Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems or simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems support multiple charging frequency standards and usually transmit two or more frequencies simultaneously. Multi-frequency sinusoidal pulse width modulation (MF-SPWM) technology can output multiple sine wave frequencies at the same time with only one inverter, which effectively reduces the system size and improves compatibility. However, MF-SPWM and dead-time make the MF-inverter highly nonlinearized, with significant effects on the desired frequencies and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the multi-frequency output. In this paper, a double Fourier series-based method of harmonic analysis for the dual-frequency inverter (DF-inverter) is proposed, which can accurately calculate the magnitude of each of the harmonics in the output of the DF-inverter taking into account the influence of dead-time. The calculation methods of the minimum pulse width and voltage THD of the DF-inverter are provided. An analysis shows that when the dead-time is less than the minimum pulse width, its influence is negligible. Meanwhile, when the dead-time is slightly larger than the minimum pulse width, there is a trade-off between the desired frequency component and the THD. Investigating the mechanism behind the high-efficiency deposition of high-quality diamond has always been a prominent topic in related research. This paper investigates the CH 4 -H 2 plasma characteristics and related chemical reaction kinetics in the average power density range of 18–100 W·cm−3, which is a typical range for large-area diamond film deposition. The number densities of H, CH 3 and C 2 H 2 increase linearly with the average power density. C 2 H 2 is the main hydrocarbon in the discharge, and CH 3 is the main single-carbon hydrocarbon. The number density and radial uniformity of CH 3 and C 2 H 2 increase with the average power density, which is necessary for the high rate and uniform deposition of diamond films. The plasma's optical emission spectra indicate an acceleration in the C 2 production rate at high power density. Deposition of a consistent diamond coating on intricate surfaces has historically posed a difficulty. This article presents the advancement in research on depositing a uniform diamond coating on three-dimensional (3D) silicon spheres, utilizing a faraday cage within a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) reactor. A self-consistent three-dimensional multi-physics field model has been established for simulating the microwave electric field and plasma inside a reactor with or without a faraday cage. Results indicate the cage effectively reduces the discharge at the top of the silicon sphere and improves uniformity of the distribution of the microwave electric field and plasma electron density on the sphere's surface. MPCVD trials have demonstrated that a powerful discharge takes place at the apex of the silicon sphere resulting in an excessive thermal gradient if the cage is not added. The apex of the silicon sphere is covered with a blend of diamond and graphite phases. Due to the excessive internal stress of the coating, approximately 50 % of the samples experience coating detachment. After the addition of the cage, the strong discharge is transferred to the top of the cage, effectively suppressing the microwave electric field and plasma inside the cage. Improved quality, reduced internal stress, and enhanced uniformity of the polycrystalline diamond coating are achievable on the silicon spheres within the cage. Moreover, this technique offers a novel approach to coat diamond on complex 3D geometries. Yeasts are used to produce a myriad of value-added compounds. Engineering yeasts into cost-efficient cell factories is greatly facilitated by the availability of genome editing tools. While traditional engineering techniques such as homologous recombination-based gene knockout and pathway integration continue to be widely used, novel genome editing systems including multiplexed approaches, bacteriophage integrases, CRISPR-Cas systems, and base editors are emerging as more powerful toolsets to accomplish rapid genome scale engineering and phenotype screening. In this review, we summarized the techniques which have been successfully implemented in model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as well as non-conventional yeast species. The mechanisms and applications of various genome engineering systems are discussed and general guidelines to expand genome editing systems from S. cerevisiae to other yeast species are also highlighted. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used as a phase change material (PCM) in thermal energy storage systems due to its high latent heat and chemical stability. However, practical application has been hindered by its low thermal conductivity and leakage issues. Therefore, developing shape-stable high thermal conductivity PCM is of great importance. In this study, new shape-stable composite PCM with high thermal conductivity and leak-prevention capabilities were designed. The porous carbon skeleton of diamond foam (DF) and dual-3D carbon nanotube-diamond foam (CDF) were prepared using the microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition method. The composite materials (DF/PEG and CDF/PEG) were produced by vacuum impregnation with PEG and skeletons. The results showed that CDF/PEG had the highest thermal conductivity, measuring 2.30 W·m−1·K−1, which is 707% higher than that of pure PEG. The employing of 3D networks of CNTs, which can improve the phonon mean free path in DF/PEG (1.79 W·m−1·K−1) while reducing phonon dispersion.The phonon vibration of dual-3D CDF plays an important role in heat transfer. PEG was physically absorbed and well-distributed in CDF, alleviating leakage of liquid PEG. The weight loss of CDF/PEG was only 25% at 70 °C for 120 s. Using CDF is an attractive and efficient strategy to increase the heat transfer of PEG and improve heat storage efficiency, alleviate the problem of poor