The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in a magnetic topological insulator system without the need of an external magnetic field becomes of great interest because of its dissipationless spin currents. The proximity effect via a magnetic adlayer is a promising strategy to bring magnetism into a topological insulator (TI) due to its boosted Curie temperature for a realistic application. In this work, a proximity-induced magnetism above 90 K in a TI, (Bi 0.25 Sb 0.75 ) 2 Te 3 , on a ferrimagnetic adlayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, thulium-iron-garnet (TIG), was evidenced directly by using magnetic circular dichroism. A competition between exchange couplings with different sublattice-sites was further revealed element-specifically in a temperature-driven spin-reorientation of TI, bringing an issue on magnetic inhomogeneity at the interface, which might cause difficulties in obtaining QAHE in such a TI/TIG bilayer system. Our results prove directly the robust magnetism of TI above liquid nitrogen temperatures and also give a deep insight into the mechanism of interfacial coupling in the proximity effect for the bilayer of TI and magnetic oxide, which could be essential for the design of a system with QAHE.

Despite a large number of rear-end collisions on the road and a high frequency of whiplash injuries reported, the mechanism of whiplash injuries is not completely understood. One of the reasons is that the injury is not necessarily accompanied by obvious tissue damage detectable by X-ray or MRI. An extensive series of biomechanics studies, including injury epidemiology, neck kinematics, facet capsule ligament mechanics, injury mechanisms and injury criteria, were undertaken to help elucidate these whiplash injury mechanisms and gain a better understanding of cervical facet pain. These studies provide the following evidences to help explain the mechanisms of the whiplash injury: (1) Whiplash injuries are generally considered to be a soft tissue injury of the neck with symptoms such as neck pain and stiffness, shoulder weakness, dizziness, headache and memory loss, etc. (2) Based on kinematical studies on the cadaver and volunteers, there are three distinct periods that have the potential to cause injury to the neck. In the first stage, flexural deformation of the neck is observed along with a loss of cervical lordosis; in the second stage, the cervical spine assumes an S-shaped curve as the lower vertebrae begin to extend and gradually cause the upper vertebrae to extend; during the final stage, the entire neck is extended due to the extension moments at both ends. (3) The in vivo environment afforded by rodent models of injury offers particular utility for linking mechanics, nociception and behavioral outcomes. Experimental findings have examined strains across the facet joint as a mechanism of whiplash injury, and suggested a capsular strain threshold or a vertebral distraction threshold for whiplash-related injury, potentially producing neck pain. (4) Injuries to the facet capsule region of the neck are a major source of post-crash pain. There are several hypotheses on how whiplash-associated injury may occur and three of these injuries are related to strains within the facet capsule connected with events early in the impact. (5) There are several possible injury criteria to correlate with the duration of symptoms during reconstructions of actual crashes. These results form the biomechanical basis for a hypothesis that the facet joint capsule is a source of neck pain and that the pain may arise from large strains in the joint capsule that will cause pain receptors to fire. STUDY DESIGN: Factors affecting the risk of cervical spine injury in rollover crashes were investigated using a detailed finite element human head-neck model. OBJECTIVE: Analyze systematically neck responses and associated injury predictors under complex loading conditions similar to real-world rollover scenarios and use the findings to identify potential design improvements. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although many previous experimental and numerical studies have focused on cervical spine injury mechanisms and tolerance, none of them have investigated the risk of cervical spine injuries under loading condition similar to that in rollovers. METHODS: The effects of changing the coefficient of friction (COF), impact velocity, padding material thickness and stiffness, and muscle force on the risk of neck injuries were analyzed in 16 different impact orientations based on a Taguchi array of design of experiments. RESULTS: Impact velocity is the most important factor in determining the risk of cervical spine fracture (P = 0.000). Decreases in the COF between the head and impact surface can effectively reduce the risk of cervical spine fracture (P = 0.038). If the COF is not 0, an impact with lateral force component could sometimes increase the risk of cervical spine fracture; and the larger the oriented angle of the impact surface, the more important it becomes to reduce the COF to protect the neck. Soft (P = 0.033) and thick (P = 0.137) padding can actually decrease the neck fracture risk, which is in contrast to previous experimental data. CONCLUSION: A careful selection of proper padding stiffness and thickness, along with a minimized COF between the head and impact surface or between the padding and its supporting structure, may simultaneously decrease the risk of head and neck injuries during rollover crashes. A seatbelt design to effectively reduce/eliminate the head-to-roof impact velocity is also very crucial to enhance the neck protection in rollovers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Backgroud: Decreased acetabular version and posterior acetabular coverage of the femoral head have been regarded as the leading causes of sport-related posterior hip dislocation or subluxation. This study aimed to examine the posterior acetabular coverage of the femoral head in 21 patients who sustained posterior hip dislocation or subluxation during sport activities., Methods: The anterior and posterior acetabular rims on 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) images were delineated on the normal side in these patients. Radiologic signs, including crossover and posterior wall signs, were examined. The fracture center level (FCL) of the posterior acetabular wall was identified on axial CT images of the injured hip and the level was marked on the normal side. The difference in the femoral head coverage by posterior and anterior acetabular rims was measured by measuring the horizontal distance between anterior and posterior acetabular rims at the FCL (posterior-anterior [P-A] index). The acetabular version was measured at the femoral head and FCL using axial CT images of the normal side. Femoral head coverage by the posterior acetabular wall on the normal side was measured using 3D-CT (areal coverage)., Results: The crossover and posterior wall signs were positive in 14 and 10 patients, respectively, in 3D-CT images. The FCL was evenly distributed in the proximal half of the posterior acetabular wall. Seven patients had a P-A index of ≤ 0, and all were positive for the crossover sign. The anterior acetabular rim was relatively prominent in these patients. The acetabular version was lower at the FCL than at the femoral head center ( p < 0.001). We aimed to investigate whether early clinical indicators were associated with eventual disease severity, and to develop a predictive model for severe asparaginase-associated pancreatitis (AAP). Seventy-five acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) cases with AAP admitted to Shanghai Children's Medical Center from March 2013 to August 2023 were divided into non-severe (n = 44) and severe (n = 31) groups based on Atlanta diagnostic and AAP grading criteria. We compared essential information, asparaginase(ASP) dosage form, cumulative dose, clinical characteristics and laboratory tests between the groups. Statistically significant indicators were analysed with multifactorial logistic regression to identify independent risk factors for severe AAP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves assessed the early predictive value of age, C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen (FIB) levels. In the early stages of AAP onset, significant differences in age, CRP, platelet count, red blood cell distribution width, albumin, calcium, FIB, and D-dimer levels were found between the non-severe and severe AAP groups (p < 0.05). Multifactorial logistic regression identified age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.204, p = 0.035), CRP (OR = 1.334, p = 0.003), and FIB (OR = 0.85, p = 0.008) as independent predictors of severe AAP. ROC analysis showed an area under the curves (AUC) for age was 0.681 (95% CI: 0.557-0.805), CRP was 0.766 (95% CI: 0.653-0.880), FIB was 0.735 (95% CI: 0.612-0.857). Optimal cut-off values for age, CRP, and FIB were 9.46 years, 48.5 mg/L and 1.265 g/L respectively. The combined AUC was 0.916 (95% CI: 0.845-0.986), with 0.903 sensitivity and 0.818 specificity, outperforming individual predictors (p < 0.05). Introduction: Cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) are associated with adverse psychosocial outcomes, but their impact on workplace absenteeism remains poorly understood. Moreover, few studies have examined the role of CUD severity. This study aims to address these gaps by examining the associations between cannabis use recency, frequency, CUD severity, and workplace absenteeism., Methods: Cross-sectional data from a U.S. representative sample of full-time employed adults aged ≥18 from the 2021 to 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N=46,499) were analyzed. The associations between cannabis use recency, past-month cannabis use frequency, CUD severity, and workplace absenteeism (measured by self-reported number of missed days due to illness/injury and skipped work in the last 30 days) were evaluated using negative binomial regression, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and other substance use. Data were analyzed in 2023-2024., Results: An estimated 15.9% of full-time employed adults used cannabis in the past month, with 6.5% meeting CUD criteria. Past-month cannabis use (compared to no lifetime use), more frequent past-month cannabis use (compared to no use in the past month), and each level of CUD (compared to no CUD) were associated with increased