Abstract

Electrolyte design is critical for enabling next-generation batteries with higher energy densities. Hydrofluoroether (HFE) solvents have drawn a lot of attention as the electrolytes based on HFEs showed great promise to deliver highly desired properties, including high oxidative stability, ionic conductivity, as well as enhanced lithium metal compatibility. However, the structure-dynamics-properties relationships and design principles for high-performance HFE solvents are still poorly understood. Herein, we proposed four novel asymmetric HFE designs by systematically varying polyether and fluorocarbon structural building blocks. By leveraging molecular dynamics (MD) modeling to analyze the solvation structures and predict the properties of the corresponding 1 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) solutions, we downselected the most promising candidate based on high conductivity, solvation species distribution, and oxidative stability for extensive electrochemical characterizations. The formulated electrolyte demonstrated properties consistent with the predictions from the simulations and showed much-improved capacity retention as well as Coulombic efficiency compared to the baseline electrolytes when cycled in lithium metal cells. 15. Machine-learning-assisted material discovery of oxygen-rich highly porous carbon active materials for aqueous supercapacitors.

Abstract

Porous carbons are the active materials of choice for supercapacitor applications because of their power capability, long-term cycle stability, and wide operating temperatures. However, the development of carbon active materials with improved physicochemical and electrochemical properties is generally carried out via time-consuming and cost-ineffective experimental processes. In this regard, machine-learning technology provides a data-driven approach to examine previously reported research works to find the critical features for developing ideal carbon materials for supercapacitors. Here, we report the design of a machine-learning-derived activation strategy that uses sodium amide and cross-linked polymer precursors to synthesize highly porous carbons (i.e., with specific surface areas > 4000 m2/g). Tuning the pore size and oxygen content of the carbonaceous materials, we report a highly porous carbon-base electrode with 0.7 mg/cm2 of electrode mass loading that exhibits a high specific capacitance of 610 F/g in 1 M H2SO4. This result approaches the specific capacitance of a porous carbon electrode predicted by the machine learning approach. We also investigate the charge storage mechanism and electrolyte transport properties via step potential electrochemical spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements.

Abstract

We obtain some new characterizations of a variable version of Lipschitz spaces in terms of the boundedness of commutators of sharp maximal functions, fractional maximal functions or fractional maximal commutators in the context of the variable Lebesgue spaces, where the symbols of the commutators belong to the variable Lipschitz space. A useful tool is that a symbol $b$ belongs a variable Lipschitz space of pointwise type if and only if $b$ belongs to a variable Lipschitz space of integral type.

Abstract

Small amounts of high-capacity silicon-based materials are already used in the anode of commercial Li-ion batteries, helping increase their energy density. Despite their remarkable storage capability, silicon continuously reacts with the electrolyte, accelerating time-dependent cell performance fade. Nevertheless, very limited information is available on the specific consequences of this reactivity for the calendar aging of Li-ion cells. Here, we analyze aging effects on 450 mAh pouch cells containing 15 wt% of Si (and 73 wt% graphite) after storage at 21 oC for four years. We show that severe losses of Si capacity occurred due to particle isolation when cells were stored at high states of charge (SOC), but not when cells were fully discharged prior to storage. Impedance rise was also significantly higher when cells were kept at high SOCs and was mostly due to phenomena taking place at the cathode; the continuous electrolyte reduction at the anode did not lead to a major increase in bulk electrode resistance. A series of post-test characterization provided additional information on the effects of time and SOC on the calendar aging of Si-containing cells. Our study highlights the many challenges posed by Si during calendar aging and can inform future studies in the field.

Abstract

Li-ion batteries will lose both capacity and power over time due to calendar aging caused by slow parasitic processes that consume Li+ ions. Studying and mitigating these processes is traditionally an equally slow venture, which is especially taxing for the validation of new active materials and electrolyte additives. Here, we evaluate whether potentiostatic holds can be used to accelerate the diagnosis of Li+ loss during calendar aging. The technique is based on the idea that, under the right conditions, the current measured as the cell voltage is held constant can be correlated with the instantaneous rate of side reactions. Thus, in principle, these measurements could capture the rate of capacity fade in real time. In practice, we show that this method is incapable of quantitatively forecasting calendar aging trends. Instead, our study demonstrates that potentiostatic holds can be applied for initial qualitative screening of systems that exhibit promising long-term stability, which can be useful to shrink the parameter space for calendar aging studies. By facilitating the identification of improved formulations, this approach can help accelerate innovation in the battery industry.

Abstract

Rainstorm and the induced flood disaster often cause serious damage to transportation system, resulting in the loss of life and property. To improve the resilience of transportation system, this study proposes a framework for assessing the impacts of rainstorm and flood disaster on road network based on GPS data. The change ratio of traffic flow and congestion index are used to evaluate the disrupted and detour road sections caused by rainstorm. A method based on the change of traffic flow compared to the normal circumstances is proposed to identify the flood-damaged road sections. A case study in Beijing verifies the feasibility and practicality of the proposed framework, which can effectively assess the impacts of rainstorm from multiple spatial and temporal dimensions, identify the flood-damaged road sections, and supplement existing research.
