5. Constant vorticity geophysical waves with centripetal forces and at arbitrary latitude

Abstract

We consider three-dimensional geophysical flows at arbitrary latitude and with constant vorticity beneath a wave train and above a flat bed in the $\beta$-plane approximation with centripetal forces. We consider the $f$-plane approximation as well as the $\beta$-plane approximation. For the $f$-plane approximation, we prove that there is no bounded solution. For the $\beta$-plane approximation, we show that the flow is necessarily irrotational and the free surface is necessarily flat if it exhibits a constant vorticity. Our results reveal some essential differences from those results in the literature, due to the presence of centripetal forces. Moreover, for the case exhibiting the surface tension, we prove that there are no flows exhibiting constant vorticity.

Abstract

Fruit size is a crucial agronomic trait in bottle gourd, impacting both yield and utility. Despite its significance, the regulatory mechanism governing fruit size in bottle gourd remains largely unknown. In this study, we used bottle gourd (small-fruited H28 and large-fruited H17) parent plants to measure the width and length of fruits at various developmental stages, revealing a single 'S' growth curve for fruit expansion. Paraffin section observations indicated that both cell number and size significantly influence bottle gourd fruit size. Through bulked segregant analysis and combined genotype–phenotype analysis, the candidate interval regulating fruit size was pinpointed to 17,747,353 bp–18,185,825 bp on chromosome 9, encompassing 0.44 Mb and including 44 genes. Parental fruits in the rapid expansion stage were subjected to RNA-seq, highlighting that differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in pathways related to cell wall biosynthesis, sugar metabolism, and hormone signaling. Transcriptome and resequencing analysis, combined with gene function annotation, identified six genes within the localized region as potential regulators of fruit size. This study not only maps the candidate interval of genes influencing fruit size in bottle gourd through forward genetics, but also offers new insights into the potential molecular mechanisms underlying this trait through transcriptome analysis. 27. Play in Chinese kindergartens : teachers' perceptions and practices

Abstract

Play is widely recognized as a natural ability and fundamental right of children. In educational settings, the idea of integrating play into early childhood education to promote children’s learning and development has been continually advocated by researchers, policy-makers and practitioners. However, as play is a culturally situated concept, it may be understood differently by teachers within different social and cultural contexts in terms of its function and value to children’s development and its relation with learning. Moreover, Chinese educational reform underlines play-based pedagogy in early childhood education. This raise questions about how play is interpreted by Chinese early childhood teachers as a vehicle for early learning and motivate the current study to locate play in a Chinese context to explore kindergarten teachers’ understanding and execution of play in practice. A qualitative design with in-depth, open-ended interviews, persistent classroom observation, and documentary review was employed. Twenty-four early childhood education practitioners, including three administrators, three interest class teachers and eighteen teachers, two from each of nine classes in three different Chinese kindergartens were interviewed and the interactions between the teachers and individual children were video-recorded during playtime. A number of relevant official policy documents, regulations and kindergarten curriculum plans were collected to offer context for the research. Data was analyzed by adopting content analysis and constant comparison. The findings show that the teachers construct a notion of ‘eduplay’ in the kindergarten educational settings, which emphasizes more on the instrumental value than the intrinsic value of play. A combination of a cultural transmission/direct approach and an emergent/responsive approach is revealed in their practice. The teachers adopt diverse roles in play. Although didactic features are evident in teachers’ role in play, the teachers show strong desire to play a ‘whole teacher’ role and establish a parallel relationship with children. They share a similar view that teachers’ active involvement can contribute to children’s learning in play and they are more likely to exert their influence on children’s play through direct intervention than play provision. Moreover, the findings reveal that the teacher-child interactions in play in this study are less likely to scaffold children’s learning. There seems to be a tension between teachers’ concerns of safety and children’s intense involvement in play. Three main influences, including the influences from the cultural context, the influences from the institutional context, and the influences from the teachers’ personal context were identified affecting the implementation of play in kindergarten practice.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider equatorial flows with Coriolis and centripetal forces, with constant vorticity beneath a two-dimensional solitary wave and above a flat bed in the f -plane approximation equations. We prove that the flow must be steady, two-dimensional, decayed and the vorticity may have only one nonzero component, which points in the horizontal direction orthogonal to the direction of wave propagation. Moreover, based on the vorticity equation and analytical techniques, we prove that the free surface of the flow exhibiting constant horizontal vorticity can only be two-dimensional. Abstract

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a Quasi-5G technology that will provide coverage for massive number of low-power consumption applications. Hence, the potential massive random access (RA) users call for a new RA scheme. In this paper, based on the key ideas of non-orthogonal multiple access and successive interference cancellation, the NB-IoT non-orthogonal random access (NB-NORA) scheme has been proposed to provide a more effective access performance for NB-IoT system. Further, the RA preamble (MSG1) transmission collision probability and initial layer 3 message (MSG3) outage performances are analyzed based on stochastic geometry, which is compared with the traditional NB-IoT orthogonal random access (NB-ORA) scheme. Simulation results show that the maximum throughput of MSG1 within NB-NORA scheme is double that within NB-ORA scheme, and the successful RA probability of NB-NORA is increased by about 75%.
