We present results and discuss methods for computing the melting temperature of dense molecular hydrogen using a machine learned model trained on quantum Monte Carlo data. In this newly trained model, we emphasize the importance of accurate total energies in the training. We integrate a two phase method for estimating the melting temperature with estimates from the Clausius-Clapeyron relation to provide a more accurate melting curve from the model. We make detailed predictions of the melting temperature, solid and liquid volumes, latent heat and internal energy from 50 GPa to 180 GPa for both classical hydrogen and quantum hydrogen. At pressures of roughly 173 GPa and 1635K, we observe molecular dissociation in the liquid phase. The two-dimensional (2D) homogeneous electron gas (HEG) is a fundamental model in quantum many-body physics. It is important to theoretical and computational studies, where exchange-correlation energies computed in it serve as the foundation for density-functional calculations. It is also of direct relevance to a variety of experimental settings, especially with the rapid recent growth in 2D materials and moir\'e systems. In these experiments, metallic gates are often present, which screen the Coulomb interaction between electrons. The effect of the screening can qualitatively change the behavior of the 2D HEG, and requires accurate many-body computations to capture. In this work, we perform state-of-the-art diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations in the 2D HEG subjected to symmetric dual-gate screening. We systematically compute the correlation energy across a range of densities and gate separations for both spin unpolarized and fully polarized systems. A global fit is obtained for the correlation energy, using these data and imposing various limiting behaviors obtained from perturbation analysis. The new functional will allow density-functional calculations to be performed for a variety of realistic experimental setups which can accurately account for the presence of gates. The exploration of quantum phases in moir\'e systems has drawn intense experimental and theoretical efforts. The realization of honeycomb symmetry has been a recent focus. The combination of strong interaction and honeycomb symmetry can lead to exotic electronic states such as fractional Chern insulator, unconventional superconductor, and quantum spin liquid. Accurate computations in such systems, with reliable treatment of strong long-ranged Coulomb interaction and approaching the large system sizes to extract thermodynamic phases, are mostly missing. We study the two-dimensional electron gas on a honeycomb moir\'e lattice at quarter filling, using fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo. The ground state phases of this important model are determined in the parameter regime relevant to current experiments. With increasing moir\'e potential, the systems transitions from a paramagnetic metal to an itinerant ferromagnetic semimetal and then a charge-density-wave insulator.

The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is a fundamental model, which is drawing increasing interest because of recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies of 2D materials. Current understanding of the ground state of the 2DEG relies on quantum Monte Carlo calculations, based on variational comparisons of different ansatze for different phases. We use a single variational ansatz, a general backflow-type wave function using a message-passing neural quantum state architecture, for a unified description across the entire density range. The variational optimization consistently leads to lower ground-state energies than previous best results. Transition into a Wigner crystal (WC) phase occurs automatically at rs = 37 +/- 1, a density lower than currently believed. Between the liquid and WC phases, the same ansatz and variational search strongly suggest the existence of intermediate states in a broad range of densities, with enhanced short-range nematic spin correlations.

Strongly interacting electronic systems possess rich phase diagrams resulting from the competition between different quantum ground states. A general mechanism that relieves this frustration is the emergence of microemulsion phases, where regions of different phase self-organize across multiple length scales. The experimental characterization of these phases often poses significant challenges, as the long-range Coulomb interaction microscopically mingles the competing states. Here, we use cryogenic reflectance and magneto-optical spectroscopy to observe the signatures of the mixed state between an electronic Wigner crystal and an electron liquid in a MoSe2 monolayer. We find that the transit into this 'microemulsion' state is marked by anomalies in exciton reflectance, spin susceptibility, and Umklapp scattering, establishing it as a distinct phase of electronic matter. Our study of the two-dimensional electronic microemulsion phase elucidates the physics of novel correlated electron states with strong Coulomb interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) can play a very important role in generating accurate data needed for constructing potential energy surfaces. We argue that QMC has advantages in terms of a smaller systematic bias and an ability to cover phase space more completely. The stochastic noise can ease the training of the machine learning model. We discuss how stochastic errors affect the generation of effective models by analyzing the errors within a linear least squares procedure, finding that there is an advantage to having many relatively imprecise data points for constructing models. We then analyze the effect of noise on a model of many-body silicon finding that noise in some situations improves the resulting model. We then study the effect of QMC noise on two machine learning models of dense hydrogen used in a recent study of its phase diagram. The noise enable us to estimate the errors in the model. We conclude with a discussion of future research problems.

Transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices provide an exciting new platform for exploring and understanding a variety of phases of matter. The moir\'e continuum Hamiltonian, of two-dimensional jellium in a modulating potential, provides a fundamental model for such systems. Accurate computations with this model are essential for interpreting experimental observations and making predictions for future explorations. In this work, we combine two complementary quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo, to study the ground state of this Hamiltonian. We observe a metal-insulator transition between a paramagnetic and a $120^\circ$ N\'eel ordered state as the moir\'e potential depth and the interaction strength are varied. We find significant differences from existing results by Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalization studies. In addition, we benchmark density-functional theory, and suggest an optimal hybrid functional which best approximates our QMC results., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Added supplementary materials

We survey the phase diagram of high-pressure molecular hydrogen with path integral molecular dynamics using a machine-learned interatomic potential trained with Quantum Monte Carlo forces and energies. Besides the HCP and C2/c-24 phases, we find two new stable phases both with molecular centers in the Fmmm-4 structure, separated by a molecular orientation transition with temperature. The high temperature isotropic Fmmm-4 phase has a reentrant melting line with a maximum at higher temperature (1450K at 150GPa) than previously estimated and crosses the liquid-liquid transition line around 1200K and 200GPa., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, updated acknowledgment

For the Maxwell's equations in a Havriliak-Negami (H-N) dispersive medium, the associated energy dissipation law has not been settled at both continuous level and discrete level. In this paper, we rigorously show that the energy of the H-N model can be bounded by the initial energy and the model is well-posed. We analyse a backward Euler-type semi-discrete scheme, and prove that the modified discrete energy decays monotonically in time. Such a strong stability ensures that the scheme is unconditionally stable. We also introduce a fast temporal convolution algorithm to alleviate the burden of the history dependence in the polarisation relation involving the singular kernel with the Mittag-Leffler function with three parameters. We provide ample numerical results to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of a full-discrete scheme via a spectra-Galerkin method in two dimensions. Finally, we consider an interesting application in the recovery of complex relative permittivity and some related physical quantities.

We computed the Compton profile of solid and liquid lithium using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and compared with recent experimental measurements obtaining good agreement. Importantly, we find it crucial to account for proper core-valence orthogonalization and to address density differences when comparing with experiment. To account for disorder effects, we sampled finite-temperature configurations using molecular dynamics (MD), then performed diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations on each configuration. We used Slater-Jastrow wavefunctions and grand-canonical twist-averaged boundary conditions. A QMC pseudopotential correction, derived from an all-electron DMC simulation of the perfect crystal was also used. Our calculations provide the first all-electron QMC benchmark for the Compton profile of lithium crystal and pseudopotential-corrected QMC Compton profiles for both the liquid and solid., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; supplemental materials 6 pages, 4 figures

We develop a method for calculating the fundamental electronic gap of semiconductors and insulators using grand canonical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We discuss the origin of the bias introduced by supercell calculations of finite size and show how to correct the leading and subleading finite size errors either based on observables accessible in the finite-sized simulations or from DFT calculations. In this paper, a new type of the discrete fractional Gr{\"o}nwall inequality is developed, which is applied to analyze the stability and convergence of a Galerkin spectral method for a linear time-fractional subdiffusion equation. Based on the temporal-spatial error splitting argument technique, the discrete fractional Gr{\"o}nwall inequality is also applied to prove the unconditional convergence of a semi-implicit Galerkin spectral method for a nonlinear time-fractional subdiffusion equation., Comment: 16 pages

QMCPACK is an open source quantum Monte Carlo package for ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It supports calculations of metallic and insulating solids, molecules, atoms, and some model Hamiltonians. Implemented real space quantum Monte Carlo algorithms include variational, diffusion, and reptation Monte Carlo. QMCPACK uses Slater-Jastrow type trial wave functions in conjunction with a sophisticated optimizer capable of optimizing tens of thousands of parameters. The orbital space auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method is also implemented, enabling cross validation between different highly accurate methods. The code is specifically optimized for calculations with large numbers of electrons on the latest high performance computing architectures, including multicore central processing unit (CPU) and graphical processing unit (GPU) systems. We detail the program's capabilities, outline its structure, and give examples of its use in current research calculations. The package is available at http://www.qmcpack.org .
