Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an anger management program on anger, job stress, psychological well-being, and heart rate variability in clinical nurses. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a nonequivalent control group, pre–post test design with repeated measures. The participants included 43 nurses assigned to the experimental and control groups. Anger, job stress, psychological well-being, and heart rate variability were evaluated before the intervention, immediately after the completion of the intervention, and four weeks after the end of the intervention. Chi-square test, t-test, Fisher’s exact test, and GEE (Generalized Estimating Equations) were used to analyze the data. Results There were significant differences in the level of anger, state anger, job stress, and psychological well-being between the two groups. The rate of change in the total power (TP) and the high-frequency band (HF) of the experimental group increased immediately after the intervention completion, but that of the control group decreased at the same time. Conclusion The above results demonstrate that an anger management program for nurses effectively attenuated anger and job stress, improved psychological well-being, and regulated heart rate variability.

Background After radical cystectomy, many bladder cancer patients experience physical and psychological difficulties. For nurses, understanding the illness experiences should be the utmost priority. Objective The aim of this study was to comprehensively understand the experiences of illness among bladder cancer patients with radical cystectomy in Korea. Methods Purposive sampling was used in this qualitative study to recruit patients hospitalized with bladder cancer at the urology cancer center in South Korea. Data were collected through one-on-one in-depth interviews and analyzed using the thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke. Results Six themes were derived: "confusion with bodily changes," "loss of daily life as it was before radical cystectomy," "feeling daunted," "body acceptance," "adaptation," and "feeling grateful for life." These themes represent the emotional state and adaptation process after surgery. Conclusions This study contributes to the understanding of the experience of illness in Korean adults experiencing bladder cancer. Whereas most previous research focuses on physical aspects, including treatment methods, this study focused on understanding the life and suffering after discharge of individuals. This study can help nurses to better understand the postoperative life of the patients. Implications for practice This study can be a foundation for developing informational materials or intervention programs needed to solve the difficulties encountered during urostomy or neobladder self-care. Specifically, a strategy has to be devised to alleviate the pain of loss and to help patients who feel daunted and experience a negative body image.

Purpose: This descriptive investigative study was done to identify health literacy, knowledge and self-care behavior of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.Methods: The patients were 206 adults over the age of 19 who were diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, taking anti-tuberculosis drugs and receiving care at one of the following: health centers, health center branches, public or privately affiliated hospitals in six cities nationwide. Tools used for the study were health literacy, knowledge and self-care behavior scales regarding pulmonary tuberculosis. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 to identify frequency and percentages, means and standard deviation using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple-regression analysis.Results: Health literacy in pulmonary tuberculosis patients was found to be lower for men, patients over 60, high school graduation or less, having no religion and no family members living together. For knowledge on tuberculosis, the tuberculosis symptom field was lowest, and self-care behavior was lowest for examinations and drug intake. Factors affecting self-care behavior were knowledge related to tuberculosis prevention examinations, education, health literacy, and living together with family members.Conclusion: In order to completely cure pulmonary tuberculosis and prevent recurrence, customized education is needed according to the patient’s educational background or health literacy, and assertive countermeasures are needed to enhance self-care behavior for examinations and drug intake.

The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effects of perceived health status (PHS) and perceived organizational support (POS) in the association between emotional labor and burnout in public health nurses (PHNs). The participants were 207 PHNs convenience sampled from 30 public health centers and offices in Jeju, Korea. Data regarding emotional labor, PHS, POS, and burnout were collected between February and March 2021 using a structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Burnout of PHNs was positively correlated with emotional labor (r = 0.64, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with PHS (r = −0.51, p < 0.001) and POS (r = −0.51, p < 0.001). In the association between emotional labor and burnout, PHS (B = −1.36, p < 0.001) and POS (B = −0.42, p = 0.001) had a partial mediating effect. Reduction of burnout among PHNs requires not only effective management of emotional labor but also personal and organizational efforts to improve PHS and POS.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of an advanced practice nurse-led psychoeducational program on distress, anxiety, depression, coping with cancer (CWC), health promotion behavior (HPB), and quality of life (QOL) among colorectal cancer survivors.This study was designed as a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest. The participants were survivors of colorectal cancer who underwent follow-up care. There were 39 survivors: 19 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group. The experimental group performed a psychoeducational program for 120 minutes per session, once a week for a total of six weeks, while the control group received routine education and counseling. Distress, anxiety, depression, CWC, HPB, and QOL were investigated before, immediately after, and 4 weeks after the intervention. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN ver. 24.0, using repeated measures ANOVA.There were significant interactions between time and group for distress and anxiety. In addition, CWC interacted with the total of CWC and interpersonal coping, and QOL interacted with the total of QOL and functional status. However, there were no significant differences in the depression or HPB scores.Based on the results of this study, we expect that this program can be used as an effective intervention for colorectal cancer survivors.