shape-stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a significant platform chemical, 2, 3-butanediol (2, 3-BD) has found wide applications in industry. The success of microbial 2, 3-BD production was limited by the use of pathogenic microorganisms and low titer in engineered hosts. The utilization of cheaply available feedstock such as lignocellulose was another major challenge to achieve economic production of 2, 3-BD. To address those issues, engineering strategies including both genetic modifications and process optimization have been employed. In this review, we summarized the state-of-the-art progress in the biotechnological production of 2, 3-BD. Metabolic engineering and process engineering strategies were discussed. Pichia pastoris has been recognized as one of the most industrially important hosts for heterologous protein production. Despite its high protein productivity, the optimization of P. pastoris cultivation is still imperative due to strain- and product-specific challenges such as promoter strength, methanol utilization type and oxygen demand. To address the issues, strategies involving genetic and process engineering have been employed. Optimization of codon usage and gene dosage, as well as engineering of promoters, protein secretion pathways and methanol metabolic pathways have proved beneficial to innate protein expression levels. Large-scale production of proteins via high cell density fermentation additionally relies on the optimization of process parameters including methanol feed rate, induction temperature and specific growth rate. Recent progress related to the enhanced production of proteins in P. pastoris via various genetic engineering and cultivation strategies are reviewed. Insight into the regulation of the P. pastoris alcohol oxidase 1 (AOX1) promoter and the development of methanol-free systems are highlighted. Novel cultivation strategies such as mixed substrate feeding are discussed. Recent advances regarding substrate and product monitoring techniques are also summarized. Application of P. pastoris to the production of biodiesel and other value-added products via metabolic engineering are also reviewed. Novel xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) is in great demand due to its industrial significance. In this study, we have developed and characterized a novel xylanase-producing yeast strain. This mature xylanase gene xyn 11A consists of 870 base pairs and belongs to GH11 family. The gene sequence was optimized and synthesized, and was then cloned into yeast vector pGAPZαA under the control of the constitutive GAP promoter. SDS-PAGE analysis indicates that Xyn11A is extracellularly expressed as a glycosylated protein in P. pastoris . Xyn11A is optimally active at 70 °C and pH 7.4. This xylanase retained more than 90% of its activity after incubation at 50 °C and 60 °C for up to 1 h. Xyn11A is also stable over a wide range of pH (2.0–11.0). Most metal ions tested such as copper (Cu 2+ ) and lead (Pb 2+ ) have little inhibitory effects on Xyn11A. It is also resistant to pepsin and proteinase K digestion, retaining 80% and 90% of its activity after digestion at 37 °C for 1 h, respectively. Those superior properties make Xyn11A a robust xylanase with great potential for industrial use. Background The genetic background of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is considered a multi-genetic disorder with high heritability. Autistic children present with a higher prevalence of sleep disorders than has been observed in children with normal development. Some circadian-relevant genes have been associated with ASD (e.g., PER1 , PER2 , NPAS2 , MTNR1A , and MTNR1B ). Methods We analyzed 28 ASD patients (14 with sleep disorders and 14 without) and 23 control subjects of Japanese descent. The coding regions of 18 canonical clock genes and clock-controlled genes were sequenced. Detected mutations were verified by direct sequencing analysis, and additional control individuals were screened. Results Thirty-six base changes with amino acid changes were detected in 11 genes. Six missense changes were detected only in individuals with ASD with sleep disturbance: p.F498S in TIMELESS, p.S20R in NR1D1, p.R493C in PER3, p.H542R in CLOCK, p.L473S in ARNTL2, and p.A325V in MTNR1B. Six missense changes were detected only in individuals with ASD without sleep disturbance: p.S1241N in PER1, p.A325T in TIMELESS, p.S13T in ARNTL, p.G24E in MTNR1B, p.G24E in PER2, and p.T1177A in PER3. The p.R493C mutation in PER3 was detected in both groups. One missense change, p.P932L in PER2, was detected only in the control group. Mutations in NR1D1, CLOCK, and ARNTL2 were detected only in individuals with ASD with sleep disorder. The prevalence of the mutations detected only single time differed significantly among all ASD patients and controls ( p = 0.003). Two kinds of mutations detected only in individuals with ASD with sleep disorder, p.F498S in TIMELESS and p.R366Q in PER3, were considered to affect gene function by three different methods: PolyPhen-2, scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) prediction, and Mutation Taster ( www.mutationtaster.org ). The mutations p.S20R in NR1D1, p.H542R in CLOCK, p.L473S in ARNTL2, p.A325T in TIMELESS, p.S13T in ARNTL, and p.G24E in PER2 were diagnosed to negatively affect gene function by more than one of these methods. Conclusion Mutations in circadian-relevant genes affecting gene function are more frequent in patients with ASD than in controls. The micro-Doppler signal generated by the rotors of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) contains the structural features and motion information of the target, which can be used for detection and classification of the target, however, the standard STFT has the problems such as the lower time-frequency resolution and larger error in rotor parameter estimation, an FRFT (Fractional Fourier Transform)-FSST (STFT based synchrosqueezing)-based method for micro-Doppler signal detection and parameter estimation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the