Abstract

Diode-pumped rare gas lasers (DPRGLs) have the potential for high-energy laser output with high beam quality. The metastable concentration >1014 cm−3 and pump intensity >10 kW/cm2 are required in developing high-power and efficient DPRGLs. However, the kinetics of 1s and 2p levels (Paschen notation) under these conditions is unclear yet, particularly regarding the adverse effects of interference energy levels (e.g., 1s4 and 2p1–2p8). This study addresses this gap by measuring the number densities of 1s and 2p levels in a diode-pumped plasma jet metastable argon laser. The experiment was conducted with a much higher number density of 1014 cm−3 and a higher pump intensity of 12 kW/cm2 than our previous works. The results indicate that the adverse effect of 1s4 accumulation could be partially compensated, and the relative population distribution of 2p energy levels remained unchanged. However, the high gas temperature (>1000 K) caused a significant negative impact of high 2p levels (2p1–2p8), and the air environment weakened the effect of He collision relaxation. Abstract

Spectrum-narrowed and -locked broad-area diode lasers operating at 780 nm are essential for rubidium laser development. With the help of Littrow-type transmission gratings, we demonstrated a simple scheme with a narrow linewidth and the diode laser's center wavelength locked without thermal drift, in contrast to volume Bragg gratings. By carefully collimating the diode laser beam, we realized a linewidth narrower than 0.17 nm and a side-mode suppression ratio over 20 dB. Furthermore, broad-spectrum tuning at 9 nm was demonstrated by grating angle tuning. This method could easily be adapted to other wavelength diode lasers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

WRF-Chem is widely used to assess regional aerosol radiative feedback. However, in current version, aerosol optical properties are only calculated in four shortwave bands, and only two of them are used to "interpolate" optical properties towards 14 shortwave bands used in the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTMG) scheme. In this study, we use a "Resolved" algorithm to estimate aerosol radiative feedback in WRF-Chem, in which aerosol optical properties are calculated in all 14 shortwave bands. The impacts of changing this calculation algorithm are then evaluated. The simulation results of aerosol optical properties are quite different using the new "Resolved" algorithm, especially for dust aerosols. The alteration of aerosol optical properties result in considerably different aerosol radiative effects: the dust radiative forcing in the atmosphere simulated by the "Resovled" algorithm is about two times larger than the original "Interpolated" algorithm; The dust radiative forcing at top of the atmosphere (TOA) simulated by the "Interpolated" algorithm is negative in all Sahara region, while the "Resolved" algorithm simulates positive forcing at TOA and can exceed 10 W/m2 in the Sahara desert, which is more consistent with previous studies. The modification also leads to changes in meteorological fields due to alterations in radiative feedback effects of aerosols. The surface temperature is changed due to the difference in radiation budget at the bottom of the atmosphere (BOT) and the heating effects by aerosols at the surface. Furthermore, the amendment of algorithm partially corrects the wind field and temperature simulation bias compared to the reanalysis data. The difference in planet boundary layer height can reach up to ~100 m in China and ~200 m in Sahara, further resulting in a greater surface haze considerably. The results show that correcting the estimation algorithm of aerosol radiative effects is necessary in WRF-Chem model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High-phase purity yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) nanoparticles (NPs), which account for more than half of the market share in solid-state lasers, are crucial luminescent ceramic matrixes used in upconversion luminescence (UCL) applications. As is well known, the optical performance of YAG NPs is greatly influenced by their phase purity, necessitating a long-duration, high-temperature annealing process to eliminate intermediate impurity phases and subsequent inspection of the crystal phases using traditional methods such as XRD. Here, we report a convenient direct method to evaluate the phase state of YAG NPs by correlating the macroscopic UCL properties with the phase evolution process of YAG NPs, given the strong dependence of UCL on the host phase structure. Yb3+/Er3+-codoped YAG NPs were fabricated using flame spray pyrolysis (FSP), an efficient industrial mass production method. The UCL intensity ratios of 556 and 546 nm (I556/I546) for Er3+ ions are used as a key parameter to assess the YAG phase states. When the I556/I546 ratio is larger than 1.80, FSP-prepared YAG:Yb3+/Er3+ NPs undergo a complete phase transformation from amorphous to hexagonal YAlO3 (YAH) and ultimately to cubic YAG, resulting in pure cubic YAG NPs with orange-to-green UCL color modulation. Our results offer an efficient optical crystal-phase probe applied for YAG and can enable the exploration of industrial phase monitoring for other optical materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