Summary Purpose There is an increasing number of colorectal cancer survivors in South Korea. However, no research has identified supportive care needs of survivors of colorectal cancer in South Korea. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the level of supportive care needs and effects of emotional state and quality of life (QoL) on supportive care needs of colorectal cancer survivors. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 survivors of colorectal cancer in South Korean who had primary treatment of surgery for colorectal cancer. Data were collected from April to September 2016. Participants responded to self-reported questionnaires assessing supportive care needs, emotional state (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and QoL (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal scale). Results The overall score of supportive care needs for colorectal cancer survivors was 1.22 ± 0.61 (full score: 3 points), with health care staff and social support needs garnering highest scores. Approximately, 20.0% and 21.7% of patients had anxiety and depression, respectively. The mean QoL score was 2.90 ± 0.53, with social and family status having the lowest QoL score. Multiple regression analysis showed that both the period after treatment and anxiety significantly influenced supportive care needs. Conclusion Appropriate interventions should be used immediately after completion of treatment to help reduce anxiety and meet supportive care needs of colorectal cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the second most prevalent malignancy among Korean women. Changes in lifestyle during and after remission of breast cancer tend to increase abdominal visceral fat, leading to increased risks of metabolic syndrome and chronic diseases. PURPOSE This cross-sectional study examined the differences in metabolic syndrome risk factors and health-related behaviors between abdominally obese and nonabdominally obese groups of Korean patients with breast cancer. METHODS The participants were assigned to nonabdominal obesity (waist circumference < 85 cm, n = 77) and abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥ 85 cm, n = 59) groups, and a questionnaire was used to assess the prevalence of risk factors of metabolic syndrome and health-related behaviors in each. The chi-square test and t test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The average age was 54.2 years in the abdominal obesity group and 51.3 years in the nonabdominal obesity group. The average blood pressure and fasting blood glucose levels were higher in the abdominal obesity than the nonabdominal obesity group (117.3/76.3 vs. 108.9/70.4 mmHg, respectively [p = .001]; 96.9 and 90.1 mg/dl, respectively [p = .007]). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in the abdominal obesity than the nonabdominal obesity group (55.4 and 62.5 mg/dl, respectively [p = .005]), whereas triglycerides were higher in the abdominal obesity than the nonabdominal obesity group (151.6 and 111.3 mg/dl, respectively [p = .006]). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the abdominal obesity and nonabdominal obesity groups were 42.4% and 9.1%, respectively (p = .001). Moreover, eating habits differed between the two groups, with the frequency of vegetable consumption lower in the abdominal obesity than the nonabdominal obesity group (p = .040) and the frequencies of salty and sweet food consumption and of overeating higher in the abdominal obesity than the nonabdominal obesity group. The percentage of participants who exercised for 30 minutes three times per week was 52.5% in the abdominal obesity group and 71.4% in the nonabdominal obesity group (p = .024). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This observational study found more metabolic syndrome risk factors in the abdominal obesity group than the nonabdominal obesity group. Consumption of sweet foods and overeating were higher and the frequencies of vegetable intake and exercise were lower in the abdominal obesity group. These findings suggest that female abdominally obese patients with breast cancer exhibit health-related behaviors that require improvement and better management. Interventional programs should be developed based on the findings of this study to reduce cancer recurrence and mortality in patients with breast cancer.

The present study is a descriptive survey conducted to identify factors influencing supportive care needs of patients with multiple myeloma treated with chemotherapy. A structured questionnaire was provided to 141 patients with multiple myeloma who were treated as inpatients or outpatients at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital of the Catholic University of Korea. Data were analyzed with t test, ANOVA, Scheffe’s test, correlational analysis, and linear regression analysis using SPSS version 21.0. The mean score of supportive care needs of patients with multiple myeloma was 1.51 out of 4 points. Of supportive care needs, information on future disease outcome scored the highest, with a mean score of 2.12, followed by easy and candid explanation by health care staff (2.11), and information on foods that are healthy for cancer patients (2.02). The mean score of disease-related knowledge was 0.52 of 1 point, and diagnostic test results scored the lowest among the subdomains of disease-related knowledge. The mean score of emotional state was 1.13 out of 3 points, mean anxiety score was 1.01 out of 3 points, and mean depression score was 1.26 out of 3 points. Anxiety and depression were identified as factors influencing supportive care needs of patients with multiple myeloma. The present study demonstrated that the supportive care needs of patients with multiple myeloma are associated with their emotional state. The supportive care needs of patients with multiple myeloma should be identified at an individual level, and should be addressed to reduce anxiety and depression.

Background: Hypophosphatemia is common during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in critically ill patients and can cause generalized muscle weakness, prolonged respiratory failure, and myocardial dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of adding phosphate to the dialysate and replacement solutions to treat hypophosphatemia occurring in intensive CRRT in critically ill patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 73 patients treated with intensive CRRT (effluent flow ≥35 ml/kg/hr) in the intensive care unit. The control group (group 1, n = 22) received no phosphate supplementation. The treatment groups received dialysate and replacement solution phosphate supplementation at 2.0 mmol/L (group 2, n = 26) or 3.0 mmol/L (group 3, n = 25). Results: The CRRT-induced hypophosphatemia incidence was 59.0%. Correction of hypophosphatemia with phosphate supplementation changed the mean serum phosphorus levels to 1.24 ± 0.37 and 1.44 ± 0.31 mmol/L in groups 2 and 3, respectively (p = .02). The time required for correction was 1.65 ± 0.80 and 1.39 ± 1.43 days for groups 2 and 3, respectively and was significantly longer in group 2 (p = .02). After supplementation, hypophosphatemia, and hyperphosphatemia both occurred in 7% of group 2. Group 3 developed no hypophosphatemia, but 20% developed hyperphosphatemia. The serum phosphate levels in hyperphosphatemia cases returned to normal within 2.0 days (group 2) and 1.0 day (group 3) after stopping phosphate supplementation. Conclusion: Phosphate supplementation effectively corrected CRRT-induced hypophosphatemia in critically ill patients with an acute kidney injury. The use of 2 mmol/L phosphate is appropriate in patients with CRRT-induced hypophosphatemia, but a different concentration could be required to prevent hypophosphatemia at the start of CRRT.

With industrialization, increasing workforce participation of women, and advances in information and communications technology, South Korean society is experiencing conflict and confusion regarding sexual ethics. We investigated the relationships among sexual discrimination, attitudes toward sexual health, and consciousness of biomedical ethics with a sample of 142 Korean adults in Seoul, South Korea. Men exhibited greater sexual discrimination than did women. Consciousness of biomedical ethics was higher in those with religious faith and married individuals, those with a higher level of education, individuals in paid employment, and those with firmly held ethical values, than in people without these characteristics. Finally, consciousness of biomedical ethics was higher in individuals with a more positive attitude toward sexual health. On the basis of these results, we proposed the development of a sex education program in South Korea to encourage gender-equality awareness, strengthen sound attitudes toward sexual health, and increase consciousness of biomedical ethics.

Background Breast cancer patients fear the relapse of their disease and subsequent death the most. Dying Well Education Program, a death education program, was offered for breast cancer patients to help them to reflect on the meanings of life and death. Purpose This study evaluated the effects of a death education on fear of death, anxiety and depression, hope, and spiritual well-being among breast cancer patients. Methods Twenty-three women with breast cancer at a university hospital in South Korea who received Dying Well Education Program, once a week for 10weeks, were compared with 25 participants in a control group who received the treatment as usual. Results Participants in the experimental group were satisfied with the program and showed a decreased level of fear of death, and increased levels of hope and spiritual well-being when compared to the control group. The anxiety and depression scores for both experimental and control groups were initially within normal ranges before the program and further decreased over time. Conclusion This study confirmed that a properly designed death education program could serve as a means of increasing breast cancer patients' hope and spiritual well-being.