FRFT is used in the proposed method to eliminate the influence of the velocity and acceleration of the target on the time-frequency features of the echo signal from the rotors. Secondly, the higher time-frequency resolution of FSST is used to extract the time-frequency features of micro-Doppler signals. Moreover, the specific solution methodologies for the selection of window length in STFT and the estimation of rotor parameters are given in the proposed method. Yarrowia lipolytica , an oleaginous yeast with the GRAS status, has been developed as a platform for the chemical production. Promoter engineering is an important approach to regulating gene expression at the transcriptional level, which is of great significance in constructing microbial cell factories. Although some work on promoter study has been carried out in Y. lipolytica , obtained achievements still need further replenishment and development, compared explicitly with Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Bacillus subtilis , and other microorganisms. For this, we screened 81 endogenous promoters in Y. lipolytica , mainly involved in carbon metabolism and nitrogen metabolism. As a result, we obtained 15 strong promoters, 41 medium strength promoters, and 25 weak promoters, with the strength spanning from 0.06 % to 1.60-fold of P TEF promoter. Moreover, as a proof-of-concept, the identified promoter library was applied for expressing UDP-glycosyltransferase to produce salidroside, resulting in a production of 95.64 mg/l in shake flask, which is 3.92-times that of the parental strain. In general, our study provides a unique and available endogenous promoter library for Y. lipolytica. This study was aimed to provide basic information about stress perceptions among overseas college students in China. In addition, it was also aimed at determining whether differences exist between cultures in their ways of perceiving stressors. To attain the research goals, Study Abroad Stress Survey (SASS) was administered to 82 Africans (46 men and 36 women), and 74 Westerners (32 men and 42 women) in 11 universities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Percentages of subjects' responses on SASS items were calculated to judge variations that exist between Africans and Westerners and between male and female in their perception of stressors. Results indicated that academic and interpersonal sources of stress were the most common stressors perceived by the two groups. High pressure and challenges perceived by both African and Western students were classified as daily strains. No group differences existed in subtotal perceptions for the four categories of stress measured. Group variations existed only in their sub-divisional areas of stress. Both male and female students tend to experience the highest stress levels due to daily strains. Minor differences in perception of stressors such as attaining lower grades, missing too many classes, and working with unfamiliar peoples were concluded between male and female students. The study has suggested a need for cross-cultural orientation of students in an effort to promote effective coping and health during a study abroad experience which will offer them an opportunity to learn and grow. Unlabelled Image • Annual consumption of phosphate fertilizer in China has decreased after 2014. • Mean content of Cd was 0.75 mg/kg based on 1222 phosphate fertilizer samples. • MAP/DAP was main sources of Cd input from phosphate fertilizer in 2016. • The spatial and temporal distribution of Cd input from phosphate fertilizer was investigated. Phosphate fertilizer applications are an important source of soil Cd in China. However, the input of Cd from phosphate fertilizer has always been neglected in China because of its low content. In this paper, we calculated the Cd input from phosphate fertilizer in China during 2006–2016. According to the data, the total phosphate fertilizer consumption and agriculture application rate tended to decrease after 2014. In 2016, the phosphate fertilizer application rate ranged from 12.14 to 99.38 kg/ha with a mean value of 42.70 kg/ha, and excessive fertilizer application occurred in Xinjiang, Henan, and Hubei Provinces. The Cd content in phosphate fertilizer was 0.75 mg/kg based on 1222 samples. The national Cd input from phosphate fertilizer was estimated to be 10.52 tons in 2016, with DAP/MAP being the largest contributor, accounting for 83.31% of the total input. Gastrodin, a phenolic glycoside, is a prominent component of Gastrodia elata , which is renowned for its sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective activities. Engineering heterologous production of plant natural products in microbial host represents a safe, cost-effective, and scalable alternative to plant extraction. Here, we present the construction of an engineered Yarrowia lipolytica yeast that achieves a high-titer production of gastrodin. We systematically refactored the yeast genome by enhancing the flux of the shikimate pathway and optimizing the glucosyl transfer system. We introduced more than five dozen of genetic modifications onto the yeast genome, including enzyme screening, alleviation of rate-limiting steps, promoter selection, genomic integration site optimization, downregulation of competing pathways, and elimination of gastrodin degradation. Meanwhile, we developed a Copper-induced Antisense-Transcriptional Regulation (CATR) tool. The developed CATR toolkit achieved dynamic repression and activation of violacein synthesis through the addition of copper in Y. lipolytica. This strategy was further used to dynamically regulate the pyruvate kinase node to effectively redirect glycolytic flux towards the shikimate pathway while maintaining cell growth at proper rate. Taken together, these efforts resulted in 9477.1 mg/L of gastrodin in shaking flaks and 13.4 g/L of gastrodin with a yield of 0.149 g/g glucose in a 5-L bioreactor, highlighting the potential for large-scale and sustainable production of gastrodin from microbial fermentation. • Heterologous