl(H2O)2]n·n (H3O) (3), [Pb(HL2)]n (4) were solvothermally synthesized based on isomeric N-heterocyclic multicarboxylate ligands (H3L1 ​= ​5-(2,3-dicarboxylphenoxy)nicotinic acid, H3L2 ​= ​5-(3,4-dicarboxylphenoxy)nicotinic acid). Compound 1 is a 2D layer framework with a (4,8)-connected new topology with the point symbol of (418·610) (45·6)2 based on the [Zn3(COO)4] SBUs (Secondly Building Units). Compound 2 displays a 3D topological network with the point symbol of (3·42·53) (35·46·59·68) and possess the uncommon trinuclear [Cd3 (μ2-H2O) (COO)2] SBUs. Compound 3 shows an interesting (4,4,8)-connected 3D network based on the [Cd3(COO)3] SBUs with the point symbol of (414·613·8) (44·62) (45·6). Compound 4 has the [Pb2(COO)2] SBUs and further spreaded by (HL2)2- to give rise to 2D structure with the uncommon (4,8)-connected sqc169 topology with the point symbol of (412·612·84). H3L1 in 1, 2 and H3L2 in 3, 4 show different coordination modes, respectively, and are found easy to form various metal clusters (secondary building units, SBUs) in final structures. Meanwhile, the solid state luminescence properties of compounds 1–4 were studied at room temperature, and compound 1 showed the high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu2+ ion by a luminescence quenching effect, while 3 can detect nitrobenzene with high selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, the mechanisms for the luminescence quenching of 1 and 3 have been further studied.

Two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cd4(L1)2(H2O)4]·3(H2O)·DMA (1) and (Me2NH2)2[Cd2(L1)(L2)]·[solvent] (2) (DMA ​= ​N,N-Dimethylacetamide) were successfully synthesized via the solvothermal reaction procedure by a rigid V-shaped N-heterocyclic 2,6-di(2′,5′-dicarboxylatephenyl)pyridine (H4L1) ligand, terephthalic acid (H2L2) and Cd(II) ions in this work. Structural analyses show that the carboxylate groups of L14− adopt different coordination modes with Cd(II) ions in 1 and 2, which form the different secondary building units (SBUs) to yield two new different 3D MOFs. Compared with 1, the introduction of the terephthalic acid (H2L2) produces 2 with potential solvent area volume 51.9% (2608.5 ​A3, per unit cell volume 5029.2 ​A3). The gas sorption and luminescent experiments of 2 show the high selectivity of CO2 over CH4 and selective sensitivity for Fe3+ and Cr2O72− ions in aqueous solution. The experiment results offer a facile route for designing and yielding new potential multi-functional MOF materials in gas sorption and detecting Fe3+ and Cr2O72− ions.

In this report, seven new luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs), [Zn(L)0.5(H2O)2]·H2O (1), [Zn(L)0.5(DMF)] (2), [Zn3(L)(μ3-OH)2(H2O)4] (3), [Zn2(L)(DMA)(H2O)]·5(H2O) (4), [Cd(L)]·2(H3O)·(H2O) (5), [Cd2(L)(H2O)3] (6), and [Pb(L)0.5(H2O)] (7) (H4L = [1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-2′,3,3′′,5′-tetracarboxylic acid; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide; DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) have been solvothermally synthesized by using Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) ions and H4L in different solvent systems, all of which have been routinely characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses show the different dimensionalities (1D, 2D or 3D) of complexes 1–7. Comparative structural studies of 1–7 reveal that the L4− ligands adopt different coordination morphologies: 1 (η1μ1χ1), 2 (η2μ2χ2), 3 (η2μ2χ2), 4 (η2μ2χ2; η1μ1χ1), 5 (η2μ1χ2), 6 (η2μ2χ2; η2μ2χ3), and 7 (η2μ2χ2; η2μ3χ4) with Zn(II) (74 pm), Cd(II) (97 pm) and Pb(II) (119 pm) in different solvent systems, which produce the complexes with different frameworks. Complex 1 displays a 1D dimeric chain. Complexes 2 and 5 present a 2D layer structure with a uninodal 4-connected sql net with a symbol of (44·62). Complexes 3, 6 and 7 have a 3D dense packing structure based on infinite 1D rod-like secondary building units (SBUs). Complex 3 is designated as a binodal (4, 6)-connected fry topological net with the point symbol (510·63·78)(54·62). The whole network of 6 can be simplified as a binodal (4, 8)-connected flu topological net with a point symbol of (412·612·84)(46)2. Complex 7 can be seen as a new binodal (5, 10)-connected topological net with the point symbol (410)2(428·616·8). Complex 4 shows a 3D framework based on a binuclear [Zn2(CO)3O3] SBU, which can be viewed as a uninodal 4-connected sra topological net with the point symbol (42·63·8). Further, the solid-state luminescence properties of the complexes were measured and studied intensively at room temperature.

