19. Tensile stress development and critical behavior of a flexible barrier

Abstract

A DEM numerical approach is employed to illustrate the critical stress development of a three-supporting cable flexible barrier under a large scale stony debris movement impact. A proper linear parallel bond is applied to build the flexible barrier model. Critical state is presented by lowering the tensile resistance of the flexible barrier and steepening the channel slope. The tensile stress of the supporting cables is primarily studied. Results mainly indicate that the particle-structure contact is essential to the stress development. The bottom cable always exhibits larger tensile stress due to the massive collision and compressive force of particles and the tensile force exerted by the vertical cable-net joint system. On the other hand, the intermediate cable receives lower collision and compressive force, resulting in smaller tensile stress. The bottom cable indicating numerous direct particle-structure contact part performs brittle failure, which is analogous to the concentrated load feedbacks. The loading of the intermediate one reaches ductile failure, reflecting the desirable effect of dispersing loads. This study suggests that practical engineering should try to avoid massive boulder impact or reinforce the bottom cable in order to improve the hazard prevention design.

Abstract

Artificially tilted multilayer thermoelectric devices (ATMTDs) have attracted widespread attention due to their advantages of simple and stable structure. In this study, n-type Ag2Te and p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BiSbTe), as two typically excellent room-temperature thermoelectric materials, were used to assemble ATMTDs. The interface structure and chemical composition of Ag2Te/BiSbTe ATMTDs were characterized and their transverse thermoelectric performance was evaluated. The results indicated that the interfacial diffusion and reaction at Ag2Te/BiSbTe interface leads to the formation of AgSbTe2 phase with thickness approximately 22 μm and the interface established an ohmic-type electrical contact with a small contact resistance. After structural optimization, the Ag2Te/BiSbTe ATMTD with titled angle 45° and aspect ratio 3 exhibited a large transverse voltage of reaches 6.78 mV at a temperature difference of 80 K, reaching 91.1% of the theoretical value. This work demonstrates that Ag2Te/BiSbTe ATMTDs possess a good interfacial contact and transverse thermoelectric performance without significant power loss, maintaining excellent power generation and thermal response properties. Abstract

ClC-6 is a late endosomal voltage-gated chloride-proton exchanger that is predominantly expressed in the nervous system. Mutated forms of ClC-6 are associated with severe neurological disease. However, the mechanistic role of ClC-6 in normal and pathological states remains largely unknown. Here, we present cryo-EM structures of ClC-6 that guided subsequent functional studies. Previously unrecognized ATP binding to cytosolic ClC-6 domains enhanced ion transport activity. Guided by a disease-causing mutation (p.Y553C), we identified an interaction network formed by Y553/F317/T520 as potential hotspot for disease-causing mutations. This was validated by the identification of a patient with a de novo pathogenic variant p.T520A. Extending these findings, we found contacts between intramembrane helices and connecting loops that modulate the voltage dependence of ClC-6 gating and constitute additional candidate regions for disease-associated gain-of-function mutations. Abstract

In-plane stability calculation model of mast was set up firstly based on the thin-walled components flexuraltorsional theory. Theoretical arithmetic,according to the energy method and principle of stationary potential energy,and numerical simulation and verification of the derrick’s in-plane stability were conducted,and the results of theoretical calculation and numerical simulation basically tallied. Then,material nonlinear analysis was conducted on 5 kinds of structural steel masts.Results show that: maximum stress of the thin-walled derrick exceeds the yield strength of the material when linear buckling occurs in the lifting drilling process for the 5 kinds of structural steel masts and the type of instability is elastic-plastic buckling;The elastic-plastic buckling safety factor y becomes larger with the increasing of yield strength of materials,and the linear fitting function is y = 0. 00707x- 0. 01651; The steel materials that whose yield strength is greater than 313. 5 MPa meet the requirements of derrick’s in-plane elastic-plastic stability.

Abstract

The respiratory chain complexes I, III and IV (CI, CIII and CIV) are present in the bacterial membrane or the inner mitochondrial membrane and have a role of transferring electrons and establishing the proton gradient for ATP synthesis by complex V. The respiratory chain complexes can assemble into supercomplexes (SCs), but their precise arrangement is unknown. Here we report a 5.4 cryo-electron microscopy structure of the major 1.7 megadalton SCI[sub.1]III[sub.2]IV[sub.1] respirasome purified from porcine heart. The CIII dimer and CIV bind at the same side of the L-shaped CI, with their transmembrane domains essentially aligned to form a transmembrane disk. Compared to free CI, the CI in the respirasome is more compact because of interactions with CIII and CIV. The NDUFA11 and NDUFB9 supernumerary subunits of CI contribute to the oligomerization of CI and CIII.