enzymes of the gastrodin pathway have been re-screened. • Various endogenous promoters and genomic locus have been characterized. • A novel CATR tool was designed for regulating the pyruvate kinase node. • The engineering yeast gave a titer of 13.4 g/L gastrodin in a 5-L bioreactor. Diamond is a highly attractive material for many applications in material science, engineering, chemistry, and biology because of its favorable properties. The preparation of large-area freestanding diamond plate can greatly reduce the production cost of diamond and promote the industrialization of diamond. In this study, the dual-magnetic field mode was introduced to optimize the magnetic field distribution in direct current arc plasma jet chemical vapor deposition (DC Jet CVD) system, and the arc plasma was effectively controlled under the coupling of electric field and magnetic field. The uniformity of the plasma distribution above the substrate surface is significantly improved, resulting in long-term stable and uniform growth of the 8-inch freestanding diamond plate. The influence of dual-magnetic field mode on magnetic field generation, arc feature, and reactive group distribution was studied. 8-inch freestanding diamond plates with an average thickness of 2.8 mm were prepared by dual-magnetic controlled DC Jet CVD. The results showed that the 8-inch diamond plate preferred a high (220) orientation, and the deviation of thickness of which was around 10 % of the averaged values. Raman spectroscopy of diamond revealed a 6.6 cm−1 of full width at half maximum (FWHM) and calculated 1.20 GPa compressive stress in the 8-inch diamond plate. By means of mechanical and thermal property measurements, the large area diamond plate shows a robust structure with the average values of three-point bending fracture strength of 987.2 MPa, and extremely high thermal conductivity of 1797.8 W/(m·k) as well. The deviation of three-point bending fracture strength and the thermal conductivity over the 8-inch diamond plate was around 7.9 % and 12.6 % of the respective averaged values. Background: 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) is a bulk platform chemical with various potential applications such as aviation fuel. 2,3-BD has three optical isomers: (2R, 3R)-, (2S, 3S)- and meso-2,3-BD. Optically pure 2,3-BD is a crucial precursor for the chiral synthesis and it can also be used as anti-freeze agent due to its low freezing point. 2,3-BD has been produced in both native and non-native hosts. Several pathogenic bacteria were reported to produce 2,3-BD in mixture of its optical isomers including Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca. Engineered hosts based on episomal plasmid expression such as Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Bacillus subtilis are not ideal for industrial fermentation due to plasmid instability. Results: Pichia pastoris is generally regarded as safe and a well-established host for high-level heterologous protein production. To produce pure (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD enantiomer, we developed a P. pastoris strain by introducing a synthetic pathway. The alsS and alsD genes from B. subtilis were codon-optimized and synthesized. The BDH1 gene from S. cerevisiae was cloned. These three pathway genes were integrated into the genome of P. pastoris and expressed under the control of GAP promoter. Production of (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD was achieved using glucose as feedstock. The optical purity of (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD was more than 99%. The titer of (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD reached 12 g/L with 40 g/L glucose as carbon source in shake flask fermentation. The fermentation conditions including pH, agitation speeds and aeration rates were optimized in batch cultivations. The highest titer of (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD achieved in fed-batch fermentation using YPD media was 45 g/L. The titer of 2,3-BD was enhanced to 74.5 g/L through statistical medium optimization. Conclusions: The potential of engineering P. pastoris into a microbial cell factory for biofuel production was evaluated in this work using (2R, 3R)-2,3-BD as an example. An incubation experiment was executed on applying biochar as a soil remediation amendment to discuss an effect of the various addition rates on the speciation and bioavailability of heavy metals in mining-contaminated soil. The result showed that the content of Cd in soil was 9.51 times higher than the Huainan soil background values. The contents of Cu, Zn and As were 2.97, 1.60 and 1.42 times the background values, respectively, and the total contents of all heavy metals were higher than the standard values of soil environment quality GB15618-1995 set by the China Ministry of Environmental Protection. Speciation analysis indicated that Cu and Cd were mainly associated with the reducible fraction, while Zn and As were dominated by the residual fraction. After biochar was added to contaminated soil, the residual fractions of heavy metals increased, while the acid-soluble fractions reduced. According to the results of CaCl2 extraction experiment, CaCl2-extractable concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, and Cd were observed with a biochar dosage rate of 10%, which were 57.26%, 51.37%, 6.94% and 42.04% lower than those of control soil samples, respectively, but there were no obvious changes of CaCl2-extractable As. A piece of diamond film (Ø 125 mm) was polished based on prefabricated stress. The diamond film was glued to a metal workpiece at high temperatures. The difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between the diamond film and the workpiece was exploited to prefabricate stress in the middle of the two materials. This prefabricated stress had a compressive effect on the diamond film, offset the stress generated in the grinding and polishing process, and prevented the diamond film from cracking. The feasibility of the prestressing method was verified by a combination