The mean-field theory for disordered electron systems without interaction is widely and successfully used to describe equilibrium properties of materials over the whole range of disorder strengths. However, it fails to take into account the effects of quantum coherence and information of localization. Vertex corrections due to multiple back-scatterings may drive the electrical conductivity to zero and make expansions around the mean field in strong disorder problematic. Here, we present a method for the calculation of two-particle quantities which enable us to characterize the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in disordered electron systems by using the Typical Medium Dynamical Cluster Approximation (TMDCA). We show how to include vertex corrections and the information about the mobility edge to the typical mean-field theory. We successfully demonstrate the application of the developed method by showing that the conductivity formulated in this way properly characterizes the MIT in disordered systems., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We apply the recently developed dual fermion algorithm for disordered interacting systems to the Anderson-Hubbard model. This algorithm is compared with dynamical cluster approximation calculations for a one-dimensional system to establish the quality of the approximation in comparison with an established cluster method. We continue with a three-dimensional (3d) system and look at the antiferromagnetic, Mott and Anderson localization transitions. The dual fermion approach leads to quantitative as well as qualitative improvement of the dynamical mean-field results and it allows one to calculate the hysteresis in the double occupancy in 3d taking into account nonlocal correlations.

The interplay of interactions and disorder is studied using the Anderson-Hubbard model within the typical medium dynamical cluster approximation. Treating the interacting, non-local cluster self-energy ($\Sigma_c[{\cal \tilde{G}}](i,j\neq i)$) up to second order in the perturbation expansion of interactions, $U^2$, with a systematic incorporation of non-local spatial correlations and diagonal disorder, we explore the initial effects of electron interactions ($U$) in three dimensions. We find that the critical disorder strength ($W_c^U$), required to localize all states, increases with increasing $U$; implying that the metallic phase is stabilized by interactions. Using our results, we predict a soft pseudogap at the intermediate $W$ close to $W_c^U$ and demonstrate that the mobility edge ($\omega_\epsilon$) is preserved as long as the chemical potential, $\mu$, is at or beyond the mobility edge energy., Comment: 10 Pages, 8 Figures with Supplementary materials included

We generalize the recently introduced dual fermion (DF) formalism for disordered fermion systems by including the effect of interactions. For an interacting disordered system the contributions to the full vertex function have to be separated into elastic and inelastic scattering processes, and addressed differently when constructing the DF diagrams. By applying our approach to the Anderson-Falicov-Kimball model and systematically restoring the nonlocal correlations in the DF lattice calculation, we show a significant improvement over the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory and the Coherent Potential Approximation for both one-particle and two-particle quantities., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

To reduce the rapidly growing computational cost of the dual fermion lattice calculation with increasing system size, we introduce two embedding schemes. One is the real fermion embedding, and the other is the dual fermion embedding. Our numerical tests show that the real fermion and dual fermion embedding approaches converge to essentially the same result. The application on the Anderson disorder and Hubbard models shows that these embedding algorithms converge more quickly with system size as compared to the conventional dual fermion method, for the calculation of both single-particle and two-particle quantities., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

While the coherent potential approximation (CPA) is the prevalent method for the study of disordered electronic systems, it fails to capture non-local correlations and Anderson localization. To incorporate such effects, we extend the dual fermion approach to disordered non-interacting systems using the replica method. Results for single- and two- particle quantities show good agreement with cluster extensions of the CPA; moreover, weak localization is captured. As a natural extension of the CPA, our method presents an alternative to the existing cluster theories. It can be used in various applications, including the study of disordered interacting systems, or for the description of non-local effects in electronic structure calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We find that imposing the crossing symmetry in the iteration process considerably extends the range of convergence for solutions of the parquet equations for the Hubbard model. When the crossing symmetry is not imposed, the convergence of both simple iteration and more complicated continuous loading (homotopy) methods are limited to high temperatures and weak interactions. We modify the algorithm to impose the crossing symmetry without increasing the computational complexity. We also imposed time reversal and a subset of the point group symmetries, but they did not further improve the convergence. We elaborate the details of the latency hiding scheme which can significantly improve the performance in the computational implementation. With these modifications, stable solutions for the parquet equations can be obtained by iteration more quickly even for values of the interaction that are a significant fraction of the bandwidth and for temperatures that are much smaller than the bandwidth. This may represent a crucial step towards the solution of two-particle field theories for correlated electron models., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We have designed a new multi-scale approach for Strongly Correlated Systems by combining the Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) and the recently introduced dual-fermion formalism. This approach employs an exact mapping from a real lattice to a DCA cluster of linear size Lc embedded in a dual fermion lattice. Short-length-scale physics is addressed by the DCA cluster calculation, while longer-length-scale physics is addressed diagrammatically using dual fermions. The bare and dressed dual Fermionic Green functions scale as O(1/Lc) so perturbation theory on the dual lattice converges very quickly. E.g., the dual Fermion self-energy calculated with simple second order perturbation theory is of order O(1/Lc^3), with third order and three body corrections down by an additional factor of O(1/Lc^2).

A quantum critical point (QCP), separating the non-Fermi liquid region from the Fermi liquid, exists in the phase diagram of the 2D Hubbard model [Vidhyadhiraja et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 206407 (2009)]. Due to the vanishing of the critical temperature associated with a phase separation transition, the QCP is characterized by a vanishing quasiparticle weight. Near the QCP, the pairing is enhanced since the real part of the bare d-wave p-p susceptibility exhibits algebraic divergence with decreasing temperature, replacing the logarithmic divergence found in a Fermi liquid [Yang et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 047004 (2011)]. In this paper we explore the single-particle and transport properties near the QCP. We focus mainly on a van Hove singularity (vHS) coming from the relatively flat dispersion that crosses the Fermi level near the quantum critical filling. The flat part of the dispersion orthogonal to the antinodal direction remains pinned near the Fermi level for a range of doping that increases when we include a negative next-near-neighbor hopping t' in the model. For comparison, we calculate the bare d-wave pairing susceptibility for non-interacting models with the usual two-dimensional tight binding dispersion and a hypothetical quartic dispersion. We find that neither model yields a vHS that completely describes the critical algebraic behavior of the bare d-wave pairing susceptibility. The resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermopower, and the Wiedemann-Franz Law are examined in the Fermi liquid, marginal Fermi liquid, and pseudo-gap doping regions. A negative next-near-neighbor hopping t' increases the doping region with marginal Fermi liquid character. Both T and negative t' are relevant variables for the QCP, and both the transport and the motion of the vHS with filling suggest that they are qualitatively similar in their effect., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

We present a numerical solution of the parquet approximation (PA), a conserving diagrammatic approach which is self-consistent at both the single-particle and the two-particle levels. The fully irreducible vertex is approximated by the bare interaction thus producing the simplest approximation that one can perform with the set of equations involved in the formalism. The method is applied to the Hubbard model on a half-filled 4x4 cluster. Results are compared to those obtained from Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), FLuctuation EXchange (FLEX), and self-consistent second-order approximation methods. This comparison shows a satisfactory agreement with DQMC and a significant improvement over the FLEX or the self-consistent second-order approximation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures
