10. Combination of Low Fluctuation of Temperature with TiO2 Photocatalytic/Ozone for the Quality Maintenance of Postharvest Peach

Abstract

Chilling injury, tissue browning, and fungal infection are the major problems of peach fruit during post-harvest storage. In this study, a precise temperature control cold storage with low-temperature fluctuation (LFT) and internal circulation flow system is designed. An ozone (O3) generator and a (titanium dioxide) TiO2 photocatalytic reactor were applied to cold storage to investigate the variation of LFT combined with ozone fumigation and a TiO2 photocatalytic reactor in the efficiency of delaying ripening and maintaining peach fruit quality. Results showed that the temperature fluctuation with the improved control system was only &plusmn, 0.1 to &plusmn, 0.2 &deg, C compared with that of &plusmn, 0.5 to &plusmn, 1.0 &deg, C in conventional cold storage. LFT significantly reduced the chilling injury of peach fruit during storage. Although LFT combined with fumigation of 200 mg m&minus, 3 ozone periodical treatment slightly damaged the peach fruit after 40 d of storage, its combination with the TiO2 photocatalytic system significantly improved the postharvest storage quality of the fruit. This treatment maintained higher titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), better firmness, color, microstructure, and lower decay rate, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities, total phenol accumulation, respiratory intensity, ethylene production, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content during 60 d of storage. All the results show that LFT combined with the TiO2 photocatalytic system might be a promising technology for quality preservation in peach fruit storage.

Abstract

With higher efficiency, brightness and reliability than traditional light sources, LED has been widely applied in automotive headlamps. The smaller volume and higher power density of a LED package drive the design of automotive headlamps with LED matrix model, such as adaptive driving beam (ADB) system. This paper proposed a matrix automotive headlamp module with rectangle lens array to balance the contradiction between improving the visual condition of driver in the nighttime driving and reducing the impact of glare on others from the opposite direction. Firstly, according to the requirements on light distribution provided by the GB 25991 regulation, the optimized optical design, including configuration of LEDs and structure of optical system, was developed based on the optical simulations. Secondly, the thermal management of the module was conducted by using the fluid finite element simulation through considering both the natural and forced convections. The results show that: 1) a LED matrix with specially designed rectangle lens array that contains different size of lenses can produce the independent and nonoverlapping rectangular light spots as required; 2) the heatsink with optimal designed pin fins can provide more effective thermal dissipation in convection.

21. Improvement of soybean quality by ground source heat pump (GSHP) cooling system

Abstract

Post-harvest low-temperature management is essential to maintain the quality of raw soybeans. In this study, we applied a ground source heat pump (GSHP) cooling system to a large warehouse and compared the physiological and physical changes of soybeans stored in this warehouse with those stored in a traditional warehouse with mechanical ventilation (control warehouse). The temperature of the soybeans was measured once every three months. The results showed that the average temperature the soybeans in the GSHP warehouse and traditional warehouses was 13.9 and 18.7 °C, respectively. The temperatures in GSHP warehouse were 4.9–6.1 °C lower than that in the control warehouse for most of the summer period. Compared with the control warehouse, the soybeans stored in the GSHP warehouse for 12 months had a notably lower level of the free fatty acid content, microbial load and respiration rate, and a higher level of water solute protein content. Our study suggests that large warehouses using with the GSHP system is a promising approach to improve the quality of stored soybeans.

26. Mercury Removal and Ash Reduction from Coal by an Air Dense Medium Fluidized Bed.

Abstract

This study focused on the occurrence of mercury in coal and the effectiveness of mercury and ash removal by an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB). Results of the study revealed that there was a linear correlation between the mercury content, ash content and density of coal. This was attributed to the fact that mercury mainly exists in high density minerals containing elements with a certain affinity for mercury such as silicon, aluminum, iron, titanium, potassium, sodium, chloride, zinc, and magnesium. There is therefore a good correlation between the separation efficiency of ADMFB and the quality of the clean coal, as well as the overall removal of mercury. By optimizing the operating conditions based on the fitting models, clean coal with a mercury content of 0.0841 ppm and a separation efficiency exceeding 99.8% was obtained. The desirability of the separation effect optimized by fitting models was 0.999. Based on these results, it was concluded that ADMFB is an effective way to remove mercury from coal and reduce its ash content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Calcium fluoride (CaF 2 ) crystals were grown by gradient freeze technique (GF), and especially a novel shaped crystal growth method was presented to grow dome-shaped crystal. A calcium fluoride dome was successfully grown directly in the shaper we designed. The obtained CaF 2 block and dome demonstrate a high integrity and optical quality. The defects and crystallographic properties were characterized by chemical etching and the FWHM of the rocking curve respectively.
