Abstract

Pigeonpea is an important legume food crop grown primarily by smallholder farmers in many semi-arid tropical regions of the world. We used the Illumina next-generation sequencing platform to generate 237.2 Gb of sequence, which along with Sanger-based bacterial artificial chromosome end sequences and a genetic map, we assembled into scaffolds representing 72.7% (605.78 Mb) of the 833.07 Mb pigeonpea genome. Genome analysis predicted 48,680 genes for pigeonpea and also showed the potential role that certain gene families, for example, drought tolerance–related genes, have played throughout the domestication of pigeonpea and the evolution of its ancestors. Although we found a few segmental duplication events, we did not observe the recent genome-wide duplication events observed in soybean. This reference genome sequence will facilitate the identification of the genetic basis of agronomically important traits, and accelerate the development of improved pigeonpea varieties that could improve food security in many developing countries.

Abstract

A synchro-calculation Lanczos method is developed to calculate eigenpairs and their derivatives. In this method, the Lanczos vectors, tridiagonal matrix elements and their derivatives are simultaneously calculated. A cantilevered plane frame is used as a numerical example to illustrate the method's accuracy and efficiency over the traditional frequency-shift Lanczos method. However, an inverse relationship between the method's efficiency and the number of design variables involved may serve to inhibit its use in many applications.

Abstract

The human genome holds an extraordinary trove of information about human development, physiology, medicine and evolution. Here we report the results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome. We also present an initial analysis of the data, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.

29. Costello syndrome: Phenotype, natural history, differential diagnosis, and possible cause

Abstract

We describe 8 patients affected with Costello syndrome including an affected sib pair and review the literature on 29 previously reported cases. We emphasize an association with advanced parental age, which is consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance with germline mosaicism. The pathogenesis appears to involve metabolic dysfunction, with growth disturbance, storage disorder appearance, acanthosis nigricans, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and occasional abnormalities of glucose metabolism. Although the cause is currently unknown, Costello syndrome is interesting because of a potential genetic-metabolic etiology. (J Pediatr 1998;133:441-8)

The high and extremely variable bacterial populations reported warrant further study. Ranges of the other factors studied point both to the need for care in shopping by consumers and better information.

Abstract

The effect on nitrogen retention of varying the caloric intake when the diet provided quantities of lysine that equalled or exceeded minimum requirements was measured. Amino acids were present in purified form and as peptide-bound amino acids in cereals. Nitrogen balances of men and women were not altered by increasing the energy value of the diet above a critical level which differed for individuals. Abstract

The minimum quantities of lysine that maintained nitrogen equilibrium were estimated for 5 men and 5 women who consumed 9.0 gm of nitrogen principally as cereals, purified amino acids and diammonium citrate. Requirements of the men varied from 400 to 1200 mg, and of the women from 300 to 700 mg per day. The mean lysine requirement of 10 men was 750 mg and of 10 women 550 mg. These mean values are useful in estimating needs of population groups but not of individuals.

37. Utilization of a Delayed Lysine or Tryptophan Supplement for Protein Repletion of Rats1

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to compare the utilization of graded levels of lysine or tryptophan supplement mixed in a deficient diet for protein-repletion of rats with that of the comparable supplements given apart from the deficient diet. Results demonstrate that in partially protein-depleted rats tissue protein repletion is accomplished when rats are fed for 12 hours daily an otherwise adequate but lysine-free diet and then in the following 12 hours fed a protein-free diet supplemented with lysine. Delayed tryptophan supplement, however, was not effectively utilized for tissue repletion of rats. It is suggested that the effectiveness of the delayed lysine supplement may be related to the slow turnover rate of lysine in the body or the ability of the animals to re-use some of the lysine obtained from breakdown of tissue proteins for synthesis of new proteins or both. An amino acid toxicity occurred at the high level of tryptophan supplement (1.6% DL-tryptophan), either mixed in a deficient diet or given in a protein-free diet; this was not observed with the high level of lysine supplement (5% L-lysine-HCl).

43. Perforated Periaortic Valve Abscess Presents as Acute Pericarditis and Patient Died in Transesophageal Echocardiographic Study

Abstract

Rupture of infective endocarditis-associated perivalvular abscess of left ventricular outlet leading to death is a rare complication of transesophageal echocardiography. We report a case of impending rupture periaortic valve abscess of left ventricular outlet that was initially diagnosed as acute pericarditis at the emergency department in which the patient suddenly collapsed during the ongoing procedure of transesophageal echocardiography. Emergency surgical intervention was performed, but in vain. Destructive aortic valve and rupture of the periaortic valve abscess were found.