Purpose We conducted a descriptive study to identify the symptoms, emotional status, and quality of life experienced by hospitalized ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and influencing the factors of symptom clusters on their quality of life. Methods A total of 192 patients who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and received adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery more than once from 2 university hospitals with over 800 beds located in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas of South Korea were included in this study. Using a structured questionnaire, the symptoms, emotional status, and quality of life by these patients were investigated from May 2012 to June 2013. Results We identified the following 7 symptom clusters among ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: psychological distress, fatigue-pain, abdominal discomfort, flu-like symptoms, fluid accumulation, and peripheral neuropathy. Patients with a high level of anxiety or depression experienced all symptoms at a higher level, and the 7 symptom clusters influenced all aspects of the patients’ quality of life. Conclusions This study provides to need interventions for the quality of life of ovarian cancer patients need to include the management of not only the physical symptoms and treatment-related side effects, but also the changes in their emotional status and daily lives.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the disease-related knowledge, stress and quality of life for the patients with varicose veins. Methods: Data were collected via questionnaire from 138 patients with varicose veins in C University Hospital in Korea from November in Korea 2012 to August 2013. Results: Knowledge of the symptoms and diagnosis was the lowest. The scores from patients with disease-related knowledge tended to be low for both subjects over the age of 60 and subjects with low education (less than high school). The score for stress over complications was the highest. The level of stress is higher for women, subjects without spouses, subjects with higher severity of disease and patients who had been taking hormones in the past or are still taking hormones. The disease-related quality of life tended to be lower for women and subjects without spouses. 21% of the variance in quality of life was explained by the level of disease-related stress, disease severity and knowledge. Conclusion: Education and the management of nurses to improve disease-related knowledge for patients with varicose veins is highly recommended. Intervention, by reducing stress, is necessary to improve the quality of life for women, subjects without spouses, and subjects with higher severity of the disease.

Background Effective communication between family and clinicians has been identified as one of the most important factors in end-of-life care. Family members’ perception of communication quality with clinicians may be associated with their psychological symptoms. Objectives To examine the association between family-clinician (physicians or nurses) communication quality and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress among family members of chronically critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Design A cross-sectional study. Settings and participants The participants were 71 adult family members of 71 patients who required prolonged mechanical ventilation in ten ICUs at three medical centres in Korea. Methods Participants completed the Quality of Communication (QOC) questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). The data were analysed using correlation, bivariate regression, and multiple regression analysis. Results The mean (SD) QOC score for physicians and nurses was 50.3 (15.2) and 42.9 (14.2), respectively. Forty-six participants (64.8%) were identified as being at risk for having anxiety symptoms; 22 (31%) had a mild risk and 24 (33.8%) had a moderate or severe risk. More family members (76.1%) were at risk for having depressive symptoms; 15 (21.1%) had a mild risk and 39 (54.9%) had a moderate or severe risk. For post-traumatic stress symptoms, 48 (67.6%) were at risk. While the QOC scores for nurses were negatively associated with participants’ HADS-depression scores (β = −.01, p = .03), the QOC scores for physicians were not associated with the HADS or IES-R scores. This conclusion held after consideration of covariates. Conclusions The findings suggest that communication between family members and ICU nurses may be more influential than that with ICU physicians on psychological distress of family members in Korea. However, further research is warranted to confirm this relationship. Future interventions to reduce psychological distress in family members of chronically critically ill patients may need to target ICU nurses for improving communication skills.