incidence of both missing work due to illness/injury and skipping work, with a dose-response relationship observed between CUD severity and skipping work (mild: adjusted incident rate ratio [aIRR]=1.60 [95% confidence interval [CI]=1.24, 2.08]; moderate: aIRR=1.98 [95% CI=1.50, 2.61]); severe (aIRR=2.87 [95% CI=2.12, 3.88])., Conclusions: Individuals with recent and frequent cannabis use and CUD are disproportionately prone to workplace absenteeism. Background: Ketamine's potential for treating depression has drawn increased clinical interest in recent years. However, despite growing therapeutic use, recreational use among individuals with depression remain underexplored., Methods: We analyzed data from the 2015-2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health focusing on adults in the US. Trends in past-year ketamine use, overall and by depression status, were estimated separately for 2015-2019 and 2021-2022 due to methodological changes in the survey. We also delineated correlates of ketamine use in each period, focusing on depression, sociodemographic characteristics, and other past-year drug use., Results: Overall ketamine use prevalence increased from 2015 to 2019 (from 0.11 % to 0.20 %, an 81.8 % increase, p < 0.01) and from 2021 to 2022 (from 0.20 % to 0.28 %, a 40.0 % increase, p < 0.05). From 2015 to 2019, use increased among adults with and without depression (by 139.3 % [p < 0.05] and 66.7 % [p < 0.05], respectively), while from 2021 to 2022, an increase occurred only among those without depression (by 38.9 %, p < 0.05). Multivariable models revealed that depression was associated with increased odds of ketamine use in 2015-2019 (aOR = 1.80, 95 % CI: 1.12-2.89) but not in later years. New sociodemographic correlates emerged in 2021-2022, including adults aged 26-34 and those with a college degree being at higher odds for use. Various drugs (especially ecstasy/MDMA and gamma-hydroxybutyrate) were consistently associated with higher odds of use., Conclusion: We identified differential patterns and correlates of ketamine use over time. Shifts may be related to the evolving ketamine landscape and/or changing survey methodology. Background: Since 1992, over 800 pancreas transplants have been performed in Korea. However, this number is significantly lower compared to the number of kidney or liver transplants., Methods: Between 2015 and July 2023, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital conducted 100 pancreas transplants, accounting for about 20% of all transplants performed in Korea during this period. The study comprised 27 simultaneous pancreas and kidney (SPK) transplants, 23 pancreas after kidney (PAK) transplants, and 50 pancreas transplant alone (PTA) cases. Duodenoduodenostomy was the primary surgical technique employed for exocrine drainage, along with various modifications of the venous outflow anastomosis., Results: The availability of brain-dead donors for kidney transplants was lower compared to isolated pancreas transplants. Patients undergoing SPK transplants faced significantly longer waiting times than those receiving PTA or PAK transplants. The rate of surgical complications was acceptable, with a notably low thrombotic graft failure rate of 1.0%. In the PTA group, acute rejection of the graft pancreas occurred frequently (18.0%), though this was not statistically significant (P=0.328). The pancreas transplantation survival rates were 91.0%, 78.5%, and 75.4% at 1, 5, and 9 years, respectively. The PTA group exhibited a lower graft survival rate than the SPK and PAK groups, with marginal statistical significance (P=0.059)., Conclusions: Graft survival rates have improved over time due to advancements in surgical techniques and immunosuppressant strategies. By sharing our experiences, we aim to enhance the activity and success of pancreas transplantation in Korea.

Estrogens in river systems can significantly impact aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the multiphase partitioning of estrogens in Wulo Creek, Taiwan, which receives animal feedlot wastewater, to understand their distribution and potential environmental implications. Water samples were separated into suspended particulate matter (SPM), colloidal, and soluble phases using centrifugation and cross-flow ultrafiltration. Concentrations of estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3) in each phase were analyzed using LC/MS/MS. Partition coefficients were calculated to assess estrogen distribution among phases. Estrogens were predominantly found in the soluble phase (85.8-87.3%). The risk assessment of estrogen equivalent (EEQ) values suggests that estrogen concentration in water poses a higher risk compared to SPM, with a majority of the samples indicating a high risk to aquatic organisms. The colloidal phase contained 12.7-14.2% of estrogens. The log K COC values (4.72-4.77 L/kg-C) were significantly higher than the log K OC and log K POC values (2.02-3.40 L/kg-C) for all estrogens. Colloids play a critical role in estrogen distribution in river systems, potentially influencing their fate, transport, and biotoxicity. This finding highlights the importance of considering colloidal interactions in assessing estrogen behavior in aquatic environments.

