Abstract

Phase-sensitive demodulation (PSD) is important for signal conditioning and communication. This paper introduces an approach to teaching PSD for signal conditioning to undergraduate science and engineering students. The goal is to help students understand the principles of PSD for signal conditioning because they can see waveforms at various test points and the effect of the phase angle on the output of a PSD circuit using conventional laboratory equipment. Students can also gain practical skills by building electronic circuits, including a switch-based PSD circuit, a phase shifter, a switch-driving circuit, and a low-pass filter, on a breadboard using real electronic components. 40. A PIλDμ-Controlled Calderon’s Method for Triple-Valued Electrical Capacitance Tomography

Abstract

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) utilizes mutual capacitances at the boundary of the region of interest for noninvasive and contactless visualization of the distribution within the field, but the low quality of reconstructed image is a major constraint to its application. A $\text {PI}^{\lambda }\text {D}^{\mu }$ -controlled Calderon’s method is proposed by using the sparsity and low rankness of the triple-valued distributions and online tuning ability of the $\text {PI}^{\lambda }\text {D}^{\mu }$ control scheme. The iterations of the method are realized in a closed control loop. The fractional $\text {PI}^{\lambda }\text {D}^{\mu }$ the controller reduces the difference between the measured capacitance matrix and the estimated capacitance matrix derived from the reconstructed distribution. Calderon’s method is fed by the controller output and generates enhanced edges in the reconstructed image via a Sobel–Feldman operator. Also, the smooth segmentation function is then adopted to fuse the triple values known in advance to improve the image quality. Both numerical simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed method yields images of well-defined edges and shapes for triple-valued distributions.

42. Investigation of relaxation factor in landweber iterative algorithm for electrical capacitance tomography

Abstract

It is crucial to select a suitable relaxation factor in iterative image reconstruction algorithms (e.g. Landweber iterative algorithm) for electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) because it affects the convergence. By simulation, it is found notably that the relaxation factor should be selected adaptively according to the sensor structure (e.g. the number of electrodes) and the permittivity distribution in capacitance measurements. With different number of electrodes and four typical permittivity distributions, the relaxation factor and the related convergence are investigated in consideration of the change in relative image error. It is shown that the relaxation factor can be chosen based on the upper boundary of all relaxation factors. The conclusions in this paper can be used for practical industrial processes, regarding the adaptive selection of relaxation factor and the number of iterations needed.

Abstract

Particle drying in fluidized beds is a common and important process in food and pharmaceutical industry. However, the fluidization characteristic is complex due to the moisture content change in the process and it is a challenge to monitor the flow characteristics by conventional measurement approach, likes pressure and thermal probes. In this research, process tomography including capacitance and microwave tomographic systems are used to investigate the flow characteristics in a fluidized bed dryer with high-moisture content particles. Static tests were firstly carried out to investigate the image characteristics based on microwave tomography (MWT) and electrical capacitance tomography (ECT). The imaging ability was compared between MWT and ECT. In the dynamic tests, the drying process for particles with high-moisture content was monitored on-line by MWT and ECT separately. The static test results show that the high calibration for ECT is critical and particles with low moisture content should be used for high calibration of an ECT system to achieve high quality images for the dynamic tests. For the high calibration of ECT, there is an upper limit for the moisture content. With a fixed calibration background, the moisture content of particles should not exceed this upper limit value. MWT basically has no limitation on the moisture content both for high calibration and measurement. Dynamic test results illustrate that MWT is a good option to monitor high-moisture content particles drying in a fluidized bed and it is possible to combine ECT together to identify the gas–solids flow regime transit and to determine the moisture content by MWT in a fluidized bed drying process.