Background: Interpersonal competence is an important capacity for nurses. Recently, the advent of smartphones has instigated considerable changes in daily life. Because smartphone has multiple functions, people tend to use them for numerous activities, often leading to addictive behavior. Methods: This cross-sectional study performed a detailed analysis of smartphone addiction subscales and social support related to interpersonal competence of nursing students. Overall, 324 college students were recruited at Catholic University in Seoul, Korea from Feb 2013 to Mar 2013. Participants completed a self-reported questionnaire, which included scales that measured smartphone addiction, social support, interpersonal competence, and general characteristics. Path analysis was used to evaluate structural relations between subscales of smartphone addictions, social support, and interpersonal competence. Summary Purpose This study identifies degree of awareness and legal knowledge about overall abuse and violence, and investigates attitudes towards domestic violence in emergency nurses. Methods The data collection period was between August and December 2012 for 131 nurses who worked in the emergency center of five hospitals in South Korea. This study surveyed emergency nurses about the recognition of abuse and violence, the legal knowledge of abuse and violence, and the attitudes towards domestic violence. Results This study showed that approximately 60.0% of participants experienced incidents of suspected abuse or violence, but the reporting rates were low. Of all the participants, 70.2% knew that they must report the discovery of abuse or violent incidents, but 45.0% did not know that if someone who had duty to report but did not report that he/she had a legal responsibility. Most emergency nurses agreed that "even if the domestic violence is severe it should not be suggested to victims that they run away, leaving children at home", and "perpetrators are patients who need treatment." Conclusions Appropriate awareness about abuse and violence, and systematic education are required for emergency nurses so that they can provide appropriate interventions.

Purpose: This is a retrospective study that investigated cancer patients' complaints of moderate or severe pain to analyze pain characteristics, pain relief interventions and their effects. Methods: The participants of this study were 363 patients who were hospitalized in the cancer ward for three to 30 days and scored 4 points or higher on the pain severity assessment. Results: The most frequent region of pain was the abdomen. The most frequent factor that exacerbated pain was movement. The most frequent pain alleviating factor was administration of analgesics. The most frequent pain type was breakthrough pain, and the most frequent non-pharmaceutical intervention for pain control was heat therapy. Among all, analgesics were routinely prescribed for 52.2% of the participants. Morphine sulfate was the most frequently used analgesic while Gabapentin was the most frequently used non-narcotic analgesic. At the time of discharge, 82.5% of the participants marked their pain intensity as 3 points or lower. Conclusion: For cancer patients complaining of moderate or severe pain, it is important to actively control pain from the beginning of admission. Thus, it is necessary to educate not only cancer patients using narcotic analgesic for pain control and their families but nurses about the effects and side-effects of drugs. Moreover, patients and their families need to learn how to assess and record pain at home to collect data that can be referred for future treatment.

Background There are no Korean instruments to assess the concepts associated with end-of-life communication quality. Objectives To translate and culturally adapt the Quality of Communication (QOC) questionnaire into Korean and evaluate its acceptability and internal consistency. Methods We first translated the QOC from English into Korean, then back-translated from Korean to English, and evaluated the cultural appropriateness of the items. We pretested and refined the Korean version of the QOC with 11 ICU family members. Subsequently, the Korean version of the QOC was administered to 62 family members of chronically critically ill patients recruited from 10 ICUs to evaluate its internal consistency. Results Participants completed the Korean QOC without difficulty during the pretest, and it showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥0.85). Conclusion This study provided preliminary evidence of the acceptability and reliability of the Korean QOC in ICU family members. Nonetheless, further evaluation, including item relevance and other psychometric properties, is warranted.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of knowledge of hepatitis A, health perception, and health promoting behavior among young and middle-age adult`s. Methods: 207 young and middle-age adult`s workers living in Gyeonggi-do participated in this study and completed structured questionnaire. The knowledge of hepatitis A was assessed by the questionnaire which researchers developed. Health perception was measured by Health Perception Scale (Ware, 1979) while health promoting behavior was assessed by Lee`s(2006) questionnaire. These data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA. Results: The knowledge score of hepatitis A was 9.53; the health perception score was 3.71; the health promoting behavior score was 3.38. There were no significant differences in knowledge of hepatitis A, health perception, and health promoting behaviors. However, A significant correlation was found between health perception and health promoting behaviors. Conclusion: The knowledge of hepatitis A found to be low. Therefore further study needs to develop nursing interventions that could improve knowledge and awareness of hepatitis A.