Background: Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK) is the most common type of pancreas transplant performed worldwide. In contrast, there are a few drawbacks to pancreas after kidney transplant (PAK), such as the requirement for an additional operation, the immunologic risk, etc. SPK is the best option, but because of a lack of deceased donors and a lengthy waiting period, it is not always possible to use it., Methods: From 2015 to 2022, we performed 23 SPKs and 21 PAKs at the Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in Korea. We compared the findings of PAK and SPK conducted within the same time period., Results: The waiting time for pancreatic graft was significantly shorter in the PAK than SPK group (345 days vs 1350 days, P ≤ .001). Throughout the monitoring period, just 1 pancreatic graft was lost in patients who underwent PAK, and the 7-year graft survival was 95%, with no statistically significant difference compared to SPK (90.3%, P = .600). Moreover, the graft survival of SPK or PAK was superior to that of pancreatic transplant alone (63.7%, P = .016). Only 1 pancreatic graft loss was a case of mortality with a functioning graft. No additional kidney transplant loss was observed in PAK recipients. There was no variation in creatinine levels between the pretransplant and posttransplant periods. This paper proposed a fine dust detection system using time-interleaved counters in which surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors changed the resonance point characteristic. When fine dust was applied to the SAW sensor, the resonance point decreased. The SAW oscillator made of the SAW sensor and radio frequency (RF) amplifier generated an oscillation frequency that was the same as the resonance frequency. The oscillation frequency was transferred to digital data by a 20-bit asynchronous counter. This system has two channels: a sensing channel and a reference channel. Each channel has a SAW oscillator and a 20-bit asynchronous counter. The difference of the two channel counter results is the frequency difference. Through this, it is possible to know whether fine dust adheres to the SAW sensor. The proposed circuit achieved 0.95 ppm frequency resolution when it was operated at a frequency of 460 MHz. This circuit was implemented in a TSMC 130 nm CMOS process.

Importance: Despite growing interest in psychedelics, there is a lack of routine population-based surveillance of psychedelic microdosing (taking "subperceptual" doses of psychedelics, approximately one-twentieth to one-fifth of a full dose, over prolonged periods). Analyzing Google search queries can provide insights into public interest and help address this gap., Objective: To analyze trends in public interest in microdosing in the US through Google search queries and assess their association with cannabis and psychedelic legislative reforms., Design, Setting, and Participants: In this cross-sectional study, a dynamic event-time difference-in-difference time series analysis was used to assess the impact of cannabis and psychedelic legislation on microdosing search rates from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2023. Google search rates mentioning "microdosing," "micro dosing," "microdose," or "micro dose" within the US and across US states were measured in aggregate., Exposure: Enactment of (1) local psychedelic decriminalization laws; (2) legalization of psychedelic-assisted therapy and statewide psychedelic decriminalization; (3) statewide medical cannabis use laws; (4) statewide recreational cannabis use laws; and (5) all cannabis and psychedelic use restricted., Main Outcome and Measures: Microdosing searches per 10 million Google queries were measured, examining annual and monthly changes in search rates across the US, including frequency and nature of related searches., Results: Searches for microdosing in the US remained stable until 2014, then increased annually thereafter, with a cumulative increase by a factor of 13.4 from 2015 to 2023 (7.9 per 10 million to 105.6 per 10 million searches, respectively). In 2023, there were 3.0 million microdosing searches in the US. Analysis at the state level revealed that local psychedelic decriminalization laws were associated with an increase in search rates by 22.4 per 10 million (95% CI, 7.5-37.2), statewide psychedelic therapeutic legalization and decriminalization were associated with an increase in search rates by 28.9 per 10 million (95% CI, 16.5-41.2), statewide recreational cannabis laws were associated with an increase in search rates by 40.9 per 10 million (95% CI, 28.6-53.3), and statewide medical cannabis laws were associated with an increase in search rates by 11.5 per 10 million (95% CI, 6.0-16.9). From August through December 2023, 27.0% of the variation in monthly microdosing search rates between states was explained by differences in cannabis and psychedelics legal status., Conclusion and Relevance: This cross-sectional study found that state-led legislative reforms on cannabis and psychedelics were associated with increased public interest in microdosing psychedelics.

