The creative cultural product design, relating to both typical regional cultures and traditional cultural elements, is a hot issue in recent years. However, there is still a lack of systematic and efficient designing methods to guide designing practices. In order to fill this research gap, this paper proposes a new design method based on F-AHP (Fuzzy-Analytic Hierarchy Process) and entropy computation to extract traditional cultural shape design elements from a set of images of cultural relics. Firstly, we collect a set of culture object related to descriptive and adjective words that can express users’ emotional perception and narrow down them into a shortlist via a fitness evaluation process. Secondly, we analyze and extract common shape elements with image processing tools and user choices. Thirdly, we create a full mapping between the shortlisted culture descriptive words and the identified common shape elements and determine the weighting of each shape element against each evaluation indicator through F-AHP. Fourthly, we construct decision-making matrix and extract key shape elements with high information entropy. Finally, we start designing products with extracted cultural elements. A case study of Han Dynasty potter figurines was conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Kansei adjectives have the advantage of close to consumers’ perception of a product. But consumers may show hesitation and opinion discrepancy while expressing their preferences through comparative Kansei adjectives. To address this, this article investigates hesitant linguistic expression and its application in product Kansei decision-making. An integrated framework is firstly presented based on hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (HFLTSs), which involves a consensus model for assessing consistency of consumers’ preferences, particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for adjusting Kansei opinions when agreement fails, and the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) for yielding ranked product solutions. An example of charging piles design was used to illustrate the necessity of considering consumers’ hesitation in Kansei decision-making. With the proposed method, the consensus level of consumers’ preferences is enhanced from 0.8339 to 0.9052, and the overall satisfaction degree is also improved. Furthermore, the results of Kansei decision-making through optimizing Kansei preferences are significantly different from that without optimization. This improvement demonstrates that hesitance and consensus change will influence design decision-making and they should be considered in product Kansei decision-making. The given example shows the validity and suitability of the proposed approach.

With the advent of experience economy, people are more pursuing the cultural meaning of products and spiritual satisfaction brought to them. The combination of design and culture is a trend of economic development. In this context, products with cultural characteristics have started hitting the market. Chinese traditional culture, with its beautiful and primitive visual arts and crafts, provides great potential for improving design value and gaining recognition in the global market. There is evidence that Chinese traditional culture is likely to become an important cultural element in future design applications. The purpose of this paper is to explore the connotation of Chinese traditional culture and explore its cultural characteristics. This article attempts to describe how to transform Chinese cultural features into modern product design to provide a good user experience and meet the users’ needs.

Product color plays a vital role in shaping brand style and affecting users’ purchase decision. However, users’ preferences about product color design schemes may vary due to their cognition differences. Although considering users’ perception of product color has been widely performed by industrial designers, it is not effective to support this activity. In order to provide users with plentiful product color solutions as well as embody users’ preference into product design process, involving users in interactive genetic algorithms (IGAs) is an effectual way to find optimum solutions. Nevertheless, cognition difference and uncertainty among users may lead to various understanding in line with IGA progressing. To address this issue, this study presents an advanced IGA by combining users’ cognition noise which includes cognition phase, intermediate phase, and fatigue phase. Trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are employed to represent uncertainty of users’ evaluations. An algorithm is designed to find key parameters through similarity calculation between RGB value and their area proportion of two individuals and users’ judgment. The interactive product color design process is put forward with an instance by comparing with an ordinary IGA. Results show that (1) knowledge background will significantly affect users’ cognition about product colors and (2) the proposed method is helpful to improve convergence speed and evolution efficiency with convergence increasing from 67.5% to 82.5% and overall average evolutionary generations decreasing from 18.15 to 15.825. It is promising that the proposed method can help reduce users’ cognition noise, promote convergence, and improve evolution efficiency of interactive product color design.

Due to the massive calculations of force feedback, and the difficulty in haptic scenes and graphic scenes refreshing, the real-time force feedback interactive technology in virtual model is studied. Based on the research of force feedback simulation model, a mechanical simulation model using material scrapers rate is presented. This model can calculate the scraping of force feedback according to the amount of material per unit time. The effectiveness and stability of this mechanical model is verified by experiments. The influencing factors of calculation precision and accuracy in this simulation model are pointed out. From the investigation on 12 students, we find that virtual model making system is relevant and efficient. The experiment results demonstrate that the adopted method can add an effective haptics to students and can be widely used in computer-aided industrial design field.

From the perspective of combination principles, product form is divided into several modules for extracting profile curves; applying Genetic Algorithm (GA), product form chromosomes are coded in tree structure, through crossover and mutation operators to generate new programs; the method of product semantics is introduced into the process of evolutionary computation to enhance the interactivity of evolutionary computation by fuzzification, in which designer can decide the orientation from the selected products and guarantee the results can reflect the designer's innovative ideas. With Visual Basic and Rhinoceros platform a product form innovative design system is developed.

Consumers’ Kansei needs reflect their perception about a product and always consist of a large number of adjectives. Reducing the dimension complexity of these needs to extract primary words not only enables the target product to be explicitly positioned, but also provides a convenient design basis for designers engaging in design work. Accordingly, this study employs a numerical design structure matrix (NDSM) by parameterizing a conventional DSM and integrating genetic algorithms to find optimum Kansei clusters. A four-point scale method is applied to assign link weights of every two Kansei adjectives as values of cells when constructing an NDSM. Genetic algorithms are used to cluster the Kansei NDSM and find optimum clusters. Furthermore, the process of the proposed method is presented. The details of the proposed approach are illustrated using an example of electronic scooter for Kansei needs clustering. The case study reveals that the proposed method is promising for clustering Kansei needs adjectives in product emotional design.

Accurate and fast target image recognition is an important function of applications such as remote sensing imaging and medical imaging. However, an operator such as speeded up robust feature (SURF) cannot be accurately matched in the recognition process of a target image. This led us to propose the use of a method capable of matching identification, i.e. binary robust invariant scalable keypoints (BRISK) operators, in combination with SURF operators. The proposed algorithm combines the accuracy of SURF operators and the rapidity of BRISK operators to obtain a quick and accurate way of matching. The initial matching of image feature extraction for targets is performed using the SURF-BRISK algorithm, and similarity measurements of feature matching are performed for the feature points of initial matching using the Hamming distance. Then, secondary fine matching is performed using the M-estimator Sample and Consensus (MSAC) algorithm to eliminate mismatched point pairs in order to achieve recognition of target images. Then, the three-dimensional coordinates of the work piece are obtained by using a binocular stereo vision system to provide location coordinates for the robots to grasp the work pieces accurately. In the experiment, stereo vision matching is conducted for targets obtained using the SURF-BRISK algorithm, and the location coordinates of targets are passed to the robot controller. The experimental results show that if the special geometric distortion is neglected, this method can be adapted for accurate positioning of the target; hence, it can identify the target in complex environments, access the location coordinates of the target, and achieve accurate robotic grasping of the work piece in real time.

Integrated product development is a model of new product development system, and also it is a product life cycle optimization method. Based on the research of integrated product development literatures, from the emergence of integrated product development, from the theoretical study, the framework and the analysis of development process, this paper sets up new views and puts forward some suggestions on the aspects that integrated product development needs to improve.
