16. Semiconducting minerals participated extracellular electron transfer in red soil of Ningxia Plain, China.

Abstract

In recent years, exploring interactions between sunlight, semiconducting minerals and microorganisms in nature has attracted great attention. However, relatively little research has been conducted on the interaction between minerals and microorganisms in the plain areas of the Yellow River Basin under sunlight. In this study, the mineral composition and microbial community of red soil from the Ningxia Plain, China were analyzed. X–ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that red soil contained semiconducting minerals such as birnessite, hematite and goethite. 16S rRNA analysis found that electroactive microorganisms such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota were enriched in in–situ microbial community of red soil. Afterwards, electrochemical tests such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and I–t curves, indicated that red soil exhibited good semiconducting properties under light irradiation. Finally, a dual chamber system and electrochemical techniques were used to explore the electron transfer relationship between red soil and microorganisms. The open circuit voltage (350 mV) and maximum power density (1242.72 mW/m2) of red soil cathode system were significantly improved compared to blank graphite electrode, indicating that red soil could serve as electron acceptors for microbial extracellular respiration. Red soil electrode in live bacteria exhibited the highest photocurrent density (0.29 μA/cm2) and the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct) (223 Ω) under light conditions, indicating that red soil accelerated the rapid transfer of electrons, reduced polarization loss, and enhanced extracellular electron transfer (EET) process under light conditions. Abstract

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology holds significant promise for the production of clean energy and treatment of pollutants. Nevertheless, challenges such as low power generation efficiency and the high cost of electrode materials have impeded its widespread adoption. The porous microstructure of biochar and the exceptional photocatalytic properties of rutile endow it with promising catalytic potential. In this investigation, we synthesized a novel Rutile–Biochar (Rut-Bio) composite material using biochar as a carrier and natural rutile, and explored its effectiveness as a cathode catalyst to enhance the power generation efficiency of MFCs, as well as its application in remediating heavy metal pollution. Furthermore, the impact of visible light conditions on its performance enhancement was explored. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis validated the successful fabrication of rutile composites loaded with biochar. The maximum current density and power density achieved by the MFCs were 153.9 mA/m2 and 10.44 mW/m2, respectively, representing a substantial increase of 113.5% and 225% compared to the control group. In addition, biochar-supported rutile MFCs showed excellent degradation performance of heavy metal pollutants under light conditions. Within 7 h, the Cr6+ degradation rate reached 95%. In contrast to the blank control group, the removal efficiency of pollutants exhibited increases of 630.8%. The cyclic degradation experiments also showcased the remarkable stability of the system over multiple cycles. This study successfully integrated natural rutile and biochar to fabricate highly efficient cathode photocatalyst composites, which not only enhanced the power generation performance of MFCs but also presented an environmentally sustainable and economically viable method for addressing heavy metal pollution. Abstract

This article presents a fully differential high-dynamic-range direct-conversion receiver for sub-1-GHz band applications in a 180-nm CMOS technology. The integrated self-adaptive multipart automatic gain control (AGC) loops are designed to cope with large input signal. In the radio frequency (RF) domain, a gain-adjustable noise-canceling balun low-noise amplifier (LNA) and a high-linearity RF variable gain amplifier (VGA) are co-designed to keep a steady differential output power for the mixer stage. In baseband (BB), a novel gain distribution method is proposed to protect BB circuits from saturation. To prove the concept, one of the most typical and strict application scenarios in the sub-1-GHz band, digital television (DTV) standard, is analyzed and chosen as the design target. The receiver achieves a noise figure (NF) of 3.6–4.6 dB in the ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) band. A wide gain tuning range of 128.8 dB is realized in this work, featuring fully integrated AGC loops. The programmable bandwidth of the low-pass filter (LPF) can be adjusted from 1 to 4 MHz, supporting 2-/6-/7-/8-MHz signal channels. The maximum in-band third-order input-referred intercept point (IIP3) is 10 dBm under the conversion gain of 0 dB. The receiver consumes 49.56 mA from a 1.8-V voltage supply and occupies an area of 3.56 mm2.

Abstract

An area-efficient 28-GHz four-element phased-array transceiver front-end (TRx FE) is proposed in this article. Transmitter/receiver (T/R) switch, phase shifter (PS), and power combining/splitting network all use customized coupler-based structures to replace area-consuming quarter-wavelength ( $\lambda $ /4) transmission line (T-line) structures. In Tx mode, a three-stage power amplifier (PA) is designed by cascading a class-AB predriver amplifier, a deep class-AB driver amplifier, and a class-A output amplifier for high output power. In Rx mode, a two-stage low noise amplifier (LNA) is designed with a 3-bit resistive adjusting load for high dynamic range of input power. A coupler is adopted in the variable gain amplifier (VGA) to achieve constant phase during gain adjustment. The proposed TRx FE is fabricated in a 40-nm CMOS process. Measurement results show that output 1-dB compression point (OP1dB) of 14.99 dBm and saturated output power (OPsat) of 15.68 dBm with 25.2% power efficiency are achieved in each Tx element. In each Rx element, noise figure (NF) of 4.54 dB, input 1-dB compression point (IP1dB) of −10.15 dBm, and maximum gain of 26.3 dB with 56.1-mW power consumption are realized. The gain range of Rx/Tx mode is 9.9–26.3 dB/24.2–44.6 dB with a resolution of 0.3 dB and phase variation less than 2° at 28 GHz. Thanks to the area-efficient coupler-based structures, the phased-array TRx FE occupies an area of 0.42 mm2 for each element and 0.084 mm2 for total area of combiner/splitter, achieving high area efficiency for Ka-band phased-array TRx FEs.