Background: Treatment of comminuted patellar fractures accompanied by coronal split articular and inferior pole fragments is a challenge. To treat this difficult fracture, we perform articular fragment detachment and separate fixation for coronal split articular and inferior pole fragments. We aimed to evaluate the radiological and clinical outcomes of our technique in comminuted patellar fractures at least 1 year after surgery., Methods: Between January 2019 and June 2022, 15 patients diagnosed with comminuted patellar fractures accompanied by coronal split articular and inferior pole fragments based on preoperative computed tomography underwent surgery using the articular detachment technique. The key point of this technique was anatomical reduction and subchondral fixation of the coronal split articular fragment to the superior main fragment after complete detachment of the coronal split fragment from the inferior pole. The remaining inferior pole was fixed using a separate construct. Postoperative articular gap, articular step-off, and complications, including resorption, reduction loss, and avascular necrosis of fixed articular fragments, were evaluated as radiological outcomes. Range of motion and the Lysholm scores were used to evaluate clinical outcomes., Results: Among the 15 patients, the coronal split articular fragments were fixed using Kirschner wires in 13 patients and headless screws in 2 patients. The inferior poles were fixed using separate vertical wiring in 13 patients and tension-band wiring in 2 patients. A postoperative articular gap was noted in 7 patients, with an average articular gap of 1.0 mm (range, 0.7-1.6 mm). No articular step-off was observed. Bone union and normal range of motion were achieved in all patients. On the 1-year postoperative lateral radiograph, resorption of the articular fracture site was seen in 5 patients. There was no loss of reduction or avascular necrosis of the coronal split articular fragments. The present study explored bilingual coactivation during natural monolingual sentence-reading comprehension. Native Chinese readers who had learned Japanese as a second language and those who had not learned it at all were tested. The results showed that unrelated Chinese word pairs that shared a common Japanese translation could parafoveally prime each other. Critically, this translation-related preview effect was modulated by the readers' language-learning experiences. It was found only among the late Chinese-Japanese bilinguals, but not among the monolingual Chinese readers. By setting a novel step, which was testing bilingual coactivation of semantic knowledge in a natural reading scenario without an explicit presentation of L2 words, our results suggest that bilingual word processing can be automatic, unconscious and nonselective. Chiral crystals and molecules were recently predicted to form an intriguing platform for unconventional orbital physics. Here, we report the observation of chirality-driven orbital textures in the bulk electronic structure of CoSi, a prototype member of the cubic B20 family of chiral crystals. Using circular dichroism in soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission, we demonstrate the formation of a bulk orbital-angular-momentum texture and monopolelike orbital-momentum locking that depends on crystal handedness. We introduce the intrinsic chiral circular dichroism, icCD, as a differential photoemission observable and a natural probe of chiral electron states. Our findings render chiral crystals promising for spin-orbitronics applications.

This study explores the applications of virtual scenario learning in addressing the global issue of school bullying through digital educational tools. Previous research suggests that virtual role-playing experiences can reduce bullying incidents; however, experiencing the victim role can evoke negative emotions, while the bystander role may not fully convey the severity of bullying. This study aims to investigate the effects of a multi-role experience-based virtual scenario learning model on learners by integrating the advantages of both roles. This study employed a quasi-experimental research method, which involved grouping 56 fourth-grade elementary school students in Taipei City, Taiwan, into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group utilized the multi-role experience-based virtual scenario learning model, while the control group utilized a single-role experience-based model. The study compared the differences in academic achievement, empathy, and problem-solving tendencies between the two groups. The findings indicate that the experimental group significantly excelled over the control group in academic achievement, empathy, and problem-solving tendencies. Objective: This study aims to investigate the efficacy of microsurgery with intraoperative indocyanine green (ICG) angiography as a treatment approach for ethmoidal dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF)., Methods: Between January 2010 and July 2021, our institution encountered a total of eight cases of ethmoidal DAVF. In each of these cases, microsurgical treatment was undertaken utilizing a bilateral sub-frontal interhemispheric approach, with the aid of intraoperative ICG angiography., Results: ICG angiography identified bilateral venous drainage with single dominance in four cases (50%) of ethmoidal DAVF, a finding that eluded detection during preoperative transfemoral cerebral angiography (TFCA). The application of microsurgical treatment, in conjunction with intraoperative ICG angiography, resulted in consistently positive clinical outcomes for all patients, as evaluated using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at the 6-month postoperative follow-up assessment; six patients showed GOS score of 5, while the remaining two patients attained a GOS score of 4., Conclusions: The use of intraoperative ICG angiography enabled accurate identification of both dominant and non-dominant venous drainage patterns, ensuring complete disconnection of the fistula and reducing the risk of recurrence.