Aims and objectives To develop and validate an eye care educational programme for intensive care unit nurses. Background Eye care guidelines and protocols have been developed for increasing eye care implementation in intensive care units. However, the guidelines lack consistency in assessment or intervention methodology. Design This was a one-sample pre/postprogramme evaluation study design for testing the effects of the eye care educational programme, developed for and applied to intensive care unit nurses, on their levels of knowledge and awareness. Methods The eye care educational programme was developed based on literature review and survey of educational needs. Thirty intensive care unit nurses served as subjects for the study. Results The levels of eye care-related knowledge, awareness and practice were enhanced following the implementation of the educational programme. Moreover, satisfaction with the educational programme was high. Conclusion It is necessary to intensify eye care education aimed at new nurses who are inexperienced in intensive care unit nursing and provide continuing education on the latest eye care methods and information to experienced nurses. Relevance to clinical practice The eye care educational programme developed in this study can be used as a strategy to periodically assess the eye status of patients and facilitate the appropriate eye care.

summary Purpose: The aim of this study was to understand factors that influence post-traumatic stress (PTS) in Korean forensic science investigators. Methods: A total of 111 forensic science investigators were recruited in Korea. PTS was measured using the tool modified by Choi (2001) from the original developed by Foa, Riggs, Dancu, and Rothbaum (1993) based on DSM-IV. Factors influencing PTS included demographic and job-related characteristics, emotional intelligence, and death anxiety. Results: PTS scores were positively correlated with personality type, fatigue from work, and death anxiety. PTS scores were negatively correlated with length of career as a forensic science investigator and emotional intelligence. The factors that had the greatest influence on PTS were death anxiety, years spent as a forensic science investigator, personality type, emotional intelligence, fatigue, and homicide experience. The explanatory power of these six factors was 44.0%. Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to regularly evaluate the mental health of those who are vulnerable to PTS. Based on these results, various interventions could be implemented for promoting overall health of the forensic science investigators.

This study examined the factors influencing internet addiction levels and mental health in a nationally-representative sample of 74,980 Korean middle- and high-school students who completed the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. The prevalence rates of potential internet addiction and internet addiction were 14.8% and 3%, respectively. The odds ratios for potential internet addiction were higher in both boys and girls who reported suicidal ideation, depressive mood, moderate or higher subjective stress, moderate or more happiness, or ever having engaged in problematic substance use. Adolescents at high risk for internet addiction had poor mental health outcomes. The findings indicate the need for measures to prevent and manage internet addiction in adolescents that consider the severity of factors related to internet addiction.

Methods: A structured questionnaire was developed to examine nursing students’ biomedical ethics. Their attitudes toward terminal patients’ death were measured by using the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale. Surveys were conducted with 660 nursing student s enrolled at a three-year college located in Daejeon, Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics , Wilcoxon rank sum test and Kruskall Waills test. Results: Students who have experienced biomedical ethics conflicts, agreed to prohibition of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and have no religion exhibited more negative attitudes toward death compared to students without the above characteristics. Of the participants, 81.2% answered that life sustaining treatment for terminal patients should be discontinued and 76.4% replied that CPR on terminal patients should be prohibited. The majority of the correspondents stated that the two measures abo ve are necessary “for patients’ peaceful and dignified death”. Conclusion: Study results indicate the need to establish a firm biomedical ethics value to help nursing students form a positive attitude toward death. It also seems necessary to offer students related training before going into clinical practice, if possible. The training program should be developed by considering students’ religion, school year, experience with biomedical ethics conflicts and opinion about CPR on terminal patients. The program should also include an opportunity for students to experience terminal patient care in advance via simulation practice on standardized patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify levels of perceived stigma, self-esteem, quality of life and factors influencing on quality of life in people with Hansens' disease. Methods: The subjects were 128 people in Sorokdo National Hospital, two nursing homes, and three settlements. The stigma scale, self-esteem scale, and World Health Organization's quality of life instrument were used. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from July to August, 2010 and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Ducan's multiple range test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression by SAS. Results: The level of perceived stigma was 3.93, self-esteem was 26.2, quality of life was 2.78. Self-esteem was positively associated with quality of life. Through the multiple regression, it was found that self-esteem and job were factors influencing of quality of life with 43% of predictability. Conclusion: It was found that self-esteem and job were important for people with Hansen's disease. To improve the quality of life in people with Hansen's disease, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions fostering self-esteem and decreasing perceived stigma.