Meanwhile, 1 shows high selectivity and sensitivity for not only Fe3+ cations but also for CrO42−, Cr2O72− and MnO4− anions via a luminescence quenching effect with a low detection limit, which thus means that it could be a potential crystalline material for detecting these anions. The mechanisms of the quenching effect and sensing properties of 1 are discussed in detail. In addition, 3 and 4 have the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions.

Four super water-stable isostructural lanthanide-organic frameworks, [Ln(HL)(H2O)2]n·2H2O (1-Ln) (Ln = Eu, Tb, Nd and Sm), have been successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions with 3,5-di(2,4-dicarboxylphenyl)pyridine (H4L) and Ln(NO3)3·6H2O. 1-Ln shows a novel 2D layered structure with uncoordinated carboxylic and pyridyl groups pointing to the interior of interlayer channels. The luminescent properties of 1-Eu in the solid state and one steeped in aqueous solution have been measured, which show excellent luminescence and good luminescent stability in water. Next 1-Eu was chosen as a probe for sensing different metal ions. Consequently, 1-Eu exhibits a highly selective response to Fe(3+) through the luminescence quenching effect in aqueous solutions. The probable mechanisms of the quenching effects have been investigated in detail.

Two new three-dimensional (3D) porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Cd2(L)(NMP)(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (1) and {[Zn(L)0.5(H2O)]·NMP·H2O}n (2), have been solvothermally synthesized by using Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) ions with H4L (H4L = 1,4-di(5,6-bicarboxylbenzimidazol-lylmethyl)benzene) in different ratios of H2O and NMP (NMP = 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone) solvents, all of which have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As revealed by structural analysis, the H4L ligand took different coordination fashions in 1 and 2, and as a result, two MOFs with a novel (3,4,7)-connected trinodal net and (3,6)-connected binodal net were obtained, respectively. The structure comparison reveals that the coordination modes of ligands and the types of metal ions play decisive roles in regulating the final networks of MOFs. The desolvated frameworks 1 and 2 possess polar channels decorated with uncoordinated carboxylate groups, leading to an excellent ability to attract CO2 as well as significant adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 at 273 and 298 K. Solid state 1 and 2 show blue photoluminescence.

Six new complexes based on 5-(triazol-1-yl)nicotinic acid (HL), namely [Cu2(L)3(H2O)(OH)]n (1), [Co(L)2(H2O)2]n (2), [Mn(L)2(H2O)2]n (3), {[Co(L)(H2O)0.5(DMF)0.5(NO3)0.5]·(Cl)0.5·DMF·2H2O}n (4), {[Cu(L)(O)0.5]·CH3OH·2.5H2O}n (5) and {[Co2(L)4(H2O)]·2DMA·2H2O}n (6), were synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions. The L- ligand in 1-6 reveals various coordination modes and forms diverse secondary building units (SBUs) in the final structures. Complex 1 shows a 2D layered structure with a rare (3,8)-connected topology based on tetranuclear [Cu4(COO)6(H2O)2(OH)2N6] SBUs. 2 and 3 are isostructural and display 2D 4-connected sql nets with a point symbol of (44·62). 4 and 5 have similar spatial 3D porous frameworks, which can be simplified as a (3,6)-connected 2-nodal net via dinuclear [Co2(COO)2(O)2(NO3)(N)4] SBUs and [Cu2(COO)2(O)(N)4] SBUs, respectively. 6 is a 3D porous framework constructed by dinuclear [Co2(COO)4(H2O)(N)4] motifs with a uninodal 4-connected qtz net. The magnetic properties and gas sorption behaviour of these complexes were investigated carefully, showing that 3 exhibits ferrimagnetic character and 4 demonstrates its effective storage capacity for CO2 as well as high selectivity for CO2 over CH4 under ambient conditions.

Seven new complexes based on 4-(3-carboxyl-1,2,4-1H-triazol-1-yl)benzoic acid (H2L), namely [Zn(L)(H2O)2]n (1), [Cd(L)(H2O)2]n (2), [Pb(HL)2]n (3), [Pb(L)(H2O)]n (4), [Cu(L)(H2O)2]n (5), [Co(L)(H2O)2]n (6) and [Mn(L)(H2O)2]n (7), were synthesized by employing different center metal ions and a imidazol-carboxyl bifunctional ligand (H2L) under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions. The L2−/HL− ligand in 1–7 adopts different coordination modes and generates diverse 1D or 2D structures. The luminescent and magnetic properties of seven complexes were investigated in detail. Moreover, complex 1 shows high selectivity for Fe3+, Cr2O72− and MnO4− ions, indicating that 1 can be an excellent candidate for luminescence sensing. In addition, complexes 5, 6 and 7 demonstrate antiferromagnetic interactions.