This in vitro study examines the anti-oral cancer effects and mechanisms of a combined X-ray/SK2 treatment, i.e., X-ray and 6- n -butoxy-10-nitro-12,13-dioxa-11-azatricyclo[7.3.1.0 2,7 ]trideca-2,4,6,10-tetraene (SK2). ATP cell viability and flow cytometry-based cell cycle, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and DNA damage assessments were conducted. The X-ray/SK2 treatment exhibited lower viability in oral cancer (Ca9-22 and CAL 27) cells than in normal (Smulow-Glickman, S-G) cells, i.e., 32.0%, 46.1% vs. 59.0%, which showed more antiproliferative changes than with X-ray or SK2 treatment. Oral cancer cells under X-ray/SK2 treatment showed slight subG1 and G2/M increments and induced high annexin V-monitored apoptosis compared to X-ray or SK2 treatment. The X-ray/SK2 treatment showed higher caspase 3 and 8 levels for oral cancer cells than other treatments. X-ray/SK2 showed a higher caspase 9 level in CAL 27 cells than other treatments, while Ca9-22 cells showed similar levels under X-ray and/or SK2. The X-ray/SK2 treatment showed higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) depletion than other treatments. Meanwhile, the mitochondrial superoxide (MitoSOX) and glutathione levels in X-ray/SK2 treatment did not exhibit the highest rank compared to others. Moreover, oral cancer cells had higher γH2AX and/or 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine levels from X-ray/SK2 treatment than others. All these measurements for X-ray/SK2 in oral cancer cells were higher than in normal cells and attenuated by N-acetylcysteine. In conclusion, X-ray/SK2 treatment showed ROS-dependent enhanced antiproliferative, apoptotic, and DNA damage effects in oral cancer cells with a lower cytotoxic influence on normal cells.

Color-changing fibers, which can intuitively convey information to the human eye, can be used to facilely add functionality to various types of clothing. However, they are often expensive and complex, and can suffer from low durability. Therefore, in this study, we developed highly elastic and hydrophobic thermochromic fibers as wearable temperature sensors using a simple method that does not require an electric current. A thermochromic pigment was embedded inside and outside hydrophobic silica aerogel particles, following which the thermochromic aerogel was fixed to highly elastic spandex fibers using polydimethylsiloxane as a flexible binder. In particular, multi-strand spandex fibers were used instead of single strands, resulting in the thermochromic aerogels penetrating the inside of the strands upon their expansion by solvent swelling. During drying, the thermochromic aerogel adhered more tightly to the fibers by compressing the strands. The thermochromic fiber was purple at room temperature (25 °C), but exhibited a two-stage color change to blue and then white as the temperature increased to 37 °C. In addition, even after 100 cycles of tension-contraction at 200%, the thermochromic aerogel did not detach and was strongly attached to the fiber. Additionally, it was confirmed that color change due to temperature was stable even after exposure to 1 wt% NaCl (artificial sweat) and 0.1 wt% detergent solutions. Background: The clinical efficacy and safety of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment for COVID-19 remain controversial. This study aimed to map the current status and gaps of available evidence, and conduct a meta-analysis to further investigate the benefit of IVIg in COVID-19 patients., Methods: Electronic databases were searched for systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SR/MAs), primary studies with control groups, reporting on the use of IVIg in patients with COVID-19. A random-effects meta-analysis with subgroup analyses regarding study design and patient disease severity was performed. Our outcomes of interest determined by the evidence mapping, were mortality, length of hospitalization (days), length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay (days), number of patients requiring mechanical ventilation, and adverse events., Results: We included 34 studies (12 SR/MAs, 8 prospective and 14 retrospective studies). A total of 5571 hospitalized patients were involved in 22 primary studies. Random-effects meta-analyses of very low to moderate evidence showed that there was little or no difference between IVIg and standard care or placebo in reducing mortality (relative risk [RR] 0.91; 95% CI 0.78-1.06; risk difference [RD] 3.3% fewer), length of hospital (mean difference [MD] 0.37; 95% CI - 2.56, 3.31) and ICU (MD 0.36; 95% CI - 0.81, 1.53) stays, mechanical ventilation use (RR 0.92; 95% CI 0.68-1.24; RD 2.8% fewer), and adverse events (RR 0.98; 95% CI 0.84-1.14; RD 0.5% fewer) of patients with COVID-19. Sensitivity analysis using a fixed-effects model indicated that IVIg may reduce mortality (RR 0.76; 95% CI 0.60-0.97), and increase length of hospital stay (MD 0.68; 95% CI 0.09-1.28)., Conclusion: Very low to moderate certainty of evidence indicated IVIg may not improve the clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Given the discrepancy between the random- and fixed-effects model results, further large-scale and well-designed RCTs are warranted., (© 2023. Introduction: While there is increasing interest in the use of cannabis to manage a range of health-related symptoms, little is known about trends in recent cannabis use with respect to various health conditions., Methods: We examined data from a US representative sample of noninstitutionalized adults age ≥ 18 from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 214,505). We estimated the pooled prevalences followed by linear time trends, overall, and by disability (i.e., difficulty hearing, seeing, thinking, walking, dressing, doing errands) and lifetime (i.e., bronchitis, cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, kidney disease) and current (i.e., asthma, depression, heart disease, hypertension) health condition status using logistic regression. Models with year-by-condition status interaction terms were used to assess differential time trends, adjusting for demographic characteristics., Results: From 2015 to 2019, cannabis use increased significantly among adults with and without each disability and health condition examined. Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, but there is a high reoperation rate (29.7%) commonly due to capsular contracture, implant malpositioning, infection, and unsatisfactory size. Although infection only accounts for 2% of cases, its management is very challenging, especially with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection. Breast prosthetic NTM infection is a rare but is a disastrous condition with an incidence of approximately 0.013%. Immediate salvage reimplantation is usually not suggested, and most studies recommend a gap of 3 to 6 months after combination antibiotics therapy before reimplantation. However, delayed reimplantation often leads to great psychological stress and struggle between the doctor and patient. We present the case report of successful reimplantation in treating prosthetic NTM infections in a 28-year-old female. We discuss a novel technique "transaxillary capsulorrhaphy" to correct the bottoming-out deformity. One year after the combination of antibiotics and surgery, the follow-up computed tomography scan showed complete remission of NTM without recurrence. We discuss the surgical technique in detail. The 1-year follow-up assessment (photos and dynamic video) revealed good cosmesis and reliable correction using the new technique. This report is the first formal description and discussion of one-stage reimplantation following NTM infections. Transaxillary capsulorrhaphy allows for a successful salvage operation when an implant is displaced. This approach provides highly favorable result in eastern women undergoing revision augmentation mammoplasty. Exposure to heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury poses serious health risks to pregnant women because of their high toxicity. In this study, we investigated the associations of heavy metal exposure with birth outcomes of Korean infants. Data of 5,215 women between 2015 and 2019 were analyzed. This study was part of the Korean Children's Environmental Health (Ko-CHENS) study. Linear regression and logistic regression analyses were used to examine effects of concentrations of lead, cadmium, and mercury on birth weight, small for gestational age, and large for gestational age after adjusting for maternal age groups, parity, infant sex, education, income, smoking, drinking, body mass index, stillbirth, premature birth, diabetes, hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Besides adjusting for these covariates, each metal was mutually adjusted to estimate birth weight and large for gestational age status. Maternal cadmium concentrations during early pregnancy (β =  - 39.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): - 63.76, - 16.17) and late pregnancy (β =  - 37.24; 95% CI - 61.63, - 12.84) were significantly associated with birth weight. Cadmium levels during early pregnancy (adjusted OR = 0.637; 95% CI 0.444, 0.912) were also associated with large for gestational age status. Background: Asparaginase (ASP) is an important drug in combined chemotherapy regimens for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL); ASP-associated pancreatitis (AAP) is the main adverse reaction of ASP. Recurrent pancreatitis is a complication of AAP, for which medication is ineffective., Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in treating recurrent pancreatitis due to AAP., Methods: From May 2018 to August 2021, ten children (five males and five females; age range: 4-13 years) with AAP were treated using ERCP due to recurrent pancreatitis. Clinical data of the ten children were collected, including their sex, age, weight, ALL risk grading, clinical symptoms at the onset of pancreatitis, time from the first pancreatitis onset to ERCP, ERCP operation status, and postoperative complications. The symptomatic relief, weight change, and