of experiments and finite element simulations. The prestressing method was used to bond the diamond film to a 10 mm-thick brass fixture at 20, 50, 70, and 90 °C. It was found that when the temperature of the bonded diamond film reached 90 °C, the increase in the prefabricated stress was −410.71 MPa. The finite element simulation results were found to be consistent with the experimental data. The diamond film was cooled down to room temperature after bonding at high temperatures to simulate the prefabricated stress generation process. The diamond film with the prefabricated stress was again heated to the bonding temperature to simulate the stress change caused by the frictional heat generated during the polishing process. The stress of the bonded sample increased when it was cooled down to room temperature. The stress on the diamond surface became smaller during the polishing process, and the stress almost disappeared with the rise in bonding temperature, verifying the viability of the prestressing method. People can implicitly learn a connection between linguistic forms and meanings, for example between specific determiners (e.g. this, that…) and the type of nouns to which they apply. Li et al (2013) recently found that transfer of form-meaning connections from a concrete domain (height) to an abstract domain (power) was achieved in a metaphor-consistent way without awareness, showing that unconscious knowledge can be abstract and flexibly deployed. The current study aims to determine whether people transfer knowledge of form-meaning connections not only from a concrete domain to an abstract one, but also vice versa, consistent with metaphor representation being bi-directional. With a similar paradigm as used by Li et al, participants learnt form- meaning connections of different domains (concrete vs. abstract) and then were tested on two kinds of generalizations (same and different domain generalization). As predicted, transfer of form-meaning connections occurred bidirectionally when structural knowledge was unconscious. Moreover, the present study also revealed that more transfer occurred between metaphorically related domains when judgment knowledge was conscious (intuition) rather than unconscious (guess). Abstract: Schizophrenia is associated with an impairment of prospective memory (PM) which refers to the ability to remember to carry out an intended action in the future. However, most of these studies were limited to chronic samples. The current study examined the event-based PM and time-based PM using a dual-task paradigm in 22 drug-naïve, first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients and 23 healthy controls. Results indicated that FEP patients performed significantly poorer than healthy controls in both event-based and time-based PM. However, the significant difference in time-based PM disappeared after controlling for working memory. Correlation analysis indicated that both types of PM did not correlate with positive symptoms or negative symptoms, duration of illness, or duration of untreated psychosis. However, time-based PM was correlated with the general psychopathology subscale of the PANSS. Taken together, these findings suggest that PM deficits are present in drug-naïve FEP patients; impairment of event-based PM appears to occur independently, whereas time-based PM impairment may be, in part, a secondary consequence of a working memory deficit. In this study, the effect of defects on fracture toughness in different directions was investigated. Two diamond films with a diameter of 122 mm and as-deposited thicknesses of 2.2 and 1.5 mm, respectively, were deposited by DC arc plasma jet chemical vapor deposition. To accurately obtain the fracture toughness, the films were ground and polished to 1.6 and 0.8 mm, respectively. The results indicate that many defects, including pores, are introduced into the films during the growth process, particularly on the side close to the growth surface in thicker film. The size of pores reaches micrometres, which affects the fracture toughness under loading in different directions. Due to the minimum grain size, both films exhibit a maximum toughness of 8.2 and 10.0 MPa·m1/2, respectively, with growth-surface cracks. For the thinner sample, the maximum value is followed by that of the edge-surface cracks. As the grain size of the edge surface falls between that of the growth surface and that of the nucleation surface, the results indicate that fracture toughness is affected by grain size. However, the number of pores near the growth side increases when the thickness exceeds 0.8 mm. Pores reduce the toughness, resulting in the minimum fracture toughness (6 MPa·m1/2) of the thicker diamond film with edge-surface laser cracks. The sample with an edge-surface sharp pre-crack has a similar fracture toughness of 5.6 MPa·m1/2. We have extended the dendritic growth model first proposed by Boettinger, Coriell and Trivedi (here termed EBCT) for microstructure simulations of rapidly solidified non-dilute alloys. The temperature-dependent distribution coefficient, obtained from calculations of phase equilibria, and the continuous growth model (CGM) were adopted in the present EBCT model to describe the solute trapping behaviors. The temperature dependence of the physical properties, which were not used in previous dendritic growth models, were also considered in the present EBCT model. These extensions allow the present EBCT model to be used for microstructure simulations of non-dilute alloys. The comparison of the present EBCT model with the BCT model proves that the considerations of the distribution coefficient and physical properties are necessary for microstructure simulations, especially for small particles with high undercoolings. Finally, the EBCT model was incorporated into the cellular automaton-finite element (CAFE) model to simulate microstructures of gas-atomized ASP30 high speed steel particles that were then compared with experimental results. Both the simulated and experimental results reveal that a columnar dendritic microstructure