All subjects reported having suffered bodily injury due to falling or serious traffic accidents; 92.2% reported having suffered bodily injury caused by suicide attempts; 91.6% reported having experienced physical violence or abuse; 76.0% reported having experi enced sexual assault or abus e; 68.9% reported having experienced some difficulties during their nursing care due to lack of forensics knowledge; and 88.6% reported never having been trained in forensics nursing. The educational needs score for "forensics nursing" was 3.61; the needs score for "abuse- and violence-related education" was 3.65; the needs score for "incident data collection related education" was 3.47; and the needs score for "forensics theory related education" was 3.34.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify reports of workplace violence, stress and turnover intention among perioperative nurses. Methods: The data were collected using questionnaire from 162 perioperative. Results: All of the nurses in the study reported incidents of violence within six months of the study. Doctors and specifically operating surgeons were cited as perpetrating workplace violence. The stated source of the violence was failure or shortage of surgical equipment or instrument and fall out of surgeon's preference. Subjects reported (87.7%) workplace abuse from nurses and most often from senior nurses. Nurse abuse was in the form of verbal abuse. Fatigue and stress stemming from heavy workload were cited as the source of the workplace violence. The subjects reported stress levels of 7.39 out of a possible ten points from workplace violence. A little more than thirty five percent of the subjects reported having intentions to leave because of workplace violence. These nurses reported higher level of stress and experienced more workplace violence from nurses and doctors as compared to those nurses who reported no turnover intention. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that a third of the employed nurses reported wanting to leave their positions due to workplace violence. Workplace violence is a serious problem for nurses whether it is from physicians or from other nurses.

This study aimed to survey the impact of smartphone overuse on upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships among college students. Subjects completed a structured questionnaire consisting of the Smartphone Addiction Inventory, the Musculoskeletal Symptom Checklist, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the Relationship Change Scale from May to June 2012. We analyzed the survey data from 525 responses, excluding unreturned or incomplete surveys. Data were analyzed using the test and t-test to determine the differences in smartphone overuse and its impact on upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships between two groups: the overuse and normal use groups. Moreover, Pearson`s correlation coefficient was used to examine the correlation between smartphone overuse and upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships. The results placed 62 people (11.8%) in the smartphone overuse group. The extent of smartphone overuse was more severe among female than male college students, and longer time spent using smartphones per day was directly related to smartphone overuse. The smartphone overuse group evidenced higher shoulder pain than the normal use group did, but no differences were found in other sites of the upper extremities. State anxiety, trait anxiety, and depression were higher in the smartphone overuse group than in the normal use group. Subjects with a higher extent of smartphone overuse experienced increased state-anxiety, trait-anxiety, and depression. Moreover, subjects with higher state-anxiety, trait-anxiety, and depression scores were more likely to have poor interpersonal relationships. Therefore, early screening for smartphone overuse should be evaluated, because it can be useful in developing addiction prevention programs to improve posture, stress coping, positive mental health, and effective interpersonal relationships.

