15. Archaism as cultural distinction : woodblock book publishing during the Mao Era, 1949-1976

Abstract

This PhD thesis examines woodblock book publishing during the radical years of Mao’s life time, when thread-bound books were criticised as representing the symbol of the old literati culture by the CCP government. This very political authority paradoxically subsidised and encouraged the publication of thirteen fine woodblock books, including the unique woodblock edition of The Communist Manifesto. Using vast amount of both unpublished and published archival materials and personal interviews, this project analyses the production, dissemination and the circulating culture of woodblock publications during the Mao Era 1949–1976. It argues that archaism, as an essential feature of elite book culture, continued into the PRC through woodblock publishing practices and began to function as a type of distinction for the CCP elite group. Classic theories of both the history of woodblock publishing and archaism see 1949 as the watershed, after which both cultural practices were discouraged by the CCP political authority. This thesis provides a new perspective in studying the continuity of Chinese book culture, amends details in woodblock production in a modern era, and discloses the complex relations between archaism and the CCP ideology as a cultural system. All these will fill the gap in research on the history of woodblock books and technology, contributing new approaches and new materials of Maoist book culture to Chinese studies as a whole.

19. Association Between Prediabetes and Risk, Mortality of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

Background: As the high-risk stage of diabetes, the role of prediabetes in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we undertook a meta-analysis to investigate the potential association between the prediabetic stage and HCC. Methods: In this study, two independent investigators conducted a comprehensive search for relevant articles published up until May 2023 in several databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. The results were then summarized using STATA 12.0 software. Results: Our analysis included a total of 6 cohort studies involving 1,490,752 participants, as well as 1 case–control study with 220 participants. The research aimed to examine the association between prediabetes and the risk of HCC. Our meta-analysis revealed that prediabetes was significantly associated with an elevated risk of HCC (odds ratio (OR)/relative risk (RR) = 1.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06 to 1.48, I2 = 57.2%, p = 0.012), using a random-effects model. Moreover, four cohort studies, encompassing 1,362,847 participants, explored the relationship between prediabetes and HCC mortality. The meta-analysis showed that prediabetes was associated with a higher mortality rate of HCC, also utilizing a random-effects model (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.36, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.81, I2 = 55.8%, p = 0.060). Conclusions: Overall, our findings highlight a significant association between prediabetes and an increased risk of HCC and suggest that prediabetes may also contribute to higher mortality rates among HCC patients. Abstract

Belief propagation (BP) decoder is a low decoding latency algorithm for polar codes. However, the block error rate (BLER) performance of the BP decoder is inferior to the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided successive cancellation list (CA-SCL) decoder with medium list size for polar codes. Thus, in this paper, we introduce a bit-flip method into the belief propagation list (BPL) decoder and propose a BPL bit-flip (BPLF) decoder to improve the BLER performance of BP-based decoder for polar codes. The proposed decoder is based on a CRC-aided belief propagation list (CA-BPL) decoder, and the error-prone bits are obtained from the decoded result to construct flip bits set (FBS). The bits in FBS are flipped to obtain the correct decoding result. Moreover, the simulation results show that the BLER of the proposed BPLF decoder is significantly superior to that of the CA-BPL despite having the same list size, e.g., there is 0.75 dB gain at BLER = 10−4 with list size 64. Furthermore, the decoding complexity and latency of the proposed BPLF decoder are only slightly higher than those of CA-BPL decoder with the same list size in medium to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region.

Abstract

Rationale Groove pancreatitis (GP) is a rare form of chronic pancreatitis. Since GP presents with nonspecific symptoms, it can be challenging to diagnose. Duodenal obstruction is often caused by malignant diseases; however, when associated with acute pancreatitis, it is rarely induced by groove pancreatitis. Patient's concerns A 56-year-old man who presented with acute pancreatitis complained of recurrent upper abdominal discomfort. His concomitant symptoms included abdominal pain, postprandial nausea, and vomiting. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen showed thickening of the duodenum wall. Gastrointestinal radiographs and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed an obstruction of the descending duodenum. Diagnosis The pathologic diagnosis was groove pancreatitis. Interventions The patient underwent gastrojejunostomy to relieve the obstruction. Outcomes The patient had an uneventful recovery with no complications. Lessons Groove pancreatitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with acute pancreatitis and duodenal obstruction. These data can help to make a precise diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Abstract

Though BP-based polar decoder has low latency, the BLER performance of it does not outperform the CA-SCL decoder with a large list size, which prevents BP-based decoder from its practical implementation. In this paper, we propose a noise-aided belief propagation list bit-flip (NA-BPLF) decoder by merging BPL with artificial noise and bit flipping. In NA-BPLF, when CA-BPL decoding fails, the error-prone bit is chosen for the bit flipping operations based on the decoding results generated by the previous CA-BPL decoding process, and then artificial noise is superimposed. Simulation results show that NA-BPLF achieves better BLER performance which is close to large list size CA-SCL decoder while still keeping the low latency.