preferentially forms in small particles and an equiaxed microstructure forms otherwise. Self-contribution to the income (individual achievement) was an important factor which needs to be taken into individual’s fairness considerations. This study aimed at elucidating the modulation of self-contribution to the income, on recipient’s responses to unfairness in the Ultimatum Game. Eighteen participants were scanned while they were playing an adapted version of the Ultimatum Game as responders. Before splitting money, the proposer and the participant (responder) played the ball-guessing game. The responder’s contribution to the income was manipulated by both the participant’s and the proposer’s accuracy in the ball-guessing game. It turned out that the participants more often rejected unfair offers and gave lower fairness ratings when they played a more important part in the earnings. At the neural level, anterior insula, anterior cingulate cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and temporoparietal junction showed greater activities to unfairness when self-contribution increased, whereas ventral striatum and medial orbitofrontal gyrus showed higher activations to fair (vs unfair) offers in the other-contributed condition relative to the other two. Besides, the activations of right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during unfair offers showed positive correlation with rejection rates in the self-contributed condition. Abstract: Unfairness plays an important role in economic decision making. This fMRI study sought to investigate how the loss and the gain contexts could modulate behavioral and brain responses to unfairness by focusing on participants' rejection behaviors during an Ultimatum Game paradigm. Participants were scanned while they were playing the Ultimatum Game as responders in both loss and gain contexts, i.e. receiving ¥50 as gains and paying for ¥50 as losses. At the behavioral level, lower fairness ratings and higher rejection rates were revealed for unfair losses than unfair gains. At the neural level, left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral anterior insula, anterior cingulate cortex/anterior middle cingulate cortex and bilateral dorsal striatum were associated with rejection (vs. acceptance) in the loss context, but not in the gain context. Together, our data indicated that participants may experience more unfairness in UG and stronger desire to sanction social norm violations in the loss context than in the gain context, inducing more fairness-related neutral activities when rejecting (vs. accepting) unfair losses than unfair gains. Past researches showed that empathy for pain not only triggers a resonance mechanism between other and self, but also is modulated by contextual factors. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the present study demonstrated that short-term media violence exposure reduced both pain ratings and also the activation of anterior insula and anterior mid-cingulate cortex to other's pain. Behavioral studies revealed that people were less likely to endorse negative information as self-descriptive. Neuroimaging studies have tapped on the neural mechanism underlying intentional self-processing of negative information using self-reflection tasks. Given that human self-processing occurring in our daily life is more likely to be captured by tasks involving incidental self-processing (automatic associations between the self- and external stimuli), rather than tasks involving intentional self-processing, it could be presumed that the relationship between self- and negative emotion might be better reflected during incidental self-processing. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study aimed to explore incidental self-processing of negative information. To induce participants' incidental self-processing, we adopted negative and neutral words written by themselves or others as materials. They were scanned during judging whether the handwritten words were negative or neutral (additional non-self-task). Results revealed that incidental self-processing of negative information relied on the activation of left anterior insula, whereas medial prefrontal cortex activity was associated with incidental self-processing of neutral information. Abstract: Previous research has shown that people can implicitly acquire mappings between word forms and literal meanings (Williams, 2004, 2005). We argue, from the metaphor-representation and embodiment perspectives, that people can unconsciously establish mappings between word forms and not only literal but also metaphorical meanings. Using Williams’ (2005) paradigm, we found that transfer of form-meaning connections from a concrete domain (space) to an abstract domain (power) was achieved in a metaphor-consistent way without awareness. Our results support the view that unconscious knowledge can be flexibly deployed in an abstract way not previously explored in the implicit learning literature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We demonstrated unconscious learning of task-irrelevant perceptual regularities in a Serial Reaction Time (SRT) task in both visual and auditory domains. Participants were required to respond to different letters (‘F’ or ‘J’, experiment 1) or syllables (‘can’ or ‘you’, experiment 2) which occurred in random order. Unbeknownst to participants, the color (red, green, blue or yellow) of the two letters or the tone (1–4) of the syllables varied according to certain rules. Reaction times indicated that people indeed learnt both the color and tonal regularities indicating that task-irrelevant sequence structure can be learned perceptually. In a subsequent prediction test of knowledge of the color or tonal cues using subjective measures, we showed that people could acquire task irrelevant knowledge unconsciously. The self has long been regarded as a unique cognitive structure by virtue of its superior mnemonic abilities. Two separate effects result from this self memory facilitation: self-reference effect and self-descriptiveness