Purpose: The study was designed to verify effects of aromatherapy on depression, anxiety and the autonomic nervous system in breast cancer patients who are undergoing adjuvant radiotherapy. Methods: Data were collected from November 2006 through March 2007 at the C university hospital in Seoul. The study included 33 patients and they were assigned to three groups. Group I had aroma oil inhalation for 2 minutes per time, three times a day for six weeks whereas Group II and a control group inhaled aroma oil for 2 minutes per time, once a day for six weeks. For Groups I and II, a mixture of lemon, lavender, rosewood and rose essential oils were used while control group inhaled tea tree oil. Results: Depression was significantly decreased in patients in the experimental groups only. In Groups I and II patients, anxiety level was lower than that in control patients. Patients in Groups I and II also showed stronger physical resistance to stress than control group patients. Conclusion: Aromatherapy should be considered as a method that can significantly decrease depression in breast cancer patients who are undergoing adjuvant radiotherapy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Death Education Program which had been provided to family caregivers of disabled individuals. A single group pretest-posttest design was employed for this study, which was conducted at a community rehabilitation center located in Ulsan, South Korea. Methods: Death Education Program was conducted for 16 family caregivers of disabled individuals who agreed to participate in this study. A 2.5-hour session was conducted once a week for 10 weeks. To investigate the effects of the education program, structured questionnaires, which assessed the patients and their family member's conceptions on the meaning of life, and their resilience, burden, and attitude towards death, were administered before and after the program. Results: The subjects' conception of the meaning of life and resilience did not significantly change. The median scores for the burden of family caregivers declined, while those for the subjects' attitude towards death increased, after attending the education program. Conclusion: The findings showed that Death Education Program has an affirmative effect on the burden of family caregivers of disabled individuals and their attitude towards death.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate how nurses who take care of terminal patients perceive fluid therapy and how this therapy is currently being used in hospitals. Methods: This survey included 200 nurses, 87 of whom were working in the oncology units of 3 university hospitals in Seoul, Korea, and 113 were working in 18 hospice centers. The data for this study were collected by means of structured questionnaires and analyzed by using the Statistical Analysis System software. The differences in perception towards fluid therapy between nurses working in oncology units and those working in hospice centers were examined using the test and analysis of covariance. Results: Fluid therapy was perceived more negatively by the nurses from hospice centers than by those from oncology units. Continuous subcutaneous infusion was used in hospice centers, but not in oncology units. In addition, the average amount of fluid infused daily differed significantly between the oncology units and hospice centers. Conclusion: Our results show that there were differences in the perception towards fluid therapy between nurses in different clinical settings. Nurses caring for terminal and palliative care patients should not simply provide or withhold fluid therapy, but rather develop a wider range of views on fluid therapy, focusing on effective alternative interventions.

To describe development of the Standard HospicePalliative Care Education Program in Korea, a basic training program for hospicepalliative care professionals, and to report preliminary results from the 2008-2009 demonstration project at 2 sites that support its effectiveness.We developed the Standard HospicePalliative Care Education Program, consisting of 19 modules, under the initiative and financial support of the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Family Affairs. We adapted the train-the-trainer model and benchmarked the EPEC (Education in Palliative and End-of-life Care) course. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, session evaluation, pre-post test of knowledge, and overall course evaluation were assessed by participants.The demonstration program included a total of 105 participants. Overall rating by participants was 4.1 for relevance and usefulness of program contents (range, 4.1-4.2; 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) and 4.1 for the trainer's teaching skills (range, 4.0-4.2). Participants demonstrated significant improvement in their knowledge on the pre-post test for 6 of the 17 modules, and reported that they had gained confidence in their ability to perform palliative care practices (overall mean ratings, 4.0, range; 3.6-4.3; 1 = very low, 5 = very high). Overall evaluation of the program was very high (very satisfied or satisfied; 86%).Development of the Standard HospicePalliative Care Education Program was successful, and its preliminary effectiveness was shown by the demonstration program. Comments on our experience in Korea would be helpful to efforts in other countries, particularly those with limited resources for hospice and palliative care.

Purpose: This study was to identify the role of general hospice palliative nurse through job analysis (duties, task, and task elements). Methods: The sample consisted of 136 nurses or professors who were performing duties related to hospice care areas in Korea. A survey method was used, and the questionnaire included frequencies, criticality, and difficulties of task elements in job description by the DAC UM method. Descriptive statistics were performed by using SPSS WIN 17.0. Results: The job description of general hospice palliative nurse was identified 8 duties, 36 tasks, and 137 task elements. As for the 8 duties, the average scores of frequency, criticality, and difficulty were 2.94, 3.66, and 2.80, respectively. The role of ‘pain assessment’ was the most important task element among frequency and criticality. The lowest score at the frequency an d criticality were ‘manage public finance’ and ‘collect datum through diagnostic test & lab’, respectively. Furthermore, the role of ‘identify spiritual needs of patients and family’ was the most difficult task, whereas the role of ‘manage documents and information’ was the least. Conclusion: In this study, we could recognize the reality of general hospice palliative nurse’s performances. For general hospice palliative nurse, therefore, concrete practice guide lines of psychosocial and spiritual care, commu-nication skills, and bereavement care with qualifying system are critically needed.