number of pancreatitis onsets before and after ERCP were compared., Results: The preoperative symptoms were abdominal pain, vomiting, inability to eat, weight loss of 2-7 kg, and 2-9 pancreatitis onsets. After the operation, nine of ten patients did not develop pancreatitis, had no abdominal pain, could eat normally; the remaining patient developed three pancreatitis onsets due to the continuous administration of ASP, but eating was not affected. The postoperative weight gain was 1.5-8 kg. Integrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine (WM) is a new medical science grounded in the knowledge bases of both TCM and WM, which then forms a unique modern medical system in China. Integrated TCM and WM has a long history in China, and has made important achievements in the process of clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, the methodological defects in currently published clinical practice guidelines limit its development. The organic integration of TCM and WM is a deeper integration of TCM and WM. To realize the progression of "integration" to "organic integration", a targeted and standardized guideline development methodology is needed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a standardized development procedure for clinical practice guidelines for the organic integration of TCM and WM to promote the systematic integration of TCM and WM research results into clinical practice guidelines in order to achieve optimal results as the whole is greater than the sum of the parts., (© 2023. Circular RNAs (ciRNAs) are emerging as new players in the regulation of gene expression. However, how ciRNAs are involved in neuropathic pain is poorly understood. Here, we identify the nervous-tissue-specific ciRNA-Fmn1 and report that changes in ciRNA-Fmn1 expression in spinal cord dorsal horn neurons play a key role in neuropathic pain after nerve injury. ciRNA-Fmn1 was significantly downregulated in ipsilateral dorsal horn neurons after peripheral nerve injury, at least in part because of a decrease in DNA helicase 9 (DHX9), which regulates production of ciRNA-Fmn1 by binding to DNA-tandem repeats. Blocking ciRNA-Fmn1 downregulation reversed nerve-injury-induced reductions in both the binding of ciRNA-Fmn1 to the ubiquitin ligase UBR5 and the level of ubiquitination of albumin (ALB), thereby abrogating the nerve-injury-induced increase of ALB expression in the dorsal horn and attenuating the associated pain hypersensitivities. Conversely, mimicking downregulation of ciRNA-Fmn1 in naïve mice reduced the UBR5-controlled ubiquitination of ALB, leading to increased expression of ALB in the dorsal horn and induction of neuropathic-pain-like behaviors in naïve mice. Thus, ciRNA-Fmn1 downregulation caused by changes in binding of DHX9 to DNA-tandem repeats contributes to the genesis of neuropathic pain by negatively modulating UBR5-controlled ALB expression in the dorsal horn., (© 2023. Objectives: 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) (also known as "ecstasy" or "Molly") has regained attention in recent years for its efficacy in treating posttraumatic stress disorder, and the drug was granted breakthrough therapy designation for such use by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2017. However, little is known about the current epidemiology of recreational ecstasy/MDMA use., Methods: We estimated past-year prevalence and correlates of ecstasy/MDMA use based on a representative sample of noninstitutionalized US individuals 12 years or older from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 315,661)., Results: An estimated 0.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.9-1.0) of individuals used ecstasy/MDMA in the past year. Compared with those ages 35-49 years, all younger age groups were at increased odds for use, while those older than 50 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.08-0.23) were at low odds for use. Compared with heterosexual men, those identifying as bisexual women (aOR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.02-1.72) were at increased odds for use, and compared with White individuals, those identifying as Asian (aOR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.42-2.59), Black (aOR = 1.70, 95% CI = 1.41-2.06), or multiracial (aOR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.19-2.16) were at increased odds for use. Past-year use of other drugs (e.g., cannabis, ketamine), prescription drug misuse (e.g., pain relievers, stimulants), nicotine dependence (aOR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.00-1.45), and alcohol use disorder (aOR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.25-1.58) were also associated with increased odds for use., Conclusions: While use of ecstasy/MDMA continues to be relatively rare, findings from this study can help inform prevention and harm reduction strategies, especially among certain subpopulations that are at high risk for use., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2023 American Society of Addiction Medicine.)