effect in memory. Self-reference effect denotes that information processed with reference to the self is better remembered than information processed with reference to others, whereas self-descriptiveness effect indicates that items judged to be self-relevant is remembered better than items judged not to be relevant to self during self-reference task. Although there is a compelling connection between self-reference effect in memory and self mentalization processes indexed by the medial prefrontal activity, the underlying mechanisms of the self-descriptiveness effect in memory have remained underspecified. In the present fMRI study, we used a subsequent memory paradigm to examine the neural correlates of self-descriptiveness and self-reference effect in memory. Participants encoded personality traits while performing self-reference and other-reference task (judged the descriptiveness of the traits to themselves or a famous person 'Bruce Lee'), and then were given a test of recognition memory outside the scanner. It is revealed that the hippocampal activity corresponded with self-descriptiveness effect in memory, but the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex and perirhinal cortex related to self-reference effect in memory. Human empathy is not merely a resonance with others’ physical condition, but is modulated by social factors. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the present study demonstrated an increased brain empathic response to others in pain when they received no rather than a large reward, with increments of the ACC, aMCC, insula and postcentral gyrus in the pain matrix and temporoparietal junction. Abstract: The study aims to help characterize the sort of structures about which people can acquire unconscious knowledge. It is already well established that people can implicitly learn n-grams (chunks) and also repetition patterns. We explore the acquisition of unconscious structural knowledge of symmetry. Chinese Tang poetry uses a specific sort of mirror symmetry, an inversion rule with respect to the tones of characters in successive lines of verse. We show, using artificial poetry to control both n-gram structure and repetition patterns, that people can implicitly learn to discriminate inversions from non-inversions, presenting a challenge to existing models of implicit learning. Abstract: We investigated the implicit learning of a linguistically relevant variable (animacy) in a natural language context (namely, the relation of forms of determiners to semantics). Trial by trial subjective measures indicated that exposure to a form–animacy regularity led to unconscious knowledge of that regularity. Under the same conditions, people did not learn about another form–meaning regularity when a linguistically arbitrary variable was used instead of animacy (size relative to a dog). Abstract: An experiment explored the acquisition of conscious and unconscious knowledge of semantic prosody in a second language under incidental and intentional learning conditions. Semantic prosody is the conotational coloring of the semantics of a word, largely uncaptured by dictionary definitions. Contrary to some claims in the literature, we revealed that both conscious and unconscious knowledge were involved in the acquisition of semantic prosody. Intentional learning resulted in similar unconscious but more conscious knowledge than incidental learning. We propose two efficient numerical methods of evaluating the luminosity distance in the spatially flat Lambda cold dark matter universe. The first method is based on the Carlson symmetric form of elliptic integrals, which is highly accurate and can replace numerical quadratures. The second method, using a modified version of Hermite interpolation, is less accurate but involves only basic numerical operations and can be easily implemented. We compare our methods with other numerical approximation schemes and explore their respective features and limitations. Abstract: Background: Inhibition of return (IOR) has been tested in patients with schizophrenia with contradictory results. Some studies indicated that patients with schizophrenia have normal levels of IOR; however, other studies reported delayed or blunted IOR. Inconsistency in findings might be due to differences across studies in relevant aspects associated with disease, such as heterogeneity of the disorder, different medications, onset and severity of the illness. The present study was to explore different patterns of IOR in antipsychotic medication free first-episode schizophrenia and chronic schizophrenia. Methods: Forty two patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 44 patients with chronic schizophrenia, and 38 healthy controls were included in the study. All subjects went through a covert orienting of attention task with seven stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) intervals (400ms, 500ms, 600ms, 700ms, 800ms, 1200ms and 1500ms). Results: Compared with healthy controls, the magnitude and onset of IOR in first-episode patients with schizophrenia were intact. However, in patients with chronic schizophrenia, there was an attenuated cuing effect especially at SOA 700ms; in addition, there was a robust IOR until at SOAs 800ms or above. Moreover, the illness duration and the number of psychotic episodes were significantly correlated with the validity effect at SOAs 400ms and 600ms. Conclusion: Our study suggests that deficient IOR presents in chronic but not in first-episode patients with schizophrenia. IOR deficit in schizophrenia may begin during the course of illness and deteriorate over the course of illness. Our findings are consistent with the neurodegenerative model of schizophrenia. Given the prominent effect of experiencing the task, the player-spectator discrepancies are supposed to arise in the experiencing phase instead of the choosing phase. In the present study, the authors separated the experiencing role and the choosing role through a stylus maze task in which participants first performed in pairs-one as the player and the other as the spectator-and then chose from two rewarding options for themselves or their partners. The findings show that the experience as players induced a risk-seeking tendency in decision making, which suggests that it was the experiencing role, rather than the choosing role, that caused the difference of risk preference, at least for financially motivated groups and under similar task conditions. Abstract: Children’s recognition of familiar own-age peers was investigated. Chinese children (4-, 8-, and 14-year-olds) were asked to identify their classmates from photographs showing the entire face, the internal facial features only, the external facial features only, or the eyes, nose, or mouth only. Participants from all age groups were familiar with the faces used as stimuli for 1 academic year. The results showed that children from all age groups demonstrated an advantage for recognition of the internal facial features relative to their recognition of the external facial features. Thus, previous observations of a shift in reliance from external to internal facial features can be attributed to experience with faces rather than to age-related changes in face processing. The present study focuses on prospective memory in preschoolers. We specifically investigated the effects of age, retrospective memory, and task interruption on prospective memory performance. In the first experiment, testing 60 children aged 3, 4 and 5 years with a prospective memory task that required active ongoing task interruption we obtained an age effect indicating better prospective memory performance for the two older cohorts. Varying retrospective memory load did influence prospective memory response time but did not affect prospective memory accuracy. However, retrospective memory performance showed an age effect and individual differences in retrospective memory ability were related to individual differences in prospective memory performance, even after partialling age. In the second study, we applied a prospective memory task that did not require active ongoing task interruption. Here, testing 62 children aged 3, 4 and 5 years we still found an age effect in retrospective memory but neither an effect of age nor retrospective memory on prospective memory performance. It is concluded that preschoolers even at the age of 3 years can perform prospective memory tasks to a certain extent. Moreover, while retrospective memory still seems to be somewhat related to prospective memory in preschoolers, inhibitory control required for ongoing task interruption seems to be an especially important factor influencing task performance in preschoolers. Background: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCLs) are lysosomal storage disorders characterized by seizures, motor impairment, and loss of vision. Ceroid lipofuscinosis (CLN) gene mutations are the cause, but NCL cases arising from CLN6 mutations have not been described in China to date. The CLN6 protein, which plays a role in lysosomal function, is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein with seven transmembrane (TM) domains. It has a cytosolic-facing amino terminal domain and a luminal-facing carboxyl terminal domain, with six loops between the TM domains. Case presentation: Here we report a case involving a Chinese boy whose suspected diagnosis was a hereditary leukoencephalopathy, based on brain MRI imaging and epilepsy symptoms, language articulation disorders, ataxia, and unstable gait. The electroencephalogram showed epileptic discharges, and the brain MRI scan showed high signal intensity adjacent to the bilateral posterior horns of the lateral ventricles on T2-weighted images, along with cerebellar atrophy. Using next-generation sequencing for the genes in a panel for hereditary leukoencephalopathies, we detected a homozygous missense point mutation c.892G > A(p.Glu298Lys) in CLN6, and the variant was interpreted as pathogenic on in silico analysis. Absence of this mutation was confirmed in 259 controls. Late infantile NCL and secondary epilepsy were diagnosed, and oral sodium valproate was prescribed. The epilepsy was not well controlled, however, and the other signs had not improved at the 6-month follow-up. We also analyzed the loci of 31 CLN6 missense mutations, including those previously reported and the current one. We found that 22.6% (7/31) of the mutations are in the cytoplasmic domains, about 32.2% (10/31) are in the TM domains, and about 45.2% (14/31) are in the luminal domains. These mutations were mostly located in the TM3-TM4 loop (6/31), TM1-TM2 loop (4/31), and C-terminus (4/31), with none found in the TM4-TM5 loop, TM5-TM6 loop, or TM7. Conclusions: We report the first case in China of NCL caused by a CLN6 mutation, expanding the genotype options for NCLs. In practice, NCLs generally are not the initial suspected diagnosis for such cases. In our previous study, we screened autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients with and without sleep disorders for mutations in the coding regions of circadian-relevant genes, and detected mutations in several clock genes including NR1D1. Here, we further screened ASD patients for NR1D1 mutations and identified three novel mutations including a de novo heterozygous one c.1499 G > A (p.R500H). We then analyzed the role of Nr1d1 in the development of the cerebral cortex in mice. Acute knockdown of mouse Nr1d1 with in utero electroporation caused abnormal positioning of cortical neurons during corticogenesis. This aberrant phenotype was rescued by wild type Nr1d1, but not by the c.1499 G > A mutant. Time-lapse imaging revealed characteristic abnormal migration phenotypes in Nr1d1-deficient cortical neurons. When Nr1d1 was knocked down, axon extension and dendritic arbor formation of cortical neurons were also suppressed while proliferation of neuronal progenitors and stem cells at the ventricular zone was not affected. Taken together, Nr1d1 was found to play a pivotal role in corticogenesis via regulation of excitatory neuron migration and synaptic network formation.
